There are some interesting results coming out so far. Looking at the lists, it just confirms for me that it has been a very dry year in drama watching for me. Especially considering the amount of categories I do not even have an opinion about.

Male character wise I'd add Kang Haneul as a break out, and the Monstar Sun-woo character in somewhere because he was pretty darn complex.

And Moo-chul from TWTWB was great.

What we DID see this year in k drama amidst everything good and bad were some interesting and fun female characters. Hye-sung was really great, and one of the best female characters written in k drama land period-she's outside the trope box on alot of things. She's on the top of my fav character list. Do-yeon wasn't exactly colored inside the lines either. We also had Dok mi, and Kim Nana, and the best Mom ever. Entertainment value wise we had Lil Sun, and Gong Shil, the editor from FBND, the girls from R94, and the cell block biotches from Secret.

For me, I Hear Your Voice is the stand out drama, my second favorite is FBND.

What we DID see this year in k drama amidst everything good and bad were some interesting and fun female characters.

And not just lead characters (my love for Go Dok-mi, Tae Gong-shil and Jang Hye-sung will never cease) but the reimagining of the hated Second Female Lead.

I agree with all your choices there, though I'd add one possibly unintentional scene-stealer - Park Chung-jo of Gu Family Book. On paper, she's the standard second female lead with only tragedy and revenge in her future (and the drama criminally underplayed her in its second half), but Lee Yubi turned what could have been a blip on the radar into a powerful, emotionally raw performance. I hope she breaks into lead status soon, I don't want her to be a female Kim Jae-wook!

One trend I was happy to see was that a lot more of the female characters broke out of the aegyo/Candy box that has been SO overdone in k-dramas. I hope the trend continues.

Other than TGS and JHS, I actually liked the female lead from Dating Cyrano. She was a lil flighty but hey, she stood her ground when it came to her, eh, flighty ideals on romance.

Great ones you pointed out there - Kang Haneul and Sun-woo in Monstar. Really loved Moo Chul from TWTWB too. A villain, but a complex villain with an interesting backstory.

Laugh riot!!!! Thanks for a single category, glorious mane--but truly he is an awesome actor, only if his old dramas were shown on the net somewhere, though a secondary character on his previous dramas, he still stood out.... Hurrah for JB and Girl Friday's love for our Choi Jin Hyuk's mane will never be forgotten, nor his romance with Lee Yeon Hee, true legends as Mom and Dad fr Gu Family.

I started voting, then notice Heirs was winning and thought "Ooh god whats the point in voting if the worst show I have seen all year is winning due to eye candy and the youngin" lol sorry I was disappointed when I saw secret might not make the top three, and that Heirs would which MAKES NO SENSE!! just my two cents =]

As of right now, Master's Sun is topping Best Drama with 49%, followed by IHYV at 38% and Answer Me 1994 at 25%. Heirs is not in the top 3, and certainly not winning.

hahahahaaaaaaa I nearly died laughing at JB's notes, please never stop <3

I see Master's Sun is dominating nearly all the categories that actually require us to love whatever's onscreen (though imo it's not the best drama of the year, even if it has the best OTP), and School 2013 is fighting its own way even though it aired and ended so long ago (it began this week last year, does anyone remember?). And these dramabeans commentariat decisions make me very happy, indeed.

Wow, I just realized I didn't watch that many dramas that aired this year and mostly read recaps. I just started watching Master's Sun and I'm not that taken with it. I think the hype made me set my standards REALLY high. Same thing with I Hear Your Voice. Loved Secret though.

MS isn't a great drama to be honest. Just watch the off-screen BTSes and get back to the drama and I swear, the OTP's chemistry will burn into your retinas. And wash, rinse, repeat.

Required fields are marked *

Hehe, I will. The way their relationship develops and their chemistry is the most interesting thing about the show to me so far! I hope they are dating in real life or are at least good friends...that will eventually start dating :D

Required fields are marked *

If you're already hoping for that to happen without having first caught the cute in the interview and BTSes clips, you will find yourself spiralling down a dark dark hole after doing so (and I will be waiting for you there here).

Cos' they have dynamite and illegal chemistry off-screen. It's just impossible, seriously.

Required fields are marked *

Late, but this is true. I really wasn't into it for the plot, and I wasn't into the plot as anything but a way to let the OTP be around each other (and preferably touching).

I adored Best Love but there the chemistry between Cha Seung-won and Gong Hyo-jin was like a warm glow, while here it can turn into a crackly blaze between So Ji-sub and Gong Hyo-jin (and I say this as someone who wasn't a huge fan of him before MS either)

It's all personal taste really. I loved I Hear Your Voice. I could not stand the Joong-won character in MS, and I found the "romance" not to my taste. Secret made me want to stab someone, but I think Ji sung is a great actor. The best thing I find to do is go with my gut, ignore hype. I'm not saying don't watch a hyped show, I'm saying watch what floats your boat, not because someone else is squeeing, or not squeeing.

Required fields are marked *

I'm 12 episodes into Master's Sun but still not taken with it. I don't hate it though. I think Tae Gong Shil is lovely :) and I love her interactions with the dead, especially when she get annoyed by them.

I felt the same about I Hear Your Voice, too. I did finish it and while I didn't hate that one either, I also did not love it. Lee Bo Young was awesome though! And so was Yoo Sang Hyun. I did recommend it to a friend though because I think it's something more up her ally than it is mine. Having such an evil villain definitely helped me to keep watching it...kudos to that actor.

yeah! MS was good but not the BEST! or my fav of all time! this title is going to be for "Secret" to me!
I really liked MS but I wasn't that obsessed with it! but I can't ignore the burning chemistry! :D on and off screen!

the same thing with IHYV many people were stating that it was THE BEST and stuff! but when I watched it I wasn't that pulled into it either! I don't know why! maybe Lee Jong Suk! I don't know! I really love him but I wasn't really attached to him in this drama! and maybe cause I'm not a noona romance lover :D!!*runaway and hides*

weird, but the secondary characters have become better lately and the hardest to choose was secondary romance and coupling! they were all very quirky and great, from Gu Family Books´ gumi-guard grumpy young men to the not-so-good doctors, patients and hyungs in Good Doctor to Bona and Chae-Young and the editor in Flower boy... really thats how life is. life is not just 4 main heroes

I am a bit sad you did not have a poll about the best parent-child relationship. although I suppose Two Weeks, I Hear your voice, and Eun Sangs´mom, the others are kind of out of it. I want to give a large pink cupcake to Su-jinnie! the most adorable character of the year!

my favorites are I Hear Your Voice (heroes to villains to idealist lawyers to frenemies), School 2013 and Two Weeks.

I have a vague appreciation of SJS as JJW in MS but his off-screen persona, d'aaawww. He is so adorkable and awkward that I forgave him a lil for not living up to my expectations on-screen. But I have to say, for a first legit stab at romcom, he did extremely well. Especially if you take his personality into consideration.

Admittedly, I got utterly ruined by their off-screen chemistry but it did help to make MS more enjoyable, especially on my second watch.

@Mar:

Add me to the mix too - no celebrity boner for both SJS AND Joong-won. What is (platonically) appealing about him, however, is his real-life dorkiness. And off-screen chemistry with GHJ. I think the latter had a lot to do with me finally enjoying some parts of MS, especially GHJ/SJS scenes where they are doing their Scooby Doo thang.

Required fields are marked *

No no.. I finished MS but it was in no way close to TGL. But i did enjoy IHYV esp LJS performance there. I really didnt think much of his acting in school 2013 but he was wayyy better in IHYV.

For me, monstar was the only one that i loved emotionally this year. I enjoyed OHYV snd secrets. And currently loving potato star :). Hoping that the next batch will bring some goodness. Esp man from another star and warm words.

It is a GOOD idea 2 think before making comment!!
The heirs is a drama for those who aren't shallow!!

I have read in many articles that critics praise LMH for his improvement in his acting in the heirs!!
In each episode he has emoted different feelings!!
He has a lot of facial & verbal expressions which is NOT STH EASY!!!!
Do you know how hard the cast work in this COLD weather??? Now you guys, simply use the word "disappointing"???
AT THE VERY LEAST you could have learnt from "Tan" 2 be thoughtful!! U don't like it,then LEARN sth at least!!

It is a great drama with a LOT OF interesting characters,CLEVER & AMUSING one liners & dialogues!!
A drama full of beautiful love scenes!!
A drama with a deep message!!
A drama with HEARTBREAKING & impressive sad crying scenes!!!
A drama which has been SOLD 2 Japan with the HIGHEST PRICE!!!!
Among 2013 K-dramas,The heirs,is the ONLY which has been sold with the highest price!!
A drama which has had over 400,000,000 Chinese viewers!!!
A drama written by QUEEN OF ROMANCE COMEDY,Kim Eun Sook

A drama, with Charismatic Tan character, which made LMH gain over 10 million friends in FaceBook!!!
10 million followers in weibo!!!!!
Now you are saying disappointing??? what THE HELL!!!

I will remember you, Heirslover.

We all have dramas that for some reason resonate with us. Heirs is immensely popular, so you know you are not alone in being a fan, as your statistics support.

I fangirl too. It is embarrassing that I am 50 years old and fangirling. But I was too serious to squeal over actors as a teenager (Shaun Cassidy? Richard Hatch? Dirk Benedict? Rick Springfield? ha ha)

Don't be offended that not everyone likes what you like. It seems the more KDramas folks watch, the more jaded and critical we become. It's like the innocence of a first crush vs the three-times divorcee who knows KDramas can break your heart and end badly.

Personally, I am a big fan of Marry Me Mary, Nine, and Rooftop Prince ... which plenty of people will tell me are flawed. Sure, I know, but I like the shows anyway ... enough to watch again and again.

So I support your enthusiasm and fangirling and swooning. Be in love. Wallow in the joy of a drama that makes your heart sing.

Who doesn't like to fall in love with KDrama?

Oh your comment made me tear up. Yes, "jaded" is the word to call a lot of us, but there was once a time where our hearts also flutter upon the silly things we call them now.
And yet we ridicule them now as we washed our hands free of the said silliness. How sad is that? Where is the empathy and gentleness in our souls with the years passed by? And the saddest part is in fact the inability to fangirl and welcome the cheesiness with open & warm hearts which we once could - it is called age, my friends.

Sword and flower: past sense. I laughed out loud. That's a good one!

SECRET: I stalk because I love... or maybe I love because I stalk. *Ponders* - I literally thought about that for a good minute and I still don't know which one's right. I loved secret, but heavens it was messed up at times.

Secret definitely takes best villain for me. Damn I still don't know if I hate BSB's character or not because I wanted to squeeze his insides when he was being a dick but then in the end (don't wanna spoil it for anyone who plans to see this) I actually felt remorse. Maybe it's just brilliant acting but it got me in the gut. Guy needs to win a major award from KBS. He's a gem!

GFB = underwritten. Heirs = underwritten and over-over-over populated. The last category needs to go to the whole heirs team. It's unfair to give it to just one of them and thus demean everyone else's sob story!

0

Required fields are marked *

I stopped watching after 6 or 7 episodes…Mirae's choice (or not?) is actually extremely, extremely disappointing…despite also having awesome actor and actress for the OTP. For me, though…the show is a "meh" instead of enraging. Perhaps because in Mirae's, the heroine gets to improve in her professional life. She dares to chase her dream, not just weeping around about it as she did in her beginning (though I've read the 15th epi recap and this changed?). For me personally, I get offended (more so than I should) when a woman writer writes (well even if that's a man writer, but at least I can make an excuse, that writer is just an a**) what can be seen as violence and we're supposed to view that as a romantic gesture. Or when an adult heroine (or close enough to be considered adults) is handled as a pure object. I just take offense at that. Wholeheartedly.

Where's the Worst Makeup category? Heirs and its fucshia lipstick for pale-faced men would win that category. I loved the scene where Young-do is defeated at Tae-kwon-do by his dad, and is left sprawled on the mat with foundation makeup smears all over his white dobok.

While I'm speaking of Heirs, why on earth are Kim Tan and Young-do doing so well in best frenemy category? Every time the two of them are on screen together, I just sigh and think about how fantastic the dynamics were between Go Nam-soon and Park Heung-soo in School 2013 before they made up. Heirs keeps trying to copy that relationship, even down to the scene where the schoolboys must write their letters of apology while stuck in the same room, but the magic just isn't there. No chemistry.

I would argue that, of you're going to have a character from IHYV inn the Favorite Characters category, it should be Hyesung over Suha. Suha was great, but she made that show. Come to think of it, there were very few female leads included in a rare year when so many of them were great characters.

Yeah, same here. She was my favorite of the year, no contest.

I don't know why that is; many of them just didn't catch my eye or I got lazy and didn't bother finishing them. It's quite the contrast compared to last year for me. Maybe there were just more dramas that appealed to me then?

Well, I voted in the categories I could, so that should be fine.

I have awesome sex at night with my dead ex, whom I still love, leaving me tired in the morning because he's that good and my understanding fiancé is leaving me.

Coupled with the bad mudang scenes, I think it wins. God, worst drama this year, so bad it's laughable. I don't think worse ever, but it's up there. (or down there).

I Hear Your Voice, Master's Sun, Nine and Answer Me 1994 had the best acting, though my top drama is Master's Sun--save that one episode which kinda screwed with the series, but I don't blame the writers for that since it was the network's fault.

Biggest surprise for me was I Hear Your Voice.

Apparently, though I'm a rare person for liking dorks like in Lee Soon Shin, whose writing sucked, but the dorks were good. I love dorks. Dorks are fun.

Gu Am Heo Joon I'm betting no one watched, but it was good. Everything I wanted Horse Doctor to do and more. Long, yes, but it's not wasted time.

Is it me, or was the latter half of the year better for dramas?

I like smart dorks, I hate stupid dorks. I am more of a nerd fan though, like in Queen of the Office. I thought LSS was a stupid dork - well she started smart, but lost about 6 IQ points per episode.

Not Lee Soon Shin, herself. The whole adoption thing was messy.

Joon Ho, I thought was a reasonably cute dork. There weren't that many dorks this year...

I do like natural dorks like Seunggi and Kwang Soo (not like crush, but watching them. Running Man *cough*) Lee Minki is definitely a dork, though his acting image isn't like that. (i.e. the roles he plays, he tends to hide it.)

Oguri Shun is at least a Geek, and a bit of a dork, but got married...

Dorks, geeks, nerds are fun to watch on screen and since I'm all three, I kinda like seeing it reflected on screen.

This sageuk junkie loved it. I was very impressed with Kim Joo Hyuk's acting. I started watching it midway out of boredom but I end up enjoying it. I think I'm a little more open minded now when it comes to remake. I loved Heo Joon 2000 and I didn't think I'd enjoy this version but I was wrong.

I hated Horse Doctor but I watched that dang show for Cho Seung-Woo.

Yes, Horse Doctor had that effect. I hated and hated that show, but still came back anyway while crying why. Mostly because I wanted a decent end for the Princess, which, IMO she got cheated out of. She was the most interesting character of the show.

Heo Joon was really good, even with the extension. From beginning to end it delivered with a simple, but effective structure with acting and writing and directing.

Wow, the comments is rising rapidly in less than one day. This is my fourth years voting for Beanie awards. Reading almost all comments here makes my day, I thought that I just voted for My Girl Friend is Gumiho as my fav drama of the year but now I'm moving to I Hear Your Voice.
This post makes me realize that I've been watching a lot of K-Dramas in 4 years. Dramabeans really help me to know K-Drama better and it's like I took an extra class to enjoy my live. I just graduated from high school when I found this website and now I'm working on my thesis while reading DB's recap.
I want to sincerely thank to Javabeans and all DB's writers who's always makes my day.
I'll wait for your review of the year ^^

I didn't vote for Heirs in any category. Why? Because it wasn't nominated in "Worst Sweaters," (which it would have won easily and NOBODY would have disagreed.)

Fashion in Kdramas has baffled me since my first one Boys Over Flowers. Does LMH have anything to do with that? Pretty Boy seems to be coming up with some outlandish fashion too.

My theory - if the man is so pretty we would be blinded in real life just looking at him, then they throw on odd looking clothing to tone down the good looks to something us mere humans can look upon.

Mirae's choice: WORST DRAMA OF THE YEAH.

YUP. Even when a man loves wasn't this bad

Overrated, of course Heirs!

Underrated: The queen classroom, We got married

Best love triangle: Answer 1994

Worst love Triangle: Heirs - all guys are jerks and worth nothing, RUN girl, RUN.

Interesting the amount of votes already, in less than 12 hours close to 8,000. At this rate it will far surpass last year.

Seems like based on the voting, the dramas that were watched the most were Heirs, Master's Sun and I Hear Your Voice with Answer 1994 being the sleeper hit

how about another category for drama with most ridiculous, non nonsensical ending or where nothing got resolved in the end-of which i would have nominated atleast

When a Man Loves
Who are You
Monstar
Blade and Petal
Flower boy Next Door
Shark

I think Secret was the real sleeper hit - I looked back at some of the posts for when it first aired, and it was barely mentioned, and even then it was usually in a bad light. For the first 1 or 2 weeks it was totally off the radar, and then just a couple weeks later half of the OTP posts were about Secret.

1994 I don't think was a sleeper - it had a good start right out of the gate.

Interesting that of the 6 dramas you listed, the only one I actually finished was Shark - and I am still asking myself why on that one.

That you didn;t/couldn;t finish them says alot about how bad they were.

i definitely overloaded on dramas this year-in the jpg of the favorites contenders, i watched and finished 18 of 24.

my favorites(as in ones I found relatively well acted/directed/executed) were
Two Weeks
Incarnation of Money
I Hear Your Voice
Secret

and my sleeper recommendation would be Queens Classroom-i don;t think anyone watched it but i thought it was different than the usual. The teacher's performance caused me to watch the entire Queen Seon Dok.

I shouldn't have seen the J version when I read Queen's classroom was going to air…Not because it's bad, but because I literally get pain in my own body to see the coldness of the teacher as her way to teach (even as that boy gets bloody beaten, and the teacher knows about it). The finale of the J version explains why and stuff, but it doesn't lessen my physical pain from watching it. Certainly one can argue that makes such a good drama, since the impact is that severe to the viewer…but that's what holds me back from watching the K version.

the k version is probably a lot more sanitized than the J version. i think it is probably the same with other dramas that originated from japan like Suspicious Housekeeper, To the Beautiful You and Dr Jin.

Bit of another disappointing year in K-dramaland.

Of the dramas I stuck with, only 2 had quality writing.

"Master's Sun" - like pretty much all Hong sisters romcoms - had it's flaws (but along w/ "Best Love" - one of their most complete dramas), but there was a good bit of great/fun dialogue/scenes throughout.

And the emotional climax of the story did hit hard (even if it came a bit early).

The other one being the unfinished "AM1994" - if it continues as it has been going, may very well be the BEST written K-drama that I have seen.

Just a great depiction of family, friends and everyday life.

The best part of "Gu" were the 1st few eps w/ daddy gumiho and mommy - and it went downhill after that.

How about two new categories for how the show developed as it aired:
Beginnings vs endings: For the better
Beginnings vs endings: For the worse

Nomination: For the worse category
Gu Family Book

Nomination: for the better category
???

I have to support any poll that includes best abs and had only one choice question for mane of glory.

I want more Daddy Gu now. So disappointed with Heirs role.

I hadn't realized I liked so many dramas this year until I got into personal struggle deciding between IHYV, Nine, FBND, MS, TW, GD, HC, Gu, etc.

I don't want Heirs to win any Beanies this year, but alas the mob of fans will dominate this poll I fear.

I was looking for Mi Rae's choice on most disappointing list…what a waste of talented actors…writers completely dropped the ball on this one… I voted for Heirs but I guess most of us knew, it is likely be a mess with all the promotions…Dramabeans thanks you for the witty comments… you guys should write your own drama…:)

Hong sis did redeem themselves with Master's sun..."Big" was such a disappointment, I thought I'd never watch one of their drama ever again...I did boycott it at first but hearing people praising it, I changed my mind and I'm happy I give it another chance! It was great indeed <3

My top 3 :
1/I Hear Your Voice
2/Two Weeks
3/Master's Sun

Honorable mentions to "Secret", "Cyrano Dating Agency" and "Good Doctor"

I didn't vote in much of these. I am surprised I was quite indifferent to many of this year's dramas even the ones that are really popular or loved here on Dramabeans. And some of the ones I thought would just be OK I really enjoyed, hmm.

But I still have a few to watch, too : Reply 1994, Mi-Rae's Choice, Medical Top Team, Basketball, Heirs...I wanna give Empress Ki a chance and Queen's Classroom also!

This year I really liked Two Weeks, All About My Romance, Cheongdam-dong Alice, and Secret was pretty interesting, though creepy, Flower Boy next Door was cute. I'm sure there are more...

Some I got bored with a bit & didn't finish like Nine (I should finish this and I will, eventually) and Master's Sun (love Gong Hyo Jin but not really feeling this one...I will finish eventually) and Who Are You (Not even Kim Jae Wook could keep me and I really like So Yi Hyun but just not the drama really :/), Cyrano Dating Agency.
