Yoochun joins Kim Yoon-seok at sea
by girlfriday
It took a whole round of yes-no-maybe announcements, but confirmations are in that Yoochun (I Miss You, Rooftop Prince) will be joining producer Bong Joon-ho’s next film Sea Fog, and starring opposite Kim Yoon-seok (Thieves, Wandeuki). It’s the project that Song Joong-ki was being courted to join, but the army called first.
After four leading roles in dramas, this’ll be Yoochun’s big-screen debut, interestingly just on the heels of his I Miss You younger counterpart Yeo Jin-gu’s first movie, opposite the very same co-star. What can I say, Kim Yoon-seok gets around. It might have something to do with the fact that he’s amazing in everything.
The new project from blockbuster director Bong Joon-ho (Snowpiercer, The Host) will mark his debut as a producer, and will also be the directorial debut of Shim Sung-bo, screenwriter of his 2003 film Memories of Murder. The story is an adaptation of the 2007 stage play of the same name, and is based on true events.
Kim Yoon-seok plays the captain of a fishing vessel that’s fallen on hard times and turns to illegal smuggling of Joseon-jok (Koreans living in China) across the Yellow Sea. The journey is perilous, the maritime police is on their tail, and the stowaways face suffocation, all while the crew is falling apart at the seams. Yoochun plays a member of the crew who faces off with the captain.
Sea Fog starts shooting in October for a release next year.

From Song Joong Ki to Yoochun, they mean. Joong Ki is by all accounts an amazingly talented actor. Yoochun possesses certain charms and talents that can make him watchable and definitely make him likeable, but he is not an amazingly talented actor.

@JoAnne:
I have always been interested to check out SJK's filmography because it sounds like he's really good at his craft. I mean, I know he's really talented and one of his gen's better actors based on articles and feedback here/everywhere, but I've yet to really catch him in anything. Not sure where to start though (I caught parts of A Werewolf Boy but it's really not my cup of tea; FF a lot of the scenes).
Can someone kindly point me to two/three standout performances by him and if possible, why? Series or movies, no preference.
THANKS IN ADVANCE

His appearances as a young Lee Do in Deep Rooted Tree was nothing short of amazing. He was great in Nice guy, sungkyunkwan scandal and etc. I didn't think werewolf boy was that great but his performance as the feral werewolf was woah.

Sungkyunkwan scandal was his best performance in my opinion (so much charisma) better than nice guy and werewolf boy.

The thing with SJK is, the films/dramas he's in may not be all that, but he manages to make me care about his characters way more than I should.
One early scene-stealing performance was Sungkyunkwan Scandal, where he was the third lead, in a role that was basically a trope filler (school playboy) in the beginning, but managed to make way more out of that character than perhaps even the script intended at first.
He's made the transition to leading man only over the last year or so, but Werewolf Boy and Nice Guy both have standout performances by him - totally get if they are not your cup of tea though, the latter has serious writing issues towards the end and the former can be a bit of an acquired taste.

If you're just wanting to check out what he's capable of, then definitely watch the first couple of eps of Tree with Deep Roots. I didn't stick around past his beginning cameo - not a commentary on the drama, it's just not my thing - but he was outstanding. I resented having to glance down to read the subs whenever he was on screen.

I've watched him in SKKS, Tree With Deep Roots, Nice Guy, and have yet to watch werewolf boy although i plan to.
My opinion: his short episodes in Tree With Deep Roots playing the younger counterpart was by far his best performance.
I remember looking back on his filmography and noticing that he has yet to have many lead roles under his belt, but has managed to make such a big impression on people (huge popularity) that i found it almost puzzling. Because who gets as big as Song Joong Ki did before he even headlines his own lead role?
Comes to show that it's not the amount of screen time an actor has that makes him the best, but how much he accomplishes with the limited time he has (Kind of reminds me of taecyeon vs. kim jae wook in Who Are You right now)

Tree With Deep Roots. If you dont see him in anything else but these 4 episodes as king Sejong. My mind BLOWN by his peformance here!
Side Note: And when Han Suk-kyu took over as king Sejong! SIMPLY AMAZING!!! Best child to adult continutation performance ever!
For all those that finish this drama. You've missed out!

^^Very much agree with Tha. In TWDR, Han Suk Kyu (who played the adult King) did a fantastic job, but I will say without the absolutely stellar foundation SJK laid that character would not have been nearly as compelling. Those two together created on of the best drama characters I've seen in a long time.
It's the only thing I've seen SJK in, and yet it was enough to convince me that the hype around him is justified.

@JoAnne - this is quite apparent in Sungkyunkwan Scandal, I must say (re: SJK and Yoochun).
Yoochun improved quite a bit between the beginning and end of SKKS, and did great in I Miss You so I definitely feel like he doesn't lack an aptitude for acting, but I do think Song Joong-ki's brand of restrained intensity could have been genuinely great here.

I was going to be kind and say "A wee bit of a downgrade"....
That said, I kind of want to trust Bong Joon-ho, he doesn't strike me as a director that just randomly casts people (or idols). Let's hope he can get something out of Yoochun that we never dared to imagine....

I'd definitely give Yoochun credit for improving as he gains experience. I thought he was terribly wooden in SKKS - it worked with the character, but it didn't seem a deliberate choice so much as actor limitation - but he's come quite a way since then.

I agree with you on everything. Song Joong Ki is great, but everyone is making him out to be this supremely superb actor. I've liked Yoochun since SKKS, his understated performance actually was my second favorite after Song Joong Ki's in SKKS (yes, I said it). And I didn't know him as an idol before then. I'm just baffled by what seems to be such very harsh criticism of Yoochun like he's sooo bad at acting. I actually think he has talent for it. I remember so many people singing his praises during Rooftop Prince. He can do comedy and I think he off pulled drama well in Missing You. I mean, I get it that people don't think he's the best and all, but to think he's really bad? I'm really confused.

Oh, I hope no one misunderstands.
I loved Yoochun in I Miss You. I also thought like an earlier commenter said, that the wooden-ness in SKKS happened to work well for the character. I think he has ability and I like him and I'm not unhappy to see him get parts, at all.
I just...put it this way: When you think of those men on fire, burning with a passion to do their thing: for Joong Ki, it's acting. For Yoochun, it's singing. As it happens, Joong Ki is a passable singer. But if I have choices, I guess I want Joong Ki to act and Yoochun to sing, rather than the other way around, because I don't FEEL it the same with each of them.

August 20, 2013 at 7:29 PM
That's actually not a very fair assessment, i think.
A poor actor burning with passion is still a poor actor. Likewise a good one does not necessarily need to profess a fiery passion for his craft. For me I'm not sure why an idea of their level of passion would affect your opinion of an actor's choice, a director's casting...
Idols/singers must have it tough, having to remove their prior image (a factor in the audience's "feels" for their acting) on top of proving their abilities on any sort of objective scale.
ps. if it really matters, Yoochun professed a love/ambition for acting way way back when he was still a new face idol, so... i mean, people can have passions for more than one thing, no?
In any case I don't mean to sound like i'm ranting or attacking your opinion!

I am cool with this casting too. I saw Park Yoochun and Song Jong Ki for the first time in SKKS. I thought Yoochun was too stiff in the beginning, but SJK also overacted quite a bit. I prefer Yoochun's performance.
Unlike some drama production teams, the people in this project are highly respected; so they don't need to cast a popular idol to sell their film. It's been reported that he beat out around thirty actors to land this role.
I think those that automatically calling this casting a major downgrade is judging in haste. I think this will be a great opportunity for him.

I was just going to post a yet another "indeed, a downgrade" comment until I read yours. That totally makes sense. There must be something in Yoochun that made them hand him this character after considering Joong-ki, and no, I certainly don't think it's Yoochun's idol status. It IS a Bong Joon-ho film after all.
Yeah, so I guess I'm fine with him being casted on this, I can see Yoochun improving a lot from his SKKS days and hopefully this project would help him improve his craft.

I like them both. I do think Song Joong Ki is the more talented of the two, but yoochun is someone i consider to be on the the stronger acting end of the spectrum, amidst the many idols running amuck in k-dramaland. Any idol that proves his acting chops (when singing is obviously more his thing) gets alot of brownie points in my book. Yoochun has managed to exceed my expectations with every project so he's continually improving -- thus, his casting in this movie is totally fine with me.

I like SJK but putting aside my biased attitude towards him, I agree with JB, SJK seems to be overrated. Park Bo Young's performance was way more compelling than SJK in Werewolf Boy. On the overrated drama, The Innocent Man, even from the very start of the drama you can sense that he cannot matched MCW's acting. He doesn't have the same intensity and depth as what she has. I actually felt bad for MCW because SJK got most of the credit for the success of The Innocent Man.
Not a fan of Yoochun but you have to give him and the production team the benefit of a doubt. And to be fair though, he did improve alot in I Miss You. In the hands of a capable director your so called 'not so good' actor can become a brilliant actor.
May everyone be reminded that Song Joongki was not even a good actor when he first started.

@Jo - we don't know whom they did and didn't have in mind, and while I don't dismiss idols as actors until they're proven to suck, Taecyeon is basically my low, low bar for 'terrible actor' so it's really a hypothetical worst-case.
Personally, I find Yoochun's improvement between roles more heartening than his number of roles as lead, so even though I think SJK is a more talented actor, I don't think this film will be a complete lost cause with Yoochun opposite Kim Yoon-seok.

@JoAnne - nope! He's lucky that Who Are You doesn't require him to do more than what comes naturally to him - i.e. bad acting, but he doesn't deserve to be called even a mediocre actor.
Unless we re-establish the low bar for being a crap actor as 'incapable of facing the right way/saying the correct lines when the camera is pointed at you'. I suppose by that standard, Taec is not 'bad', but he'd be absolutely no loss to any acting project he dropped.

Maybe they need YC oversea's selling power (investing?), it seems he has the Japanese and Chinese market on his hands. After all with Kim Yoon Seok and Bong Joon Ho on board, they already have the critics, prestige and box office potential back home. I guess they're covering all the bases. ;)

his crying scene what got me most in the gut is the one he's crying in I miss u.
when soo yeon don't want to recognize him and he's trying to tell soyeon's mother that he'll try harder to find sooyeon in the investigation room.
damn, his crying when he's eating was sooooo heart wrenching i cry along with him.
if i could feel what the character's feeling, what they want to portray, then i would admit that they're good. and in i miss u, yoochun didn't look like a singer-turned-actor to me.
as a fan i oftenly feel ashamed if my bias took dramas (DB5K in my case), chun's drama that i enjoy and didn't feel embarrassed were SKKS & i miss u.

Although when I say uber awkward acting, I am not referring to the character. I don't recall exact moments or scenes but I remember it was pretty uneven and not exactly convincing. Then again, I only saw him in one series and didn't complete it at all so I would definitely give this movie a shot. Him being an idol doesn't bother me at all or affect my judgement of him as an actor. While it's unfair that others who are better actors didn't get the role, I can certainly see the merit of casting him in it.

For the record, I do not give anyone - idol or actor - the stankeye, until I've actually watched them suck across multiple roles. I believe in giving people a chance, just not endless chances like some idol fangirls demand.
And like Annie says, your naivete is showing if you think producers and directors choose their casting based on talent alone.
A major Hollywood producer wrote a piece for New York magazine earlier this year about having to turn down Jennifer Lawrence - the most recent winner of the Best Actress Oscar - for a role despite the fact that she was the best of the actors who auditioned, because she was an unknown at the time and his backers wanted a more recognisable 'name' in the film so they could sell it. What makes you think SK is any different?

A really surprising choice, but I ... like it.
Yoochun is still very rough around the edges and after all those TV dramas he needed a meaty part to prove himself. Seems, like he got it now. He's not the only one with a large fan following in China or Japan for sure, so this can't be the only reason to cast him. (I'm thinking Jung Il Woo or Lee Min Ho right now, please, correct me, if I'm wrong). Also, I can't really believe, that such a renowned director risks his reputation casting an 'idol'.
Yoochun exucedes a certain maturity, that I really like. I only know him as an actor (although even I know now who JYJ is), but in all the dramas I saw with him (Rooftop Prince, SKKS, and I Miss You) he always caught my eye as someone special (even next to Song Joong Ki. I'm a liiiiittle too old, to hype over SJK's part in SKKS, I fear. Even in RL I tend to look at the earnest guys.)
Song Joong Ki has his army duties, Yoochun is now what we get. I'll check this movie out for sure and wish him all the best.

Hmm I'm cautiously hopeful for this. I mean SJK is obviously a better actor but I think Yoochun has potential and this project sounds like a good exercise to push him even further. I'm usually a skeptic when it comes to idol-casting but he's one of the few that I think could shed the idol-actor stain given time and more projects.

Congrats to Yoochun for being cast in this.
My attitude about this is, even if SJK wasn't going to serve his military time, from the description of this movie Yoochun is still the better choice. As much as I have enjoyed SJK in all of his various roles, one thing he doesn't have is an overabundance of testosterone.
A film that involves an embattled crew fighting against a Captain Bligh calls for 'manly' actors, not actors with a delicate/pretty appearance.
These two guys are talented actors, each with their own strengths. Stand them side-by-side for casting in a role that calls for being a confrontational, tough SOB and Yoochun wins, hands down.
And to belittle Yoochun's filmography by slamming the idol aspect of his career is just petty. I think we'd all be rather hard-pressed to find a 50+ y.o. actor who didn't have their career origins tangled up in some kind of idol management training - singing, modeling, dancing or what have you. They all had to start somewhere.

My thoughts exactly.
I do think that SJK is the better actor but Yoochun is the better choice here.
I think YC needs a good script and director to fulfill his potential. I personally thought that all his dramas after SKKS were absolutely awful writing-wise. Really looking forward to this.

"overabundance of testosterone"?
If you were familiar with the play, and the original actor in the production, you'd know that "overabundance of testosterone" wasn't how one would describe Dong-Shik, the youngest member of the crew, nor a "confrontational, tough SOB". Sea Fog is not Mutiny on the Bounty.
And there's nothing effete about SJK's performances nor characters, so no, "overabundance of testosterone" is not a requisite to portray intensity nor credibility in confrontational scenes.
Also, you would be hard-pressed to find a 50+yo actor "with their career origins tangled up in some kind of idol management training". Idol management is a completely alien concept for that generation of actors.

August 20, 2013 at 5:06 PM
Still, w that said, it doesn't mean Dongshik should look not manly n tough. To b able to look believable as a ship crew, still, you should look like you have the ability to handle tough task on board. Dongshik is pure and naive mostly because he is the youngest, compared to other members, not necessary pure n naive in the modern common world. In the play, the actor who acted as Dongshik looks manly and tough also. Yoochun is building up his body for the role, so I certainly don't think pure and naive in the description r about the physical appearance.

Who said anything about "pure and naive" re: the character's physical appearance? All I'm saying, you don't have to be hulk-ish in appearance, exuding an "overabundance of testosterone" in all your muscles, to be believable as an impoverished fisherman in desperate circumstances, which is what the role calls for. Look at the original cast in the stage production. Heck, just pick any remote coastal villages on the peninsula and look at the fishermen there. You don't want to look too well-fed, if you want to be mistaken for a local.

@Kristi
Ordinarily I don't come back in to re-comment on my original post, but feel the need to after reading your reaction.
I am not familiar with the play and my comment was based on JB's general description of the plot and character(s) involved. If she had described the role as a gay cabin boy then my comment would have been different. SJK would have then been the obvious choice over Yoochun. When I stated that SJK doesn't show an overabundance of testosterone in his acting, I meant it. Some actors do, some don't. SKKS was a good example - viewers were still arguing over SJK's portrayal in SKKS till the end and beyond. That's how good he is with this type of role. Who knows? Maybe his 2 years in the Army will bring out all the testosterone we can handle.
As for my 50+ actor comment, I used that age specifically. Actors 50+and under certainly are aware of idol manufacturing - the descriptor terms might have been different, but not the intent of management to control and polish their 'products', actors or not.

"gay cabin boy"? Given that some of the gay people I know are also some of the most muscular men I know, I can't help but think you have a very fixed idea of what constitutes manliness, toughness, or any of the attributes you think are essential for the role--in SJK's case, based on your preconceptions of his work in SKKS. You seemed critical of the preconceptions about YC, but I think you're making the same mistake with SJK. And unlike you, I don't want SJK to come out of his military service with an "overabundance of testosterone" in his acting, but something tells me his acting philosophy is far too sound to fall into that pitfall.

You argued YC would be the better choice as a "confrontational, tough SOB" with an "overabundance of testosterone" while SJK works better as a "gay cabin boy," not knowing none of your descriptions fit the character of Dong-Shik.
I heard you loud and clear.

@Cynthia
While looks admittedly have a big part to play in casting (it will be a tad harder to buy Kim Woobin as Sooha for instance but NOT impossible), it is on the actors' onuses to transcend their image/looks to convincingly play a role. Some flowerboys have done it rather successfully - IMO, YSY in Me Too, Flower; LJS in that table tennis movie (I saw a short clip of him threatening a character, didn't watch the movie); conversely, some macho dudes have played roles that are so far from their cool outwardly appearances (e.g., CSW in Best Love, JWS in Padam x2).
So I don't think it's really fair to say that well-qualified actors who look like "gay cabin boys"/"confrontational tough SOBs" can only play "gay cabin boys"/"confrontational tough SOBs". It's really up to the actors to convince us via their acting. Unless they wanna be typecasted for the length of their entire career of course.

What I meant to say is, for that argument, acting chops >>> type of look/image.
Of course, in the grand scheme of things, there are also other factors to consider when you are casting a particular person.

Yoochunnnn!!! I miss you brat!
choosing a sageuk drama for his debut and this one for his movie debut, wow, another brilliant choices indeed!
Congrats and all the best to Yoochun..This is very very very good opportunity to work with Director BJH..TBH, I always looked him as an actor not an idol-actor instead since I know him because of SKKS even tho now I'm officially a JYJ fan^^ For me he did so well, never disappoints me and I love the way he challenged himself..It was revealed that approximately 30 actors showed interest in this role, and Yoochun beat out all them to claim the role..and the fact he is the 2nd male lead and will work with Kim Yoon Seok, there's nothing for me to complain or making fuss..I'm in!
damn, he makes me imagining his role will be like his Black' Smith's ad..greasy, dirty, wearing pagoda..gwahh! jaw dropped!

LOL :) same here...
In my opinion all the SJK vs. (+) Yuchun = Yoo Ah In.
I personally like all 3 guys since SKKS but I think if you throw in Yoo in the mix, he takes the cake + icing. He covers the "Overabundance of testosterone" requirement I read on some post in acting caliber as compared to the 2. I also agree with some here that SJK is a good actor but he's not there yet to consider Yuchun as a huge downgrade. I'm actually looking forward to this movie with Yuchun in it. Since his SKKS days, I can see in him a talent waiting to breakthrough all he needs is an excellent vehicle of a film/drama that is well directed and well written to bring it out and this film might be it. With all the SK idol saturating the kdrama and some kfilms, Yuchun sits on top of the crop. I had known him as an actor first before knowing of his idol background. I see him way suited in the acting world. No offense on his fans on the idol side but putting him side by side with his JYJ members, he gets overshadowed with the talent of the other 2 with singing so I actually love tha fact that he shine in the acting department.

Well everyone has to start somewhere. Just because he is an idol doesn't mean he has to focus on singing for the rest of his life. From his earlier projects, he seems to take his roles seriously and try to improve. SJK for sure is overrated in term of his acting. I find SJK more good looking, pretty but even in Nice Guy I was imagining Go Soo or SJS in that kind of role because he didn't pull it off enough in my opinion. I would reserve my judgement until the movie release and won't say this is a downgrade because it's just rude to Yoochun who auditioned like everyone else for this role.

I have to be honest, I never thought an idol actor (no matter how good some are, they are not seasoned actors) would star in a Bong Joon Ho film.
That said, I trust and think they know what they're doing. For all we know, the role is not as demanding. Plus, while movie deals to happen for reasons other than talent, I think these makers would at least audition people before hiring. Especially the ones with the idol brand.
So not my first choice, or my choice in general, but I'm willing to trust them and him for this.

This. It's really not about Yoochun vs SJK. I would have expected a more seasoned actor to be casted for a BJH vehicle. I mean, just look at his track record - actors in his films are all pretty up there/top notch. Idol or not, YC isn't in the same calibre.
However, also because of the director's track record, I trust in his exceptional foresight, having made the decision that he had.

I really have no idea how this turned into a Yoochun/Joong Ki fight. So just because all of these guys were in the same popular series, they have to be compared to each other from now on? That is unfair and insulting to both of these actors, frankly. To make the most important thing about them the fact they were in a drama together.
Both have done their works, both have their careers, both have a different style of acting, different looks, different type of attractiveness. Yes, Song is more experienced and has developed his skills more than Yoochun, but that does not mean he is better for any and every role.
And yes, looks do matter too, to address another issue raised here. If the character is supposed to be a warrior, you cast Oh Ji Ho, not a pretty boy. And no, feminine does not equal gay. There is nothing wrong with being effeminate, androgynous or having soft features (all different things, by the way). Neither with being more conventionally masculine. But they do matter in roles. Acting comes first, but the person's face and body need to be believable for the character. This has nothing to do with this movie or these guys, I'm speaking in general.
So frankly, I'd have chosen neither. I'd have gone for someone of that age, if it was necessary, but as nice as both of them are, there are more talented actors. But since they did, let's trust them. Let the guy show us what he can do and if you're going to compare, compare him with the best options and state your worries. Don't turn this into a fight between which of the two SKKS guys is hotter/better to be in a work. The guys are clearly not fighting each other over it, so why are you?
Fan arguments of the "My Guy is better than Your Guy" variety are not good for anyone involved. They're the equivalent of a playground fight between kids using their action figures to fight over who's cooler. And I think most of us are older than that by now.

I don't really like Park Yoo Chun (didn't like him in any of his projects after SKKS), but I'm sure whoever was involved in casting decided he would be a good fit for this role.
I'm a Kim Yoon Seok fan, so I've been following the news to see who's going to become the other leading actor in this movie. PYC being cast was a little unexpected, but I'm really curious to see how PYC will do opposite Kim Yoon Seok who's no joke when it comes to movie making. Also this movie gives me the movie Yellow Sea kind of vibe, which makes it even more interesting to see how PYC would fit in the movie. I can't wait until next year.

I trust Bong Joon-ho and his team. They won't randomly pick someone to act in his movie. Especially an idol star. There's never cross in my mind that Bong Joon-ho actually chose an idol to act in his movie. There must be a reason why they chose him.
I won't say anything about Yoochun's acting until the movie is out because it is unfair to judge him this early. This is a golden opportunity for him. I wish all the best for this young actor, good luck Yoochun.

I'm more of a Joong-ki fangirl than Yoo-chun's but I think Yoo-chun has much improved since his first drama outing. People tend to forget that SKKS was Yoo-chun's first drama and you've got to at least expect the worst from an idol turned actor. But in all fairness, Yoo-chun was able to deliver a decent performance much better than the heroine (IMO). You just can't compare his performance with Joong-ki since Joong-ki has more experience during than time.
I've followed Yoo-chun's dramas after SKKS as well as Joong-ki's and both have been growing and developing their acting. Yoo-chun has come along way from being an idol turned actor. He's more of an actor now in my eyes than a DBSK member and he's one of the better ones in that category. With that said, I'm one hundred percent supporting his first outing in the big screen. Fighting Yoo-chun!

I think it is a casting improvement.
Seamen are thugs. Yoochun can do gangsta thug better.
If it is really good and seen by a foreign audience at a festival, they will be looking for that style and not an intense flower boy.
Not so much who is a better actor as who is better for that type of part, and I think it is Yoochun.
