Mi-rae’s Choice: Episode 6
by gummimochi
Simply put, I love this episode. Knowing the future can be dangerous, especially when you can never be certain of what the outcome will be. So I love that our hero doesn’t let a pesky prediction get in the way of trying his best anyway, future be damned. Who knew that our serious morning show host would one day put his own neck on the line for the sake of others? Will he be able to save lives, save his career, and get the girl?
Good news: Mi-rae’s Choice saw a small upswing with this episode hitting a 7.5%. Huzzah!

EPISODE 6 RECAP
Everyone gapes in shock as lightning strikes Namsan Tower, causing the spindle to crack. Shin can hardly believe it, even though he’s seen it with his own eyes. Which is when Oppa calls, yelling that he would have filmed this once-in-a-lifetime event if he had known about it earlier.
Ajumma tells him to go ahead, and tells him about a fire at a subway station that will occur the day after tomorrow during the morning rush hour. Giving him the arsonist’s description and how there will be over a hundred casualties, she tells him to cover it as a special feature.
Mi-rae jumps into action, and when Oppa says that it could be a load of crackpot nonsense, she says no—everything Ajumma says comes true. Unfortunately, the police takes her warnings as a drunken rant and sends her away.
Ajumma Mi-rae asks if Shin believes her now, adding that these are true events and not mere predictions. “If it’s true, then we have to stop it!” Shin yells. Despite what she may think, he’s not someone to put lives at risk just to cover a big story.
Jokey PD is shocked when the subway station’s CCTV cameras captures the arsonist (wearing a red hat) on video. It spooks him and the rest of the team, who collectively rack their brains on how to tackle this. Then Se-joo suggests the simpler solution—why don’t they just broadcast it instead?
He enlists Yoo-kyung’s help to obtain permission from the subway officials to film there. She pouts with worry outside the office, but as it turns out, she gets the okay without even lifting one aegyo finger, much to her confusion.
The team is both surprised and impressed at the news, and Shin raises a suspicious eyebrow when he hears that someone had already put in a word for them. He immediately suspects Se-joo and hangs back to ask who’s pulling the power strings behind him.
Se-joo answers that it all worked out anyway: they’ll save lives, have a show, and raise ratings. That last part is the wrong thing to say to Shin at present, but Se-joo remains realistic about how ratings are also important in this industry.
The team spends the next day in disaster prep mode by surveying the station, asking the medics for help, etc. I do love the bit when Jokey PD tests the sprinkler system himself with a lighter as his hoobaes cringe, and deadpans, “It doesn’t work.”
Oppa nearly flips his lid at Shin’s suggestion to come clean about everything they know about the predicted arson. There are lives at stake, Shin argues, and wouldn’t it be awfully convenient that a production team just happened to be at the scene of the crime?
He doesn’t feel right about putting on a show to fool the public, to which Oppa retorts, “And will that go on air?!” Shin counters that it’s their job to relay the truth and stick to their principles, but Oppa shrewdly points out that they’re in this mess in the first place because of him.
Shin catches Oppa at the elevator and agrees to go into the subway himself to intercept the criminal. He won’t let his appearance be sold as mere coincidence however, and he requests that Mi-rae work with him.
Oppa says that’s out of the question, and they bicker about why Mi-rae isn’t an option. Having overheard the tail-end of this discussion, Mi-rae appears around the corner and volunteers to go out into the field.
Shin bolsters that argument by saying she’s been taking “lessons” from him anyway. Mmhm, okay, you keep calling them lessons for now. Oppa has no choice but to let her go, even though he doesn’t like the arrangement.
As they survey the subway station, Shin chides himself for being selfish and thinking this story could be one last shot at saving his career. But Mi-rae points out that he took on the job anyway and even broke his own set of principles for his team.
Shin gets on the defensive in his usual huffy tone, to which Mi-rae wonders why he purposefully makes himself out to be the bad guy and pushing people away. There isn’t a point in getting to know his co-workers on a personal basis when it’s every man for himself, Shin argues.
Mi-rae asks why he seems to be friendly with Yoo-kyung then, and Shin answers that she’s refreshing and he feels comfortable around her. He turns the question on her about Se-joo, and when he gets the same answer, he asks if they’re really dating.
She asks if he’d like it if they were, and he averts his eye while answering that they look good together. Then Mi-rae asks why Shin specifically requested her to help him and if he treats his other hoobae to tours around the building and private lessons like he does with her. Shin answers: “Because you’re special.” Omo.
After a noticeable pause, he adds that he never had to pay so much attention to another hoobae to make sure they did their job right. For a journalist who boasts about the truth, you sure have a hard time admitting your own feelings, eh?
Mi-rae is near tears now, and when she nearly falls into the tracks in her distracted state, Shin pulls her out. Then he says that he’s never taught anyone else (i.e., she’s the only one). Aw.
Ajumma Mi-rae is alarmed to hear that Mi-rae and Shin are out on assignment together. She sets off to find her younger self (it’s so cute how they both have each other saved as “Younger/Older Me” on their phones), and even hangs up on Chairman Lee in her haste.
She finds Mi-rae packing in the office to warn her that going out into the field is too dangerous. She backs down and apologizes, admitting that she didn’t have the foresight to think of the potential victims in her prediction. But why does Mi-rae keep hanging around Shin anyway?
Ajumma Mi-rae confirms that her younger self will be ruined if she marries Shin, “I’m you, after all.” But Mi-rae counters that they’re in fact quite different, and she’s already changed for the better.
It’s Shin and his stubborn personality that’s the problem, Ajumma repeats, and the changes in her own personality won’t influence the future AT ALL. To that, Mi-rae answers matter-of-factly that Shin has changed—why he’s even taken on this story for the sake of his team.
That’s news to Ajumma Mi-rae as she tries to compute the fact that Shin possibly has noble intentions that extends further than himself.
As for Shin, he paces outside the subway entrance, arguing with himself between hoping the arson story will be hit and (literally) slapping himself for wishing for such a horrible thing.
Ajumma Mi-rae issues one last word of warning to Mi-rae before she heads out. She needs to be careful with messing with major events, or she might find herself in a bigger tangled mess. Mi-rae assures her that they have everything under control.
The station manager is alerted about the faulty sprinkler system, and orders the plumber to fix it. The plumber apologizes for overlooking the problem… and then puts on his red hat. Ack, it’s you!!
D-Day. The morning show goes on air without Shin, who gripes over how they chose not to tell the truth like he wanted. Meanwhile, Oppa is a ball of nerves as he checks in repeatedly with everyone at their stations to make sure the location is secure.
Oppa then quietly confers with Ajumma Mi-rae on whether they’ve set everything up at the right station, which is when Ajumma’s voice falters, unsure of whether it was the subway car or the station itself. Uh oh.
At the same time, Shin and Mi-rae are only one stop away from their destination. He reminds her to forgo the broadcast and save the others in a worst-case scenario. And that’s when Red Hat enters the subway car.
Though Shin says it could be anyone, they film him anyway just in case, and watch him fiddle with his backpack. Then the entire car reels in shock as Red Hat pours lighter fluid onto the floor just as Ajumma remembers that it was the subway car. Ohhh crap.
Oppa relays the danger to the team immediately, but it’s too late because Red Hat has already flicked on his lighter and set the car ablaze.
Shin covers Mi-rae out of harm’s way as Red Hat exits, cackling like madman. Then Shin sets off after him with Mi-rae filming behind him with her phone. Ack!!
Luckily the train pulls into the next stop where the production crew is, and the panicked passengers stampede out of the smoky train in droves. It only gets worse from there since both the water supply and sprinkler system is inaccessible while Oppa frantically tries to get ahold of his sister.
Thankfully Mi-rae calls to inform Oppa that she’s fine and that she’s recording the entire thing on her phone as she follows the chase in the station.
Se-joo, meanwhile, tries to ram his way into the locked water tank room just as Yoo-kyung arrives with the keys. What they find inside is the tank handle chained to the pipes, and they get to work to cut through them.
Shin corners Red Hat in a dead end as the live footage broadcasts on air. The rookie announcer covers the story no better than a poor sports commentator: “Will he grab the lighter?” “Oh no, it got taken away!” Ha, I know it’s supposed to be a tension-filled dramatic scene, but it’s still funny.
Red Hat wrestles out of Shin’s grip and threatens them again, but he’s out of ammo and forced to run. Shin gives chase, telling Mi-rae to run, but she crashes into a display that falls on top of her.
Sliding her phone over, Mi-rae sends Shin after their culprit, and with great reluctance, Shin promises to be back soon. Eek, but that open lighter fluid bottle is sure making me nervous.
Shin chases down Red Hat and stalls him long enough to be apprehended by the authorities. He barely takes two seconds before running back for Mi-rae. Hurry!
At the same time, Mi-rae tries to squeeze out to no avail as electrical sparks fly around her, threatening to set the floor alight. Shin arrives and lifts the display so Mi-rae can escape just as the sprinklers turn on.
They both break into smiles of relief as they sit under the sprinklers. Se-joo arrives just then to see them together, and you can almost see his heart break then and there.
When Shin apologizes for throwing her into danger, Mi-rae answers that she’s learned a lot from the experience. Shin says that he’s learned something too: “That you [Mi-rae] can never die.”
By some miracle (or dramaland rule), Shin’s phone still works, and Oppa is utterly relieved to see Mi-rae safe and sound. Then Shin takes over the closing and informs the public truthfully that their team was tipped off about the incident and planned accordingly in advance.
He admits that things quickly turned dangerous, but everything turned out all right in the end. Shin: “The future [mi-rae]… fate… is a lot scarier than anything we can prepare for. But one choice can also change the future. The future isn’t set in stone. Your choice is your future.”
The story is a bona fide hit, and Chairman Lee stews in her office before issuing the order to leave the morning show as is.
Shin and his team go out for a celebratory dinner in high spirits, and he even praises them on a job well done, to their amazement. They teasingly toss out ideas to cover Shin’s marked personality change next, and ha, Mi-rae silently reminds him to smile.
Mi-rae notices that both Se-joo and Yoo-kyung are absent, and learns that Se-joo will be joining them later whereas Yoo-kyung is off at an invite-only chaebol birthday party. Ten bucks says Se-joo is at the same party.
It quickly becomes apparent that despite Yoo-kyung’s reporter status, she clearly isn’t welcomed within the high-society circle. Yoo-kyung scopes out the crowd of celebrities and singers, determined to mingle anyway.
HA, Yoo-kyung’s awkward out-of-place experience just cracks me up as she sneers at the pretentiousness of it all.
Mi-rae is sent out an errand and gets held up by a nightclub employee trying to persuade her for more business. Having followed behind her, Shin intercedes just then, and lays down a nerdy smackdown. It’s… kinda awesome.
As they walk away, the employee curses up a storm behind them, which effectively stirs Shin’s temper. So he marches back and get up in the guy’s face… to give him a talking to about curbing his words.
Then Shin turns to Mi-rae and asks if he did well, like a child seeking praise for his actions, and she tells him that he did.
Shin asks if her hand is okay now, saying that he really wanted to send her out of harm’s way earlier. She asks why, and he answers, “Because [the thought] bothered me.”
Mi-rae becomes aware of how their hands brush each other at that moment, so Shin takes her hand and scoops it into his pocket with his, saying, “We’ll just get rid of that bothersome thought then.” That’s it. I’m done for. Adorbs.
And not far behind them, Ajumma Mi-rae emerges with a watchful eye.
Back at the party, Yoo-kyung cocks her head curiously when she spots Se-joo sitting alone. I’m pretty sure those sunglasses will attract more attention, but whatever. It doesn’t take long for her to put the pieces together in her head as he’s approached by a couple of rich buddies.
Se-joo rises and locks eyes with Yoo-kyung, and he allows her to confirm that the maknae VJ is in fact a chaebol heir.
He meets her at his car, now changed into his casual attire, and Yoo-kyung now addresses him in jondaemal. Her tone makes it clear that they cannot belong in the same social circles anymore, as he confesses his noble intentions to learn about the company from the ground up.
When he asks her to keep his secret, she jokes that she has to or else he’ll fire her. Above all, Mi-rae can’t know about his blue-blood status because she’s too pure and will just run away.
Yoo-kyung scoffs and asks if it’s so bad to have feelings for a rich man. Hm, something tells me we’re not talking about Mi-rae anymore. He simply answers that he’s come across too many golddiggers who have before.
She remains silent in the car, and Se-joo asks if she’s upset about the truth before they join the others. But Yoo-kyung turns around with a wide smile and speaks to him in banmal like before. It’s only after she sends Se-joo on ahead does she let the truth sink in.
Yoo-kyung runs into Ajumma Mi-rae at the convenience store, and they both recognize each other. She helps pick up Ajumma’s things off of the floor, which is when Yoo-kyung asks why the ajumma has Mi-rae’s diary.
Ajumma brusquely answers that that’s her name too, but something pings off Yoo-kyung’s suspicion radar.
Se-joo’s face darkens to see Mi-rae sitting alone. He sits beside her reluctantly, and she thanks him, having heard about his heroic feat with the sprinklers.
He brightens a little at that and hints that it’d sure be nice if somebody gave him a massage for his efforts. Mi-rae obliges with a smile.
Shin returns at that moment and sees the two smiling and laughter together. His face falls.
COMMENTS
What a fantastic episode. Among the many things that I enjoy about this show, I love watching our four leads interact with each other and their subsequent pairings. I think that the show has done a fair job in that area up to this point, and to be quite honest, I’m torn between Team Shin and Team Se-joo. It seemed so easy at the start when Se-joo was the perfect gentlemanly foil to Shin’s hot-headedness, but now that we’ve broke through that confidence to reveal a vulnerable underbelly with a heart for others, I can see how Mi-rae fell for Shin. (The first time, that is. Unless Ajumma Mi-rae had her own future advisor, which would make it the nth time.)
Mi-rae continues to impress me as a heroine time and time again with her steadfastness and stubbornness towards her career and herself. I admire the way she sticks up for herself and take the initiative, a characteristic that was initially buried under her insecurity. At first it was to prove her self-worth, but I like that we see that consistent quality in her as the story progresses. Her general carefree attitude about love (which could make her interactions with each suitor that much more blissful) is a quality I enjoy about her because she has no idea that that’s why both men are drawn to her. I find it delightfully charming for now and dearly hope that doesn’t change.
As the story continues to transform into different versions tweaked by personal choices, it’s safe to say that this specific timeline differs from Ajumma Mi-rae’s reality (time-space conundrums are simply beyond me). That being said, it grounds Mi-rae’s remark that although she and Ajumma are the same person in being, they are quite different. This makes for a jarring experience on a character consistency level when you’ve got one optimistic heroine versus one jaded one and wonder if they’re actually the same person. But I’m intrigued by the exploration of how our futuristic heroine arrived at this shift in perspective that led to her narrow-minded focus on her one-woman mission. And that biased perspective is what makes her an unreliable narrator, who is deadset on one outcome.
Shin is quickly becoming one of my favorite characters, especially within the past two weeks. I love that we’re already seeing some marked changes in his character, and although we have Mi-rae to thank as a main influence for that change, it’s rewarding to see him warm up to his co-workers even though their allegiance to him can turn on a dime. I like that we got to see the transition from his brewing romantic feelings to his denial and the eventual honest admission and expression of how special Mi-rae is. I like that Mi-rae can see past his defenses and call him out on them, and in that same vein, directly challenge his intentions for seeing her outside of work. How ironic that the journalist needs a reminder to be true to all things, including his feelings.

Wow, what an exciting episode! Who expected that? And when Se-joo and aegyo girl were turning on the sprinkler, I kept hoping this would be their big water scene where he'd fall in love with her but nooooooo, once again water leads to Mirae.
I'm in love with Shin's personality and charater. He's such a well-made perfectly created character. Right now I'm tired of the two possible husbands thing. I want to get past that because Shing is obviously the guy she should be with. I'm hoping the whole choice thing becomes mot and Mirae chooses Shin...then we see the aftermath...like after marriage and how present Mirae reacts to his depression, if he gets the idea of true compromise.
Thanks for the recap.

I knooooow! I was like, Se Joo-ah, look at Yoo Kyeong too! I might be in the minority when I say this but Yoo Kyeong is a lovable character. I don't know if it's just my girl crush on Han Chae-ah but I freaking luff her when she's trying to keep a hold onto her unstable position as a reporter by the only means she knows and being a little awkward about it. I was very angry when that male employer in last episode was exploiting her body, felt sad for her when she felt so used afterwards, and cracked up when in this episode she was trying to blend in but kept commenting how weird the birthday party was.
Same here, I'm getting bored with the two suitors idea....Shin is obviously the one for Mirae since her heart leans more towards him and even Ajhumma Mirae's heart races when it comes to Shin.

I'm trusting that writer-nim knows her audience and the beats of a script enough not to keep the two suitor thing going for too long. This is why i am afraid to watch Heirs...I'm just too tired of running around in circles and misunderstandings just to fill up the 13 or 16 episodes.
So I'm thinking the writer is going to move at a quick pace. I could be totally wrong but I wouldn't be surprised to see Mi-Rae either marry chaebol or Shin and we see the fall out. I think if I shake myself from the idea that the end of the drama is WHEN Mirae makes her decision, then all kinds of story possibilities pop up. Mirae marrying Shin, Mirae divorcing Shin, Mirae marrying chaebol, Mirae becoming Anchorman. So they better stop the bouncing between two suitors thing quick.
And yes, I'm liking aegyo girl. I didn't at first. But she is a sweet person and she deserves her happiness in marriage or her unhappiness or whatever without Future Mirae messing it up.

Yeah last two eps has made Yoo Kyeung a character that i find adorable and root for now. I felt her pain when she found out the VJ she liked is now a rich guy that will think she likes him only because he is a rich heir.
I like her flaws of trying to after connections to get higher in her career, still like her honest way she goes after the guy. She has stopped being a simple a aegyo monster to me.
Se-Joo better start looking at her whose heart is showing clear that is for him. Stop being blind or act like you dont know Mirae wants Shin.
Preview next ep shows he will get the cold truth about Mirae not wanting him as a lover, a man.

I agree that Yoo Kyeong is lovable, I think her main problem at this point is that she has been so used for her looks and sex appeal that she has built up a barrier and is afraid to be herself. I think she feels trapped as a sex symbol and does not know how to break out of the box.

That is exactly why i feel for her she is somewhat tragic because being used for her looks has made her into the person she is who is faking the aegyo, looking for connections, easy way out.
Hopefully her feelings, interactions with Se-Joo can bring out more often her real self.

I'm loving MHIYD to pieces...It's fast pace and yet still fleshes the characters so we can completely see right through them..I love all the four leads..YEH is doing a great job as Mirae. LDG is killing the announcer who has strong principles but with a soft spot too. JYH, the boy I used to know in dramas is turning into a man. He is perfect as Park Se Joo.HCA, I love how her character is not the typical superficial bitchy 2nd lead. Lovin how her character was fleshed out by Se Joo. I'm shipping Shin-Mirae/SeJoo-YooKyung couple but still I hate how my heart's going to break when SeJoo be rejected by Mirae..I always fall for 2nd male lead but SeJu just raise it higher so I'm pretty sure I'll fall deeper...Hope the story dont take much time and proceed with the original OTP as I can see Shin-Mirae already falling and YooKyung doesnt notice yet but she's already falling for SeJoo..Now, what's left is for SeJoo to realize that his destiny is just beside him. I like the plot where no matter how Future(annoying) Ajumma interferes, what's destined still happens
.Why not travel back to your timeline ajumma and take Miranda with you so SeJoo can take over the company which I think he will do a great job by leaps and bound. Now, the only thing that upsets me with this drama is I haven't seen a lot bromance from the male leads..I can see potential for them to be good friends and when Se Joo is chairman, he can take back Shin into his rightful announcer place which he trully belongs and fire that incompetent newbie announcer..keke..
The ratings is good news considering Ha Ji Won drama just started..MHIYD Fighting!!!!

I think that this show is way better than suspicious housekeeper because it has more heart-filling moment, character growth, and revelation. S.H. has some mystery about the housekeeper that draws in the audience. I think it's a bit dry. Mirae's Choice is a great show overall. That is just my humble opinion.

Watched the original Japanese drama so I knew it would be a contender; the Korean version getting higher ratings isn't a shock. Just hoping MHIYD does even better next week after getting a ratings boost this week. This ep was my favorite. I love all these characters but this was the first ep that seemed completely full. I loved IHYV because outside of the main plot, the female lead had a job and every week you got a new sub plot related to her job that involved all the leads. It kept the drama fresh each week. The baton was passed to Master's Sun and the same approach was used. Each week, for the most part there was a new sub plot. Outside of the ep with the old man splashing water on Shin, this is the first ep that the whole team was in the thick of it to get a story for their morning show. I want to see that Time Cop finally making his presence known after what happened in this ep. It would be interesting to see if the team stopping this subway fire really will cause something more disastrous to happen in the future. I think Future Mirae giving the team a head start with major headlines each week just might the thing needed to give the broadcast journalism aspect of this show a boost. I love the lovelines, but Mirae bouncing back and forth between both guys won't be enough for this drama when it's already clear since last week that Shin is the man she wants.

After being told about their future, it looks like Shin and Mirae have decided to adopt new ways of seeing and doing things. The recent upheaval and chaos have forced them to be more aware of who they are and who they want to be leading them to take responsibility for their own lives and learning to work with others.
For now, it does look like it's taking a positive turn. Will it last or things might get even more complicated and chaotic? I wonder what's next and I'm definitely waiting in anticipation. :)
Anyway, I particular liked that Se Joo's effort in saving Mirae was recognized and she gets to show her appreciation immediately. There are a lot of Kdramas whereby the lead actress are kept in the dark about it or only finds out much later. Bleh...At least now both guys are still on equal ground.
Future Mirae's interference has changed the present condition (or perhaps accelerated it instead?) and most likely have already altered the future. So, if that's the case, I'm kind of leaning towards Mirae trying something new by choosing Se Joo instead and live another reality. Heehee...Why not take the risk and experience a different life?
But then we've got Shin becoming a better person though still in the process of transformation, however it's touching to see that no matter how the external scenes and circumstances may have changed, his feelings for Mirae didn't. He still falls in love with her. And vice versa as she is clearly more attracted to Shin than Se Joo.
Oh dear, what a dilemma? I like both men. I won't want to be in her shoes. How to choose?

The good thing is that we don't see if Mirae and Shin had any kids during their looooooooong years of marriage. Cause if we did, all bets would be off. We'd be wondering why the heck a woman would unmake her children from one life to create kids from another life just to change her life. Not to mention unmaking chaebol's/aegyo's kids.

So, maybe they did have a kid, & that is who died in the other timeline??? It would make sense that their child would be who she loved most. Maybe Mirae,sr. is trying to prevent Shin from causing their child's death, figuring the child could be born with a different dad, e.g., Se-joo & be safe?

What I like best about this show is how the four main leads are so fleshed out, as gummimochi also pointed out. I think Yoo Kyoung might be one of the better second female leads I've seen in a while. While it seems like maybe I'm in the minority, I've already seen some depth from her, and while she may have done some things that aren't perfect so far (being snippy with Mirae), I'm fine with character flaws so long as she continues to grow as a character, which is what I am seeing. I don't get golddigger vibes regarding her interest in Se-joo--she liked him when he was just a VJ, someone who was kind and thoughtful and considered her as a person, not as a aeygo monster or sex object. And when she found out he was a chaebol, she seemed more torn and confused more than anything.
I like Se-Joo as a second lead, too, but I find Shin a lot more compelling because as we continue along. I don't think he and Mirae are desperately in love yet, and I like that but I definitely feel the chemistry and the longing they have for one another. They are interested, dancing toward maybe falling in love. I love, too, in the previous episode, how future Mirae couldn't help but feel her heart race around him.
I also like how this writer is refreshingly progressive where feminism is concerned. One of my favorite little points from this episode is when Se-Joo is trying to break down the door to the water room and Yoo Kyoung shows up and is like, "You idiot, you thought you could just throw your shoulder into the door and open it? I got KEYS first."

I really do like Yoo-kyung too, and that although she's a reporter (I'm not certain whether she's very well-known or not) she doesn't fit in with the hoity-toity crowd and isn't made of money either. I'm still laughing over that $260 drink bill. That said, I agree that she doesn't seem like a gold-digger either, and I want her to give the benefit of the doubt and think she genuinely fell for Se-joo the first time in a similar way she is now, just as he is.
And the keys thing: HA, that totally cracked me up. For a good few seconds, I thought they would have to scramble to search for the right key out of the dozen on that keychain.

Serious question for you and others who like Yoo-kyung: what do you find likeable about her? I can understand people feeling sympathy for her, to an extent: she's clearly very insecure, and she's grossly sexualized by people in the industry (although one could argue she kind of brings that on herself, such as with the leg-flashing move she pulled when she first met Se-Joo). But what do people find to *like* about her? She's horrible to Mirae, and even people who seem to like her, such as Shin, admit she has no female friends. I'm not being flippant; I'm genuinely curious to know what people find likeable about her.
I do admit to loving that scene with the keys, where you just know Se-Joo is re-living every action movie he ever saw trying to bust the doors down, and she kind of raises her eyebrow like "okaaaaay . . ." and takes out the keys. I thought that scene was nicely emblematic of many male-female interactions :).

I fail to see where she's so utterly horrible to Mirae. She wasn't nice true, but Mirae is no victim and gave back and good as she got. Their little fights are amusing, especially when Mirae called her out on how she was speaking. She's not bullying her or going out of her way to make her work environment bad. So, really what's the big deal? She doesn't have female friends, but most of that is because how she thinks she has to act.
She's pretty caring as well. She was worried about Seju spending too much money on drinks and gave him advice. Plus she's funny. At the birthday party all her little snide comments and reactions were great. She also gets points for not letting SJ interrupt Mirae and Shin and being able to read the mood.

I don't think aegyo girl is so horrible either...but I do think she is like many women who will seek out male colleagues because male colleagues have power. She hasn't tried hanging out with Writer Bae from what I can see. Sure she cares about Sejoo but he's a guy. She has to learn to honor and care for women and women friends.
She does have insight into human emotions though. She has way too much noonchi (as Kimyoonmi would say) which can be a bad thing because it can make folks manipulative. She knows how to read situations perhaps a bit too much and she often uses it for her benefit...with men.
I like her though. She has to grow up nd she will. I dont mind her being flawed.

About two minutes after meeting Mirae she was telling her to stay away from Shin and Se-Joo. Who the heck does that? The lying to Mirae about her and Shin's alleged relationship - also not nice. The fact that Mirae didn't take it lying down doesn't make Yoo-Kyung.
Of course she was worried about Se-Ju briefly -he's one of the guys she's chasing, and she was assessing is financial situation.
As for her being funny, I didn't find much about her snide comments amusing. I enjoy a good sense of humor, but I've never been on board with the kind of humor that comes at scoring points off someone else. Those people at the party may have been a bit pretentious, but they didn't do anything bad to her.
I guess this is just a case of mileage varying. Clearly the show is setting her up as endgame for Se-Joo. And I actually don't have a problem with that long-term. It's just that he seems like a genuinely nice, caring person, and it would be easier to swallow for me as a viewer if we saw her evolving into a nicer person, too, if she's to end up with him.

@faye
You are still slightly exaggerating when you say "terrible" to Mirae. She told her to stay away. Hm, is she making her stay away from both of them? Nope. Has she checked in on her to make sure she's not with them? Nope again. Does she pester to guys to stay again... No? So basically she just talked big and didn't do anything else.
Eh, honestly I really don't think she was assessing the finical situation. You are hard on her lol She was giving advice as a senior. If she was all about the money should wouldn't have paid (since that takes money from her ya know).
And you asked, you don't have to like her! :D
I personally think she makes Seju more interesting than he actually is. He can also be his broody sunglasses in the dark self with her.

Well, does not having female friends make a woman totally unlikeable? Who knows...she may not have friends because the female colleagues only see her aegyo self and think, "Ugh, she sure likes to butter people up. What a fake." But we as the audience can surely see that she has her difficulties in the workplace and that she only puts on the aegyo because that's what Yoo Kyeong feels is the best way to survive. After all, the station is made up of mostly men who hold more power than the women. So when she tries to assert common sense into a reporting scene like any sane person would (ie, "What does showing my legs have to do with falling leaves?"), she's immediately discarded without a second thought. Only when she offers her body up, behaves demurely, and is a yes-woman is she given any consideration. How can such a struggle make her unlikeable person?
Yoo Kyeong brings upon herself how she is sexualized in the industry? Well, first of all, she had been doing the aegyo act for a long while so she has the perception that she can't be anything without it. With the aegyo came the sexualized part especially when moments like reporting scene mentioned above must have happened many times in her life. She was first looking at her phone in the scene with Se Joo. Then she caught him looking at her legs. and frowned. Experience taught her that men only see her as a sexual object and full of aegyo so she brought out that sensuality out of habit like she puts out chopsticks and napkins out of habit once a man's attentions are on her. It doesn't make her unlikeable but a bit blindsided.
Also, when was she horrible to Mirae? Yoo Kyeong has only shown petty jealousy except in the beginning when she and Mirae met each other for the first time and Yoo Kyeong was talking down to Mirae for no apparent reason. But really....that was one instance only and it wasn't even anything worth the description of "horrible." Rude? Yes. But not horrible.
Personally, like i said before, I find Yoo Kyeong adorable. She has that innocent, sweeter side that is hidden under the struggling survival side. She's not actively trying to hurt someone and rather seems like a normal person than a catty second lead.

"Well, does not having female friends make a woman totally unlikeable?"
I think not having a friend from half the human race does make you kind of suspect. And maybe it's my own bias, but every single woman I've known who's said "I don't have any female friends" turns out to be that way because of her behavior.
As I said in the above post, I guess this is just one of those things I have to accept. I don't find her likeable at all (certainly "innocence" is something I would never see in her), but others clearly do. I'll just FF her scenes.

I gotta say though that We haven't seen any flaws in Chaebol/VJ yet. I mean we can forgive his pretending to be someone else... he's a rich guy after all and he wants to understand how the world works. But seriously, does this guy have no flaws? He wears sunglasses in a dark club and looks slightly like a douche? That has to be a flaw. Though seriously, I think he's supposed to have a cold side. I suppose that's good considering the business he's in though.
Him mentioning ratings in this episode was not something your typical nice guy would do. I do think we'll see more of his flaws when he's with YK. He's so smitten with Mirae you aren't going to see anything but him super wonderful to her.
Let's just hope he doesn't get clingy like some 2nd leads tend to do.

@Daydreamer I love your comment.
YK is just acting out the role that she believes she has to play to get along in the industry and I think that the guys she's ACTUAL friends with (Shin and SeJoo) are people who know that she's acting out other men's little aegyo fantasies and they also know that she knows that they know and don't judge her for it. That's why Shin says she's direct and cool. She's a realist and though Shin is very much an idealist about the type of reporting he wants to do, he understands her working towards her goal with whatever tools she's got. PLUS I haven't seen her actually offering sex to get ahead, just a little puff to the men's egos and many women who have found themselves blocked by men's egos have to make a decision: walk away or talk the talk that get's you ahead. She chose to stay and change the way she speaks to guys to get ahead. Because as I see it she's not even that comfortable with the aegyo shizz she has to pull.
And as a girl myself I dislike hearing comments like " she brings it upon herself" that's getting a little too close to slut shaming and a half a step away from saying things like " she was raped because of the way she dressed."
One might even argue that maybe because she hears stuff like that, maaaaybe that might be the reason she doesn't have girlfriends you know? because sometimes women can be quite mean to each other and sometimes it's men like KS and SJ who can see further away from just her clothes and her act. In the course of my 20+ years I've had much fewer girl friends and many more guy friends overall pretty much on a 1:5 ratio at any given moment. Why? because sometimes you can just feel the judgemental thoughts being beamed your way by girls even when you're just being friendly with guys without a flirtatious thought on your mind.

@ Faye: Alright, we'll just have to agree to disagree. Also, when some women say, "I don't have any female friends," I understand the knee-jerk reaction would be to think that they're a bit of a snob or a slut or whatever...but it would do better to probably understand why they don't have female friends. What if they're just better at understanding guys? Does a woman really need to be judged by the gender of her company?
@ lemondoodle: Yep, the women are most likely not giving her a chance either because of their knee-jerk reaction to her aegyo. Kinda like what Mirae did when she saw Yoo Kyeong for the first time in tiny shorts, oozing with aegyo. Of course, part of it was because she was feeling a bit jealous over Shin's attentions towards YK and rumors of them possibly dating.
@ Min: Totally agree with what you said. Shin and Se-Joo can be real friends to Yoo Kyeong because they're not into her aegyo and understand that it's not really an essential part of her. I feel Mirae can be a friend too if she lets her initial bias and jealousy go, looking to YK for who she really is. That would actually be really nice.

Agree with a lot of the YK comments - I see her "suspicion" of women as being that she regards them as potential rivals who may pull her down:
(1) because it's a cutthroat world/industry anyway
(2) because she's smart enough to know that her chosen "aegyo" style will only work on men, and alienate most women (ie half the world's population).
As @lemondoodle said, she's just "talking big" as a survival measure - in her own words.
It's a route she obviously feels she has to take, but that doesn't mean she likes it, or that it fits her true personality. That's why I for one am excited by all the possibilities for the future that have opened up for all 4 characters when Future Mi-rae meddled.
I see a lot of similarities between her and Kim Shin - they're both loners who are perceived as cold and ambitious by others, but they're just trying to be the best and achieve in their careers on their own strengths (well, mainly), and they both seem to aspire to high standards of professionalism, which other people interpret (like Jokey PD and Oppa) as "being a snob" or "being a pain".
Kim Shin even said something along these lines to Mi-rae in this episode: "Even if people become close with me, they'll just ask me for favours. So it's better being alone."
Except that now, Mi-rae is making him want to be human ...:)

I don't see where she has been horrible to Mi Rae. I think she actually likes her, but also sees her as a rival. I think the scene where she said to leave them alone under the water sprinkler showed that she is not the usual evil 2nd lead that we are all so tired of.
I see Yoo Kyung as a lot more vulnerable than she lets on to be, she has built up a shell as a barrier to all the sexism that exists. She wants to be a real reporter, but keeps getting forced into being eye-candy.

Oddly enough, I felt the reaction you have for YK for SJ! I don't understand why everyone is so conflicted b/w the male leads. Ep 6 has showed me that Shin is clearly the right choice for Mirae. He's grown and changed for her, and has put up no false pretenses like Se-joo has.
Honestly, Se-joo is extremely twisted for pulling the sheet over Mirae's eyes because he wants to "maintain her innocence" (which is pretty anti-feminist if you ask me). He also almost became a douche for getting between Shin and Mirae's moment together (which thankfully, YK stopped).
Se-joo operates under the assumption that his power gets him whatever he wants when he wants it; be it the mask of being "poor" or the girl he "wants." Hopefully YK/MR will teach him a few things about how hard it is to make a name for oneself when one is not privileged. Clearly SJ doesn't know what it's truly like being among the layman worker, because he would have not made many of the decisions he did otherwise.

I've been saying this since ep. 2 and I got yelled at by Yongwha fangirls for being an anti. lol I seriously don't get why people are conflicted. Shin and Mirae are clearly the superior pairing. Shin is also a much better character, and actually a nicer guy despite his outward attitude.
The I must protect her innocence! thing really goes against the theme of the story. She's Mulan, she doesn't need a prince to protect her. :D

@lemondoodle:
That dress-up scene was the moment I totally and completely hopped on the Shin ship. The way he didn't flinch when taking up traditionally "domestic female" duties (sewing), and how he said that Mirae should be Mulan, the woman who saved a country, not Cinderella who needed a man to save her, confirmed for me completely and firmly that he is one of the best male leads I've ever seen in K-drama. Ever.
Shin doesn't want to be the hero; he wants to follow his principles and morals, and love a woman for who she is. I was impressed by how he was able to leave Mirae behind at her word (confident she could protect herself) and continue to chase the perp. That's respect right there. I even liked how he didn't butt in with the douche bag until things looked to get really out of hand, and what does he do? Give the best verbal smackdown ever...and then ASKS FOR MIRAE'S APPROVAL for his actions. Swoon.
I honestly could spend an eternity explaining why Shin is the better guy...finally, a male lead who GETS IT. Girls don't want Prince Charming. They want an equal and trustworthy partner. Se-joo doesn't even come close.

JYH already got his lead role in Heartstrings, that's his second time acting and he got it already
actually right after You're Beautiful and after his debut, he's already offered lead roles but at that time he wants to concentrate on doing music only. i remember reading that he was in consideration for the lead role in Sungkyunkwan Scandal and Playful Kiss but it doesn't materialized ( KBS, MBC and SBS all three have soft spot for Yonghwa, lol i think he wins over some people's heart there)
i'm happy that he went back to second lead role because he really have so much more to learn about acting before he can carry the weight of main lead role

Well there are a couple
1) the main lead is an experienced "anchor" who got cut because he's "too old" - now tell me would Yonghwa look "too old" for anything right now? He's got a baby face that makes me want to pinch his cheeks like an old granny when in actuality we're pretty much the same age give or take a year.
2) The character is supposed to be going through an important mid-career crisis... again Yonghwa would no way be believably mid anything.
3) Lee Dong Geun is a very good actor, he's got experience and presence that's smoldering. Yonghwa is just now starting to come into his smoldering powers. And he's learning a lot just by being with such great actors like Lee Dong Geun and Eun Hye
4) Yoon Eun Hye's Mi Rae is supposed to older than the young VJ Se Joo. Lee Dong Geun couldn't possibly be younger than Yoon Eun Hye... he'd look akward wanting to act like a dongsaeng when he's oppa.
5) And I think in a drama like this second lead is no scoffing matter! He's an important part of the story and he's doing a really good job at it. It's important to start from somewhere we can't all be Generals there have to be soldiers.

In K-dramaland its all about seniorism or age. On that note I don't think YH will stand many chance on playing a lead role if there's still someone that'll be more experienced or famous as an actor playing in the same drama... Not to mention LDG is a box office hitter, at least in my country he is, many of my friends still obsessed over him after watching "my boyfriend type B" (not me, for me it's Yoon sama forever though. Maybe because I had the same situation before but you can tell that she likes him and not for his money but just for him. It's just so adorable and beautiful that I can't wait for the two of them to develope their loveline. I'm shipping them so hard :D
I like how the future and present are so different. Like the two couples in the future (or past ? O.O) fell in love at first sight and everything went smooth but here, they talk to each other, saw each other's flaws and that's why, FMR interfering with them isn't such a bad thing because all of them began to change/mature ... Especially Mi Rae and Shin. I'm loving how realistic and smooth is their evolution. They may one of my favorite characters ever.
Yoo Kyeong is my favorite second female lead ever. Not only she made me cry but she is the sweetest and cutest girl ever. I don't even know how some people may dislike/hate her. Sure, she is the type that most women hate because she is mostly seen as a sex object and all but because of this, I'm loving her. She has flaws but she doesn't act unrealistically. Gosh', I think I became a fan of Han Chae Ah lol. I'm just freakin'ly fangirling over her. It's insane !
And I'm glad that Yong Hwa showed great improvement through this role and drama. Maybe doing teen dramas didn't help his acting skills at all lol. Granted, his role of the nice chaebol isn't that hard nor he is outstanding but he does a goog job and isn't that awkward anymore so I'm happy. Plus, I'm shipping Se Ju and Yoo Kyeong, gotta love who are played them, right ?
Thanks for the recap and yeaaah for the ratings ^^ (I wouldn't be sad that Empress Ki took the first place. MBC got a long list of sucking saeguk dramas this year so it may not be that long until korean viewers realize that :D)

Glad to see more love for Han Chae-ah. It's so weird...I'm a girl and straight as straight can be but I think she's really beautiful (I get a little mesmerized by her looks, haha) and find her excellent in her second lead roles. She either outshine the female leads (ie, Gaksital) or match up to them in terms of intrigue (ie, Mirae's Choice). I really wish one day she could get a lead role.
But yeah, I like her Yoo Kyeong and would love to see her get Se-joo. This is the first time I'm so invested in the second leads' love story....usually I don't care whether they end up together or not...I just want them to stop meddling in OTP's affairs, lol. But here....it's like getting two good love stories at the price of one. Me likey. :P

I agree 100 percent to all that you wrote so beautifully about Yoo-Kyeong. This girl has got my heart as well and I am really interested to know how she wins over Se-Joo. She is very realistic as a character. In some ways, both Se-Joo and Yoo-Kyeong need each other. I don't think Mi rae will treasure Se-Joo as much as Yoo-Kyeong will coz she needs him more. Similarly, I think Se-Joo can be more his real self with Yoo-Kyeong than with Mi rae. And you know, he will need a girl like Yoo-Kyeong, the survivor, to deal with his grandmother and survive. She is the best woman for the job. All in all, both are lonely people who want someone to see their real selves. A perfect couple for me!

While watching Mirae’s Choice every Monday & Tuesday, I veer between excitement and trepidation.
New choices are made in each episode by either Present Mi-Rae, Shin, Se-joo, and/or Future Mi-Rae.
Episode 1:
Future Mi-rae says: “An evil fate is still fate. You always meet whoever you’re supposed to meet. So that’s why… destiny and fate are scary.”
Episode 6:
Kim Shin says: “The future [mi-rae]… fate… is a lot scarier than anything we can prepare for. But one choice can also change the future. The future isn’t set in stone. Your choice is your future.”
Once it became evident that Mi-Rae and Shin are the OTP, I had planned to refrain from commenting until the end. With episode 6…that went out the door.
I dread the upcoming train wreck bound to happen between Mirae (Gold-digger label since she knows he is an heir/Chaebol as a result of Future Mi-Rae) and Se-joo (undercover boss/hidden heir to YBS/Chaebol). No point in expecting or hoping that Mi-rae & Se-joo will truly share/show all of themselves to each other now on their own accord. That only happens with scenes between Mi-Rae & Shin or Se-joo & Yoo-Kyung.
Being on the losing team is not fun and it is somewhat depressing to watch episode after episode reiterate that Mirae will ultimately choose Shin. I feel a sense of sadness each time Se-joo is basically friend zoned and Mirae’s constant attraction to Shin is prominently showcased.
After Episodes 1 & 2 aired, I thoroughly wanted Na-Mirae & Park Se-joo to windup as the OTP in this drama. It actually felt possible that the 2nd lead had a high probability of winning the heart of Mirae.
What really stood out to me was that he totally accepted her burn scar (imperfection) and seemed to think of it and her attitude towards it as a badge of honor.
“There is nothing more rare, nor more beautiful, than a woman being unapologetically herself; comfortable in her perfect imperfection. To me, that is the true essence of beauty.”―Steve Maraboli
However as Episodes 3 – 6 aired, it was apparent that Mirae’s heart & attraction was toward Kim Shin.
As Emily Dickinson said, “the heart wants what it wants or else it does not care.”
In Episode 6, the images/scenes that really stand out in the forefront for me are the following:
• Se-joo’s initial reaction to the news that the fire will start in the subway car and his rush to the water tank room.
• The look on Se-joo’s face as he tries his hardest to break the chains wrapped around the water tank.
Yes Shin finally came back for Mirae and lifted the fallen advertisement sign off of her. But, if you compare the desperation/ distress/anguish of facial expression between both men, Se-joo’s was really manifested.
Probably in minority opinion here, but I wanted Se-joo to cockblock Shin and Mi-Rae during the sprinkler scene. He should have gone to Mi-rae and not held back showing her how concerned he was for her safety. As a 2nd lead action, this was probably the nail in the coffin for him and their chance at a relationship. It was a turning point that will come back to haunt him. (For those that watched Monstar, all the cockblocking that Jung Sun-Woo did when Yoon Sul-Chan was around Min Se-Yi was a good thing and definitely added to the love triangle. It forced Yoon Sul-Chan to step up his game due to real competition.)
Many have mentioned the subtle changes and difference of Shin from the initial episodes till now. Well, we have seen several instances of Se-joo struggling to balance his creative side (filmmaker/acknowledger of the importance of art) with his business side as the heir to YBS. After all in this day and age, television stations are in the business of making money.
I don’t know the last time I felt Second Lead Syndrome like this before…I hate it. What is it about Jung Yong-Hwa this time around? I am familiar with his past roles in You’re Beautiful and Heartstrings. I wasn’t affected like this.
Fascinating Aspects & Hardships of the 4 Leads :
Creative/Artist Types
Mirae’s desire to pursuing her passion for writing and producing.
Breaking away from the shelter of her brother in order to stand on her own as an independent woman.
Episode 4
Mi-rae asks, “You want me to live my whole life depending on men? Isn’t that how you ended up like this?”
Se-joo’s desire for film and cinematography.
The freedom to pursue his creative side while balancing his Chaebol inheritance.
Breaking away from his grandmother’s desire for him to run the family businesses.
Journalism Careers
Kim Shin with his journalism ethics, standards, and principles.
• Accuracy and standards for factual reporting
• Harm limitation principle
• Presentation
• Self-regulation, etc.
Seo Yoo-Kyung dealing with gender inequality as a woman in the industry.
• Blatantly using her aegyo for airtime/jobs and advancement
• Only being allowed to use half of her talent as an attractive woman
• Overcoming how women are depicted (the glamorous sex kitten) on entertainment television and film
It is highly possible that two creative types can be right for each other end up together. Likewise, it is possible that two professional journalists can be right for each other and end up together.
At the end of the day, it is the prerogative and story of writer Hong Jin-Ah to take us in this direction. I am enjoying the feminist aspects of Mirae’s Choice and realize that I am just along for the journey/ride writer Hong Jin-Ah is taking us on.

I find cockblocking sooo obnoxious. Let the couple have their moment and move on. Even if I don't ship it I want it to happen and then we can move on. Cockblocking it just delays everything and then we have to do it again. Shin or Seju don't need to "step up their game" since it's not a contest and Mirae isn't the prize at the end.
There isn't a moment where they can honestly just be together and figure things out a 3rd party is constantly butting in. Shin deserved his moment just like Seju got his during the date and got his thanks at the end (which was nice since 2nd leads rarely get thanks for doing things)
That whole scene was not about Seju's feelings. He was worried, but he didn't go through what they just did. So, the fact that he was worried didn't need to be told to her right then.
About Seju/Mirae and Shin/YK - they could work, but I like them both having opposites to balance them out.

I think he can within reason, but that moment was kind of theirs? It's like Shin showing up to Seju's fake apartment to interrupt their date (tho that won't happen obviously....) Both couples need their moments or else we just keep repeating the same stuff.

Oh wow, I applaud your detailed insight. I tuned into this drama at first mainly because it's frickin Lee Dong Gun. He's back ladies! But then I was interested when FMR force MR to study to be civil servant. That right there served me. She wanted the better future for herself. Although come episode after episode and FMR looks more like shallow gold digger, but we can also see all lead characters development. Especially Shin and Mirae. But it was not pretty clear either huh, who is our OTP in this story? I really hope they stay the same

I'm also hyped over the second leads. Shin-Mirae are great but the second leads are a bit more interesting at the moment.
Maybe it's because Shin-Mirae mutually like each other so at this point they only have to express their feelings properly whereas in the Se-joo/Yoo Kyeong ship, only one half has feelings while the other doesn't yet so there's more of a struggle. And frankly, romance stories are always most interesting when the people are falling in love rather than when they are mutually in love and start dating away.

I loved all that you wrote about Yoo Kyeong. I love her. I think she is one of the most realistic k-drama female characters I have seen. As of now, I am more excited for the second lead couple. Han Chae Ah is just so awesome. I loved her in All My Romance and here also, her character has shades of her AMR character, but this one is far more interesting. I do hope that the scriptwriter also shows why Se-Joo and Yoo Kyeong are made for each other than Se Joo- Mi Rae coz they were one of the fated couples.
Just loved how she was so practical in the crisis and worked hard along with Se-Joo which shows that if she is allowed to do her job, she can be a success in it. I think it is amazing to get a female character like this. Why can't they write female leads like this? They don't have to be perfectly good all the time. Just make us understand why they behave the way they do.
I am so on board the Se-Joo/Yoo Kyeong ship. I think Yoo Kyeong and Se-Joo's dinner scene was one of the most beautiful scenes of this drama for me and both of them played it so well.

I loved this episode! Obviously nothing drastic is going to happen to any of the leads but I was really tense during the whole intercutting between Shin/Mi-rae and Se-joo/Yoo-kyung scenes in the subway. Very effective. Also hilarious the way Yoo-kyung has the foresight to get the keys to the sprinkler room while Se-joo rushes off to break his shoulder on the locked door. Yoo-kyung is really one smart, practical and capable woman who can go far in her profession if she just loses the aegyo and starts cultivating a few strong female friendships.
It's clear to me that Shin and Mi-rae are going to be together in any time line. The way they gaze at each other under the sprinklers so even Yoo-kyung knows not to break in is magical. These two are falling into each other.
But Oppa seems to have rushed them into marriage too soon in the original time line. He's certainly been all about getting Mi-rae married off and this is the first episode (I think) that he specifically doesn't mention that Mi-rae needs to get married. Something is up with Oppa and we don't quite know what just yet. In the first time line Mi-rae doesn't understand Shin's job, his stern uncompromising nature and also his high ideals about the role a reputable journalist plays in a democracy. But now she does. They work together as a team on the job as they never did in their marriage. He's teaching her how to be a journalist and she's teaching him how to be a human being.
I absolutely love what is happening with the second leads. It's so refreshing. Se-joo sees Yoo-kyung frolicking in the water and instantly projects all his longing for softness, freedom and purity on to her. His parents are dead, he's motherless and he's been raised by a woman who's probably been more of a chairman than a mother to him. It is understandable that this is what he is looking for and this is what he is going to project onto the first available woman who triggers this deep need. It is understandable but it will be disastrous for both of them. In the original time line, Yoo-kyung is essentially a gold-digger. She hasn't learned any other way of being. She is going to be whatever Se-joo wants her to be but sooner or later the mask is going to fall and they are both going to be miserable. Just as unhappy as Future Mi-rae and Future Shin, except with money.
Se-joo does the same with Mi-rae in the new time line but I think Mi-rae is a woman who will never be satisfied to be merely a projection of some male ideal. She's too honest for that. She's never going to pretend to be she's something she's not just to get a man, especially now. But how great for Se-joo that the woman he picks to project his anima onto is like this. He is going to learn a lot about himself from her and is going to end up with a really good friend.

I really hope that's where it's going with SJ and YK, but I think it will ultimately be a romantic pairing. I don't know. I just don't see them falling in love in this timeline. Also, I still wanna know about how they fell in love in the original timeline, because her personality is the same. And while, she's definitely not a clear-cut "bad guy," she can hardly be classified as good either. Something about her just irks me, so I hope she fixes whatever it is that rubs me the wrong way to get her redemption or whatever.

I also thought this whole show was fantastic.
I cried the most when Oppa finally got to talk to MR after the fire, and I cried a little when Shin went back for her.
Let's talk about Oppa vs Shin.
First timeline, and even now, they are adversaries. The repercussions got more intense in the future. Whatever happened that FMR teared up seeing Oppa, had to do with Future Shin somehow.
Oppa and Shin's budding and possible friendship has me very interested. I like how they push each other to compromise and how they are influencing the other. Something that I don't think ever happened before. The fact that there is rapprochement right now is changing their dynamic which should ease whatever horrible thing FMR is worried about.
My prediction is Mirae's Choice was/would have been/ will be between Oppa and Shin - whatever it will be - and FMR ends up regretting that choice. That is why FMR is so sorry to Oppa and angry at Shin.

I don't trust Future Mi Rae - I find it hard to believe that Shin who has displayed honor, integrity and courage could become a wastrel who makes his wife miserable. I think she is making up a story to drive Mi Rae away from Shin. Maybe Future Mi Rae had to make a choice between saving Shin and saving Oppa, and she chose Oppa? I feel she was directly involved in the Ominous Event that led to the death of possibly Oppa, and she is twisting everything to make herself the innocent grieved party and heaping all the blame on Shin. I look at her and I can't believe she is Mi Rae because she is all bitter and twisted and unhappy, but then I look at her hair, the right side (from my viewing angle) of which are two neat rows of crimped hair, and it's like Young Mi Rae is still there somewhere, buried deep deep down beneath that hard bitter shell, valiantly battling Future Mi Rae's attempts to iron out all the hope and life and vitality in her life.

I mean *she chose Shin*? Oppa dies because of her choice so she blames Shin for his death for putting her in a position where she has to choose between her brother and her husband. To prevent Oppa's future death, she decides that she and Shin should never be together.

When Anchorman and Mirae are sitting under the sprinklers and Se-Joo runs to see if Mirae is ok, it is only natural that Se=Joo run to her. That the writers had to throw a person in the way to stop Se-Joo was a CHEAT! Clearly, writer has her Shin bias and is tilting the scale in his favor. For what reason would someone stop Se-Joo who to all appearances is her boyfriend from running to Mirae so that anchorjerk could have some special time to hit on her ... in the middle of a fire and live broadcast no less. Pfft. Wrong, wrong, wrong!
Not that I think a lot of Mirae either with her "I'll date them both" and "I won't listen to my older self because I know better" attitudes. Spunky, yes. Hubris. Arrogance. Greed. Not any attributes I particularly admire.
The fact is we all know Mirae is wildly attracted to Shin, and there is no real doubt who she will end up with. It makes any triangle uninteresting. Mirae has made her emotional choice, and any waffling which hurts Se-Joo who she only feels "comfortable" with but no attraction is just time I don't want to have the painful experience of sitting thru.
I am disappointed, because I like elements of this story, but I can't see any outcome for Se-Joo that will be pleasant. To pair him with that reporter is a crime. To make him woo a woman who is going to marry Shin is a crime. I don't know if I can keep watching, I am so upset.

What coworkers have seen is Se-Joo being kind, hanging out with her, laughing. They heard Shin yell about coworkers dating. They heard the rumor that Shin is about to get engaged to the reporter. They have seen Shin yelling at Mirae. So from outward appearances to her coworkers as of midway thru episode 6, it does appear that Se-Joo the VJ is courting Mirae and it is not surprising for him to run to check on her well being after she was in a fire. jmho

Thank you...
The way this drama was initially promoted, I thought both the 1st and 2nd lead would equally have a chance to win the heart of Mi-rae. Wasn't that the point of the title: Mi-rae's Choice AKA Future Choice AKA Marry Him If You Dare.
Obviously the opposite is now apparent (the same choice will be made). If so, why the need for future to past time travel, alternate timeline, and the illusion of a different choice in husband the 2nd time around?

Oh dear, the male lead have the upper hand in the relationship with the main female.. shocking.
I really don't know what people think SJ would change if he ran there. He'd just appear more desperate than he is already starting to appear. Its' not like she's going to fall in love with him because he's worried. Ruining a Shin/Mirae moments also isn't going to stop them from falling in love.
And by no appearance other than Shin (the guy who is totally jealous) is Seju her boyfriend and he does not have special rights to butt in to her private moments. Though if you want to talk about boyfriends, people thought Shin was her boyfriend so why is Seju trying to get in between the two of them (no, I'm not being serious).

I'm not sure how I feel about this drama ... especially this ep. I can't really understand her. Mi-rae's future self came to tell her what is wrong and how to change it so she won't go back down the same path. All the 2013 Mi-rae does is whine and complain. I couldn't stand it. I don't know if this is Mi-rae's character or YEH just likes to complain and act helpless all of the time for all of her characters. And I really disliked the way they filmed the part in the subway. The whole scene looked so unrealistic and awkward. I think your reading your recaps are better than actually watching the show. Can someone tell me why they think YEH is a good actress? Yeah, I share most of your feelings about this episode. I think Mirae is the most ill-written character of the lot. I mean, she is so confused half the time and just jumps from one thing to the next as per the script writer's intentions. For one thing, I find the whole premise ridiculous. Really, in 2050, is the only way a woman can survive is by marrying a chaebol? Is that the only reason why someone has to time-travel? What about getting a divorce for god's sake. As per Reply 1994, people in Seoul were getting divorced right then. And here in 2050, that doesn't seem even an option.
Shin, Se-Joo and the Yoo-Kyeong all seem to have consistency as characters, but Mirae is all over the place. I loved YEH in Coffee Prince, but in this, I feel she is doing the same things in a different way. She acts too cutesy when she is supposed to be a 32 year old woman. None of the maturity of her age comes across in her character, so I guess it is mainly the script's fault that Mi rae comes across like this. Yeah, I can understand 32 year olds can be immature, but they shouldn't look like 20 year olds in everything they do. Who can say how far Mi rae believes in the ahjumma? She is still playing like a kid n talking about two-timing n all when it is her future at stake. If I was in her place, I would be at least a bit more concerned about the way things are happening, at least try to take control at some point rather than let things just happen to me. I wish they would have written Mi rae's character better than just limit her to the innocent out of luck hardworking girl who somehow suddenly develops a talent at something. Kim Shin is a man who is mature for his age, but Mi rae seems like a child woman.
But the main problem is with the script writer who as far as I can see has not imagined her future world well. First imagine the future well and then time-travel. The train station scenes were so badly shot.

Exactly! Mi-rae is a child woman. If she was written this way, I guess I can't really say YEH is doing a poor job. The personalities are so different b/w the 2013 Mi rae and the future Mi rae. I just can't believe the story. Plus, I'm getting very annoyed with futre Mirae being so secretive about someone dying or whatnot. I mean, you pretty much told the whole world that you can tell the future, why can't you just finally spit out who died and what made you come to 2013? Maybe this way, your 2013 self can understand and stop calling you crazy.
The only thing good about this show is LDG.

Totally! I too can't believe the future MR is the present MR. She doesn't seem to share anything with her. She can't even understand her. If it was me going back, I would know things about my younger self that could help me to manipulate her, right? But the FMR seems to be a totally different person, who has no clue what present MR is thinking. She is more like MR's mom come back from the future. They should not keep the suspense till the end, for it is pointless. If the future MR had told the present MR more about her future, right from the beginning like how her husband ruins her n all, rather than saying don't go to YBS or change the lane, she could have prevented some things from happening.
I believe YEH can do better in some scenes n not take the easy way out by acting like some of her previous characters, but that said, I don't think there is any real meat on the character for her to dig into. True, Mi Rae is far better than the cinderella type characters, but they haven't given her anything that makes her interesting on her own other than doing the cute things. She shines only when she interacts with other characters n not when she is alone. Her growth arc from being content with her life to trying to find her calling could also have been done much better since her choice is supposedly the centre of the show.

I hate that future Mirae doesn't just flat out say what she means to Mirae. It makes no sense that she wouldn't. who speaks in riddles to someone when you want them to do something? Especially when that person is yourself. Though I guess that would mean the mystery of the show would be over.

I am really enjoying this drama. I felt a bit of a letdown when Master's Sun ended, but I think Mirae's Choice is going to take care of that nicely. The characters are developing well, and each episode is leaving me wanting to know more. I'm enjoying the feminist slant to the storylines too. And the free will vs. fate question is great! It makes me suspect the writer has an education background in philosophy. This episode brought Mirae's Choice up to drama crack level for me!

I don't understand why some people are having difficulty in choosing the OTP...its pretty clear that shin-mirae are the main OTP. Mirae is not AT ALL interested in seju as a partner! She only has eyes for Shin so why are people shipping mirae-seju? Its ok to feel bad for seju but wanting him to end up with someone who does not love him...i dont get it. I'd rather want him to end up with Yoo Kyung who seems to like him atleast! I find her more interesting n prettier than Mirae. Mirae has been getting on my nerves for some reason. I find her boring...I'm really disappointed with her character n it seems like the writer is too busy in making Shin perfect(I like him since ep1 btw) that shes totally neglecting Mirae. Its my first time liking the second lead girl more than the lead girl so i hope we see more of yoo kyung in the next 10 episodes.

I don't get why Seju fans wants him with someone who is clearly not into him no matter how hard she tires (and really Seju has been given many more moments than Shin has so far and a real alone time date). I guess because she's YEH and the lead it's all right. It also helps its who he wants so they want him with her.

Please don't make a generalization that Yonghwa's fans want him with Mirae. I'm his fan and I definitely ship him with Yookyung. And I know a lot of his fans that felt the same. I agree that Yookyung is a much more interesting character than Mirae. She's pretty, smart, independent and works hard to get where she is even if that means resorting to use aegyo(not that I agree to that). But yeah, she's a likeable character and definitely suits Seju more than Mirae.

lol I didn't mean all, but a lot do and I didn't mention Yonghwa. :D I get it too since I actually like YK more than Mirae but since I like Shin and he likes Mirae so I want him with her. It's a common thing.

Why do people have to bring down another's pairing to uphold their own? Even if you don't ship it, don't just dismiss the reasons why other people might like it as if it weren't valid. To be honest, I don't get why people like Kim Shin so much more than Seo Joo and don't understand how people could not like Mi Rae.
Mi Rae is nerdy girl whose pursuing the career she likes. She went from that dead end job that she hated, to living each day enthusiastically and freely. She wasn't sure which guy she loves more and decided to hang out with them both before making a decision. Yeah, to us it's pretty clear who she emotionally decided on. But to her, it isn't, and she makes the choice that is best for her even if it's a bit unconventional. I'm pretty proud of the person she's become, this independent, carefree woman.
And Kim Shin. I don't know. Maybe it's because I've seen people like that in real life, but the jerk types rarely end up changing like that. Imo, the first impression he gave me was a real bad one and he was way to narrow-minded. Rules and ideals shouldn't matter as much as people do. And he tended to do what he wants even if it put everyone else in a bad spot. He's changing now though, but I think it's too late for me because I already fell in love with the Seo Joo and Mi Rae ship, even though I know they just wont end up together.
But anyway, it's not like we want him to get a girl who shows no interest him. It's just that in most dramas the female lead is very oblivious to love and I thought it will be the same here. I thought she will discover her feelings for him later on, in the meantime, we get these sweet moments where he looks at her like she's the most amazing woman he has ever seen. And we see her treating him, a chaebol, like he was a person worthy of befriending no matter his status, slowly coming to like him for him.
