Sung Joon considers JTBC’s Madam Antoine

So Sung Joon (High Society) is up to join Han Ye-seul (Birth of a Beauty) in the upcoming JTBC drama Madam Antoine, which strikes me as… an interesting pairing. Maybe I mean odd. Maybe even a little mismatched?

The drama is the medical-rom-com series about clinical psychologists that comes from the PD of My Name Is Kim Sam-soon and Que Sera Sera and the writer of Mi-rae’s Choice and The King 2 Hearts. I see why the casting went for Sung Joon in that he has a connection to PD Kim Yoon-chul, who directed him in JTBC’s well-received Can We Marry, though I’m still trying to figure out how the pairing would work.

I do like both actors separately, but they each have such different styles. Han Ye-seul’s best in those over-the-top bold characters who maybe don’t exist in reality, like a heroine out of an old-school screwball comedy. I really enjoyed her in Birth of a Beauty, even when the drama started to tank; she and Joo Sang-wook suited each other well in the farcical madcap scenes, and I was sad when that tone faded into angst.

Sung Joon, on the other hand, does well playing the straight man, less broad and more realistic; he’s played a lot of sweet boyfriends (Discovery of Romance, I Need Romance 3), though he’ll forever have my heart as the broody rocker simmering with teenage rage in Shut Up: Flower Boy Band. I’m really curious to see how they’d suit, IF they’d suit. On the upside, if he’s playing a shrink in this drama, he has experience in that role. On the downside, maybe we don’t want his shrink to be a psycho this time?

For now, we have no word on their characters or the plot, other than that it’s a romantic comedy about psychologists and healing pain. Madam Antoine is set to follow D-Day on weekends in November.

Sung Joon couldn't move his facial muscles properly for God's sake in High Society and got his limelight stolen by Park Hyung Sik and Lim Ji Yeon and their combined chemistry. I do hope this turns out better if he is cast. He really need to step up his game, HS was a complete miss for him.

I watch him on High Society and honestly I am even more impress with Hyungshik acting, who is an idol, than him. And that is saying something when an idol outact an actor. He is so stiff. I don't know if maybe he just don't suit the character so his acting turn out so stiff and don't felt natural at all or his just not that good in acting. I don't wanna judge him yet because I haven't really watch any of his other dramas to say that he really is bad at acting but if it's just the character then maybe next time he should pick a character that actually matches him or a character he knows he can act well because I swear I dislike him on High Society. I only watch that drama for Hyungshik's character and to make sure he have a happy ending. I actually don't like Sungjoon and UEE there.

Anyway since I am not a fan of both I probably will not watch this unless it has good reviews later on and people actually testified that both SJ & HYS acting improved and are atleast good now. I still wish them both luck though.

When you stick the two side-by-side like that, they look alike, haha. Anyway, I'd be interested in seeing this pairing if it all goes through. I feel like Han Ye Seul's real-life bubbly personality will rub off well on Sung Joon (who is pretty serious irl, haha). Maybe it could lead to something interesting on screen.

But who knows. I certainly always like giving odd pairings a shot.

Hmmm...she's good at screwball comedy, he was a psychiatrist and hypnosis expert...maybe we'll get a K-version of the Astaire and Rogers movie Carefree? Then everything would make sense.

I am not sure why javabeans call the two actors a mismatched? I understand there is an age difference but Sung Joon has been paired with older women before.

As for Sung Joon's cool aloofness in High Society, well that role is not meant to be over emotive anyway.

I like this pairing, will certainly take a peek if it is confirmed.

I've managed to watch A LOT of Sung Joon's previous work, most of them purely on accident. The shows interested me and he just happened to be in them, but I agree his acting seems to be getting worse not better. I thought he was great in Shut Up Flower Boy Band, Can We Get Married, and Discovery of Romance. But his acting was laughably bad in HJM and was subpar in High Society. But that whole drama's storyline kind of tanked near the end anyway. I used to think he was a good actor, but now I'm not so sure. Here's to hoping he picks better projects, but based on this drama's presence not so sure this is going to be a good one.
