You From Another Star: Episode 10

Not that Song-yi wasn’t charming before, but today’s really her episode to shine as she suffers a setback or two, sucks it up and gets to work on fixing things, and perhaps most importantly, gets a clue. A really big, juicy clue! She may be the world’s biggest star, but she’s also a girl who likes a boy, and watching her stumble through how to deal with that (and reconciling it to the knee-jerk reaction of “But I’m Chun Song-yi!”) is pretty giggle-worthy stuff.

RECAP: TENTH RECORD

Hwi-kyung confronts Min-joon, half-believing that he’s Song-yi’s rescuer from twelve years ago. He demands to know Min-joon’s identity and age, insisting that he saw him in the photo and also remembers him from his own memory.

Min-joon hides his alarm well, keeping his stoic face while denying the claims: There are many people in the world who look alike, and Hwi-kyung is free to believe whatever he wants to. Hwi-kyung can’t back off as long as Min-joon is hanging around Song-yi, though, and warns Min-joon to stay away.

Song-yi finds the shard of bloody glass and connects the dots. Thus when Min-joon arrives, she gets straight to the point and tells him what she believes: that he was there that night to stop her car, and that he smashed his hand into her headlight.

Min-joon has to come out strong to deflect her line of reasoning since it’s so accurate, and says harshly that she’s being foolish—glass comes from many places, not just headlights. He suggests that she’s delusional to jump to such conclusions.

Song-yi doggedly persists, demanding proof that he was at the police station that night and a look at his hand injury. But the cut is almost completely healed, deflating her suspicions somewhat.

Yet Song-yi can’t shake the feeling that something is off about Min-joon, no longer willing to dismiss it. Min-joon snaps that Song-yi has ruined his peaceful life, and wants her to leave. That’s enough to get her to leave in a huff, although she pauses to ask, “Don’t you want to know where I’m going?” He doesn’t answer, feigning indifference until she leaves.

Song-yi sees the chicken he’d bought for her, but heads out with her packed bag to join Hwi-kyung. Rather than relocating to his family villa, though, Song-yi ends up sprawled in Bok-ja’s tiny room, ha. I love these kinds of reluctant friendships.

Song-yi wonders whether Bok-ja has a crush (her folded cranes are a telltale sign) while Bok-ja asks the same, since Song-yi’s fixation with her cell phone suggests she’s waiting for somebody to call. Song-yi drops the phone like a hot potato and insists it’s not true.

Bok-ja admits to her crush, though, dreamily describing the man who “feels like he came from a beautiful star,” whom she fell for at first sight. Bok-ja’s flashback is like something out of a romantic epic, showing her listening to a string of love song (whose lyrics narrate her feelings). Like a miracle, Min-joon rides by on his bike, and she stops him to offer her folded paper cranes as token of her affection. Min-joon curtly dismisses her, thinking she’s trying to sell him something, and rides off. Lol.

Hwi-kyung makes sure Song-yi’s locks are changed so she can return home, and calls her mother and brother to her side even though Song-yi says she’s fine. You can tell Yoon-jae is as frustrated with his family as ever, but he’s still his noona’s protector and insists on staying (aww). Mom offers to stay too, but Song-yi makes sure to send her off.

Killer Secretary reports to Jae-kyung on how Min-joon simply could not have made it down 23 floors in the time it took Jae-kyung to ride the elevator down. It’s not mathematically feasible. There were no other elevators running, and it’s just not possible for him to have moved that fast. Jae-kyung bursts out into sardonic laughter to hear that he witnessed the impossible.

Min-joon knows that revealing some of his powers was risky, and Lawyer Jang urges him not to do any more of that. He suggests that he warn Song-yi about Jae-kyung’s actions so she can keep out of his way, but Min-joon is adamant about Song-yi being safer not knowing. Lawyer Jang points out something Min-joon seems to be ignoring, which is his own mortality—unaging body notwithstanding, he is still killable. What if he dies here on Earth?

The investigators press Yura’s sister for a lead on her boyfriend. The sister is reluctant to talk to them, but hearing that her unni was pregnant and possibly murdered gets her to open up. She doesn’t know much, but she confirms that Yura seemed to be dating somebody with money. Without other defining characteristics, Detective Park’s mind once again turns to Min-joon as possible suspect. Seok is still hesitant to jump to that conclusion, but doesn’t rule it out.

Min-joon does some surveillance of his own and follows Jae-kyung home, where he overhears Jae-kyung ordering surveillance put on Min-joon. The threat is clear, since Jae-kyung is ready to “solve” the problem of Min-joon, and in Jae-kyung’s world solving pretty much means killing.

Jae-kyung comes home as Hwi-kyung is talking to Song-yi on the phone, which gets his attention. He asks about Min-joon in a casual tone that still sounds a little too interested—and now Hwi-kyung looks at his hyung with suspicion. Ooh. I like that. It’s why Hwi-kyung doesn’t share any of his own thoughts, merely saying that Min-joon is the neighbor guy and nothing more. He asks why his brother is so interested in Song-yi these days, and doesn’t seem convinced when hyung laughs it off as brotherly interest.

Min-joon watches the videos on Yura’s flash drive, the first of which we’ve already seen, which shows a scared woman urging Yura to “leave him or risk dying yourself.” The second video is of a conversation between Yura and Jae-kyung, and now it becomes clear that the scared woman is Jae-kyung’s ex-wife. The world believes them to be a normal divorced couple, not knowing that he has Mr. Rochestered the ex into an asylum against her will.

Song-yi texts Min-joon, waiting in anticipation for the “message read” notifications to pop up. They do but she gets no reply text, so she spends some time telling herself she’s totally fine and doesn’t care. Only to jump on her phone when it rings, of course.

But it’s not Min-joon—it’s her building, informing her that her rent payment hasn’t come through. She heads to the bank and is told she has insufficient funds after paying her agency those fees for breaching her CF contract. Song-yi airily tells the agent to take out a loan, only to be told that not only is she no longer a VVIP with them (thanks, Mom, for spending all the cash), she’s got bad credit and doesn’t qualify for loans. Ouch.

She heads home dejectedly and idly considers selling her car. Immediately horrified, she squeaks an apology to the car, and repeats the scene with her “babies”—designer handbags. Finally she decides to sell them and takes them to a shop, thinking they’ll fetch nice sums because of her name value. The shop owner sniffs that her name would actually drag down the value at this point, and tells her the cold hard truth: Everybody knows she’s broke. He declines the bags and asks her not to return to his store.

Time for some bootstrap-pulling. I do love that Song-yi skips the whole wallowing-in-self-pity step and moves straight on to the Do-It-Yourself option. Snapping loads of selca photos of her with her bags and accessories, she uploads the photos online and puts them up for sale. She hesitates at the contact information line, though—she can’t give her own phone number, can she?

Cut to: Min-joon lecturing to his class, interrupted by text messages from interested buyers. LOL.

Even if she were to figure out her rent problem, however, Song-yi gets hit with another setback when her mother presents her with additional contract breach fees. This bill is for projects she hasn’t even heard of, so she decides she’ll have to go and fight this one herself.

But her confidence has taken a severe hit, and she asks Min-joon to accompany her to the meeting tomorrow. She says that she doesn’t care about being broke—money can be made—but she fears that revealing her vulnerable state would cause her to crumble. So she wants Min-joon there to step in before she crumbles.

So Song-yi decks herself out in her boldest power suit and wears her haughtiest face as she struts into her former agency with Min-joon at her side, and faces CEO Ahn with her shield of confidence. CEO Ahn’s ready for a fight and has his lawyer present, arguing that she agreed to pay the fees.

Song-yi protests that these latest fees are for projects she never agreed to do—so he’d agreed behind her back and is now putting her on the hook for backing out. Min-joon steps in to point out all the agency’s own legal violations, citing the contract back at them smoothly.

The agency’s lawyer gulps and advises the CEO to back down, especially since Min-joon points out that Song-yi could be entitled to money from them if they chose to pursue it in court. Booyah. I know this is exactly the point we expected the moment they stormed the building together, but it doesn’t make it any less satisfying. (And then Song-yi actually uses Min-joon’s Joseon swear at her CEO, which brings a smile to Min-joon’s face.)

On their way out, they run into Se-mi (and her manager and stylist, who seem to genuinely miss Song-yi, though they fear showing it). Se-mi asks to have coffee together, and while Song-yi tries to decline, Min-joon agrees on her behalf. Already miffed, Song-yi’s extra annoyed to see Se-mi on good terms with Min-joon.

Se-mi apologizes to Song-yi for their last encounter, which Song-yi is not having—she sees this as an insincere facade, an act to make Se-mi seem the martyr. Min-joon finds Song-yi’s words harsh and cuts in on Se-mi’s behalf, which do little good in smoothing over the tension.

Then the stylist spills drinks all over the table, dousing both actresses in coffee. She and Bum rush to check on Se-mi, while Song-yi gets ignored. And then Se-mi fusses over Min-joon, which raises Song-yi’s hackles.

During the ride home Song-yi makes jealous digs about Min-joon’s interest in Se-mi, which is adorable. Min-joon tries to give her a dose of tough love, telling her that the world won’t care if she falls off a cliff, so she’d better wise up and take charge of her own life.

Song-yi says that’s why she asked him to stay with her, which only hammers in his dread of having to leave. “Why do you trust me?” he asks. “Don’t trust me. I can’t stay with you forever.”

She asks why, thinking he’s referring to her being too broke to pay him. She promises not to cheat him of salary and says that all she wants is to be able to ask him for help every now and then. “Can’t I do even that?” she asks. He doesn’t reply.

They arrive outside their respective doors, and Song-yi lingers there, trying to think up excuses to spend more time together. Min-joon keeps up his disinterested attitude and heads inside, leaving her disappointed.

Which is why she brightens up to hear that Mom dropped off some kimchi, since it’s only the friendly thing to do to share yummy foods with your neighbors. She annoys her brother (who’s trying to watch E.T., heh) into dropping off the kimchi with Min-joon (“Tell him it’s from me! Make sure to say I’m home!”).

Min-joon accepts it without much reaction, and Song-yi’s disappointed to hear it. She tries to prod Yoon-jae into going back to retrieve the kimchi container, and he barks at her to do it herself. So she says with false reluctance, “Well if you say it like that, I guess I’ll have to,” then flounces to her closet to change her outfit. Holding up a glittery tutu dress, she wonders, “Is this too much?”

Looking like something out of an Audrey Hepburn movie (so… I guess Audrey Hepburn), Song-yi heads next door and asks for the container, only to get the door slammed in her face while she waits. She lets herself in, trying not to be too obvious that she’s dragging her feet about leaving. Min-joon repeatedly tells her to go so she can’t argue, though she sure takes her time heading out.

Turns out Song-yi’s not exactly fast on the uptake on this one, because it’s only now as she returns home in mortification that she realizes, “Do I actually want to stay there? Chun Song-yi, get your act together!”

She spends the evening muttering to herself about why she’d like a guy like that, only to concede that she does like his height, and his face, and his eyes… She starts listing off all his qualities (physique, Harvard background, kissing) before freaking out about the direction of her thoughts.

Se-mi drops by the prosecutor’s office to deliver clothes to her overworking brother, who asks if she knows anything about Yura having a boyfriend. She does, because she had heard Song-yi mentioning Yura bragging about dating a chaebol, but doesn’t share this with her brother.

Hwi-kyung drops in on his brother’s room looking for him, and happens to be there when Jae-kyung’s cell phone rings. Ack, don’t touch that phone! I’m not sure Jae-kyung would go so far as to kill a brother, but it certainly can’t be a good thing. (On second thought, now I wonder if Jae-kyung had anything to do with their third brother, who’s been alluded to a few times. Definitely something weird there.)

The caller is listed as “K,” and Hwi-kyung answers intending to take a message, but before he can say much a woman begs him to have her released because she’s not crazy. At that point Jae-kyung snatches the phone from his hand with a scary glare on his face, and dismisses the caller as a crazy person. Hwi-kyung lets it drop, but he’s definitely looking at hyung with new eyes.

Min-joon calls Seok to request a meeting, not knowing that the call has been tapped and Killer Secretary is listening in. Ack, not good, not good.

Song-yi asks to talk, so they step out onto their respective balconies. She takes a nervous breath and asks what Min-joon has done to her: “You did something, I’m sure of it. Otherwise there’s no reason for me to be like this.” She says she intended to attract him in her 15 seconds, “But did I fall instead?”

She asks what he thinks of her, then immediately yells at him not to answer. Too embarrassed to face him, she turns away to continue talking: “I’m not this kind of girl. I do recognize things you’ve done that I’m thankful for. But I’m not the kind of person who can’t tell the difference between gratitude and those feelings.” But why does she keep thinking about Min-joon?

She ventures, “As a woman, what do you think of me?” But immediately chickens out: “Aie, don’t answer, if you answer you die!”

He stays so silent through it all that she wonders if he’s still there, and anxiously turns around… to see him standing right where he was, staring. But not quite indifferently?

Song-yi returns to her room freaked out, and spends the whole night lost in mortification. Oh, honey. We’ve all so been there.

She’s therefore a bit dead-eyed when she makes it to Bok-ja’s manhwa shop, where she overhears two doofuses gossiping that Song-yi was a bully in high school. Hearing such random gossip gives her the idea to put on a press conference to state her innocence, because she’s been hidden away too long. Bok-ja advises her on the perfect press conference technique to draw sympathy—no doubt more commentary on the proliferation of the industry’s press-conference-as-damage-control tactic—like how to dress (plainly), look (sad), and talk (tearfully, but without crying until the very end). Alas, Song-yi has no agency or money, so for now this is all a pipe dream.

She does get a call from an interested buyer and disguises her voice to answer it, but has to argue that none of her stuff are fakes.

As Seok parks his car, two trucks strategically park on either side to provide convenient cover from the security cameras. The moment he steps out, he’s clubbed in the head and goes down. The clubber sets a pen down—oh no, stolen from Min-joon’s desk—ready to be discovered as evidence.

That leaves Min-joon waiting at the cafe for a prosecutor who doesn’t show. Ack, and now there’s the recorded phone call to prove that Min-joon asked to meet Seok. Boo, evil villain! Why ya gotta be all smart like that?

Min-joon notices the ambulances going by and sees Seok being loaded in on a stretcher. And parked nearby is Jae-kyung, who indicates that Min-joon should follow.

Song-yi arrives home, bummed that Min-joon continues to remain out of contact. She “remembers” that she left her hair tie behind and jumps on that handy excuse to go next door to ask for it back. But not before another outfit change, naturally.

Min-joon’s long drive finally ends in a dusty field. There, the two men face each other and Jae-kyung repeats his words about letting him and Song-yi live. Min-joon holds up the flash drive and asks if handing it over will get Jae-kyung to stop.

Jae-kyung agrees, but follows that by pulling out a gun, which he levels at Min-joon—it’s a dart gun, filled with enough tranquilizers to send him down painlessly. He’s planned this to pin both Yura’s death and Seok’s attack on Min-joon, to be capped off with a suicide note planted on Min-joon’s computer.

Song-yi lets herself into Min-joon’s place again and looks around for him, wandering down to the library… which just happens to be where Killer Secretary huddles, unseen for now. Ack!

Min-joon thinks back to Lawyer Jang’s warning not to reveal any more of his powers to Jae-kyung. It’s the crucial moment, since Jae-kyung is surely not the type to let that kind of knowledge go, but on the other hand, Jae-kyung adds that he’ll be offing Song-yi next. So when he pulls the trigger and the dart speeds toward him, Min-joon poofs away. Gone.

Jae-kyung looks around in confusion, and then a second later Min-joon is there behind him, murmuring into his ear: “What did I say? You. Can’t. Kill me.”

EPILOGUE

At her shrink’s office, Song-yi faces her doctor in a fit of nervous rambling, asking whether a dependency problem can turn into love. She has a dependency on chicken and beer to get her through depressing times, for instance, “But I don’t look at a chicken leg and feel butterflies.”

On the other hand, she does feel butterflies at seeing beautiful handbags, “But if I don’t have them I don’t feel my mouth dry out or think of them on other women’s arms and have the impulse to kill them.”

Getting increasingly worked up, she declares, “But this is like that. My heart pounds, my lips burn, and if I can’t see him in front of me I feel uneasy. Thinking of girls flirting with him makes me want to—!”

Recalling herself, she calms down and meekly apologizes. And then, “I want to take that bitch who wiped away the coffee spilled on him and BREAK HER WRIST!”

She twists a nail ring on her finger (so, crazytown) and asks what the diagnosis is. The doc scribbles some notes and prescribes her something stronger.

COMMENTS

Aw, I love Song-yi. Despite the fact that she’s a bit absurd (y’know, just a little) and has got the ego the size of a medium-sized country, there’s such a normalness to her emotional reactions—in that, she’s a normal girl falling in love, feeling that mix of giddiness and mortification in the face of her crush, and it’s completely relatable. Hilarious too, with a dash of cringiness. I so get it.

I’m not sure if Min-joon was totally unaware of Song-yi’s feelings for him or if he was just surprised at the extent of them, but I love that he knows now, even if that intensifies his inner conflict of wanting to keep her away for her own good. Of course, “for your own good” never works anyway, and while he may have been able to deny his own feelings when he thought they were only his, I expect this turn to challenge him much more, to the point where he can’t keep denying them. It’s one thing to be cold to somebody you don’t want to like, but it’s another to know that the person you love is also in love with you back, because his current tactic of being extra-mean to push her away is clearly not sustainable.

She may be lacking some desirable traits (say, modesty or sweetness or empathy), but her gutsiness is what makes me both want to root for her and to sometimes be her. We’ve all had that fear of rejection stop us from doing things at some point, and it’s a natural reaction to hesitate, but she’s also not going to let that feeling stop her from facing facts and confronting her issues head-on. That isn’t just applicable to the way she handles her feelings but also her approach to fixing her problems, and I really appreciated that she didn’t sit down and indulge in self-defeatist mopings when she was down and out. She just dusted herself off and found a solution. (Now, the solution itself was hilariously ineffective, but give a girl props for taking action.)

It’s one of the things that sets her apart from Se-mi, who was scared enough that she kept her feelings to herself for a decade, and while I do actually feel quite sympathetic toward her regarding Hwi-kyung (who genuinely cares for her, just not in That Way), she is by no means a victim in the situation. It’s sad, but not tragic. I feel like that’s how Se-mi approaches most things in life, wanting more but too scared of going after it, and therefore she lets herself fade in Song-yi’s shadow.

I was super excited that Min-joon outed his powers to Jae-kyung, even though this spells certain disaster—before, Jae-kyung just wanted him dead. Now, I fear he’ll set out to ruin or expose him, and that could be worse. Well, not worse than death, perhaps, but worse than being a constant murder target. It has to mean something that Lawyer Jang pointed out that Min-joon is capable of dying, and now he’s put himself directly in front of the enemy’s bull’s-eye. Well, a metaphorical bull’s-eye; there are probably more effective methods than bullets. He could just get kissed to death. Now that I’d love to see.

At that scene when she confessed, for a minute, I thought he had left and I felt so mortified for her but then I thought he could just have poofed behind her and was just waiting for her to turn around. I love Kim Soo-hyun oppa to pieces, but the star of this show is definitely Jeon Ji-hyun's Chun Song-yi. She is something special I haven't seen in a heroine before, that perfect mixture of ego and fragility, she's like a female Dokko Jin. That scene were JK pulled that gun on MJ, I scoffed. I was like don't you remember him telling you that you couldn't kill him, but when he said it was tranquilizers I was suddenly terrified. Min-joon spoofing right in front of JK

Yes, when she started in on that comment I said (out loud) "oh here we go!" knowing she would do another of her malapropisms (like, not Helen Keller but Florence Nightingale). So when she got it right that was extra adorable for me.

Too many things I love in this episode!! But I'll only comment on that one scene when Min Joon tells Song Yi to not depend on him because he won't be able to be by her side for a long time. It just breaks my heart so bad. When she said that her ideal man is someone who will stay with her for a long time, it's like her giving him a hint and asking him to stay with her and now he somehow refuses to accept her feelings because he know he'll be gone in like a month or two. Ahhh, my poor heart.

And what's with the nail ring, Song Yi? Does that hold something important or are you just cosplaying Killer Oppa?

Thanks so much for the recaps, javabeans!

I both love and hate the ending scene. I love that jaekyung witnessed minjoon's little disappearing act as jk pulled the trigger because it further emphasized to jk that mj can't be killed by him, and scare him and wipe that confident smirk off his face. On the other hand, jk is not going to let this go and so we have new conflicts which is a good thing for a drama but urgggh I'm so WITH our good guys that I fear for their safety.

I'm loving this drama more than is healthy....I have 3 deadlines coming up :S and the Song Yi/ Min Joon combo is hell of a distraction.

Plus the characters are written so well. If it was another drama Hee Kyung would never be wary of his brother, despite the obvious signs that something is off and would continue his blind faith in him. Even with Se Mi, despite her personal motives the fact that she goes to her brother and tells what she knows. I don't really know how to explain it, its like with other dramas it seems farfetched that all the characters are involved in the main plot lines, and there aren't good enough reasons for their involvement. an example is Melody of Love where every character is related somehow but they don't even know how and even if they do they keep it a secret for some odd reason.

Even with Min Joon being an alien there's just so much common sense that it's just a pleasure to watch. I'm not screaming at my screen at noble idiocy etc etc. The Prosecutor Brother is a perfect example of this, the way he explores all options to find out why the actress died instead, yes naturally he has some suspicions on Min Joon but when alibis work out he goes off and investigates other things. Despite Jae Kyung thinking he has covered all his tracks its the Prosecutor whois slowly finding holes in his cover.

I was laughing way too much at the scenes with Song Yi and the kimchi box and after she came back to her appartment reeling in embarrassment because I kept thinking Min Joon would be listening into her ramblings and then imagining Min Joon's reaction this LMAO

It too bad there wasn't many interactions with Lawyer Jang, those scenes are just too precious.

I'm really really hoping hot Prosecutor Brother doesn't end up like the Prosecuter in City Hunter because my heart will not be able to handle that. My wish, if Min Joon remains on Earth the Prosecuter becomes the next Lawyer Jung. I predict there will be a budding comraderie between them as Min Joon trues to protect Song Yi and the Prosecutor tries to find out the truth about his case.

Gotta love the sheer confidence of them spoofing their own show.

I got the feeling that the origin of that scene was in some good natured teasing JJH was doing off-camera. And the creative staff decided to flesh it out and put it on air.

Word. I bet she just told the director that she wanted to a "batsh**t crazy" version of the counseling session because why should that other actor have all the fun of playing psycho? So they let her use a nail ring and someone decided that Song Yi would have to have a GOLDEN nail ring.

This drama is seriously driving me nuts, I mean I've been addicted to dramas before but nothing like this. It's just too good and not to mention, really unpredictable. They'll really keep you hanging and that's when you feel that waiting for the next episode is a total agony. I cannot express how much I love the both of them. They're to gorgeous. I kinda feel bad that I ship them and wish that they would date in real life when Jihyun is already married. I can't imagine how sad I'm gonna be when this drama ends, I mean, we're halfway now! They can go on until 100 episodes and I'd still be stoked everytime.

Lol at my comment. It's just pure fangirling and nothing about the episode. Well anyway, the drama just keeps getting better as the episodes go by. I wish they would extend it or something though that's pretty impossible.

Haha.. Welcome to drama crack. It was fine in the good old days when I was watching dramas from DVD sets. Fast forward a couple of years and I started following dramas real time and man, when you are following a crack drama live,it's pleasure from the awesomeness of the drama and torture from the weeks and weeks of waiting for the next set of episodes to come around.

Thank goodness Kdramas air 2 episodes a week. I always thought that was a strange format at first, but now I don't know what I'd do without it.

Now that MJ has exposed himself to JK, I am scared that they will turn to Lawyer Jang to extract more information about MJ. You know, they could kidnap Lawyer Jang's family to try and force him to reveal MJ's weaknesses! Oh dear, there could be a lot of dangerous things to happen and I can't really think how the story will unravel which keeps me at the edge of my seat, literally and figuratively!

I just love staring at MJ's face all the time and wish I could be as sassy as SY..hihihi...my new super heroine!

UGGGH TOO MANY FEELINGS.

Is Minjoon really just going to get implicated just like that? I swear it'd be realistic for the cafe he was at to have a CCTV in order to prove that there's no way he could've been the one to knock Seok out (personally at least), but since this is dramaland, I guess it's not going to happen. It also seems like the other detective guy is likely bribed into Jaekyung's side or something too. T^T

But on a better note, I'm glad Hwikyung - despite his blindness for Song Yi, is a lot smarter of a character than he could be. I was so happy that he was able to pick up on how shady his brother is being, but now I'm worried for him too. The more he becomes suspicious of his own brother, the bigger the target on his back becomes. D: I don't want him to meet the same kind of fate that their other brother most likely did. I hope we get more of his character and see him become defined more by things aside from his love for Song Yi.

Semi frustrates me because now would be the best time for her to be honest about what she wants and feels - just go and live freely, and yet she still continues to hide behind a certain mask. I can't say she's evil outright - or has been all along, but man would I like for her to have some balls and just be direct with people instead of hiding in the back and plotting or whatever. I guess that would make everything much too easy for the drama, but still, haha. She wants to be a person outside from Song Yi's shadow, but here she is just entangling herself further in a rather childish game instead of trying to find something for herself. I really want her to come off as more than just a bitter & jealous girl.

Jun Jihyun's portrayal of Song Yi has won me over so much I just don't know what to say anymore. T^T Ugh, I loved her scene on the balcony and everything to do with her feelings for Minjoon. Add me onto the long list of people who were really hoping that Minjoon would teleport over to her side and kiss her after her lovestruck ramblings. D:

I need the next episode to come sooner! T^T I really want to know how Minjoon will handle Jaekyung after revealing his powers once again, and I need to know what's going to happen to Song Yi!!!

Remember he is supposed to be an alien anyway, who only recently is interacting with humans. before he did it but on a limited scale. When the drama first started remember when the teachers were inviting him out ? What was his reaction - he was cold and dismissive. When he first met Song Yi, his persona was the same. You actually saw a tiny bit of thawing when Song Yi was drunk in his apartment and then she was taken back to her place by the guy that likes her and through the wall he heard the conversation between those two( the guy wanted to kiss her because he thought she was asleep) but then she hit him in the back of his head - and for DMJ a little smirk came on his face. then when her wallet was left in his apartment and he was looking at the picture then you got a reaction on him seeing it and then him trying to find her to ask her about it. As his defenses crumbled during the episodes, you can begin to see more of his personality because really he's supposed to be an alien.

I would agree if the copy-and-pasting were done by a kindergarten-er.

Nah, Kim Soo Hyun as Do Min Joon is doing really well for me. It's just that his reactions are so subtle that if you don't watch out for it, you won't see it. It kind of perfectly portrays a cynical, bored alien who has seen it all. I'd imagine that if I've lived for 400 hundred years and have seen the backstabby ways of humans, I'd treath them as ridiculous little chess pieces that don't deserve big elaborate reactions too. But our alien's ice-heart is slowly melting and I loved the scene when he stared at her after listening to her confession. His fast breathing as indicated by his heaving chest showed that he was affected by her, probably longing to be by her side, and that longing was evident in his eyes. His hardened lips showed shock and somehow, his whole posture showed restraint, because he wants to stay away from her "for her own good".

So yeah, Kim SooHyun expressions aren't all the same.

Personally, I think Kim Soo Hyun's portrayal of Min Joon is spot-on. Min Joon is an alien who has lived the last 400 years on earth indifferent to human emotions. He purposely distances himself and keeps his involvement with the human race to a minimum. He adopts an impassive facade to deter people from interacting with him. So his face is expressionless most of the time. The beauty of it is that he may be expressionless but his face is NEVER flat. His eyes talk all the time.

He is like an intellectual who lives in his Ivory Tower looking down on everyone else while cherishing his memories and interactions with other intellectuals and highly artistic people. But now his tower has been invaded by one dumb, sassy, egotistical Hallyu star. So while reserved Min Joon gives out laughs with his deadpan delivery, Song Yi does it with slapstick and her OTT personality.

Kim Soo Hyun is so good that to me, Do Min Joon is real. When I am watching the drama I dont see KSH, I see DMJ.

I am now very curious of what JK has to hide, much more than anything. I think the reason will be linked to why he hid hid his wife whom everyone deemed crazy instead of killing her. Something must have ignited him to become this psychotic.

I don't have a good feeling for song yi. Hope she will not notice the assistant in the study, or else she may be harmed or even injected that propofol. Yeap, my mind is going wild.

And I dun get why the assistant is so loyal to JK. Do they know each other even be4 he turned this psychotic? If JK is caught, the assistant will not escape too.

And then a prosecutor would be killed and the USB would be gone and no one will know what the heck happened to YuRa, the only smart prosecutor in drama-land, the not-crazy wife taking up space in an aslyum (I doubt they have the powers to avoid death-by-crazy-man)and probably Do MinJoon and Cheon SongYi (When Do MinJoon gets sick).

Jesus, the guy just kills everybody. The only reason he's holding back is because he doesn't know where the USB is. Once he knows where it is... all his tracks will be wiped off, so giving the USB to the police would be dangerous and useless.

That was really devastating to find out that Jae Kyung not only killed Yu Ra, but also his own child. And then to see his reaction to finding out--I thought at least there would be some remorse--but it was a look of triumph. And I cried when her sister found out about the baby.

I'm so frustrated with Min Joon. He should have just walked into the police station unannounced, or posted the video online. The way he did that was just asking for something to go wrong.

And also, the "you must be crazy" talk in this episode. It is not cool, as a woman, to be on the receiving end of that lecture. Just hope she finds the truth soon and he doesn't feel the need to resort to that.

Oh! In IHYV, Soo Ha and Cha Byun were saying don't tell Jang Byun, she's safer that way--looks exactly like what Min Joon said to Lawyer Jung this episode about not telling Song Yi! And how did that turn out? (Btw, am I the only one who thinks of Hye Sung every time someone says "Lawyer Jung"?)

The difference between se-mi and song-yi is that one puts on an innocent facade while hiding an ulterior motive -- fake to the extreme. Song Yi can be unlikable upon first impression, but no matter how haughty she is she's real. And we all prefer someone who's real with their personality versus someone who's fake because you never know their intentions or when they'll backstab ya.

their scenes (well CSY's behavior) reminds me of Lie To Me; when HKJ falls for GAJ when he's home sick (after she feeds him) and then he keeps picking up his phone, hoping she'll text, It's a great scene and one we all can relate to.

Lie to Me was my first drama and I loved how both characters grew throughout the show; almost like a Pride and Prejudice concept.

I love that the little brother is suspecting his older brother (although that puts him in the danger zone). The beauty is that the bad guy will eventually get his comeuppance (which will be ooooh, so satisfying)...but we don't know how many casualties will be taken before that happens.

Wow! The decision looks like it's either be with the girl you love, or protect the girl you love. The build up has been so fabulous. Being with her will weaken him, not being with him will drive her insane...Heehee. So fabulous.

Thanks for the recap!

I'm not sure they can drag this whole evil brother story line out much more ... at somepoint it will have to be resolved and still leave enough time to resolve

1) ET go home
2) Getting back on the horse
3) Backstabbing ex-BFF
4) Lovesic second lead
5) Lost father

That's what I'm hoping. However, they can also drag it until the very end (like in I Hear Your Voice where it took 17 eps before the killer was finally caught). I'd really prefer to see more interactions between DMJ and Song Yi -- how they change and help each other. I don't want it to focus too much on MJ being framed and chased like a fugitive. SY has already hit rock bottom, and so I'd rather not see DMJ ruined either. But since the things happening in the present time have some parallels with the Joseon events, I have a feeling that a lot of misfortunes will happen first before things will get resolved.

Sorry to be so abstruse. I'll add a little more. I wanted to point to parallels and to speculation about what happens to DMJ (and SY) at the end.

The story of the Little Prince is told by a Narrator, albeit not the Little Prince himself.

The Little Prince's Rose is on his home asteroid, not in the Desert which he was exploring. SY is the petulant and vain Rose, although she isn't very petulant.

The Little Prince's view of things is changed during his time in the desert. He is first discouraged with learning that his Rose is but one among many and then told by the fox that his Rose is special in being the one he loves. She is "tamed" by him and one feels responsible for those things they tame.

Does anyone think that there are characters like the Fox and with the Snake in YFAS? JK as Snake? If there is a Fox, who is it? The Fox seems more wise than is friend Jang. What about the others?

The Little Prince dies, kinda, by being bitten by the snake, at the end, to return to his asteroid and to his Rose. I was wondering what people make of that, especially with SY being on Earth and not on his home planet. Is there an SY at home?

According to Wikipedia there are 47 Korean translated editions of The Little Prince. And later there is a claim in the Notes that there are 350 editions of The Little Prince in Korea, including in manga/manhwa.

Is there no other alien ever since the breaking UFO news (ep 5)? It'll be great if another alien (who should be a female as eye candy for the male viewers) helps Min-joon to keep his identity a bit longer, and maybe also help protect Song-yi by going undercover at SNC Group. Along the way, she'll get some attention from Evil Secretary and rebellious Yoon-jae...

If this doesn't happen in next episode, I might as well look out for some fanfics of this drama at that time. XP

Supposing MJ is able to defeat evil JK without compromising his identity (nobody believes what JK claims to have seen, rendering him the crazy one instead), here's the dilemma he faces with regards to coupling up with SY:
- time is running out and the easy way to ensure a future for SY without him is to push her towards faithful HK who can make sure she is well looked after for the rest of her life. He seems to be going down this path currently, heeding HK's warning to not get involved with her, thus distancing himself although he obviously has strong feelings for her. since matters with her agency are settled, there shouldn't be much need for Do manager's services.
-He can't reveal his identity to her cos she will be burdened with keeping this gigantic secret and she's a person who's always under the limelight. If he is ever exposed while they are an item, she would also be implicated and suffer unthinkable consequences, and he would never want that for her to go through.

I'll take the contrary position and still support Se-Me. I think she is conflicted, but she has not done anything all that treacherous, as yet--her replacing Song-Yi as the lead in the drama was so obvious Song-Yi she never should have denied it and Song-Yi, no matter how injured her pride, should never have objected.

Practically speaking, there was no way she could have turned down that change in her role. It would have crippled the production, harmed everyone in the cast and crew, and probably, because of that, it could have ended Se-mi's acting career. If it were possible to re-cast, why should Se-mi or Song-Yi want some other actress unknown to either of them get the part? Or Se-mi's part, because the producers would have been justified in firing her over her refusal to accept the changes in her role.

Acting is a business, first and foremost, and those two women are professionals. They both know what was at stake. Se-mi's only real misbehavior was not telling Song-Yi immediately when she got the call from the producer. If she'd told Song-Yi right then and there, matters would not have spiraled out of control.

Required fields are marked *

She hasn't done anything dangerously treacherous, but her total lack of reaction to Song-yi's near death situation spoke loudly (contrast to Song-yi's reaction to her arch enemy Yoo-ra's death).

<Practically speaking, there was no way she could have turned down that change in her role ... it could have ended Se-mi’s acting career.

Perhaps it would have slowed it down even further, but turning down a role doesn't end your career. It might make you lose out one some other roles, with specific directors or companies, but there be other options. Bigger scandals have failed to end careers (perhaps put them on hold or slowed them down for a while but not ended them).

And even if it did, it still doesn't make it right. Well, it depends on what you value more – fame and fortune, or friendship. (Makes me think of people who date their best-friend's ex just after their BBF and the ex have broken up.)

I was absolutely happy when CSY confessed!!!! And it really took a lot of courage for her to do that, and I just love her character. Also, I actually thought MJ would teleport his way to SY's side of the balcony (and pretend he jumped over the little shrub that partitions their balconies) and kiss her which would lead to MJ's weakened powers again, which leads to him getting shot. I'M SO GLAD HE DIDN'T END UP GETTING HURT!! JK shouldn't have provoked MJ by saying he would go after CSY next.

I wonder if MJ actually stopped time after CSY confessed. To process his thoughts or whatever. Haha. Anyway it would be nice to know what he did afterwards, and how they ended the confession scene. He couldn't have just stared at CSY until she left, right?

I just finished re watching 1st & 2nd ep. Found something unnoticed before. First: Min Joon sneaked out from the team and went to the village with a big curiosity with human being. He's a naughty young alien back then. Second: Do Min Join wrote his journal with right hand while in his real life Kim Soo Hyun is a left handed. That's cool for me.

I think this drama will stay forever in my heart, especially when it has a happy ending. I already put IHYV as a grand collection and been watching it over and over again. I think it will happen to this drama too.
