God’s Gift – 14 Days: Episode 6
by dramallama
Doubts are confirmed, and we get a whole lot of answers this time around. And just when you think it can’t get any worse, you’re proven wrong. It’s creepier, scarier, and more confusing than ever, but all of it makes the show so right and so worth watching. Unless you’re watching this before you go to sleep, in which case, beware: you will get the full impact of fear.
EPISODE 6 RECAP
The show doesn’t skip a beat, and we jump right to where we left off: our killer makes a run for it with Dong-chan on his tail. But out of nowhere, a motorcycle joins the chase – the rider, a bat in hand.
He whacks our killer on the head as he passes, but the rider is stopped by Detective Ho-kook, who shoots at the motorcycle. The motorcycle skids off the road, and our rider is run over by a passing car.
Dong-chan runs over to our dying killer Cha Bong-seob and demands answers from him. Why did he have a picture of his mother? Was she his next target? He struggles to get his words out and only manages to say that he was going to confess everything to Soo-hyun.
Ho-kook walks over in shock, and we see the result of the accident: not one but two deaths. Dong-chan calls Soo-hyun to tell her about our dead killer, and the countdown continues. Eleven days until the incident.
The police come to investigate, and Dong-chan recognizes the motorcycle rider as he is transferred into the ambulance. He came into the police station earlier, as a relative of one of the murder victims.
Soo-hyun is back in a state of hysteria, packing Saet-byul’s clothes to leave again. Ji-hoon tells her to stop with all this nonsense, but she takes out the mystery café photo. The killer is dead, but Saet-byul is still missing from the photo. She thought it was over, but the photo suggests otherwise.
Saet-byul is freaked out by Mom’s behavior, so Ji-hoon takes her away and tells Soo-hyun to calm down. She falls down in tears and ends up falling asleep in Saet-byul’s room.
When she wakes up, she goes downstairs and sees Ji-hoon sitting on the couch, head hanging. She asks if Saet-byul is asleep, and Ji-hoon tells her to get it together: Saet-byul is dead. Shocked, Soo-hyun rushes to Saet-byul’s room and finds her funeral portrait. It dawns on her that this could all have been a dream.
Soo-hyun wakes up in a cold sweat with Saet-byul asking if she had a nightmare. Soo-hyun embraces her tightly, relieved that it was all a dream. Phew.
Dong-chan is interrogated by Woo-jin, who asks him why he was there when the killer died. He pulls out the picture of his mother with Young-gyu that he found at the killer’s place, stating that he needed some answers. Woo-jin responds with more pictures: one of the baby in the third victim Mimi’s apartment and one of Young-gyu as a child. Dong-chan connects the dots – Mimi was Young-gyu’s birth mother.
Woo-jin proceeds to tell Dong-chan that all three of the victims are women who abandoned their children. Our killer was abandoned by his own mother and went on a personal vendetta to get revenge for other abandoned children. Working as a teacher at a welfare foundation (where Young-gyu attends school), he was able to access background information on these orphans.
Dong-chan asks why the killer would target Young-gyu’s birth mother, and Woo-jin assumes Young-gyu must have shown our killer some animosity towards his mother. Dong-chan refutes this, knowing that Young-gyu only mentions his father.
Back in his car, Dong-chan remembers when Mimi gave him the red knitted sweater and looks at it with a tinge of sadness and regret.
At breakfast, Young-gyu is immersed in playing with his special ddak-ji from Saet-byul while Grandma tries to feed him. While playing, he spills hot soup on himself, but the first thing he worries about is his ddak-ji. Grandma hangs it up to dry, and then we see that handwritten at the top of the page (which originally comes from one of Ji-hoon’s legal case files) is a note about his father’s case: “Moojin serial killer case, point of doubt: first suspect Ki Dong-ho that day…”
Dong-chan watches from afar as Young-gyu walks Grandma out for another day of work. Once she leaves, Dong-chan greets Young-gyu and gives him the red knitted sweater. As he puts it on, Dong-chan asks if he remembers his birth mother, to which Young-gyu replies with questions about his father’s whereabouts.
Dong-chan tells him that his mother was a good person who loved and missed him very much and never forgot about him. He tells Young-gyu that he has Grandma and his uncle. And of course, Young-gyu adds that he has Dad.
On that note, Dong-chan tells his nephew to never forgive him. Of course, Young-gyu doesn’t understand this and comments on how warm the sweater is while his uncle tears up in guilt.
Dong-chan returns home to find who else but Grandpa Byung-ho. He asks about the money deal and tells Grandpa that he just needs enough surgery money for someone he knows. He says that there’s a famous surgeon in the U.S. who charges lots of money but can guarantee drastic improvement.
Grandpa shows skepticism towards this information and says that damaged brain cells cannot be recovered. Dong-chan suspiciously asks how he knew about damaged brain cells – he never mentioned it. Grandpa just smacks him on the head, claiming that Dong-chan did mention it. Ohhh, so he does know more than he lets on…
Dong-chan gets a call from Soo-hyun, who asks to meet with him. On their way over to meet Dong-chan, Soo-hyun and Saet-byul try to get Young-gyu’s camera fixed. Soo-hyun offers to buy a new one, but Saet-byul refuses because it belonged to Young-gyu’s father.
While Saet-byul plays with Byung-tae and Jenny, Soo-hyun shows Dong-chan the unsettling photo from the mystery café. Soo-hyun is still worried about the missing Saet-byul in the photo, but Dong-chan reassures her with the facts: the killer is dead, so Saet-byul can’t be taken by him. If only there was proof that our killer was Saet-byul’s kidnapper…
Soo-hyun isn’t convinced, so she seeks out more information from Woo-jin this time. She asks him if he knows what the killer wanted to tell her, but he has no idea. He assumes he was moved by her devotion to saving her daughter (considering his motives), which has Soo-hyun wondering why he would have kidnapped and killed Saet-byul.
Woo-jin then shows her a boarding pass with our killer Cha Bong-seob’s name on it. He planned on escaping to the Philippines after killing Mimi, suggesting that he couldn’t have been the one to take Saet-byul.
More doubtful than ever, Soo-hyun wonders why Cha Bong-seob would be Saet-byul’s killer. She drives past an accident on the road, which suddenly triggers a memory and realization that he wasn’t Saet-byul’s kidnapper after all.
She recalls the day of the big traffic jam, when Saet-byul ran out of the car to see what happened in the accident. She shielded Saet-byul from seeing the dead man, but now she remembers that the dead man was our killer, Cha Bong-seob.
She sits down with Dong-chan to go over the details of that day, convinced that their wanted man is still out there. The caller on Soo-hyun’s investigative program knew that the second victim was stabbed fourteen times, which leads them to the conclusion that there was an accomplice to the crimes.
Leaving Soo-hyun to look after her daughter, Dong-chan waits for Woo-jin at the police station and tells him to reinvestigate the case. He tells Woo-jin that his police instincts tell him that there is an accomplice.
Woo-jin asks him why he’s so devoted to this case, and the air gets tense. Staring fiercely at Woo-jin, Dong-chan says he’s just a citizen fighting for justice. Woo-jin recognizes that look from Dong-chan’s officer days when he chased his targets like a mad dog. He asks Woo-jin if he sees another look in his eyes, one that reflects the blood of a killer running through his veins. Woah, there is clearly some bad blood between these two.
The tension is interrupted by the news that Ho-kook (the one who shot at the motorcycle) is turning in his badge. Dong-chan takes him out for a drink, and Ho-kook is visibly wrought with guilt. Dong-chan tells him that he’s going to have to overcome the guilt, and reminds him that he shot at his own nephew and made him disabled.
Dong-chan tries to help out Ho-kook and calls the local police station near the site of the accident. He asks for information on the person who reported the accident, but there was no call.
Dong-chan clearly remembers telling a witness to call and report the accident, but if there was no call, it means that guy was the accomplice.
Dong-chan, Soo-hyun, and Ho-kook check traffic cameras for any usable shot of the truck driver, and Soo-hyun identifies a small detail. She recognizes the tattoo on the driver’s wrist as one of Saet-byul’s drawings from the shed where she was held before she died.
Soo-hyun wakes Saet-byul to ask if she recognizes the tattoo, but of course she’s never seen it before (or yet). So Byung-tae is off to work on finding the complete image, but he fails to find any. Dejected, Soo-hyun goes back home with Saet-byul.
Dong-chan is called back by Ho-kook, who shows him the recovered black box video file from the motorcycle. The video shows that the motorcycle began to slow down and shake before the gunshot, proving that Ho-kook is not to blame.
When they arrive home, there’s a big scene among the neighbors and our resident security guard tells Soo-hyun that Yong-gyu’s grandma (who babysits for the neighbors) was so adamant about not letting a stranger into the house that she called the police on a man, who turned out to be the child’s uncle. Young-gyu jumps in to defend Grandma, but she’s still fired.
As Young-gyu and Grandma walk home, she notices his new red sweater and asks where he got it. He beams and tells her Uncle Dong-chan gave it to him. He says he likes Uncle Dong-chan, but after Dad and Grandma of course. Aw.
Back at the police station, Dong-chan proudly watches Ho-kook get his badge and gun back. Turns out, they used to be partners back in the day, and Woo-jin thanks him for helping Ho-kook return. Dong-chan says that partners always have each other’s backs – although there was one person he knew who didn’t follow that rule.
Woo-jin follows Dong-chan out and asks when he’ll stop hating him. Dong-chan says he’s taking this grudge to the grave, and when Woo-jin tells him to stop living in the past, he whips around and punches him hard in the face.
Now we finally get a flashback for the truth. The armed man holding young Young-gyu hostage was the father of the girl Dong-ho was accused of killing, and the police force arrives with both Dong-chan and Woo-jin in the squad. At the scene, Woo-jin orders Dong-chan to stay out, but he defies orders and pulls the trigger, shooting young Young-gyu in the process.
Both men are later called to a police hearing, where Dong-chan says he used his best judgment in that situation, and only fired because he saw an opportunity when the gunman was distracted. When Woo-jin is called up, he testifies against Dong-chan, claiming that he defied orders and put their operation in jeopardy. Dong-chan looks at him with disbelief and proceeds to give up his badge before walking out.
Back in present time, Dong-chan furiously yells at Woo-jin that he worked like crazy as an officer to prove that murder didn’t run in his blood, but Woo-jin ruined all of that for him.
Woo-jin tells Dong-chan to ask himself if that’s really true and tells him that he did his best in that situation as well. To that, Dong-chan spits on the ground, stuffs some bills into Woo-jin’s pocket, and walks out.
Ho-kook tries to stop Dong-chan from leaving, but he’s then stopped by a lady who accuses him of killing the motorcycle guy. Dong-chan sticks around to help him explain and picks up on the fact that the motorcycle had been tuned recently, meaning the cause of his death shouldn’t be motorcycle malfunction.
When the lady drops her video game case as they talk, he finds another clue to their missing accomplice: the tattoo design, which symbolizes revenge and death. Dong-chan calls Soo-hyun to ask if she can think of anyone who would want revenge on her. But since she works for an investigative program, she says there’s probably a truckload of people who would want revenge.
Dong-chan is out to investigate the details of the motorcycle tune-up and takes note of a helmet marked M.S. in the motorcycle club picture on the wall.
Soo-hyun is hunting down clues of her own as she finds an email on her husband’s computer about a case 10 years ago: “You’re the one who made the wrong man into a murderer.” She gives a copy of the email to Dong-chan for further investigation and asks him to look into her husband’s past murder cases from that time.
The news of the motorcyclist, Han Ki-tae, seems to have reached the president, who asks his cabinet if there were any shady deals going on with the police. The officials imply that there was some talk, and the president walks out furiously, stating that the people are not dumb.
The officials suggest that they approve the capital punishment request to appease the people, to which the minister of justice chastises them for taking a human life so lightly. But the president seems to be on the same page, and requests a meeting on the topic… Uh-oh.
Dong-chan meets with the motorcyclist’s friend for information and puts together more pieces of the accomplice’s intricate plan. The accomplice set up Cha Bong-seob’s escape and hired motorcyclist Ki-tae to kill him, fearing that Cha Bong-seob would reveal his identity. Then, he set up Ki-tae to be killed to cover up all his tracks, and in the end, it would seem as if Ki-tae acted purely out of revenge. Wow, I cannot believe he put that all together.
Indebted Ho-kook provides Dong-chan with documents on Ji-hoon’s cases from ten years ago, and Dong-ho’s case is one of them. That’s where Dong-chan recognizes Ji-hoon from – he was the prosecutor examining him in court. Before handing over the documents to Soo-hyun, Dong-chan makes sure to take out his brother’s case.
Looking over the cases, Soo-hyun recognizes the residence of one man, who owns a stationary shop right across from Saet-byul’s school. She also realizes that she saw him at the broadcast station (the man in the hat carrying boxes into the elevator) the day Saet-byul was kidnapped.
Dong-chan and Soo-hyun stake out the suspect’s shop, but they both stop each other from entering: he knows both their faces. So in enters Jenny to casually shop for her nephew’s birthday gift.
She tries to get the suspect to reveal his tattoo, and even spills hot coffee on his arm, but he aggressively stops her from lifting up his sleeve. He is totally the accomplice.
Dong-chan and Soo-hyun’s next step is to find the victims’ personal belongings in his house, and Dong-chan mentions that killers enjoy placing their “trophies” somewhere in public. Creepy.
At home, Soo-hyun sits next to sleeping Saet-byul and asks Ji-hoon if he’s been getting any threats recently. He brushes the question off, saying that threats are a commonplace part of his job.
Soo-hyun gets a text from Dong-chan saying they’re ready to go, and as she walks out, she knocks over her jewelry box. She notices the jewelry pieces in the plastic bags are missing and asks Ji-hoon if he’s seen them. He denies any knowledge of the jewelry, but we know he was suspiciously eyeing them before.
Before she leaves, Soo-hyun asks the housekeeper if she moved the jewelry, but she doesn’t know anything about it either. She also mentions that she’ll be out for a while since her daughter’s giving birth any day now. She asked Yong-gyu’s grandma to work a couple days for her, and Soo-hyun agrees to it.
Back to business; Jenny pounds on the door and asks our suspect if she can exchange her nephew’s present. Then suddenly, the suspect’s store truck alarm goes off outside, cuing Soo-hyun and Dong-chan to enter the store while Jenny follows the suspect out to his car.
Soo-hyun is reckless as always and heads straight for the suspect’s home. Dong-chan investigates inside the store and discovers a helmet in the candy basket with the initials M.S. – the same helmet in the picture at the motorcycle shop.
He suddenly gets a call from Jenny, warning him that the suspect is headed back; he really didn’t care too much about the damaged car. Dong-chan stays hidden in the store, but the suspect is headed straight for his house, where Soo-hyun is.
Soo-hyun cautiously looks through the suspect’s drawers and finds a donation receipt from the welfare foundation where Cha Bong-seob worked. She puts it in her pocket and continues to search when suddenly, the cuckoo bird on the clock starts to chirp. False alarm, but my heart still skipped a beat.
Soo-hyun thinks back to Dong-chan’s observation that killers like to display their trophies somewhere public and looks back up at the cuckoo clock. She climbs on a chair and opens the clock, and finds Saet-byul’s watch inside it just as we reach the last seconds of Day Eleven.
Ten days before the incident. Soo-hyun hears the suspect entering and slips into his room just in time to avoid being seen. It’s too soon to call it safe though, because she fumbles and drops her phone, which catches the suspect’s attention. OH NO.
Before she can start freaking out about being caught, Soo-hyun notices the wall in front of her covered in photos – hundreds of photos, all of Saet-byul. Along the other wall, she sees ropes, tape, and bottles of chemicals. He’s the one: Saet-byul’s kidnapper.
As if this couldn’t get any more terrifying, the door behind Soo-hyun creaks open, and she glances back, petrified in fear.
COMMENTS
Chills, goosebumps, shivers, everything! I think that last scene gave me some intense chills because of how casual and simple it was. The door just creaks open with our suspect behind it with no dramatic music or close-ups. The scene happens, and it ends. Ack! How am I supposed to sleep and wait until next week?!
Dong-chan was the main focus of this episode, and I’m glad we’ve finally shed some light on our most complex character. His guilt, drive, and cynicism are explained pretty well with his background story, and we see the reasons for his strained relationships. And oh man, the intensity in his eyes, especially in his scenes with Woo-jin. I could feel the hatred and guilt. While I do understand him more, Dong-chan is still interesting and flawed – enough so that he still remains somewhat of a mystery. That’s what makes him so intriguing, and I really can’t seem to get enough of him.
Also, how is he able to balance his character with humor? Considering how heavy and intricate this drama is, I can barely see any room for laughs, but somehow Dong-chan does it. I can’t tell if it’s just intense mood swings or just the awesomeness of his character, but I think I’ll just go with the latter.
Small note on Ji-hoon, who is getting shadier by the episode. I wonder at what point I will lose all faith in him. I know he loves Saet-byul and wouldn’t let anything bad happen, but his ideals sometimes seem to sway him too much. I’m watching out for him.
And the plot twists, oh the plot twists. The drama just never seems to run out of them. They’re so ingeniously executed and timed. The foreshadowing is there, especially if you look back at the first episode, but they’re so detailed that you’re unsure of how, when, and where that hint will kick in. It’s intelligent, and I appreciate it so very much.
Like many of you expected, there are two killers, and I think that transition was done quite well. Clues were sprinkled here and there, but it did take Dong-chan putting the clues together for me to understand the whole connection. It’s convoluted, but necessarily so, because we know that our killers are smart, and now it seems that our surviving accomplice is smarter. Oh dear.
I’m not too sure how I feel about Soo-hyun’s reckless audacity – part of me questions it while another part of me totally admires it. Knowing her smart investigative background, I would think Soo-hyun would use more logic in these situations, but we’ve seen since the beginning that when it comes to her daughter, Soo-hyun is willing to risk everything. She’s so forward about saving her daughter that it scares me how many more lives she has left – she’s already gone through a couple. But I think it’s that devotion that wins me over. She knows what she’s going into and jumps into it, without any intention of turning back.

Very similar in many ways - the clues and not-clues, suspense, all very similar though a much different overall plot.

Well I'm pretty sure the whole point of her role is to look pretty so in that case she's perfect. If she's supposed to be acting, well that's a different story.

Okay. Nothing special or outstanding. Her role is not demanding of varied emotions so it is okay. She did well in the scene where she entered the shop was engaging the supposed killer. She got some screen time there. Maybe in coming episodes or in her next project we'll get to see her varied acting.

Personally, for the little scenes she has, and the small character she plays, she's been doing pretty well. This is her first drama, right? It's a very small part, but she brings what the character calls for.

Because he was revealed to early right?!
I don't have the feeling yet but for me it feels to early to reveal the character so something is off. We might get a loooooong chasing and kidnapping part.

i also have the same feeling just because it's too early to reveal the kidnapper but i wouldn't mind if he was one, it will be something new as in the kidnapper is revealed early but the hero and heroine couldn't stop him until the last moment because he is very smart, if i think with a logical mind he could be the kidnapper because it wasn't proven that the real kidnapper actually killed Saet Byul, he just kidnapped her but she escaped and accidentally drowned herself isn't it?, the store owner has a high probability of being the kidnapper Soo Hyun and Dong Chan are looking for, he was seen in the broadcasting office by Soo Hyun the day Saet Byul was kidnapped and the photos he has collected of Saet Byul tells a lot too, why would you collect some child's photo and paste it all over the room? it indeed tells me that he was planning to do something with the child, plus he has legit motive, revenge against Ji Hoon who helped to prove his father guilty of the crime, the store owner believed his father was innocent, now that i think of it, the watch of Saet Byul that Soo Hyun found in the store owner's room clock might have been used by him as bait to lure Saet Byul, he might have said, 'Oh, Saet Byul, I want to return your watch which you dropped in the store a few days ago or something like that...well that's my theory, anyway loving the drama and falling hard for our lovable Ki Dong Chan...

No I really don't but I do know that it happened most likely because of something he did. And him covering up what he did is causing problems. But he loves his daughter clearly and has shown no mental issues or unhinged tendencies that would lead to him wanting his daughter dead. I still don't understand how anyone is coming to that conclusion. He's very sketchy indeed but that doesn't make someone a killer.
And that brings me to this point: He had a point with the "witch" story/metaphor. Innocent until proven guilty: I think he takes it to an extreme that's idealic, bordering on dangerous, but he has a point about people jumping to conclusions based on what little they see without bothering to look at anything else. They assume they're right and carry out justice as they see fit without looking deeper and it causes problems. The show is trying to say something about that, i.e. Soo-hyun almost killed the Gangnam killer and made herself a murder to save Saet-byul and later finds out he wasn't the kidnapper at all. Jumping to conclusions.
In that case he was still a killer and messed up but what happens when the subject of their ire isn't actually guilty?. What happens when people are punished for things they haven't done because people didn't bother to look deeper (like we suspect Dong-ho's situation is right now)?
Super long response I know, sorry. But it's food for thought I think.

totally agree with your comments, i also don't understand why people are suspecting ji hoon of kidnapping his own child, it looks like they really want him to be a bad guy, he might have a dark past but that doesn't necessarily mean he had an affair with someone or killed someone etc, it might be that he prosecuted someone but later found out he was wrong about his judgements and the guy he prosecuted was innocent after all, he might be guilt stricken because of that just like Dong Chan whose dark past is accidentally shooting his nephew, even after they disclosed the reasons for Dong Chan claiming he had seen Ji Hoon before and it turned out that he was just incharge of the prosecution for his brother's case, people are still suspecting Ji Hoon using some stupid theories, it also might be the people here like the chemistry between Dong Chan and Soo Hyun which i am a part of, and they want Soo Hyun to have a reason to dump her husband so that she can be together with Dong Chan...

- Part of me wonders if Saet Byul took the jewelry.
- If the killer is targeting Saet Byul because of Ji Hoon, I will be SO angry. Not at the show (it's a good motivation) but just...argh! Why do people do this? It's not like Ji Hoon's the type to falsely indict someone, at least as far as we can tell. So maybe he prosecuted someone and they were innocent but sorry dude, that happens a whole freaking lot. Doesn't mean Ji Hoon's a bad person for believing the wrong truth. And it sure as hell doesn't justify you going after his kid.
- Now that I'm done rambling, I've got to wonder: Ji Hoon clearly recognized something in episode 2 that made him assume some person he knew was directly responsible. I don't think he'd remember a ten-year old case, so I'm wondering if this is a red herring (unless Snake is somehow involved. he would recognize him because of Saet Byul)
- I don't know why I'm so weirdly invested in Ji Hoon. I think it's because he's so firm in his convictions and there's nothing I like more that a character who has to bend their morals for the greater good (greater good being his family).

I don't care for Ji Hoon - I think there is something shady about him, maybe more than one thing. Still no clue on what the pictures were that he got in ep2, but it sure seemed to set him off.

I'm with you there. He's probably done something that in part causes all of this, (not to mention that people from half of his prior cases seem to be indirectly involved,) but that doesn't make him "evil" like half the people are thinking here. Everyone in this show is "shady"-- heck, even Soo-hyun has done some shady things if you look from an outside perspective!

the accomplice didn't want cha bong-seob to ever "out" him, so he hired the motorcyclist to kill him, likely promising him a lot of money in exchange.
but he also messed with the motorcycle so that it would malfunction and kill its rider, so then cha's death would look like it was done out of revenge.

I find it laughable for them to jump into conclusion about the motive of the kidnapper purely based on a tattoo. Some people do get a tattoo as a reminder/marker of a significant events, but a lot of the time people get a tattoo simply because they like the design. Especially for a tattoo design originated from a video games, it would not be unusual for a fan to have it tattooed on.
Also, when you break in someone's place and realize that the house owner is back, you try your best to hide in the least noticeable corner, not to take your time looking around with a bright light in your hand.

if you're talking about the tattoo's only some people as in minority do it because it's fun or they like the design, almost all the people i'v met with tattoo on them have reasons and most of the tattoo's tells stories about that person, i also do watch a lot of crime documentaries and prison documentaries and all of the murderers and criminals they show there give solid reasons for every tattoo they have on their bodies, some of them did have tattoo's signifying revenge or death or murder, this tattoo in the drama signifies revenge and death which the said person might have tattooed himself with that in mind...it doesn't hurt to investigate the person just in case, if it were the police they would have done the same thing...i do agree with you on your second comment, it was stupid of her to do something like that, it's common sense...

Soo-hyun is indeed reckless and I find myself yelling at her sometimes that she's going to get herself killed. She only has so many lives. But the writer is good at creating a female character that, y'know, acts like a human being. She's not perfect but her actions make sense and I find myself rooting for her because she's a good person trying her damndest to save her daughter. She's frantic because she has a single goal of "save Saet-byul" and jumps straight into doing what she needs to to save her.

Also Woo-jin is even more on my radar now taht we've seen what happened because I really don't know how he knew when he did about the killer getting killed last episode. Who would've told him? Ho-Gook was in shock basically and definitely didn't call him. I still suspect there's someone inside the force who's collaborating, that's the only reason the accomplice would know that they were on the way to Soo-hyun right?
Unless that was just an editing mistake/ subbing error and I'm over-analyzing. Because I really can't think of a reason he would be the insider. No one is safe from suspicion but if I can't come up with a motive I'm reluctant to pin someone as a major suspect. Even if it isn't him I think someone is on the inside and this is all linking to some kind of larger conspiracy as some other people have been suspecting.

Exactly! There's a web of lies and deceit here that's part of a conspiracy, we know that, but we just don't know how far it reaches out or who's really involved. The beauty of this show is that everything isn't extremely obvious but it's also not so cryptic and hidden that we have no idea what's going on until the show reveals itself all at once. So we can speculate and theorize and hope our logic is sound without being frustrated and grasping at straws. I feel like an investigator :)

am thinking it's a case of a cover-up. The defense lawyer/hubby allowed some guilty person to get away with murder and someone in political/police/broadcasting power is aware of it. Still, it's odd that the murderer of the women AND the kidnaper/probable murderer of Saet Byul AND the mentally-disabled inmate brother should all know something about this conspiracy. But am totally on the conspiracy train nevertheless.

Yeah that theory is extremely likely and what I'm leaning on. It's very coincidental when you think about it, them all being involved, but very believably played out and emotionally gripping. That's all I can really hope for in mystery crime thrillers at the end of the day.

Can someone clarify this for me? Jihoon was a prosecutor back when Dongchan had to testify, but he's a human-rights lawyer now? I thought prosecutors are generally the people who want to toughen up against crime and make laws stricter and everything, and that usually includes supporting the death penalty... but Jihoon argues against it?
I don't know... I'm still trying to wrap my head around the facts we've been given, the facts we think we've been given, and the possible hints we're being given... O.O I feel so confused.

Now that's out of the system... OMIGAWD. That ending was so goosebump inducing.
The creepy wall of pictures seem so sketchy tho. Someone help me clarify this. The pictures are angled in front of the girls. When they were in front of the store? If that guy was in the store and running it... How could he have taken the pics from that angle? So My point is... There is another "accomplice"...
I'm having doubts that the little girl is actually not dead. Something tells me it's not her. But the little girl with the puppy. PLoT TWIST. Lee Boyoung's real purpose to go back in time was to save herself. I don't know anything anymore but I wish it was Monday even tho this is my first ever free weekend in months.

See, I got a few sexual tension vibes, but not couply vibes from DC and SH. Not really. I see it as two comrades caring for each other who happen to have sexual tension. But since dramas thrive on that, maybe we'll see romance. I hope not. I like their relationship as is.

The sexual tension is what's killing me. I too do not wish for anything more, it'd be so cliche and way out of the tone and setting of the drama. Dramallama - you're a strong recapper!!!! I really like your style and your way of looking at things. I really appreciate Dong-chan. He's one of my favorite dramaland characters as of right now. He's so full of AWESOME because he is flawed in the best way a fictional character can be: sordid past, twisted present, golden heart.
Ji-hoon opened up so many questions this episode that are so DELICIOUS in terms of writing brilliance. I think it was smart for the writer to wait this long to throw him into the mix. Before we were running on Soo-hyeon's desperation, now we have LOTS more intrigue. Not like we didn't havea ny before...but anywho! Thanks for the recap!

I also don't think it's him but he's definitely shady and may be inadvertently involved based on some past action.
I was glad that Dong Chan didn't remember him from adultery photos. The writer I'm sure, figured we would be suspecting that but instead of going that route, it was through his hyung's case. The threads are weaved so well into this story's fabric.

This show likes to throw shade on everrrybody. Aside from our main characters, i'm even including our resident security guard who happens to pop in and out of scenes every now and then all seemingly normal, gramps, who seems to know alot more about dong-chan than we think, and yeah, im eyeing detective Ho-Kook as well, because no one is free from suspicion.
Every other main character is suspect by default.
Also, yes. That last scene, although not your typical scary scene (usually they like to do sudden sneak attack with a loud sound to accompany it), but here it is more effective and fear-inducing to have US see him sneak up on her. Very suspenseful. I'll admit i may have let out a shriek that no one should ever hear.
And Dong-Chan, oh dong-chan. I never have enough words to speak of you but in this episode I see your flaws, I understand you more, and I continue to fall deeper in love with you. You, who makes me swoon, double over in laughter (that ho-kook imitation HA), and makes us all relieved you're in soo hyun's life. She would not survive on her own!
Thanks for the recap!

I actually suspected the security guy since episode 2, he seems to be popping in and out too conveniently in the story to share his opinions. lol. Also there was that one scene in episode 3 where he found Saet Byul's clothes in the dumpster and gave Ji-hoo that long lecture about how a human-right lawyer should know better when he returned it. Now that we have narrowed down the motive of the kidnapping, that scene just came back to me.
I feel that gramps is probably connected to the case 10 years ago or one of the Ji-hoo's cases, maybe one of the relatives of the victim.
Also, there must be a major hint from the scenes a year ago that I missed. Aside from showing us the lady from that cafe and giving the background to how everyone started to know each other. Why started from a year ago? My guess is that the family of the victim from the incident a year ago is also involved. And also, what did Dong-ha see when Soo hyun crossed/uncrossed her legs?
That last scene totally creeped me out. I think I would handle it better if he came with loud thud from behind her, but it was the silence and the accompanying secrecy of his movements that sent chills down my spine.
DITTO on everything you said about Dong Chan!

Thanks for the recap. The episode was all kinds of awesome. I'm waiting for the analytical commenters to wake up and rip it apart. I think I need to rewatch this.
Someone mentioned and I agree, Soo Hyun really shoulder killed the flashlight but I think she was genuinely lost in the shock of the moment. In the back of her mind she's probably planning to pull out a sharp object and stab him as well. She's quite fearless/reckless.
Dong Chan is just too sexy. I get why he's upset with Woo Jin but I understand Woo Jin too; he acted on his beliefs as well. It must pain him so much to look at Young Gu. On that note, I understand that he would be uncomfortable around his mother but I don't understand his apparent disdain as was shown when he spat out the soup. Ahhh....why Dong Chan?
The appearance of another villain so soon has caught me off guard. I also noticed that it wasn't just Saet Byul in those pictures, but also the girl with the puppy...could she be who he's targeting. In any case, he's creepy as hell.

I noticed that too! I guess I should go back and look again but with the glimpses we got it looked like the little girl with the puppy was in every picture with Saet Byul. Coupling that with it only being episode six ... it seems unlikely that Saet Byul was this guy's target.

All these characters are as interconnected as some of us realized.
Woo-Jin who we now know was a colleague of Dong-Chan's. Dong-Chan who was the witness at the proceeding that Ji-Hoon was a prosecutor for (wait, isn't he a lawyer? he defends the accused but he's wearing prosecutor robes in that trial). Ji-Hoon, who married Soo Hyun. Soo-Hyun, who's first love is Woo-Jin. Dong-Chan, who has formed a partnership with Soo-Hyun.
Dong-chan's grams who is now Saet-byuls temporary nanny. Saet-byul, who befriended young-gyu, Young gyu whose mom was Mimi. Mimi who was killed by our first murderer.
..I am now only waiting for where 10 bill. won gramps fits in to all of this cause so far his character is the most random one yet.
To think one of the baddies is THIS close to our heroine, i'm on pins and needles.

Ack, that was good. The ending scared me out of my wits, but so good.
Bullet points rather than rambles today (and probably from now on) since real life is intervening. I'll still be skulking around these parts, even if I occasionally disappear.
1) Ji-hoon as a prosecutor: interesting. It might provide the motive for the kidnapping, but it also makes us wonder why he switched to becoming a human rights lawyer. He was part of the prosecution which argued for the death penalty for Dong-ho; now he is fervently opposed to capital punishment. Maybe some arms were twisted on the case in order to procure a harsher verdict? Disillusionment would account for Ji-hoon's career choices. Here's looking at you, sinister politicians.
Also, got to admit that I got this one wrong: I thought Dong-chan wouldn't forget the face of someone involved in the case. However, the case took place much longer ago than I had first thought.
2) Another spate of serial killings! The drama made it clear that Dong-ho was convicted on the basis of Dong-chan's evidence - but Dong-chan only claimed to have seen Dong-ho with one victim. So I'm coming down on the side of Dong-ho's innocence for now.
3) I do not buy Bong-seob's explanation. Kill three women before emigrating? Why only those three? Besides, the fact that Young-gyu only asks for his father makes Bong-seob's claims even shakier.
4) Young-gyu's red jumper. It was sadly sweet that Dong-chan ensured Mimi's intentions reached her son. But the shade of red is disconcertingly bright against the drama's muted palette, and it worries me.
5) Dong-chan did not kill Bong-seob. Well hurrah for being partially right - although I did not expect a motorcyclist to come out of nowhere. I did call that Ki-tae would be playing a bigger part in plot, but his part was certainly unexpected.
6) Ki-tae's girlfriend(?). I don't trust her. On the other hand, that is my first impression of every character on this show.
7) The existence of an accomplice. Considering the intricacy of his cover-up plan, he could have been the brains of the operation. But when Dong-chan realised that it was the police who had called the emergency services, my instincts were yelling that it was an inside job. Sure, the accomplice may be smart - but how would he know where the police van would be without insider info?
8) Creepy stationery shopkeeper Jang Man-soo. Well, he's definitely a serial killer: he has an entire room of murder equipment. (Unless the drama pulls a fast one, and gives us a legal explanation for the terrifying storeroom from hell.) And those photos! I felt unclean just looking at them. But none of them were of Saet-byul by herself - so I think his true target may have been her puppy-owning friend, thus making him yet another murderous red herring. It also shocks me how close my tongue-in-cheek wildcard explanation - from way back in the first week - might be to the truth. It's just further proof, as if...

(Cont.)
8)... It's just further proof, as if it were needed, at how good the plot is at laying little clues way in advance. Anyway, paedophile cum serial killer it is. And goodness only knows what happened to the poor dog.
9) Soo-hyun spotted what she thought was Saet-byul's clock hidden in Man-soo's cuckoo clock. It's not too distinctive a model, any little girl might own it. So it may very well have been a trophy from one of his victims - perhaps the one we saw in the first episode? Alternatively, in the case file, Man-soo insisted that his father was wrongfully convicted. Maybe it was because he was the one who committed the crimes: the account of the murder does tally with the equipment he owns.
10) Ji-hoon's threatening email was sent from someone calling himself 'davinci'. A boast about his intelligence, perhaps? Oh, and I don't blame Ji-hoon of not taking much heed of them - it does seem that it would be one of the drawbacks of the job, and most of the time nothing would come of them. However, this could be the exception that proves the rule.
11) The disappearing jewellery. I had not thought of Saet-byul as a possible culprit (thanks, mk). If it is Ji-hoon - as the show is leading us to believe, what with him staring at them in the previous episode - it might be that he recognised them. So it may very well have been his initials on that ring. Hmm.
12) Grandpa knows something. My guesses are birth secret shenanigans, or he's Woo-jin's father - trying to atone for his son's actions. Because Woo-jin completely threw Dong-chan to the wolves in that investigation.
13) Oh, Dong-chan. He's clearly feeling a lot of guilt for Young-gyu's brain damage. But I'm not sure how he did cause it - perhaps the drama was just squeamish of showing a bullet in a child's head. Nevertheless, Young-gyu has no scar indicative of such an injury. Admittedly, I could be reading too much into it.
14) Dong-chan's impression of Ho-kook was some much needed levity. (But I still mistrust Ho-kook. Call me paranoid if you want.)

4) That is so unsettling...Young-gyu with his green shoes, yellow jacket and red jumper is the brightest of them all...in terms of colors at least. That's such an irony if we think about his mental state.
5) Oh yes, after having second...and third and fourth thoughts about that, in the end I was right that I was wrong LOL.
6) Same here. Don't trust anyone.
7) I think either the truck driver was someone from the police or someone from that van was involved in all that.
8) STILL wouldn't bet my money on it. Thanks show, you taught me to distrust everything I see LOL. I explained below in my awful-long post why I wouldn't jump to conclusions with him. Those pics are beyond creepy, but as someone else already mentioned, the perspective from which they were taken is off. We also have the pics with the puppy there and we know that Man-soo was on the girls's side when that happened. Could be a setup, but if it was, how would anyone know they are suspecting him, in order to plant the evidence in advance? There are some just with Saet-byul, but indeed, in most of them, she is alongside the other girl, who might have been the actual target - if he actually planed to do something to them or if it just was a morbid fetish. Oh God no, not the dog!! So adorable! I HATE it when they harm dogs on TV shows.
12) Isn’t he a bit old to be Woo-jin’s father lol? Could be, but since DC’s mother even brought him food and he seems to know all the family history, it’s likely that Gramps is related to DC. Yeah, it was cruel for Woo-jin to act like that, although just like Ji-Hoon, he did what he thought was right and they both put the job above the personal matters (Ji-Hoon helping Bong-sup, Woo-jin confirming that DC disregarded his orders). While Ji-Hoon damaged his relationship with Soo-hyun, Woo-jin made his colleague turn against him. Even though what they did was wrong, I kind of understand the reasoning behind both of them. Kind of. Curious that both men from Soo-hyun’s life are/were equally invested in their jobs and distanced themselves from other people close to them – could that mean that Soo-hyun will end up with DC, who is different from these two?
13) They also didn’t explicitly show Saet-byul in that field – only her hand and a bit of her face. Either they are hiding something or they don’t want to show violent scenes involving kids, but I guess it’s the latter.

Did Dong-Chan's mother bring the food specifically to Woo Jin? I thought she brought it for her son and bumped into halbae there so she left the food with him. She didn't seem to recognize him or talk to DC about him. Heck, for all we know his mother didn't even bring the food.
