TV programming pre-empted for news coverage on downed ferry
by javabeans
If you haven’t yet heard the news, a South Korean ferry sank on Wednesday, April 16, while carrying 459 passengers from Seoul to Jeju Island, many of them high schoolers on a field trip. Currently rescue efforts are underway with nearly 300 people unaccounted for, and coverage of the disaster is dominating the media. For more detailed reports, you can read about it in English from BBC News or CNN.
Not to get our priorities backward, but that does also mean that the Wednesday dramas were all pre-empted this week due to the breaking news, so Three Days, Sly and Single Again, and Golden Cross broadcasts were all pushed back. Many of the non-prime-time dramas and variety programming was also pre-empted.
No word yet on programming decisions for tomorrow; I think it’s safe to say everyone’s attentions are fixed on more pressing worries. We’re sending all our wishes to the survivors and rescue workers.

This is truly sad for all the families and loved ones involved, especially the ones unaccounted for. How tragic it is that an exciting field trip ended up this way. We also had a terrible tragedy recently here in Northern California with a bus accident full of high school kids going to Humboldt College for a tour. As a parent myself, I feel so much for the parents and how stressful it must be not knowing if your child survived or not. All my prayers go out to the families and loved ones for those involved. And as someone posted up thread that we are also sharing in the nation's sadness, as much enjoyment that their entertainment brings to us.

I felt so sad reading the news. No thoughts even about the dramas. Everyone involved and everyone else in Korea will be so affected by it.
My thoughts and prayers go to the passengers and their families. They are all so young.
It is heartwarming to read how many fishing and commercial vessels helped rescue so many people.

Devastating news. Let's pray for God's protection and mercy to be upon those trapped to be found alive; for God's protection and guidance over the search and rescue teams to expeditiously rescue those trapped; and for God's faith and strength to be upon those waiting families, amen.

There are still so many people unaccounted for, but at least some are being rescued by the hour. I hope they're all save and just waiting to be rescued.

The latest as of 20 minutes ago is that some of the passengers still stuck in the sunken ship might be alive.

I really, really hope they find more survivors, or that by some freak chance there's an air pocket in the wreck where they're safe. This is incredibly sad.

There are no words to adequately describe how heartbreaking this is. I can't even imagine the horror and panic the parents of missing students must experiencing. I pray that the death toll from this tragedy isn't nearly so high as is currently anticipated. So so terribly sad...

As much as we want to blame someone for the tragedy, it won't make the situation any less tragic.
The captain is 69 yrs old (some articles said 68). He's a senior citizen, a grandpa basically. He was also just a civilian captain fill-in for the regular captain who was on vacation. Was he cowardly? Yes, most would say. But does a captain's job require him to risk his own to save others? It's different from a police officer, fire fighter, or other emergency-related occupation where that's expected. I've read posts where people have said he should have been the last one off. I wonder what these folks would have done in the same situation. The poor man's got a family too and wanted to live.
What he did do wrong was the evacuation process. But then, I would question the entity that gave him his license. Knowing how to drive a ship isn't the only skill necessary on the seas, but how to handle emergencies.
And it's so sad that the crew is being blamed (the 25 yr old woman, and another who was at the helm) when they were probably just taking orders from above. And who really is prepared for tragic emergencies such as this? No one. They were scared and ill-prepared. And again, I would have to question the licensing board's role in this, not the individuals.

The thing is, there is a long-standing tradition (in both tradition and maritime law) of captains going down with their ships — the captain is literally responsible for the lives of everyone on board; how can they not take responsibility for when things go south? So yes — it IS the captain's job to risk his own life to save others. Navy captains and other officers have been quoted as saying that this captain is a disgrace to the maritime industry and to anybody who has EVER been given a position on a ship.
To be more specific, actually, in South Korea, this code (which in other countries is more long-standing tradition) is actually a legal law, which is why he is being legally and socially blamed.
This isn't even taking into account reports of crew members & the captain literally *preventing* people from evacuating.

This is such a horrific tragedy...my heartfelt condolences to the families of both the missing and the survivors. I'm keeping them in my prayers, and I really hope that there is some progress in rescuing the missing...ugh, I can't even imagine the heartbreak and anguish these families and parents are going through. Read about the little girl they rescued, whose parents and brother are still missing...so so incredibly sad :'(
It made me super upset to hear that the captain and most of the crew abandoned ship, while telling the KIDS to continue staying where they were!! >:x How I'd like to make them submit to torture and quartering, saguek-style...and I bet most people would agree.
And honestly, this infinitely outweighs mere dramas/variety shows...

Apparently, according to YTN, the captain was one of the first two or three people to get off the ship.
I see on the news that some divers from one of my old US Navy units is on the scene, but apparently not much they can do given the conditions.

He was not a "Captain" He was really a "A-Hole" This A-hole bailed and did not give a !!! about the responsibility of the passengers. A crew member gave her life trying to save passengers. They should place a suicide watch on this A-hole before he tries a easy way out!

How can the students wearing life vests still have time to text home but can't jump out to the water or get up to the water? They must get locked or stuck for some reasons like someone said. Where are the teachers or chaperons? I have travelled many places and I found that other countries in Asia, Europe, etc ... actually do not care about people safety and even people is careless. I have to even bring my own life vest when I travel places.
