Hellmoni finalizes its cast, starts filming

I love it! Comedy movie Hellmoni (a fusion of the words “hell” and “halmoni,” the latter being the Korean word for grandmother) has finalized its cast, and the cameras have started rolling. The film, directed by Shin Han-sol (Dangerous Meeting), stars Kim Sumi (Incarnation of Money, also Dangerous Meeting), as a hell-raising halmoni with a penchant for profane language. She’s just so hilarious (she’s like a campy, over-the-top caricature of her own self) — I’m willing to bet good money she’ll be excellent in the role.

Hellmoni will center around Kim Sumi as a grandmother who relieves her stress by letting loose streams of obscenities. She’s got such a good sailor’s mouth, she even auditions for an epic national swearing battle (lol, I think I would be a damn qualified entrant if such an event actually existed). Comedy aside, it’s also supposed to be a touching family movie — we’ll watch the matriarch and her kin experience conflict and disagreements, but ultimately they’ll reconcile, the family bond stronger than ever.

Stepping into the role of eldest daughter-in-law is Lee Tae-ran (King’s Family). Her character is described as a bit lacking, but kind, and a good wife and mother (eyeroll #1534647). Jung Man-shik (Feel-Good Day, King of Dramas) is the most recent addition to the cast, and while we don’t know his part yet, I’m speculating he’s a family member (possibly the eldest son and Lee Tae-ran’s husband).

Lee Young-eun (To the Beautiful You) will play a producer for a local TV station, who determinedly searches for foul-mouthed entrants for the cussing competition. Hmmm, for a broadcast show, wouldn’t they have to use that bleep button like crazy? Luckily, this is the big screen, so we’ll be privy to every little expletive. Not that swear words are necessary for a good film, but with this premise, authenticity is key — and lol at the thought of Kim Sumi unleashing the verbal fury.

Production is underway and the movie is expected to be released at the end of the year.
