Odds and Ends: Stars for everyone!
by javabeans
javabeans: It’s been a while since we’ve done an Odds and Ends! Hm, I wonder why… it can’t be because we haven’t been doing anything lately.
girlfriday: We do… stuff! We just have to stop talking to each other in regular life, so that we have things to say in Odds and Ends. Maybe I’ll just stop speaking to you from now on.
javabeans: And this is to be MORE productive? I think there is a flaw in your reasoning.
girlfriday: I never said it was logical.
javabeans: Maybe it’s more that we have been doing so much work on behind-the-scenes stuff that we’ve been too tired to add to our plate. Most nights I go to bed only because I can’t keep my eyes open in front of my computer.
girlfriday: That could be all the YouTube cat videos.
javabeans: AND ALSO WORK. There is quite a lot of it, even if you can’t tell on the front end. We’re working on stuff, we swear!
girlfriday: For instance, you might have noticed the stars at the stop of each recap and wondered how they got there.
javabeans: The star ratings are a new feature we’re trying out, and you can rate drama episodes by leaving a comment, at which point a pop-up window will direct you to vote. You can only vote once per episode, but the good news is, there are a ton of episodes on Dramabeans. Go nuts!
girlfriday: Oh, and just to be clear, it’s a rating for the episode, rather than the recap.
javabeans: Yes, if the recap sucks, you can just tell us in words. The stars are for the TV show itself.
girlfriday: Let us know if there are any bugs or if you have trouble voting (be specific about what browser and OS you’re using, and we’ll try to fix any problems that arise). Hopefully it’ll be a fun new feature that you guys can play around with, because yunno, it’s fun to grade things and give out gold stars.
javabeans: Yes, and hopefully we’ll be able to keep it around for a long while. I’m always sad when a fun feature starts creating problems with the site and needs to be disabled (RIP, pretty thumbs), but we’d like to keep the stars around!
girlfriday: That reminds me, I should go to old recaps of City Hunter and give it all of the stars!
javabeans: Oh, I should go to all the anger-inducing endings and give them bad ratings. Sadly, angrily giving someone one star doesn’t feel quite as satisfying as giving an awesome show five stars. You can’t give a show zero stars because then you just didn’t vote, so one star has to be your message. “Feel the wrath of my one starrrr!”
girlfriday: Ooooo, buuuuurrrn. Way to show that show! *eyeroll*
javabeans: Fine, maybe it’s a lame statement. I’m still going to one-star the hell out of Bad Guy and Big and Mary Stayed Out All Night, though.
girlfriday: Okay, can’t really argue with those.
javabeans: But maybe I’ll be nice and start with the love. I have more of that to give anyway.
girlfriday: Race you to the Healer page!
javabeans: Already beat you to it.

Now this makes more sense. I was arbitrarily clinching on the page to figure out how the star rating worked.

So do you have to comment to be able to rate the recap?

Stars galore for all the Twenty again episodes! And one star-nig the heck out of Bad Guy! That drama ending almost ruined me! I rarely watch dramas live anymore cuz of the awful ending burn. I don't think I've hated an ending more after loving the rest of it. Thankful that my past experience helped me wait for the whole drama reviews to be posted for "Marry Me if You Dare/ Mirae's Choice" because I would've probably flipped tables if I wasted my life on that one! Looking forward to giving out love stars!

Today when posted on the "Running Man" thread I noticed the pop-up "STARS" rating and so I started to fill in 4 stars for this episode. But as soon as I put one, it left. (Now I know, only pick the place holder of the stars you wish to assign. But when I did it this morning it looks like I was "panning" the running man episode. And actually, I jjinja liked it.
Still it's a good idea, now that I know what to do. Thanks for letting us rate the shows.

Oh, and can I rate episodes on all the shows? Seriously, I would have given "Shine or Go Crazy" four stars all the way up until the last hour. That last one gets a ZERO.

Because a certain show decided to cut him away after all his hard work because a scandal resurfaced conveniently and utterly surprising at the right time. And not the same guy needs to go serve the country that hates him with all his heart.

hmmm . .. I like the rating idea but it would be nice to be able to rate without leaving a comment. I just left a comment on an answer me 1997 ep saying "leaving this comment so I can rate" which doesn't seem helpful for the comment section. (Don't worry - I won't do that for others.)

I completely agree. Why not extend it to people not commenting?
Is it simply to increase the number of comments?

@TG it's probably because it makes it harder for it to be abused. It adds one extra step to the process so people who just want to sneakily increase or decrease an episode a million times have more work to do. Also, it encourages conversation, especially for currently airing shows! :)

@Mindy: I agree with TG; I suppose that cookies can take care of tracking votes; and if someone wants to cheat with the vote count, they can just comment "+1" ten times.
I myself tend to watch episodes long after they have aired, so at that point it doesn't seem to make much sense to add a comment when most conversations are over. But I wish I could at least drop by and add my two cents. The average star rating is also a good way to decide whether to give a show a try, without looking through hundreds of individual comments...

Same here. Most of the times I watch the dramas that have already finished because then I know if they are worth watching or not. Maybe like TG I will comment “leaving this comment so I can rate” but add my own opinion about the show.

Ooh, fun! I wonder if this feature works on mobile since I periodically check db throughout the day on my phone. I'll find out later! Anyways, I liked the Thumbs Up feature, too; It's a conveniently way to agree with someone with a simple ??. Was it technical problems that messed up the site or... Nah? Here's to fun and appropriate usage of ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!

If there is a show I want to give half or a quarter a star, the first on my list will be Lie To Me. How I watched that drama till the end, I will never know but never has my laptop come close to harm as much as it did during that time...all at my hands.
Wish there were recaps of A Man Called God on dramabeans because I would give each episode 3 stars only because Song Il-kook went on to father the most adorable triplets ever.
How will we rate Gaksital? Atleast let one of the stars ride a horse/have a mask...
Thanks for explaining the star ratings bit...

so that means we can rate an episode only when we comment? Can't we just read the recap quietly and mark a star, because we don't always have to say about an episode.

Love the rating option and i will give all the awesome shows 5 and waste shows i won't even bother.
LoL i find it funny how people gave stars thinking it was for recaps.i don't have any problems with recap. Except for one of she was pretty recap where you misunderstood that sung joon knows the truth (my Korean sucks but still i was like he never did ,re-watched whole episode ) small problem still half comments were on that so(it got on my nerve)

I got two chances to vote for our current fave SASSY, GO GO. Too bad it was both on one device.
I beat you both to the HEALER threads! Pretty awesome that we're given a new feature to gush over HILLEO. ???
Took a trip down memory lane to Answer 1997, thanks to the many feels from SASSY.

Loving the star ratings!! I'll definitely be dishing them out over the weekend. But I was just wondering over the disparity between the 4 and 5 stars. Should 4 stars come with plot holes so glaring that you have to squint to cover them? I'd like to think that giving an 4 stars is close to 5, just with minor niggles included. And that doesn't necessarily have to do with the plot. Just my two cents. Thank you for the post! Always love a good update on Odds and Ends.

Seriously, I don't know how you girls do it. I tried recapping a while ago and it was really difficult. Now, I have a full-time job and I'm always tired when I get home that I usually just skip dinner, use what little energy I have to watch whatever episode of the drama I'm watching aired this week and hit the haysack. i totally see why you guys hired all those minion writers.
