Lee Seung-gi to be Na PD’s next luggage boy

Ermagerd. You guuuuuyssss, Na PD and Seung-gi, together again! WHO’S EXCITED? Lee Seung-gi has confirmed that he’ll be teaming up with PD Na Young-seok for the next season of tvN’s Grandpas Over Flowers, except this time, it’ll be with four actresses instead. It’s being called a Part 2 of his travel backpacking series, so we’ll have to wait and see if it gets called Grandmas Over Flowers or something else. Truthfully, you could tell me it was a special about watching paint dry, and I’d still tune in for this bromance.

The destination and main cast are still unconfirmed, but being courted are Yoon Yeo-jung (Aging Family, The King 2 Hearts) and Kim Hee-ae (A Wife’s Credentials, Midas). Kim Hee-ae’s too young for it to be a grandma special, so they might have to just call it an actress special if she joins. Yoon Yeo-jung would be fabulous, and has played Seung-gi’s onscreen mom, so that’s just going to be buckets of adorable. Can you just imagine all the mom-love that’s coming his way?

The plan is to have four actresses just like the halbae cast, with Seung-gi as the luggage boy a la Seo-jinnie. He was in fact recruited for the first season of Grandpas Over Flowers, but couldn’t manage it with his drama Gu Family Book; he’s since been meeting with Na PD to match their schedules for this next trip.

I hope there’s a chance for Seung-gi to go on a trip with the halbaes after this, because I think they’d be less doting and give him a harder time. I’m sure the actress special will be fun (and KBS’s copycat program has already premiered, which now I want to see just so I can compare), but I’m concerned they’ll all be too nice. Who’s going to be Il-sub halbae’s granny counterpart? Or will forcing veteran actresses to share a bathroom bring out the grumpypants in everyone anyway?

It’s already been two years since Seung-gi and Na PD parted ways with KBS’s first season of 1 Night 2 Days, where they had a five-year run and at times held 40% ratings. And if you couldn’t tell already, I’m over the moon about them working together again.

Season 2 of Halbae (the Taiwan trip) is airing now, and will take a fall/winter break while the Seung-gi/Actress season airs in November. But never fear, because the halbaes will return in January with their next trip, after they’ve had time to recharge.

Grandpas Over Flowers airs on Fridays on tvN.

I've missed seeing LSG in variety and I love his bromance with Na PD but I wonder if his obliging nature would work as well as LSJ's crochety honesty. I hope it's a halmoni series, just for the sake of uniformity...and I want them to give him a hard time, though I can't imagine what they could do that he couldn't take. He's young and would know how to wield his phone and scour the Internets...perhaps they should force him to navigate streets and the like without any electronic devices? ;)

I can't believe it's already been 2 years. I went through a depressive bout a few months back missing the old 1N2D!

yoon yeo-jung would be SO FABULOUS. oh my land, that lady is amazing; she has this dry, super sharp sarcastic wit that will send you into pieces. i loved her healing camp interview. she seems so frank and self assured and cool—absolutely my role model for what i want to be like when i reach her age.

i love grandpas over flowers, but i've a hunch this one has the potential to be more laugh-out-loud funny? with seung-gi and yoon yeo-jung, i think the one-liners are pretty much secured. would it be too much to hope for go hyun-jung and/or lee mi-sook? (i keep thinking of the movie "actresses," where i loved the chemistry of yoon, go, and lee). they're all sassy women. i don't know how well kim hee-ae would fit into that mix though—she's always struck me as the elegant, princessy type.

apparently seo jin mentioned seung gi in show that
Before he went to Taiwan (for Grandpa over flowers shooting) , Seung Gi gave some suggestions.

Seung Gi said if Seo Jin learns to cook some dishes, the grandpas will feel moved/touched.

But Lee Seo Jin said he will never learn because he usually don’t cook…

yaa seung giya i hope your cooking skills would have improve.

OMG! I predicted this!.... hahaha! As you all know Seung gi and Seo jin are besties so I was expecting that Seung gi will work with Na PD sooner or later. I enjoyed HOF so much that I can't wait for Seung gi turns. But even though I love Seung gi, he needs to spend time with the halbaes, so he will know "stress". :P

I literally squealed when I read the news. Grandpas over flowers has been fantastic with the halbaes and "art hyung", so it's good they're taking a break. Like many others, I'm SO excited for Lee Seung-gi to be paired up with the genius Na PD.

Oh my cats and dogs! Sooooooooo excited! Love the halbaes, but this will be even more fluffy for winter. Like Lemon meringue, right? If the halbaes are like strawberry-rhubarb? I'm glad they will be back in January too. Love GOF show so much, even if only from the recaps.

I have watched and re-watched my treasured 1N2D collection I don't know how many times...OMG Seung Gi in variety AGAIN!!! This is after the too brief appearance in Running Man! Honestly I have not checked out the grandpa series so really have no idea what to expect. I just know that Seung Gi will not disappoint me. And the bromance with Na PD is a given too. Hurrah! Hurrah!

I'm really, really, really happy to hear that Seunggi will be back in variety, AND with PD Na at the helm! Like all of you, I've missed him in variety.

HOWEVER, (I'm not being a wet blanket here, just expressing my concerns), sometimes when we expect too much, we end up being disappointed. I have several reasons for saying this:

1) This 'new' variety, will be the second part to GOF, which has become increasingly funnier and entertaining with each episode, so it has a hard act to follow.

2) The concept can't be too similiar, else people will start to compare. GOF, despite being a travel show, was refreshingly different as it cast Grandpas. People were curious to know how these halbaes would be in variety. Nowadays, variety shows are over saturated with young, pretty idols - both of the male and female variety, such that choosing halbaes piqued our curiousity and was a good change of variety diet.

There are also no games to add to the fun and tension, yet the show is entertaining. So PD Na will have bring something different in Part 2.

3) The chemistry between the halbaes is also another factor that this new show has to contend with. I'm not sure if PD Na had hired someone expert on human personality to match these halbaes together, or whether is was pure 'luck', but each of them are uniquely different, and yet are able to gel together and each give a different vibe to the show. Can PD Na do the same for 4 actressess?

4) The age factor is another consideration. The 4 halbaes have about 8 -9 yrs age difference. And though Il Seob maknae had to make coffee for the others and serve the others occasionally, he still has the 'authority' and freedom to express his displeasure, without coming across as rude and obnoxious. If the women were of a wider age gap, my fear would be that the maknae of the group would be totally tongue-tied. Remember the maknae actress in the the 1n2D actress special? (Sorry, I forgot her name). She barely spoke at all! Kim Sumi literally ruled the ladies! She claimed SG as hers and he was hands off to all the rest! Sigh! I was looking for some fights over him. Would Yoon Yeo Joon with her caustic wit do like wise?

5) Gramps, especially in Asian countries, tend to be more traditional, in that their wives do most of the work at home. Hence, in a travel show where they have to fend for themselves, they can be quite inept. This is the fun factor. The women however, are quite different. Moreover, they may end up spoiling SG, not that I'm complaining, but it maybe too easy for him.

6) Lee Seunggi is not Lee Seo Jin. Seunggi has always come across as an easy going and cheerful person. Even when he's not happy, he rarely shows it. Sometimes, I think he can't, or else the poor boy would get a lot of flak from the netizens, because of his image and age. LSJ, on the other hand, doesn't have 'the boy next door' image so he's free to show and speak his displeasure, (away from the halbaes). Furthermore, he's older than Seunggi. In fact, it is LSJ's displeasure that PD Na so evilly milks and taunts, and SJ's disregard for PD Na that makes GOF entertaining. SG is younger than PD Na and can't take the same liberty. So PD Na has to 'use' him differently.

These are just some of my concerns. However, PD Na is a great director and Seunggi is awesome in all that he does. I just hope that their combination would be able to pull off even better ratings and give us another memorable variety show and allay my concerns!

One big factor is Seung Gi himself. In the Best Friends episode of 1N2D, you can see LSG and LSJ in action side by side. In my view, there is no comparison. To paraphrase girlfriday, I would happily watch Seung Gi read a telephone book. Seriously.

I understand the concerns and agree with you. But for the concept part, if this is really intended as GoF spin-off like some articles said, then I think PD Na can't do something that will dissociate the new show from GoF completely, so the concept must be somewhat similar. Like you said, knowing PD Na and SeungGi, I'm sure they will try their best to put in new ideas and make things more entertaining and refreshing.

hmm i think you're overly concerned. while it's going to be a hard act to follow, i think it's going to have it's own cast chemistry and interesting personalities that can't be compared.

i think the charms of the grandmas will come through on their own terms. I expect the grandmas to be sharper and more demanding than the grandpas, actually, so that's going to be interesting to watch. of course, LSG is going to hilarious to watch, precisely bc he's almost the opposite of LSJ. He's not dependable, he's not intimidating, but he's extremely charismatic and likable. I can see the concern about him being a pushover, but I think he does have a limit and can push back. He's just made for variety, you can send him on a trip to the post office down the street and make an exciting episode out of it.

OMGGGG... I've been living under a rock for over a day. Or more like dealing with university but.... OMFG!!

Seung-gi back in variety? With Na PD? And actresses who would probably torture him by pulling his cheeks and treating him like a little kid? This is like - the best news since... I can't even remember.

He's like the umchinah of the nation. Imagine all the women trying to pair him up with their daughter or friend's daughter! GAH - that is soo exciting. I did a bit of Nate searching and found out they may be planning to get actresses of different age group. Like some older, middle aged and probably a 20-something. It would be amazing for us to have a fake love-line for SG too...

In anycase, like GF says, for this bromance - I'd watch them watch paint dry. In fact, I'd watch seung-gi meditate yoga for days and have a blast! :P
