Investigative crime thriller Hidden Identity comes to tvN

Dark crime thriller Bad Guys was a pretty solid hit for cable station OCN, but its director, PD Kim Jung-min, is hopping over to tvN for his next project, a drama titled Hidden Identity. Casting’s already begun, with Park Sung-woong (Fatal Encounter, Commitment, She Is Wow, Gaksital, New World) named as one of the leads, which is promising since he’s always awesome. A Chungmuro regular with a tendency to play villains, I always think of him as Hot Ajusshi, since he’s got an intense stare and compelling smolder.

The drama is an investigative police thriller, and invents a new police department (in addition to the existing departments for criminal investigations, special investigations, criminal affairs, and white collar crime) that’ll be the focus of the show. They’ll hunt down criminals and investigate crimes while undercover (hence the title), and members will include a late-twenties male senior police officer, an early-forties male chief superintendent, and a twentysomething female senior officer.

I find this an interesting move, since I would’ve thought PD Kim would stick with OCN (he also directed the 2012 fantasy-thriller Hero), and also since crime thrillers like this are more OCN’s bag than tvN’s. But perhaps tvN feels comfortable having established itself with lighter dramatic and romantic fare, and wants to dip its toe into darker waters?

Apparently Park Sung-woong had been considered for Bad Guys, but because a producer heard a rumor that he didn’t do dramas, they didn’t even get to offer the role. He recently heard this from the director of photography and decided to do Hidden Identity.

Writing is Kang Hyun-sung of Chosun Police 3; Hidden Identity has been scheduled for the Monday-Tuesday tvN timeslot following Let’s Eat 2 (which begins in April), putting its premiere in June.

I love investigative thrillers and I really enjoyed Bad Guys, so this sounds right up my alley. Plus, I'll watch anything with Park Sung-woong. He's so engaging as an actor, with even the smallest roles. Idk about others, but I'd choose ajusshis over the pretty boys any day because they're so much more alluring, and Park Sung-woong is a testament to that. Btw, isn't Kim Jung-min the same PD who did Joseon Gunman and A Princess' Man? We've been getting good news lately, let's hope that continues.

YESSS OH PLEASE YES! MY PRAYERS HAVE BEEN ANSWERED! (Forreal do even wrote about it on the blog.) I don't care what it is, I've need to see him in something he gets to stay alive the whole run and lots more screentime than most of his roles so far. I'm surprised its TVN (hope it's more thrilling than Gapdong) but I trust his director AND I LOVE PARK SUNG-WOONG. I don't care who else they cast. I will be here.

His last drama was "She is Wow" (2013) which was with tvN. He also did a drama special (KBS) called "Strange Cohabitation" which aired later in the same year.

Dang the casting PD must've regretted not sending that offer...

But then again, I luff the Bad Guys gang so much and can't imagine who I would replace in that group. Maybe this is for the better. We got our team Crazy Dogs AND now we get to see Park Sung Woong headline his own thriller in small screen.

I love you too, dramaland.

Bad Guys PD + tvN? Sounds good to me! Although I worried there for a sec when I thought "Hidden Identity" meant the lead cop would be wrestling with multiple identities while trying to solve cases...

Park Sung-woong as an undercover cop? Yes, please!
Hopefully they'll be able to use all his gravitas because his last drama special was horrendous. I must admit, Park Sung-woong isn't quite at the level to make a bland character or story great (very few are at that caliber, anyways), but when placed in the right environment, he flourishes and commands attention.
