Newsroom drama Pinocchio secures rookie reporter cast

We’ve finally got a lineup for upcoming SBS newsroom drama Pinocchio, and there aren’t any big surprises or shakeups. Park Shin-hye (Heirs) was first to confirm the offer, and now Lee Jong-seok (Doctor Stranger), Lee Yubi (Gu Family Book), and Kim Young-kwang (Plus Nine Boys) have officially signed on. Of course I’M terribly excited that Lee Jong-seok will be reuniting with I Hear Your Voice’s writer-director team, because I miss the warm fuzzies that that drama made me feel. Where are you, warm fuzzies of dramaland? Won’t you return to me?

The drama stars a foursome of bright-eyed, bushy-tailed rookie broadcast reporters at the city news desk, and will be a coming-of-age story about launching themselves into their first real-world social battleground in their twenties. They’ll basically spend every waking moment together because they have to work around the clock, and naturally, hijinks and romance will come to pass.

Park Shin-hye plays the heroine who suffers from a form of Pinocchio syndrome, which makes her hiccup whenever she tells a lie. For some odd reason she chooses to be a news reporter because of this, likely because she’s idealistic enough to think she won’t ever have to lie on the job. Lee Jong-seok plays a young reporter who’s been working at the news desk for a year. He’s tall and good-looking (well duh), but his shabby appearance — rundown clothes, bowl-cut hair (ack!) — hides all his good features and nobody gives him a second glance. But he’s eloquent and has an especially sharp memory, and just needs the right grooming and cultivating to put his best foot forward.

Kim Young-kwang plays a chaebol heir with a sunny disposition, who’s never once had to live like a commoner while growing up. He spent a year working at a fashion magazine and quit, and tries his hand at broadcast news instead. Unlike the hero, he’ll be the kind of well-dressed, confident, handsome man to turn heads everywhere he goes. Lee Yubi plays an ex-sasaeng-fan (in her high school and college days) who turns her idol fangirl know-how into useful skills as a reporter. She’s described as timid but extremely dogged, which sounds contradictory and yet perfect to describe a rabid fan.

The cast also includes Lee Pil-mo (Emergency Couple), Byun Hee-bong (Flower Grandpa Investigation Unit), Kang Shin-il (God’s Gift–14 Days), and I Hear Your Voice’s hilarious judge Kim Kwang-kyu, and Gap-dong’s Jung In-ki who are both reuniting with the PD.

Pinocchio follows She’s So Lovable on Wednesdays and Thursdays in November. Whoo!

I have to agree. I'm not sure if PSH was supposed to act like that or not...but ya cringeworthy indeed

IDK I found LMH way more uncomfortable to watch than PSH lol Maybe that's because if a guy dragged me to a closet, and then imposed himself to me, I'd be pretty terrified too.

Of course she was petrified. He was sucking the life force out from her. She was shocked and just wasn't professional enough to act like she enjoyed it. The director thought it was romantic so this made the cut.

She kissed well on FBND. Well, since when new k-drama have good kissing scene?

What's an idol? A celebrity that you idolize. Why are only music acts... idols? If you think about it, actors can also be seen as idols.

Also Park Shin Hye recently sang in OSTs and even had mini concerts. If she becomes a singer, would she be an idol?

My Lovely Girl is not registering as anything but the drama that will have to end before I can see this. I really hope it lives up to expectations, Pinocchio that is.

and I love two of this cast but the other two (PSH/KYK) I am not so sure about. Not sure about how they will match with Lee Jong Seok or Lee Yubi...

Her role in Nice Guy was so small, but she was ok.

Gu Family Book was where she was truly impressive. She was a rookie but gave the best performance of all the young leads. Even more impressed because she was a rookie and it was a sageuk which is a genre even some veteran actors can't do well.

After the first 2 episodes, I think her story in the Gu Family Book was the most interesting one, and she was amazing as an actress.

She was so funny in vampire idol, in nice guy she did ok but her character wasn't that difficult but in family Gu, personally, she was the best among the young ones, her story was interesting too. Definitly, an actrees to keep an eye on.

I'm looking forward her movie with Woo bin and this drama (even if I think the leads don't match at all, and she should be the lead xD)

PNB is on cable which usually does not do extreme live shoots...
plus he is second lead in Pinocchio so he might not even appear in the first episode. Might just show up briefly at first like a cameo.

Yay! PSh, is back...I like LjS when he plays serious , less cute roles ...so I hope this one will be more about a common guy andd won't have that cuteness that takes away the realistic part of the role , and makes you think that he's not even a teenager. Weird cause, Yoon Shi Yoon acts with the same bits but i can see him as a man ie an adult.
I hope i have time to watch this...xD

I'd honestly much rather have Kim Young Kwang play the lead role. Lee Jong Seok's acting bothers me: stiff sometimes, over-the-top the other times.

But of course SBS will want to sell this drama overseas, so you bring in the big guns (even if those guns can't aim very well).

And Park Shin Hye? I predict many dead fish kissing scenes. Bets on whether or not her eyes would be open or closed during those scenes.

Not a fan of saesang fans IRL, but LYB's character sounds the most interesting out of the lot. The rest... not quite, especially the dudes'.

Still, I liked IHYV and the premise so I will definitely give this a try despite my nonchalance towards the leads.

PS - Lee Pil-mo is in this?!

@Knookey
A journalist revealed that "scandal" was actually created by internet journalists who intentionally cut and abused his airport pictures and video on that day for clicks. When journalists don't have any controversies to milk for clicks and money, they simply create them... and  LJS's case is a well known example among Korean netizens.

What was that about? I'm intrigued.

Search his name on netizenbuzz
If you feel it might affect your drama viewing experience, then don't read it. It's not bad, but it may have been a quote taken out of context

Required fields are marked *

arghhh.. im contemplating right now whether to search for netizenbuzz or not. I like LJS as an actor but the other comments seem to say that what LJS did was really bad :(

0

We are probably the only two in the room who feels that way with regards to LJS's acting. I found him serviceable in IHYV when he's acting out the character's everyday moments, but not quite in the emotional scenes. I caught KYK in WC and I thought he was pretty good overall in that in spite of my immense hatred for his character. Still, I can see how he is more appealing > KYK to the general populous. Sigh, I was hoping for Hong Jong Hyun to star in this because I honestly think he deserves the opportunity and more attention at present.

PSH... She really needs to stop picking vanilla roles and this unfortunately sounds more of the same old. Hopefully it isn't.

Would be great if there isn't much romance in this series so lesser reason to sell it (hence, lesser intimate scenes) and also because this sounds like something that would be more interesting without romance.

0

Required fields are marked *

I think PSH('s people) is(are) able to predict when a drama would do well financially. For a drama to do well with her in it, people would expect a romance. So I'm afraid your wish won't come true.

Oh well, we can only hope there will come a time when PSH will be forced to kiss properly on-screen. Besides isn't that the point of acting? You convey the character fully, not shutting down at the romantic scenes.

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

Haha, yeah, as long as the romance isn't central to the story. I think I'm more interested in seeing these dweebs deal with problems they face in the broadcast workplace. That itself has a lot of fodder.

I totally agree with you about kissing. But I don't think the kissing is so much as a problem for me as her general body language in intimate scenes is. She literally stiffens up when the male leads touch her.

I personally think she generally does the job well but very technically, if you know what I mean. I rather watch someone with lesser experience and wonkier acting skills but plays her character with more heart. Like Go Ara for example (BTW, not a fan of hers, just an example).

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yeah I can imagine the hi-jinks will be strong in this drama for the first few episodes, then things will slow down once the romance kicks in. I notice this happens a lot with the big network dramas, while TvN (I'm turning into such a TvN fangirl) manages to keep some dramas staying strong and quick-paced.

Yeah I agree with you completely! I liked her acting in Flower Boy Next Door and was honestly impressed. Another actress better at conveying emotions during intimate scenes would be better, after all, it IS the romance that sells.

Though you know, I do have a theory of why she kisses the way she does: to allow the girls/women watching to easily place themselves in her shoes kissing that character. Think about it, she acts as the blank, and they'll fill in the blanks with the image of them making out with the lead. I know I did the same with the kiss in Flower Boy Ramyun Shop (damn that was so hot).

I like to think that SBS and the makers of this drama think highly of LJS' acting ability. Like I do. ;-)

I like LJS too.

SBS probably picked him because he has a lot of fans. I was honestly hoping he would turn down the drama when PSH chose to be the female lead, cause she might ruin this drama.

i trust the IHYV writer and I hope this drama does well and is fun to watch despite people already being against it.

I would tell people who don't like LJS's acting, that he is new, and getting better with every role. He was good in Doctor Stranger, but the plot was horrible.

Here's hoping the writing and directing team can mold this cast into something great.

Park Shin Hye playing a character to HAS to be aggressive instead of passive to get the job done should be a great opportunity for her. She will need to make sure the director and script don't let every male she has a scene with dominate her.

I expect Lee Yubi to crackle in every scene. She don't let nothin' get past her.

I think the point Crisp is trying to make is that there are other young, (perhaps more?) talented actors out there but lead roles and CFs are only going to the same select pool of actors.

And LJS is a prime (but not the only) example. I mean, he's practically everywhere. I'm not saying he's not talented, but he is definitely overrated and hardworking to a fault. At this rate he's going, he is only going to peak way too early for his liking.

They seem to be always the ones getting the leading roles for both movies and dramas. I feel like I see them everywhere. I guess I like to see a mix of leading men. Is that too much to ask?

I know, I know. It's all about money and popularity. That's why idols have better opportunities in getting leading roles because of their immense fan-base.
