Daniel Henney up for Goodbye Mr. Black

Well it’s good to know that the new revenge drama Goodbye Mr. Black has found itself a new home at MBC and has withstood rounds of rumors that it would never make it on the air. It’s now being planned for a March broadcast, and has begun casting again for supporting characters. An offer is currently out to Daniel Henney (Runaway: Plan B) to join the cast, which I could honestly take or leave — he’s very pretty, but I find him so uninteresting as an actor. He does fit an obvious type though — worldly, handsome, successful — and casting him is pretty much a shorthand for that character type now.

Goodbye Mr. Black is the manhwa adaptation that’s loosely based on The Count of Monte Cristo, about the revenge of a man betrayed by his best friend and lover. Thankfully, the production didn’t lose any of its main actors during all of the broadcast scheduling hullabaloo. Lee Jin-wook (The Time I’ve Loved You) stars as the hero, a former naval officer who sets his sights on revenge when he’s framed for a crime and stabbed in the back by those closest to him.

Moon Chae-won (Good Doctor) is the cheerful young woman the hero fake-marries as part of his new cover identity, and she begins to change him and rebuild his faith in humanity. Kim Kang-woo (Missing Noir M) plays a chaebol who made his fortune in petroleum, and is now the CEO of a resort. And Song Jae-rim (Unkind Women) is a publisher and news editor who believes that the media has more power than the law.

Daniel Henney is being courted for the role of a financial adviser for an investment trust company, who also serves as the president of a non-government organization. He’s got good sense, he’s quick on the uptake, and he has a bright personality too. He’s always surrounded by women and knows just about every eligible bachelorette worth knowing, but remains single. He’ll be a benefactor to Moon Chae-won’s character, and he’s described as a dependable Daddy Long Legs type. Daddy Long Legs pretty much spells romantic doom in dramaland, but come on, were we really expecting anyone else to have a shot when she’s contract-marrying Lee Jin-wook?

Goodbye Mr. Black will air on Wednesdays and Thursdays in March on MBC.

Sounds a bit promising, I'll give it a dry but if the first 3 episodes don't match my taste I'll have to back out. I've to agree with you there gf, he's cute but I'm not just wrapped under his charms. Who knows, maybe this drama will change my view of Daniel Henney as an actor

I really like Daniel Henney! Obvious reasons are he's incredibly hot but more than that, I do enjoy his screen presence. I don't think he's as terrible as some think, I think he's someone who hasn't had a chance to really shine in a good role. I just hope his Korean has improved loads since MNIKSS!

I agree...I would rather end up with him than the other guy...LJW doesn't do anything for me at all...I've seen him in a few but only because someone I like was in the drama.

I like Daniel Henny...he exudes a 'nice guy' aura and is very likable. I think his acting is fine from what I saw in Kim Sam Soon. He does play english speaking in roles in korean dramas, so one would expect a different flow - but I think the acting was good.

I don't think he'll mess this one up too much, if Song Jae-rim's the actual second lead then he'll pretty much just be in the background.

I do hope the drama is decent.

I love love love MCW so much but I still can't get myself to watch this because of Lee Jin Wook!! He is so uninteresting and boring. If Daniel is uninteresting then LJW for me is 10x more!! He just do not have the added Xfactor or charisma that theother top actors such a SJS, Won Bin, KDW, KNG, etc. have or for young actors KSH, KWB, LMH etc. that even if they aren't the best actors out there they still have this charm or special something that made fans like them. The main reason their top stars now. But with LJW, I look at him and there is nothing. He looks dry. Even if he can act a special magical something is still needed to be a top star or an Alist atleast. Or to have a hit drama.

I have seen him in a couple of dramas and yes he can act well but there rally is no special something about hi. That make his shine on TV while watching. He is male lead in Nine and TTILY and I see nothing interesting about him at all.

I just hope this do not flop big time for MCW's sake. So good luck still I guess!!

@Krys11 and to other doubting "fans"

It's understandable that some would doubt LJW's talent & charm given some of his recent work. However, if you are truly MCW's fan, you would have some faith in her capabilities as a studious and serious actress.

MCW never goes into her projects without thought and study, which is why she has such a limited amount of projects per year. She has also proven her fantastic chemistry with every co-star so far, even when her love interest is a female (case in point, Painter of the Wind). So, before this drama comes out, it's really too early to "skip" this drama.

In addition, being quite a "snob" when it comes to dramas & acting charisma/talent, I think LJW can be a captivating lead. He just needs the right co-star & character. LJW has KKW, who is a fantastic actor, and MCW. If "fans" really doubt LJW's ability, at least have a bit of confidence in KKW and MCW to bring some "magical mojo" to this cast.

Don't forget, this cast was rejected by SBS. That kind of dismissal does something to bond a cast and writer together. Many MCW fans have a lot of hope and anticipation for this drama comeback. As MCW "fans," let's all be a bit more positive about this comeback.

I completely agree with you! I am a major fan of Moon Chae Won but can't bring myself to be even slightly interested in this drama because of my disinterest in Lee Jing Wook. With him, I feel zero appeal. I think your term 'He looks dry' is perfect to describe how I feel about him.

It's a real shame because I also like Song Jae Rim.

Are you really her fan? If you are really her fan, I don't think you'll say things like this, because it won't do any good thing for her drama. It'll just make it harder to watch and support the drama together for MCW and LJW fans.

You can say whatever you want as your personal opinion, no need to make it as the opinion of MCW fan.
I'm MCW fan and her fans whom I knew didn't say anything like this until now, and I'm sure they'll watch and support her drama no matter what, since we've been waiting for her CB since 2013.

This is a very weird and slightly creepy definition of "being a fan". I do not understand this "fans should be blind devotees of everything their idol is remotely associated with" mentality. (Although I realize it's become pretty common.) It's fandom, not a cult. We can love people as fans and still be critical consumers of entertainment.

If you want to say something regarding another actor, you don't need to mention it as an opinion of MCW fan, it's your personal opinion. That's all.
And I didn't said that fans need to "blind devotees of everything their idol is remotely associated with", They only have to avoid creating unnecessary hate. the drama didn't even air, it's too early to judge anyone, LJW have the chance to improve, and I hope MCW will improve too, because honestly the last project I liked her in was IM, I wasn't really fond of good doctor or love forecast.

I am a huge fan of hers, too, but the fact Lee Jin Wook is the leading actors....well unfortunately to say, I've lost such great anticipation for the drama.

The fact that he's a leading actor and to me, I don't believe he is leading actor material. Yes, to each their own. I wouldn't have mind it so much if he was second lead. I can't even bring myself to watch "The Time We Were In Love" even though I consider myself a Ha Ji Won fan because I found out Lee Jin Wook was the lead. Seems like I didn't miss much based on plenty of reviews from numerous people.

(sigh) I'm so frustrated with this disappointment. I was so excited with anticipation until Lee Jin Wook happened. WHYYYYY?! But it's just a drama... just a drama (so I remind myself).

I watched “The Time We Were In Love” and actually Lee Jin Wook was the best part in it. I think the problem with that drama was the plot. There were numerous changes of the script writers, it's no wonder that it got messed up, but that's hardly to blame on the actors. Besides I must say that though I really really like Ha Ji Won and adore her in past dramas (especially Empress Ki), her performance in there was the weakest up to date. Her acting was very stiff and she looked really uncomfortable in the romance scenes, that's why the chemistry between the lead couple was like zero. It's really a shame since I like both of them. Nevertheless I'm looking forward to this one!!

But she IS a MCW fan and she can express her opinion. How can you ask her to separate the two? That's like asking/telling her to cut herself in half. Hopefully we are all grown-ups here, and as such nothing anyone says will stop us from supporting whomever and whatever we like. I'm a fan of SJR and have seen a number of comments disparaging him but they do absolutely nothing to corrode my appreciation for him.

She didn't support MCW by her -ve comments, she only give people bad impression about MCW fans. You can see in the comments here, some people did really take this as MCW fans opinion. If she think it's too necessary to write such comment, at least she should avoid linking it to MCW fans. I don't want to see MCW and LJW fans fighting each other before the drama even start, it's not wise at all.

0

Donuts is not here in this particular space and time to "support" MCW but rather to opine that she doesn't care for the casting of LJW ...period. It's perfectly OK to express herself as a "major fan of MCW" because that is what she is...period. There is nothing, nothing at all, in her comment that in any way damages MCW or MCW fandom...period. She is NOT the one giving anybody a bad impression of MCW fans. And no one is "fighting" especially Donuts cuz she has even responded. This is a lively discussion, not a fight. ?

the first reply was to Donuts but after that I was taking in general about her and the other "fans", You don't even need to look for the reaction in other sites, you can see here some people are saying we're scary and annoying, why do you think they said that? and if it was lively discussion for you, for LJW fans it wasn't like that at all. and I can't blame them. in every article about this drama they start blaming LJW because he doesn't have much appeal and they can't give the drama any chance because of LJW, when we didn't see anything from him as black until now.

For example, when I say I am a fan of Moon Chae Won or anyone else, I don't expect to speak on behalf of her opinion. lol It is the person who thinks otherwise who should rethink things through when reading others opinion.

I, too, am a huge fan of hers but I don't have to like who she pairs up with either. ;)

Let me rephrase.

Just because I can say I am huge Moon Chae Won fan does not mean I am speaking on behalf of her fandom.***

anyway, i haven't seen any of LJW's works. i think he's super good looking but i've never wanted to watch anything he's in since i've never been interested in him or his female leads, UNTIL NOW.

so yeah, i get where you're coming from with the whole "no charisma" thing. i've watched some LJW clips and never felt anything for him but then again, maybe that's just cuz i've never liked anything he's done? whatevs, i'm willing to give this a shot for MCW and the reeeeeaaally good cast (i really like KKW btw!)

Moon Chae Won, I completely agree. I'm still debating on this because I am almost completely against her pairing just because not only was I excited that she signed on but I also loved the premises of the story.

I still MUCH MUCH prefer Kim Kang Woo to play Mr. Black or even better yet, my wishful thinking was Gong Yoo. Can you imagine?!

GOODBYE MR. BLACK
Starring Moon Chae Won, Gong Yoo, Kim Kang Woo, Song Jae Rim, and Daniel Henney.

But with Lee Jin Wook as the lead, you can just feel the intensity shift and unfortunately to say, it's not a good one. If you can imagine a balloon full of air but when you let go, it just flies through the air making fart noises. Too harsh? lol

I have confidence that the drama will still do well thanks to Moon Chae Won despite of my disappointment in the leading actor choice. There's really nothing I can do but suck it up or just wait until the drama is over and watch it then. I rarely stream dramas which a very few exceptions (including SIX FLYING DRAGONS and loving it). This WAS going to be one of those rarity times but I don't think I can do it.

Lee Jin Wook, yes, he just lacks onscreen presence. It doesn't matter how much screen time you give him, he just never really done much for me and I've given him plenty of chances. Oh well. Still wish him all the best.

As for Lee Min Ho, I still can't think of BOF without euuuuugh! But forget his dramas, have you seen Gangnam Blues?

0

Oh come on guys, if LJW isn't charismatic, who else is then? And just judging him by watching some clips is really too much. What I agree though is that I didn't watch some of his dramas because of the storyline or the female leads.

0

You took the word out of my mouth! All of my close friends really like/love LMH, and they don't get it when I said that I don't really feel anything with his acting.

Sounds like Moon Chae Won has a harem. But, it'd be cool if Daniel's character was a friend-type Daddy Long Legs. Like Yoo Ji Tae's character was to PMY's in Healer. That's all I keep thinking of, but it'd probably be romantic.

Nope. They can't. ? (To be honest, I know they could if they want to but it doesn't look like they want to.) Perhaps his chemistry was off with his UW character's romantic interest, but I found it spot on with his brother and evil witch of a mother. I've seen him in a number of things and I don't see a repetitive pattern in his characters. I'm having a hard time getting through 2 Weeks cuz I'm watching it mainly for him and his character is such a heartless prick. That's how I base whether some one can act or not -- if I come away not recognizing other portrayed characters from other work then they have some skills. But skills are like knives, they need to be sharpened. Even supposedly great actors can fall flat like Brad Pitt's portrayal of Achilles in "Troy."
