She Was Pretty: Episode 9

Hye-jin’s makeover heralds a shift in her attitude, and while the changes mostly meet with approval from her peers, that doesn’t mean there aren’t people who miss the old version, too. Meanwhile Sung-joon’s perfect facade begins to crack, and he needs his old friend more than ever — will they find each other in time?

EPISODE 9 RECAP

Hye-jin visits a professional stylist to do something about her “vicious curls,” and though the cost makes her gasp, she goes for it. Next she goes shopping for new clothes, and gets a professional makeover. When she strides into her building full of confidence and looking like a million bucks, the management department employees don’t even recognize her.

The Most staff are so shocked at her new polished appearance that they can’t do a single thing but gape at her. She announces that she’s back, and how much do I love the pounce-hug that Joon-woo gives her? Hee, Shin-hyuk tries to object, and Seul actually pulls Joon-woo off her jealously.

Sung-joon just smiles at Hye-jin from his office, which she acknowledges with a small bow.

Poor Shin-hyuk looks like he wants to cry when he sees the changes in Hye-jin, calling her freckles “Jackson’s best feature.” He whines that the old Jackson was much prettier, which just makes me love him even more.

Seul even makes a point to tell Hye-jin how nice she looks, calling her “unni” for the first time. She seems to regret that her actions (sending Hye-jin to move her car) nearly got her fired.

Hye-jin notices that Onion Head has been growing while she was gone, and figures someone must have been watering him. She notices the sad face that Sung-joon drew on the back side, and bows to him again in thanks for taking care of her little friend. Sung-joon smiles at her again, and she tentatively smiles back. This doesn’t go unnoticed by Shin-hyuk.

Chief Editor Kim doesn’t even recognize Hye-jin, but when she introduces herself, Chief Editor Kim finally tells her she looks “very Most-like.” Success!

Shin-hyuk hustles Hye-jin out for coffee, where he learns that Sung-joon personally asked her to come back to Most. She tells Shin-hyuk that she has a goal — to replace her father’s printing machine. He offers to help her, and stay right by her side.

Sung-joon calls Ha-ri, who’s been avoiding his calls, to ask her to make some time for him today. He offers to come to the hotel, but Ha-ri forbids him from coming there, ever. She offers to meet him after work, but when she hangs up, she clutches at her stomach again in pain.

The Most team have a meeting to plan the twentieth edition anniversary event. They’re expecting people from other Most publications, as well as famous models, designers, and artists, so they want to make it large and luxurious.

Reporter Cha notices that both Sung-joon and Hye-jin seem preoccupied, and Hye-jin admits that she thinks that having an extravagant celebration is too cliché. It doesn’t go with her concept of highlighting secondary characters from famous stories.

Sung-joon agrees — the concept is about looking at the world from a different point of view, so he thinks they should do something different. Hye-jin suggests doing something the opposite of brilliance, and Sung-joon says they should focus on the people behind the scenes. Reporter Cha points out that that’s everyone in this room — they are the people behind the glamorous magazine.

For the first time, the entire Most team is energized and inspired, and they bounce ideas off each other excitedly. Shin-hyuk makes a point to let everyone know the idea was Hye-jin’s, and the team applauds her while Sung-joon smiles softly.

Later in his office, Sung-joon returns Hye-jin’s idea sketchbook and admits that he read every page. He even added some ideas, and he compliments her on her “cozy” way of seeing things. He’s not finished, and presents her with a gift of her employee ID, now in a lovely leather holder. He grins at her not to lose it again., calling it his “welcome” gift. He stops her one more time, saying that he forgot the most important thing: It’s great that she’s back. Awww.

That night Ha-ri watches Sung-joon as he waits for her in a coffee shop, too nervous to go in. She claims that something came up when he calls her, and that she has to go out of the country. He’s disappointed, and just asks her to call him when she comes back.

Ha-ri ends up collapsing in a convenience store, in too much pain to even walk, and thank goodness Shin-hyuk is there eating and takes her to the hospital. It turns out that Ha-ri is making herself sick from stress — she clearly hasn’t eaten or slept in days.

Shin-hyuk stays until Ha-ri wakes, knowing this is all because she can’t bring herself to tell Sung-joon the truth. He reminds her that she knows Sung-joon and Hye-jin are each other’s first love, but Ha-ri cries that Sung-joon is her first love, too.

Late that night, Ha-ri finds Hye-jin cooking for her, and asks if she’s stressed — she knows Ha-ri gets stomachaches when she’s stressed. It’s been happening since she was young, and her stepmother would only throw money at her to buy medicine. It was Hye-jin who would bring her porridge and take care of her. Ha-ri had tearfully promised to live with Hye-jin forever, and always treat her well.

Now Ha-ri watches while Hye-jin fusses over stew and offers to sleep with her tonight to make sure she’s okay. She gives Hye-jin a grateful backhug, saying that she’s the real medicine. Hye-jin is alarmed at her tears, but Ha-ri just hugs her again and says that she’s fine.

Hye-jin looks nice at work the next morning as well, and her coworkers ask why she didn’t do this sooner, if she knew how. She claims she was paying off student loans.

There’s another meeting to plan the twentieth anniversary celebration, but when Ah-reum comes in late because of car trouble, Sung-joon berates her in front of everyone. Guess he hasn’t changed that much after all.

Shin-hyuk notices Hye-jin’s new ID case and complains even more about how much she’s changed. He laughs when Hye-jin says it’s a gift from Sung-joon and that she hopes they can be true colleagues now, spitting A ‘welcome’ present, HA, how absurd, HA!!. He’s so cute when he’s jealous.

Shin-hyuk even follows Hye-jin’s bus that night, hollering, “Jackson! ‘Welcome,’ HA!” He’s certifiably nuts, this guy. She jumps off the bus and he presents her with a gorgeous new bag, as his welcome gift. He even makes a fuss over how much bigger it is than Sung-joon’s welcome present, hee.

Hye-jin tries to refuse, but when Shin-hyuk threatens to give it to a passing dog, she can’t let such a pretty bag go that way. She does manage to ward off his adorable aegyo as he begs her to take him to eat, though I don’t know how she does it.

The Most team get ready for their anniversary celebration, and Sung-joon practices the speech he wrote in English to welcome their overseas guests. We get a whole lineup of famous guests, including UEE, Seo In-gook, Park Hyung-shik, and even Lee Jun-ki. (Footage was taken from the recent Seoul Drama Awards.)

But Sung-joon isn’t there yet, and the Most team start to get worried. When the MC arrives (another cameo by KIM JE-DONG) he mentions that he was running late because of rain and traffic, and Hye-jin’s worry for Sung-joon intensifies.

Reporter Cha decides to delay the start of the event to wait for Sung-joon, but Kim Je-dong can’t quite hear the instructions through his headset and he misinterprets that they want him to give a speech. He starts the event early, and the Most team start to panic.

Knowing that Sung-joon has trouble riding in cars when it’s raining ever since his mother died, Hye-jin watches nervously for him at the front door. Meanwhile a video plays for the guests, of all the Most employees hard at work (or not, ha), and it’s a big hit. But after the video it’s time for Sung-joon’s speech, and he’s still not there.

Luckily, Reporter Cha remembers that Shin-hyuk also speaks English, and tells him to go make the opening speech. Shin-yuk balks but eventually starts to head onstage, then stops to see that Chief Editor Kim, dressed more outrageously than ever before, has beaten him to it.

She proceeds to tell the entire audience that, while they were probably expecting an extravagant event, what they have instead is a disaster. It’s ugly, not beautiful, and absolutely un-Most-like. She actually calls the event shit, and her team crazy.

Sung-joon is currently pulled over on the side of the road, sobbing in his car, frozen in fear. Hye-jin is beside herself, but she gets a text from Reporter Cha to get herself to the event hall, just as Chief Editor Kim is now calling the entire editing team shit, and saying that they looked like human zombies during the planning of this event. ~cringe~

But she changes her tone and says that to her, they’re all beautiful. They are the darkness that allows the stars to shine, and they do this every month as publication deadline approaches. The Most team start to tear up as Chief Editor Kim wraps up with a simple, “I love you.”

Sung-joon finally shows up just as she’s wrapping up her speech, pale but okay. He sees that the event is underway and leaves the event hall, looking deeply disappointed in himself when Chief Editor Kim finds him. She asks him what happened, but he can only repeat, “I’m sorry. I’m sorry.”

Hye-jin finds him still there later, and sits near him without a word. He doesn’t acknowledge her presence, but he doesn’t send her away, either.

Back at work, Ah-reum snarks about Sung-joon being late to the anniversary event when he gave her such a hard time about being late to one meeting. They all make fun of him, until finally Hye-jin speaks up. She says they’re being too harsh when they don’t even know him, which makes them all wonder what she knows.

Before she can do more than deny it, Sung-joon calls her aside to ask why she spoke up for him. She says they made her angry and gets all worked up again, and Sung-joon just stares at her for a long moment, then chuckles. He says that even though she’s overreacting, it’s nice to have someone on his side.

He admits that they’re right to criticize him, because he did make a mistake. Regardless of personal issues, he created a problem and it’s his responsibility. But he thanks her anyway, and remarks that giving her that gift was worth it. Awww.

Later, Reporter Cha asks Hye-jin if she would be interested in writing an article. Since the storybook concept is hers, they want her to write an article on fairy tales. She tells Hye-jin to give it a shot — if it’s not good, they won’t print it, so there’s no harm in trying.

Hye-jin still declines, though both Shin-hyuk and Sung-joon overhear the conversation and make mental note. Shin-hyuk urges her to at least try, then calls out to Reporter Cha that she’ll do it. HA.

That night Shin-hyuk runs into Ha-ri again, and she asks him for a favor — a ride on his motorcycle. She urges him to put on some speed, and they ride through the streets whooping and hollering.

At her bus stop Hye-jin sees a poster with “Dance in the Country” featured, and smiles at it. Sung-joon stops to look as well, neither of them noticing the other right away. Sung-joon asks if Hye-jin likes Renoir, and she admits that she doesn’t know much about him, but looking at this painting makes her feel good.

Sung-joon suddenly morphs into his younger self in Hye-jin’s eyes, and tells her that Renoir only drew happy moments, because he wanted to treasure those moments through his art. That’s why you feel happy when you look at his paintings. Hye-jin giggles at chubby little Sung-joon in his turtleneck and holding his coffee… so cute.

Sung-joon leaves, then bounces right back to sit with Hye-jin until her bus comes. Just because the weather is nice, you know. He’s so transparent. Out of nowhere he asks if she’s heard of the god of opportunity and shows her another painting of a naked man from his phone, and the first thing Hye-jin notices is his “pepper” (Korean slang for a man’s… manhood). HAHA, Sung-joon hides it with his thumb and tells her to look at his face.

He explains why the man only has hair at the front of his head — when opportunity comes close, it’s easy to grab it. But once it passes, it can’t be caught again. Sung-joon says it just popped into his head, and Hye-jin’s bus arrives so she’s left to wonder what that was all about. It’s only after she’s boarded that she realizes that Sung-joon knew which bus was hers.

Ha-ri and Shin-hyuk finish their ride, and she thanks him for helping her. It’s time she put things back where they belong. He gives her a high-five, then asks her not to talk to Hye-jin about him for a while. He doesn’t want her knowing he lives in a hotel, and his puppy-dog face convinces Ha-ri to keep his secret.

Ha-ri goes home and writes a letter to Sung-joon. Hye-jin lies in bed thinking about Sung-joon’s god of opportunity, and she gets up to look through her box of childhood keepsakes again. Her old awards for writing give her confidence, and she goes to work the next day determined to try writing that article.

Reporter Cha gives her some materials she’d compiled to help her, sure she was going to give the article a shot after all, and Hye-jin is bolstered by her confidence in her abilities. She sits at her desk and sees Sung-joon watching her, and they both mime grabbing their forelocks — taking hold of opportunity when it comes.

Shin-hyuk helps Hye-jin carry some children’s books up from the library for inspiration, offering his help on the article if she needs it. He brags about how amazing he is and how other magazines are constantly scouting him — then trips and falls flat on his face, scattering books everywhere. Yep, he’s smooooth.

But later he complains that she’s working so hard, that she doesn’t have time to go eat or talk to him anymore. Still, he watches her work with admiration in his eyes.

Hye-jin works late into the night and falls asleep at her desk, waking up later to find that someone left an energy drink for her. She doesn’t notice Sung-joon watching her from the hall, and smiling.

The next day she leaves to interview a children’s author, and runs into Sung-joon in the parking garage. He warmly wishes her luck on her first assignment, and sends a little Fighting! her way as she goes.

Hye-jin thinks she’s borrowing Reporter Cha’s car, but she took the wrong keys and ended up driving Ah-reum’s car to her interview — the car that still isn’t working well. Her coworkers figure out what’s happened and worry about her driving an unsafe car, and for good reason as the car begins to smoke and falter on the road.

Shin-hyuk rushes out of the office, and a few minutes later when Sung-joon calls in, he overhears people worrying over Hye-jin in the background. He hears that she accidentally took an unsafe car, then sees a news article pop up on his tablet about a woman Hye-jin’s age, critically injured in a car accident in the town she was traveling to.

He goes into instant panic mode, and runs out of the coffee shop, right past Ha-ri who was coming to meet with him and give him her letter. Sung-joon and Shin-hyuk both race to find Hye-jin, and of course it begins to rain.

Sung-joon’s mind races with all the moments he’s spent with Hye-jin, from the big ones like her sheltering him during his panic attack in the road, to small ones like his helping her put a bandage on her finger. He thinks about Shin-hyuk asking him if he has feelings for her, and guns the motor even harder.

Sung-joon arrives at the scene of the accident first and, terrified, asks about the driver. He screams at the policeman to tell him, but he hears her voice calling him from the side of the road — whew, she’s okay.

Sung-joon doesn’t even hesitate, just pulls Hye-jin into his arms, relieved beyond words. From across the street, Shin-hyuk stands and watches.

COMMENTS

Okay, I feel better about Hye-jin’s makeover now that we know she did it for herself and for her professional persona. I’m not a fan of the makeover to get a man, or even worse, the makoever BY a man, in order to make a heroine acceptable dating material. But for Hye-jin to take charge of her life and do something nice for herself? You go, girl. (Though, I’m a leeeetle annoyed at her coworkers for being niceer to her after the makeover. How you treat someone shouldn’t be contingent upon how they look.) Nevertheless, it’s nice to see Hye-jin coming into her own, and finding something that she loves and excels at. Her problem has never been her looks, but lack of confidence, and watching her rebuild that confidence through her actions, and not her appearance, is just wonderful to see. Her improved appearance is just the outward manifestation of her inner confidence starting to shine again.

I was mistaken about Sung-joon figuring out that Hye-jin is HIS Hye-jin, though I’m not terribly disappointed about it, because I would rather Ha-ri fess up and apologize for what she’s done to him. But while I want her to confess and take her medicine for lying, I also want Sung-joon to figure it out himself. It does make me wonder — what will it take for this guy to figure out the truth on his own? He has so many clues that prove that Hye-jin is his childhood friend: the “viciously curly” hair joke she makes, her “It’s a go!” chirp whenever a light turns green, not to mention how comfortable he feels around her when he’s usually so prickly around people. I suppose it’s that damn puzzle piece keeping him from truly putting the pieces together (no pun intended) because remember, he still doesn’t know that Hye-jin and Ha-ri even know each other. If he knew that, it would be simple to figure out that Ha-ri took Hye-jin’s puzzle piece. But without that one piece of information that ties them all together, Sung-joon has no choice but to believe that only his Hye-jin would have the missing piece of his puzzle.

But as frustrated as I am that he hasn’t figured it out himself, I’m mostly glad he still doesn’t know, because it’s allowing him to come to like Hye-jin without those trappings of the past getting in the way. He’s coming to appreciate her for herself, and for how she cares about him. He’s starting to realize that she genuinely likes him despite how he’s treated her in the past, and she’s showing him in different ways that she’s got his back… even if all she can do is sit with him when he’s screwed up, so that he’s not alone.

It was a bit sad, but also telling, when he said it was nice to have someone on his side for once — he’s such a lonely person, and always has been. I get the feeling he was isolated as a child because of his appearance and his nerdlike tendencies, but he’s isolated as an adult by choice. He’s not interested in getting people to like him, and ends up pushing them away. I’d be curious to know whether that’s because he’s just used to living his life that way, or if he has a deeper reason. But he’s finally beginning to understand that first loves aside, who a person is now is what matters. He’s becoming willing to lose the person he thinks is his first love, and the girl he’s been thinking of for nearly twenty years, for a woman he cares about now. The truth that they’re actually one and the same is a lucky bonus, but I’m glad he’s getting to learn that important life lesson before he finds out who Hye-jin truly is.

On the flip side, even though Hye-jin does know the truth, it feels as though she’s learning to like Sung-joon in the same way — as the person he is now, rather than the kid he used to be. Even though she’s the one who knows of their past, she’s put that behind her and is getting to know the Sung-joon that is here now. Lucky for him, she does have that knowledge of their connection that allows her to see past the prickly exterior and give him another chance when he behaves like an ass. She’s not letting the past get in the way, but it does help Hye-jin understand Sung-joon now. It does seem as though her feelings for him now are entirely new — that she’s let go of the past, and that her growing affection for the adult Sung-joon is something all it’s own.

I’m also happy that Ha-ri took some time to reflect on her actions, and is ready to do the right thing. I don’t think she really loves Sung-joon — they barely know each other! And she never seems happy round him, because she’s so busy trying to be Hye-jin that she can never be herself. On the other hand, when she’s with Shin-hyuk she positively lights up, and I think that’s where her true future lies. She can be herself with him, and he’s astute enough to see through her facade to the person she really is. I just hope she gets over her own heartache over Sung-joon soon, because Shin-hyuk is realizing that he’s losing and chance Hye-jin, and Ha-ri is going to have one sad puppy on her hands very soon.

I like that no one is as cool as they like to seem, everyone makes mistakes - but also fesses up to them. This show is full of people with flaws and embarrassing stumbles or near-misses.

... But under our armor, aren't we the same?:) . Probably it is a long shot, but I finished Haruki Murakami's Colorless Tsukuru and his years of pilgrimage and one of the things that seemed more remarkable to me was the dissonance of how Tsukuru viewed himself and how their friends (Red, Blue and Black) thought of him.

We are who we are. When we spend such a long time with the same people (as in the workplace), unless in an hostile environment of course some of our characteristics starts to show.

Agree 100%. Why won't Hye jin acknowledge his awesomeness??? She doesn't have to love him, but there's absolutely no denying that he's been there for her at every turn, and he should be appreciated!

Shin-hyuk is really weird at times that even I would have a hard time acknowledging his awesomeness. But I do think Hye-jin sees his worth, though. It's just that he's difficult to take seriously when this goofy side of him has always been the thing he's showing her.

goofiness is the most serious thing, cause brightening peoples mood and dissolving their self-doubt can make all the difference. he is a total boddhisattva in doing that, a person who exists to ease the sufferings of others and forsakes his own happiness.

but it seems to be doing the exact opposite thing in his feelings for hye-jin, though.

0

Definitely. His goofiness takes her mind off of her worries. But his goofiness aside, he has shared words of encouragement, and been like how you said, supportive, the entire way. I'm HOPING at some point Hye Jin has said 'thank you' to him. But I honestly don't really recall... (and also not about to dig through 9 hours to find it.)

All I ask is for Hye jin to treat him to something yummy unsolicited and say 'thank you for everything' just because she appreciates his friendship. (I would hate it if this scene was carried out as a 'oh I finally understand you're being serious about dating me, but let's just be friends' context)

0

you're elevating SH wayyy too much.

0

I wasnt talking about this character in particular in the above comment, I was just pondering in general, thank you

0

We HOPE Hye jin sees his worth... But I don't see Hye jin seeing his worth. Can we at least get a 'thank you' for Shin Hyuk giving in her idea to SJ, and also bringing it up during the meeting, and always crediting and spotlighting her for her concept?

Hye Jin said 'thank you for worrying about me' to Reporter Cha when she gave her the opportunity to write the article... Shinhyuk is worth at LEAST that right??

LOL I just feel like gratitude needs to be expressed... is that so wrong??

yes, I am on same page with you guys.. I seriously wish she acknowledges him..

and just beacuse Seung Joon encouraged her... she is ready to write an article.. and it was ShinkHyuk rooted all the way for HyeJin to write one.. and she is like 'I CAN'T DO IT'

0

this is in response to love_harini since i cant reply, but the method SH chose to encourage her to write was rather pushy, he put her on the spot and pushed her into the limelight. more of an aggressive approach rather then gentle guidance considering HJ is insecure still, i dont think pushing someone like that would help. whereas SJ provided more of a gentle guidance and left the decision up to her when she is prepared mentally

0

yeah.. Shinhyuk is a bit playful right..

I was so ready to blast Ha Ri for episode 9, thinking that she will continue to use the opportunity of her best friend getting fired to carry on fooling herself to think 'just 2 more months with Sung Joon' but actually, I'm glad she's finally gotten her conscience back and thinking about doing the right thing after having a talk with Shin Hyuk.
I just hope that Ha Ri will give Sung Joon that letter no matter what, even after he left her to go find Hye Jin. It's a good thing she intended to do, a letter will certainly help convey all her reasonings and excuses as to why she lied to him but she should also be there to answer his questions too.

I agree that both Sung Joon and Hye Jin are actually starting to like/fall in love with each other for the people they are now and not because of their shared past. It's good to see Sung Joon has fully warmed up to her, he is accepting her good intentions and letting her in now instead off pushing her away. It was so touching when he flashed back on the memory when they went together to do some location hunting in episode 8 and Hye Jin told him that if he ever needed anyone to write to then he could wrote to her and she would write to him, also that he could always call her to burrow money if the need ever arises since it was so sad that he seemed to have no close friends he could call on the spot to ask for help when he desperately needs it. It's obvious that he likes that she is always going to be there for him.
I feel cheated that we couldn't see more this week because of the episode cancellation for baseball. Ugh.

Yes, the flashback to the beach which was a new scene for us! Hye-jin telling him she can be the person he writes to was the most Hye-jin thing she could say to him. I love this girl. She's definitely moved into my top 3 Korean drama heroines list.

I agree with all that you said. Indeed, there is really no use trapping oneself in the past. The present is more important. This not only applies to love, but also in friendships, or even, in your own discovery of yourself. I really enjoy how the show has been playing around with the concept. It seems that I am like SJ and HJ - I am trying to get over the past too and appreciate people who are with me NOW.

Regarding the cancellation - the bad news is that we may be only expecting 1 episode this coming week as well due to the baseball match again..... I just hope that the match can be over faster as they say that if the match dun past that certain time, the episode will still go on air. Now drama fans on weibo (China social media platform) are commenting on how Korea doesn't have a sports channel and how inconvenient it is on the drama landscape.

I'm definitely glad you reminded me he doesn't know about Hyejin and Hari being friends. That's the one element I keep thinking would have been revealed by now. I guess it's mostly Hari's fault. I don't know how much longer she can pretend to be her friend. It'll be a shock to Hyejin to find out the lie was drawn out. I don't know how they'll get past the reveal.

To be fair, Ha Ri isn't pretending to be Hye Jin's friend - she genuinely is her friend, and appears to love Hye Jin more than anyone else in the world. Through a series of emergency lies and then guilty put-offs, Ha Ri has ended up in a place where her strong interest in Sung Joon is in direct conflict with her absolute love for Hye Jin - it makes her stressed and sick, and she knows she has to fix it.

But if this puts a huge dent in the friendship I'm going to be ticked. Hye Jin was the one who set up Ha Ri as a fake, and Ha Ri would have been perfectly happy to do that one-time favor but got caught by Sung Joon at the hotel. It's somewhat easy to see how Ha Ri passively got towed into all of this - her first active move was the puzzle piece, and that's right around the same time she started to get sick because her lies were now active.

It's so clear that Ha Ri's entire family is contained in Hye Jin. Sometimes we accidentally hurt our sisters: my own sister once white-lied to me in a way that ended up getting discovered, and she also got sick when she realized she was caught. I was flamingly, toweringly angry (not about the subject of the lie, but the fact of the lie itself) for about three days, then we dropped the topic. I know it's something that she can't even think of now without cringing, and I kind of see it as a warning shot: she'd never lied to me like that before, and now she has, she knows exactly what my reaction will be if she does it again and yet we both know it was something that overall didn't damage our connection.

I'd expect the same from Hye Jin and Ha Ri. You don't just cut off your sister about something like this, especially when it's clear that she's feeling so guilty about it she's tearing herself up.

Knowing Hye-jin, she probably won't be as upset as we think. I kind of hope that she forgives Ha-ri easily. Dragging this thing out with Sung-joon and falling for him is a terrible thing for her to do, yes, but the real backlash in this show isn't Ha-ri's betrayal. It's both girls' deception of Sung-joon--that is where the angst of this show should be directed.

I want Ha-ri to tell Hye-jin the truth first, and then from there, Hye-jin can finally tell Sung-joon the truth. We can't forget that she doesn't know Sung-joon is in contact with "Hye-jin," so upon finding out that Ha-ri has been meeting with him, she feels responsible enough for the problem and confesses.

A part of me wants the angst, but the other part of me wants the writer to unexpectedly make Sung-joon not mad about the deceit--that he's actually relieved that Hye-jin is his Hye-jin after all.

Obviously, I've already written this show in my head, so I'll just stop now.

This! Why is no one giving Hye-jin a heads up that they are about to blow her cover? Most of the backlash is going to fall on her going this route and she's being totally blindsided from three directions. I don't get it. Hari needs to tell Hye-jin then Hye-jin needs to tell Sung-joon.

A realistic in-character response would be both, IMO -- anger at the deceit tempered by relief.

@Miranda et.al. This is the first time I've posted on this site, and always enjoy reading everyone's comments. I wanted to respond to this thread regarding Ha Ri and her friendship with our heroine as well as her relationship with our hero and thought that you had some interesting comments .... I'm glad that people feel compassion for her, and support her friendship with Hye. However, I don't agree with some assessments about her character and values or their relationship. We first see her as a child, meeting SJ in her home. Calling him a fatso. All in her life is good at that time (or at least I'm assuming it's good as a few episodes later we see her having a birthday celebration with her parents). Then we see Hye meeting him kind, considerate and welcoming. A true reflection of how they value people. I think that for HaRi life has been pretty much all about her. What has been difficult? Not much. She has a job that she got through her father, pays the bills, allows her to live a fairly easy life. She has her looks, people that flock to her, want to be around her and I know it's somewhat superficial, but that is how she has chosen to live her life with unconditional love and depth coming from Hye. Hye takes care of her, dotes on her, mothers her...is her everything- her world as you say. I see it as "all for her'. I know that it always hasn't been smooth sailing -there is tension with her mother leaving, her father and step mother etc. but, she has Hye, her family and pretty much the world in her lap. Hye has to struggle, work hard, swallow insults at every turn. No job, getting called ugly all of the time, her sister calls her ugly, is disparaging and the scene at her home where they are having a celebration for her new job? They start eating without her....she lost a lot, her wealth, her looks, her confidence etc. SJ is the one thing in her life that she has/remembers as truly special just for her alone. She instigates the whole thing in order to preserve SJ's memories of her as she was because that was precious. It's for him and she's ashamed of where she has ended. The way he treated her, the person she cared for most...told her that a person like her does not deserve to have that name because it's special....wow. Ha Ri knows, has known all along that he has been a total jerk to her yet she has kept up her charade on her own for herself...if you knew that the guy that your sister loved and had carried a torch was being treated this way a guy that you just met, for her sake would you just ho hum it along? Ha Ri "took" what was special for both of them for herself. She won't let him talk about their past, something that goes to the core of who he is, the love and understanding that Hye gave him that helped him get his confidence back...she knows that this will hurt Hye as well as SJ. First Love...he is her first love? She knows nothing about him. He is nice to her because he thinks she is his...

oh my goshhhh. this is my very first time commenting and thank you so much for this wonderful comment. I am usually not the type to get all teary by comments and stuff but you portrayed it really well on how much Hye Jin must have suffered and how much the bond must have been special between SJ and HJ. I totally agree with you on thatttt!!!

You raise a lot of good points, but I'd say that beauty isn't all it's cracked up to be. It's opened a lot of doors for Ha Ri but also commoditized her, so the guys who are attracted to her tend to treat her like a toy. Her stepmother is very clear that all she cares about it keeping up appearances, without caring at all about Ha Ri herself. Her father is the type of man who will smack her across the face and then try to guilt her into buckling under to an emotional abuser. Ha Ri does not have many people who actually care about HER.

Hye Jin and her family are some of those people, but that must come with a little bit of pain as well, since it looks like Ha Ri had a similar family structure until her parents split.

Sung Joon didn't see her as a Barbie, and he was so willing to like her. That must have been so incredibly seductive, especially after Hye Jin pretty much washed her hands of him. Ha Ri started down this road thinking that Hye Jin never wanted to see him again - obviously that's not how things are turning out. But I think she's an emotionally damaged girl who just craved the sort of connection Sung Joon offered, and didn't realize how bad things could get until it was too late and Hyuk Shin laid it out for her.

I have to disagree with you.

You said that everything was great when Ha Ri first met Sung Joon, but it wasn't. She was leaving her best friend and her home to move with her family to another country where they speak an entirely different language and Sung Joon and his family are the interlopers who were taking her house.

Ha Ri's life hasn't been all wonderful. Materially, it may have been easier, but I've never gotten the impression that she has her job based on anything but her own competence. Plus, there's plenty that's painful. Her mother died (Ha Ri doesn't know Mom's alive) and her father chose (and continues to choose) his new wife over her. The woman is cruel and abusive and the dad chooses to not care about Ha Ri's pain. Unless you've been through that with a parent, I don't think you'd get how much that it hurts and how long that hurt can last. Her father's betrayal led her to believe that all men's love is a lie, which is why she never fell in love before now and only sought out relationships where she wouldn't risk falling in love.

You also said that Ha Ri has been all about herself and Hye Jin was the unconditionally giving side of the relationship. I disagree. From the beginning of the series, Ha Ri has consistently and defiantly been Hye Jin's biggest defender and cheerleader. Within the first 5 minutes of the series, she stilletto'd a guy in the foot and dumped him for insulting Hye Jin. Hye Jin had at most a part-time paycheck so Ha Ri's the one who has been paying the rent on their apartment. She practically begged Hye Jin to meet up with Sung Joon and only reluctantly went along with everything because that's what Hye Jin wanted. Ha Ri is utterly alone in this world, rejected by her family. That type of thing haunts the way nothing else can. Hye Jin at least has her family as a cheering section and people who will never abandon her, regardless of how she looks.

While I don't condone what she's done, she hasn't done it without feeling it eat away at her conscience. Her guilt went as far as to put her in the hospital. That's not someone who is all about herself.

Knowing Hye Jin's personality, she'd probably be more apologetic to Ha Ri for putting her in that situation in the first place. The bond between the girls is as deep as I have ever seen between two people in a Kdrama so I am not even remotely worried that this incident will cause a rift in their friendship.

I also thought that this would be the thing that will separate the couple before the happy ending... hope they don't go this way...

Also, I am among the ones that don't get why Ha Ri is getting so much hate. She was seeing Seung Joon because Hye Jin asked for it. She couldn't tell him the truth without hurting Hye Jin in the process, so she went on with the ruse, until the point arrived where she realized she had fallen for him. Then she had a moment of weakness and gave him the puzzle piece and kissed him, only to ending up feeling guilty and physically sick. Now she is making an effort to clear things.
I also thought that she should tell Hye Jin the truth, but after thinking about it, I find understandable that she doesn't do it. It is a thing that could mess a friendship forever, so I might also try to forget the guy in secret and not telling anything to my friend....In summary, it is an unfortunate situation built up from bad choices, starting by Hye Jin's. Hope the truth comes out soon, and they have all their happy ending, including Ha Ri and Hyun Suk. I wouldn't mind if they start dating in the end, they seem to connect quite well :D

I don't get the hate either. It's not like she's doing it out of spite or she just doesn't care how it will affect Hye Jin. She's like a drug addict who needs an intervention. It's tearing her up inside but she's just too weak to walk away from the Sung Joon high.

0

Here’s why Ha Ri gets hate:

Hye Jin asked Ha Ri to play as her for one day only- the reunion day with Seung Joon, which was also the (fake) departure day for Hye Jin. She never told Ha Ri to continue doing it, because she didn’t think Seung Joon would ever run into Ha Ri in real life. Ha Ri continuing to play as Hye Jin and fool Seung Joon (and not telling Hye Jin about it) is all on her.
Ha Ri is being incredibly selfish. She tells herself that she’ll pursue Seung Joon for 3 months, even if that means that she gets hurt in the end. Not only will she get hurt, but she’ll also hurt Hye Jin and Seung Joon, who is the victim here. She was only thinking about herself and her happiness when she made these decisions.
It’s understandable why Ha Ri doesn’t tell Hye Jin about this, but it’s not acceptable to not tell her. Again, she would be only thinking about herself if she keeps it a secret from Hye Jin. She’s trying to protect herself and her only friendship. She can’t return to her family and the only other friends she has want to get in her pants. By keeping secrets as big as these, she’s only setting herself up for doom.

I think there's some merit to her because she does want to do good and confess, but it's just taking way too long. Good thing Seung Joon is falling for the real Hye Jin or I would've been frustrated out of my wits if he fell in love with fake Hye Jin!!!

HyeJin, you go girl!
I just can't help but keep on cheering her on. She's such an awesome woman who knows how to live her life regardless of what other people might say.
I loved this episode. Every scene gave me different feels. ShinHyuk being jealous is so cute ??
And really, he's so not normal. Lol.
I really cringed when Kim RaRa was giving her speech. Then teared up after she said how they strangely looked beautiful in her eyes. ?
I just love every character in this drama. Even Hari who seems to be getting much hate. ?
Now that she decided to do what's right, I hope, fate will never give her the chance to delay telling SungJoon what the truth it.

While Shin-hyuk most certainly is not normal, how cool is it that in reality, he's the smartest person in the room! He's not petty like the rest of the Most Team, can sense intuitively what a person is feeling and sees most, if not all, that's going on around him when everyone else is clueless.

Also, who else here thinks that Chief Editor Kim was a dead-ringer for Betsey Johnson the evening of the event?

I was TOTALLY expecting SH to go on stage and be serious to show a different side of him! Since we know that he is the nephew of the chief editor, he may be the most knowledgeable among the editors (ok maybe excluding or on par with Sung Joon).

Ah, chief editor kim..... As much as she told HJ to be 'most-like' , I want to tell her to be 'normal-like'. Her fashion sense is so out of the blue, I am really irritated. But her fashion sense is so funny too, like, i am looking forward to her fashion every episode hahas.

Also, i realise that she always appear during the critical moments/when the team needs her. She may appear to be that kind of big boss who doesn't interfere with the team's mundane work, but she is always there for them in many ways. Like, she was the one told the team to choose A or B within 5 seconds and told them that what you choose instantly is what you have on your mind (i think this line will be constantly repeated for future episodes in our 4some line), and she was nowhere to be seen during the preparation of the ceremony, but she popped out of nowhere when SJ was absent.

Her speech was also endearing - she didn't prepare at all, but it was entertaining but still to the point; I doubt SJ is able to deliver such an entertaining speech hahas.

I, too, love how Joon's reaction to the makeover was no reaction. I finally felt that he just might be in love with her, at that - because the surface is so unimportant compared to the fact that she just IS. My husband is like that, too - most of the time, I think he watched me walk down the aisle and hasn't really looked since, 25 years later. And most of the time, this is a great blessing, lol!

And I also had no sympathy for HaRi's pitty party. It's always about her, and until I see her do something really warm, caring and self-sacrificing for someone else, I don't want to pair her up with anybody.

Right? If I was writing this show, that's how I would've written Sung-joon's reaction, so I'm really, really glad that this show is continually meeting my expectations. Like I was happy he was happy that she was back.

Along with his non-reaction, the other best part of this episode was him finally acknowledging her as a colleague. Not as an intern, or as a troublemaker, but as a professional. He knows how important this is to her, so when he gave her the badge, it was the sweetest thing.

And that, sadly, is why Shin-hyuk will never be with Hye-jin. He's so great and goofy, but he doesn't understand Hye-jin at her most basic core. His one moment of sincerity with her led her to unknowingly take the place of his dog, for crying out loud! He's all tricks and flash and nonstop teasing with her, leaving room for Sung-joon to slip in and connect with her on a personal level.

Really, the gifts of the badge and the fancy purse highlight the difference between both men.

OMG I SO AGREE WITH THIS! You have definitely pointed out why I have been feeling off about SH - everyone is complimenting on how great he is, but i am just not as attracted to him as i am with SJ (pls my character is very Hye Jin like, i have to admit HAHA). SJ's actions definitely feel more sincere and, although he had much lesser 'fun' time with HJ as compared to SH who keeps having meals with HJ, he made full use of it to hit the soft spots in HJ, without much effort and without even being aware of it. Less is more. HJ and SJ's chemistry is more subtle but I feel so much more for them at an emotional level. The onion plot is one example - they have not mentioned to each other verbally abt that one onion, but he still took care of it (I supposed) when she wasn't around, and he used it as a ploy to get her back.

The onion! I swear, when I see onions in real life, I'll always think about this show.

The emotions I get as a viewer will always outweigh anything else about a show, so I completely agree with you about feeling for Hye-jin and Sung-joon's connection.

And I love Shin-hyuk, but he's just never been 'real' with Hye-jin the way Sung-joon has been with her. In fact, the only person he's been real with is Ha-ri, and so I totally ship that.

couldnt agree with both of your comments, firts of topioca peral, you hit the nail on the head, that really is the difference between the two men and thats how ive been feeling. its great SH has been a supportive friend but he doesnt seem to get HJ on a personal and emotional level as you mentioned with the dog situation. and to dranmalover i've connected more to SJ even though i find SH funny, i find him funny and goofy and quirky but on a personal and emotional level i dont connect to him and like i do with SJ and maybe thats whats happening with HJ.

Yes! You guys are so right. SH is very entertaining as a character but as a romantic interest for HJ, he's missing something. So while a lot of us were fawning over him, I just never really felt it. I can't take him seriously and neither can HJ.

In any case, he's doing what second leads are supposed to do and he is designed to appeal to us and seem like the perfect guy. But oddly, I connect with SJ more.

I was wondering where people were seeing a romantic spark between HJ and SH because they have a more platonic feel. I just love how SJ lights up around HJ. Ep 7 showed how great they would be together.

I agree. Shin Hyuk is intelligent, but he doesn't get Hye Jin. He was complaining about Hye Jin's change of look and was forcing Hye Jin to do the fairy tale story. He had a point, but it doesn't help Hye Jin in the slightest.

Hye Jin owns her change in physical appearance (whether it's for the good or the bad), and also had to grab a hold of the story by herself, not by being goaded into it.

glad im not the only one that found him complaining she changed and looked better as a bit of a ehrr... im guessing its because she isnt playing and hanging with him like before and before she was really all over the place and jumpy, i guess he misses that but she has become more focused and more confident because of reasons mentioned in the show. i found it more as a back handed compliment of sort, rather then how everyone was making it out to be sweet and romantic. im not sure if i would like to be told by someone they liked me better before or i looked better before.

You know what's interesting about the reveal? From the layout of that office, I get the impression that Sung Joon didn't actually see her face. He could see her back (so the hair and kind of the clothes) and could see everyone else's shocked reaction, but he doesn't make any sort of move to come and look at her face. He smiles from the hall and just keeps walking.

It jumped out at me while watching, because it's just natural instinct to want to see what everyone else is gaping at, and he didn't even look curious, just pleased that Hye Jin was getting complimented.

I feel that his character is like that though. I know some teachers and friends who seem to be very 'in control' of their emotions, but when they are angry, man, you better watch your back - they are way angrier and scarier than others. These are the people who prove that humans are this scary. I feel that they (and SJ) have been hiding their feelings (both negative and positive) within themselves - which is actually unhealthy. Humans are meant to have negative emotions and it is OK to show them and not act like god.

i wonder what SH eill do since he gave the advice to HR that they are each others fisrt love, but he is going to pursui HJ knowing she has feelings for SJ. i suppose HJ will straight up tell him will maybe do the trick. the thing is i feel lie SJ understand her better, i mean with SJ he does thing really subtly instead of overtly and loud like SH so his action isnt give n the limelight and attention, it goes unnoticed except for the one his doing it for sometimes. i feel like it doesnt matter to him though he just does thing and doesnt care whether he gets recognition or not as long as what he is doing for the person helps them, even the way he encouraged her t take the opportunity to write was really sublt from SH approach. i loved his non reaction it felt really good that whatever HJ is, whether she has her old look, new look or any other kind of look he will always love her as long as who she is on the inside stays the same.

I agree with everything you said and others said afterwards.
Although SH is very observant and cute and goofy, it's the little things(and some big things) that Joon does for her that is really thoughtfull and meaningful. Like I don't think I would have waded through cow manure to find that badge. But He did, and didn't want her to know that he did it. It's so sweet how they try to inconspicously care for each other whether they are acknowledged for it or not. They meet each other's needs.

While I absolutely adore SH, and he makes me laugh,as I've said before, I really want them to keep a brother-sister like relationship. I'm glad HaRi is coming around, because I really like the relationship that she and HJ have - very rare for kdramas. And yes I was mad at her - not hate (that's too strong of a word), just angry like you would a child or a sibling. I hope she continues on her path to do Hye Jin right.

Like you guys, love the onion! You guys have hit the nail on the head so many times in this thread :)

"Honestly his lack of a reaction was such an important..."Exactly my thoughts. His "no reaction" was one of the best subtle emotions that this drama beautifully captures. I loved that her external beauty doesn't really matter to him. He didn't blink an eye lid!!! He likes her what what she is, freckles or no freckles, bad hair or silky straight! I loved this episode.
I also like that she chose to get herself a makeover and was not forced upon her.

I have to disagree. I don't think her coworkers showed much extra reactions to her makeover. And that change in behaviour was only shown by that girl who caused her firing off in the first place and that too due to her guilt. So basically, rest of them already treated her well enough. I'm happy the whole thing was played in a low-key way.

I agree to this! However, am i the only one here who is concerned about how she hid those freckles/pimples? By makeup? Man, that is bad for the skin if she applied thick makeup despite her very bad skin condition. I think her makeover is too extreme for one thing - her hair and fashion can change, but her freckles have to remain (ok maybe tone down). It is too unrealistic now.

At least her freckles and flushed cheeks are there when she's at home, when she doesn't need to have the polished and professional look.

It'll be good to see Sung Joon spend time outside of work showing his love for her with her "real face and skin," even with the new straightened hair.

Required fields are marked *

like @Major Dickason pointed out, she doesn't keep the makeup on at home, she's not wearing it 24/7.

Makeup doesn't have to damage your skin as long as it's worn for only a certain amount of time (i.e. while Hye-jin is at work) and thoroughly removed afterwards.

(the one quibble I have is that they need not have straightened the living daylights out of Hye-jin's hair as if that was the only option. She could just have had softer, more defined curls BUT I realise that curly hair takes a lot of work to look pretty, so for Hye-jin's day-to-day life, a straightened hairstyle was probably more in line with her needs - look professional and not need too much time and product to maintain on a daily basis).

The way things have gotten complicated makes this unraveling even better. There's some pretty obvious lovelines of course but we got to know the characters outside of them and the characters themselves got to know each other outside of a romantic context and that makes this a lot more comfortable and satisfying.

I HATE BASEBALL! That was not supposed to be this week's cliffhanger! We were supposed to get another episode tomorrow! So upset. I was more worried about Shin Hyuk getting into an accident than I was Sung Joon. Riding a motorcycle in the rain is never safe. I love how Sung Joon conquered his fear by tunnel visioning on Hye Jin. Her promise to write him a letter and offer to be his phone-a-friend brought tears to my eyes. She is an absolute angel.

As much as I despise Hari for not telling Sung Joon before, I really do not want her to tell him now. The truth must come from Hye Jin, and Hye Jin only. The longer she lies, the more betrayed he is going to feel. I need to get those two episodes of angst over with. He will blow up at her, ignore her, then realize he cannot live without her. I would not be able to properly swoon at his imminent confession if he were still in the dark. I was ecstatic when he fell for Hye Jin without knowing she was his Hye Jin, but it is ridiculously unfair how he is being flat-out lied to by all three of them (although it is not Shin Hyuk's place to reveal the girls' lie).

I melt every time Sung Joon smiles, and he smiled a lot this episode. I love how not only did he not flip out at the Most staff for talking behind his back, but he emphatically admitted it was his fault and genuinely considered this to be a blessing in disguise since he, at least, had one person defending him. He is so glass half-full now under Hye Jin's influence. I also love how Sung Joon never made a big deal about her makeover. That smile of his translated into "I'm so happy she's back," not "Wow, she looks pretty." But I most love how Shin Hyuk had the exact reaction we wanted him to have -- hating Jackson's makeover.

I am a fan of cheese, so the "You Are The Hero" montage made me tear up. Chief Editor is the best (and her English is impressive). I was annoyed Hye Jin did not abandon her post to go white knight Sung Joon, but was relieved when he safely arrived by himself. I appreciate her silent support, but can't she at least sit next to the poor boy? Seeing her plain yellow umbrella, where the heck is her "Dance in the Country" umbrella?

Thanks a bunch, LollyPip, for retracting the misinterpretation that Sung Joon had figured out the truth on his own in Episode 8's recap and for your thoughtful analysis in Episode 9's recap.

The last time I felt this way was back in 2012 when we had to watch only 1 episode of Gaksital for two weeks in a row because of the Olympics! I love that this show has so many fans now (viewer ratings went up again!) considering how few people watched the premiere.

And yes, the truth should come from Hye-jin and Hye-jin alone. Then Ha-ri can apologize to both of them.

Airing sports during the week isn't strange. That's simply when they happen. Especially with baseball! Is anyone going to watch a game that happened on Monday if you air it on Saturday? Not really. Also, I don't know about Korean baseball's schedule but here in the US we're approaching the World Series, so people will want to watch even more than usual.

I do think that they should have a sports channel, though. But maybe they don't have enough sports for it to be worthwhile? What's popular in Korea besides baseball and soccer?

I don't think she was treated any differently by her coworkers. I liked their reaction. It's how my coworkers would behave on the few occasions when I went the extra mile to 'pretty up'. The girl who started calling her unni felt bad because she felt responsible for Hye Jin being terminated. The reactions were refreshingly not over-exaggerated and they were just really happy to have her back.

I love that she made over herself and it wasn't orchestrated by a guy. It's also nice that at nights her freckles return and her hair still remained a bit unkempt. She didn't become a diva...she just decided to make an extra effort to look nicer and there's nothing wrong with that because her fashion really wasn't very nice looking.

yeah, the last episode made it genuinely clear they missed her as a colleague - they came to appreciate the work she did when they were struggling to keep up after she was fired. So their welcome +compliments (believable response to her new look) don't seem in any way unrealistic, especially in a fashion magazine office.

The other thing I loved about the makeover is that the new clothes she buys are just slightly upgraded versions of her old ones - she bought nicer jeans, jackets and blouses, she's not going around in super-fashionable clothes like Ha-ri's. And she takes the freckle-covering makeup off when she's at home!

Yes, yes and yes. The one thing I would have rejected to would have been a personality change. It happens all the time in dramas and I love our Hye-Jinnie through and through. I wouldn't change who she was for the world though a bit more confidence would be great.

I teared up when Ha Ri hugged Hye Jin. To me the was very moving and reminded her that Hye Jin was her 'first love'. While I don't agree with her action, (especially the puzzle piece), I feel like this is the first male that showed her 'normal' attention so she was caught off guard. I'm really happy to see her struggling with her emotions and finally deciding to do the right thing.

I think her co-workers were always nice to her, but showed appreciation for her changed looks and even 'MORE' happy to have her back.

Shin Hyuk is making me laugh and shake my head. How are we all going to deal with his broken heart puppy dog eyes?

Are we sure Sung Joon doesn't suspect she's his child hood friend? Either way I like that they are liking each other as adults now.

Thanks for the recaps LollyPip!

I think I understand Ha-ri a bit more this episode. I've never hated her, and I still think that when this drama's over, I'll be happy with her character.

I concur with your statement that she doesn't love Sung-joon. She's in love with the idea of having someone for her own. She doesn't have an awesome family like Hye-jin's, nor does she have Hye-jin's ability to connect with people. With Sung-joon, she was able to pretend to be Hye-jin maybe because a part of her always envied the stability that Hye-jin had, so she wanted some of that for herself for once. Her pouting that Sung-joon is her first love too tells me that she just wants normalcy--a happy family, a first love, being able to fall in love. She just doesn't realize that she already has all of that in Hye-jin, which is why I loved their backhug. Best backhug ever! Really, their friendship is what I want to be the best thing about this show, even though I love everything else.

Also, I love how low-key Hye-jin's makeover was. I laughed out loud when it showed her going to the mall to get her makeup done because it's what I should have expected. I love that Sung-joon was just so happy to see her back. I was nervous that the writer was going to have him tell her she was pretty (hur hur), which I would've disliked, so I was super happy that none of that was ever said. I love Shin-hyuk's reaction because it basically mirrored our reaction, but at the same time, we still love Hye-jin no matter what.

One more thing I want to address is how much I love the music in this show. Music is never make or break for me when it comes to dramas, but it is the difference between loving a show and being obsessed with it. And I'm obsessed with this one, so yay for the music! It's just very tonal and puts me in a good mood, and it really adds to the scene. The music in the last scene made me actually want to stand up and scream.

Anyway, LollyPip, I enjoyed reading your analysis of Sung-joon's character. He was the one character I was hoping to get a lot of development for, and I'm very satisfied with how he is being written.

I like that Ha Ri might be head over heels for Sung Joon because they started off at a post-first-impressions place: Sung Joon already thought they had a bond and was already looking to strengthen that as a friendship. And to be honest, Ha Ri and Hye Jin do share a lot of traits when they're alone - they're both fundamentally kind, they're both caretakers of a sort. It must be novel for Ha Ri to encounter someone who recognizes those more-buried traits in her before anything else.

I think it's also important to note that Ha Ri has almost never pretended to BE Hye Jin - she's borrowed the name, and there was the regrettable puzzle piece instance, but most of the time she's just being Ha Ri with a Hye Jin sticker on her.

Required fields are marked *

I feel mostly sad for Ha Ri. While it is true that she felt Sung Joon was the first guy who she thinks is nice to her without trying to grope her around, it is entirely her choice to go out with these type of men to begin with. You can't really say all men are shallow if you choose to date only shallow men. She needs to realize herself that she has more to offer than her pretty face and body.

i agree with your comment on HR i never hated her but boy did i get really frustrated and annoyed with her lol like i did with SJ. i mean that in a good way, its great to see characters who are flawed and see them change and grow from from start to finish. and i think SJ has seen the biggest growth from the start and hye jin and HR for me are interchangeable in growth cause HR at the moment is at the stage of redeeming herself. and shin hyuk is last his been the same from the start and is kind the least flawed among the the 4 if we had to compare

Nat,

I love this show, but the characters behave in ways totally contrary to their personalities at times. Its as if they stop being people and turn into puppets. I felt that when Ha Ri stole the puzzle piece, when Sung Joon arbitrarily fired Hye Jin and when Shin Hyuk turned into a guardian angel for Ha Ri.

That being said, I agree with all the other comments about the makeover, how understated and matter of fact it was. The writer earns brownie points for it which cancels the quibbles above :)

No. Reading the comments and recap make me feel kind of better about it, but I found it messy while watching. I'm not sure if I can explain why. I've been skeptical of the writers for a while now, but this episode really did feel like they have a point A and point B and don't really care at all to be careful when going from one to the other. To borrow someone else's words, the writing is clunky and it makes moments that should have impact eye roll worthy.

Loved everything about this episode. ?
Sung Joon quiet smile when Hye Jin was back and gift that made Shin Hyuk scoff with jealousy. Petty jealous Shin Hyuk was hilarious!
And Hari is finally putting Hye Jin before her own self. I always did like her even when she made the mistake of taking the puzzle piece. We've all done stupid thing. Hopefully she gets to tell Sung Joon the truth.

Sung Joon is definitely in love with Hye Jin now. It was great seeing him over come driving in the rain and plowing on to the accident site. The relief hug he gave her...awww. ?
Its also great that he now respect her as a colleague and gave her that advice about grabbing the forehair. So cute how Hye Jin was grabbing her forehair to show Sung Joon she's going for it. His proud smile he gave her and the little "fighting".
He's going to feel so betrayed when he finds out the truth though. Hopefully the writer doesn't make him punish Hye Jin too much as her only mistake was omiting she was his Hye Jin. And if he does revert back to his cold man cave, Shin Hyuk can go and drag him out. Lol ? Lets get some more bromance writernim!

Reporter Cha: "shin hyuk, when are you going to grow up"
Shin Hyuk: "tomorrow" rflmao!!!! ?

Kim Lala: "I've exceded my english, now where's the subtitles" lol ?
Her english was extremely good! Bravo Kim Lala! ?

I dont think Hye Jin colleagues was just nice to her because of the makeover. They were just glad one of their team was back cos they realized they took her for granted cos she did as much work if not more than them.
Even Seul was feeling guilty for getting her fired and made up for it by being nicer and calling Hye Jin "unnie".

Now, I love Shin Hyuk--I really do. He's absolutely excellent.

But I can only have so many "unpopular opinions" before I admit to myself...Sung Joon is my favorite character.

I just think he's so much more interesting? I don't know..and it has nothing to do with the jerk with a heart of gold, either. Like, when he yelled at the girl for being late, I was like "Okay, as always rude but right." And then, later he held himself to the SAME STANDARD. Like, ugh, I loved that.

I also loved how (even if it was unintentional) when Shin Hyuk said he liked the old "Jackson," Sung Joon didn't even say anything about it. He was the only one, other than Ha Ri, that did not say anything about the change in Hye Jin's appearance. And I just loved that.

This was a confession, and I'm taking this secret to my grave, but I like Sung Joon the best out of everyone (with Hye Jin damn near tied) and while Shin Hyuk is entertaining, I just feel like he's a one trick pony (side tangent: that statement reads harsher than I mean it, because I do LOVE Shin Hyuk. It's just that his character is consistently good and considerate. His flaw is that he's dim, but he's still pretty perceptive. So where are his REAL flaws? I think his REAL flaw is that he's callous, but so far they've just made it a harmless flaw. I think that could have made him much more interesting if they just went with something grander for him, to flesh his character out).

Yes, this! Although I think a lot of people still prefer SH over SJ? And as bad as it sounds, I feel like a lot of people viciously support Shin Hyuk because he's Siwon; they've built up this image of a cute SuJu member and subsequently follow his activities. I think Shin Hyuk is a great character because he's written that way and because Siwon can pull it off, not JUST because Siwon is the face behind it. I turned on the Viki comments, and I remember being vaguely pissed that everyone kept calling him Siwon instead of Shin Hyuk; no one else calls any of the characters by the actors' names.

So, can't really call me a Siwon fan (well, you can now... he TOTALLY won me over in this role) but I LOVE Shin-hyuk. He's a great second lead after years and years of perfect Daddy Long Legs who never confess their feelings and Chingu/Oppa-Zone themselves out of the running in the first episode. You notice he hasn't pulled that "Brother/Sister" card since he realized that he like Hye-jin? And he's fun! We love him because he's fun!

honestly agree with all your comments, dont get me wrong i also like SH i think he is funny and weird but he is literally the perfect 2nd lead, even if he has flaws they seem to make it just another funny and quirky part of him and into something that isnt a issue, its becomign tedious. i also agree with your comment about siwon fans, cause i see that as well, i mean siwon has been on the scene longer then PSJ and is more famous then him therefore has a huge and very dedicated fanbase. and seems like they hate SJ as i've seen some comments which seem weirdly vicious to me rather then valid crticism, which would be fine. like here and soompi forum people have great analysis on SJ and his character and how he seems to have a better understanding of HJ and he connects with her on a personal level in contrast with SH etc but they just completely disregard that. idk i just usually ignore it cause it seems more and more the case of fangirlism , cause some of the comments just seem hateful, more then anything, judging my viki comments although there seems to be equally more support for SJ on there as well to combat it. of course i dont mean all siwon and suju fans though. but im glad im not the only one with this sentiment

You're not alone! Seong-joon and Hye-jin are tied for being my favorite.

"I just think he’s so much more interesting? I don’t know..and it has nothing to do with the jerk with a heart of gold, either. Like, when he yelled at the girl for being late, I was like “Okay, as always rude but right.” And then, later he held himself to the SAME STANDARD. Like, ugh, I loved that."

Yeah, this is also why I can't really dislike him for his previous missteps. He's a hardass and a perfectionist, but not hypocritical. For example, he doesn't get mad or reprimand his colleagues when they bash him, he doesn't expect their deference.

"I also loved how (even if it was unintentional) when Shin Hyuk said he liked the old “Jackson,” Sung Joon didn’t even say anything about it. He was the only one, other than Ha Ri, that did not say anything about the change in Hye Jin’s appearance. And I just loved that."

I loved how this subtlety showed an important difference between Shin-hyeok and Seong-joon wrt how they think of Hye-jin.

I really love how the relationships between people really grow, and even though there were missteps and some bad moments, Sung Joon and Hye jin have truly proven that they should be the OTP.

I feel horrible for Shin hyuk though (I never ever get second lead syndrome), but I can't remember the last time a second lead was so interesting. CSW really steals the show with his gags, love the comic relief!

I have to say, this show really highlights for me why I can't write recaps: every single screenshot would be of Shin Hyuk's priceless faces and all the text would basically be variations of "And then he made this face, look at this face!"

And that just wouldn't do the show credit. As much as I adore this goofy, kind character, though, there's a lot more going for the story. Someone mentioned above that all of the characters have flaws in one way or another, and that pretty well sums it up for me. It's not a perfect story, but there is a lot to love about the characters, and I'm enjoying watching their ride.

I know Ha Ri is getting a lot of hate, but I like her. Since the very beginning she has always been on Hye Jin's side. She blows off her would be suitors for her (at her birthday party in the first episode), and is genuinely happy FOR Hye Jin when she gets a good job.

It gets over looked that Ha Ri feels as isolated as Sung Joon. Like Sung Joon Ha Ra's only person in her life who likes her for who she is, is Hye Jin.

And it was so sad when she broke down and confessed that Sung Joon was her first love. But what I think she really meant, was that he was the first person outside of Hye Jin who let her know she was more than her face. And I don't think she loves him, but that it hurts her to know that she has to let go of not him, but the feelings he brings out I her.

Also love that she's not the typical bitchy villain. She's just really conflicted about her betrayal of her best friend and her feelings for wanting to feel worth more than what her family and others see her as.

Comon, you got to like a girl who gets completely dancy-singy goofy with you and sends you money no questions asked.

But, there's no denying that big comeuppance is coming soon.

I really actually like that this show doesn't have a villain. It's refreshing that the people who do things wrong are just that; people. I feel like Ha Ri gets a lot of hate, but people forget that at the end of the day she does place her friendship with Hye Jin above all else. She's not "faking" a friendship (ugh, I hated it when comments said she was a traitor); she does not benefit by remaining friends with Hye Jin other than the moral support. I just hope that Hye Jin and Ha Ri remain friends by the end, because they're friendship is actually the first thing about the show that drew me in.

@ (Clover & Anna M.) I agree with both of you. What really drew me in was the very strong friendship between Hye Jin and Ha Ri. As strange as the situation, so far, Ha Ri's actions seem somewhat believable. I truly hope that Hye Jin will be understanding as to why her friend kept up the relationship with Sung Joon. They seem to known each other really well.

I'm also glad there is no real villain, just people making mistakes.

+100. She was stressing me out in ep 8 but I can't really hate her though she disappointed me when she stole the puzzle piece. I like that she is not the typical second lead. She has a conscience and she knows she's wrong. She feels real. She has made bad decisions and struggles with that but she has made up her mind to come clean. I just hope she follows through with the letter because doing the opposite would not do well for her depiction for me. I was over her but I do pity her unwillingly every once in a while. Like, maybe she isn't as bad as we think?

My main concern would be that if Hye-Jin figured out that Ha-Ri liked Sung-Joon that she would step out of the picture for the sake of her friend. She knows how hard it has been for Ha-Ri to find someone to love so she may be willing to step aside for the sake of her friend. That would take the whole Noble Idiot thing to a whole new level.

I don't think that's going to happen--and I think Ha-Ri is the reason it's not going to. If she was going to slip into the depths of second lead lady hell, she would have by now (I hope!) and tearfully confessed the sordid tale to Hye-Jin while dropping hints that Hye-Jin should back off so she could have him. While Ha-Ri has shown some selfishness, such as with the puzzle piece, I don't think she's going to sink that low.

Although I didn't feel she needed the makeover, I liked how the two men reacted to it; Shin Hyuk wanting her not to change and Sung Joon just happy to see her back at work. Did anyone notice that Shin Hyuk's tantrum over the badge is the exact same tantrum that Hye Jin threw in episode three when he asked her about why she a fear of seung joon

I just love SH. How humble he is..working at his dad's company..always so shabby...
And what? The bag was at 90% discount? Lol. Luckily HJ doesnt really follows fashion or else she would already noticed that THAT bag won't be selling at 90% discount.
Although HS is playful n loud...i think deep inside he is a loner too...hey, he lives at a hotel! That seems so..lonely... to me.
I hope the drama will tell us more bout him. I guess the craziness runs in the family. Kim LaLa is one crazy lady, and obviously she is his aunt. Lol

Yes, Shin Hyuk does come off very lonely, which is why I think he's always ready to crack a joke. This is one of the reasons it's going to be so hard to watch his heart get broken.

On the other hand I am really looking forward to when Seul finds out who the real nephew is!

Alright... at this point I feel like I really don't care about Hye jin and Sung joon getting together. I mean, we're obviously going down that road, and that's fine. I would just like to see Shin hyuk's awesomeness be acknowledged.

I don't understand why Hye jin is always annoyed at him? Yea, he's a little shit for all the teasing, etc. But it's also obvious that he does alot for her and encourages her to be the way she is, and never giving her crap for how she is. How can she not appreciate this? In turn, she just looks at him like he's despicable. Not even in a best friend joking manner... it's just 'please get away from me' ugh.

I really really did not like how she valued sung joon's push for her to take the opportunity to write the article as oppose to shin hyuk's - especially when Shin Hyuk knows Hye Jin better than sung joon!! I just do not like Hye Jin when she deals with Shin Hyuk... it's just not cool. I don't expect her to fall in love with Shin Hyuk (though why not?) but at least treat the man with proper appreciation!

I didn't get that Hye Jin is annoyed with Shin Hyuk, I think she treats him as a joking buddy. She does appreciate him as a buddy but not as a man. It's kinda hard to take Shin Hyuk confession seriously because he jokes around too much. I mean he told her she reminded him of his dog!

Yes, I get how and why she wouldn't take the confession seriously, and I don't blame her.

But so far, there hasn't been much of a show of appreciation towards Shin Hyuk. All the niceness from before was because she thought she reminded him of his dead sister. But once that was revealed, it was like "shoo, Shin Hyuk, stop teasing me and just you do your thing, and I'll do my thing"

Shin Hyuk deserves a better friend.

its more so now compared to before she is taking her job seriously and wants to work hard not only for her sake but her dad as well. so she doesnt have time to play with him like before. like SH said she changed cause she isnt doing the same things with him anymore because her priorities have changed and having someone like SH constantly in your face when you dont wan tit, can be kinda annoying no matter how good they are, its tiring to say the least.

"But once that was revealed, it was like “shoo, Shin Hyuk, stop teasing me and just you do your thing, and I’ll do my thing”"

Because that's how he is like 95% of the time? Most of their interactions are of him teasing her, pestering her, playing with her, joking around. I know they started their friendship like Oppa-Dongsaeng, but it's more like Noona-Dongsaeng. "Noona~, let's go eat udon." "Noona~, buy me lunch." Forcing her hand up for projects/to be SJ's driver, tricking her with plastic spiders, pouting when she won't give in, etc. Totally baby brother stuff. If he hadn't confessed to liking her, I would never know it. He hardly treats her like a woman he's interested in. I mean, he treats Ha-ri more like that than Hye-jin; he's more serious with Ha-ri, more tender, and they have more equal (?) interactions.

I don't see how Hye-jin is wrong for calling him out? Which he enjoys too, he obviously loves the playful bickering.

Thank you! I love Shin Hyuk as a character and would love him as a friend (mainly outside of work and IN DOSES) but as a boyfriend for Hye Jin, I just don't see it and it's not because she's not into him. They come across so much as having a playful/teasing brother-sister relationship and nothing else. I was actually sort of bummed when he developed a crush on her so quickly because it was more fun watching them develop a platonic friendship.

He'd make a good boyfriend for someone but I don't think it's Hye Jin...I love me some Shin Hyuk/Siwon and he's an awesome friend and person but I just don't really ship him with Hye Jin.

Here's the thing. I don't it was that she was annoyed with him. It's more the fact that he always seems to want to play and good around when its time for HJ to get serious about her career.

i think some people already commented on the difference in SJ and SH at the top and its makes total sense . personally SH is too pushy and intrusive instead of letting the person make the decision by themselves. he put her on the spot where as SJ gently and subtly encouraged her and left it up to her to decide her own path and choices. i think thats a better method to be frank.SH has only ever shown the flashy and loud side to him, and hasnt allowed HJ to get to know more of him, where as like mentioned at the top SJ and HJ connect on a more deeper and personal level. and she does appreciates him but he himself doesnt take himself seriously. im happy to finally see HJ and SJ falling in love though and cant wait to see more

i feel you! lately HJ has been treating SH like he's bothersome. i don't like it. and SH was the 1st one to push her to write. but she only shows appreciation to SJ. i feel like SH's nature as a jokester makes people take him for granted. but of all people, HJ should at least be the one that understands him since he was the 1st one who ever acknowledge her and befriended her at the office. the way she treats him really irks me big time. but that being said, i can't hate HJ for that. she still has her great quality as a person.

By putting her on the spot. Compare that to how SJ gently motivates her. With regard to her nature, her differing reaction to both of their encouragements fits perfectly.

One more thing... Perhaps I missed it earlier in the series? But why was it that Hye jin couldn't find a job? and became a "loser" ?

She's obviously smart and capable - and this episode shows her talents have been recognized. So what happened exactly?

Also, it wasn't that she couldn't find a job, she obviously could, she was working as a waitress before getting the internship at Most. It was just that she couldn't get the job she wanted most, which is what she described as a job where she had a company badge, a salary-woman.

I'm guessing her looks, her uni background and lack of connections was what blocked her from that in the past. I remember in the first few episodes, she'd comment that she wish she could borrow Ha-Ri's body for interviews. I've read that the job market is very competitive in SK and that looks are taken into account when hiring so I'm guessing it all made sense to native viewers. The way she got the internship was sort of comedic in itself.

True. And remember the reason the got hired by her former boss at Management? He saw that she would be hard working because she didn't care much for her appearance. She proved him right, the other intern was painting her nails at the desk while HJ was out working her ass off.

Thank you for the recaps!

I love how HJ was able to gain confidence and even tried out writing an article for The Most.

I also absolutely adore SH, especially when he said Jackson's freckles was her best feature. He was also a good friend to HR, taking care of her at the hospital and not pressuring her to reveal her secret to SJ and HJ. He even gave her a ride on his motorcycle when she was feeling down.

I'm somewhat dreading the next few episodes since I'm expecting things to become more complicated since SJ is clearly falling for HJ. This would definitely mean more heartache for SH.

I'm also looking forward to how HJ will handle HR's "deception." Aside from loveline between HJ, SJ, HR and SH. The bond between HJ and HR are, to my eyes, one of the critical aspects in She Was Pretty.

I hope HR and HJ will still remain to be close "sisters" when all the secrets are finally revealed.

1) Everyone is all "AWWWWW" at the end of this episode and I'm over her crying "NOOOOOOOO" for Shin-Hyuk. I know he can't win but I at lease wanted him to get there first this time so that Hye-Jin can finally realize that he's serious about her, even if she doesn't feel the same. Especially since, you know Sung-joon is the type to get pissy and blow up every time things don't go his way and I'd hate to think of Hye-jin just accepting that from him for the rest of her life because she thinks he's the only man who will love her.

2) This is the first episode where I was like "Ugh" whenever
Hari came on screen and it's not even because I hate her. I really don't (mainly I don't care about her at all anymore... which is sad because I loved her at the beginning). I'm just tired of the way they have her character vacillating back and forth. I want her to either go all the way to the dark side or to just come clean and be the sweet bestie that we know she can be. We get it, she's conflicted, how many more teary hugs and pitiful "I'm sorries" do we have to sit through? She keeps making up her mind to do one thing or the other and the writers keep giving her excuses to back out. It's over the top ridiculous at this point.

3) I'm going to give the co-workers the benefit of the doubt that their change in attitude is because they realized how invaluable Hye-jin was to the team and not because she's suddenly pretty. Except Seul, we all know she's shallow. Also, "I was paying off my student loans" is weak and I hope that's just an excuse and they give us a real reason for Hye-jin's descent into Hobo Mode. Because, as Reporter Cha (I love her, by the way... I would totally watch a whole show about her character). It's more about interest than cost and Hye-jin clearly lost interest long before those Student Loan payments kicked in.

4) Shin-hyuk is so gonna break my heart. I don't know if I can take it. This is gonna stink for me so bad. Shin-hyk-ah, come to Noona... Noona understands...

5) Even though I want Hari to drop the charade, I really want Hye-jin to be the one to tell Sung-joon. Shin-Hyuk mentioned that Hari is the one with the least to lose in this... but shouldn't the confession come from the one with the most to lose (and, really, Hye-jin's is the bigger lie as well)? If not, she comes off looking like she orchestrated the whole thing (I know she started it, but she's gonna end up being blamed for Hari's lies, too) to pull a long con on Sung-joon and, if I were him, I wouldn't be able to trust her after hearing from a third party that she's been lying to me for weeks on end as I've been pouring my heart out to her.

a real reason for Hye-jin’s descent into Hobo Mode.

I thought it was a combination of

1. low self-esteem, like she thought that after "losing" her earlier pretty looks, she believed that she didn't really deserve to make herself prettier by 'artificial' means like fashion and makeup.

2. in a weird way, acceptance of herself as she was. She genuinely doesn't believe she was pretty as an adult but seems to not let it get her down - she's not bothered by the fact that Ha-ri is considered prettier than her, for instance.

That may be the case but it's all conjecture at this point because they never really let us inside Hye-jin's brain except where Sung-joon is involved. So we have to take her word for it, except she never talks about it.
- Maybe she was legit happy with herself but realized that the world didn't take her seriously so she decided to make a change.
- Maybe she wanted to change her appearance all this time but she didn't want to spend the extra money on it until now.
-Maybe she thought that she was so ugly that there is no hope for her.
-Maybe aliens came and visited her in the middle of the night and told her that if she but on foundation they would blow up the world.

Any of these situations could be true because they've given zero actual backstory on her. We know why everyone else on the show is the way they are (except Shin Hyuk... but it looks like they are being purposely myseterious about his story... or they just forgot about it) except for Hye-jin.

And it's not just the looks, it's her whole demeanor that changed with no explaination. She was confident and high achieving as a kid. What happened? Was she so ashamed when she lost her money and her looks that she stopped putting herself out there? Did she start working part time jobs and not have as much time to focus on school and activities? There's just a lot of questions that make me feel like I don't know this character at all.

wel imagine, being a princes (even a nice, kind one) with people fawning over you because you are pretty and rich.

Then dad loses his money, you have to change schools because dad can no longer afford private schools, people tend to avoid you because there is some belief that "bad luck rubs off" so the people that were once in your own social class start avoiding you, scared that the might end up in bad finances, even if you keep up the friendship, you can no longer afford to go to the same places they go because while for them 200 euro's for a train ticket to london is nothing, to you thats one month of food budget.
While the new people won't accept you as their own...and then all of a sudden, you loose your looks to...

I think she just did what needed to be done and did not pay attention to the things she thought were a waste of time and money for her survival (ie; new clothes , make up and hairdressers) Frugal living becomes a habit after a while, one for which you need rehab :) :) frugal people find it very hard to all of a sudden start spending money again.

Totally reasonable assumption and a totally valid reason to "let oneself go." I just wish they would explain it to us or even hint at it instead of leaving it up to us to guess at her motives. Because everyone is going to come up with their own conclusions at this point.

0

It can't be 2 because she said over and over again in the first episode how she wished to have Hari's face and body. It feels like the writer wanted to have both ways, act like she accepts herself and a second later she would say the contrary. The fact she knew a small change in her appearance would make it easier for her to get a job she wanted so much, made no sense. They really should have explained that.

I actually skipped watching episode 1, so I clearly lost that detail. I agree, it does seem like a major inconsistency but I think @Cocobeans has a more accurate take on Hye-jin in 48.1.2.1 .

tbh i wasnt that bothered by SH coming late or neither i feel bad for him, i mean yeah it sucks for him but he knows there situation at the same time. i do disagree with most of the things you are saying though. also SJ has grown a lot because of HJ, and understands his mistakes and behavior, just like this ep when the workers were making fun of him and the fact he shouldnt bring his personal stuff into his professional sphere. i in my view didnt think he was getting angry cause he wasnt getting his way, it was more to do the carelessness of the workers in their job and the deadline as well as HJ's crazy behavior in the office, not defending his behavior cause he himself knows he harsh and needs to work on that.

I admit, I'm harder on Sung Joon than I should be. He doesn't throw fits because he doesn't get his way... but I maintain that he does not know how to treat people well.

Even the way he dealt with AhReum when she was late. Your car cutting off in the middle of the street is a pretty legit excuse for being late; where she went wrong was in not calling and giving a heads up. As her boss, the correct thing for Sung-joon to do is not to berate her but to correct her. How hard is it to say "If something like that happens, call in and let us know."

He has grown a lot and I give him credit for holding himself to the same standards he holds others to. But he rubbed me the wrong way so much earlier on and he was so hot and cold that I really can't forgive him as easily as Hye-jin can. Sweet Sung-joon is adorable... but that temper and attitude of his. Can't deal with it.
