New Hong sisters drama in planning, Kang So-ra denies casting rumors

Here’s a mini-update on the new drama in the works by the star writing duo the Hong sisters (Hong Jung-eun, Hong Mi-ran), which was announced last fall as a reteaming of the writers with PD Park Hong-kyun, with whom they worked on their zippy metaphor-laden screwball rom-com Best Love. (His other credits include Queen Seon-deok and New Heart.)

Back then the show was under consideration at MBC, which has now confirmed that the Hongs will be back with a drama this year; their last show for the broadcaster was 2011’s Best Love (after which they did a drama for KBS, Big, and one for SBS, Master’s Sun). They’ve written for all of the Big Three at this point, with three dramas for KBS, four for SBS, and this new show being their third for MBC. The synopsis is not yet out so we don’t know yet what type of show they’re planning; in the absence of plot information, the big question right now is what stars they’ll cast, and the buzzing has already begun.

Speculation started circulating that Kang So-ra (hot off the massive success of Misaeng) was positively considering the lead role, only to be shot down by her management right away, who stated that she has not received an offer and that the show has not released a script yet. The refutation came almost as quickly as the articles popped up, so perhaps they were completely groundless; still, now that the name’s been mentioned, I really wouldn’t mind seeing her headline a Hong sisters drama. Too bad the speculation was quashed so swiftly.

The writing team is such a well-loved brand that I can see how mere talk of a new series could kickstart a rumor frenzy, since they’ve done good things for many of their leads, either by making brand-new stars out of unknowns/lesser-knowns (Lee Jun-ki, Lee Da-hae, Han Ye-seul, Kang Ji-hwan) or giving established ones a new spin on their image (Cha Seung-won, So Ji-sub). They’ve only had one real flop out of nine shows, and even their less-successful dramas (in terms of ratings) have been high-buzz, active-fandom dramas (such as You’re Beautiful), so no doubt the casting process will garner a ton of attention in the coming months.

The new, as-yet-unnamed Hong sisters drama is aiming for a May broadcast.

Awesome, only a few months to wait! I hope we get the synopsis soon. Wasn't there something about them doing a vampire drama, or is that just wishful thinking on my part?

Ha ha, that'd totally be it. I think I just mashed people's comments and the Hong sisters in my head and made myself believe they were making a vampire drama. I'm just gonna keep hoping for that then, lol

Honestly only drama i liked from them was MS and Nine Tailed Fox. Big was a mess, YAB was not my cup of tee and i didn`t even watch Best Love.

So hopefully they go for a dark ,quirky comedy again , i think that`s their strongest point.

I enjoyed the first couple of Hong Sisters' dramas. I feel like they're really good half-way through and then when the angst hits it gets to be too melo. I hope they have in mind how their drama will end since it's the half-way point to the end that their dramas get tiresome.

Can I just rant here for a minute?

A few years ago Hong Sisters were, hands down, my favourite Korean scriptwriters. I still laugh my ass of watching Delighful Girl Choon Hyang and My Girl and Hong Gil Dong will forever stay as one of very few dramas that made me cry like a baby (I am practically a heartless robot). However since 2010 all of their dramas are exactly the same. It feels like they are really bored with their job and just replace one supernatural element with another, but the progression of the plot does not change at all:

1) The main girl is a complete nutcase in the eyes of the main guy and keeps clinging to hero for some ridiculous reason.
2) Somehow, he falls in love first and goes through a major denial stage.
3) After he accepts his feelings and starts pursuing the heroine she plays 'hard to get' for a number of episodes.
4) In the second half of drama, the 'nobel idiocy' element starts to make less and less sense and it all gets unbearably boring towards the end.

Were did the awesomeness of their earlier projects go? Hong Gil Dong was completely out of their comfort zone and yet it had killer ratings, so why did they give up on experimenting with different genres?

Once again, I know it is an unpopular opinion, but here it is. Rant finished.

For what it's worth, the "jerk hero has a change of heart and falls for heroine" trope is in no way exclusive to Hong sisters dramas (or even kdramas), and the early Hong sisters dramas also follow this exact same pattern so I really can't see the issue as an Earlier vs Later dramas thing.

Hong Gil Dong actually did not have killer ratings - they started high but steadily declined in the latter half of the drama (and back in 2008, those wouldn't have been considered great ratings, though of course they would now when everything is in single digits)

0

Required fields are marked *

As I've explained, it's not simply "a jerk falls in love", it's the whole algorithm of action. Too much deja vu.

I went to double-check Hong Gil Dong's ratings and you are right, I thought that show was more popular for some reason.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, I was thinking they're pretty common tropes of all dramas. Plus I think the more Hong Sisters dramas you watch the more you recognise their formula. They write fun dramas, but they'll always be flawed writers. I don't necessarily think their earlier shows are better than their later ones, each drama of theirs' has its own set of problems.

Though I do actually agree with you, Sour Grapes. Your list basically describes Master's Sun and parts of MGIAG perfectly. I couldn't understand the noble idiocy stuff in Master's Sun at all. The leads were talking in circles around each other. I still have no idea why they didn't get together properly until the last 10 minutes of the show. At least the noble idiocy in MGIAG made sense (imo).

I think Big was out of their comfort zone and could have been an interesting deviation from their formula but they completely lost their marbles while writing it and then we got... whatever the hell that was.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

I agree that they were always flawed writers. And yeah, the feeling of repetitivess comes from watching too many of their dramas. I do believe that someone who just randomly picks up, let's say Master's Sun, would enjoy it a lot, but for me it felt very much like recycling old work.
But still, in my opinion their earlier works were a lot funnier and had more..heart? I don't know.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

My problem with Master's Sun wasn't actually the noble idiocy (which ended well before she actually left), it was the pacing of the last few episodes and the insertion of totally random plot points that just came out of nowhere (Chunderella?!).

I got why she had to leave, and the saving grace was that the entire finale episode was about them actively working on getting back together as opposed to saying 'no, we must stay apart!' the way their dramas usually go- the real flaw was the random episode in the middle where the central mystery was already solved but there was still a pile of angst for I'm not sure what purpose. Hong sisters dramas always have this problem of collapsing like souffles at about episode 11 or 12 of a 16 episode count, so the ending stretch of 4 episodes of angst can really mar the fun of the earlier episodes.

But even with that, I found Master's Sun enjoyable and worthwhile, largely on the strength of the leads. And even if Big failed badly, I can certainly see traces of its influence on Master's Sun - for comparison's sake, there's a definite difference between MS and Best Love, though I find it hard to pinpoint besides maybe the feeling that MS isn't quite as frenetic or over-the-top as the pre-Big dramas.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

** please take note that Master's Sun had an extension. That's when Chunhee plot point came out.

Though for me it was already meandering near the end, and Chunhee's storyline was actually a bit interesting and something I wish they'd explored more instead of the other fillers I don't even remember anymore.

0

@mary - I understand that the extension did force their hand to a great degree, especially since it came at pretty much the eleventh hour. I don't blame them for that, but the Chunderella thing did feel like a plot point that they desperately cast around for at the last minute.

I see what you're saying and think it's accurate. But, as they say, there's nothing new under the sun. For any writer.

What you described about the format of Hong Sister's dramas is the basic formula for Austen's Pride and Prejudice too. It's a formula that has satisfied audiences for centuries.

I think it helps if we don't expect their dramas to be inconsistent with their brand image. But - rather - that for a brief span of weeks we'll get to thoroughly enjoy their fun re-imagining of this familiar dramatic form.

(See below about the Austen comparison.)

What strikes me us that most of the comments are about which pairings people want to see in the upcoming show. I think that says something .

It seems that what most people like about Hong Sisters dramas is that they attract good actors. And those actors will have good chemistry as they deliver likable, memorable characters that we want to root for.

It seems most people are willing to look past structural/plot problems because of the strength of the characters. However, if the writers mess with those beloved characters... they better watch out... people will come at them 'loaded for bear.'

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

This. Indeed, they do nail their pairings, but I am one of those picky people who needs to see an actual plot on top of actors chemistry.

0

Jane Austen's characters would be much more relatable, being completely normal people with completely normal flaws, dealing with a really simple desire: to get hitched. The obstacles in the way of her protagonists' getting together are always grounded in reality: social status, money, ego, distance, misunderstanding... I'd say the Hong Sisters insert a lot more of the fantastical into their stories, and a lot more unnecessary, perhaps a little tiresome, angst and noble idiocy into their stories...

And writing-wise, even if I can't read Korean to know how good/bad the Hong Sisters are, I still think they aren't in the same league as Austen.

@Grapes @Bean

Oh no. I wasn't meaning to compare the two qualitatively. I was just saying the romantic storylines follow a similar pattern.

Qualitative comparisons between Kdramas and classics would be quite unfair given the amount of real-time changes Kdrama writers are forced to make to boost ratings.

Woot, woot! I'm definitely looking forward to this!

I remember coming across a Hong Sisters Facebook fan page awhile back and reading news about the plot idea for their next drama. I guess that was totally bogus, then.

I would also love to see Lee Jun-ki reunited with the sisters again and plus, want to see him back in action! Now I don't know about both Kang Sora and Lee Jun-ki, though... Just sayin', either one would be nice.

I would be THRILLED if Kang So-ra got such a high-profile role and it was a hit......girl has been in one of the most successful Korean movies of the last decade and still didn't start getting the kind of leading-lady offers she deserved until post-Misaeng!

Either way, the Hong sisters have many faults in their dramas but they usually do nail the casting of leads with good chemistry so I look forward to this.

(personally, I hope they cast younger leads this time, I LOVED So Ji-sub and Gong Hyo-jin in Master's Sun but there are so many talented young actors who would really benefit from a project like this. Like, say, Kim Ji-won. Or Lee Yubi. And no idols please!)

Does anyone know what part of the year will this drama air? I want to see a quirky romance just like in Master's sun.

Imagine... The hero has a weird problem. His wings fly out (or something like that) at random times. And only way to stop this, is to kiss the leading lady <3 *Swoon*

Hence, multiple kisses throughout the drama. LOL

Not me! These young actors need to do the extraordinary to fully establish their careers.

I'd love to see him in at least one high-rated rom-com before he goes off to army duty. The predictably successful ones don't come around that often.

It'd be a coup for him as an actor, because it could fix his reputation as a hard working and bankable leading man. At that point he'd have held the lead role in four very successful dramas , each in a different genre (Smile-daily, Empress Ki-historical, Healer-action/romance, and Hong Sisters-rom-com).

Many articles today say he received a lot of drama/movie/musical offers so it's not impossible (Healer last episode is February 10) ..I love this idea too but I think I prefer a movie if he can't do both ^^

If not, I would like to see Kim woo-bin as lead of a rom-com drama. Or Joo-won.
Kang sora or Jung so-min as lead actress would be great !

Arg, I hope they release the synopsis soon !!! My favorite Hong sisters dramas were "My girl" and "You are beautiful" :)

I need to get more of my JCW fix after Healer ends. Or I dunno what I'll do with my life aside from anxiously counting the months before he enlists. LOL.

@ Gidget

I agree with you...as much as I would love Ji Chang Wook to take a break because he's been working non stop, he needs to strike while he's hot...which is now...

At the moment, he's on his way up there, and he needs to capitalize on that.

Especially that he might have to enlist at the end of this year or the next.

a Hong sister drama might just be the thing to catapult him up there, and he could rest all he want after that during his MS.

His position will be secured and we'll all be grieving during his 2 years absence and impatiently waiting for his return.

Everyone seems to be mentioning Ji Chang Wook but I actually thought i remember seeing somewhere where he said he's off for army duty once Healer ends. Hmm... hopefully he'll manage to squeeze in one more project before he goes because we'll definitely need as many things to rewatch as possible to make the two years go by faster hehe

He's stated that he plans to leave at the end of 2015 and that he plans to work as hard as he can before that, so I think there's a very good chance that we'll see him in 1 more drama before he goes. At least I hope so!!

I have a good opinion of the Hong sisters even if I never finish their dramas. My vote goes to Jin Yi han and Yoo Inna to make up for that terrible waste of chemistry that was MSH.

The mere mention of Hong Sisters always gets a lot of buzz. I think it would do Kang Sora a world of good if she's cast. I'm not too fond of her if they plan on casting someone better, but I won't complain if they went with her.

I'm more interested in the male leads. Lots of speculations, and I heard a few names being whispered. I wouldn't mind the 87ers though, because they all are enlisting soon. Lee Min-ho would be exciting imo, specially after the dismal Heirs. I'd love him in a real rom-fom. Or Kim Soo-hyun/Jang Geun-suk. Those are exciting names!

I haven't actually ever imagined Kang Sora with any of the leads you mentioned. But I think she will not suit Jang Geun Suk!! She might suit Lee Min Ho or Kim Soo Hyun though.

But I hope this time, Hong Sisters create a badass female lead. The one who isn't always crying and dependant of the hero. I want a strong character just like Cheon Song Yi (My love from the star) or Jang Hye Sung (I hear your voice)

I suggested those names without taking Kang Sora into consideration since I don't think she'll be doing this. The immediate denial means she's probably rejected it, or was never even offered it.

Cheon Song-yi is a whole other level, but I'd love to the HS try and replicate that sass. I think the other pair of HS are completely capable as seen in Hang-ah from K2H, hopefully we'll get something similar here.

I'd prefer it if the Hongs went a little off the beaten track and didn't only look at 20something A-listers/established male leads for this. There's nothing at all fresh or exciting about the idea of them working with Jang Geun-seok or Kim Soo-hyun, it's "same old" at this rate. The only one I'd find halfway interesting is Song Joong-ki, and he won't be out of the army in time for this.

On the other hand, if they were considering Byun Yo-han or Go Kyung-pyo? SIGN ME UP.

(same goes for if Kang Haneul, Im Shi-wan, Sung Joon, or Seo In-gook were considered)

Everyone has different preferences, but I definitely disagree with everything there. I'd love a young A-list actor to be courted after they cast 30 year old guys for the past three of their dramas. Not a relative newbie but an actual A-lister like the ones I mentioned. I don't find them 'same old' but instead fresh and different given the people I've mentioned haven't done actual comedy in a while. Just because they're popular, doesn't mean they don't have something exciting to bring onto a character. Sure new actors need to be given a chance, but there's a reason popular ones are on top. I'm still rooting for LMH, even if KSH is not far behind.

Anyway, I'm more inclined towards giving newer actresses a go. Lots of mentions for Han Groo which, if it happens, would make my year I think.

Kim Soo-hyun's last drama was a now-iconic romcom, in which he was fairly decent but still outclassed by his leading lady. And Lee Min-ho isn't really that good an actor - extremely good-looking and charismatic, yes, but still rather limited, acting-wise.

Like I said, neither of those two needs the breakout a Hong sisters drama would give them, and as for "there’s a reason popular ones are on top", it might be a good time to remember LMH and KSH were once rookie actors too, who got to the top because they lucked into the right project that took a chance by casting a then-rookie actor as lead (especially LMH).

At this point, I'm not sure either of them would bring anything fresh to the table in the kind of roles the Hong sisters tend to write for male leads, so I would much rather see a fresher face in the role.

I hope you realize that opinions differ. You might think that an actor is limited acting-wise while I may think he's good. Acting is not set on stone, therefore, I can easily claim LMH and KSH are very decent actors that convinces me and moves me, while it may not be the same for you. Just like I think LJS brings absolutely zero to the table while others claim he's amazing.

I never claimed they need a 'breakout' drama because LOL, I don't know how much more both can 'breakout'. The writers aren't here to do anyone favours by helping them 'breakout'. They are trying to find actors who can portray a certain character well and considering the previous names they've courted, they may be looking for popularity to boot.

I think everyone here has preferences, as seen in the comments. Some may want relatively less popular, some prefer JCW - which, yes thank you very much, he's fabulous! - and some want A-listers. For all those people, their choices will bring something 'fresh' as seen through their views. Its a clearly objective.

Lastly, yes, KSH was in the iconic YFAS, but if you re-read my comment, I said they haven't done an actual comedy. In YFAS, it was JJH that did the comedy. So, I want KSH to try his hand on something different - and yes, it is different for him. Just as it would be for LMH. As for JGS, I want him in something watchable. If its a HS drama that would bring him back to quality, I'm all for it, as I said before.

0

I understand you're a fan of both Kim Soo-hyun and Lee Min-ho and rather willing to bend the definition of 'comedy' in KSH's case to claim that he hadn't done any in YFAS.

And while we are on the subject of opinions, it's my opinion that "acting is not set in stone" is one of the commonest excuses used by fans of actors who aren't considered 'all that', acting-wise, when faced with people who hold that opinion. You're free to think Lee Min-ho is the greatest and best and would be great in Hong sisters comedy, just as I am free to express that I am completely unenthused by the idea because my opinion of them as actors is that their A list status at this point outweighs their actual acting skills.

0

Yes, I am a fan of both, and no, I'm not 'bending' any definition as you'd like to believe. I said I wanted him to do 'actual comedy' - which YFAS was not in terms of Do Min-joon's character. So nope, no 'bending', just stating facts on how I saw the drama - which, whether you find legitimate or not, doesn't change my opinion.

Also, sure if you say so. You can also believe all you want that I'm using the 'commonest excuse' to somehow defend that LMH isn't 'all that'. Sometimes, when you can't accept opinions that differ from yours, it's wiser to just believe what sails your boat. Lastly, errmm... did I tell you not to express your opinion? I don't remember saying that so I have zero idea where you got that from.

0

I see your definition of comedy is rather....unique, since apparently delivering a lot of (very funny) lines and being in multiple comedic scenarios in a drama explicitly marketed and written as a romcom isn't comedy to you, because he had to keep a straight face and deliver lines deadpan.

And opinions may differ but I'm afraid the definition of comedy isn't really a subjective one, and your apparently limited understanding if it does have me questioning the validity of the "facts" on the basis of which you form those opinions. Sawwrry!

0

Afraid? Don't be. Limited understanding, validity etc etc that you claim - thats describing yourself which you hilariously don't realize. Also everything you just said was your opinion which counts for nothing to me, so saawry right back. Comedic acting doesn't depend on the drama, it depends on the acting. One can be funny in a melodrama when they have funny lines/actions. Just like one can be very deadpan in a comedy because that's what a role calls for.

But really, when people just can't seem to accept things that don't work with their made up theories or can't read comments well enough for that matter, it's better to back off and let them bark till they want. I'd rather be wise and let it go. You can go on if you want.

0

And more to the point, people behave like the famous 87ers are the only 20something actors working in the industry, when some of their younger or less-known colleagues have been showing great potential and equal if not better acting chops in the last couple of years - they'll be ripe to step up to the plate as leading men when the 87er military enlistment starts to happen.

(and this is not even considering the fact that Jang Geun-seok has basically played the same role template for the last five years, like not a single project he's signed after You're Beautiful has deviated from that 'jerk with a cool rocker/hipster/pretty-boy wardrobe'. I don't need to see him play it again)

Do e really have rumored names? I mean not who fans want but the real deal haha.

I'd love Yoo Ah In in a rom com for once. I dont think he did anything but serious dramas until now. I wonder if he will be bad like Joo Won or not. LMH, JGS and KSH would be great too. How about JIW? So many names. I want them to pick someone in their 20.

I dislike the Hongs. There, I said it. They make fun dramas, but also absolutely shallow and repetitive ones. They are the definition of what limits rom-com Korean dramas to me.

Other than getting good pairings cast, they themselves don't really do anything special as far as I'm concerned. One OTP does not a drama make. If they are interesting and layered characters, sure, but chemistry and swoony scenes alone don't rock this boat.

Their female leads have also rarely been given some basic focus and good development, despite often being the supposed main characters. 'Fantasy Couple' was probably the only time I remember the female lead being a true lead in their work. It was also the closest I saw the Hongs come to some decent and human and normal character development and exploring actual issues, not unrelatable soapy, supernatural ones or man-trauma fests. Gumiho had its moments, but they were long gone into "trendiness" by then.

So would I want a lady who just proved herself in a great role, in a wonderful series like 'Misaeng' to end up another bubbly girl existing solely to put some oppa on a pedestal for us? No. Not for all the fame in the world. I hope Kang So Ra will only do such a show for the sake of variety and preferably by other writers, because working with such a famous pair will put her in danger of being turned into a marketable future has-been. She has also done enough to be a good candidate for some good leading roles in movies, so becoming a short-lived drama star would just be a downgrade right now.

Her career, her choice, but I am personally glad she passed this one. And I pray to the Dramagods none of my favorites will make me go through one of their shows again, since I decided to quit by now. It doesn't seem like their effort for some meaty stories/characters is coming back. In fact, it looked like a fluke when it did happen.

I realize most people disagree with me, but after having watched almost all of their shows, I have pretty much lost hope.

I'm sure there are a lot of people that agree with you, Orion. I know there are, in fact. For me personally though, I'm a romcom girl, and Hong sisters dramas are generally funny and cute. They usually chuck in a few digs at various issues in society as well, and they do love their meta. But if i want something heavier or something that is going to define women's roles in Korea, I will find something else to watch. I do get that they have a formula and they work to that formula, but I can't blame them when it's a common formula that works.

It's like the historical romance novels I read. I'm pretty sure I'm just reading the same book over and over again, the only difference is the names of the characters. But I find each book I read just as entertaining as the previous, even though I know exactly what is going to happen. It's the little things that make it interesting, and it's the same thing with the Hong sisters dramas.

This comment wasn't meant for me but I can't resist it- I'll list two of my Absolute favorites: Patricia Veryan ( I find them hysterically funny and romantic with no smut), and the great Georgette Heyer. It's not really my genre but these two ladies I adore (and of course Austen, etc. but doesn't nearly everybody love Austen?...)

I won't be surprised if it's kim soo hyun that'll be lead.

According to his reps he'll be returning mid 2015 in a big project with an a-list female actress.
The only other "big" projects that are gearing up mid-2015 without a cast are hong sisters and kim eun sook's descendants of the sun.

Oh yes! Descendants of the Sun still hasn't picked it's lead! I almost forgot about that drama since its announcement was almost a whole year ago with small random announcements. I can see Kim Soo-hyun being courted for it... No other young TV actor other than LMH and him have the kind of popularity and pull that KES is probably looking for. Since LMH did Heirs, probably KSH is the best bet. Or she can pick an older movie actor...

I'm looking forward to both dramas, and I like both guys. So if each one of them does one, then I'm good for summer.

Oh, Hong Sisters wrote my favourite drama of all time, Best Love. But all of their other dramas didn't really do much for me, especially Master's Sun which I hated with the fiery passion of a thousand suns.
I hope this one has better chemistry between the leads than the yawn-inducing Joogun and Taeyang. At least their other dramas managed that.
