Upcoming drama previews: Master, Doctor, Who Are You, Her Legend
by javabeans
Teasers galore! We’re gearing up for a new wave of summertime dramas, and have the previews to prove it.
First up, we have the Hong sisters writing their ninth rom-com miniseries with Master’s Sun. It’s the Wednesday-Thursday show starring Gong Hyo-jin as the ghost-seeing heroine, who works for the haughty boss-man played by So Ji-sub.
The trailer has a distinctly Addams Family-esque camp-horror factor, which I dearly, dearly hope pays off in the final product. It could make for something very fun and quirky, or it could flop big time. We’ll have to wait and see.
In the teaser, So Ji-sub narrates, “Her world is a little… special.” That’s puttin’ it mildly. She sports a Mona Lisa smile and says, “I’ve been waiting for you.”
On the flipside of the same ghost-seeing coin, then we have tvN’s upcoming Monday-Tuesday series Who Are You, where the heroine (So Yi-hyun) wakes up from a six-year coma and can see dead people. Her leading man is Taecyeon, who’s of the “Prove it with science!” camp, and they work together as officers in the lost and found department who resolve unsettled issues through the objects left behind.
I would never have predicted it, and it half-kills me to admit because I like the Master’s Sun cast SO SO much more than the Who Are You cast (who, meh), but if I had to place bets based on teasers, I’ve gotta go with Who Are You. But time will tell.
JTBC has a summer drama entry with an August Monday-Tuesday series Her Legend, which is a success story of a young woman with a dream to make it big designing handbags, which sounds just terrible and clichéd and is saved perhaps merely by dint of being on JTBC, which as a way of taking mundane premises and doing something thoughtful with them.
I’ll say it—this teaser bores me—but I do expect the show to have the brand of low-key warmth and charm of most JTBC offerings.
Last but not least is another Monday-Tuesday show: Joo-won’s autistic-savant surgery series Good Doctor, co-starring Moon Chae-won. The plot may be Doogie Howser, but the camera work looks gorgeous. Medical human dramas are so dependent on execution since the medical plots are often just filler or placeholders for the theme of the day, so I think the high production values here are a promising sign.

Well, I'm still holding out hope for Good Doctor. I'm pretty good at ignoring reality, so I'll just sit tight and enjoy (I hope).
Maybe I'll give the others a shot...probably Master's Sun over the other one since I'm not a huge fan of the leads in that one.

"I'm pretty good at ignoring reality"
LOL agree. sometimes i wonder, why do people watch television or movies? for reality?
first and foremost i watch for entertainment.
Reality comes after. I watch k-dramas to get away from the real world and enter some sort of fantasy. Don't get me wrong, portrayals of reality are appreciated, but you can't expect it in every show.
I totally get why people are peeved when their portrayals are misinforming or people begin to associate what happens in k-dramas to the real world because it's just not true.
just gotta be aware to separate the two.

I'm most excited for Good Doctor! Joo Won has never done it for me before but he looks like a poor puppy and I just want to hug him! Moon Chae Won is lovely and she is beautiful, but I have the most superficial gripe which is that she should wear more makeup... Just a little touch of pink/red on her cheeks and lips would make her infinitely prettier in my eyes. I missed her long wavy hair she sported during NG last year. She still look like a proper doll, though.
There are a lot of controversy with respect to the autism issue for this show. They must handle this show with the utmost sensitivity regarding Joo Won's character, or... I'm going to be a big baby and cry out of disappointment if they don't portray autism in a realistic manner. It can be a real turn-off for some people who know for themselves autism is not like that in real life. The trailer seemed harmless to me. I have a mildly autistic cousin myself, and the minute this show does something unrealistic to Joo Won's character, I'm going to stay as far away as I can. Promising casts and a good PD. I didn't much like God's Quiz, so I'm wary a bit. Please, dramagods (and writernim).
Master's Sun seemed more whimsical and interesting than Who are you. The latter's trailer looked like a commercial, as I think someone said earlier.
Her Legend's trailer felt uninspired and infinitely MEH... The female lead's passion for designing bags doesn't feel tangible to me. LOL this is because all bags look the same to me and I cannot differentiate/detect the subtleties of design in most bags. Not a bag person. How much can you actually change the look of a bag? (Also, I don't get the obsession with shoes at all while we're at it.) Maybe it will be a nice surprise, which I do hope it is because jTBC has been on a roll with producing good quality dramas and I don't want anything to taint their almost-perfect record.
I really hope at least one of these dramas will be good as I'm checking them all out. These past seven months had been a little disappointing. Kdrama slump is the worst thing ever.

I am only watching Master's Sun because of Hong Sisters BUTa little worried because of their last drama's BIG disappointment. I hope they could gain back their good reputation with their latest project.
I was planning to watch Good Doctor because my dream love team Joo Won and Moon Chae Won are going to lead the drama but when I heard the plot, I was very excited. The trailer gave me a brief glimpse of their characters. And I am quite satisfied. :)

I'm interested in Master's Sun and hope it will be fun and entertaining with memorable characters like the previous Hong sisters' dramas that I've watched. The teaser was interesting - I liked the glimpse of an actual ghost. It hints at them pushing into actual horror territory and as long as they can combine the spookiness with some fun, it will hopefully be a good watch.
I don't care for Taecyeon AT ALL but I'm intrigued by the premise of Who Are You so I might give it a try. I'm hoping it will surprise me.
Not a fan of medical shows so Good Doctor is out and jtbc has yet to wow me with any of their offerings so I think I'll pass on this one too. Thanks for the post!

WOW.. thanks for the previews Love them all.
I'm looking forward for supernatural drama So Ji Sub staring in.
I still think Who Are You Taecyeon could play her dead bf instead Kim Jae Wook just because I make since since she was 6 years in Come so Taecyeon fit the younger Image better but anyways we never know what will happen.
But Good Doctor looks interesting I've got a feeling Joo Won has this special child character like Tom Hanks ones played. I'm looking forward for Joo/Moon couple they look cute.

Out of these 4 , I will probably only try the first two paranormal ones. The handbag one...most likely not, unless I have time!

:) Thanks for the preview JB! I'm excited for Good Doctor and Master's Sun. I was wondering though if anyone has seen anything new for Two Weeks? I heard it's going to start on the seventh but I'm not sure. Is there also a preview for that? :)

Looking forward to watching the Good Doctor with Joo Won, however, if he appears that way in a hospital, people would mistake him for a patient and not the doctor.
Her Legend looks MEH, but I love handbags...so I'll watch but don't expect much.Maybe I'll be surprised.
Who Are You? ...Will watch because it's Kim Jae Wook's comeback..Too bad he's not the lead.
Master Sun looks campy so I wasn't scared.Reminded me of Disneyland's Haunted Mansion ride with the Adams Family. Should be funny and I love both actors and the Hong sisters.

I'm loving the Hong Sister's Master's Sun... and really avidly avoiding Good Doctor (lame title by the way) I don't think I want to see this... I babysat for two ASD patients during high school and college and I don't want to see any misrepresentation that the drama might veer into. It's not fair to those with ASD since it could just perpetuate the prejudices already present in society.

Please do your research on savant syndrome before judging the drama. It seems like the writer and the actor worked hard to understand this condition.

wow! I have to say, the Master's Sun drama looks SUPER INTERESTING, and plus it's written by the Hong Sisters, so I'm in. And can I just say that I ABSOLUTELY ADORE Gong Hyo Jin's acting in Pasta and Biscuit Teacher Star Candy? <3
Other than that, thought the doctor drama was cool too. I agree, the cinematography is really cool, and plus JOO WON and MOON CHAE WON!!!!!
Add Heirs and I'm booked for my kdrama slots in my life for the next few months. Lol. Can't wait!

Don't really like the way Joo Won portrays his character. And the teaser is bleh. I don't really like how Kdrama portrays medical drama. There hasn't been one that is satisfying and focuses mainly on the medical aspects for me. There's always too much romance/betrayal/revenge/excessive drama that leaves the medical part out. -_-
Master's Sun, on the other hand, is definitely on my watch-list.

dang, the first Who Are You trailer looks gooood, visually and all--the second one seems just a bit gratuitous xDD but I'm not complaining.
aww, Good Doctor looks so well-made, and Joo-won is adorable ;_; that little smile.

this is incredibly shallow but taecyeon falls under the "actors who can't act for shit but are attractive enough to keep me watching" category for me (to my credit though, there are actors like song seung hun and kim hyun joo that i can't watch no matter how goodlooking they are because they are just that bad...) and for some strange reason the the who are you trailers have caught my interest
i love gong hyojin and so ji sub but I have absolutely zero interest in master'sun
