The Producers: Episode 4

The lovelines really get going today, but this show has them going in every direction—and curiously, the more it becomes uncertain which way they’re meant to go, the more I’m invested in all of them. Or maybe that’s not curious and we a little mystery is sometimes just what we want, rather than knowing from Day 1 where this thing will end up. I have a feeling the show’s going to play with all the different pairings all the way through, and because I see arguments for all of them working, I figure the best thing to do is to just sit back and see how it all unfolds.

EPISODE 4: “Acting that way, unintentionally”

Totally drunk, Seung-chan falls on top of Ye-jin and is out like a light. She manages to wake him back up… and it’s like Seung-chan has flipped a switch because suddenly he’s barking curtly in banmal (with sarcasm! He knows sarcasm!), “Is this Dongtan?” (The neighborhood she said she was moving to.)

He continues in banmal as he pinches her cheeks and asks why she lied. (I’m cringing for Future Seung-chan but it’s so funny, stoppit! No, keep going!) He falls asleep on her again, so she deposits him on the couch wondering how he knew she lived here.

The door beeps, and she opens the door on a drunk Joon-mo who’s trying (and failing) to punch in the correct access code. He sees Seung-chan sprawled out on the couch and rouses him to order him home, and Seung-chan stirs awake enough to mumble at him, “Two-timer.” Omg. He’s your boss!

He takes Joon-mo to task, chiding, “You can’t do that to our Ye-jin!” Joon-mo counters, “Why is she your ‘our Ye-jin’? She’s my ‘our Ye-jin’!”

Hilariously, Seung-chan starts to mumble a defense of Ye-jin that begins, “Our Ye-jin may be old, have a bad personality, and doesn’t repay debts…” Joon-mo hears that as an insult and leaps to her defense with: “Like you said, even if our Ye-jin is old, has a terrible personality, and is a penniless beggar, are you looking down at her for that?!”

In the morning, Seung-chan is back to his meek self, mortified to hear that he’d called Ye-jin a liar and pinched her cheeks last night. Asked how he knew where they lived, Seung-chan explains that he lives nearby and saw them coming home together. Ye-jin realizes that looks bad and tries to clarify the situation, which ends with the explanation, “I know it looks like we’re living together, but really, we’re just living together!”

She launches into a whole monologue about the problems with Korea’s real estate system and how she ended up here for a few months, not living together but “just sharing addresses.”

Seung-chan says he understands, and it cracks me up how important it is to Ye-jin that he actually understand rather than simplifying it in his mind as cohabitation. She whines that he still has the wrong idea, though it hardly makes her feel better when Joon-mo says that they’re just two humans who’d neeeeeever feel anything romantic for each other: “We’re totally Just Friends.”

Ye-jin continues to worry after Seung-chan leaves, wondering if he’d use that information against them somehow, while Joon-mo waves it off.

Meanwhile, Seung-chan runs into his mother and sister in the parking lot, and they find his explanation of sleeping at a sunbae’s apartment suspect when his home is right here. Noona asks Seung-chan for a favor, since her husband’s medical practice is struggling and could use a boost—could he get him a TV appearance on the health variety program Vitamin?

He’s hardly in a position to be pulling strings for family, and tells them he’s on shaky ground. He explains nervously to the docu crew that he’s made two mistakes already and might get fired. Aw, he’s worried about Ye-jin’s three-strikes warning, poor boy.

At the KBS offices, Joon-mo and CP Kim worry about their empty slot—the director is under the impression that they’re going to score either Suzy or Cindy, but they’ve heard no word about Suzy (and Cindy isn’t even a consideration, given Joon-mo’s bad blood with her agency prez). Joon-mo wonders, “Should I beg on my knees?” CP Kim: “You mean you haven’t already?!”

JYP calls, and Joon-mo lights up to hear that he’s consented to giving “the biggest get at JYP,” assuming that’s Suzy. Only to have JYP announce, oh-so-generously, that he’s giving himself. LOL.

Little do they know that at that very moment, Cindy is announcing to CEO Byun that she’ll do 1N2D. (Turns out CEO Byun isn’t her actual mother, as I’d wondered, but she has been “just like your mother” ever since taking Cindy on at thirteen.) The CEO is horrified, but Cindy repeats Seung-chan’s own words about how variety changed images and boosted the careers of top stars in the past. It’s a good enough argument to get CEO Byun to relent to variety—but it can’t be 1N2D. Anything but.

Cindy reminds her that for ten years, she’s done everything asked of her: “So this time, let’s do as I say.”

Cindy’s manager-oppa tries to talk her out of it, since 1N2D is a tough program for people as picky and short-tempered as her. Cindy says she’s a pro who can suck it up for work, and points to her fingerprint-smudged mirror (that she’s totally not even fussing about) as proof of how laid-back she’s being. HA. Oh, this’ll be fun.

Ye-jin spots Seung-chan chatting with his fellow rookie PDs and pulls him aside, wanting to make sure he wasn’t flapping on about her living situation. He assures her that he wasn’t, and that they were only startled because she looked so scary. Wide-eyed, she says she’s not scary at all, while he gulps and tries to excuse himself for lunch.

Instead, Ye-jin takes him to lunch, where she references the plot of Oldboy and how the main character was locked up for fifteen years, eating only dumplings, because he knew a secret. “Eat, eat,” she says, holding a bite up to his mouth. “The dumplings here are delicious.”

He promises to be careful not to accidentally spill anything, and she warns him off SNS and liquor too. If the rumor leaks, she’ll know it was him, and she won’t pay the remaining 700,000 of her debt (taking a bit off for housing him last night). She hands over another installment, and he thanks her profusely, then interviews how receiving money makes him feel so grateful, “Even though it was my money to begin with.”

Seung-chan hesitantly broaches the question of whether his noona Hae-joo knows about the whole “address-sharing arrangement” too, since it feels only right that she does. Ye-jin now understands his comment about two-timing and assures him that the couple is kaput, with brings a huge doofy smile to Seung-chan’s face. Both of them exclaim how great this is, and then Ye-jin asks why exactly he thinks so. He ekes out an explanation about how it’s good not to have a misunderstanding in play, then is alarmed to hear that Hae-joo is on leave, having tired of PD work.

In an interview clip, Hae-joo explains (with a perfectly straight face) how she chose this profession because she thought it would get her wedding emceed and guest-hosted by famous people like Yoo Jae-suk. But she found the only people it put her in contact with were other PDs, so she picked the best one, and then end up like this. Um, boo hoo for you? So now she’s through dating PDs (and, I guess, also being a PD. Priorities!).

Ye-jin giggles to the docu camera that it’s clear Seung-chan liked his noona, and how no matter how hard he tries not to let it show, it’s not something you can hide. Which is doubly funny since she’s pretty much talking about herself, too, unintentionally.

Ye-jin receives her summons from the standards commission for Cindy’s wardrobe rebellion. She calls in Cindy’s manager and complains about CEO Byun clearly avoiding her because she’s afraid of getting in a tangle with her, only to be told that the CEO doesn’t even know about the incident. So she comes out even more strongly, saying that Cindy should sit this week’s show out, to the shock of both the manager and her staff.

Her team warns that Music Bank will be the bigger loser if No. 1 is kept off the show, and she assures them that Cindy’s management will scramble a bit and come crawling back. She insists she’s not doing this just for an apology, saying that a PD’s most important skill isn’t editing or connections or ratings, but follow-through.

They surreptitiously watch Cindy’s manager frantically making calls, assured of victory. And then he just… leaves. Uh, this can’t be good.

CEO Byun arrives at the KBS building to meet with the director and CP Kim, announcing to their shock that Cindy will do 1N2D after all. She has conditions written into the contract for what Cindy will and won’t do, and anyone who’s watched 1N2D will know how preposterous it is to basically contradict the whole purpose of the show. No spontaneous games, no dunking in water, no shooting post-midnight, veto power on footage usage? What is this, America?

Joon-mo balks at the conditions, and the executives play mediator between him and Byun CEO, getting her to concede on a few points. The back-and-forth is hilariously petty, with Cindy agreeing to dunking in water only up to the ankles (CP Kim: “I’ll try to let them agree on mid-thigh”) and eating stew but not soup.

The 1N2D team pumps Seung-chan for tips on how he got Cindy to agree. His explanation: “I just told her, ‘It would be nice if you did 1N2D.'” The women laugh that it was his face that did it, and that sending the other PD would have backfired on them for sure. He bashfully says that isn’t it, but totally lights up to be called good-looking. He even adopts a few cool poses for kicks, checking himself out in the mirror.

Then Cindy calls him out to meet her, and he makes his way to her van in the parking lot, peering in through the dark glass when she doesn’t answer right away.

Cindy butters him up by telling him that she’s doing the program because of him. She gets him to promise he’ll treat her well, then prods for details on how he’ll do that, saying “Since I’m doing the program because of you, you have to think only of me. Completely on my side. Got it? I’ll only be looking at you while we film.”

Then she meets with Joon-mo and gives him the same flirty speech about how he has to help her. But Joon-mo tells her if she doesn’t know what to do, do nothing. That’s what “real variety” is: “Don’t try to do anything. All you have to do is be there as yourself.” She mulls over those words: “Just as I am…”

Ye-jin waits all day for a call from Cindy’s reps groveling to be let back on Music Bank, but it never comes, and she snaps at her staff that it’s the other side who’s feeling nervous. She, Joon-mo, and Seung-chan meet in front of their building on their way home, and Joon-mo takes a call with his mother as she chats with Seung-chan. But she’s listening more to Joon-mo’s call, and it’s obvious even to Seung-chan that she likes Joon-mo. He uses the same words she’d used about him, that she’s trying not to let it show.

He carries a delivery box up for Ye-jin, and she asks if he likes Hae-joo and whether he’s confessed. Joon-mo joins them a moment later and grumbles about Seung-chan’s constant presence and Ye-jin using him for errands. Seung-chan actually stands up for Ye-jin and her injured wrist, which Joon-mo scoffs at as minor, though he feels bad enough to check on her later about it.

Joon-mo’s seems to be feeling some pangs of jealousy and warns her about Seung-chan always being around. When she points out that he’s always around, he says he’s not a man to her, which sinks her spirits.

But in the morning, he makes her smile by setting out a breakfast for her, twisting off all the caps because of her injury.

At the station, the 1N2D team gets busy planning their first show with the new cast, using Seung-chan as the guinea pig for all the game challenges. Ha, having seen all the games play out in the show itself, it’s funny watching the crew simulate the games beforehand to work out the kinks. (Although the kinks are often the best part.)

Joon-mo interviews using intellectual language about scientific experimentation while his crew beats each other over the head with a plastic mallet in the background. Then a writer breaks chopsticks using his butt and Seung-chan gapes at him in admiration. LOL.

Floor director Joon-bae gives Seung-chan tips as he’s packing for his first one-night, two-day shooting trip. Why pack a toothbrush when you won’t get a chance to eat? A book to read before falling asleep at night is unnecessary, because that assumes that you’ll be getting any sleep. Instead, Joon-bae gives him the list of essentials: chocolate, cup ramyun, and random game materials.

Ye-jin shows up to add her two cents, and takes him shopping for everything Joon-mo needs to function. Seung-chan says Joon-mo’s got a great girl-who-is-a-friend in her, and that he’s envious. It makes her feel good and she ruffles his hair, which goes slo-mo for a second from his perspective. More romance afoot?

Cindy’s manager-oppa fields a call from the producers and promises not to tell Cindy what time they’re coming to get her, since “real” is the concept. Cindy says that people only believe what they want, and that she can treat this like a drama where she plays herself like a character. She’s out to change her cold, hard image into something more approachable: “All I have to do is act it like it’s real.”

She wants oppa’s input in finding a pithy nickname to assign to her variety persona. She rejects Smile Angel Cindy “because that’s true—there’s no fun in calling me that!” She suggests the opposite, so he suggests a saint who never gets angry… which makes her bark, “When have I ever gotten angry with you?!”

Early in the morning, the crew huddles outside Cindy’s door, ready to catch her reaction when Seung-chan sprays her with water to wake her up, then offers her an iced coffee that’s actually fish sauce. Inside, Cindy primps and “sleeps” prettily, “waking” with a startled gasp and refusing the coffee, totally killing the fun vibe.

Joon-mo interviews that Cindy’s reaction seemed totally genuine and believable… but it wasn’t funny. Wah wahhhh.

And then, the rest of the 1N2D idol cast makes their appearance, with cameos from Sandara Park of 2NE1, Kim Min-jae (Persevere, Gu Hae-ra), Kim Ji-soo, Minwoo of Boyfriend, and Kang Seung-yoon (from Superstar K 2 and the group Winner).

Shooting begins, and the two other girls look sidelong at Cindy. Ji-soo’s the rookie so she thinks she’ll benefit from being near Cindy, but hilariously, Dara is the insecure colleague who’s worried they’ll be overshadowed by Cindy. She instructs Ji-soo not to react to Cindy in any way, glaring at anyone who calls her unni or noona (it highlights how much older she is, ha), and tries to form an alliance with Seung-yoon.

Pffft, the whole idol cast is busy strategizing this show off-camera, with Ji-soo and Minwoo also pairing up, while Min-jae tries his luck by flattering the writer.

Shooting begins, and Joon-mo fills the idols in on today’s plans. The guys will pick partners today, and if a pairing fails to happen, those left partnerless will get left behind to make their way with the rookie PD. They’ll have to spend the night at a separate location before joining the basecamp in the morning.

The boys line up behind their preferred partner, and Cindy has to slap on a face when she sees that she’s partnerless. Word gets to CEO Byun, who’s appalled that her top star got left behind, though Cindy takes it in stride, telling her oppa (and herself) that being the straggler gives her a chance to stir sympathy and show her cute side.

Then she takes out her umbrella and twirls it at Seung-chan, who lights up and comes running like the one-track-minded doof he is. She says that it’s more surprising for her to have chemistry with a PD rather than a celebrity. Oppa points out that this only works when the PD likes her back, and she scoffs that she can make anybody on the show fall for her if she tried. Seung-chan? “He’s easy.”

The car ride with Seung-chan tests her patience, as it turns out he doesn’t know any of her songs or her dramas. He just promises earnestly to look out for them, and she interviews with a bright smile that it’s totally not upsetting, it’s just a reminder for her to work harder and not get arrogant. We see the cracks in her sunny facade as she forces a laugh, then asks, “Are we there yet?”

The rest of the cast and crew have set up at the basecamp, and the producers tense when CEO Byun comes charging up to the filming site. Joon-mo braces for the confrontation, only to have her storm right by on her way to the idol table.

She asks why the boys didn’t choose Cindy: “Are you playing games? Who’s your agency?” She assumes that Yang Hyun-seok (head of YG) instructed his idols to band together, and orders Joon-mo to edit out all the footage of Cindy being left behind and to reshoot.

Cindy, Seung-chan, and their lone cameraman trek through the woods with three kilometers left to go. She suggests a game to liven things up, with the loser carrying the winner’s bags, and then loses promptly. He feels bad and offers to take his stuff, but she’s been trapped by her own deal and insists it’s okay.

Then she trips and he catches her, and the moment winds down in slow motion as she recovers her breath. He points out her untied shoelace and bends down to tie it for her, and the camera’s on hand to witness her reaction.

Joon-mo’s mother asks Ye-jin for information about her son, suspecting that Joon-mo’s got a girlfriend he’s hiding from the family, which suggests that she’s not quite acceptable. He’s always telling her not to come by his place, and his door passcode recently changed. She asks Ye-jin to set Joon-mo up with a nice woman—someone younger, in her twenties.

Ye-jin’s little brother gets riled up in his noona’s defense (aw), complaining that ajumma got her all upset, and that she should marry Joon-mo to get their old house back as revenge. He stirs her hopes with the comment that a guy keeping a woman close by, even just as friends, could indicate ulterior motives—because if he was absolutely uninterested, he wouldn’t be friends with her. She considers this.

Later that night, Ye-jin tucks away the milk bottle cap she’d saved from breakfast. Joon-mo films his show at basecamp, with the idols playing games and having fun. And in the forest, Seung-chan and Cindy are still wandering, puzzling over a map in the dark.

A glance at CP Kim’s manual gives us another lesson for Chapter 4, about Understanding Real Variety: “Sometimes the setup becomes poison.”

Cindy urges Seung-chan to call for help, just as the VJ pauses to change batteries in his camera. Immediately her on-camera persona drops and she complains about the day, refusing to let him take the bags because it’ll just make her look worse. To make matters worse, it starts to rain. Her head drops and she heaves a sigh.

Seung-chan steps forward and shields her head with his hand, as time slows down again. He draws the umbrella from her pack and opens it, as Cindy looks up at him with wide eyes.

EPILOGUE

We’re back in Cindy’s van, seeing things from her point of view as she catches a glimpse of Seung-chan in her mirror reflection. Smiling to herself, she watches as he knocks on the car door, pressing his face close to the glass when she doesn’t answer. Then she opens up to ask, “Are you looking for me?”

COMMENTS

Unclear lovelines are sometimes a recipe for frustration, but I’m really enjoying the way The Producers is handling them, because they all feel plausible, given a little nudge in the right direction. I’m sure we’ll have our favorites in due time (or already), but I like that I can see things unfolding in more than one way, and it wouldn’t kill me (at least, not yet) if my favorite pairing didn’t pan out.

There’s been some behind-the-scenes talk of the drama not quite registering its quirkier format with the mainstream viewership (although ratings are doing just fine, with this episode logging a high at 11.0%) and shifting more toward the rom-com drama style, with drama PD Pyo Min-soo stepping forward and variety CP Seo Soo-min stepping back a bit. It seems the netizen reaction mostly favors this approach, although I’m disappointed because the first week’s mockumentary style and dry humor were what got me excited. On the other hand, now that I’ve seen the “new” direction and still like the show, I feel reassured that it’ll still be an entertaining, funny drama with characters I root for.

It does mean that I’m finding the documentary interview intercuts less relevant than they seemed earlier—I find myself wanting either much more of that, or much less. Okay, maybe I just want more. I like the dissonance they create when what is said is different from what we see—like when Ye-jin laughs at Seung-chan for his transparent feelings when she’s in exactly the same position. The docu clips add that extra comic bite when intercut into a scene, like Hae-joo’s tearful admission of why she doesn’t want to be a PD anymore, told in all earnestness without hearing how absurd she sounds. It makes me want to see the story of the docu crew editor and what he thinks of the narrative he’s cobbling together out of real real footage. And of course, if we got to see that, I’d want to see the PD behind that, proving that really, the truth has a gravitation pull all its own.

I like this idea that the feelings between Joon-mo and Ye-jin are evident to everyone but themselves, and the fact that perennially clueless Seung-chan cottons on readily is practically a siren blaring how obvious it is. I’m not sure whether Joon-mo is willfully ignoring things or if he’s that dense, because we saw signs of his jealousy with Seung-chan leaping to “our Ye-jin’s” defense. Even if he then hastened to insist, multiple times, that they were just friends and completely unromantic.

My hunch at this point is that this is one of our final pairings, though don’t quote me on that. But even if that’s how things end up, I like the idea of them breaking off to explore lovelines with the other two, if only to get a kick in the pants that’ll maybe prompt them to straighten out things in their own relationship. And Ye-jin’s misunderstanding of Seung-chan’s motivations seems like perfect fodder for comedy between them (especially since Seung-chan seems to be speaking a different language half the time and is so unable to read what people really mean behind what they’re saying), but there’s always the chance that it’ll lead to real feelings—we’ve already seen Seung-chan reacting a few times to Ye-jin’s friendly gestures.

That kind of confusion is a perfect motif to carry into this story that’s all about reality-versus-acting, onscreen-versus-offscreen ambiguity. It’s the thing that’ll trip up Cindy, too, after she all but declared she’d try a loveline with the PD as a calculated step to building a certain image. Of course, I doubt she would’ve put herself in this situation in the first place if she weren’t amenable to flirting with the PD, but it’s all the better that she’s getting all confused right from the start. I’m looking forward to the show-within-the-show prompting her to fight both facades at once: her determination to maintain this Nice Cindy persona, and her attempt to direct her romantic inclinations, as though she could control them. Good luck with that? I’ll just be sitting here, with my popcorn.

I agree with most here. Kim Soo-hyun is honestly the heart of this show. His performance is insanely fascinating and engaging that I've grown so attached with Seung Chan in such a short time. It feels like I personally know him and therefore, I feel the need to be protective of his feelings and heart lol.

Not picking ships yet because there is a lot of time before we get a concrete direction of where this is headed. Whichever girl makes Seung Chan happy, I'm all for her :p

THAT ENDING TAG <3 Once again Cindy is most herself when she's alone, when no one can see her, with a boy standing on the other side of a one-way reflecting window, because otherwise she's who she thinks she is (cold, rude) and who she thinks she should be for the cameras (nice, kind). I LOVED the motif of "real" running through the episode. That Cindy doesn't have any idea who the "real" Cindy is. It obvious that to her the "real" Cindy is the cold, rude one, and so she has to "pretend" to be nice, and playact at being the version of herself that she wants the audience to see. But it's equally clear that the "real" Cindy is the girl who joins her own anti-fan cafe, who asks strangers on the internet to deconstruct if umbrella boy is interested in her, who eats fishcakes in secret, who smiles to herself and prolongs the anticipation when the boy she's (totally, completely, utterly, REALLY has not) fallen for is looking for her. I love IU in this because she's essentially playing three roles and doing a damn good job of it- Cindy as she thinks she is, Cindy as she thinks she should be, and Cindy as she is, and it's so easy to see all the three and how they overlap and how difficult 'reality' is for someone like her who's been playing a part so long that she thinks 'reality' is her playing herself as a part. Maybe that's why it seems like IU's acting is different in different scenes because it's contingent on how Cindy's acting, and I think that's wonderful. And I love that as yet it's only with Seung-chan that we've seen Cindy utterly fail at playing a role. I love that she's acting like she has a grand plan, like she has this sorted, and that everything is going exactly how she wants it to, and that she's going to make Seung-chan fall for her, while it couldn't be more clear that she's the one who's already fallen. I love that there's such a disjunct between what she says to people like her manager, and what her non-verbal cues and expressions reveal so obviously to anyone who bothers looking. I can't believe KSH and IU are that adorable together, I'm shipping them so hard. Her looking at him in the mirror reminded me of one of my favorite scenes from 9 Ends Two Outs where the girl looks at the guy through her mirror and she's had a terrible day, but just looking at him makes her smile. And then leaning forward to mirror him pressing his face against the glass, I just love them!

Zoe, I loved the way you analysed Cindy's character!
I totally totally agree!! ♥

I came on this show to watch Cha Tae Hyun and Gong hyo jin but I've been ensnared by this younger pairing....
IU and KSH has such amazing chemistry, even the characters are not IN love (yet), its already so squee-worthy hahaha

I was LOLing at the epilogue when I saw Cindy wiping off the fingerprint mark on her mirror.
And her face of disbelief when SC came up with a 'stone' when she clearly told him she was going for scissors was hilarious.

As if I needed another reason to love my weekends more. SIGH.

I have never liked IU before this. I thought she was just ok, just another singer and although shes good looking i never felt her acting was strong. But this time i just adore her! youre so on point with everything you said. Like ive said so many times before i dont think this time its IU's bad acting its her playing a lifeless character.

Oh, and I have to say, KSH is PHENOMENAL here, by far my most favorite of anything he's done. I loved him in YFAS, but I wasn't super invested in him. But here, every gesture, every nuance, the awkwardness, it's all perfect. I think he's really shown his acting chops by distinguishing the character so distinctly from Sam-dong. The awkward, bashful way he smiles, and his excessive reaction to being praised in any way, his earnestness is just so endearing.

Yes I rewind all of KSH's scenes hahahah ♥♥♥

Now if only I can find a gif of him chewing thoughtfully 3 exact times and swallowing whilst he was digesting what his seniors was explaining to him.... hahahaha

Have you seen him in Covertly, Grandly?

That movie scarred me, but in a good way. ( I think... )

Oh, and this episode also worked so much for me because I have such a huge 'thing' for the moment it becomes obvious that someone's fallen for someone else and you can literally see them go from mildly amused and mildly curious to *heart eyes*. IU managed that so beautifully in the last scene. The last time I felt it so viscerally was in Jae-hun's reaction during Tae-yi's Stupid Cupid performance in What's Up, which is one of my most favorite scenes ever.

Okay I initially did not feel any spark between Cindy and Seungchan in the first 3 episodes but damn that last scene in episode 4 (umbrella scene) totally change my mind. They do have the sparks and chemistry too. And I initially dislike Cindy and IU's bad portrayal but I am starting up to warm up to her. It's probably because she is kind towards our Seungchan though.

I am happy Yejin is also beginning to be kind and mores of towards Seungchan. I initially like her in Ep. 1 and then my liking for her start diminishing in Ep. 2 and 3 but after Ep. 4 I start liking her again. I guess in this episode I can finally feel more for her. And I am starting to understand why she acts in such a manner. I also would have no problem if she and Seungchan end up.

At this rate I don't eepven care if baby Seungchan end up with anyone or not I just want him to be a successful PD that relieves respect and love from his colleague in the end of this drama. I swear if he did not get a happy ending I will forever hate this drama. I may send hate mailes directly at KBS and the writer because our BSH deserves so much.

At this point I am so invested in BSH journey to maturity, growth in social factors and being successful I will flip tables if he don't get a great ending. Love BSC so much. Such an adorable puppy <3

I guess one of the reason I also really like Seungchan is because I have soft spots for characters like him. Naive, innocent, adorable, genuine, real, sincere, and a cute puppy. As a viewer you just want to protect him or something like that. You want him to have a happy ending because you sympathize and connect with such a character. You want to root for him to grow and watch his journey. On top of that KSH is playing him really well that people are all being protective and loving towards BSH.

Your comment sums up my viewpoint as well!
Wasn't really feeling IU's portrayal (or as javabeans said it; "lack of oomph") in Cindy but I definitely started warming up to her and her relationship towards Seung Chan towards the end of ep 4.
However, BSC is def. the most likable character and probably the one viewers are more invested in as well.
I might be in the minority here, but I'm still kinda hoping for Ye Jin and Seung Chan (noona romance :) )

Thank you for the recap! There´s not much to comment on besides the obvious departure from mocumentary style in this ep as javabeans pointed out. I´m missing the edge, but still find myself enjoying the show thoroughly. *off to rewatch*

" i love IU in this because she's essentially playing three roles and doing a damn good job of it- Cindy as she thinks she is, Cindy as she thinks she should be, and Cindy as she is, and it's so easy to see all the three and how they overlap and how difficult 'reality' is for someone like her who's been playing a part so long that she thinks 'reality' is her playing herself as a part. Maybe that's why it seems like IU's acting is different in different scenes because it's contingent on how Cindy's acting, and I think that's wonderful. "

I saw this analysis on twitter about Iu's character cindy and I completely agree with this person's view on character cindy

I'm on a bus right now and oddly it won't let me get to page 2 of the comments so hopefully it will at least post this.

I'm liking this drama a bit more overall, but I'm not that invested in anyone or any couple. I'm just seeing it as a comedy - one with relatively dry humor. My favorite bits are definitely the cameos and meta moments. I still love the Happy Together dream from last episode. It's also nice for the characters to slowly be fleshing out a bit.

I HATE their new style of the grainy face with the blurred out background. If your audience can't figure out when it's an interview that change your direction/editing instead of treating everyone like they're dumb kids and you're going to have to hit them over the head with it. It's cheap, distracting, and pointless.

Tbh quite disappointed bc i really liked the original concept of the office style kinda filming. Now it feels a little out of place but if it improves rating then im fine with It. Anything as long as they dont cut it short. Im just a little saaad bc i want this to be more of slice of life with a littme romcom but the romcom part seems to be taking over.

Im trying not to ship and ugh how i wish they didnt go to this direction of love triangle/square im just gonna say imma be BROKEN if the housemate/umbrella couples arent endgame. Seriously just let a girl dream.

Still loving this and looking forward to new episodes. Hope more cameos will appear. Its a fun treat for variety viewers like me!

So glad Cindy finally got a chance to shine. With this episode i became invested in her character. Looking forward to where the writers are going with her story.

SC was the heart of the show again for me. He is so adorakable. I want nothing but the best for him. Kudos to KSH portrayal!

Four episodes in and I'm kinda meh on the other two main leads. It's a drama rule that the childhood friends will be soul mates. i wish we could get there sooner rather than later. But I really wished for once long term male and female friends would just remain friends.

Just caught episode 4, and I can feel myself getting more and more invested into the characters and their relationships by the ep! It was a shaky start, but episode 2-3 sealed it for me.

Personally, I think they made a wise decision to tone down the mockumentary format, cos whilst it makes for a more unique and realistic form of entertainment, it wouldn't be suited to everybody's palette. The pacing, for instance, is still rather slow, making it more real time, whereby the focus is kept on one scene for quite at length.

Still, I like how they're experimenting with this type of format - it took me a while to adjust to it, but now that I have, I'm totally enjoying it.

IU is also settling more into her character which makes her a lot more likeable. I still would like to see more zest from her though!! She still sounds a little bored at times. But it's IU, so I'm sure she'll step it up!

The rest are awesome as always, but surprisingly, it's Ra PD that's proving a real favourite with me! I'm loving his interaction with all the cast. It's been a while since I've seen him act in anything, so I'd forgotten just how charming and funny Cha Tae Hyun can be!

Hello, Kdrama community!

I just can't get enough of Producer. I'm sure this new concept surprised everyone at first, but I'm happy people are overcomming the first impression and started warming up to this drama :)

Of course, the possible couple combination between the leads has me thirsty for more XD

I know most viewers are hating on Yj more than any of the other leads (Lol, GHJ really saw this approaching), but I'm still fond of her and tend to pay attention to her good side more than anything. I'm sure that's mainly because of Gong. She always manages to make the characters she portrays likeable to me.

As for possible Yj - Sc pairing, don't worry too much (for those who are worried XD). It's obvious that both of them are warming up to each other, but I don't feel any romantic feelings there. I believe their interactions are more like empathy towards each other, because they are in similar positions with their crushes. I think Yj is becoming softer cause she's realizing Sc is a good guy, but also mainly because she unconsciously feels they stand in the same place lovewise. That's why she encourages Sc to try confessing (something she doesn't feel capable of doing), and treats him like a puppy or a cute child when they're together in the "Awwwww" way. Hilariously, I believe Jm's description about the nature of his relationship with Yj applies more to Yj's relationship with Sc. "We are not "Man" and "Woman", we are "Human" and "Human"" XD

I think this will end up leading to some kind of super close friendship between the two more than romantic feelings, and that might be the trigger for Jm to become more proactive in the game out of jelaousy. Same for Cindy, who's domination plan over her image as a star will end up totally backfiring on her by falling hard for Sc (I don't blame her in the least. He's the cutest thing ever).

As for Jm and Cindy, I don't feel anything there. Maybe nothing will develope at all, and the link between the four lead's love lives will be Sc - Yj.

But what do I know. Producer has proven to be one of the most difficult to predict dramas to me. Every episode I try to make a prediction about the direction of the plot, and every next episode, that prediction is shattered to the ground by the story's evolution so far XD Well, that's this drama's charm, I think.

In any case, I can't wait to see how this developes in the end! My life literally revolves around Friday - Saturday now ;p

i have a feeling this drama might end up leaving all the relationships open ended considering they'd have to develop and wrap up in under 8 episodes...
Currently it's looking like a love line with no mutual feelings yet: CINDY-->BSC-->TYJ-->JM (CTH)
I wouldn't mind the open ended ending because it leaves everyone to ship their own ship (considering that all these characters/actors have such great chemistry) but I need a few more episodes to see if I'm all aboard this IU/Kim Soo Hyun pairing b/c I feel like there hasn't been enough development for me to warm up to CINDY

I'm really not use to mockumentary genre so fell asleep after good ten mins of epi-1 then again epi-2. Epi 3 & 4 are slightly better than first 2 pilot epi. In fact I really have a high hope for this drama since CTH, KSH and of course IU BUT so painful to see CTH as a complete loser, KSH character as dumb rookie (tho he graduated from Seoul Uni?) and his facial expression is same from Secretly, Greatly?? and IU as an annoying idol rather ice princess (omg...wuri IU!!!!) Most of GJH part, I play with my phone (sorry I can't stand noisy woman character).
However...I'll keep on watching !_! cuz I have nothing better to watch!

Please don't take this as a direct affront .... but, 'noisy woman character'? The negative reactions to characters like Tak Ye Jin and Cindy by this drama's viewers, has never ceased to amaze me. When I first saw the two women on-screen I found them really, really enjoyable. They're not as harsh and evil as I've seen many viewers make them out to be, and it's funny how them being ... you know, normal ppl and not sweet, humble little doormats seems to make them nasty, tiring-to-watch bitches. Like, I could sort ofunderstand if they were over-the-top, but neither women are too bad at all.

BSC a dumb rookie?

You got it wrong there.

He is just a nerdie inexperienced rookie, that's all. A nerd is NOT dumb. BSC is a book smart person, that's why he was able to present the graph showing the trend in viewers' taste for variety shows and he was able to convince Cindy to join 1N2days by telling her how previous top stars who became even more popular after appearing in variety shows.

If he is a 'dumb' person, do you think he would be able to come up with such facts?

Yes....I am so happy that everyone is realizing what good acting is....KSH is displaying it. I commented a while back about what was all the fuss about GHY...now there's the difference in acting. Brilliant actors are thinking actors. I can tell how KSH really prepared for his role and really came up with a way to define PD BSH. We don't talk the same nor do we cry the same nor do we run the same...my point exactly sorry but among all 4 GHJ is the worst because she has not defined her character therefore my conclusion is the correct: She acts the same.......

Required fields are marked *

I'd have to disagree about GHJ's acting, I feel like she skillfully expresses the subtle undertones of the affections of her character towards CTH and is still able to communicate to viewers that her character is unaware of her feelings.
This character in this drama might be similar to her last but i definitely do see the distinct differences compared to her past dramas. I'd say the lack of her "defined character" is in part due to the writing of the drama as it leans towards making BSC much more likable.
In terms of the worst acting of the 4, IU (not saying she's bad!) but in comparison definitely is the least natural at it.

Skillfully expressing the subtle undertones of a character towards one person does not define a character. A character should be whole, succinct and relatable...her character here is random and as if she was just put in for the sake of....whatever. One moment she is loud and abrasive...then sad and hopeful. There's no in between....people normally are not like that unless they have bipolar or have some mental health issues. The writing? I would not blame it on the writer because she has always been that way. I guess blame some viewers, who tolerate mediocrity and continue to praise when there is nothing to praise.

It is correct since it is based on a pattern of behavior that can be seen measured and quantified. I looked back at all her acting and she never delineates her character. She is the more senior and she should have figured that out by now. Therefore she is over-rated.

i don't know how you can put any so ji sub word into some real fact. of course he will choose his co star to promote the drama.. i can say here in producer gong hyo jin playing almost the character with jun ji hyun in ywcfts so i think it is not wrong for me to compared their acting skills. until ep 4 i watched producer, i still cannot love tak ye jin yet not like how much i love cheon song yi even the character quite the same. they both are sassy and selfish but the way both jjh and ghj give different feel. i immediately feel in love with csy but for tyj, she got my nerve... i think that mostly because of aura jjh emitted..

GHJ has defined her character - one that is full of bluster hiding her insecurities and isn't quite sure of her feelings towards Joon-mo - and GHJ is doing a great job w/ that.

As for KSH, this is by far his best job acting - bringing a subtlety (with his facial expressions) that was missing in his earlier performances.

But at the same time, he has also had the easiest job of "defining" a character (not that defining a character is emblematic of good acting) since Seung-chan is the most eclectic character out of the 4 leads (KSH has the "Rainman" role).

IU's character is clearly "defined" as being bored, self-centered, a prima-donna, but that doesn't mean that IU has done a particularly good job w/ her character at this point (her acting thus far has been a bit one note).

Joon-mo and Ye-jin are more 3-dimensional ("normal") characters which is why they are harder to pin down, b/c real people usually have many sides of themselves and are quite complex.

Seung-chan, while being book smart, is almost an idiot when it comes to relating to people or in certain instances, common sense (such as "erasing" the video tapes).

While it's difficult to play such a type of character w/o turning him into a caricature, it's also a lot easier to "define" such a character.

Now....everyone is now seeing what brilliant acting is....that is one displayed by KSH... A while back I made a comment about what the heck was all the fuss about GHJ' acting and I hope people realize that she is indeed over-rated. She is one of the senior stars here and her acting is the same....no new nuances nothing to delineate her character from the rest of the characters she played. Look at KSH, he had to change the way he runs...because everyone runs differently.... IU tackled her role differently as well... Some top stars can feel exhausted and sleepy all the time because they are always catching sleep and she needed that to transition her character once she gets entangled with KSH. I propose that GHJ is the WEAK link here as she has not brought anything new to the table. And CHT is amazing..he can make you laugh just by looking at him without delivering a single line and even with just a miniscule movement of hid head...I get it and it is perfection!!!!

While KSH is doing a very good job here, he hardly showed "nuance" in his other roles (YFAS, "The Thieves", TMTETS where he was out-acted by his younger counterpart).

And I don't know what you're watching, but GHJ shows a lot of subtlety in her character's emotions.

I think it needs a bit less skill creating totally different character than acting differently a well known character or similar character former roles. Pay attention to how she looks when she lost confidence in seconds and then turn back to be mean. Sigh. I guess they have to back-pedal on their original idea to adapt to the Korean palette. This nation just isn't ready to see anything outside of their drama-comfort-zone. It's a shame because I enjoyed the first two episode, then it took a turn with the editing for the worse. I can see why this is worth only 12 episodes. With not much plot other than seeing the inner workings of a production place and obvious romance lines, there's not much else to tell. But the format was what made it work for me. And now it's abandoned and kind of half-assed imo.

I know that there are some slight blurs between the romantic pairings, but it's still pretty obvious at this point. That went sour for me real fast. Thanks for ruining everything that tries to be innovative without giving it a chance, netizens.

I was fine either way, but my whole problem w/ the whole mocku-drama part were the characters, esp. Seung-chan, dishing out all his personal info. which doesn't realistic for what was supposed to be a documentation of the rookie PDs at work.

Think in its shortened form, it works for what the PD is trying to get out of it (a way for the characters to talk out their feelings, even if it isn't always what they are actually feeling - "Discovery of Romance" used the same tool, but seemed more set in reality there since in that case, was a documentary on romance).

As for the "plot" - when it comes to romcoms, the plot should be the development of the relationships (everything else is just "background").

And this has done a better job than most - making the background story a lot more plausible (basically the rebooting of a TV show).

Have enjoyed the show since Ep 1. They should have stuck to the mockumentary style - "intelligent" humor!

Wow - this show progress quite fast - guess they need to as they only have about 10 or 12 episodes! and now the lovelines are of to a good start!

Both couples are cute!

But my favorite is CEO Byun (aka Byun-pire!!) - cindy's agency CEO. The character really crack me up! I have to break out my calculator everything she comes into view as I know she will be talking $$$$! But behind that business woman facade beats a heart that is somewhat tender to her 'kids' like IU - glad to see her harassed the YG stars for ganging up on her 'baby' Cindy!

Mama-bear to the rescue!

Fighting "Produce-sa'! Wishing for Friday to come soon!

1. hmm. somehow episodes 3 and 4 were less entertaining than the first two. still good, still loving it, but laughing a bit less. perhaps it's due to the shifting away from the mockumentary style, like some have noted? i'm not sure why so many people (even domestic audiences) apparently found the format confusing, because i thought it was clear as day. i wish they hadn't :(

2. it's really difficult to watch IU. the more she has to do (and she had the most to do in this episode than any other episode so far), the worse she is to watch. the cindy character is actually really great (though not terribly novel), but IU is just SO bad. not only is a good character seriously wasted, but IU is single-handedly ruining an otherwise great show. it's really incredibly frustrating.

3. i would love to see seung-chan develop a crush on ye-jin. right now, she has the upper hand over him (despite owing him money), but i'd love to see their dynamic change should he start crushing on her.

4. kim soo-hyun is pure love. i just love how he's willing to let himself go for comedy. cha and gong are awesome too, but kim soo-hyun is especially endearing.

To each their own, but I don't understand how Producer's episodes could be anything but hugely enjoyable in their own right. The Mockumentary, 'slow' (as some call it - I thought it was perfect tbh, I love the pace of this show) style of the first two episodes were really fun to watch, and I love the cut down on the mockum. style in the last two episodes because it's just as enjoyable and, in my opinion, highly necessary if anything with emotional depth were to be shown. Like, the lovelines.

GAHHHHHH, I'm not that convinced about the leap into Acting skill debates ;0v0. I don't particularily enjoy confrontation, but maybe I could just go on and spout a humble opinion (and then fly away at top speed). Well, whatever. Just don't take this in the wrong way.

Just, you know, noticing a lot of discussions about actors' natural talent or performances (specially GHJ and IU here), and can't help to become skeptical about most of them after some reading. But I came to think that it's pretty much the same case with all celebrities that grab the spotlight and stay there for some time.

(It's in this point that I gotta remind you to be carefree with my comment, since I'm predicting some of you are already preparing a counterattack for what I'm about to say XDDD Lul, and I have not exposed my main idea yet. Hate should float away from social media for a bit).

I've always believed that there's the real side and the imaginary construct side when it comes to hot topics. What I mean is that both, fan bases and antifans can throw the bag way to far and end up not even remembering how everything started.

Top stars who grab the spotlight, most of the times, start with a very down to earth fan base (fans who are garnered out of true performance skills), but the party can get out of hand. Liking the star suddenly becomes a "trend", sorta; and you see the fan groups growing at a fear inducing speed. Hmmmm.... it's like there's a base "like" that has real grounds, but also a good amount of artificial fanatic explosion. Some of the people that like to put actors up in gold pedestals and treat them like the Gods of performance.

The curious thing about this is that the energy jump tends to generate a good amount of antifans too. Erm.... if it were a dialogue it would be something like this:

"Wow, such a massive acceptance. Let's see the performance......... Wait, an acting Goddess? Well, her acting is okay, but..... No, I mean.... What? But.. What do you mean? C'mon! It's not that good anyways....... What did you say?! ................ ARGH, you can't be serious!! She sucks!!! Totally overrated!! >: /" ----> Angry face to make my point clear :p

Soooooo, there ARE antifans born from personal experience with the star, but I would say that a fair amount of them are simply generated by the wave of fanatics coming from the fanbase -----> It's kind of ironic that the fans create most of their enemies, but well, the balance of the universe must be kept, right?

I can bet my future lunches that there are people in both, fan and antifan bases that have never watched a single GHJ or IU show. But, they trust their senses, cause, "you know, those are usually very reliable when judging a celebrity's skill level "---------> People can be so innocent sometimes XD Since when raw feelings are so reliable? 95% of the troubles we get into are caused by misdirected feelings.

Ehem, anyway, don't take this personally. I don't...

Ehem, anyway, don't take this personally. I don't really go around pointing who's this and who's that (Witch hunt is not a sport that we all practice regularly). If your opinions have base or not, that's up to personal analisys, me thinks. Just remember to be as critical as possible and not fall in the huge HUGE hurricane of Star approval war (by far the most vicious in the internet, according to my humble opinion) without having a clear idea of your bases.

Or, ignore me completely ------> It's not something terribly relevant for the current status of issues anyway XD

I for one am enjoying the new format, tho the interview portions w the blurry edges are off=putting. I hope they go back to the original way how those were done. It felt more real. For me, the first 2 eps were ok but yes, they bored me. There were times when I contemplated dropping this show. BUT ep 3 and 4 have me on board. I'm really enjoying the comedy. And IU's acting in ep 4 was a step up from previous eps. I was hoping that they would give her character more screen time bc she felt really minor compared to everyone else. One of the things I'm noticing with Producer is its difficulty ensuring that each actor gets adequate screen time. Still, im starting to like Joon Mo and Ye Jin more since ep 3 and 4. Kim Soo Hyun is still doing a fantastic job. If the show keeps it up I'll be here for the long run.
