Heart to Heart: Episode 16 (Final)

It’s a well-rounded ending for Heart to Heart, and if everyone may not get what they want, they definitely get what they deserve. Hong-do has to decide if she can love Yi-seok without blaming him for his family’s sins, while he can only sit and wait. Patience isn’t the poor man’s strong suit, but if one thing is sure, both of them have changed since meeting each other. For the first time in her life, it’s Hong-do’s turn to determine her own future.

FINAL EPISODE RECAP

Now that the terrible secret is out, Chairman Go spills the whole story to Yi-seok — his father had started the fire with his lighter, and had saved his wife but didn’t know Il-seok was in the shed until it was too late. Yi-seok asks why Young-ji got the blame, and the chairman at least admits that she seemed guilty, as she was holding matches.

Nobody knew the truth until a drunken confession from Dad later, that he was the real culprit. The chairman agrees now that he shouldn’t have let Young-ji keep taking the blame once Dad confessed. He says that if he’d known Dad was going to spend the next twenty-three years being an absent drunken wastrel, he’d have made him stay and take responsibility.

But Yi-seok doesn’t want to hear about his father, and steers the conversation back to Hong-do: Why did the chairman treat her so badly when she came back into their lives? The chairman doesn’t answer, and only says that he should feel sorry for his father and that they’ll reimburse Hong-do for their wrongdoing to her, asking Yi-seok to let it go. Looking disappointed in his grandfather, Yi-seok says he can’t, and leaves.

He goes downstairs to lay into Butler Ahn next, for not coming clean when he showed Yi-seok the picture of himself and Hong-do as children. Butler Ahn at least has the grace to look ashamed for keeping the secret, and doesn’t defend himself.

Yi-seok drives to see Hong-do, replaying in his mind all the hateful things his family said and did to Hong-do, blaming her for Il-seok’s death when they knew the truth all along. He wonders how he’ll possibly tell her what really happened. He tells her the facts of that day, as well as he remembers them, and she admits she remembers lighting the match but that everything else is fuzzy.

Yi-seok gently breaks the news that his father was the one who actually started the fire, and that his grandfather objected to her dating Yi-seok in order to keep the secret. He tries to apologize for his family, but Hong-do stops him, overwhelmed. She asks for time alone to think, and invites Yi-seok to leave.

Meanwhile Dad pleads with his wife for forgiveness, and asks if she was still conscious when he pulled her out of the storage shed. She says she was, and that she’d convinced herself that it really was Hong-do who started the fire. She cries that she’s kept his secret all this time, and asks why he told the truth now, worried that they’ll lose their remaining two children over it.

At least Mom admits to feeling shame and regret over what she did to Hong-do, but Dad is willing to take all the blame. She asks herself over and over, what she’ll do now. Maybe apologize? That would be a start.

Hong-do sits alone talking to a picture of her grandmother, and tells her that it really wasn’t her who started the fire. She feels relieved but also angry, wondering how that family could do that to her.

Yi-seok informs his grandfather that Hong-do knows everything now, including the chairman’s lies. He asks what he should tell her when she asks why he did it, but the chairman just accuses him of being drunk. Yi-seok says that his father may be a coward but at least he feels badly.

The chairman says that he would do the same thing again if given the chance — that was his son, in pain after losing a child, and he wouldn’t force him to admit fault and make him hurt even worse. He does say he felt bad sending Hong-do and her grandmother away that way, but I don’t think it matters that you feel bad if you would still do it again.

Hong-do tosses and turns that night, unable to sleep, and she finally gets up to call Yi-seok. He offers to come over but she refuses, in no mood to see him or anyone else from his family. After a moment, Yi-seok tells her that he started to like her way back when she begged him, red-faced and desperate, to fix her.

Hong-do says that she should have gone to someone else for help, but Yi-seok keeps talking about the time she wanted to ask Doo-soo if he slept well. He says he was jealous even back then, because she was putting all her effort towards someone else.

Hong-do says she misses him, but that if she sees him she’ll only get angry. He tells her to lie down and he’ll talk to her until she sleeps, so she does, and he brings up their first time sleeping together. He tells her it was the first time he was able to sleep through the night in bed with a woman. Hong-do relaxes and listens while Yi-seok talks about nothing, letting his voice lull her to sleep.

Se-ro is waiting for Doo-soo when he arrives at work in the morning, and she tells him what she found out about the fire and how her father started it. She’s ashamed of her family, worried she won’t be able to face Hong-do. She apologizes for bothering him again, saying this is why she needs to leave because she can’t help herself.

Yi-seok’s mom calls Hong-do out for coffee, and tells her that she really did believe she started the fire, apologizing sincerely. Hong-do asks why she hid it once she knew the truth, and Mom says they thought they were protecting Yi-seok. Hong-do looks her right in the eye and calls bullshit, saying that Yi-seok had a hard time because of his mother.

This is hard to hear, but Mom takes it on the chin and says that Hong-do is right. She’s sorry Yi-seok was hurt by all this, and asks Hong-do not to hate him because of his family — she doesn’t want her son to suffer anymore because of her. It makes Hong-do angry that she dares to ask her to take care of Yi-seok after what they did.

Yi-seok tells Dr. Uhm the whole sordid story, admitting that he doesn’t think he can forgive his family for what they did to Hong-do. He worries about how Hong-do will feel towards him now, but Dr. Uhm assures him that she’ll just see him, and not his family. In fact, she thinks Hong-do won’t be able to let go of her resentment unless she’s with him.

Doo-soo asks if Yang liked his new girlfriend right away, jealous that Yang was so sure of himself, but he approaches the subject very analytically. If love is a scale of one to twelve, at what number does it mean you really like her? Oh you sweet dumb doofus, no wonder it took you seven years to realize you liked Hong-do.

Mom asks Se-ro if she hates her, but Se-ro’s silence answers that question quite well. Mom feels bad, but Se-ro tells her she grew up just fine, so not to worry about it. Se-ro says that she knows Mom was pregnant with her when Il-seok died, and thanks her for surviving the fire so she could be born. She tells her mother that she and Yi-seok just want her to let go of Il-seok and be happy living her own life.

Hong-do tries to go about her life, but she eventually snaps and goes to Yi-seok’s apartment. She barges in demanding answers, saying she met his mother and asks if all mothers are like that. Since she never had one, she doesn’t know. Her voice gets louder and angry tears fall, as she cries that they all knew the truth.

Yi-seok stands and takes it with a bowed head, knowing Hong-do has every right to be furious. He stops her when she starts to head out to ask the chairman why he did it, begging her to calm down. Inconsolable, Hong-do finally wails the thing that really hurts — her grandmother lived and died never knowing that Hong-do was innocent.

She cries that it’s not fair, and Yi-seok can only do what he does best… hold her and reassure her that he’s there for her. Hong-do screams that she wants revenge, and he says that if she needs it, she should take it, apologizing that all he can do is say he’s sorry.

Yi-seok’s dad tries to sneak out in the middle of the night, but Butler Ahn stops him. Dad says everyone treats him like a guest anyway, but Butler Ahn says it’s his own fault for not even trying to be a good husband and father. He takes Dad’s suitcase back to his room, telling him that he can leave after he’s cleaned up his mess. (Three cheers for Butler Ahn!)

Back at home, Hong-do wonders to herself how Yi-seok could be so forgiving, even when he thought she really did kill his brother. In the morning she gets dressed and goes to the Go home, ready to confront Chairman Go.

Before Hong-do can say anything, the chairman admits to his wrongdoings without excuse, and vaguely apologizes. She says he sounds insincere, and tells him she’s not sorry anymore, for dressing up as her grandmother and lying to him. She also isn’t sorry for dating Yi-seok when she’s only a poor uneducated girl.

She tells him that she feels sorry for Yi-seok, being a part of this family, and that she’s going to be with Yi-seok from now on. He’s a good person who does his best to protect his entire family, and now she’s going to protect him. She bravely tells the chairman that Yi-seok belongs to her now, and sails out confidently.

That night Hong-do goes to Yi-seok’s apartment, and the poor guy is just a wreck wondering if she’s here to break up with him. She tells him that her grandmother was a fierce woman, and that she thought about what her grandmother would say about all this. She would have said it was a relief that Hong-do was innocent (after the cursing was over, ha).

Nervously, Yi-seok asks if she would have also told him to never show himself in front of her again, and Hong-do nods that yes, she would have. Or, she adds, she would have said that you can’t ignore Fate. So even if their fate is bad, they can’t break up.

Hong-do says that when they broke up, she hated talking to his back. So now she wants to say this to his face, and she plans to say it a lot: “I love you, Go Yi-seok. I love you, Go Yi-seok. I love you, Go Yi-seok.” This time Hong-do reaches to hug Yi-seok first, and kisses him first. She teases him for crying, and he grumbles that she’s just an ugly troublemaker.

In bed later, Hong-do tells Yi-seok that she met with his grandfather. She says she might have been understanding if he’d been honest and admitted that he’d blamed her because he had no other choice. Yi-seok sighs that he’ll never change, and apologizes for all the hardship she’s been through because of him. He offers to pay her back by loving her forever. Cue adorable banter and a sexy tickle fight.

Yi-seok sees Se-ro off to the airport, and she tells him to take care of everyone and not fight. At the station, Doo-soo stares at the message from Se-ro telling him when she’s leaving today, which is less than two hours away… then suddenly gets up and runs out. Run, man, run! Go get your girl!!

Se-ro waits at the airport as long as she can, staring at her own phone, and finally decides Doo-soo isn’t coming. But he’s there, running around the airport looking for her, and they just miss each other a few times. Luckily her plane’s been delayed, and he manages to find her when she stops to do some shopping.

Doo-soo starts right in fussing at Se-ro for not answering her phone, but he calms down and tells her that he doesn’t really know what he’s feeling. He thinks it might be the start of something, but he’s not sure if it’s enough to hold onto her. All he knows is that he wonders what she’s doing and thinking about her all the time, and is curious about nearly everything about her.

Se-ro kicks Doo-soo squarely in the shin: “That means you like someone!” You tell him, girl. She reminds him that he lost Hong-do because he spent too much time thinking, and instructs him to call her and think about her every day. I love how perfect Se-ro is for him, because if ever a man needed a woman to tell him exactly what he should do, it’s Doo-soo.

Se-ro is already sighing that she misses Doo-soo before her plane is even off the ground, but she’s in for another surprise. Her mother takes a seat right next to her — she’s going on a vacation. She’s not even bothered when Se-ro is annoyed, because she’s going to visit a friend, not her daughter.

The chairman calls for Butler Ahn to help him find a book, but Housekeeper Geum-shim answers instead. He tells her to push the ladder so he can look in a different place, but it’s too heavy, and he gripes that she’s not strong enough to do anything. Offense gives her strength, she pushes him all the way across the room and tells him he’d better straighten up, because everyone is gone and he’s just pitiful.

Hong-do sees a sign in the coffee shop window that they’re hiring a part-timer, and stops to talk to the owner (cameo by Daniel Choi). He hires her on the spot, impressed by her red cheeks, because to him they mean she’s fired up.

Hong-do calls Yi-seok to tell him about her new job, admitting that her dream was always to work in a bakery. The owner even offered to help her get into baking school, and her effusive praise of “President Choi” has Yi-seok growling with jealousy.

He goes looking for Dr. Uhm, but she’s on a date… with Butler Ahn. They go for a walk, both of them visibly nervous, and Butler Ahn hilariously runs for his life when Dr. Uhm stops to pet a fluffy little dog. When she’s disappointed that they won’t be compatible because she loves dogs, he insists he’s not scared, he’s just, uh… allergic. Right. Dr. Uhm complains that her shoes are uncomfortable, transparently hoping Ahn will pick her up again — which he does, and runs off with her. So cute.

Doo-soo gets a package at the station from Se-ro, which is filled with framed selcas that she took of the two of them when he was unconscious in the hospital. That’s hilarious. She’d posed him in silly positions with flowers in his hair, and there’s even a picture of her with a sleeping Yang. Doo-soo’s happy grin is just gorgeous.

Yi-seok picks up Hong-do for a date, and in voiceover she asks him what he thinks love is. “Love is Cha Hong-do.” Awww. She says she thinks love is touching something, like when she touched his face and ears in his office — it’s being together. Yi-seok thanks her for being born and for loving him, and she returns the sentiment. They run down the street, happily screaming their love for each other.

Sometime later, Mom is heading off on another trip, and Dad complains that she’s never home because she’s too busy traveling the world. She invites him to go with her, but he’s too busy with the bicycle business. Mom just strides out like a boss, with Dad calling after her that he’ll meet her in Hong Kong later. Ha, he’s totally whipped.

Doo-soo yells into the phone, frantic to find someone who can tell him where Se-ro is at the moment, since she seems to have gone missing. The person on the other line isn’t helpful, but Yang runs in with a drumroll, and Se-ro steps into the hall and gives Doo-soo a salute. He grabs her in a huge hug and tells her he missed her, and her thrilled reaction is pure Se-ro: “Yay!!”

Yi-seok and Hong-do are comfortably domestic at her home, with her baking and him tending her indoor garden. She asks him how he’d like her to address him, and he grins sheepishly before mouthing hopefully, “O-ppa?” Hong-do giggles and shakes her head, too shy to call him Oppa.

Later they stand on a busy street, and Yi-seok reminds Hong-do to hold her head up, walk proudly, and look people in the eye. He takes her hand and leads her down the road, looking so proud to be with this beautiful, confident woman, that he could burst. They walk together, happy and in love.

COMMENTS

Oh, warm fuzzies — I love it. It was a beautiful, simple ending, which feels very true-to-life to me. Rather than try to change Yi-seok’s family, or hold their past actions against them, Hong-do and Yi-seok made the smartest decision they could make — to simply love each other, and let everyone else go hang if they didn’t like it. They didn’t try to change how his family felt about her, or insist they become better people if they wanted Yi-seok and Hong-do to stay in their lives. They just realized that nothing they did could ever make anyone change who didn’t want to change, and that it wasn’t their job to change anyone anyway, and got on with their life together.

Not to say that some of those changes didn’t happen. They just didn’t happen because of anything Yi-seok and Hong-do did. I’m so used to seeing dramas where the lead couple doesn’t end up together until one of them makes a significant personality change, or someone’s family accepts them, or they tell the family to shove it and withdraw their presence in their lives. Yi-seok and Hong-do did none of these things. They loved each other just as they were without even trying to change each other, and just kept on living.

I do like that Mom especially was able to change and improve her life. Out of everyone in the Go family, she was the least at fault, because she truly did believe that Hong-do was responsible for her son’s death. But once she realized she was wrong, she went straight to Hong-do and asked forgiveness — not for herself, but for Yi-seok. She knew that Hong-do could have abandoned him because of his family’s treatment of her and nobody would have blamed her, and she wanted above all for her son to be happy. It was a subtle but powerful moment, when Hong-do asked her in the cafe how she could ask her to stay with Yi-seok, and Mom only bowed her head humbly.

As for the chairman, the less said the better. I wanted so badly to like him, for him to do something to redeem himself, but he held onto his pride until the end. I don’t think he ever had evil intentions, just that he thought that sacrificing someone else for the good of his family was acceptable collateral damage. It was fitting that eventually, he was left alone with nobody to care about him, having nobody to blame for his isolation but himself. Even the previously-smitten housekeeper was so totally done with him.

I think Doo-soo and Se-ro will go down as one of my favorite second-lead couples in my drama-watching career. Anyone who’s read my recaps for this show knows that my feelings about Doo-soo have gone from one extreme to the other, but in the end, I understand why he treated Hong-do the way he did. He wasn’t being purposely abusive, possessive, or controlling, and he didn’t intend to run her life for her. He just didn’t know what to do with a woman he liked, because it had never happened to him before. It’s good that he and Hong-do didn’t end up together, because he would have completely smothered her personality trying to “protect” her.

But Se-ro is perfect for him, because she’s been independent for so long that she doesn’t need a man to protect her or do things for her, and she’s willing to tell Doo-soo exactly what to do in a relationship. Even if she has to spell it out by outlining everything, even how often he should think of her. And once Doo-soo stopped fighting it, and stopped trying to be in charge, I think he was a lot happier letting Se-ro call the shots. If you’re going to do everything wrong, best to just let someone who already knows the ropes show you how it’s done.

But for me, this show was all about Yi-seok and Hong-do. I’ll be honest, there wasn’t much about either one of them that I liked at the beginning of the drama. Hong-do frustrated me with her complete inability to do anything, and Yi-seok was just such an arrogant pompous ass I wanted to smack him. But thanks to the beautiful writing and the masterful performances by Choi Kang-hee and Chun Jung-myung, these two made such a slow and gradual shift in their personalities, you almost didn’t realize it was happening at all. It’s amazing to think back to early episodes, and not even recognize the Hong-do and Yi-seok who were originally introduced to us. They started as people who were hiding who they really were out of fear, and by accepting each other the way they were, they were able to grow into the people they were meant to be. Who could guess that Hong-do had such a wicked sense of humor and that core of steel? And I don’t think anyone knew there was a big squishy insecure huggy-bear hiding behind Yi-seok’s sneer and snarky cynicism.

I could go on forever listing everything that I loved about Heart to Heart, but I’m guessing you all know them already and love them, too. I’ll just say that this show will definitely hold a place of honor in my heart for its wonderful characters, its crazy but realistic family, and its beautiful touching love story. I have a feeling this is a romance I’ll be revisiting many times in the future, and finding new things to love about it for a long time to come.

I watched this episode yesterday, and admittedly, I really enjoyed Hongdo's act of soft revenge against the chairman by claiming ownership of Yisuk- the grandson he emotionally stunted and put through so much hardship because of his cruelty to her. It was also a very nice ending to have seeing both a brand-new Yisuk and Hongdo confidently striding down a busy street with no need to hide who they are anymore. Bravo, everyone! I've already recommended this to a friend and she's now hooked (she still hates Sero, we'll see down the road~)

First off: THANK YOU for the recaps! They were highly appreciated :)

The not so good stuff^^:

Not gonna lie I was pretty disappointed with the last 5 episodes! I hated that childhood connection story!
I could've lived with it if there had been hints earlier on but they basically just dropped that on us out of nowhere and I did not like that. At all!

I don't know how but I would've loved had they done the dead brother story without the connection to Hong Do! I mean it was obvious that Yi Suk had problems from the very beginning because of that incident and he had sessions with doc Uhm (whom I loved btw^^). It would've been possible to take that and somehow let everything come to light.

And while I'm at it... I wish there were more focus on HOW Hong Do overcomes her phobia. You know a bit more than the stuff we saw (which I'm also not sold on bc...Come on it takes more professional treatment than what Yi Suk did.). But okay they were destined for each other so I guess that alone counts as 50% treatment^^ (sorry I just really wish there were more of the psychological stuff!)

That takes me to another issue... I get that K-Dramas in general are not big on medical accuracy but man Yi Suk... I would not want him as my psychiatrist.

The good stuff:

Basically stuff that happened in eps 1-11 and Se Ro!
Se Ro became my absolute favourite in those last eps =) It's a shame she didn't have more screen time bc I thought Sohee was really charming!
I did enjoy Hong Do and Yi Suk together bc they were cute as hell!

It's kinda hard to find more positive stuff right now bc like I said above I was really annoyed with the developments in the last 5 episodes but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the drama!
I did! Especially eps 1-11 (xD) and all the Se Ro stuff!

Thank you for the recap!

I loved, loved, LOVED this drama. For once we have a drama that was consistenly good throughout it's run and the ending was pure gold. Everyone got what they deserved and loose ends were tied neatly and in an emotionally satisfying way.

I do think YS will not abandon grandpa completely and drama did leave that one as a open question, which fits the drama well. Because, at the end, grandpa really is alone now. His relationship with YS is permanently damaged and the rift will not heal even if YS occasionally comes too see him. Only if grandpa manages some day to give up on his pride and sincerely apologize to HD can that relationship be repaired, but it's not likely, I would say. And I do not need that to be satisfied because that is how life is. Some people cannot and will not change and only thing you can do is to accept that and act accordingly - which is exactly what YS and HD do.

I actually liked the ending of mom's story a lot. She seemed finally having been able to let go her dead son and concentrate on living people. It will take a lot of time for her to repair the relationship with her children, but this ending makes me believe that little by little it will happen. And even though yes, hubby is whipped, there was a ray of hope for that relationship, too. She wasn't running away from him - she offered him a chance to be with her. That is a huge thing considering it was his mistake that caused their son's death. And he seemed humble enough to realize this.

Se-ro and Doo-soo are probably my favorite second lead couple, too, and Se-ro is my favorite second lead lady ever. She was AWESOME. At first look she seems silly and superficial, but by god if this girl wasn't more mature than her whole family combined (yes, YS, too). She's amazingly insightful, understanding and kind, but not up to a level of unbelievable. I loved hos she looked after YS and how she immediately accepted HD even though she was a rival for Doo-doo's affections (even if HD didn't want that anymore) and how she extended her worry over YS to HD. That girl has a heart of gold and DS is darn lucky to realize in time how he feels or at least how he almost-feels. :D Se-re really fits him much better than Hong-do and vice versa, I would say. And I just love to imagine double dates or family gatherings with these two couples YS being all grumbling oppa for SR, whining why she's with DS, DS grinning widely and SR just being smart and smiling self as always. Ha.

This was a great drama for me, I enjoyed the journey . It had a quirky start then got better in each episode. I loved the main couple , plus the second lead couple was way cute too. I hadn't liked Se-Ro much in the beginning but I loved her by the end .

A suitable ending of a refreshing show. Thank you very much for all the recaps, LollyPip!
What I love most from the finale is what Yi Seok and Hong Do did is the opposite of noble idiocy. Instead of leaving the love of your life and drown yourself in guilt, Yi Seok stayed by Hong Do's side and promise to make it up for her by loving her for the rest of her live *envious sob*. They look so purrty together i wanna die squeeing from happiness.
Dr. Uhm's advices is the show's voice of wisdom from beginning to end. Everybody in Ko family has stubborn streak a mile wide, and the biggest one is Grampa!
Do Soo and Sero's romance is sweet and doesn't seem to feel forced at all. Am so glad everybody got their happy ending.
Just wondering though, with all the lying and love-switching, what an awkward dinner it will be on Ko's family gathering :D

Thank you for the wonderful recap journey!!

This drama reminds of sipping on hot chocolate during the cold winter months - just the right amount of warmth and goodness with such awesome chemistry with the leads. I think it's one of the few dramas that started strong and ended strong - I was satisfied with the conflict resolution and despite Yi Suk having possibly the most craptastic dramaland family EVER (am I right or am I right?)....Ho Dong's silent revenge turned it alright. Just like he saved her, she's saving him.

May I add - by the end of it, Se Ro turned out to be awesome! This girl goes on my list of best kdrama sister ever (Ri On from KMHM is the best kdrama brother ever too lol)

It was refreshing to watch a drama where they would say how they felt
Glad to see Choi Kang Hee looking more comfortable onscreen. Sometimes she seems awkward. I think it has a lot to do with who her lead guy is and if the actor helps her to feel at ease. Protect the Boss was hilarious, but when you see the behind-the-scenes, she and Ji-sung don't seem comfortable with each other. I think he gave her that vibe.

Anyhow, enjoyed this drama and the actors. Happy ending :)

From what I have seen of Ji-sung in variety shows and such, he seems to be like this no-none sense kind of guy who looks serious all the time. I am getting a square vibe from him.

He might be and i also think he's one of those people who is really goofy and silly around people he connects with. It might not be him being stickup, just that it's hard for him to connect. I'm the same way. I just think about how he is with HJE behind the scenes and his wife in particular.

Anyway I'm happy for CKH, she did a great job in this drama and had a costar she seemed to feel comfortable with.

I loved this show. One thing that was so refreshing... they didn't feel compelled to do a glamor puss makeover on her. That's unusual.

Great ending. Didn't feel rush and felt true.

Yes I couldn't stand YS at the beginning and couldn't stand Jan g as well. But the 2nd lead couple romance was the cutest thing ever, I actually rewatched their scene more than the lead.

Overall, great drama. It did the job. Thank you for the recaps.

Thanks LollyPip for the final recap...I cannot express how much i love this drama...I was never a fan of CJM nor CKH but after H2H, I am loving these 2 actors...the acting was great and the chemistry was even better...Go Yi Seok and Cha Hong Do is definitely in my top 3 fav drama couple...on another note, does anyone know where can I buy the OST? I need at least a keepsake of this drama to cure my withdrawal anxiety...

For me it was enough disappointing. I was happy with the crazy psychiatrist and patient social phobia, though a simple story, it was cute. But I felt in recent episodes that really I did not matter nothing the dead child! and everything went very ugly. YS family transformed a sad family to a horrible family. I do not understand yet. Mom knew all along, but still blamed HD? she wanted to blame, because she did not want to remember? how is that? And how to act grandpa... I do not understand! All right, he let a child take the blame, but let that child adult take the blame again, that no longer justified!! And the father who allowed two children shoulder the responsibility for him, one for allegedly lighting the fire and the other by confining a child, and this was his own son! At a stroke put everything I hate about melodramas: Connecting childhood, family interventions, lies, emotional blackmail and absurd separations. It was not what I started watching or waiting for this show. Something cool, only two ordinary people with problems they helped each other.
Also the chapters do not start where they ended. The latter did not have preview scene.
Although I adored them... The scenes of the adorable couple I do not comforted enough to forget the bad drama. But there is always something good to rescue! I loved when she tells Grandpa: Ko Yi Suk is mine now.

I think the Mom actually did make herself forget who really did it. It was like self hypnosis or something. Maybe she told herself everyday for the past 23 years that Young Ji did it and she saw it wrong. One day, that constant self convincing actually worked. I think that whole scene where she collapse while the Dad was confessing was her finally remembering how it really went down.

Thanks Lollypip for the recap!

Director Lee and Writer Lee are such a lethal combination. They really know how to make a drama with the best OTP chemistry and maximum feels. So many memorable scenes that combined great acting, soundtrack, camerawork and great dialog. I really enjoyed this drama from start to finish (re-watched episodes many many times while anxiously waiting for Friday-Saturday to roll along).

It was enough for me to have YS and HD get such a great love story but they also gave us Do Soo and Se Ro which in hindsight was more satisfying to watch in the latter episodes because most of us were so meh over how Se Ro initially got pushed as Do Soo's "consolation prize". Who knew she would turn into this awesome character. She seamlessly went from annoying brat to adorably perfect using all of 16 episodes. So Hee, you did good!

For me, the final episode was as good as it can get. Everyone's happy ending was very satisfying. Our OTPs rode off into the sunset, the crazy family is finally healing and even Butler Ahn and Detective Yang are getting some action. Now if they can do a Do Soo - Se Ro spin-off drama, that would be awesome! lol

Thanks for the recap! It was warm and lovely and fitting for all. Awesome insight on DS and why SR is perfect for him. I didn't "see" that before.

Really really didn't like the dead son/brother parts - it really really has been done so many times before in Kdrama.

I look forward to more shows from this PD, though. It was paced well, looked great, and the music was perfect.

If you haven't already, you should watch some of the older shows from the same writer/PD team! Coffee Prince is the ultimate, of course, but there's also Triple, which I'm watching now and really enjoying. The PD also directed the Best Theater - Taerung National Village miniseries, which I have heard really really good things about, and hope to watch soon.

for the warm, sweet and honest feeling that you gave to me for the past few months

Thank you so much for recapping! I probably wouldn't have noticed this drama if you hadn't recapped it, so thanks so much :) Aside from the characters, the visuals and the OST were wonderful, there were some especially poignant moments where they chose the perfect songs. I absolutely loved watching Hong Do and Yi Seok fall in love and Sero and Doo soo were such a pleasant surprise!

Just like you, my feelings for Doo-Soo go back and forth every now and turn. The same with Sero, Hong do and Yi Seok.

The characters felt so real and I'm glad the writing and directing managed to keep the audience connected with the characters. There are like onions, revealing a different side of themselves with each peel of events/episodes. I couldn't notice the changes in their personality at all but was shocked to actually recalled then being so different in the beginning of the drama. I guess, their personality didn't change. It is just that they have come to embrace their weaknesses and bring the best out of themselves.

It's a drama which fine details you wouldn't be able to remember clearly but definitely one that leave a strong impression. You'll remember how much you enjoyed the show after a long time has passed even though you might not remember the small details

I think Doo Soo as a policemen phoned somebody he knew from the custom to know whether Se Ro entered the country :--)
They were such a great couple together :--D
And Se Ro was the most mature and functional from the family. Perhaps growing alone in US helped...

Father got a bit too easily out, but I loved that that mother started her life again!

Thanks a lot, LollyPip, for accompanying us on this H2H journey.

PS Forgot to praise the lead actors - great acting and chemistry!

Having Heart to Heart, Healer, and Kill Me, Heal Me airing at the same time was KDrama Heaven!

Although...is it too much to hope that we are done with OTPs having shared childhood traumas for a while?

I LOVED this drama. The characters felt real, and were sensitively painted. I liked and hated, and got madly angry at the family story revelation yet it didn't feel over done, or exaggerated for some reason. And the fact that the family rather than completely changing, just admitted, faced, and got on with their life after the big reveal added to the realness feeling of the ending for me. They were all eaten by the secret, yet the reveal made them able to fonction with their flaws, and their past.

I'm so happy that Lee Yoon-Jung came back to drama land with this piece but I cried so much these past two weeks because of drama land, aigo...

And the soundtrack was absolutely FANTASTIC !!!!!

ThankU for the recap !!!!

I think what surprise me from H2H is Doo Soo. Thou he is not really likeable by most viewets but i grow fond of him!
His interaction with Se Ro is really entertaining. When he finally reveal his feeling in the finale, i was like "aww my big boy finally grown up." :D

So yeah, reading a recap and comments not determined my preference. *ups*

I love, love, love this drama. Have been a fan of CJM since Foxy Lazy. There's something about him that feels very real. Doesn't have a too-young-and-awkward hairstyle. Doesn't overact. Has expressive eyes. Spoke naturally. Perhaps I won't love this drama so much if the leading an is someone else.

I enjoyed the drama as a drama, and not a reflection of real life. Who cares whether what happened was ethical or illogical.

Thanks for the recap.

the whole doctor/client dynamic had me a bit uncomfortable but i understand why the writers used it.

yi sok & hang do is probably 1 of the most realistic romantic couple that i have viewed on k-drama. their intimate scenes were so true to life. just love this couple!

Last year’s Reset was my first introduction to Chun Jung-Myung. Heartless City (aka Cruel City) was the last time I saw Lee Jae-Yoon since I skipped Golden Rainbow. And, my first introduction to Choi Kang-Hee was the 2013 drama that left a bad taste in the mouths of many and is frequently referred to as the drama that shall not be named on this site “7th Grade Civil Servant.” So as you can imagine I was extremely hesitant about starting another drama with her as the lead. I'm so glad that I let go of my reservations and tuned in to give Heart to Heart a chance because I truly enjoyed it a lot.

Ko Yi-Seok & Cha Hong-Do, two lovebirds, you can count on to be emotionally honest with each other and open about their feelings, likes/dislikes irrespective of the situation and circumstances. A rarity in kdramaland to encounter this type of a mature “romantic” relationship. The OTP chemistry, kisses, skinship, and their smiles were amazing, loving, organic/natural, and real. Just the way Ko Yi-Seok would call Cha Hong-Do’s name was special in and of itself.

The development of the relationship between Detective Jang Doo-Soo & Ko Se-Ro seemed natural and sincere too. The rest of the cast and side characters did a great job too.

Lessons Learned: For most of us, our family is the first and most influential bond. A dysfunctional family and/or toxic family members can leave an indelible imprint and jade a person for a lifetime. How does one survive and deal with feelings of obligation, confusion, heartache, and guilt? Recognize and overcome the effects. Adversity can build strength. Even a losing battle can be a steppingstone to a better situation. Don’t let your situation or location determine your destination. Know that one does not have to become a victim of their upbringing or follow in the footsteps of repeating the same destructive habitual patterns of behavior.

One of the best things about H2H was Ko Yi-Seok calling admonishing his family members for not taking ownership of their actions and calling out the injustice of them laying false blame & guilt-tripping Cha Hong-Do and her dead Grandmother for all those years with the undue burden/hardship of assuming responsibility for the arson & murder that occurred.

I will certainly recommend “Heart to Heart” to others and I’ll remember it as a sweet gem of a drama that won over my heart.

I really enjoyed this drama and the recaps. I can't find the ost for this drama. I really love one of the songs and was hoping someone could help me find out who sings it. It was played several times throughout, but the easiest to listen to is at the beginning of episode 9 when Hong Do sees Yi Seok hugging his ex-girlfriend and Do Soo takes her out of the hospital. Does anyone know what song that is? or where to find the ost for this drama?

I'm sorry ... but letting two innocent people take the blame and shoulder the guilt of killing a child requires far more penance than this ...

These people were vile and evil for what they did. They deserve no happy endings ... they've got serious explaining to do when they meet Hong Do's grandmother in the next world.

I love the fact Hong Do told the Chairman basically that she's YiSeok's family now and she'll give him everything he needs. Also love that not all is forgiven. They did her wrong and she acknowledged that, was mad as hell, told them all so, and just went on with her life.

Also, Daniel Choi's smile makes rainbows appear. Proven fact.

So much love for this drama! Even when it took some turns I didn't exactly adore, I never stopped enjoying it- the frank conversations, wonderful dialogues, the amazing growth of some of my new favorite characters. I couldn't ask for more (they even gave me a Daniel Choi cameo!). Chun Jung-myung and Choi Kang-hee truly outdid themselves here. Their performances have gone down in drama history as some of my favorites! I loved PIE before this, from What's Up Fox, and Goodbye, Solo, but this is, hands down, the best role he's been in and the best performance to match. And I cannot imagine anyone playing Hong-do except CKH. The second leads were wonderful, towards the end especially :)

Thank you so much for the wonderful recaps, Lollypip. I always enjoy reading your insights and hope you'll continue to pick up the dramas I adore in the future :)

Thanks for the recaps they were fun to read and also helped me think about the show. I really enjoyed this series and I am surprised because when it first started I didn't expect to. The shocking twist in episode four when the leads actually slept together really injected a lot of life into the show and made it feel a lot more realistic.

I was surprised how much I came to like Se-ro, I think the actress showed some really good ability. Now I'm wondering if she could be the lead in the new adaptation of Bride of the Water God.

I was really surprised to see the cameo by Daniel Choi I wonder if he is friends with somebody in the staff? He certainly looked really good, I don't think of ever seen his hair look so flattering before.

Overall this is just really deliciously fun series and it has left me with a very good impression of all of the main and supporting cast members.

After being told so many times by few of my friends, that this show turned out to be that good, i started to watch it.

I never been a fan of CJM anf CKH so i never start to think to watch the show.

But i'm hooked from the start. I'm glad that i decided to watch this show. Bcs I Love IT!

CKH is the master of quirky character. I cannot help but to love HD too. Her red chicks fits her. The way she always hold the helmet, sold me to think that she's really having anthrophobia. And as the time goes by, she can finally out slowly, it's a relief but also they not making it rush.

So Ae also steal the show. I already liked her character since the beginning. She did really well. The bratz talked straight forward but sure she has the heart. Just loved her.

DS, he's sooooo kind and sad at the same time. He's just too late to realize his feeling. Idk how to describe his character except kind, but i'm glad he ended up with SR. They are cute!

CJM acting was mesmerized me. Me, really like his character in here. Crappy-jerk-witty-innocent yet cute. His gesture towards HD feels real, his gaze everytime he sees HD, like cyclop. The way he touched and cherished HD, even the way he giggles when he realized that he's falling for her, having me moreee falling for him. Geez. I'm in love with him. 어떻게! ?

YS and HD made a great chemistry. I like the easyness of their relationship despite all those conflicts but that what make them feels real.

16 episode is too short. I want to watch them longer. But i'm satisfied enough and still leaving me the warm fuzzies and real feeling.

Forget the flaws, it's a drama anyway and the OST, to die for also.

Thanks for the recaps!

Not my kind of drama though. Doesn't excite me much. I was very much irritated in Hong Do's character, she is so stupid and she's like a damsel in distress that always need to be save. My heart go to Doo soo Jang, he has a heart that a woman needs, he is a kind of kind that will take care of you but a little aure of himself. He needs to be pushed to do things in terms of girls. As the saying goes, you never miss the water until it's gone. I love Yi suk for his assurance skinship and how he shows his bad ass with a good heart. And lastly for his sister, just love with all of your heart's content and it will be yours.. It's a mature kind of drama with a happy ending!
