Park Hae-il and Shin Mina reunite for big screen romance
by girlfriday
This is a romantic pairing that floats my boat. Shin Mina (Arang and the Magistrate) is headed back to the big screen for her next project, opposite the fabulous Park Hae-il (Aging Family). Love them separately, love them together. They’ll be reuniting after starring together in 2009’s island survival game show thriller A Million, this time for a much quieter road movie and love story.
The new film from director Jang Ryul (he wrote Jury and wrote and directed Dooman River) is called Gyeongju, named for the Gyeongsangdo city. Park Hae-il stars as the main character whose old memories lead him back to Gyeongju. As he travels there he meets Shin Mina, a local shopkeeper who runs a teahouse, and they’ll share a love story during his journey.
It sounds like a contemplative road movie, and I’ll tell you right now — I’d watch Park Hae-il drive around in his car for two hours. He’d act the hell out of that car ride. Hopefully we’ll get a nice dose of romance too, and with these two, the quirkier the better. It’s nice to have some movies to look forward to in the coming year, even if that still seems like forever away.
Gyeongju starts shooting next week for a release this winter.

I'm all for a potentially quirky rom-com! I will always have a soft spot for Shin Mina even if I never managed to finish Arang. I haven't seen anything with Park Hae Il but hopefully I'll catch him in Memories of Murder, The Host and/or War of Arrows from that long to-watch list of mine before this movie comes out.

*minus the "-com" since I'm not sure this will be intentionally funny (or the campy variety). Sounds more low-key and mellow from the premise.

Love this guy.
The Host, Memories of Murder, War of Arrows, Moss, and Paradise Murdered were all good and intense. He does intense and charming well....
Thanks for the article.

He looked so different in MoM - I literally had to look twice to check whether he was the same guy when I was checking out his wiki page.
He's also in Ageing Family right? He's a chameleon, I swear. He looks vastly different in almost every film.

I hope it's not a melodrama. I'm good with a human, warm drama, just not a melodrama. But it would be a waste to make this too fluffy with this cast too.
I'm all for this. Love them both. I really don't need much other than these two on screen. As GF said, they can sit together watching paint dry and I'd still spend a fun 2 hours. Actually, I'd enjoy that more than 'A Million'. It was a really bad movie, so I'm glad I get to see them again in something (hopefully) better.

I admire a lot of talented actors in Korea but I love love love Park Hae-il the most. He is just so darn amazing and I'm amazed at how amazing this amazing guy can be lol. He is so worth the fan-girling.

I'd watch War of the Arrow over and over and never get tired of it. Ryoo Seung-Ryong was such a worthy villain and that made this movie even better.

Totally forgot that I had seen him previously in "Memories of Murder" (where he was very good), but loved him in "War of Arrow" (where he looked so different).
PHI and SMA - what a casting coup!

I would not mind if the car was caught in traffic and his radio only played one station and it was snowing so we could not see any scenery around him and he was driving some old nondescript car so there was not anything in side to look at either. He could be in traffic so long that he could start reading the car manual from boredom and I would sit pleasantly smiling watching for two hours.
HE. IS. THAT. GOOD.

PARK HAE IL!!!!!!!!!!! I love this man. He had me at Scent of Love. I cannot even watch the video for the love theme (sung by Sung Si Kyung!) without breaking down and crying. He is THAT GOOD.

Awe, she said he was her ideal type in Strong Heart. Glad they're getting to work together again and I've missed her so much! I love Shin Min Ah - She's gorgeous and can play different characters very well. She'll be lovely as a tea shop keeper.

I never watched this man in anything (granted i'm more into k-drama than k-movie because it was so hard to find sub for k-movie) but i remember hearing JB and GF gush about this man in their podcast. So i'm curious about how good he actually is. And now he's acting against shin min ah (whom i hv serious girl crush) i'll definitely dig around for this movie and its subtitle when this movie comes out.

He was a no-good, cheating, manipulative scamp in Rules of Dating, and I still liked him!
