for me, what was unusual about this year in dramaland are the many both positive and negative surprises

unexpectedly bad/frustrating/boring: Doctor Stranger, She's So Lovable, Trot Lovers

unexpectedly awesome/fun/exciting: High School King of Savvy, Secret Love Affair, Pinocchio, Liar Game, Triangle (although it had many flaws)

and most confusing of all, a drama that both totally surprised me with its awesomeness and then managed to frustrate and annoy me to a point where I still haven't finished it months after it ended: Fated to Love You

Loved Misaeng but dropped after ep 1 because I'm gonna save that drama when I graduate from uni next year and finally land my first ever job. I want to be somehow related to the characters at least in the setup/context. :))

BUT, LIAR GAME AND MARRIAGE NOT DATING FTW!

Finally a kdrama remake who gave enough justice to the source and finally a rom-com which is ACTUALLY a rom-com minus melo. :D

Wow, this year it's surprisingly difficult to vote, mainly because I can't narrow it down.
And it's just made me realise how many drama's I need to complete (Cantabile Tomorrow, Doctor Stranger, Yoona's Street) or still haven't got round to watching (God's Gift, Gapdong, Liar Game). And I'm still unsure of whether I should add Three Days and Bad Guys to the list, and maybe Misaeng.
Oh well, might as well make the most of being ill and carry on marathoning to try and catch up a bit.

I couldn't be happier spending my entire morning off reading the one liners, voting, and scanning the comments. What a great kdrama fan community. Thanks for the entertaining end of the year blast, dramabeans. You ROCK! I just love my kdrama life ~

Even though I'm not a YFAS fan, I would vote for Jun Ji Hyun--she excelled at silly drunken hijinks. Darn it, annoying how that show keeps coming up again and again.

Thank you, Java Beans and Girl Friday for putting this together! This is an amazing amount of work.

It looks like for the YFAS fans, this year's voting is easy. But for the rest of us, some hard choices lie ahead.

Unfortunately, darn it, I can't vote for anything that's just starting, like Dr. Frost, or something only halfway through, like Pride and Prejudice. P&P is a great show so far, but it still might fall apart in the second half. The story has a lot of moving parts. The answer as to how they fit together may be plausible or it may be full of frustrating loose ends. It's too bad about the end-of-year timing thing. Choi Min-Soo's villain in P&P actually scares me more than Shin Sung-Rok. And I love SSR's villains.

About timing: Maybe this is what happened to "Let's Eat"? It started in late November last year, so maybe it squeezed onto the 2013 ballot?

I admit I don't quite get the category "who needs a shrink." At least one of those characters already goes to a shrink, so isn't that an easy win? Or is this "needs a shrink" in the sense it's sometimes used, meaning "this person drives me crazy"? In which case, I would nominate Rain, who might need to work through whatever personal issues led him to inflict My Lovable Girl on the world.

I'm gonna have to skip that category because I have no idea what it means. And of course I don't want to offend my shrink. Hwighting!

I need a shrink for watching My Loveable Girl. Maybe if the kdrama plays backwards, it would make sense? Nah. I'll just see you in the waiting room, Rain.

I wonder if it would be possible to turn MLG into a good drama by giving it new subtitles with entirely new dialogue? Or would the characters still look too bored?

Some of this year's dramas were truly great. Personally I faithfully watched My love from another star and Fated to love you.
In Fated though I have to admit that as a woman who is not a teenager I was immeasurably annoyed by the reminiscence of the unborn child, an embryo of few weeks. What was that? Any woman who has had an unsuccessful pregnancy is supposed to pass the next years of her life mourning an unborn and unformed embryo? I don't get the point. Perhaps the ambition of the drama was to show a woman in advanced pregnancy and the lead actress didn't want to ruin her "image" or something. But the pain and the mourning was disproportionated.
When a woman loses a full grown child, what is she supposed to do? Commit suicide?
And in It's Okay, it's love. No, no, no, no and no! Dealing with a mental patient is not fun and not easy at all. When you are the phsychiatrist you are NOT supposed to date your patient and schizophrenia is NOT ANY disease (probably the writer was aiming for maniodepression and got out of hand). Schizophrenia is manifesting in late puberty and not in our thirties. Requires special care, medication and calm.
I wonder what is the limit of dramaland in diseases. Personally I thought it was the fatal illnesses.
Dramaland, don't do that again!

Perhaps you didn't watch IOIL? The psychiatrist isn't one of her boyfriend's doctors at any point. The show is really clear about that. This was one of the 90% of K-dramas where the initial synopsis didn't much resemble the final product, fortunately.

I'm friends and relatives with some amazing people who are "mental patients," so I hope dramas won't give up on the subject of mental illness just because it's complicated.

Of course even though I don't want dramas to give up, I'm still worried that the "hot topic" for dramas next month is dissociative identity disorder. I don't think you're going to have your wish for dramas to leave serious mental conditions alone, korini!

Required fields are marked *

You are quite right about the mental patients who are with proper care quite functional in society and perhaps with my poor english I did not express my objection articularly. When dealing with a VERY serious issue in entertainment you have two choices: comedy or a serious, faithful depiction. The pseudo-psychological analysis was obviously done in a rash to get the series started (by NO MEANS do I mean the actors who are two of my favourite -one of the first korean films I've watched was Frozen Flower-). It's the same thing with My Spring Days trying to deal with the very serious issue of organ transpants (I, too, come from a country where organ donation is insuffient and culturally controversial) and though judging from the finale it was obviously the theme of the drama, in the end the message it sent across was "a healthy heart can live for a few years, therefore it's futile to donate an organ?" I understand how television works and how an idea is revised along the way, but maybe certain issues are not to be presented in a frivolous way. As far as Doctor Jekyll and the other multiple personalities dramas, I still hope they will opt the choice of comedy. Otherwise... weird things will continue.

Man, 2014 really just blew by! I've only watched a handful because I started grad school. I know what I'm doing over Christmas break....

My favorite drama this year so far though is Sly and Single Again. Even though it was nothing new or masterful, it just hit me in the right spots, and I think it's so underrated. Joo Sang-wook killed it, and he's killing it again in Birth of a Beauty. I'd be so sad if he went back to playing cold, heartless chaebols!

I didn't like Sly and single but I did watch it because of Joo Sang Wook. I completely agree, he's doing great at comedy I hope he doesn't do extra-dramatic and senselessly-tragic male lead again any time soon!

Am I the only one who think It's Okay It's Love is overrated? I dropped the show because I was really annoyed by Gong Hyo Jin's character. Although I must admit Jo In Sung killed it and I kept thinking to try to watch it again because of him.

IOIL overrated? NO. evenmore people need to watch it because it's actually an eye-opener drama that needed to be watched specially by ignorant people who being careless/looking down at people who has mental illness/disorder.

and GHJ character annoying you so much? I can understand it though her character actually is one of most realistic female character ever in all kdrama I've watched.. sadly, you missed one of wonderful drama just because get annoyed by it :P

I did watch the first 2 episode but couldn't continue because of GHJ's character and her storyline, and the storyline of the lead couple too. it was just ridiculous for me. I did want to continue because I especially like Jo In Sung, and Lee Kwang Soo is my jam in Running Man but the story just didn't do it for me. not even JIS and LKS could make me stay. I do think is a bit overrated, same as Fated to Love you. I did watch 2 episodes of FTLY but the female lead completely RUINED it for me. Later I learned that it was in my best interest to drop that one

Thank you JB, GF, Odilletante, gummimochi, and all the other minions for your unflagging devotion to our obsession with Kdrama!

I blame you however, for my waste of an entire evening replaying the various ab scenes over and over in order to ensure that I vote fairly and impartially. Purely in the name of scientific research, of course. My conclusion: "Han Yo Reum" in MND, with a close second by Nam Goo Min in Secret Hotel. Hmm, I may have to go back and review my choices just to make sure.

My favorite shows of the year, in no particular order: Marriage, Not Dating, Miss Korea, YFAS, Yoona's Street, and Let's Eat. None perfect, but all of them enjoyable from beginning to end. In the Kdrama world, that is no small feat.

Not surprisingly, "Miss Korea" and "Discovery of Romance" are both underappreciated.

Those 2 were the top 2 romcoms of the year - well-written scripts/characters w/ none of the usual soap-operaish/makjong hi-jinks w/ the stereotypical, 1-note type characters.

Of course, YFAS gets a lot of love, but despite its popularity, it, while decently enjoyable, was so-so written and had too many of the soap-operaish/makjong elements (tho not nearly as bad as some other popular kdrama romcoms).

i do agree that YFAS lacked in many ways but it will forever be a warm memory for me because Queen Song Yi. LOL she was AMAZING. Even though the drama was lacking mainly in writing, CSY's character made it worth it for me. I do think is a lil but overrated tho.

These lists are dubious and some are questionable. Perhaps you've forgotten something!
Some names are conveniently left out. This is too lopsided.

Where is LEE JOON GI's name for FAVOURITE CHARACTER for the drama 'JOSEON GUNMAN' or where is the BEST KISS for "JOSEON GUNMAN'?

The most underrated drama is definitely The Three Musketeers
The most overrated drama is definitely You Who Came From The Stars
The best character... Hmmm... I didn't know whom to vote for... Chun Song Yi or Smirky Prince Sohyeon but at the end I voted for Chun SongYi since the actress nailed the character and overshadowed all the members of the cast with her superb acting skills.
My favorite drama is still Empress Ki... The Three Musketeers should have been included in the list. It almost took over Empress Ki in my heart.
The most disappointing drama is definitely Secret Hotel... I mean WHAT THE HECK WAS THAT! SUCH A MESS AND WASTE OF TALENTS!!!!
I wish you created a poll for the most overrated and underrated actors and actresses. I have a lot to say. And a poll about the SURPRISE actor or actress because I would have surely voted for Yonghwa. His Park Dalhyang performance was such a GREAT SURPRISE!

Biggest waste of my time: My Secret Hotel. Also filed away for biggest letdown, and big waste of talent for Jin Yi Han. And bigger waste of talent? Jo Seung Woo. Addicting shows, but the plots weren't very good. I dropped Dr. Stranger and She's So Lovable as fast as I could, but I couldn't avoid these two disappointments.

I'm not surprised at all to see YFAS dominate the polls! a) It's a good show. b) I'd bet many people who watch fewer dramas managed to catch that show. I haven't even finished the show yet. Judging from the first half, it is an intriguing show that draws your attention, and Chun Song Yi is a hoot. However... it joins the ranks of my other beloved dramas like Coffee Prince, My Girl, etc. but it's not the meatiest drama of the year in terms of story. Of course, my opinion is based on the first 8 ep. I've seen.

Kudos to Shin Sung Rok for playing two memorable villians this year. Too bad his character in Trot Lovers became another stock second lead, given how quirky he made him in the beginning.

My favorites this year would be:
Misaeng - thoughtful and makes me savor each episode, every minute. Winning cast and winning director. Oddly relatable to me right now post-college.
Marriage Not Dating - the show I had the most fun watching this year. The premise sounds like a hot mess but I love it. I loved watching Han Groo as much as everyone loves watching Jun Ji Hyun this year.
Highly recommend these two, although Misaeng is incomplete. YFAS and Misaeng are the buzz dramas of the year. Honorable mentions to:
Miss Korea - An underdog drama with a lot of heart. Not afraid to go a bit darker for the sake of its story. The last few episodes are puzzling - either end it earlier or go big with the end.
IOIL - I do think this was a bit overrated though. It lost its momentum for me in the last third.
Plus Nine Boys - This lost its momentum for me too. Still, an underrated drama that is more interesting than what its premise suggests.

Dramas from this show I need to watch/finish: Pinnochio, Pride and Prejudice, Surplus Princess, Gapdong. Oddly enough, I look forward to P&P the most even though I'm also watching Pinnochio and Misaeng. It's those teases of romance and the big mystery. I haven't watched Liar Game, FTLY, or Witch's Romance because other dramas were airing at the same period and these fell to the back burner because I'd already watched/read the originals, but judging from recaps they seem like well done remakes.

You should've inserted a "Worst Dad Ever", and the choices could've been:
-Seonjo, for KING'S FACE
-Injo, for THREE MUSKETEERS
-Yeongjo, for SECREET DOOR
-Jeong Bo-seok, for CANTABILE TOMORROW
and I'd pick either Seonjo or Jeong Bo-seok. XP

Also, "Best Dad" would be Il-lac's dad XD

There's hot leads, a lovely Oppa, a farting fortune teller, a scary witch, an even scarier mother...
PS only good thing about Iron Man, the lovely Secretary Studly, and even then he almost wasn't enough to keep me watching the awfully written ending.

I think it's funny because You from Another Star was like the best and it was so good I almost forgot it came out this year because I remember spending my whole life obsessed with that show. Seriously I feel bad that it was that long ago because a lot of other good dramas came out his year as well and bad ones, but I had to be honest and give You from Another Stars what it deserved and I voted for them in every good category, at the same time I loved Liar Game and I think it's funny that the villain in both shows are played by the same actor. He was like in 4 dramas as one of the leads this year and that's crazy!!!! <3

Liar game definitely had the best memory loss because it's the only one that's true memory loss. The kind of memory loss that we all have with time. I can't remember all of the kids I played with when I was little. I remember going over to spend the night on a friend's farm. Who the hell did I know that lived on a farm? Can't remember anymore, but I sure wouldn't recognize them as adults.

I just started getting into Kdrama's this year. I feel like there is too many dramas and no time to watch them! I love how every single one I've watched so far.. (All lee min ho dramas, You from another star, Cantabile's Tomorrow, Pinocchio,Its okay that's love, Master's Sun, Reply 1997)

..I've enjoyed to the fullest. SO DIFFERENT from Television in the U.S. Even though I still feel I have a lot to catch up to (while still trying to have a somewhat productive life) I can tell this year has been rich in drama land.

YFAS got almost half of my votes. It really was great!
Hope Pinocchio and Cantabile's tomorrow gets more votes :)

Liar Game
Let's Eat
Marriage Not Dating
Witch's Romance

I tried Heirs, IOIL, YFAS, God's Gift, FTLY, Emergency Couple, My Secret Hotel, and Miss Korea but I found them either boring or frustrating.

SSR was an awesome villain, though immensely more in Liar Game than YFAS (character bias, not due to worse acting).

And the Witch's Romance bromance was the best thing ever!

I came here looking for solace because I was so mad that dramafever included She's So Lovable in the vote for best drama--out of 6 spots. Does that even make sense?

So I got to vote. Yay! Although Let's Eat wasn't up as much as I would like at least it was there. And Marriage not Dating which was so fun. And my two favorite family dramas were here as well. What's up with this Family and Thrice Married Woman. I am having the most fun with Family right now.

There are lots of good dramas i did not watch this year but I saw a lot in the beginning of the year. However it has been a year for bad endings. The Prime Minister and I really made my blood boil for some reason. That drama was so fun until the end and the year apart and all that. A ploy I am getting very tired of. And i cannot think of many dramas i watched to the end that had satisfying endings.

But all in all I was very entertained this year and look forward to another year of kdrama feels.

Initially I just back to check some categories that I didnt vote before but I'm so surprise that IOIL is the most favorite drama currently with highest percentage 32% :O

I really didnt expect this before, seriously, how could it be??? there is many comments saying it's overrated, how the medical part was annoying etc... I think IOIL would be less loved by DB's readers since the recaps weren't that positive...

this is really big surprise for me and I'm so happy visiting DB this time LOL

I can accept people saying they dislike IOIL, they didnt enjoy IOIL, IOIL isnt their cup tea, and etc.... but saying IOIL isnt great drama? that people need to really check first IOIL and do comparison with the drama that she/he thinks great... because as much as you dislike certain character or how medical being handled, there was no Kdrama like IOIL before!

you ask acting? writing? directing? music? chemistry? supporting character? realistic story? moral lesson? comedy? crying scene? encouragement massage? IOIL is definitely one of the best in almost every department! :)

Wow! I really had difficulty picking some of these categories. So many dramas I liked this year.

Best Kiss - I had to give that to INR 3. She actually used tongue in that kiss. lol

Best Villain - It's funny that SSK is actually up against himself for this category.

Some of my picks were odd since I only made picks on dramas I actually watched in it's entirety.

My top ten dramas this year in order of addiction:

1. Bride of the Century - I was so addicted to this drama, I actually set my alarm so I can wake up to watch it as it aired in Korea. I haven't done that before and haven't done it since.

2. Misaeng - as a whole, best acted drama I have seen this year plus it was so nice watching a drama that had minimum cliches.

3. My Love From The Stars - best produced drama this year. It had top notch everything - actors, cinematography, production value, OST. It's the Maybach of dramas.

4. High School King of Savvy - not every one's cup of tea but I really enjoyed the dorkiness of this drama. Taboo romance be damned! lol

5. Marriage Not Dating - Han Groo.. nuff' said.

6. Liar Game - best suspense drama this year even though I did skip on the parts where they explained the rules of the game since I gave up on trying to understand it. It made more sense once they started playing.

7. Fated To Love You - The Jangs, that insane laugh, that hair, Keddongie.. also had the best OST this year.

8. Miss Korea - I really like this drama. Too bad it aired opposite the juggernaut that is My Love From The Stars. This might be the last drama we'll see Lee Sun Kyun for a while. I hear his movie gigs have taken off so he might be just sticking to that like Gong Yoo.

9. I Need Romance 3 - they didn't mess around when it came to skinship. Great OST.

10. A tie between Witch's Romance and Sly and Single Again - it had it's shaky parts (the beginning with Sly and when the ex boyfriend showed up in WR) but overall it was a fun watch.

Disappointments:

It's Okay It's Love - I would have stuck to this drama if it wasn't playing around the time when there were a lot good dramas on my plate already. I think I dropped it right after that "sex on the beach" scene. I just found it crazy that someone who had a severe sex trauma most of her life decided to do a complete 180 and do something even normal people would not do. I might pick it up again just to keep my record intact of having seen every Gong Hyo Jin drama.

My Secret Hotel - I love me some Yoo In Na but the story became too boring. Not good for a drama that has suspense elements in it.

Prime Minister and I - I don't think I have ever praised a drama so much then get disappointed in the end. It was 2/3 of a great rom-com.

there are a few dramas I didn't watch in the Best Leading Couple category but for me none of the nominees hold a candle to Han Groo and YWJ's Nemo Couple. The writers really knew how to develop that relationship. I hadn't watch the 2 actors in anything worth noticing but they really impressed me as Gong Ki Tae and Joo Jang Mi. I can't see how anyone would choose any of the other nominees over the Nemo couple, but then again i didn't watch Pinocho, I need Romance, She's so lovable, Doctor stranger, and High school love on.
Best not-so-Alternate Pairing is Ahjumma and ex-cop Ahjussi from God's gift 14 days BY FAR. like I'LL NEVER UNDERSTAND WHY THEY NEVER WERE CANNON
