Fated To Love You: Episode 20 (Final)

The day we dreaded since we first fell in love is finally upon us, which means that it’s time to say goodbye to the zany and whimsical side of Fated To Love You, while conveniently shelving the angsty side somewhere easily forgotten. At least this isn’t one of those endings that forgets to be an ending, because you’d be hard-pressed to think of one thread that doesn’t get tied into the neatest of bows. If anything, it’s almost too much of an ending, in that it replaced all conflict with cuteness a week ago and decided to spend its last hour as an epilogue. First world problems.

FINAL EPISODE RECAP

Just as Manager Tak is about to send everyone home now that they’re missing their bride and groom, Gun and Mi-young come through the door hand in hand. Grandma Wang is beside herself with joy.

Mi-young notices Mom is missing, but still begins her walk down the aisle… At least until Mom yells frantically from the doorway, “I’m here!!” She all but falls into Gun’s arms as she worries she’s too late, but everyone’s all smiles and laughter. She’s just in time.

Gun and Mi-young begin their official walk down the aisle this time, which is like night and day compared to when Gun looked like he was walking to his grave the first time around.

Yong notices one of the candles is unlit during the ceremony, and uses his magical fire powers to light it. Haha. I still don’t get this bit, but I’m glad they’re committing to it through the end.

Then it’s the exchange of vows. They promise to take each other as husband and wife, and say aloud (and together) their promise to love and cherish each other for the rest of their lives, till death do they part.

But then there’s the addendum they both say: “No, even if death separates us, we swear to be together forever.” Now man and wife, they kiss to seal the deal. (*sniff*)

On their way to their honeymoon spot on Jeju Island, Gun complains about how short their trip has to be because of Mi-young’s work schedule. She preempts his question on whether work is more important to her than he is, which causes him to stop the car as he extols his impressive lineage, all, Pfft, like I was going to ask anyway! (He was totally going to ask.)

Mi-young takes things into her own hands by literally taking the wheel, leaving Gun panicked in the passenger seat as he asks her if she even has a license. She says she does, but that she’s never driven a car before. HAH.

It’s her way of getting out of Gun’s proposal that she’d have to kiss him at every stop light, but it backfires adorably when Gun realizes that he can kiss her at will now that he’s not the one driving. Cue cuteness overload.

Manager Tak and Yong, dressed like spies, undertake a mission they call “Revival Macau,” which entails them preparing the honeymoon suite (Room 2009) so that Gun and Mi-young can get down to business. Grandma Wang’s orders, of course—she wants a grandchild stat.

We flash back to Grandma Wang telling Gun that she wants a grandchild to hold in ten months, only for Gun to tell her that he planned on enjoying newlywed life with his snail for at least six months. Since that didn’t sit well with her, Manager Tak and Yong are there to make sure things go according to her plan.

Our newlywed couple arrives at Room 2006, and it’s funny how both of them make sure that last number is stuck on and totally unflippable. Little do they know that the two spies are watching from the peephole in Room 2009 across the hall.

After Mi-young puts the kibosh on sexy times before the sun sets, the two of them slow dance under the stars. Mi-young tells him that her father used to dance with her when she was young, calling her “Princess Mi-young” even though she admits that she never felt like much of a princess, and more like a maid.

Gun takes offense to that as he says that his Mi-young is no maid, but a pretty and kind princess who found the key to this prince’s heart. She laughs at the cheesiness of calling him “Prince Lee Gun,” while Manager Tak and Yong literally watch on with snacks in hand.

But they’ve still got something else planned: They’re going to drug the two of them again to really recreate that night in Macau. I’m… not quite sure how to respond to that.

To make matters worse, Gun reiterates to Mi-young that this is their first real night together, considering that neither of them remember that night in Macau.

So to be sure they remember tonight, they make a pact to keep themselves clearheaded, unaware that Manager Tak and Yong have already bribed the bartender to drug their drinks. But when Gun is rejected for a love shot, he brings up how she had no problem doing it with Daniel…

…Which opens another can of worms, since Mi-young had no idea Gun was following her around back then and isn’t all that pleased about it. They both down their (drugged) drinks as a challenge before ordering another round, and Gun makes another misstep when he tells her she shouldn’t drink so much. Mi-young isn’t the snail she used to be, and isn’t a fan of being told what to do.

She leaves in a huff, but Gun isn’t too worried—she’s only got one place to go, and it’s the same as him. He does notice a familiar taste in the drink a little too late, since we find Mi-young stumbling back to her room as she grumbles about having a lover’s quarrel with Gun.

Gun is next to all but crawl his way down the hall, laughing hysterically at the generic paintings on the hotel walls for whatever reason. He can’t escape that feeling of deja vu as he stubbornly tries to enter what should be Room 2006, but which has now been labeled Room 2009 by the Spy Duo.

Mi-young is already in bed when Gun crawls into it, and they find each other with their eyes closed before Gun pulls the blanket over their heads…

Grandma Wang asks the multiple portraits of the Lee Clan ancestors to bless Gun and Mi-young so that they return as three, instead of two. Mama Yong also joins in the prayers, even adding her hope that they’ll have twins.

Dressed in traditional wedding hanbok in a cartoonishly familiar world, Gun and Mi-young act out their wild night together much like they did in Episode 2, replete with zany innuendo. Wouldn’t be the same without it.

They wake up with a scream the next morning, neither of them having any recollection of what happened the night before. Gun cries as he remembers this exact situation in Macau, especially since he’s been looking forward to sleeping with her for years now… and he can’t remember it.

He can’t even remember if they slept slept together, though all signs point to yes. They try to piece together the events of last night, and while both of them remember feeling strangely drunk, Gun belatedly remembers seeing Manager Tak and Yong outside his room. He was just too drugged to recognize them then.

Gun finds them across the hall in Room 2009, and makes the two of them kneel with their hands over their heads like schoolchildren. But Manager Tak and Yong spill the beans to Mi-young that it’s all because of what Gun told Grandma Wang about not wanting a child right away.

Still, Gun can’t get over how the Spy Duo ruined the first night of his honeymoon—but I love how he ends up being the one to hold Mi-young back when she launches at the pair for insinuating that sacrificing one night isn’t such a huge deal when they’ll have countless more in the future.

Daniel confronts Se-ra’s mother with the picture of him and his sister as children, and she doesn’t deny that the little girl is indeed Se-ra. While the weight of this revelation settles in, Se-ra arrives in time for her mother to pull her aside and tell her the truth: She’s adopted.

Se-ra’s mother, freshly lobotomized, shares a tender moment with her adopted daughter as they both agree that they’re still mother and daughter even if they’re not related by blood.

After Gun gets to brag about his wife’s success as an artist, the two lie on the hotel rooftop and stare at the stars. They reminisce about when their fate actually began, and while Mi-young thinks it was when he called her his lady luck at the casino, he thinks it started when they first met, chasing after his ring.

“The thing called fate,” Gun muses, “I thought it would be special, but I don’t think it is. Right now, the person in front of me… Everything will be fine as long as I’m with her. Not being able to imagine being with anyone else but her… I think that’s what fate is.”

“I’m okay even if we aren’t fated to love each other,” Mi-young replies. “Because I’d still love you like we were.” Gun takes her hand as he tells her that her future with him won’t be without difficulties, but Mi-young isn’t afraid, and doesn’t want him to be either: “Let’s do our best to love each other and be happy together every moment of every day for the rest of our lives.”

So Gun makes a vow to her as they look up at the night sky: “Until the day all those stars disappear, I’ll love you like you’re my fate every day.” Mi-young: “Until the day all those stars disappear, I’ll love you like you’re my fate every day.”

And at what feels like long last, the two get to have a night together they’ll actually remember, complete with candlelight and all their unspoken words of undying love passing between them as they kiss, undress, and make love.

One month later.

Grandma Wang and Gun wait in the doctor’s office with bated breath until Mi-young comes out bearing news… she’s having twins! Grandma Wang is over the moon with happiness as she praises her grandson’s virility, which, hah.

But it’s not long before Gun jokingly blames his grandmother for taking away their chance to live as plain ol’ newlyweds, even though he can’t stay that upset. Plus, Grandma Wang isn’t the least bit sorry.

Se-ra finds a post-it note inviting her out for ice cream from her oppa. It’s their first time meeting since they found out they’re brother and sister, since both of them needed time to process their feelings.

But from now on, Daniel wants them to live as siblings, which Se-ra agrees to. In a throwback to their first meeting on the plane, Daniel draws a portrait of his sister—only now he doesn’t have to guess what she looks like.

When Se-ra asks why he’s drawing his sister alone, Daniel’s eyes brim with tears as he mentions the day he lost her while buying ice cream. He tells it like a story that isn’t about her, which is maybe the only way he can get through it, but all that matters is that Se-ra understands.

They both have tears in their eyes as Daniel laments that he wasn’t fast enough back then and has been sorry for it ever since, to which Se-ra replies that he can make it up now by buying his sister that long-awaited ice cream.

Daniel holds out his hand to her, “I’ll never go off by myself again. I’ll always hold on tightly to our Mi-young’s hand.” Se-ra smiles through her tears as she takes his hand and calls him “Oppa.”

Three years later. Doctor Moon and Gun take a look at his crystal clear brain scans, with the good doctor surmising that if he’s had no more symptoms at his age, he can expect to live the rest of his life free of his family’s genetic disease.

However, Gun knows that Doctor Moon is courting Mi-young’s mother, and gives him some tips… like calling her “Lettuce Wrap Lady,” Gun’s favorite nickname for her. And it totally works, earning Doctor Moon a date with an extra-coquettish Mom.

Since we’re wrapping up everyone’s stories neatly, we find out that Manager Tak does have a passion outside of serving Gun—and that passion is dance. (In a fun throwback, his instructor turns out to be one of the many clones of Gun and Mi-young’s prenatal class teacher.)

He totally fangirls when he learns he’ll be taking lessons from a legendary dancer named Charles, only to recognize the pink-clad legend after he salsa’s up to him as none other than Lawyer Hong. Like Manager Tak, he needed a hobby, and it’s not long before the two stop using petty human words in favor of dance, the universal language.

While waiting for Se-ra to get out of her teaching job, Daniel watches with amusement as one of her young male students professes his undying love for her. Then he scares the kid off by saying that he’s the one who loves Se-ra most in this world, only for her to reply that Daniel is also the man she loves the most in this world.

Afterward, Se-ra uses Daniel’s given name to scold him for saying his sister is the person he loves most when he could be dating. Daniel tosses back that she doesn’t have much room to talk when she’s pretty, but also just as single.

Mama Yong reluctantly attends a meeting with Ji-yeon and her father, intent on showing her disapproval once and for all. But when Ji-yeon’s father is revealed to be a chaebol, and she a chaebol heiress, Mama Yong sure does change her tune fast.

When Yong asks why Ji-yeon kept her lineage a secret from him, she admits that she didn’t want him to love her because of her money. But now that Mama Yong smells money, she’s all for a quick marriage.

Gun and Mi-young have a picnic with their twins, a boy and a girl, now toddlers. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Gun was born to be a father, but he manages to surprise even Mi-young when he offers to read the kids his favorite story…

…And he pulls out a hand-drawn, hand-written book called “Princess Snail.” It’s the story of a princess who wore round glasses like their mother, and who was bad at studying. Haha.

The story goes on to say that the princess had an illness making her incapable of refusing a stranger’s request, as well as being incapable of abandoning anyone. In fact, as he tells them, she didn’t even know she was a princess, and thought she was a maid.

Then Gun tells of the rude prince from a neighboring land who called the princess “Snail,” and, living up to her namesake, the princess crept into his life and heart. The prince fell in love with the princess, and suffered an illness where he couldn’t live without her.

As we get taken through a flashback reel, Gun alludes to his real illness by saying that others were worried for the prince, but that he wasn’t afraid because the princess was by his side. “As long as the princess is next to him, the prince will never get sick again.”

He flips to the last page of the book, with a drawing of him and Mi-young, their two children, and lots of adorable snails as he finishes the tale: “The princess and the prince had twins and are living happily ever after.” And forever more, just in case the “ever after” wasn’t enough.

When Gun asks Mi-young if she ever regretted marrying him, she treats it like the ridiculous question it is—why would she?

“Thank you for being by my side from today, and at this very moment.” Gun says.

“Thank you for always being with me that time, not sometime, but this moment,” Mi-young replies.

“I love you, Princess Snail.”

“I love you, Prince Lee Gun.”

COMMENTS

What a sweet ending. Admittedly, I was a little worried during that dark stretch of episodes dealing with Gun’s amnesia and noble idiocy, since that’s where this version deviated so much from the original that any crossover viewers (like me) inevitably lost the ability to predict what would or could happen. Which isn’t a bad thing, since I’m all for adaptations staying true to their roots while forging their own identity. And it’s safe to say that Fated’s strongest point was in its ability to cherry pick what worked in the original while leaving out what didn’t.

And for a little more than half the episode count, this show was perfect. Which is why feeling even vaguely dissatisfied at the end of it all hits much harder than it should, because it’s not the same as watching a nonsensical ending to a bad show or even a mediocre ending to an already-middling show—Fated To Love You was like a ray of sunshine on dramaland’s darkest day. It was the drama that reminded us why we started watching dramas, with a crack factor through the roof, witty writing, and sparkling chemistry between two leads who could not have been more perfectly cast.

But it began to lose what made it truly stand out when Gun’s illness came to the fore, and when it became less about them as a couple and more about Gun shouldering the weight of the world on his shoulders. Noble idiocy isn’t a bad trope in and of itself, and while what Gun did and why wasn’t so beyond the realm of reason as to be incomprehensible, that story thread did surprisingly little to enrich our viewing experience or understanding of the characters.

Because in the end and after years of operating under misinformation and lies from Gun’s camp, Mi-young made the same decision regarding him and his illness as she would have if she’d known the information sooner. The three years spent apart became meaningless, which in effect seemed to make the whole exercise meaningless. So much ended up riding on an illness Gun wasn’t even sure he’d have, and the drama pivoted to become more about the two of them learning to love in the moment without worrying about the future.

Which is, again, a perfectly fine thing for a drama to focus on, except it became about nothing else. It’s a shame when there was so much to mine from how they met through how they dealt with the loss of their unborn child, to their rediscovery of each other. But instead, Gun’s noble idiocy act was like hitting the pause button on what was, up until then, a fast-paced plot—and worst of all, he wasn’t even the one to hit play again.

Even understanding his reasoning now doesn’t change the fact that the story slowed to a crawl after the time skip, and what oddly felt like filler these past couple weeks actually turned out to be filler. I was a bit surprised that this week was dedicated to tying up every single possible loose end you could think of, as well as those you didn’t (because really, who among us would have felt genuinely robbed if we didn’t get an ending for Lawyer Hong?), which seems more indicative of a show that got saddled with a sudden extension more than a show which knew it had twenty episodes from the start it had to fill with story and, yunno, conflict.

But lest I sound too hard on a show that did bring so many of us so much joy, it should be said that though Fated tested the limits on how much time it could stall for, even its filler was packed with more cute antics and warm fuzzies than most shows could ever dream of. It’s still the puppy parade of dramas, but with the bittersweet reminder that those puppies are getting older with every day that passes. Which I guess is as good a reason as any to remind us to enjoy the time we have, even if I already miss the time that’s passed.

Gummi and HN2, thank you so much for giving us a place to share the FTLY experience and to consider, and laugh and cry and snark. I always learn new things when I read your recaps. But more than learning, I enjoy your recaps. So thank you!

Onto the heavy lifting:

DPittJerkboll - the Mr.Data of the USS-KDrama, might have been the most tragic of kdrama characters ever written. How can a character be written without a soul? But even Mr. Data explored the possibility of finding his soul one day and expanded and matured. DPittJerkBoll didnt grow, didnt change, didn't learn, didnt mature....in every other kdrama I have ever watched, there was always some growth in even the minor characters. Didnt hamo hamo guy reduce his oral hamo flatulence from "constant" to just "too often?" Didnt Lawyer Min go from nice to dick to even dickier to disappearing altogether? Didn't KMY's bf go from being poor, plucky and prospect-less to being rich and married at the arbitrary stroke of a magic keyboard? Why didn't DPittJerkBoll ever get that same opportunity? I can only surmise that it was because he was an android but not a 4.4.4 kitkat android because the latter gets updates as it were. So long DPittJerkBoll, may you get that emotion chip you have been asking for.

Sera - what a waste. Your actress has the chops to go head to heas against JNR's KMY and you got reduced to being a weasly crying wreck who gets bitch slapped by your mom and that was your highlight. Omg what a waste. Omg what a waste.

What can I say about the drama other than it was great for 10 and messed up for 10.

I love both JNR and JH and I think both deserve all the credit for the good, and none if the credit for the nonsensical writing in the latter half of the series.

I just want to praise the drama but I feel like Ive already done that because to me the drama mostly ended weeks ago. KMY's quiet dignity and strength was such a magnet for not only Gunnie but for me as well.

And since Gunnie and KMY stole my heart early, even now I still love FTLY, since with all things/persons we love, we overlook the negative and embrace anyway.

Another drama has come and gone, but not forgotten despite its best efforts to be so as the series came to an end. PD was trying to be a noble idiot and get us to forget JNR and JH? Not even if the heavens fall.

Moar snail bewbs pls for FTLY 2: Hamo Hamo Strikes Back (aka the Sisters Clone Wars).

I sooo agree with you about KMY's quiet dignity and strength. And I love how she managed to be cute without being cutsy. I never get past the first episode of a lot of dramas because the heroine is too annoying to watch but MY was truly a joy to watch to the very end.
I was disappointed with how Sera was treated too.
I can't help but feel like they ran out of time and the writer was not getting enough sleep to think straight. Or they were too busy trying to figure out how get as much PPL as possible in the last episodes. The quality of the writing definitely dropped towards the end.

*** Standing Ovation! Long Applause! ***

What a lovely, romantic, and heartwarming final episode! A perfect ending to the drama that captivated my heart and mind. Thank you, “Fated to Love You"!

Just like all of the previous episodes, this finale is teeming with feel good scenes and an awesome ending scene. My personal favorite is the hotel rooftop scene where LG and MY said to each other that "Until the day the stars disappear, every day, they will love each other like they are each others' fate". How romantic and poetic!

Thanks HeadsNo2! I owe it to you that I get to enjoy this satisfying and wonderful drama. Your episode 2 recap was such a fun read that I was persuaded to watch this remake of a popular TW drama that I originally didn't plan to watch.

Before I say goodbye to my favorite drama of the year, may I gush with more praise one last time?

1. I truly love every facet of FTLY - its actors, writing, directing, OST, set design, costume (including LG’s much talked about hair), animation effects, use of art, etc.

2. Like many viewers' comments have said, the actors, both the leads and supporting, are AWESOME. First, the chemistry between Jang Hyuk and Jang Nara in FTLY is impeccable. From ep 1 to 20, they are a joy to watch. Even individually, or on scenes where they are not together, Jang Hyuk and Jang Nara still shine. JH shines in LG's unique and deranged kind of laugh, in LG's "hungry" eyes for MY, and in those heartbreaking and poignant scenes of ep 11, 12, and 17. Equally brilliant is Jang Nara who embodied MY's kindness to everyone, understated beauty, and love for her family and birthplace, MY's wisdom, cute mannerisms when she adjusts her eyeglasses, her beautiful smile, and MY's pain when she lost Keddonggie.

Then there's the supporting actors, who played their parts well; some even leaving indelible marks of how the characters they portrayed made the story of the main characters more fun and memorable. No previous kdrama I've seen that I can name a supporting character, beyond the second lead characters. Here in FTLY, we have Sec. Tak with his loyalty to LG and booty shake, we have Yong with dragon spitting fire power was a true brother to both LG and MY, MY's Omma and her lettuce wraps which not only fed LG and Dr. Moon but also became a symbol of motherly love, and the rest of the supporting characters. One special mention I'd like to make to a supporting character who despite not being seen physically was truly unforgettable, and that is Keddonggie.

...Continuation...

3. I couldn't help but think then that it's no coincidence that both the main and supporting characters of FTLY are so memorable. The writers made them that way. Each of those characters has said or done something significant either to keep or change the status quo of the story. The writers have put in the dialogues and in the actions of the characters, not only witty lines or catch phrases, but also a variety of emotions from happy, sad, angry, romantic, jealous, frustrated, fearful, anxious, hungry, longing, swooning, giddy, to humorous, and others. In each episode, there is at least one funny and witty moment delivered by 1 or more of the characters. The writers also made the tensions between the lead characters palpable so much so many viewers have decried the angsty episodes. Those angsty episodes started when the writers introduced us to the world of HD disease. As the HD disease put a damper on the LG and MY's love story, the writers used it to leave us in self-reflection about seizing the day, loving against all odds, and taking care of our health. From ep 1 to this finale, the writers carefully have put details in their telling of the story, making the episode and characters memorable. As one of the many examples, in the last few minutes of this final episode, the writers beautifully summed up the love story of LG and MY through a hand-written children’s book that is read by LG to his twins as MY listens. FTLY writers, you're awesome!

Thank you again to HeadsNo2 and gummimochi for providing us the episode recaps and their insightful comments. May you get to recap more wonderful and unforgettable dramas in the future!

Last but not least, Thank you to the writers, director, actors and all those who helped make my favorite drama of the year, that is, “Fated to Love You”!

Seconded re: the supporting cast. I was really surprised to find myself getting so fond of, not just Mi-young's mother (finally!!! a kdrama with good parent figures for both leads!!!!!!!!) but Yong!

His relationship with Mi-young (and later with Gun and the "dragon" fire-shooting, haha) was among the most touching things in the drama for me, where I expected him to be just comic relief but he was so much more. Same with his heartbreak over finding out that he's not really Gun's biological half-brother, and the way Gun and Mi-young treat him after that (and in this episode, his surprise and gratitude when Grandma Wang shows up to his meeting with the future in-laws because he's still her grandson).

You know the scene which made me fall hook, line, and sinker for the show? Gun entertaining his contract-mother-in-law and her friends at the wedding, and doing it from his heart. Then, despite being given an out by Mi-young, he CHOSE to stay and dragged her into the fun. And the man gets rewarded at the end of it all by getting a mother who loves him with her whole heart, not a sycophantic mother-in-law who loves her son-in-law because he's rich and did her a favour by marrying her poor unaccomplished daughter. In all my (admittedly limited) K-drama experience, I've never seen anything like it- a son-in-law who actually EARNS his in-laws' love and respect. We see the heroines do it all the time, and I loved watching the hero do it for a change, just because he wanted to. How awesome is that? Yes the scene was fun and made me love Gun, but more than that, it is a testimony to the innate decency of the the characters, which definitely got to my jaded heart.

Love that scene too! How can I forget and not love the Snail couple's singing and dancing while MY's tambourine was in unison with LG's hair. LOL. Yes, yes, the characters in this drama, lead or not, are all adorable and likable if not lovable. Thanks to FTLY writers, for creating such wonderful characters. I wonder what's the next project for the FTLY writers. Do you know? In the meantime, Cheers!

Not to diminish the great scenes, but I believe there's a earlier version of son in law and mother in law great interaction- Binnie in MNIKSS i.ytimg.com/vi/hpwvfJPCtvg/hqdefault.jpg Classic LOL scene( it made me squirm the first time I saw it)

0

@cingdoc: Thanks for telling me that. Like I said, my K-drama experience is extremely limited (I just started earlier this year with a YFAS marathon) and it's good to know that there are other shows which have lovable interactions like in FTLY. Most dramas I've seen treat the female characters pretty terribly, and can be difficult to enjoy if you haven't turned off this 'but why did she bear it?' switch in your head. I've heard a lot of praise for MNIKSS, but haven't got around to watching it yet. Reading your comment makes me want to. :)

0

@Boxed-in. Oh. My. God.

My Name is Kim Sam-soon. Must. Watch. Must. Watch.

Extremely fun. Extremely funny. Although tonally very different from Fated. Wouldn't watch it for Hyun Bin, although I would say he does the I-am-a-man-therefore-I-must-be-an-asshole role fairly well. Kim Sun-ah, on the other hand, manages to carry the entire show on her pudgy little frame.

Kim Sun-ah is the queeeeeeeeen of comedy.

Since you are still a newbie in drama waters, Boxed-in, it's also never too good a thing to be a k-drama fan and NOT have watched Coffee Prince. *blasphemy* Succumb to the pressure and confirm. :)

0

whoops. i meant conform. not confirm. there goes all attempt at trying to be miss smartypantness down the drain. :P

0

Jhu, I've heard lots about both MNIKSS and Coffee Prince, and almost all have been good things. In fact I did start watching CP, then got sidetracked somehow and never came back. Will get back to it some day. As for MNIKSS, hmm, I confess I've been reluctant to watch it because I've already seen Hyun Bin do the 'rich arrogant asshole' thing in Secret Garden and am just not too keen on watching his younger self reprise that role. 'Coz no matter how addictive Kim Joo-won was, he was also infuriating as hell. But I'm always up for funny, sassy heroines, so I will definitely give it a go sometime.

Not right now though. I desperately need a break from romantic fare. Not to mention that the fresh-from-FTLY me will definitely compare the Jangs' fantastic chemistry with the other pairs, and that's just calling for disappointment.

So I'm going down the dark path for now. Someone recommended Bridal Mask to me. That's probably next.

0

Boxed-In, also try Heartless City. Its very good and dark

I just realized i have put MNIKSS on my to-watch for list for aeons without actually seeing it. That must be remedied.
I highly recommend Coffee Prince whenever you get around finishing it. Its undoubted strongest point was the acting which was just stellar particularly Gong Yoo's.

As for Secret Garden, i know its beloved by so many but for me, Hyun Bin was such an ABSOLUTE ASS that i could never fall in love with the show totally

0

@ Jhu, hehe, we are all good enablers when it comes to kdrama addiction ;)

@ Boxed-In Binnie's character in MNIKSS was a misunderstood chaebol vs SG arrogant kind. And, yes, KSA was the star in the drama( so much so I couldn't watch her recent drama since they totally wasted her talent). So, please give this classic a try ( and if you have a sweet tooth, MNIKSS delivers- both in HOT men and food :)

0

@panda: Heartless City. Hadn't heard of that one. Will check it out.

As for Hyun Bin in SG, I confess that for all his assholiness, I found him immensely entertaining somehow. It was the female lead who really got on my nerves mid-drama onwards. As long as MNIKSS doesn't have that, I'm in.

@cingdoc: Stop. Tempting. Me. I'm on a diet after the sugar-overload of FTLY. :(

0

Oh, Heartless City is Daebak. I highly recommend it. Its dark and gritty and it will hook you particularly as you want a palate cleanser.

As for SG, i liked it but it's not one of my favorites by a lon shot. I have never re-watched it which i do all my favs. Apart from my grouse with the lead actor, the female lead was also written very inconsistently.

Sometimes, some things just taught you unexpected life lessons. Even if it is from a mere korean drama. Even if it is from a mere rom-com.

To live for the moment, with every step you take is for the better of your future. Every decision has its own outcome, taking into consideration that you are doing it for yourself and the people you love most.

To Jang Hyuk, for the intense loving gazes, eccentric laughs, you made acting seem so easy with the love flowing around, binding us with you and being sad when it ends.

To Jang Na Ra, how come a 33 year old looked as young as you? Your tears flowed like you are made for heart breaking scenes, those innocent 'thank you-s' are just your trademark. Soft but strong inside.

Been following both of you since your first drama together. The first kdrama that made me a kdrama addict now, your chemistry are so palpable that it sparked and I glee every time your scenes came up. Thank you for making us a part of this. Thank God for the Snail couple. Relationship Goal : Snail level (minus noble idiocy)

Fated to Love You writer-nims, thank you for making this one of the most beautiful rom-com ever. You have done justice to these 2 actors abilities, I am proud to watch from the get-go till the end. Dramabeans FTLY recappers Gummi & Heads, as well as the commentators, thank you.

Lee Gun and Kim Mi Young, both of you stole my heart. This will be a drama I will keep repeating til I have gray hairs, I am sure of it.

Much love,
Jjangs No 1 Super Fan.

So this is my first time commenting on any drama blog or any online forum in general. However, my love for this drama has usurped my desire to remain a silent lurker and I have resigned myself to comment! He he. :)

As I said, I LOVE this drama. I too was reminded why I feel in love dramas in the first place and this drama affected me in ways that no other has been able to do.

I know that many of you had a problem with the angst portion of the drama, but I have to say that I really didn't. Although it was slower than the first part, I really appreciated it. I understood it. Even though I didn't agree with the decision that gun made I understood why he made it. I understood his pain and guilt and why he felt he didn't deserve to go back to her. And I actually respected the character more that he stood firm in his decision. I mean at least he statyed consistent in his bad decision making! lol not to mention how often do we get to see the female save the male in a drama? I just loved how they did that!

Also, even though the angst really broke my heart, and believe me it did, I still found something so beautiful in it. Because within that sadness and heartbreak there was interlaced so much love and heart. There wasn't a moment in this drama where I didn't feel the otp's connection to each other. It was palpable to me at all times and I don't know if I've ever experienced that before in a drama.

Additionally, I have to respectfully disagree that the three year separation was pointless. Yes it's true that mi young would have ultimately made same decision, but I do think after the three years she was better equipped to handle the consequences of that decision. The three years was HUGE for mi youngs character growth. I mean if you really think about it she went from a girl who couldnt bare to disappoint anyone to a strong confident woman who was ready to fight for her man in front of a whole slew of reports no less! That to me is pretty incredible.

Lastly, I wanted to address the hd. I know a lot of people didn't like this aspect of the show, but honestly even in the first episodes we were given hints of it so I didn't feel like it came out of nowhere. Also, I think this trope actually did help me to increase my understanding of gun. Because really it wasn't so much about the hd itself but rather gun's irrational fear of the hd. And even in that irrational fear he was still motivated by love. Sure he made the wrong decision but with good intentions nonetheless. I think that really speaks to the consistency of his character.

Anyways, I could ramble on forever about this show. I just wanted to say how great of a ride it's been for me! Fated has won me heart and soul! And I love it until the stars disappear! Lol. Thanks for the recaps and everyone else your wonderful comments!

Thank you much for sharing your wonderful thoughts on this lovely drama.

Me too, I did not mind the angsty episodes because in them the writers still showed us, as you said, the beautiful connection between LG and MY. I love their text message exchanges. And for me, in watching those angsty episode, the more I felt the love between LG and MY. Who said that we can only show our love during happy times?

I agree with you also on the 3 years separation's purpose. It did enable the growth in LG and MY's characters, paving the way for our Snail couple's fight for their love.

I too was not bothered by the HD disease becoming a game changer in this drama's story, because it not only showed how much LG love MY and Kedonggie but it also gave us an understanding of what LG's father went through...This reminds me that while this drama's main focus is on the Snail couple's love story, it wonderfully also portrayed the unconditional love we receive from our families. Kudos to the FTLY writers!

Thanks again for your thoughts on this drama. Hopefully, there is another lovely and unforgettable drama in the near future for all of us to share our thoughts.

I totally agree with you, Heads - this drama is a lovely reminder of just what a good drama can do for you, and a breath of fresh air after a solid six months of disappointing network-tv fare. Sure it's not perfect, but what it does right more than makes up for the flaws to me (even if the noble idiocy was the big screeching clunker in the middle).

Above all, it's a timely reminder of just how great Korean romcoms can be, when they remember the 'rom' and 'com' parts of things - like Master's Sun last year, the imperfections of the drama (somewhat more glaring in this case) were largely made up for by an inspired cast and perfectly chosen leads - Jang Hyuk may have stolen the show with The Laugh, but his brand of crazy would never have worked if it wasn't for the grounding influence of a far subtler performance by Jang Nara. Much like Gong Hyo-jin last year, she's a great choice to anchor the larger-than-life quality of her male lead, while doing a champion job with her own performance. I'm totally snail-phobic in real life, but this snail is my favourite!

Most important, I have to ask Heads - is The Curse of the Recaps finally broken?!

Ahhhhhhhhhh its over T__T Beautiful drama.
Ok obviously is not the best drama of the world, but for me was very special, it was one of those weird dramas which hooks you since the first episode and keep you impatience waiting for a new one, this doesn't happen very often, at least not for me but this year I had two ^_^ now my wednesday and thursday will be incomplete again :´(
I think everybody agrees this drama came down till the end, it wasn't the same I loved the first 10 episodes but at that point I was so invested on my snail couple to giving up.
Gun at first was a great character but it turned so depressed into many episodes and at the end was just the shadow of the Gunnie I loved, this of course has nothing to do with Jang Hyuk's portrayal he was perfect, I feel bad to discover him now, how many great moments I lost with this good actor?, those eyes showed so many unspoken words, the pain and the love... wow I'm in love with those eyes and that voice it brings chills to my arms xD the good thing about this is that I have so many shows to help me to get over this drama I already miss T__T

In the other hand Mi Young was amazing from the begining to the end, I never though of her as a weak woman, love everything about her, her personality, her strenght, her pain and her love, she lacked just one thing, to give Gun a painful punch in his blue balls, besides that she's perfect. Another Jang Nara' character I liked.

Love so many things about this drama it will be difficul to name, just a few.
-The analogies for the sexy times
-Dragon Yong
-Secretary Tak
-Gun-Omma relationship
-The crazy laugh (mmm the last episodes I didn't like it that much)
-The chemistry, wooooow, the Jjangs just fill the screen with their prescences

Realy going to miss my snail couple, just for them this drama is at my ten top and the couple as one of the best!!!!

Thank you Gummi and Heads, my drama experience is incomplete if I don't have a recap, and I appreciate the effort, the speed and the insightful comments even if I don't agree all the time.

Thank you all of you guys who leave a comment, I'm so lazy to analize a drama the way you do and my english isn't that good =P, I love to read your thoughts special thanks to: Boxed-In, Jhu, Logan5, Panda and Samsooki you give another perspective and calmed me down when I was angry or dissapointed with the show

Glass! What a lovely post! I can totally relate to your finding faults with the show and still finding it special. It is the same for me too.

And like you, I never, ever, ever thought Jang Nara's Mi-young was weak or a pushover or needed a personality makeover. She was always bold and brave. A princess right from the very beginning.

And aww. Thank you for reading and enjoying our comments. I think collective love is the name of the game as far as Fated is concerned. I've crawled out of my shell and opened my arms and found great companions through the show. Am so happy to know you were part of it too.

I didn't read all the comments but I didn't agree with the analysis of the 3 year hiatus. It was necessary for the heroine's self-development. Without it - it would have been weird for her to 'suddenly" get a spine -- which made the return so much fun and such a good drama.

Thanks HeadNo2 and Gummimochi for recapping Fated To Love You!

The axiom "Everything old is new again" certainly applies here. As a spectator of both the Taiwanese and Korean versions of Fated to Love, I feel fortunate to have had the chance to watch both - it is the best of both worlds. This version of FTLY with the 2 Jangs :) ; the comedy and meta references; the beautiful color palettes and schemes; and even during its moments of grief and angst - this drama kindled in me all the feels for why I originally fell in love with and became a fan of kdramas.

Like others have mentioned, Daniel and Nam Se-Ra were underdeveloped as secondary characters and their storyline of a long lost brother and sister reuniting was surely lacking.

I loved this drama. Even the angst part--it never felt too sad (though I did cry a lot) or stupid. I always felt like that was a very real worry that Gun had fueled by the fact that he just did not want to become like his father (and grandfathers) and leave the people he loved behind out of the blue. He just thought controlling when he could leave was the best option (even though it was not). He was exactly like his father, though, and I liked that reveal and the lesson he got from it, even though it came a bit earlier from Mi Young.

I really love Mi Young, too. And Jang Nara did just as splendid a job as Joe Chen did just like I thought! I really liked all of characters (save Se Ra's mom).

For me, I think this was great through and through with lots of laughs and heart and the sadder second half didn't feel like a disappointment at all. I liked the neat little bows and the happy-hour of the last episode, too.

Fated to Love You Korean version was great...I do hope for those who have not seen the original version will check it out - 2008 Taiwanese drama Fated to Love You. I would encourage you to remember it was completed in 2008 vs. 2014...and it is easier to make adaptions of things you did not like in the original in a rewrite. But I think they both have there charms and there were elements from the 2008 Taiwanese drama that I wish was included in this one. It is not often that Taiwanese dramas are made into Korean dramas...so the original must be a little special.

Thanks again for the recap of a great romcom.

I love this drama. And I totally agree with HeadsNo2 that who cares what happened to Lawyer Hong. What the writers should have done are the following:
1. Give us a recap of what happened in those three years MY and LG were apart- how LG refused all marriage meeting, surveillance on MY's activities and whereabouts
2. Going back to the scene where MY lost her baby and finally do a closure for Dog Poopie
3. LG introduce MY to his father and mother (ashes).
4. Shoe MY with her pregnant belly.
5. LG going through this pregnancy with wife and again the morning sickness- that would be CUTE!
6. LG frantic when MY's time to give birth--THAT would have been a very funny scene- would show how much LG cared for MY. (would rather have this than the picnic scene at the end)
7. Show the final product of MY painting of LG
8. LG and Daniel coming to terms
9. MY and LG going back to LG's house
10. A family scene (dinning room) where MY is actually the one taking of LG, and not only LG caring for MY.
11. Update on the actual and fake divorce papers.

The cartoonist of the act of sex in this drama is so funny. I just cannot understand why they would let LG not enjoy the first honeymoon night fully conscious. But then again, I cannot blame Madame Wang. MY looks like she wouldn't have initiated any sexy moment!! No negligee for the honeymoon night? And making plans to work after only 3 days of honeymoon.? AW com'on! After three years of being separated, This is unbelievable!

PS did somebody notice Gun was actually kissing MY with eyes open in their second honeymoon night. Like he wanted to see MY's reaction.

in general, this version still beats the Taiwan version hand over fist. Of that there's no doubt. Better actors, better execution and better production.

Where this the Original wins, however, was in the second act. What I was desperately hoping for and what I truly do believe would have turned this show into a grand slam (instead of just a ground rule double RBI) ... was what the original did well ... and that was show in the second act, the lead male character upon realizing that he still very much loved her, pulled out all the stops to try and win her back.

Think about it ... instead of just Agent Tak and Agent Yong appearing in the final episodes, we could have had them both working for Gun from episodes 14 on ... Sure, we could have had our obligatory Nobel Idiocy for a while, but if Gun had gotten his father's diary sooner, telling him that living in the now and loving in the now will always be better for the people you love than to "sacrifice" love for them ... he could have kicked off operation "Retrieve Snail" and we could have all laughed our way through weeks of watching loveable Gun do his level best to win back the heart of his true love.

But ... I won't complain ... because in the scheme of things, this show was still heads and tails better than many I've seen. So, when the days are long ... and the wife and I feel like marathoning an "old" drama ... we'll watch episodes 1-10 and then skip to 17-20 ...

In closing ... I can easily count the number of better shows ... but it wouldn't take all ten fingers to do so. And while this show easily makes my top 10 ... this duo of Jang and Jang make my top three.

Hahaha. I love this alternate version of events. So much in keeping with the mood of the first half and the rom-comic theme in general. And it would totally have been a hoot to watch.

On the other hand, I do think the writers were deliberately going for 'Mi-young rescues Gun' rather than 'Gun chases Mi-young' in the second half. Perhaps a conscious effort to reverse the 'Gun rescues Mi-young' theme in the first ten episodes? It sure made for less satisfactory drama-watching by turning it rather maudlin, and provoked boatloads of anger and tears, but I will always appreciate the effort to give the heroine more agency.

Still want someone to remake the second half with your plot though. I miss all the laughs we never got. :D

This may be trivial, but I'm curious if anyone else picked up on this: it seemed to me that for someone who's so much in love, MY didn't seem very enthusiastic about her honeymoon. First of all, she cuts it short - only three days??? - because of work, she's an established artist who could easily revise her schedule and start a new project a week or two later. And once they get to the hotel, you'd think after all that time apart they'd be in bed right away, but she makes the excuse that it's still daytine? She never heard of closing curtains? Later that evening, I can't help wondering, now that the sun was going down, if she deliberately picked a fight and went off in a temper because why was she so pissed? If anything, she should have been flattered that he couldn't stay away from her despite his decision and followed her around a bit. Besides, he did have a point: why did she have no problem doing a love shot with Daniel and then got all prim and proper about doing the same thing with her husband? If those cocktails hadn't been drugged, would she have asked for a separate room?

Wonder if she just endured it so she could have the twins?

LOL
I felt Sera show much more passion towards Lee Gun than Mi Young even when we don't get much romantic scene between them... ... It's bothers me abit.. The only time I was felt she is showing so much passion towards him is in press con kiss and towards the end of episode 18... when she had tears that she can't believe now Lee Gun is hers...
(I saw episode 20 preview and there is actually a back huge scene that shows Mi Young's excitement honeymoon with Lee Gun.Why get cuts? Gah.. such an important scene)

Do they really want to potrayed Mi Young as a woman who are really love to play hard to get games card?

I love this drama, this may be the first time that I hope for a news about drama extension. But yes, even without extension, this last episode already feels like extension rather than a planned drama finale. But because it is filled with so much cuteness, but nobody is complaining.

To me personally, the drama ended on episode 18, the reconciliation episode is the peak of this drama. After that the pace and the conflict is kinda free fall; And maybe its the hairstyle, but Lee Gun look sooo tired on the last two episodes. I wished they kept his hairstyle like the separation era...

Another thing I want to see more is actually bromance between Lee Gun and D. Pitt... in the first episode D. Pitt has a quite familiar relationship with grandma Wang, but then we never been explained what it was.. and why Lee Gun doesn't know him. The siblings arch is also executed a bit flat. I wouldn't complain for a more drama on that. Se Ra lost at the age, what? 5? Why she doesn't remember that she has a brother? that kinda bother me also.

But for what is worth... I really appreciate the drama team for creating a wonderful drama. FTLY is the drama that can make me watch live, waiting patiently for each episode every week; my addiction just got to a whole new level.

I love love love this drama but I can't help but feel that it would have been better if they didn't have to live shoot and the cast could sleep. And the script and editing had time for polishing. I thought LG looked exhausted too and JH did mention in an interview that he was glad he could sleep now that the drama was over.
I loved this drama for giving me all the 2 episodes of cute "happily ever after" stuff when most romcoms would end at episode 18. But the quality of the last two episodes were glaringly sloppy compared to the first ten and I blame it on the live shoot. I really wish Korea would do something about this system that continuously gives us these wonderful dramas that end with sloppy finales with actors looking exhausted.

I do not know. It looks like episode 19 and 20 was not written by the main writer? I still can't sleep without thinking of "what if..." Lots of wasted time that could have been given to Gunnnie to actually propose to MY. Because if Gunnie really have the competitive spirit, he would not settle and end the show without him being the best. He even mentioned that he saw MY and Daniel doing a love shot, so he wanted one too. He heard about the ramen with pollack eye from brother- Yong and he wanted to have one too.

And what's with their dialogue? MY is just repeating what Gun is saying.!

I started watching this drama a month ago cause for 1, I didnt understand why the remake (esp since the tw version was v draggy). More importantly, i didnt get Gunnie's laughter. It was annoying. But as it was being aired on my cable, i was hooked. The snail couple grew on me and i have to say there were moments i laughed really hard and moments where I cried buckets of tears. I love that this drama ended on a good note. It gave enough screen time for the couple (not that we are gonna gave enough of it). Cause most drama just dedicate 10 mins of screen time to end the drama.
My only comment would be i wished they had shown the process of MY's pregnancy and how LG supported her through instead of fastforwarding to 3 yrs. I love LG for his small little acts of love for MY that makes up the big picture.
I always believe that for a relationship to work, both parties need to be able to support one another. While LG was the CEO, MY secretly supported him by making him lunch. And when MY became famous as an artist, LG was proud of her work and never fail to let her shine in her own way. Both of them never once asked the other whose work is more impt cause they both knew that no matter what happens or how busy they are, their relationship is the most impt thing ever.
I am so glad that there arent any bad characters. SR and DP did love LG and MY but their love was not meant to be. Love can come in many forms but sadly for their case, its not the one they want. I mean LG and SR could b together and DP and MY could b together, but their love for one another will only be lukewarm. Which in the end is better for all of them to b jus friends. Thankfully DP and SR found one another as siblings.
As always, Thank you for recapping and allowing us to comment.

I hardly ever comment and usually lurk but I have LOVED this drama like no other. It's definitely in my top 3 rom-coms, the other two being "The Greatest Love" and "My Name is Kim Sam Soon." I was eagerly waiting for Wednesday every week for the past 2+ months! I'm going to miss watching the adorable LG and KMY :(

I really liked Heads' analysis of how the latter half of why the latter half of the drama lost its appeal and didn't quite live up to the promise of the first half. BUT, that said, what ultimately made me still love it is the superb acting by both leads -- both KMY and LG felt so real. I was too fully invested in the characters and their relationship to let it go. So even though the angsty episodes lasted about 1-2 episodes too long (15-17, I actually loved 13, and the texting scenes in 14 were good too), I still love this drama. And I loved loved loved their reunion in episode 18. The last two episodes didn't feel like filler to me. I totally agree with everyone else that it's better to have more time seeing our couple together and happy than just 10 minutes to wrap it up.

By the way, I have a theory of why LG's hair changed in the last two episodes. What do you guys think?: At the end of episode 12, when MY was leaving for Paris with D. Pitt, there are some flashback scenes of her happy times with LG and why she thinks it's not meant to be. It wasn't clear to me if she was reminiscing about times they shared or if it was a "it would have been nice" montage. Anyway, in one of those scenes there is one where it shows her washing his long, floppy hair. So my theory is, in episodes 9-10, when they are happy together, MY must have been washing LG's hair! That's why it was so floppy and unstyled. :) And then in the last two episodes, after they started living together in Ji Yun's home, she did the same thing. Hahahaha. :)

This is the first time I've seen either Jang Hyuk or Jang Nara in anything and I'm such a fan now, especially of Jang Hyuk. I'm blown away by his acting (and his hotness). What else should I watch of his? People have mentioned Chuno, Thank You, Tree with Deep Roots. Anything else? What about for Jang Nara?

Will dearly miss you, Fated to Love you! Thank goodness for the awesome recaps by Heads and Gummi that I can return to anytime.

I wouldn't over-think the ending too much, I think it was okay. The drama is not the smartest out there, but I think it did its job of giving us that pleasant giddy feeling a good rom can give.

And it's way better than the Taiwanese version, did you see the ending on that one? It was ridiculous!

Luv this show! Still smiling remembering how cute it is.

The lover is ever drunk with love.
She is free, he is mad,
She sings with delight
As he dances in ecstasy.

Caught by our own thoughts,
We worry about everything.
But once you get drunk on that love.
Whatever will be, will be…

While watching FTLY I couldn't help feeling a sense of Deja Vu...where have I seen this before? Not the first episodes, but the middle ones, it was like "I KNOW I've seen something like this before"...then I got it!! I believe the writers were inspired by an old US movie, "An Affair To Remember", starring Deborah Kerr and Cary Grant. In this story, it's CG who's the artist and DK's the noble idiot. They meet aboard ship, fall in love, but there's compiications: they're bothe engaged to others, CG is the heir to a wealthy, socially prominent family, and DK's fiance is a millionaire businessman. They decide to take six months to sort their lives out, then meet at the top of the Empire State Bldg, for their HEA. Sadly, DK is hit by a car and is paralyzed. Not wanting to be a burden to CG, she lets him believe she want back to her fiance, and - heartbroken - he leaves for Europe to pursue the artistic career he always wanted. Later, he becomes famous and his most beloved portrait is one of her, which she secretly buys, proud of his success and longing for him, but continuing her noble idiocy: she won't tell him the truth unless she can stand on her own two feet, NOT in a wheelchair! When they meet for the first time after the long separation, she (she's sitting down in a theatre so he doesn't know she can't walk) gives the impression she's fine, moved on and is over him though her heart is breaking inside. I won't give the ending away, but I do want to add, that there was a beloved grandmother in this picture, who very much wanted her grandson to settle down with the right girl and start a family.

Sound familiar???

Sometimes, some things just taught you unexpected life lessons. Even if it is from a mere korean drama. Even if it is from a mere rom-com.

To live for the moment, with every step you take is for the better of your future. Every decision has its own outcome, taking into consideration that you are doing it for yourself and the people you love most.

To Jang Hyuk, for the intense loving gazes, eccentric laughs, you made acting seem so easy with the love flowing around, binding us with you and being sad when it ends.

To Jang Na Ra, how come a 33 year old looked as young as you? Your tears flowed like you are made for heart breaking scenes, those innocent 'thank you-s' are just your trademark, but never be fooled, you are a heck of an actress.

Been following both of you since your first drama together. The first KDrama that made me a KD-addict now; your chemistry are so palpable that it sparked and I glee every time your scenes came up in FTLY. Thank you for making us a part of this. Relationship goal : Snail Couple!

FTLY writer-nims, thank you for making this one of the most beautiful rom-com ever. You have done justice to these 2 actors abilities, I am proud to watch from the get-go till the end. Thank you recappers Gummi & Heads for your witty choice of words who had made me refreshing DB to read and grin like a fool I am. Thank you to all of the commentators here who share the same misery knowing FTLY is coming to an end.

I knew this would be THE bomb when I saw JH & JNR to be teamed up again, and I am SUPER glad I did watch FTLY. Lee Gun and Kim Mi Young, both of you stole my heart. This will be a drama I will keep repeating til I have gray hairs, I am sure of it.

Much love,
Jjangs No 1 Super Fan.

First of all I wanted to thank HeadsNo2 and Gummimochi for recapping this beautiful drama! For me it took my heart the first place in all rom-com drama that I have watched in the past, good luck to all the promising writers, PDs, actors and staff. Even Coffee Price is one of my top, but I'm sorry to say that FTLY Korean version just took it home straight in the bottom of my heart!
I can compare to my favorite American author Judith Mc Naught. The story is well written plus the amazing chemistry, acting and directing! Hands up raise the roof! It was so detailed!!!! Especially all the expression of JH and JNR, but I think all the characters revolving around this drama I fantastic! You can say that it's was not cheap to the point that they have live shooting, it looks like they are not shooting in a studio, unless there is a CF scene involve. The comedy factor is fantastic! I think I just fall in love with Gun's character, even though some people might see him like a mad person because of his laughter, plus his regular visit to his psychologist thinking that there is something wrong with him! They really made the snail shine this time! I love they way he say in his perfect baritone voice "my snail" oh my lord my heart started thumping. Even until Hamo-Hamo character is very significant until the end! MY's mum, grandma Wang, secretary Tak, Yong and Ji Jeon, Daniel and Sera, even the lawyer! It's very refreshing to see a drama that uses classical ingredients but yet they made no evil character in the series, for me it's not boring, I think it's amazing. Aghast time is just perfect, I really love Gun's character, for me he is not noble idiot as MOST of everyone called him, has just selfless man with the aim of giving us his happiness just to let the woman he love suffer because of his so called "illness"
I love how MY is the one who chases him back? Otherwise his character will be having inconsistency. I'm glad that Mi Young step up to fight for her love. Gun and Mi young is just perfect for each other!
Like I said I feel like I'm reading Judith Mc Naught novel, very heartwarming with wittiness and fun! One night stand pregnancy, miscarriage then separation PARADISE. Having twins! DOUBLE STANDARD. Chebol fall in love to innocent girl, WHITNEY MY LOVE, amnesia, UNTIL YOU. Hahaha. Love FTLY!

So, I ended up "marathoning" the last two episodes on Thursday night because, literally, this show was putting me to sleep when I tried to watch episode 19 on Wednesday. I've never been so bored by I show I loved so much. I'ma just be over here pretending that FTLY ended 3 episodes ago. I just cannot forgive an finale who's main point of conflict was making sure that a newlywed couple has sex ON THEIR WEDDING NIGHT!

That said... I agree with everyone that, for the sake of the near perfect first half, and the amazing-ness of the OTP, I will forever love Fated. Had it Brought It a little bit stronger in the second half, this would definitely be my Drama of the Year but I've got to give it to Marriage, Not Dating instead because that show only made me spend one week screaming "What is wrong with you people?" instead of three and a half.

It got so bad at the end that I can't even say I'm gonna miss it, which is sad because I love this show and it deserves to be missed.

I *loved* this show, but yes there was definitely a steep drop-off in the last 2 eps. Particularly in the last ep I was really disturbed by the Macau Revival thing. I mean, it's one thing to do it in the first place but to knowingly and purposely follow around your boss/friend/brother/sister-in-law on their HONEYMOON to drug them so they'll have sex... even my suspension of disbelief was not enough for me to get quite comfortable with that.

And speaking of comfortable: Most. Awkward. Sex. Scene. Ever. Has JN ever done a sex scene before? Granted I would do extremely non-PG-rated things to Jang Hyuk if I had my chance but the complete froideur of JN was really hard to take. At least move your head when your man kisses your neck! Especially one who looks like that!

I'll watch the show again, probably, in the background while I do other stuff, just like I do with my other favorites, but it'll probably be eps 1-10 (the first half), probably not 10-20.

Thanks for all the great recaps!

I commented on this before and I'm thinking now that maybe JN isn't comfortable doing love scenes so it was deliberately toned down? But still...from a storyline standpoint, it doesn't make sense at all. Living together, sleeping in the same bed???? I saw a Taiwan drama where an engaged couple lived together and she wanted to wait until marriage, but they each had their own bedroom. Maybe she really needs those drugged cocktails!

Hope this doesn't sound ridiculous, but a lot of people want to see JH and JNR in another series and I started thinking up a storyline for a historical drama that seems right for them. Where could I pitch this idea, any particular website?

I thoroughly enjoyed the fluffiness of this episode and the high notes the series ended on. The drugging of the drinks struck an extremely sour note for me, though. Not cool, writers. Not cool.

I agree that the majority of the angst was totally unnecessary, and, honestly, a shorter series in which Gun did the adult thing two or three episodes earlier and was honest with Mi-young would have been better (YMMV).

I am super thankful that I got to watch Jang Hyuk oppa and Jang Nara unnie together again in Fated To Love You!!! It was an honor seeing the two Jangs in one screen again for so long a time. Their chemistry was undeniably palpable in that every scene, whether quirky or sad, gave out the most realistic feel as they portray their respective characters Lee Gun & Kim Mi Young. The rapport between the two of them and even with the other casts was so unique that it felt like they were a true family on set. FTLY tugged each and every viewers hearts (including me!) and for sure will be remembered by all!

I will definitely miss FTLY and of course our Snail couple/Jang couple!!! I hope to see them again soon, maybe in a drama, movie or variety show perhaps?!?! Just a simple wish for an avid shipper! ^^

Thank you Dramabeans especially to headsno2 and gummimochi for the wonderful recaps! My journey with FTLY would not be as exciting without your hard work and talent, so until the day the stars disappear in the sky, I will always be a fan of this blog! ;)

FTLY has now climbed up to the top of my fave kdramas of all time! It may not be that perfect but the little flaws could not change the fact that the drama in entirety was FATED to be loved by all! =)

I didn't realize the two Jangs had acted together before. Came across 2002 Kdrama "Successful Story of a Bright Girl" (or "Bright Girl's Success" or "Lovely Girl"). Has anyone seen this?

Cannot praise Windstruck enough. See it if you haven't! I didn't find it at Netflix, found on youtube.

Yes, I did, revlow. It was my VERY FIRST KDrama. 12 years ago, KDrama was so new, everyone in Asia was actually so into JDorama instead of the Korean series. I remembered and even memorized 2 of the main OST in "Successful Story of a Bright Girl" >..< I'm just having a bad case of withdrawal symptoms after FTLY ended. I just missed them so dearly.

oh no, i wonder how to edit my comment! gahhh.

I meant to say: Yes, I did, revlow. It was my VERY FIRST KDrama. 12 years ago, KDrama was so new, everyone in Asia was actually so into JDorama instead of the Korean series. I remembered and even memorized 2 of the main OST in "Successful Story of a Bright Girl" teehee.

It was obviously cheesy, but the Jjangs' chemistry was already there, even if its not as smoldering hot like in FTLY. JH was in fact the same bratty CEO in a cosmetic company, I guess Lee Gun's character in FTLY is literally a rebirth of Han Gi-Tae in SSOABG. JNR was a feisty little country girl who was going through a lot of things because of her parents. SSOABG was quite fun (although draggy and snaily slow), but I loved these 2 so much that I decided to watch til the end.

I was surprised when JNR mentioned they (JH & JNR) had not even keep in contact, they were not even speaking to each other outside the shooting of SSOABG. But then JNR now said they are close than ever, JH is considered as someone very dear to her now, JH thought the same too. I loved the idea of this reunion. FTLY rekindled the relationship they previously had into something more magical.

They do not have anything else that they acted together in, sadly. FTLY is the first drama reuniting them both after those long 12 years.

Have a try to watch SSOABG, revlow. Who knows you might like it? ;)

p/s: I did rewatch the whole series of SSOABG when dreading for the last 2 FTLY episodes last week just to get a kick out of seeing this 2.
pp/s: You might also want to try JNR "Oh! Happy Days" & "Sky and Ocean" movies, "My Love Patzzi", "My Bratty Princess" (in Mandarin if I'm not mistaken). JH "Volcano High" movie was fun, "Tazza" & "Chuno" are his series that you cannot miss. Oh the praises about them are endless!

Sorry for being carried away! I'm just having a bad case of withdrawal symptoms after FTLY ended. I just missed them so dearly.

LOL. No! Do NOT apologize about getting carried away schizoellzee! :-) I had a hard time restraining myself -- usually I don't manage to. Thanks for ALL the feedback.

I loved this series. I'm jonesing myself. Throughout all of it I knew this was going into my list of favorite KDramas. At times heartbreaking, at times hysterical. It always amazes me how KDramas pull this off. Films, too. Windstruck is a perfect example of this.

A couple people mentioned JNR's singing of "Snail". I didn't know she was a singer, had a whole other career. Goes to show what I know. That too always amazes me when I learn an actor is an idol. Blows me away. Seems to be most of them. I'd purposely kept myself from listening to their music in the yr+ since I stumbled into KDrama. I didn't need one more obsession. I broke down recently. And yes... now I'm addicted to that.

"Snaily"... I like that! :-D

Thanks again!

PS. I youtubed JNR last night to hear "Snail". Wow! What a beautiful song. I had to **really** restrain myself from looking at her many other MVs at 4 in the morning. I did already watch one interview, plan to watch an episode of "Happy Together" where she's a guest. For those who don't know, this is one in the plethora of fun variety/ reality shows. (Search for Heechul and you're in for a real treat. He's a laugh riot. And don't miss Seo In-Guk on "Strong Heart"... adorable.)

So far I only watched the 1st video I came across of "Snail". I'm sure there are better -- and will watch them -- but this did have one of the things I look for nowadays: translated into both English and Romanized Korean. My neighbors must think I'm nuts as I play a song over and over again, trying to croak out the lyrics.

Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcdx4tEI0PM

Yeah, I haven't found a way to edit posts either. See what I mean about getting carried away? Me too! I prefer to see it as "sharing information" ;-)

Here I go again...

I should have said when I find out that **excellent** actors are also pop idols. Would be as if Justin Bieber had the acting chops of Colin Firth.

Seo In-Guk is an wonderful example. Does it seem like I'm obsessed with him? Yes I am, proudly so. Great actor, great singer.
