Upcoming drama previews: Master, Doctor, Who Are You, Her Legend

Teasers galore! We’re gearing up for a new wave of summertime dramas, and have the previews to prove it.

First up, we have the Hong sisters writing their ninth rom-com miniseries with Master’s Sun. It’s the Wednesday-Thursday show starring Gong Hyo-jin as the ghost-seeing heroine, who works for the haughty boss-man played by So Ji-sub.

The trailer has a distinctly Addams Family-esque camp-horror factor, which I dearly, dearly hope pays off in the final product. It could make for something very fun and quirky, or it could flop big time. We’ll have to wait and see.

In the teaser, So Ji-sub narrates, “Her world is a little… special.” That’s puttin’ it mildly. She sports a Mona Lisa smile and says, “I’ve been waiting for you.”

On the flipside of the same ghost-seeing coin, then we have tvN’s upcoming Monday-Tuesday series Who Are You, where the heroine (So Yi-hyun) wakes up from a six-year coma and can see dead people. Her leading man is Taecyeon, who’s of the “Prove it with science!” camp, and they work together as officers in the lost and found department who resolve unsettled issues through the objects left behind.

I would never have predicted it, and it half-kills me to admit because I like the Master’s Sun cast SO SO much more than the Who Are You cast (who, meh), but if I had to place bets based on teasers, I’ve gotta go with Who Are You. But time will tell.

JTBC has a summer drama entry with an August Monday-Tuesday series Her Legend, which is a success story of a young woman with a dream to make it big designing handbags, which sounds just terrible and clichéd and is saved perhaps merely by dint of being on JTBC, which as a way of taking mundane premises and doing something thoughtful with them.

I’ll say it—this teaser bores me—but I do expect the show to have the brand of low-key warmth and charm of most JTBC offerings.

Last but not least is another Monday-Tuesday show: Joo-won’s autistic-savant surgery series Good Doctor, co-starring Moon Chae-won. The plot may be Doogie Howser, but the camera work looks gorgeous. Medical human dramas are so dependent on execution since the medical plots are often just filler or placeholders for the theme of the day, so I think the high production values here are a promising sign.

Luuurve that teaser for "Master's Sun"! Their smiles at the end! Augh. Can't wait! I find the Hong sisters fend better when they're paired with PDs who fit their style of funny. I think you guys mentioned it on a podcast once, but I do think a part of the reason for the "Big" catastrophe was its look. It was pretty to look at, but there was no chemistry between the writing and cinematography.

My money's on "Master" over "Who Are You".

"Her Legend"... meh.

"Good Doctor"... eeeeeee! Haha. It must be my love for Joowon speaking, because I am EXCITED!!!! I'm not much a fan of Moon Chaewon, but I found her so charming in this teaser. Joowon is so good looking, as always. Ha.

**AND OH, I clicked on that link of Lee Jongseok in a Superman costume after the "Master" teaser ended and was led to a Superman trailer with "I Hear Your Voice" clips, and... lollllll. Nice. Haha.

Master's Sun looks the most interesting out of all of these teasers.

AHH! No time for sleep or school for the rest of the year, huh?

I'm super excited for Good Doctor, the teaser looks AH-mazing. It gives us a look into the character portrayals, and may i say, Joo-won is killing it. MCW looks sweet too!

Master's Sun looks like fun. Looks both parts creepy and romantic and I'd really really love it if he show actually had a couple of genuine horror moments in it with that kind of teaser and plot. Why not?? Go for it, I say! Scare me and then kiss it better. And this is coming from a person who generally stays away from horror flicks, lol.

Who Are You fascinates me. It's kind of mysterious and I like the helping-dead-people storyline. It would be cooler if not all the dead people were good. Add in a ghost that seems nice but wants to cause some mischief...I derno. Curious about Kim Jae Wook's character. I am excited to see him but he's such a mystery as well. Meh, Taecyeon, mehhh. I say it a lot --I like him, but he's boring as an actor. Plus his character is just as mysterious as KJW's which is not that great in his case...because it makes him seem kinda useless. At this rate, I feel like you could scrap his character all-together and still have a show.

Good Doctor's trailer was lovely! I always cringe at portrails of disorders in Korean-drama's though...if Joo Won manages to pull it off...if the show and scriptwriters manage to pull it off I will give them a big round of applause. It could go horribly wrong or it could be awesome and touching! Though, I have to say Joo Won makes himself look a little unstable...I dunno if I would hire him as a doctor with that body language since he looked more like a patient to me. I was hoping he would be more put together but with some kind of tendency for avoiding people so that you can tell something is off. He kind of looked like a scared mouse. Buuuut, we'll see.

It's important to note that Joo Won's character is dealing with Savant Syndrome where autism is just a part of the package. Obviously there will be some inaccuracies but disabilities like these come in many so many forms and everyone have a different experience. Mental disabilities(real ones) are so rare in kdramas, even if they make it like a stereotypical portrayal of Savant it is more important that they convey what it is in large. I've only taken a few courses of psychology but I wrote a special paper on neuropsychological conditions, so this will be interesting to see. I can't speak for people with Savant of course, but the hyperactive information retrieval they are described to have is very tastefully done and feels realistic in just the few seconds of the teaser.

I luv Gong Hyo-jin and the Hong sisters can usually entertain me for like 10/16 episodes - but somehow I haven't been able to fully finish any of their last couple dramas...I just get frustrated and quit so hoping this one breaks the curse :)

I'm watching Who are you for obvious reasons of the pretty, but I like the noir feel its giving off. I thought it was going to be cuter with that first teaser, but I think its gearing up to be a little more dark. I could go for that.

Nope for fashion drama

and I'm giving Good Doctor like the tightest leash EVER. As a person who has worked with autistic children and their families, I side-eye everything. Plus, if their was ever a residency director who accepted a candidate like that into a training program, idk man idk... dramatic license and all I suppose though right?

It's not autism. If you watch the trailer and pause 10 seconds in, you will see letters in English that says "savant syndrome". Try looking it up, it's a whole lot more than just autism.

I'm really looking forward to Master's Sun and Good Doctor...is it August yet?! However, my excitement for Good Doctor is mainly due to the cast, not the premise. I share some of the same concerns as many of the previous commenters regarding the misrepresentation of autism. As someone who has an autistic relative, I fear the drama stereotyping Joo-won's character. Hopefully the drama will prove my worries wrong!

On a side note, this debate has me thinking of other k-dramas with autistic characters. I remember in Shining Inheritance/ Brilliant Legacy there being an autistic brother. However, I only ever finished the first few episodes so I don't really remember how his character was portrayed. Can any one fill me in on the portrayal of autism in that show?

IIRC it was pretty well done, surprisingly so.
And, MCW was in that, too.

I agree with jomo there, too. It was a pretty good portrayal. It was believable and not over-done or under-done. And *surprise!* that actor was Yeon Jun Suk who played young Kim Nam Gil in Shark!

I also heard Park Ki Woong managed to do a pretty good autistic character with an affinity for stocks (??) in Story of a Man but I haven't watched that drama.

Yeah PKW was very good (and cute ^^) in this as well as the whole cast, especially Kim Kang Woo imo (love him !). The drama is AWESOME (by the Gaksital's director) !!!

Well, that's good to know! Not that those two portrayals necessarily mean that the one in Good Doctor will also be pretty good, but at least it's reassuring to hear that k-drama's track record with the portrayal of autism isn't totally negative or anything.

with this recap, I can decide which one will be my next drama. yihaa. Good Doctor! I don't pick Hong Sister drama because the treaser is freaking me out but I kinda wondering the whole story. But I don't like ghostly drama. I think I just read the recaps.

Thank you JB.

Love from Indonesia.

These all look good except for the Handbag Girl - that one smacks of "Fashion King" and it's too soon to travel that road again.

Joo-Won's autistic savant piece is interesting, especially if the writer handles the illness with the finesse of Su Ae's "Thousand Days".

I'm looking forward to 3 out of 4 so that's not too bad even with the girl from Stars Falling From The Sky you could not pay me to care about handbags.

The two ghost ones I love supernatural stuff especially Asian horror and with the Hong sisters apparently going more campy/humorous and the TvN looking like it's going for more serious scare stuff I'd say they're different enough to watch at the same time.

The medical one honestly I'm not a big fan of medical dramas and as I have been diagnosed with Asperger's, though I guess since Asperger's no longer exists it's just high functioning autism, I'm not really a fan of the poor treatment of mental disorders on t.v. but Moon Chae Won trumps that and makes it a must watch for me.

You know, I can't watch anyone in a role like the savant Joo Won's playing without hearing Robert Downing, Jr/Kirk Lazarus's speech from Tropic Thunder.

Let's see if he takes the master thespian's advice. If he keeps it toned down, he won't go home empty handed from the awards' shows like Sean Penn did.

Drama “Good Doctor” delivering a warm-hearted and serene message finally unveils.

KBS new drama “ Good Doctor” (written by Park Jae Bum, directed by Lee Min Soo) premiers on August 5, releases the first poignant teaser on July 10th through KBS website, attracts attention.

Through the 1minute video, the symbolic portrait of the young man Park Shi On (Joo Won) with personalities of 10 years old, who suffers autism and developmental disabilities, and his encounter with Cha Yoon Seo (Moon Chae Won) draws a strong curiosity from the audience.

Before the teaser “ the conventional medical dramas often depict intense surgery scenes. However, this drama wants to focus on the medical assistance, which the main actors Joo Won and Moon Chae Won emphasize in their portrayal the meaning of the meeting.

The meeting in the daily crossing of two people instead of hospital rooms and operation table appraises the highlight on the meaningful moment of their encounter.

Especially, in this teaser, the production team makes the teaser through the optical view of an autism person to show how autism people see the world and acknowledge to overcome the agony of autism, which describes not only ”disease” to further as“ failure”. This is the goal that the teaser wants to subject to.

This drama makes the public notice the significance of Cha Yoon Seo as Park Si On the biggest helper. In “Good Doctor”, the production team wants to reveal the remaining intact about the dimensions of difference and coexistence between warmth, conformation, healing. Delivering new impression to the audiences, “Good Doctor” receives high anticipation.

Representatives of Logos film said, ‘“Good Doctor” excludes all political elements in the traditional medical dramas, instead focusing on the represent of healing aspect, creates a new form of medical dramas.” And “ In order to produce a great drama, the actors and staffs do their best to bring more expectation for the viewers.”

"personalities of 10 years old, who suffers autism and developmental disabilities,"

This line makes me even more wary of the drama. It's kinda a poor understanding of autism...

Autistic people don't have under developed personalities...

and not all of them have developmental disabilities (as in cognition).

Mostly it's an inability to read social cues. (If simplified beyond belief).

So I have this huge feeling of apprehension. Given that the preview itself raised some red flags for me which made me go, "Wha?" and it was verified by other posters here with more experience than I have, I feel even more wary since they couldn't even nail a simple preview.

I have this creeping feeling that he'll be the only autistic person in the whole drama which just will make it worse too. (Bechdel test for disabilities).

Huge sense of unease. I can hope they prove me wrong, but I can only see this going south and perpetuating the problems listed.

I wanted to point out that a normal woman would never walk up to a twitchy, spastic, weirdo like that and talk to him unless she had body armor and a can of mace ready.

Then, it occurred to me that this was, after all, Moon Chae Won, and if Moon Chae Won walked up to ME on the street and smiled at me like that I'd probably get all twitchy and spastic myself.

I actually liked all of these teasers a HELL of a lot.

The Master's Sun had me hooked from the first release of the stills. I'm kind of neutral about So Ji-sub and one was of the few who never warmed up to Seo In-guk in Answer Me, but Gong Hyo-jin I pretty much worship, and seeing her smile creeptastically was enough to make me giddy. Hong sisters, please don't disappoint me!

Who Are You's teasers threw me a lot because I was in the "could not even care less" camp about it prior. But now I'm cautiously optimistic; the Cute does not a good drama make, but it never hurts and boy was the Cute rearing its head. Also, I finally got around to looking at the stills, and on a purely shallow note, second lead Kim Jae-wook looks spectacular.

At this point, I'm of the belief that jTCB is in possession of some serious fairy-dust-mojo that makes everything good. So even the fairly commonplace teaser that promised nothing interesting was enough to make me curious. Also, Choi Jung-won looks natural and pretty, and I've never actively hated her unlike some of the drama fan base. Her Legend will probably not be on the level of, say, A Wife's Credentials or the currently airing Heartless City, but it's all in the execution, and jTCB hasn't had a serious slip-up yet.

It was actually the music of the Good Doctor teaser that made me interested--those opening strains of music are from Snow Patrol's "The Lightning Strike" which is a pretty moody and atmospheric song. I hope the drama can capture that same ambience throughout; the plot description sounds like it could veer dangerously into the "sickeningly earnest" category, and it would be great if all the "heartwarming" could be balanced by some introspection and seriousness.

But really, I'm so excited. 2013's slump is finally over.

Thanks for sharing the info.

I'll probably check out all of these except the handbag person drama.

Both MS teaser and the 2nd WAY teaser look more like promos, not actual content of the show.

I don't rely too heavily on teasers and even take the basic descriptions given out with a grain of salt. We all know not to be surprised if a show is not exactly as advertised. I mean look at I Hear Your Voice-it was first billed as a Cop and Lawyer that team up with a high school boy that could read minds to solve unsolvable cases. That's not exactly wrong, but it's not quite accurate either. :)

mmm i really dig the format of this post! it's nice to have all the teasers in one place together, and see all at once what's coming up.

i'm most interested in master's sun and who are you, but i'm not getting my hopes up. it's always fun to check into new shows, but i've learned to dial down my expectations since the most random shows end up being my favorites.

Mmmm no. For me is "Master’s Sun" over "Who are you" Although I love Taecyeon, I don't love him enough to watch an entire drama just for him and the teasers dont encourage me. If the Hong Sisters return to their usual awesomeness, "Master’s Sun" Its going to be good.

Handbags, out. Good Doctor....Aaaa....maybe.
