Moon Geun-young offered lead in Chaebol’s Daughter

Moon Geun-young is eyeing a return to dramaland, and the project on the table is the SBS series Chaebol’s Daughter, which recently announced the possibility of Park Seo-joon (Kill Me Heal Me, Witch’s Romance) taking on the lead role in the project. Now this is a pairing I could get behind.

Chaebol’s Daughter comes from the writer-director pair of A Warm Word, which Park was also in, making it a three-way reunion. The drama centers around the youngest daughter of a chaebol family who wants to find a man who loves her for herself, and therefore hides her identity, working part-time at a food market.

So she’s the romantic and idealist, while the leading man is utterly cynical, believing that love is only an emotional tool used by the rich to control those below them. Seeing his dirt-poor parents struggle has turned him scornful against the rich, making for as poetic a pairing as we could expect of dramas and their fondness for opposites-attract love stories. I’m pretty sure love will conquer all in the end, but not without much tears and angst. (Wait a second, isn’t this story just Alice in Cheongdam-dong reversed? Well at least in this case she’d play the other side of the hidden-identity conflict, instead of just repeating herself.)

The plot could go either way for me, particularly as it’s described as a conventional melodrama, but the casting is what would draw me in — if both actors sign on, that is. Both Park Seo-joon and Moon Geun-young’s reps have confirmed receiving offers but haven’t made decisions yet, so the casting isn’t final. Park has been steadily drawing recognition for his roles in recent years, and has a really lovely groundedness and charm — I’m always happy to see more of him. Moon’s dramas in recent years haven’t been the most successful (Goddess of Fire Jung-yi, Alice in Cheongdam-dong, Mary Stayed Out All Night), but she’s one of those actresses who is capable of more than her roles have sometimes asked of her, and I’d love to see her come back with something solid.

Chaebol’s Daughter plans to air in June.

Oh I haven't heard of Moon Geun-young in a while! But happy to know she's planning on a return. I like this pairing a lot even if it really does sound like a reverse Cheongdamdong Alice. I totally chill with clichés, they just have to be done right.

Please please accept this Moonie!! Can't wait to see her in another drama...

Anyway, yes, it reminds me a lot to Alice in Cheongdamdong and Cinderella Sister.. in which both she played cynical roles...

Okay, not to be the odd one out. I like Moonie, matter of fact I loved her in Mary stayed out all night. But i am just finding it hard to picture her with Park Seo joon. I just don't see it.

Neither do I. I was, in fact looking forward to the Han Groo/Park Seo Joon pairing. They'd have looked good together. But we'll wait and see how it goes...

I don't get it. Did Han Groo rejected the role or was it never offered to her?
I was excited about the Shan groo and spark Seo Zion re-pairing too!

She is a good actress so no worries about her acting, but this chaebol based type plot....eh. it was more exciting when I thought it could be Han Groo reuniting with Park Seo Joon :/

Then again, Han Groo is not an accomplished melodrama actress yet, lead role might be a stretch.

I think the show being female-centric is a barrier. Han Groo is a cable female lead, whereas MGY always gets top billing (from what I rmb).

From a producing risk management point of view, your argument is absolutely valid. I was talking more from an "artistic" point of view though. I'm not sure Han Groo is actually ready for that kind of role ...

I'd say she's versatile enough for a melodrama, and way more ready for a lead role than some people who keep getting offered lead roles despite having nothing to offer, artistically or otherwise (and by otherwise I mean popularity).

Though Moon Geun-young is not one of those people, she at least has talent, experience and a fair degree of Korean public recognition on her side.

Han Groo is versatile enough to take on the lead role speaking from an artistic point of view. What she lacks is face value. I hope she chooses her next project well be it first lead or the second. The thing about female second lead is most often they are so stereotypical and predictable that I fear her talent will go to waste hence really don't want her taking it up. Moon Geun Young and Perk Seo Joon aren both excellent. I am 100% on board if they decide to join this drama.

Well, I'm not sold so far on her more subtle acting. She's the hottest actress when it comes to physical or madcap comedy for sure, but melodrama, especially by this writer, is a very different challenge.

Ha Myung-hee loves static dialogue scenes with sparse mimic and almost no body action, which is the opposite of Han Groo's actual expertise (she would kill the "table sweeping" scenes though). A lead role in this drama would put her in very uncomfortable scenes, like, 80% of the time.

Han Groo is fairly new. From what I've seen, I think she is capable of delivering and she can step it up. MND was loud but it also had little moments that gave her ample time to shine. There was this part in episode 1 where Han Groo's character is drunk and goes to find her ex-boyfriend in his restaurant to just get answers. There is a moment where she realizes that it was all a lie and at that moment she just stood there and her eyes spoke volume instead. I was sold to the drama right at that moment. I believe she has both the capability and range as an actor to pull a melodrama. But that would be possible when she is cast in one and has the chance to show her acting . Lets see, like I've said before, I am already in for this drama even without her in it. I just want her to accept the role even if it is of second lead only if its meaty and different. Not the usual kind.

Han Groo was excellent in One Warm Word, and that drama was as melo as it gets and had almost no comedy. She could do a role like this no problem. Unfortunately I don't think a big three network is willing to take her on as a lead yet.

0

@Laica

"One Warm Word" might be melo, but Han Groo's role there was mostly comic relief (with some angry big acting later on and some rather bad crying scenes).

Just look at the clear difference in acting style between the two female leads and Han Groo in that drama. Both leads carried a frozen face through 90% of their scenes and had less mimic action during the whole drama combined than Han Groo in a single scene.

I cant picture them both together. But I loved her in Cinderella sister. I hope she supports a dark make up in this drama. I absolutely love her in smokey makeup.

I never really got on the MGY ship - and yes I've watched pretty much all her dramas but there's something about her voice and expressions that annoy the crap outta me - but I love Park Seo Joon.

Guess it'll be an interesting watch for me. lol

In the last three dramas MGY was in, the writing left a lot to be desired. Does anyone have any feedback about the quality of the writing in A Warm Word?

Pretty high in my opinion. It dealt with very heavy subject matter but never reduced any of its characters to one-note villains, not did we get any of the usual melo hysterics and screaming.

MGY is definitely a good actress. What she suffers from, others do too, and it's poor decision making, because the dramas she chose lately...haha

I'm hoping if she takes this on, it turns out to be good. I could totally see this as a That Winter, the Wind Blows, take 2 (without the blindness and suicidal ideas).

Sure she's one of the best actresses in Korea(yes because she has a Daesang in pocket, the youngest in the history of korea) and the best of his generation!
The plot sounds like deja vu for me I hope she waives this one lol

she was the first choice for the role of Young-yi in Misaeng, and passed that up, I'd say that's bad luck at choosing dramas all right.

and the mention of That Winter sounds particularly ironic considering she was the lead in the movie version!

Oh wow really? Then it was a really really bad decision. This drama plot doesn't sound great but then again it cannot say much about a drama yet. Fingers crossed for her to sign in and for it to turn out great.

I think it's completely natural for her to pass that up. She's big name enough to headline a big 3 drama. Expecting her to play a supporting female lead to Im Si-wan (on cable too) at that time is ridiculous. I don't think she'll regret it. It catapulted KSR to fame alright, but it doesn't do anything for MGY.

I wish to see her in a chic, fashionably dressed role with an attitude...feel like she could pull that off well... girl next door roles have become too common for her..this plot again is tapping in that zone..hmmm
