With college starting in less than a week from now (can't believe I'll be a *real* college student by the next OT!) I can't help but feel nostalgic, especially when listening to certain songs. Also, in light of recent announcements/events (KCON, DB ebook, US kpop concerts), I was wondering how I/we/international k-fans got to this point. I think it's pretty cool that the international community has built such a presence for itself that kdrama directors are flying out to speak at festivals and fangirls (GF and JB) like ourselves have the confidence in the audience and relevance to publish something on such a topic. So I wanted to ask 2 questions:
1. How long did it take for you to find Dramabeans from the time you began watching kdramas?
2. Is there an OST album/song or cover featured in a drama that you have consistently replayed long after the drama or episode has aired? Or as a result of watching a drama you found out about a certain artist that you came to love?
Hello again!
I am at work, so I post in secret again. Another one of those 15-hour days
To continue with the last times´ subject of being called auntie, they still do that.
I guess it can´t be helped. Some americans and brits call me Miss.
Although it means „What?” in my language.... almost. Good that they don´t call me It.
Or „That android robot without feelings.”
But I was "considering" looking at the „auntie”-matter "favorably", as they say, I seriously was.
Because the last drama I watched was The Last Scandal of My Life.
So...how does „Ahjumoni” differ from „Ahjumma”? Is it more formal?
Or does it just mean an even older auntie....?
Another thing with The Last Scandal was.... THAT guy was in it. YOU KNOW.
Holy shit it was so wierd at the beginning. I was just going. Nooooo? No? No-no. No-no-no-no-no.
But then he sort of grew on me.
SERIOUSLY he played such a nice character before and then went on to be a rampaging killer.
Kind of turned me from one sort of shivers to „Oh, this is a damn good actor, playing such different emotions.
” Don´t hate me, but I like „Min Joon Gook” now.
I recommend this series to everyone who hasn´t seen it yet and want to get over the I Hear Your Voice
„Oh He Makes Me Vomit Just Go Die Never Seen A More Despicable Character Wish He Would Stab Himself” – emotion.
Even though it is an earlier drama. He is just a SWEETIE there.
I like Jung joon Ho even better though, he is not going overboard with emotions a la Dokko Jin,
but it suits the „still feel like 19 pretending to be 32 actually 39 but still a kid!” mentality.
And actually, so many men are like that! They still haven´t grown up.
In general, I am really liking the series for now, even thouhg the husband matter drags wayyyyy too long
and Sun Hee cries wayyyyyy too many times over it.
But what I like is when the OTP really acts like schoolkids instead of 39-year-olds, hiding and whispering
and teasing and playing games and the like. It is like they continued where they left off.
But is there reallly a „certain way a 39-year-old should act”? Or people of any age?
Although maturing and taking responsibility was the only option for Dong Chul in this case.
Even more fun and games after it!
I don´t watch any other shows, I am too busy.
I read recaps, but the only one that interests me of the current bunch is Who Are You?
Even that has become a bit predictable.
Anyway....a question too.
Which of the drama actors /actresses do you share the same birthday with
and do you think you have anything in common with these people?
Little help from this page, perhaps: http://birthdaypersonality.tumblr.com/
I was born on Janyary 25, so...I found Hwang Jung Eum was also born January 25.
From other famous people, Virginia Woolf, William Colgate (toothpaste)
and Steve Prefontaine (long distance runner) were born January 25.
Well, I really like running. And I write.
And, man, do I like curly hair, but....not the kind Hwang Jung Eum sported in Full House 2.
I must love KDrama to the point of pain because, after SqueeCapping WAML with JoAnne and kakashi, and HC with kakashi and JoAnne, I'm now working on Who Are You with fellow Squeer bcook! We managed 5 SqueeCaps in 7 days. Well, 5 1/2, as episode 7 is partly done. Still, that's a lot of Taec, and not enough KJW! I'm still feeling more..well..feelings between Hyun-joo and Shi-on than I do with our energetic puppy Gun-woo and the quiet Team Leader. In the contest of Ears versus Eyes, KJW is winning with all the subtle nuances of his facial expressions.
A shameless plug for my fellow Squeer, kakashi. I highly recco her KimJicaps of GofM to anyone with eyes and a love of that man.
I’m also watching Master’s Sun, which surprisingly, doesn’t make me think of BL as much as people say. Joong-won isn’t a man-child thinking that the whole world loves him (like Dokko Jin), but self-centered and driven thanks to his childhood trauma. I will admit the hair is similar. Also Gong-shil, despite her life, is very much an idealistic faerie. Even as role reversal, the characters don’t fit in the BL character molds. But the interactions between the two are so hilarious! This kind of tongue-in-cheek writing is really what the Hong Sisters are best at, and does shine here like BL. On a side note, I hope as a ghost, I don’t bother people for coffee, but when I think about an eternity without a Chai Tea Frappachino [shudder].
On the “completed” drama front, watched “Fabulous Boys” with Jiro Wang, “Love Around” with George Hu and Annie Chen, and “Sawan Saang” with Cee Siwat.
On the “I’m working on it” drama front, is half of Scandal (8 episodes so far), a smidgen of Two Weeks, and current on Starman.
There is a belief in Korea that if you grow up with someone that your body wll look like theirs too... for example, hands...
if yours are long and tapered and the people you grow up with are long and tapered, that proves it. (I forgot the name, I'd have to ask the person who gave me the link to the paper after I discovered the principle.)
I think this is a nice take on nature v. nurture. Neither "wins" and kinda disporves LSS's theory at its heart.
Dramas
No major upsets.
LSS I mainly dislike for the WTH in the characterizations and the nonsensical plot. I definitely don't mind the pacing since Master's Sun is *slower* in a lot of respects than LSS.
I'm watching Just You in the TW department for the cute, but fluffy and predictable. I have a range in my tastes.
[For KJW fans]
Police: "On the night of July 22, 2007, what happened there?"
Julia scratches her head. "Good heavens, no idea. Probably sitting at home watching Netflix."
Police: "OK, I'll ask you again, where were you?"
Julia: "I said I don't know"
Police, holding up a photo: "You know this man, right?"
Julia: "Looks like Lee Jae Wook"
Policemen exchange a look. Why does the suspect suddenly look flush?
Julia closes her eyes and smiles remembering LJW. Mmmm. Ruler of Your Own World, my cutie pie bass guitarist. Coffee Prince, Antique Bakery, Bad Guy, Dalja's Spring, and best of all Marry Me, Mary.
Police: "What is your relationship to this man?"
Julia blushes. Does lusting after qualify as a relationship? And how could she admit to being a noonaphile? It's embarassing. She glances down guiltily.
Police: "We found pictures of him on your computer. Some in his bathrobe, others shirtless. Are you still going to deny knowing him?"
Julia thinks to herself, am I going to jail for illegal downloading? Really, it was just for personal use that I had KJW as my wallpaper.
Police: "Unless you can account for your whereabouts, we'll have to arrest you on suspicion." The cuffs feel cold on her wrists, and she wonders who can she call to bail her out? Will she be left to hope Lost and Found Detective Shi-On from Who Are You can save her? Uh-Oh.
Oh hello everyone. I never get to be on OT because it's so late but it's out early, really early today.
Just wanted to say if any of you are going to the KCON interview with JB and GF- have a great time. Their guests looks interesting- the PD for Monstar.
In the meantime, am going back to TW land- am so in love with Just You and Love around and am rewatching the episodes more than the K drama ones.
Things are chugging along here, home- and drama-wise. Child is doing well 8 months on, across the continent from her mama, and the job is presenting interesting challenges, and friends/family appear to be in a stable and healthy patch. So life is good!
Dramas are ok these days, nothing as spectacularly wonderful to me as Cruel City…but I’m giggling at Master’s Sun dialogue, I’m swooning at Kim Jae Wook’s sad but sexy ghost, and I’m alternately grabbing my heart – no, I’m grabbing my heart all the time, I guess – for the chase scenes and the Dad/Daughter scenes in Two Weeks. And Song Jae Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiim! I haven’t watched this week’s Doctor and I don’t know if I will. Probably will. We’ll see. I DID watch the incredibly wonderful 4-episode special called Adolescent Medley last weekend. That was a treat from beginning to end. Don’t miss it. Shooting has begun on Heirs. I received a message on that from Lee Min Ho yesterday, yes. Prepare yourself for the SqueeCaps, friends, because I am BESIDE MYSELF with joy at the potential opportunities in this one. I cannot wait! Uri Minho doesn’t know that it’s not because of him, of course. We’ll just keep that to ourselves, k? But in the meantime, Shuk has been squeezing over Who Are You, and Kakashi has the KimJiCaps, and they’re both a lot of fun to read. I made an appearance on Ep 15’s KimJiCap, that was fun.
–"With Love" (1998), with Takenouchi. Okay, have some issue with the message it sends.
–"Oh, My Dad" (new J dorama). Okay.
–"Good Doctor" – ep. 5 was okay, ep. 6 was poorly written and a disappointment. Still love Shi-on, but not really enjoying anything else.
–"Two Weeks" – Need to catch up on the last two episodes.
–"Lee Soon Shin" – Only ep. 47. Who knows what this weekend will bring. I fear not what I want.
Nothing else I think?
Well, a few films. Including "Wings of the Desire" (1988). The rest was previewing for a festival, so I can't yet share (but some good stuff).
Message for Saya:
I've looked at the KCL schedule, the Wed 7:30 p.m. class is the one that works for me – can't do the 6 p.m. one. Maybe leave me a message on my blog, so that I have your email and we can communicate in the real world?
Lots of cycle commuting this week, some 145 km (90 mi). Which is good, since I can't remember the last time I went running!
Going to Greece on Wednesday, for a wedding. Shall stuff myself with Greek olives and lug home as much olive oil and Greek coffee as possible. :-D Will take lots of pictures, I decided to go for broke and bought a really, really, really nice one.
Caught about 20 minutes of episodes 5 & 6 of Empire of Gold. It's actually kind of interesting, from what I can gather. I'll have to watch the full episodes later on, one day, when time permits.
I liked Love Around - the characters are nicely consistent, right down to the annoying relatives. Honestly, if my g-ma had put that much pressure and pouting into our relationship, I would have disowned her. At least, until she made me her signature lasagna.
I didn't find the love story of his sister and the delivery boy all that believable, but I couldn't actually tell you why. The performances were good, it was just missing some spark.
Just You is on my To Watch List, along with that short drama series with Peter Ho.
YTBLSS: I am so glad that this is going to be over this weekend because... well... I just hope we get a lot of cute because otherwise I'll be pissed as hell
Good Doctor: I am still not totally on board... I don't know a lot about autism but to me it seems there is a lot going wrong with the portrayal...
Regarding the romance I just hope that we get Yoon Seo + Do Han because it seems the most realistic (and I just don't like Chae Kyung :P). Yoon Seo would be a great noona to Shi On (which she already showed a bit) and I think that's what he needs most.
The Highlights:
Who are you? - I can't help it I love it :D I'm really curious to find out what really happened on D-Day and who the big baddie is (there have bin hints though I don't trust them since I have been deceived by dramaland a little too often^^).
As for the dead boyfriend... I couldn't help but think: Dude you're dead. Get over her! ... Am I too heartless here?!?^^
Masters Sun: Oh I love it! The chemistry between the leads is amazing. Gong Hyo Jin is amazing. And I also start to feel the first symptoms of second lead syndrome, which ... damn -.- I so didn't want it to happen but that candy sharing scene... Why so cute Kang Woo?
As for two weeks: Haven't seen the episodes yet but I'm gonna marathon them tonight.
I also managed to watch "Miracle in Cel No. 7" and.... What a movie T.T I cried like a baby most of the second half... But I LOVED it! Ryoo Seung-Ryong's performance was unbelievably good and the little girl, Kal So Won... AMAZING!
Variety shows I've watched:
We got married: Lol at Taemin and his try to surprise Na Eun...
Jonwoon and Junhee are still my favourite pairing and the horse riding session was cute
Running Man: a lot of guests but MONDAY COUPLE FTW!!!
ONVS: I so have to find someone to play badminton with me :D I was never really good but this show...I swear I am gonna end up trying all those sports they do :P (although I am also a terrible ping pong player^^)
BFF: Seriously FOOD? The next episodes are all going to be about home cooked foof? WHY? Mental not for self: Eat before watching BFF or you end up hungry while watching :P
I also started to watch variety shows with Infinite and the boys just crack me up :D
Oh and for the Good Doctor fans: Check out the latest Happy Together episode with Joo Won, Joo Sang Wook, Kim Young Kwang and Jeong Man Sik > it's hilarious :D
I've not been on OT for a while because I've not had much energy to spare: I've been fighting two viruses, parvo and coxsackie, and, now, apparently (can't get a straight answer out of the doctor), strep A. However, things are getting better, and I'm now on penicillin too, so hopefully, it'll all be okay soon.
I do want to ask: is there anywhere I can see Aging Family subbed in English?
Hello everybody!! This is the first time I have ever commented on the open thread just because my time zone is kind of at odds with its posting time. But I thought I would drop a line today to say hello to everyone and that I really enjoy reading your comments each week even if I can't always contribute.
At the moment I am watching Who Are You which I am absolutely adoring, and Master's Sun which I am likeing mainly for its cute OTP.
I am saving Two Weeks for later when I can watch it all in a row in a huge marathon because Lee Jun Ki is too fantastic to be watching in small doses!!
I hope everyone has a lovely day wherever you all are based!! :-)
Great drama week although I did get the giggles a lot.
Blade and Petal/Sword and Flower: That 15th episode had me staring --mouth agape-- one minute or rolling in giggles the next. I really do love this show but the overplotting secrets/double secrets/double-crosses/conspiracy-doubleconspiracy/tripleconspiracy thing was so weirdly desperate at times that I could only think the writers had lost the true plot somewhere and were just desperately spinning wheels. I have now become a fan of No Min Woo. I'm actually fast-forwarding through episodes just to see him.
Master's Sun: ooh, am liking this and it gave me the sweetest most lovingly spiritual cheesy moment I have seen in a while. Loved when the universe had the music in the Military police car be "Nobody but you." Felt like God reassuring military deserter that all would be all right.
Major giggles at the ending of the 6th episode of Two Weeks. Just joyful giggles, i guess, that the writers had me so firmly in their grip. Scary for Soo Jin but wow, it feels good to be taken on such a manipulative ride. Am seeing the story as a wonderful parable/allegory of life, fatherhood, pro-life issues, family. So the coincidences work in this drama because they are all symbolic or meaningful for the hero's journey and return to life.
Who are you? Ah me. I am still liking this show and expecting it to do good things. Forlorn ghosts and their amnesiac true loves will get me everytime.
Not much else. I think I saw a few movies. Oh yeah, the best of them were Tokyo Girl. and Fog Night was pretty sweet as well.
I've got to find an anime to get into. Ah, animecrazy, i miss you.
1) I discovered Dramabeans after watching my first ever kdrama , Dream High, after googling everything ever related to the show once it finished and I felt like I might die without it. I came across dramabeans and realised that there were many more dramas out there to feed my obsession!
And I have been reading Dramabeans and feeding my obsession ever since (approx 2 and a 1/2 years later).
2) the only OST song I have repeatedly replayed is Black Moon sung by Shin Mina for the Arang and the Magistrate OST. It is such a beautiful song and she sings it so well!! :-)
Hiii everyone!! :)
Only three dramas are in my roster at present. Lately I'm going through a drama drought. I haven't started any of the new ones. Although Good Doctor is the next one on the list.
PUBERTY MEDLEY: I wasn't in the mood for a weekly drama so I started this shortie after reading about it here in OT. I loveeeeed it. :D Cute, funny and gorgeous to look at. The rural background was very captivating. This made my week :)
ISYG: 10 episodes to go. But I'm still liking it. But it feels as though the drama is ending what with everyone seemingly tuning good. Well except the evil MIL ofcourse...
*** SPOILER I didn't expect a timejump in this drama :O
WHO ARE YOU : I'm getting tired of Shi On's face. Esp the "scream face" at the end of each episode. But the plot is still interesting though. And liking Taec. His acting still not that good though. But he has improved a lot and seems to be trying a lot as well.
Hope all of you guys visiting KCON tommorrow will have a great day!! I would've gone today just so I would know GF and JB's identities. Sad that am at the other side of the globe :( Have fun you guys.. :D
Just finished watching Cruel/Heartless City about a week ago. I'd have to admit the middle part of it got a bit draggy. Perhaps the first half of the show raised my expectations too much, with all its exciting twists and turns and what not. In the interests of not spoiling anything for anyone (like some of the OTs have for me in past weeks), I will not mention more.
Also have a newfound love for Jung Kyung Ho. I remember what a sweet guy he was in Smile, You. But in CC/HC he is positively smouldering.
I remember scanning through some comments saying CC/HC failed to live up to its potential. Would love to hear from you where you feel the drama fell short.
Meanwhile, I've just started on Jeon Woo Chi, at episode 7 now. At this point, I'm just waiting for UEE to be more involved in the plot.
I had to watch Soulmate again after reading the post of Shin Dong Wook. It's still as amazing as the first time I watched it, warts and all. The music has always stood out but this time I really noticed how it was used so effectively throughout. I wonder what other shows this music director has done?
I'll be moving to Japan for a year on Tuesday. I'm super nervous and excited.
Good Doctor, I enjoy it but I'm having issues with the whole cure to autism. What I know of there is no cure.
And of course that he has to be a genius, but then this wouldn't be a kdrama if he wouldn't be. There's a friend of the family who has a form of autism. It just takes time and patience to get to know her.
Masters sun, I'm still hooked. I even bawled reading the latest eps recap. The scary doll part though (WHY)! Dolls are super creepy.
Also I need to finish itakiss, I've gotten really fond of Kin-chan.
Watched Appa odiga the sibling special, Bin is freaking hilarious. She's a female version of her dad.
Too bad Taksun couldn't be there but I guess he was busy or he might have been a bit too old. Junsu is still my favorite, he's such a oddball.
Today the OT is full of questions and I have one of my own! Please answer if you live or have lived in Seul for any period of time recently!
It is the Strange Hair Mystery! It makes me so curious! There is this really weird male haircut that all male leads have lately and I'd just like to know if it's a kdrama thing or if people really wear this in the city.
It's that haircut really short on the sides with tons of hair combed to the front like to cover a Harry Potter scar. Such weird hair! But they all have it! The main guy in Cyrano, the ghost in WAY, SJS in Master's. It's everywhere!
Hello again! repost, I think I got deleted

OMFG! I made it to OT! I"m jealous of all of you going to Kconn and the meetup. I WANNA GO! Next year! But I'm going to try to make it to the LA Infinite concert in November. Heee!
I've been watching a lot of stuff. I will give my breakdown
1) Good Doctor - having a heart attack over this show and not in a good way. I can't extricate my background of working with people with special needs and my knowledge of autism with the show. HOwever, Joo Won really does seem like he has autism! Badass! I'm even attempting to write against it on my blog, but episode 6 stumped my logic. I'm baffled. As for the other stuff, it's still kind of a mess and the politics is just too overwhelming.
2) Goddess of Fire - omg, so episodic, predictable and boring. Waste of good actors.
3) Who Are You - despite the very irresponsible behavior of the cops, I do like the interpersonal connections. I am baffled that Taecyeon can act! And the second lead from CDDA! I'm really enjoying their chemistry and Kim Jae-wook's (mostly) silence. The ending of 6 was so heartbreaking.
4) Master's Sun - slowly improving! The characters and chemistry were great from the start, but episode 6 sold it for me. I fell in love with the utter second female lead mockery going on. I laughed at the ghost (the mutt), but I totally get being in love with your pet. Me and my cat are a little scary...
5) Lee Soon-shin - I still think IU is improving her acting like WHOA and JJS is my oppa forever and always, but this weekend can't come soon enough
In k-pop news, what do ya'll think of Sony signing Crayon Pop?
For my life, school starts which means my teaching schedule will finally settle. HOORAY!
I miss you, Beanies! I hope you've been well! Now onto read the happenings of OT
Good morning everyone,
The Master's Sun was good. I need to catch up with Good Doctor and Heartless City/Cruel City. In another note, tomorrow will be my hubby 25 year high school reunion. We might go there. I am watching Empire of Gold. It was interesting except everybody seem to have evil side so far. I am on episode 9 and waiting when did Tae Joo and Seo Yoo get married. I think so far Tae Joo like his sunbae more. Today, is Just You which I am looking forward to it. Have a Great Week-end!!!
I'm still working on my very large to-watch movie list and here are some of my thoughts on my second batch of movies (in the order watched):
Sympathy for Lady Vengeance - This one took me a while to finish since I watched it in two sittings (about 9 days apart). Honestly, I found the first third or so to be a bit boring and very different from the other two but this is a movie that requires a lot of patience (more so than Mr. Vengeance which I had the same issue with). Although this was the least gory of the trilogy, it made me the most uncomfortable (not a bad thing). After the full plot/motive is revealed, it forces the audience to question their own morality and demands that they be engaged with the film. Admittedly, there were a few scenes that I initially found confusing or didn't feel 'complete' to me. I think each of the trilogy movies offer something specific in its story telling about vengeance that makes it unique and as such, I've found that I love them all for different reasons.
Mother - I wonder if it's weird that I expected this to be more dark. Might be because I found the movie poster on Netflix to be incredibly creepy on it's own. I found myself intrigued from beginning to end but I expected to like this movie a lot more than I do (I already really like it). I think that's because a lot of the social commentary and humor went over my head while I was watching (I had most of my ah-ha moments after finishing and reflecting and reading reviews). It's a reminder that my extremely limited knowledge of Korean culture can affect my viewing experience and I'll probably need to rewatch this to appreciate it in it's full glory.
How To Use Guys With Secret Tips - Love love love. I wasn't quite sure what to expect going in but I ended up finding this movie to be hilarious. I felt some feminist vibes :).
The Yellow Sea - This one was a lot more gory than I expected but compelling throughout so my eyes stayed on the screen. What's up with mobs/gangs using knives instead of guns (they're not blurred out this time, haha… sigh)? There were a couple of scenes where I wished they would just stick to knives… I don't think I'll ever think of a meat bone the same way again *shudder*. I laughed a few times and then felt bad about it after. For the most part, deeper analysis of the movie on themes of betrayal or desperation or commentary on the identities of Joseonjoks went over my head while I was watching in an effort to figure out what was going on in the plot towards the end (which I'm still confused about).
Quick - A ridiculous movie with over exaggerated expressions, lots of explosions, fancy bikes, and a cheesy romance to boot. But I had so much fun watching it! It doesn't take itself seriously (but the stunts are serious resulting in several broken bones for some stuntmen) so you can shut off your brain for 2 hours and have a good laugh
The Client - Overall, I liked it. I'm not a mystery fan in particular but I've watched my fair share of courtroom/cop shows and this kept my interest throughout (comfortably sitting, I might add). Realistic story with understandable characters and believable end. Jang Hyuk was amazing (not that the other two weren't but I was rallying in his defense so hard and then completely creeped out with that end scene). My favorite scene was hands down when Ha Jung Woo's character gave his closing argument. I haven't seen it done elsewhere so I thought it was genius.
Jeon Woochi - Funny and action filled :). I really liked Kang Dong Wan as Jeon Woochi.
[On a side note: I've seen Joo Jin Mo (1958) in the last three movies I've watched. He has this expression where he always seems angry even when he's not. *SPOILER….. sorta…… ish….* And after 3 movies (The Thieves then The Yellow Sea and Jeon Woo Chi) with Kim Yoon Seok, I'm starting to think he just can't be trusted, like ever.]
After finishing Yellow Sea, I was still a bit on edge. I'm a bit afraid to start The Chaser now, haha. Plus, I'm scarred by Kim Yoon Seok and his meat bone still. Apparently, he's the good guy in this one. I was also effectively creeped out by Choi Min Shik in LAdy Vengeance so I don't know how I'm going to survive "I Saw the Devil" when he gets more screentime being a psycho. I am pretty excited to watch Nameless Gangster with Choi and Ha though. So little time before I start school :(((.
Other than Master's Sun and DAC (which I completed earlier this week), I wasn't intending to watch anything. Then I decided to catch History of the Salaryman but the subs weren't in sync with the video, so I decided to continue with a series I sampled.
I don't think many people have watched Beloved/Dear You, since it's an under-the-radar cable series. It's a realistic melo about a couple dealing with infidelity on both sides and frankly, isn't the sort of series that I would catch (if not for my interest in HJH, who plays the male lead here).
I'm iffy about a storyline about cheating spouses because I, and a lot of others I bet, don't like cheaters and for the life of me, cannot figure out why some spouses can forgive their cheating other halves and have them back in their lives. Personally, I have had friends who have cheated as well as friends who have decided to forgive their cheating spouses. It's not a pretty situation to be caught in between and be the one consulting on both ends; worse still, is having to see my friends give in to their emotions in either situations.
With that said, I actually find myself sympathetic to the main players in the show, in that they actually have good reason (using these words lightly because there's never a good reason to cheat) to stray from and doubt their partners. I'm at ep 7 now and I honestly lost count of how many times I shouted irl for these people to NOT make the mistakes that they eventually do - but at the same time, the choices they make seem substantially backed up by a reasonable enough emotional history.
Other than HJH (who's doing a pretty good job at being the main lead here - he looks mature for his age so it's easier for him to play a 28yo architect/husband) and Choi Yeo Jin, I'm new to the rest of the cast. CYJ plays a rich heiress who's a bitch, but I CAN'T for the life of me find the space to hate her character because she does it... with an air of regal sophistication and scheming intelligence. I'm having a small lady crush on her, lol - she's not conventionally hot but she does have this aura of mature smexiness. I also liked her flamboyant female Casanova character in that Romance series which I eventually dropped because I wasn't that invested in any of the characters' relationships (I IMMENSELY disliked her friend's cheating boyfriend).
STILL, CHEATING IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. EVEN IN DRAMALAND.
I've been feeling the urge to be an expat again, so the last few days I've been actively looking into ESL teaching jobs in the Middle East. Salaries are high there, but it's also pretty competitive -- the majority of the teachers seem to have MAs or even PhDs in some English/ESL/Linguistics/teaching-related field, or at the very least teaching certification/credentials, and the impression I'm getting is that teaching experience in Korea is worth approximately nothing, but... we'll see... There are apparently plenty of unscrupulous recruiters who can generally find positions for those with minimal qualifications, so that might be an option...
There might be a place for me teaching medical English -- apparently the medical schools in the region do all their teaching in English, and I've heard from a few people that there's a huge need for people who can teach medical English -- but these aren't advertised positions, so right now I'm just sending my CV around and hoping :)
On another note, I'm really loving Master's Sun. It's been growing on me more every week. Or perhaps I should say So Ji Sub has been growing on me more every week :) (To everyone who is raving about his hands... YES!)
1) I was looking for drama recaps as well. I don't remember which drama though. I was so excited when I realized that there were so many other Kdrama fans out there from all around the world.
2) I still listen to parts of the Coffee House OST and the Secret Garden OST.
Happy firday everyone! I am very late to the party today it seems.
Got some good news and some bad news on the papers front for me. My work place have received my papers and should hopefully, mayby, in theory going by what they said (but who knows) have sent them. Bad news:no confirmation that they have been sendt, and the visa will take longer as the embassy has stoped doing express service (nice of you to have updated those homepages... )
Dramas:
loving masterz's sun. I don't want anything to happen to those kids. So nvouse about that! Cannot wait to see what will come, that warning from the shaman is making the wheels in my head spinn.
Jade locked palace: started this, not as addicting (to me) as bu bu jing xin. It kinda feels like an idol/disney version of the same story (with some tweeks).
Also started watching the newest "Garo" series. They have steampunkish costumes. Yay!!
Hello everybody!!
Yeah! Week is over, I welcome the weekend!! And I am also late to the party today.
Who is still awake??
QUESTION::::: I am watching 2Weeks and I think the soundtrack sounds somehow like the OST from "Shut Up Flower Boy Band " . Is this my imagination or is it the same composer, singer, band etc?????
Like I said, I am watching "2weeks". It's really exciting. Unfortunately, the bad guys are somehow better organized. Why do the good guys not talk to each other??? If that continues, I will go mad. :-) Or get a heart attack.
The only drama I am watching right now is Two Weeks and I’m super disappointed. (~_~)
Disappointed that I didn’t wait until the end to marathon it! Why is a week such a long time?!?!? I’m not a very patience person when it comes to waiting for the next episode to air. If you could tell, I love this show. I know I am like three weeks behind on this but I just about died when little Su-jin called Tae-san “아빠?” I have had to re-watch that part after almost every episode just to calm myself. Even my husband almost died from the cute. This drama is bad for my fingernails. I know in the back of my mind that they won’t kill off Tae-san anytime soon if they do at all. But I am still super caught up in the suspense.
In other news, I have been trying to start recapping… and failing… I’ve got the recap itself typed up. Does anyone know a way to screen cap where you don’t have to save after every picture (it automatically saves for you)?
Finished my halftime report for Queen Seon Deok this week but I haven't had the chance to watch further yet. Some weeks just get away from you. :P I have been working on powering through I Hear Your Voice to try to make it to the end. Decided not to drop it after all, even with the aspects that exasperate me about it. (I loved GF's description of it as Sesame Street Law in one of the recaps. So. Accurate.) I appreciate what the writer is trying to accomplish thematically, but it's the execution that leaves me adrift. However, I think one of the things she does really well is to craft these wonderfully complex friendships between women that go beyond the sidekick-best friend archetype. We saw a similar evolution in the friendship between Hye-mi and Baek-hee in Dream High and I LOOOOVE it. :)
Hi everybody, happy OT!
I'm posting for the first time even though I've been visiting this website since December. ^^
I really LOVE Dramabeans because it keeps me so well updated on the K-dramaland and I get to read everyone's opinions! From now on, I'll be posting regularly, so it's nice to meet you all! ^_^
Hello Everyone,
You're all wonderful and I should visit you more often! I'm watching man of honor but only slightly because the medication I'm on for pain is making my grasp on reality limited. My grasp on time is also little off. I remember that I was waiting for there to be more than 2 episodes of master's sun before I watch. I also got a reward from dramafever for free 1 month passes to share with friends, I hope it is useful. http://bit.ly/13ypfZJ
Hey Beanies! Been away from the OTs for a few weeks but now I'm making a (short) reappearance :)
I didn't think I'd watch anything after IHYV but luckily Master's Sun and Her Legend are helping me with the withdrawal. Not crazy about either, but they're enjoyable enough. I know a lot of people are watching Master's Sun but anyone catching Her Legend? I haven't seen it mentioned in the OT so far.
I have been commenting up above. In response to the first message question , which is very good meislee, i came across DB sometime in 2010. I have been watching kdrama for a good 3 years before i stumbled into DB. I was watching DVDs from a friend's library and into adjustment with new place, new work. Then came to where i am now as an immigrant and took a while to find a job. I convinced a couple of friends into kdrama and somehow, when two or more people who are into kdrama gather, we needed to top up our stories of real life of stars and better analysis. I remember visiting a friend and she was into BoF and i think that is how i came to religiously open DB. Sometime in Kim Sam Soon i think i read a preview by DB but couldn't locate it again. not so google dependent then. So, that is how long ago it was.
OST? I just opened some of those you mentioned and will ask my teenager to download them for me. The city hunter sounds like a good ringtone. Wonder how i can use it for that. Somehow, the one on my playlist are the songs from Nodame Cantabile, including the classical orchestral pieces. But the OST, it is there, and somehow wax nostalgic when i hear it everytime i open my player in a 35-45 min bus ride to the city. I would start with my metta meditation then it just plays along, then i get transported to the world of Nodame. Yay. Life is fun when you wander in and out in the world DB shares.
Greetings:) I just finished watching Gu Family book :(
I am one of those silent readers of DB but this drama ending has put an end to my slumber. I have two alternate ending in my head:
SPOILERS ALERT
First preferred one: Kang-chi and Yeo-wool get married, after a month or so YW is kidnapped. All the events follow as they are but off-course the intensity of Kang-chi’s rescue would be even more as he would be rescuing his wife who he has grown to love even more. All the events follow till the confrontation with Jo Gwan-woong. GW’s minion aim and shots, YW see this coming and cover KC. Everyone is shocked by the sound of gunfire. Close up to YW, the bullet hits her, but at the same time is deflected back out of her, and shots Gwan woong’s hand tearing it in pieces. Everyone is shocked….Gwan woong falls to the ground in agonizing pain, looks up at YW with horror in his eyes:
Gwan woong: What…..
Rest of group looks at YW: whose wound is healing on its own. YW looks down at her stomach
Kang-chi: taking a step back, “don’t tell me you are….”
YW: smiles “I was going to tell you after all this is over”
Second one: All events follow for the last episode till Kang-chi confronts Yeo-wool.
Kang-chi: (full of shock looking at Yeo-wool) “Yeo-wool”
Yeo-wool: “how do you know my name?”
Kang-chi: Smiling happily, till he get stuck by what he sees behind Yeo-wool, a peach blossom tree and a crescent moon hanging up above….drum rolls in the background. His smiling face becomes twisted with rage. Even before the viewers can say Kimchi, Kang-chi turns into a full-fledged gumiho- full nine tailed, green eyed, clawed monster. In his mind he keeps thinking “No, NO, NOOO”.
Yeo-wool: Terrified beyond words, stumbles backward
Kang-chi cannot believe this is happening to him….he takes a step forward and YW fires not once but till there are no bullets left in her gun.
Kang-chi as he hits the ground remembers what the monk had said to him: “there is another thing KC that you should keep in mind, gumiho may live for a long time but they can easily be killed by someone who they love and trust. Monk gives KC a hard look and then smiles “but I guess in your case that will not happen as YW loves you more than you love her. She will never harm you.”
KC lay on the ground motionless……
In one of the threads someone said that the ending shows something like endless and everlasting love :) I think it will only be the case if YW have her memories intact. Because the reason she loves KC unconditionally is because he saved her life and put his own life in danger the first time they met. Her love is based on this one event and she struggles to better herself because of this one event. This new YW did not experience anything of this nature. So why would she develop the same type of love for KC as the old YW? Also, childhood experiences always carry such depth and value, that they cannot be replaced by similar adult experiences. I don’t think his saving her in this lifetime will carry the same impact as an unarmored child putting his own life in danger to protect a stranger would.
I am off to my slumber again. It was nice to see I was not alone in my suffering. :) I hope this is not out of place....I have not read the OT yet. Just wanted to get this off my chest so I can breath....takes a deep breath.
First off, my definition of a Candy Girl:
1. Poverty stricken or at least heavily in debt, often both.
2. Totally good hearted, and no matter how she gets screwed over she will smile and forgive the wrong doers.
3. Is typically a total airhead when it comes to seeing what is going on around her.
4. More often than not, is an orphan, or with one parent - who usually has some terminal disease. As an alternative, she may be taking care of younger siblings.
5. Is a brilliant fashion designer, but can't get a job because she only finished high school.
6. Lives in a shack at the top of a hill with 387 steps and no road. Will wash her designer clothes in a tub.
7. Even though in total poverty, will carry a Samsung Galaxy S4 4G cell phone.
-- There are other characteristics, but those are the main ones.
My rant with Candy Girl is that there seem to be so few variations on her - she is almost like a fixture in dramas for the past 10 years, and never gets any smarter. After being screwed over by evil relatives 492 times, she still has not caught on that not everyone loves her.
Solution: The Hard Ass Candy Girl. Similar at the start to all the above, but quickly figures out that her evil step sister is screwing her over, so she plants drugs in her handbag. She plants a bug in the evil MIL's room and finds out that she is having an affair, so she leaks the info to the press. She figures out that all of her friends are idiots, and dumps them and gets some smart ones. She decides that the jerk Chaebol Prince really IS a jerk, and hooks up with his main rival.
We watched Pasta and then (after deciding that Kdrama was soooo much more interesting than American TV, started looking for a new drama to watch, and that brought us DB!! Yaaay! We have been reading-lurking for a little over a year!
I loved the final song from You're Beautiful, and would find myself thinking of it randomly for a few weeks (and then playing it from youtube or somesuch) and still like to listen to it every now and again!
Thanks DB powerhouses! Your drama prowess is appreciated!! xo
I am late to the "game" this week. Real life intrudes.
-Watching Masters Sun. Not crack, but definitely watchable. I do not love any of the characters but what I do enjoy is the layers, puns, metaphors, references, etc., and the isolated moments that pop. Nothing more that I love to do is connect the dots, but alas, I do not have time or energy for more than cursory delving into the this with dramas right now. I really like that Taeyang not only says, hey, that guy is hot (about both of them), and is a big flirt. I have no expectations that this will continue once one of the love interests throws any heat, I've been watching k dramas way too long now to hold onto any expectation that a female character will own her sexuality. It's too rare an occurrence. . It is nice to see a little subversion in tropes, it's definitely needed. I do like that the friend zone lead male/second lead is subverted a little bit, not fully, but some. As is the second female lead role-she's really not interested in Helmet Hair, she's got the tingles for the Hot Mall Cop. The second female lead does not get much to do as of yet, and she has a really cosmetically altered face so her range of expression is reduced, but she does a lot with what time she has. I seriously dislike Helmet Hairs clothes. Shudder. The Hugh Hefner look. Shudder. If "they" were going for a rich creeper look, it worked.
-The Good Doctor. Not crack. Some of it actually pretty annoying. Obviously Dr. TEN is in a political relationship with the Mean Hospital Heiress, which given his personality, does not seem in character. I like the female lead character. I like Joo-won's acting. I am wary of where they are going with a romantic relationship with Si on and Dr. Cha.
-Who Are You. The eye ball popping gets a little over the top, I dislike the weekly damsel in distress mode of the female lead, but it's an over all easy watch, with an enjoyable supporting cast, without killing too many brain cells. I an enjoying anticipating what the storyline will be with Kim Jae-wook.
Start back to uni on Tuesday. Not feeling it. I am usually pumped to go back to classes. I think part of it is I have 7-10 pm class, which can be energy sucking. I shall persevere. I have been sitting here procrastinating for an hour when I have a ton of stuff to do. Ugh. I was hoping to sign up for a class that goes abroad to the UK in the Spring, but they are now requiring you to pay for it upfront NOW to hold the spot and get reimbursed once your scholarship kicks in which does not happen until JANUARY. I do not have several grand laying around to toss at my uni to hold a spot-if i did I 'd just travel to the UK on my own, sheesh.
I am thinking about a new rice cooker. I have a stainless steel one, which I like because hey no teflon worries health wise and scratching wise, but it is way too big. Sometimes I just need to cook one cup of rice, so I need to downsize. I do not like cooking big batches of rice and eating it left over. for days. I am debating if I want to just get a cheapo tiny little one or spring big bucks for a 3 cup model from a good brand. I eat rice at least twice a week, sometimes every day when I am low on funds. Any feedback?
1. I was searching 4 anything Jang Geon Suk after watching Baby and me, he was still handsome then. Then I saw You're beautiful recaps of DB. YB was my first-kdrama love , I watched kdramas but not that addicted or fanatic. And that was 2009.
Now i'm into almost anything korean related, music to drama and even to somewhat into their culture.
2. OSTs that I love/my fave dramas also
-You're beautiful
-Secret garden
-City-hunter
-Queen In hyun's man
-Arang and the magistrate
Others:
It has to be u - Cinderella's sister
Fox rain- My gf is a gumiho
Dream high and BOF got several good songs as well.
My first ever rant for korean movie, since I don't know where else to rant. Sorry for my lack of english skill, please bare with me
**********
It's sunday morning, and I have nothing to do. I browse, and find this movie: Crazy First Love with Cha Tae-Hyun and Son Ye-Jin. (Wow, I love both) and it's comedy (it's Cha Tae-Hyun strong suit!) so, I watch it. No brainer.
100min later, my brain really left me. Urgh! Stupidest movie ever!!!
Maybe not ever, but I feel really annoyed after watching it. After every scene I just keep telling myself "oh, maybe there'll be a nice twist" "Wait a little bit more" but, no. Things are just getting worse. My patience get me nowhere, just like the Cha's character in the movie.
One thing I most annoyed (actually I am annoyed by 90% of the movie) is the usage of satoori by Cha and Sohn's father here. No, I'm not korean and I can't tell if they speak satoori incorrectly.
I love Busan satoori since Answer Me 1997. Some say it is manly, others may say it is the language of country bum and gangsters, 'unintelegent way of speaking'.
And in the movie, the characters who speak satoori are really idiots! They can't think for theirselves, can't think straight, just stupid. Argh!
in the end note, I read somewhere, Cha Tae-Hyun's interview in Healing Camp, he said to have panic attack and anxiety because his movie is a flop (or movies?), from what I see, that's just a sure effect from a stupid movie, like this 'Crazy First Love'. Just, be careful in picking movies next time Cha Tae Hyun!

HI OT~

Happy Friday to everyone across the world.
And Real Life, which is a drama all on its own.
Everyone have an enjoyable weekend!

Korean Cultural Guide item:

Uh-Oh.

Good Morning, My Wondrous Beans!

Brief today, so much to do, so little time!
Watched:

Hi Everyone!
I hope everyone is doing well today.
Still Watching:
- Shark
- IHYV
- Dong Yi
Caught about 20 minutes of episodes 5 & 6 of Empire of Gold. It's actually kind of interesting, from what I can gather. I'll have to watch the full episodes later on, one day, when time permits.
Take care everyone and have a great Friday!

ch10z -
I liked Love Around - the characters are nicely consistent, right down to the annoying relatives.
Happy Friday!

Happy OT :)
Let's start with the low lights this week:

Hello everyone!
Thanks!

Have a good healthy safe weekend, all.

Hi all!

Happy friday!

I was born on Janyary 25, so...I found Hwang Jung Eum was also born January 25.
From other famous people, Virginia Woolf, William Colgate (toothpaste)
and Steve Prefontaine (long distance runner) were born January 25.
Well, I really like running. And I write.
And, man, do I like curly hair, but....not the kind Hwang Jung Eum sported in Full House 2.

-end rant-

Hi, all! I hope everyone is having a good Friday!
YES!)

Yay!!

Wish you a nice weekend!!

Happy OT!

Happy Friday Beanies!

Rant of the Week: Candy Girls.

Your drama prowess is appreciated!! xo

It is a cruel joke when you reach ep 7 of a 16 episode drama and discover the rest of it is unsubbed.
Anyone know some place other than Viki where I can find "What is Love?" with English subs?

Hello Beanies,
I am late to the "game" this week.
Happy viewing Beanies!
