Cha Tae-hyun to play veteran variety PD to Kim Soo-hyun’s rookie

OH. I like this. I like it a lot. KBS’s new drama Producer isn’t settling for one male lead, because why have one when you can have two? Right on the heels of announcing Kim Soo-hyun’s potential reunion with the writer of You From Another Star in her newest drama, Cha Tae-hyun (Jeon Woo-chi) has signed on to play the veteran variety producer to Kim Soo-hyun’s rookie. The Yoda to his Luke Skywalker. The Moon-ho to his Healer. This is one trend in dramaland that should never die down.

The drama is set in the backstage world of variety shows, and will be helmed by star variety PD Seo Soo-min, of Gag Concert and Yoo Hee-yeol’s Sketchbook. She’s known for having a Midas touch, and is now the CP (chief producer, aka head honcho) of KBS’s Happy Sunday corner, which includes Superman Returns and Season 3 of 1 Night 2 Days. That explains how she got Cha Tae-hyun onboard since he’s on the 1 Night 2 Days cast, while we already know that writer Park Ji-eun (You From Another Star) was responsible for calling Kim Soo-hyun back to dramaland.

Cha Tae-hyun has been cast to play a 10-year veteran PD of variety shows. He’s described as walking in and out of the Korea Communication Standards Commission (the censorship office) like it’s his own house, though for all his experience on a long list of variety shows, he’s still a PD without a marquee program to his name. Cha Tae-hyun is pretty much perfect for this role — he spends his days on variety sets working with these PDs, and I can’t wait to see him making inside jokes, like meta on meta with a side of meta.

If he signs on, Kim Soo-hyun will play a rookie PD in his department. I already love his character description: He was planning to become a prosecutor, but chose to become a variety PD solely for love. Their leading ladies will be a variety PD and a singer, but we’ll have to wait till the roles are cast to know which way the pairings go.

The show still doesn’t have a set air date, though producers are aiming for a Friday-Saturday slot to compete with the prime weekend real estate that tvN and JTBC have cornered. The plan is to start shooting in March and some stories say that it could premiere as soon as April, but others have it premiering later in the year. It’ll require moving their standard weekend shows around to make a Friday-Saturday slot possible, so that’ll be a factor as well. I’m amused that they’re talking about cutting back on dramas one day, then carving out even more slots the next.

Whenever it airs, I’ll certainly be looking forward to this drama. I know showbiz — and particularly dramaland — is a well-worn landscape around here, but as a fan of variety, I’m going to find a little extra joy in the melding of two worlds that I love.

Ive read at koreaboo.com that it is confirmed our baby KSh and CTH that will going to star on kbs entitle Producer.. im so excited.. its worth waiting after one and half year that ksh is reviewing his comebavk drama after MLfs.

Totally! I love him and he's fab!
And it's a nice coincidence that both men worked with Jeon Ji Hyun on two mega hit projects. :)

From the descriptions, I not only appreciate the two men's potential bromantic-mentor relationship but the fact that there will be no love triangles because it seems like they have their own separate love lines.

Cha will have wonderful chemistry with anyone really so I can't wait to see who they cast for him. As for Kim, if its a singer and on KBS, IU sounds like a possibility. A reunion with Suzy would have fans going crazy and quite the possibility since he worked with Jeon again. Or how about Park Shin Hye? If it's a spunky, fun role, I'd love to see her do it. This project already has all the makings of Hallyu, so these are good contenders even if I want my usuals: Kim Ji Won, Park Eun Bin, Lee Yubi, Han Groo, Im Joo Eun, Jung So Min in a leading role, sighs.

is it a joke right? most people, even her fans, know that Yoona cant sing. and Plz, there are so many young talent actresses out there who can both act sing well. Why do we have to cast idols if the roles are singers? should we cast doctors if the roles are physicians? should we cast law enforcement personnel if the roles are police/soldiers...? No more idols plz

I think why idols are used in dramas as compared to say, actual doctors acting in physician roles, is because idols already are in the entertainment industry and they've already made a name for themselves. Sure, they may not be great at acting, but as we all know, the goal for producers is to earn as high as ratings as they can, and idols do tend to earn some viewers regardless of their acting skills since they already have a fan base.

tl dr; Idols are most likely casted because they're already established in the entertainment industry = fan base exists = more viewers = more money for producers

Gong hyo Jin will be nice. Someone mention Jung ryeo won too, and I agree whole heartedly! She and CTH will look good together. As the singer... if they have to cast idol I prefer Jung eun ji rather than yoona. She's from idol group Apink right?

as long as Cha Tae Hyun doesn't get sidelined, this will go on my must-watch list. you don't just cast Cha Tae Hyun & give him a not-so meaty role!!!

let's hope for a Chief Oh - Jang Geu Rae kind of dynamic. Or Moon-ho - Healer. etc. :)

(also, if this means kim soo hyun might go on 2D1N, then i'm a very happy camper indeed)

Honestly, this is so great. Because 1. Cha Tae-hyun back in dramaland in a drama I want to see and 2. Cha Tae-hyun back in dramaland in a drama I want to see!!!!!!! and 3. Kim Soo-hyun playing a character that I'm actually really excited to see him play (I've had this weird lack of excitement for him lately despite liking him in YFAS, but this could revamp my love for him!). And you're right, I'm totally loving this trend!

Omfg i'm so freaking excited for this--- in the midst of monotone kdrama genre and theme this unique one came out with kim soohyun on board. What could be better jzvahsbsjqbjahsua.
And is it impossible to hope suzy playing as the female leas because i'm dying to see ksh and suzy together in a drama again with a good production and a good script and all.

Sounds really fun! It has Misaeng vibe, not that I'm complaining tho. And Cha Tae-Hyun is like the Einstein of comedy in Korea, so I'm really looking forward to it! I just hope the leading ladies are up to par with CTH and KSH (if he confirms, but I think when CTH agrees, KSH will agree). Agree with someone above, GHJ will be perfect as PD (though the strong and independent woman will likely resemble her character in IOIL) and for the singer, please please please don't cast an idol who can't act! Well, there are idols who can act, and there are plenty of actress who can sing. We don't know how the character's gonna be, so I can't think of anyone at the moment.

I wish Jeon Jihyun make a cameo appearance. Maybe as a snooty celeb on their variety show? Which turns out that she got history with both of them.
