Age of Feeling gets its hero and leading ladies
by javabeans
Sooooo, I’ve got some good news and some bad news for ya. And maybe some more bad news. I’ll let you decide which is which.
KBS’s 1930s period action-melo series Age of Feeling is back in action with a flurry of casting announcements, so hopefully three time’s the charm as idol-actor Kim Hyun-joong (Playful Kiss, Boys Before Flowers) takes the leading role. (The drama was previously passed up by Lee Jun-ki, who took Two Weeks instead, and Kwon Sang-woo, who took Medical Top Team.) My interest was piqued ever since I first heard this show announced, so I’m glad that it’s heading into actual production; the fizzled castings had me worried for a while. The show is set in Shanghai during the years of Japan’s occupation of Korea and much of the Pacific, which offers up plenty of opportunities for drama up in this drama.
One of the leading ladies will be played by Im Soo-hyang (IRIS 2, I Do I Do), who reportedly fell in love with the script and beat out several actresses for the role. Her character is an “ambitious and irresistible” woman with loads of charisma. She has a romantic relationship with hero Jung-tae (Kim Hyun-joong), but it’s because of his father that she loses the parents she’d only just found after ten years of separation, and thus twists their relationship into a fraught love-hate version.
Kim So-eun (Happy Endings, Horse Healer) will be taking up another lead role (reports state that she’s verbally agreed and will be working out casting details) as a young lady with a tough, courageous attitude. (So… Im Soo-hyang is Rie and Kim So-eun is Mok Dan?) Her character becomes a singer (okay, so flashes of Lala), only to take up with the independence movement (no, Mok Dan again) once her first love dies. Thus she “holds a microphone in one hand and a bomb in the other.”
I foresee that with the genre, time period, and character types in play, Age of Feeling is sure to attract a number of Gaksital comparisons; that’s just inevitable. I do hope that the series can find a way to make this its own thing, because there’s a wealth of narrative possibilities in this world. Even if my reaction to the casting has dimmed the excitement a bit. Just please don’t pull a Poseidon with all your actor-swapping and story-sucking. Please?
Age of Feeling will be a 24-episode drama to premiere in November.

Very big LOL to some comments.
Giving KHJ the last chance?? Who the hell are you to give him a chance? It is ok if you don't give him a chance. No one ever begs you to give him a chance.
And if you think his acting sucks,it is your opinion,so ok,don't watch it.
If the production company or broadcasting station was unable to gain profit from this,it would be their loss. Not your loss.
What's wrong with you, guys to worry about it??LOL
If you guys want the actor you like, then produce a drama by yourself and watch it.
This drama and KHJ do nothing to you.But you are disappointed yourself. ha ha ha

Yes, Kim Hyun Joong was probably offered the main part because of his popularity and bank-ability because, obviously, the producers want someone whom people will actually want to see onscreen. But do you really think they'd cast him based on his looks and popularity if he had no potential to make the role great?
It is fair to judge him based on his previous work, but PK was 3 years ago...if he really wanted to be in dramas just to be in them, he could have been doing that for the last 3 years based on his popularity alone. Maybe he was just waiting to get the right role and one that he felt would challenge him as an actor and help him gain experience at the same time. City Conquest was suppose to allow him that, but it was unfortunately not aired and we might never know why or how much he has improved.
If KHJ takes up a role as a flower boy, people will say "Oh, he's just playing another flower boy." If he takes a role similar to his real self, like some of you say he should, then people will say "Oh, he's not really acting cuz it's similar to his real self." Yet when he wants to challenge himself and take a big role, everyone shoots him down for not being able to act and they are so "disappointed" in the casting.
Why don't we just wait and see? And if you really dislike him that much, just don't watch it. =) But I'm guessing some of you will watch it anyway just for a chance to bash him.

I've been thinking about this, and I think that for KHJ this is a relatively risk free venture. There aren't any real expectations of him as an actor so if he fails, it's as expected. If he is at all successful it's a big deal and he has exceeded expectation. And I'm sure Bae Yong Joon is going to see to it that his protege succeeds if he has to coach him through every shot himself.
I recently watched BBF again, and found he acting of the two male leads both worse and better than I remembered. KHJ style was to underplay, and I think next to LMH over playing he comes across as wooden, when so many of his scenes are really quite well done.
I adore LMH and I think he may very well be a once in a generation actor, but in this show he ran away with it, and every one paled by comparison

To all the Kim Hyun Joong naysayers... KHJ's acting appeared soulless in his 2 dramas because the characters were devoid of any feelings for others. They were geniuses trapped in their own mind. He played them exactly as they should have been. I've watched the Chinese & Japanese versions of Playful Kiss and he has the character right on.
I am sooo looking forward to his comback on the screen and anxiously waiting to see him act again.

Coming from a forever Triple S: please please, leader/ Hyun joong, improve your acting. There's a limit to what even a fan (of your variety show persona and the SS501 group work) can take. This doesn't mean you and the rest of the SS501 members don't hold a special part of my heart anymore ( that would never be the case). I am just asking for that part of the heart to not to be wrangled again. OK? Thnx, love ya still~

Coming from a forever Triple S: please please, leader / Hyun Joong, take the lead role and shut some mouths once and for all. I've been waiting for his return on a drama and I'm much anticipating it... Can't wait to see him again acting!!!!!
As a fan you don't need to agree with everything he does or says but because of people like you, TS get bashed by other fans of HJ...!!!!! So thank you very much, you did an incredible job giving your support to HJ and carrying TS' name...!!!!! Besides, who are you to ask him to improve his acting???? Are you a professional actor???? Or have you seen him after PK??? How do you know he hasn't improved already??? Again, great way to support one of our boys...!!!!!

Will watch this drama only because of Kim Hyun Joong. Loved him in Boys Over Flowers and Playful Kiss. Both of those dramas introduced me to Korean drama in general and they will always mean something special for me!

Even if interesting casting choices like Yoo Ah In and a combination of faces that bring solid acting and visual freshness, combine with experienced director, DP and production crew, it still comes down to the Script, the Script and the Script. There should be a compelling story to illuminate some background and events and emotions of that time in history, with maybe a hint -in a heartwarming way- of its impact and evolution to more stable cultural relationships now. There is no substitute for good story-telling and script integrity. The characters should have some complexity and fit together. Hopefully the script won't be compromised to the egos or flat skills of the cast members or time constraints.

If you still think KHJ has no emotion or is a robot actor...
Unfortunately, the characters he played in BOF and PK had those types of personalities. He was also VERY YOUNG. I have GREAT EXPECTATIONS. I know he won't disappoint us. He's not the flower boy kid he was in 2010. Look forward to some great action scenes too. He's been working hard on his skills as a character actor and as an action man.
