Book giveaway: To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han

This is a little out of the ordinary for us here at Dramabeans, but we thought we’d offer it up to you guys anyway: We have three copies to give away of a young adult novel, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, written by Korean-American author (and drama fan) Jenny Han, which features a Korean-American heroine and is centered around a contract romance.

This is not a book about K-dramas, but it sounded kinda right up our alley so girlfriday and I gave it a read and both really enjoyed it. I found it sweet and clever (I love young adult novels, I love romance, and I love dramas—the book hit my sweet spots), and we’re happy to have free copies to send your way for three interested Dramabeans readers.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before features a half-Korean high school student as the protagonist, Lara Jean; she’s the middle sister of three, and together they call themselves the “Song girls” after their mother’s surname. The plot gets going when Lara Jean’s love letters—the ones she writes to boys she’s been in love with, never intending for them to be sent—get mailed accidentally (horrors!), and what ensues is a really cute, funny story of contract dating, love triangles, bickering couples, sisterly bonding, and growing up.

Aside from the cute romance and touching family moments, I have to say I was really happy to read about a Korean heroine in a novel where her Koreanness is a clear presence without the novel being all about her being Korean, if that makes sense. And despite not having anything explicitly to do with Korean dramas, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t picturing a few dramaland actors in the roles, thinking this would make a cute TV series.

TO ENTER THE GIVEAWAY:

Leave a comment below, sharing your favorite K-drama that includes contract dating. (Author Jenny names My Name is Kim Sam Soon as hers. I might have to pick Dal Ja’s Spring for mine, even though it only barely qualifies for contract dating.)

Be sure to leave a valid email address, since that’s how we’ll get in touch with winners.

Deadline: Thursday, April 17, at midnight PST. We’ll announce winners shortly thereafter.

If you’d like to buy the book instead, it was just released by Simon & Schuster today so it’s now available.

(This post is not sponsored and we weren’t given anything to do it; we just liked the book and were offered the chance to give it away to our readers. And who could complain about free books?)

For contract marriage the first drama that comes into my mind is the classic Full House. It was my first k-drama and in all its cheesiness it will always have a special place in my heart.

What a great idea for a book (and TV drama!) Could I choose two dramas I enjoyed: an oldie "1% of anything" with Kang Dong Won, and a newer one Prime Minister and I? Thanks for such a fun website you guys!!

Yaayi ofcourse I do ! I loooove full house but actually I loved its thai version waaaaaay better ! Maybe because its new and the actors are aamzing !
Check it out
and omg I love every plot that involves contract love that turn real !!!
I love how a boy is transformed by a girl which he has never thought of getting involved with , then finding his personal peace the starting to feel like home with her and then protective , sometimes I really dream of having that WHY ? Well because its the truest realtionship any two could ever have since they start with bickering and every awful thing about each other and most amazingly makes the good things just flow out of the bad ones !!
I would loove to have the book evrn thought sometimes I really predict every word !!
favs: sam soon , prime minister

Hi Dramabean folks,

I don't have a long list of favorite dramas but if I had to choose the one that best fits the description I would have to say Goong. Yes, this one is more of a contract marriage, but nonetheless the leads had some very cute moments. They had to traverse politics, high school politics and teenage emotions to actually fall in love. Plus it reminds me when Yoon Eun Hye was full of exuberance. (Seriously, she needs to pick better projects)

While the drama as a whole is definitely not a favorite of mine, my favorite contract marriage is the one between Lee Yoon Ji and Kim Dong Wook in Dandelion family. Theirs was an especially heartwarming story of two adorable characters slowly falling in love with one another. It's one of those dramas that's very mediocre if you watch the whole thing, but awesome if you fast-forward judiciously.

I have to say my favorite contract dating drama is Dal Ja's spring too!! It was also the first K-drama, 5 years ago, that made me the hopeless drama addict I'm today (and also the drama that made fall for Lee Min-Ki, the very 1st name added to my never ending list of K-actor crush xD).

I absolutely adore Jenny Han and would love to read her new novel! My favorite contract dating drama has to be My Girlfriend is a Gumiho. There's nothing like adding a bit of a supernatural element to freshen up the staple kdrama concept of contract dating, especially when the leads are played by the charming Shin Min Ah and Lee Seung Gi.

Before I write down my favourite drama of all time, I just wanted to say thank you, javabeans because I've been an avid reader of Dramabeans and I currently study in the UK and there were times when I missed home terribly. However, whenever I read your blog or recaps of my favourite dramas, it gave me comfort and I felt as if I could understand my Korean culture better because of your witty way of making everything understandable (I'm the only Korean girl at my boarding school thus I had no-one to speak Korean with or talk about Korea at all). So thank you so much and I wish the very best for you and girlfriday.

My favourite drama of all time is 49 days because although Ji-hyun died (I cried like a baby), she realized that her life was not wasted. She had a loving family, helped them find her sister and to aid her sister to move on. She had a man who loved her sincerely and probably will always love her. She had friends, though at the start were questionable and shallow, who cried sincere tears for her that allowed her to live her short yet meaningful life. I found this drama beautifully written and I recommend this drama to everyone.

My favorite contract k drama would definitely have to be Goong!!! My first ever drama:) I remember when I used to sneak down to the basement in the wee hours of the morning and fumble with the stupid VCR player and have to pause the episode periodically to hear if my parents were awake and have to fast forward through the long middle section of ads to get to the second episode on a tape:D Wow, this post really brought me back! Goong was a really cute drama (before the end, curse you, extensions) and my hardships just amplified my love for it:)

Not here to win, even though I would be interested in reading a book about a Korean American without being about identity. Just wanted to echo the above about Creating Destiny being my favorite contract dating drama. The main couple's relationship is just so sweet and frothy with none of the melo. My choice is a bit strange since, honestly, my all time all time favorite is Kim Sam Soon.

Goong.. definitely! I can't count how many times I've rewatched it over the years. I have multiple copies of the DVD in case I wear it out even. It holds a special place in my heart.
My favorite scene is when Joo Ji Hoon is taken away as the arsonist, and Yoon Eun Hye sees him drive off in the car to go to jail. She runs after him and the car stops, and they reunite and have their farewell kiss. I always cry!
The young cast is my favorites! Everyone has gone on to successful careers afterwards.

What K-dramas would be without their contract dating? Or rather, WHAT WOULD WE DO WITHOUT THEM? Since I've watched my first K-drama (*winks at Coffee Prince*), I discovered that I was actually waiting for them to exist. Isn't it the best (trope) way to force two strangers to interact together even when that's the last thing they want? What, free will? Pssh, ask Fate, never heard about it.
Errrrrm, back to topic.
It's hard to choose between Coffee Prince and Dal Ja, but I'll pick the latter. Sorry Goong Yoo, you were my first K-drama love, but Tae Bong was my first Noona romance.
I loved how he was the most mature, in this whole contract shebang. Thanks to that contract, Dal Ja and him could slowly discover each other, while believing that they were free (muhahahaha). By the way, isn't it ironic to tie yourself to someone in a written contract about relationship, and still think that you're unconnected? I love contract dating. When they're well written, of course (go see my lawyer ASAP, you Kdrama hero).

King 2 Hearts, hands down. It depicts not only the "forced romance" between two mule-headed characters (Seunggi & Jiwon!), but also through their love came the start of a reconciliation between the two Koreas. It was beautifully directed and had its humor bits as well as the deep gut-wrenching parts because well, it's a drama. I especially liked Seunggi's marriage proposal scene with the sakura blossoms showering down in the background while he promised revenge against her through love. It was so beautiful.. *sniff sniff* I can't even.

Yeah so I think I might just go back and rewatch it for the umpteenth time. Thanks guys.

P.S. Remember guys, SNSD can start an international war #hardcorefandom

My favourite would be My Name Is Kim Sam Soon.
Kim Sam Soon had a clumsy cuteness that really appealed to me, and her hatred of her own name is very realistic. Full House was great too, but MNIKSS topped it easily. ^_^

Dal Ja's Spring has my vote because of the double whammy of providing us rom-com lovers the gift of Kang Tae Bong, and for the lovely lead pairing that had us viewers squeeing all throughout the drama's run.

Ugly Alert had the cutest side couple where the spoiled but sincere, emotional rich girl gets stuffy, closed off, prosecutor man to "practice date" with her for a month. When she starts to lose her normal peppy attitude because the time's almost up, he oh-so-fake-begrudgingly agrees to extend it another month. I'm sure you can all guess that the practice dating turned into Luv, marriage, and the baby carriage.

Hi, this will be the first time I'm posting something on dramabeans *cue:windy effect*

Anyway, I think the perfect fit for the contract dating/marriage would be 'Delightful Girl Choon-Hyang'. Yay! That's the thing to blame for this unstoppable and incurable addiction to kdrama series. ♥ No regrets, though. Choon-Hyang and Myorong's initial bickering and opposite personalities actually helped the universe to make them fall for each other. I guess this show's one of the pioneers of the mostly watched theme of today's series--- contract dating. 100 days with Mr Arrogant, anyone? Though, I love the succeeding series/movies with the same concept. I realized I just love them equally. Delightful girl will always have a special and greater and wider and bigger place in my heart.

Further, the couples' denial of their feelings in the first few episodes was what build the characters and eventually transformed them to mature people who realized that it's not bad to love each other. Despite their first impressions, which in a away were washed by their feelings, they were able to accept each others flaws and embraced the whole of the person they once hated.

The character development was not forced as the changes rooted from all the experiences they had. It was nice and it sucks both at the same time when they have to give up their happiness for the sake of the other ones. #grandIdiotFounders

Once near the shows finale, you might actually forget that their love story started as a contract. Because that's how life's rolling. And the shows super cute. And kdrama rules that love must be documented. Approved by both parties becaus it's kdrama that's why. ♡♡♡

I kinda want to start writing such letters myself (not to post :O ), but keep myself

My favourite drama with very explicit contract dating/marriage is Delightful Girl Chun-hyang, which was my very first Kdrama set in present time :)

My favourite drama with non-explicit contract dating is definitely My Girlfriend is A Gumiho! It touched my heartstrings and made a devout Lee Seung-gi fan

Favorite Kdrama contract dating? Coffee Prince

So it wasn't the *main* plot of it, but at the very start, when Gongchan is asked to pose as the same-sex lover - yeah, hilarity. I loved that they even dressed alike, couple clothes for the win!
