Lee Jun-ki signs on to become vampire scholar

If ever there was a perfect example of conflicted feelings, this situation would be it. Since the first announcement that Lee Jun-ki (aka Prince of the Fusion Sageuk, aka Junkiiiiiiiiiiii) was offered the title role of MBC’s new Joseon-era vampire fantasy drama Scholar Who Walks the Night, we’ve been on pins and needles for him to sign on the dotted line. Otherworldly beauty? Check. Noble scholar aura? Check. Badass action skills? Check. It’s a no-brainer, really.

But that was also back when Han Groo was offered the part of the crossdressing heroine who falls for him. She ended up passing on the project, and Jin Se-yeon (Doctor Stranger) is now being courted for the role instead. I’d cry a river of tears and have a rage fit if I hadn’t done that already. I’m sorry for those of you who were holding out hope that it was an April Fool’s joke. It wasn’t, but on the (albeit tiny) bright side, she isn’t confirmed?

On the other hand, Lee Jun-ki has now confirmed that he’ll be headlining the drama, which means that I’m ecstatic about him playing the vampire scholar, but torn about him having picked up the drama at all, if I’m going to be sad about what could have been.

Oh well, I guess I’ll just have to get over it. Though if anyone knows how to snap someone out of a catatonic state, it’d be helpful — javabeans has been unresponsive since the news hit.

Scholar Who Walks the Night plans to follow the Hong sisters drama Warm and Cozy in July.

Was rooting for a pairing with Han Groo/Go Ara. They would have had so much chemistry!

I don't think that will happen again, they are so different and actually I felt they don't tolerate each other in real life. In Healing Camp Joon Gi said they didn't keep any relation after finishing Arang and the magistrate and he also said she was intimidated by his behavior on set...

And about the leading lady, I'd love to see him working with Ha Ji Won or Lee Yoo Bi... so bad Ha Ji Won is already working in another drama.

Yeah, LJK seems like a very funny guy with an open personality, while SMA seems pretty shy and closed-off. Maybe she didn't like him being so straight-forward? I didn't like their chemistry in AatM so for me it's better if they never work together again.

Omg I love Lee Jun Ki but if Jin Se Yeon says yes I'm out of this drama! I can't stand her at all her acting is bad and it's obvious she has some crazy rich sponsor behind her. Her real life personality isn't that attractive to me either since she was friends with Eunjung but still accepted Five Fingers... Backstabbing....

This is strictly my opinion though so don't get upset over this comment if you like her..

I'm out as well if she is cast. I've decided life it too short to watch yet another drama with a lead that can't act. LJK is one of my favorites but I don't think I can bring myself to watch yet another drama with Jin Se Yeon doing the exact same poorly acted character she does in every single drama she is in.

I think it's worth it to give it a shot for the first couple of episodes, but if it's bad I'm out. I have never been able to bring myself to watch a bad drama no matter how much I love an actor/actress. I was super excited for Jung Il Woo to headline a drama, but I could not get through the first two episodes of Night Watchman and had to drop it. So sad.

They are not happy, to put it mildly. Calls of finding out who the sponsor is to praying for Junkiyaaaaa~ drops the drama if she is in it.

In a way this knetizen's penance, totally sucks for us, but they were complaining about Han Groo getting the part, then the offer is taken from her, and now they are likely to have JSY. So it's the dramagods saying, I give you milk and honey and thy pf tittle faith daers complain, now thou will get honey and acid! See if you can swallow that!

But again it sucks so much that even for all my LJK love I'm not sure I will be able to watch if JSY says yes

I so wanted it to be April Fool's. Now all we can hope for is that she doesn't confirm :(

I have almost no hope of this. I think I'll have to pass on this if she does confirm. I like Junki, but I was more interested in this drama because of Han Groo. I would still watch it with another actress, but definitely not with Jin Se Yeon. Nothing against her personally, but she is the worst. She is the Korean Cameron Diaz. They would do just as well to cast a literal piece of wood and have a voice actor dub the lines. That actually might be better.

If JSY knew her place, she would stop acting already. Or enter acting school and work hard to improve her craft.

Aww dang. /conflicted/ I was wondering if he was confirmed or not since the article about Jin Se Yeon.

The role sounds perfect for him. And I'd loved to see LJK in a new (but good) drama. I want to be as excited for the female lead as I am for the male lead. So since JSY is still be courted, I hope someone else that will match well with LJK is confirmed instead. :>

MBC: *evil grins* Don't you curious about the female lead?

Yep same. Regardless of the female lead, I will definitely watch this for Jun Ki, I mean, how can you not see him in his glorious sageuk (and most probably gets to kick some ass).

To be honest, JSY is not exactly good but not that bad as well. I enjoyed Gaksital a lot even with her inside.

I've only seen half of that show but I'm not bothered by her (I think it's the only one I've seem with her) but I also wasn't impressed by her. My focus was pretty much drawn to everything else.

It's just that I love LJK....but I always feel that he often is the lead and the girls are pushed to the back. I really want a strong actress that the writer will be inspired to really counterbalance LJK.

I'm sooo excited for this!! I love Lee Jun Ki in a sageuk (or in any drama)!!!! For the leading lady, I prefer someone other than Jin Se Yeon. But sometimes bad/not-so-good actresses can shine in certain projects. When Park Shin Hye was considering Joseon Gunman, I really didn't want her in it after watching The Heirs. She went on to star in Pinocchio and did a good job. So I will refrain from saying anything now. Who knows, Jin Se Yeon may actually be good in this story.

I want to watch Gaksital now that y'all are offering your worst opinion of Jin Si Yeon. Not as bad as Shin Se Kyung I hope. Now, that's a girl who cannot act even if her life depends on it. I can't watch anything that she's in!! But since Lee Jun Ki I am definitely giving this a try!

She's in the same level although Shin Se-kyung apparently improved in Iron Man. Who knows? Maybe this is Jin Se-yeon's Iron Man, PM&I or Miss Korea? I'm sure most wouldn't want to find out though.

You should try The Girl Who Sees Smells. I have never seen Shin Se Kyung in any other drama, and I'm loving her acting in it. She is doing a great job in the comedic role. She has good chemistry with Yoo Chun, and the drama has got me hooked!

My thing is that Sageuks I think are harder to pull of if you don't have skills. I think you can see actresses/actors improve more when they do modern pieces, but the extra things needed to convincingly play a historical character is too much for someone without a solid acting base.

0

Required fields are marked *

I also think that sageuks are harder to pull off. We shall wait and see how this one works out :)

0

Required fields are marked *

But sageuk actors need to have proper speech.....and JSY's pronunciation is so bad that people have reported not being sure what word she is saying even in modern dramas. And she cannot emote either, she looks like either a robot or constipated.

Ahem! Sorry, don't even know how I managed to do that- picking up where I left off... Sensory Couple because I never thought I would like Shin Se Kyung in ANYthing but she's doing a great job, So suddenly even if it is JSY i'm feeling hopeful that she might not be so bad after all (but even then i'd prefer someone else... or anyone else).

0

The thing about Shin Se-kyung is that she's mostly done super heavy or melodramatic work since her debut. But even while I disliked her in most of everything I'd see her in, I recognized that I actually really did enjoy her comedic moments in High Kick 2 (though those were very few, due to the fact that her character was written to be so humdrum and gloomy for the bulk of the show). I hope she continues to explore lighter fare like Iron Man and Girl Who Sees Smells because I think these sort of projects suit her better, and her acting is more natural as a result.

True. The first I ever saw of Shin Se Kyung was in Tree With Deep Roots, and began disliking her there (which might have been unfair considering her character but I never warmed up to her in other roles either- she seemed so cold) but i've heard about High Kick so often now I may have to take the time to watch. The episode count is a little daunting though.
