I Hear Your Voice: Episode 14
by girlfriday
You know what’s great about this hero? He swoons more than we do. And you know me—I just can’t get enough of a boy who wears his heart on his sleeve. It’s a sweet, character-building episode this time around, with some time for moral dilemmas to simmer and rise to the surface. It sort of feels like we’re all taking a spin in Hye-sung’s revolving door for an episode, which hey, I never mind as long as Su-ha’s along for the ride.

EPISODE 14: “Having to be silent in memory”
Su-ha tells Hye-sung the truth—that he’s recovered his memories and his abilities, since the day they found out Min Joon-gook was still alive. She takes a step back in horror, thinking: “Then he knows how I feel? He knew all this time and pretended not to?”
He reaches for her hand but she backs away from him and runs into her room. He stands outside just staring at her door, waiting and waiting.
As he looks over at the living room, he flashes back to the first time his uncle came to see the place, wowed by how nice it was. Uncle asks happily if they should all move into this house together, and Little Su-ha happily agrees.
He hears Uncle thinking that between this apartment and his life insurance payout, Dad’s turning out to be a blessing, and Little Su-ha says there’s even more, like his retirement and stuff. Horrified, Uncle asks how he read his thoughts, wondering to himself if Su-ha is a monster.
Little Su-ha swears he isn’t a monster, and reaches out to Uncle, who backs away screaming: “Don’t come any closer!” He runs into the room Hye-sung is in now, and Little Su-ha pounds on the door crying, “I’m not a monster! I’m not a monster!”
Su-ha watches his younger self pounding on that door and sighs as he thinks in voiceover: “I couldn’t hate Uncle. It was undeniable. What a monster I must have seemed, always looking in on his inner thoughts?”
He walks up to the door and raises his fist to knock, but can’t bring himself to do it, and just rests his hand against the door. Inside, Hye-sung is crouched just on the other side of the door, head in her hands.
He leans against the other side and thinks: “Telling the truth is always painful.”
Kwan-woo gets treated at the hospital after his bloody encounter with Min Joon-gook, and has his arm put in a sling. He was knocked unconscious at the end, so he didn’t see where Min Joon-gook ran off to.
He tells the cops that Joon-gook came to find him because he had something to say. Flashback to the fight, where Joon-gook gets the upper hand and gets the chance to speak. He assures Kwan-woo that he won’t kill him: “You were the only person in the world who took my side.”
Kwan-woo says that’s not the case anymore, but Joon-gook doesn’t care. He thought that someone in the world ought to know his story, “because I’m going to see this through to the end.”
Kwan-woo asks what that end is, but Joon-gook says he’s not here for that—he’s here to tell him about the beginning. Kwan-woo tells the cops that it was like a last will and testament, the way he was talking, and he’s pretty sure that seeing it through to the end involves going after Su-ha and Hye-sung.
In the morning, Su-ha makes breakfast and gets a call from Kwan-woo. Hahahaha. He’s saved Kwan-woo’s number as “White Socks.” Hahaha. He doesn’t say much other than to make sure Su-ha will keep Hye-sung safe.
Su-ha finally goes to her door and apologizes: “I won’t ever look at your eyes again, ever. You can just use my eyes in court. And if… you don’t want that either… if you never want to see me again… I’ll do that too. Just let me stay by your side until Min Joon-gook is caught.”
He tells her he’ll wait outside, and then she finally comes out to see the table set with food for her and sighs. On their way out, she stops to ask if that’s it—are there any more lies? Oh noes. He immediately thinks of the big one, about Dad starting this whole chain of events…
He swallows the thought and says there’s nothing else. Ack. I don’t know which is worse. Okay, lying is worse, but I get why he’s treading lightly right now.
She’s silent the rest of the way to work, noting how careful Su-ha is being about not looking her in the eye. He literally stays two steps behind her the whole way, stopping when she stops, always keeping his distance. Could he be any more of a puppy right now?
Thankfully for them, the bus driver is a fan of skinship. When the bus lurches at a stop, he falls onto her lap, and he’s forced to look her in the eye for a split second. Mostly he’s just mortified, and she busts out laughing. Hee.
He stays behind her the rest of the walk to work, and says he’ll come to pick her up at night. She starts to walk away but then whirls around, and he hilariously spins around to face the other way so as not to look at her.
She’s finally had enough of it and stomps over to him and makes him turn around. He does, but stares at the ground, “I didn’t look, really.”
She reaches up and grabs his face in her hands to make him look into her eyes. “I like you, Su-ha-ya. As a dongseng, as a friend, and… as a man.” Eeeeeeeee!
She admits, “Ever since I started to like you, I disliked and feared your ability. I have so many thoughts now that I don’t want uncovered. I feel like every time they’re found out, I’ll resent you. And then when I think about that resentment hurting you, that’s horrible. And beyond that, there are all sorts of reasons why we don’t work, and I think that at some point we have to get over these feelings…”
He starts to protest, but then she adds: “But I still like you anyway. A lot. So let’s not think about the end and spend our days like this. Let’s look at each other and laugh, and say the things we want to say honestly.”
The way his face changes as she says those things, gah. He can barely contain his excitement as he agrees and turns to go. He walks away with this giant shit-eating grin on his face, and then stops.
He whirls around and goes running back… and then he just throws his arms around her waist and picks her up so high until he’s looking up at her. “Thank you. Thank you!”
He leans in to kiss her and then runs away, grinning like a fool. Melty puddle of goo, I am. Hye-sung watches him go with a smile, and then the reasonable side of her brain kicks in: “What the hell did I just do? Is this okay?”
Lawyer Shin meets with Hwang Dal-joong to tell him that they’re looking for his daughter Ga-yeon, to prove that his ex-wife is the death-faking, hand-chopping woman they know her to be, but can’t prove.
He asks Dal-joong what it is that he wants to gain from this trial, which is a good question to ask of a man with a terminal illness, facing an attempted murder charge against a woman he supposedly already murdered. Dal-joong: “An apology.”
Do-yeon pleads with the chief prosecutor to be put back on the case, which he can’t allow but also can’t defend—he’s doing it as a favor to her father, which they both know.
Hye-sung comes by Judge Kim’s lunch table (there’s a funny beat where he’s badmouthing her for causing more trouble with another jury trial and he realizes she’s standing right behind him: “She’s standing right behind me, isn’t she?”) and asks what he’d do if he hypothetically sent a man to jail for murder and then the victim turned up alive.
Judge Kim says he’d overturn the verdict because that’s the right thing to do. She asks if there was a judge who found that out but didn’t, is he breaking any laws? Judge Kim says no—he’s not punishable by law. Damn.
Hye-sung sits outside and goes through this great inner monologue as she thinks over the case. That bastard Judge Seo ruined an innocent man’s life but can’t be held responsible by law. So what can they gain from this trial?
She worries about revealing that Do-yeon is the daughter—won’t it just turn her life upside-down? And then she immediately wonders why she’s worrying about that girl, ha.
Su-ha comes by on his break to walk her back to work, and she remembers to give him back his old cell phone. She just smiles as he leads her away by the hand. That is, until the detectives (on the Min Joon-gook case) show up, and she immediately wriggles her hand out of his grasp.
They tell her about Kwan-woo being attacked by Min Joon-gook last night, and insist on following the two of them wherever they go. Aw man, cockblocking cops around 24/7? Can’t you people come back when the romance is on a downswing?
Kwan-woo is back at work, and Pretty the Paralegal signs his cast: “Hurry up and stick, bones!” He sighs that Kwan-woo isn’t at the age where bones reattach very well either, and Kwan-woo just scowls at the misguided attempt to cheer him up.
He asks about the new public defender in the office, who’s apparently a superstar. They’re calling him Lawyer Eom, so I’m guessing we’re in for a cameo soon?
Hye-sung and Su-ha come by to check on Kwan-woo, but he says with a bright smile that he’s okay, and that Min Joon-gook came by to say something, but there wasn’t time for words with all the fighting going on. But Su-ha hears him thinking: “They probably don’t know anything about Min Joon-gook and Su-ha’s father…”
Hye-sung is so distracted by thoughts of Min Joon-gook that she can barely hear a word Lawyer Shin is saying, and excuses herself for a moment. Pretty the Paralegal is used to this behavior and tells Lawyer Shin to cover his ears.
From the conference room we just hear Hye-sung screaming: “Min Joon-gook! If a cow has a baby it’s a calf, and if a dog has a baby, it’s you! Min Joon-gook, you bastard, I’m not afraid of you anymore!” And then she comes back out with a hair toss, calm as you please, like that didn’t just happen. HA.
She asks Lawyer Shin if they hypothetically knew who the daughter was, but she grew up thinking her adoptive parents were her biological parents—isn’t it wrong to drop this on her? Lawyer Shin doesn’t think so, but Hye-sung points out that he’s only thinking about this from Hwang Dal-joong’s perspective, but what about the daughter? I love that she’s genuinely concerned for Do-yeon right now.
Meanwhile, Do-yeon skips along, having finally convinced her boss to let her back on the case. She heads to the hospital to see the victim, and catches a glimpse of Dad leaving. It’s just from behind though, and she brushes it off like she must be mistaken. He’s just been there to find out that Bio Mom is unconscious and hanging on by a thread, which he totally smiled at, by the way. Creepy.
Su-ha comes by Kwan-woo’s office that evening, and asks what Min Joon-gook said. He hears Kwan-woo wondering how much he knows, so Su-ha tells him that his memory has returned, and he knows about all of it.
Su-ha wonders to himself if he should plead with Kwan-woo not to tell Hye-sung, convinced that he’s going to let the secret out at any moment. But Kwan-woo sits down and tells him not to tell any of this to Hye-sung.
He says that he doesn’t believe Hye-sung would treat him differently if she knew, but he does believe that there are some truths not worth knowing in this world. “The person who started all of this is Min Joon-gook, not your father.”
Aww, Kwan-woo, pullin’ me back in with the sincere good guy underneath it all. Slow clap. I don’t agree that she doesn’t need to know the truth, but your heart’s in the right place. Su-ha gets up to go, and Kwan-woo tells him not to berate himself with useless guilt, and Su-ha brusquely tells him to cut it out because it’s annoying. That kind of kills me—he knows Kwan-woo’s being the bigger man, and that in and of itself drives him crazy.
Kwan-woo gets a call from a Choi sunbae, and asks how Meahri is doing. Hee. I like all the plants for cameos to come.
Su-ha paces up and down the hallway, fuming in frustration. He finally sighs at Kwan-woo’s knack for always turning him into a childish, pathetic fool. He takes out his old cell phone charm and ponders what to do.
Hye-sung and Lawyer Shin go through a speed round of arguments to test out what they can achieve without the daughter’s DNA, and as expected, the win goes to the prosecution. Lawyer Shin is hilariously glad for a moment, until it has to be pointed out that he was role-playing for the other side.
He asks if Hye-sung knows who the daughter is and is holding back out of concern for her, and though she denies it, he offers his opinion that if she’s ever torn about what to do, telling the truth is the best option.
Kwan-woo goes to dinner with his sunbae, who turns out to be Choi Yoon (cameo by Kim Min-jong). Yoonie oppa!
Yoon offers Kwan-woo a job at his firm, promising that there’s lots of pro bono work he can do there, and that it’s better than failing the public defender’s interview. He’s stoically unhelpful when it comes to Kwan-woo and his one-handed attempts to eat slippery sushi, but then when Meahri calls on his way out, he turns into a sweet teddy bear, of course.
At home, Hye-sung goes through another round of Truth or Not, and asks Su-ha what she should do about Do-yeon. She tells him what Lawyer Shin said about picking the truth if she’s undecided, and of course Su-ha is stuck wondering the exact same thing.
He thinks back to Kwan-woo’s words that some truths are better left unspoken, and tells her not to tell Do-yeon. She’s shocked, and points out that Su-ha’s been all about truthiness since Day 1.
There was Sung-bin’s trial, and the twin trial, and he said that the truth was won in court, and called her the worst. “You always told me to tell the truth, and relentlessly at that.” She pauses to add that she really is very understanding person, to have overlooked all that. Heh.
It clearly niggles at him, but he tells her to just bury it if she wants to, and she wonders aloud, “Well if you say it, then it must be the right thing to do.” Aw. But she slams her head back down on the table and sighs that it still feels like she’s wiping her ass with curry paper. Uh, callbacks are one thing, but we’re not actually going to recycle ALL the dialogue to cover our extended asses, are we? Just checking.
Hwang Dal-joong’s condition starts to worsen while in jail, and he begins to write some things down on paper.
Hye-sung runs into Do-yeon at lunch, and is shocked to hear that Do-yeon is back on the Hwang Dal-joong case. She warns Do-yeon to stay away from it, which just raises her ire—everyone from Dad to her boss, and now Hye-sung, all warning her to stay away from Hwang Dal-joong with no explanation. Hye-sung doesn’t tell her anything, and just says she doesn’t want to keep going up against her in court.
Back at the office, Hye-sung wonders why she still hasn’t seen the new public defender, when he finally appears. Eom Ki-joon! He bursts into the office in a flurry of activity and chatter, and he’s kind of like Kwan-woo on speed—all earnest and hardworking, but revved up to impossible levels of enthusiasm.
He seems exactly like Kwan-woo in fact, until he starts handing Pretty the Paralegal all his receipts for his expenses while on the job. Pretty just stares at them, all What am I supposed to do with these?
Lawyer Shin has to explain that they cover their own expenses, and in fact have to pay for the paralegal’s salary out of their own pockets. Eom Ki-joon explodes that he can’t work this way, and Hye-sung points out that he just declared he’d do anything for the people. Eom Ki-joon: “But… my money!” Haha.
And that’s how Cha Kwan-woo, second place interviewer, returns to the public defender’s office. Yay. He dodges another hug from Pretty, but shakes Hye-sung’s hand as she welcomes him back. She can’t resist snarking that he must not have anyplace else to go, which he just lets her believe.
Su-ha arrives at his tutoring academy, and Sung-bin and Choong-ki run up to join him. Is… Choong-ki wearing glasses? He looks at them in confusion, and they say that he doesn’t remember, but they used to give him answers in school all the time. Pffft.
He has to tell them that he recovered his memories, and Choong-ki grumbles that he knew this was a bad idea from the moment she told him to put on the glasses. Ha. Sung-bin says she’s going to join anyway to keep up with him, and Su-ha hears her worrying in her head about how he’ll react.
He tells her to register upstairs, and then hears Choong-ki thinking that she’s at it again, digging her grave. He reads Choong-ki thinking that Su-ha shouldn’t give her false hope, and then adding with scorn that he was nice to the orphan because he felt sorry for him. Ouch. This bromance does so much better when Su-ha can’t read minds.
Hye-sung overhears Judge Kim apologizing to his friend about Kwan-woo turning down the offer to join his firm, and asks him about it over lunch. (She’s really sweet about helping him eat with the one hand.) She says that if he came back because of her…
But he quickly cuts her off to say that he does like her, but he didn’t choose the job because of her. He’s more interested in his dream, not the job specs. She asks if he didn’t even consider the big law firm, and he says no—the decision was easy. “I always decide based on the choice that I think is even one percent more right.”
She wonders if he still doesn’t regret it, but he says that’s why that one percent is so important: “Because if I had chosen the other thing, I’d regret it that one percent more.”
Something clicks for her, and she smiles. She thanks Kwan-woo for everything. As she takes a spin in her revolving door, she thinks to herself: “I’ve always chosen the side that I thought was one percent more right, just like Cha Byun… and I’ve always regretted that choice. I still regret opening that door to the courtroom that day. Because if I hadn’t opened it, none of this tragedy would have begun. But…”
She flashes back to Do-yeon’s drunken confession about how much she regretted that same moment. “It occurs to me now, for the first time ever, that if I had made the opposite choice that day, would I regret it more? Just one percent more?”
She makes a decision and walks ahead. She storms into the office and tells Lawyer Shin that she’s going to face Judge Seo and win this fight, and hilariously asks for a high-five. She tells him not to ask how she found out, and then tells him about the daughter.
As Hye-sung and Su-ha walk home that night hand-in-hand, he spots a car following them and switches around to her other side like a good bodyguard. She says it’s the detectives, and he immediately lets go of her hand.
She fishes his hand back out of his pocket, and he asks if she isn’t concerned about other people. She says she’s decided not to care anymore because that one percent is more right, and doesn’t explain what that means.
So then he just wraps his arm around her and pulls her in close: “What, you said you don’t care.” Kyaaa.
In the morning, Su-ha hears her pep-thinking herself before meeting with Judge Seo, and you have to hand it to her for not being embarrassed that he can hear her think: “I’m perfect.” Lol. He thinks she seems pretty nervous, and suggests a wardrobe change. She takes one look in the mirror and rolls her eyes, “Dammit,” and scurries in to change.
She goes to see Judge Seo and marches right up to him, head held high. She says that she’s discovered some interesting things about Hwang Dal-joong’s case twenty-six years ago. He denies that he did anything wrong, and she says it wasn’t the verdict that was wrong, since the victim orchestrated false evidence.
“But knowing the truth and pretending not to isn’t something I can forgive.” He counters that he hasn’t done a single thing in the courtroom that he’s ashamed of, and she scoffs that he sure is consistent, if nothing else.
She thinks back to what he said to her as a teenager when he was waiting for her to confess to her crime, and repeats the exact same words to him now: “I’m not listening to you because I believe you. I’m waiting, for you to acknowledge your faults, repent, and apologize.” Okay, that was delicious payback.
She tells him that she’ll give him the chance to apologize to Hwang Dal-joong and admit his wrongdoing, and if he doesn’t, she’s going to see this through to the end. He doesn’t budge, which she expected, so she points out that she did give him a chance.
She turns to go and then swings back to add that in case he’s thinking of taking drastic measures, she’s got a police detail on her around the clock, and nods over at the detectives so he can see. Nice.
And then she walks away in a full-on self-congratulatory strut down the sidewalk: “Jang Hye-sung, daebak. Mom, did you see that? Isn’t my charisma the best?” So great.
Su-ha shows up to nag that she came here all alone, and she asks if he read Judge Seo’s mind. He did, and there isn’t going to be an apology. She figured as much, and sighs that Do-yeon is next.
While Hye-sung goes to Do-yeon’s office, Su-ha stands in a public plaza and purposely listens to the chatter for a moment, and zeroes in on two schoolgirls who commiserate about doing badly on a test, each thinking to herself that this might be her chance to score first place.
Su-ha: There are more times when the thing that makes the world and relationships between people more peaceful… is lies rather than truth. Lies can suture discord and calm insecurity for a short time. Truth is more uncomfortable than lies, so most people ignore the truth. I am the same. Telling the truth is often more painful. And so often when faced with truth… I close my eyes.
As he says the last words, he takes out his cell phone charm. It’s a locket, and inside are pictures of his mother.
Hye-sung tells Do-yeon that they’ve found Hwang Dal-joong’s daughter, and that they’re going to run a DNA test to prove that his wife is the same woman who faked her own death. Do-yeon asks why she’s telling her this.
Hye-sung: “Because I need you. You’re Hwang Dal-joong’s daughter, Hwang Ga-yeon. I’m sorry, Do-yeon-ah.”
Su-ha finishes his narration: “But one day, my Jjang D’Arc was—more than me, who sees the truth—chasing the truth.”
COMMENTS
I’ll be honest—the show does feel slower since the extension happened. The thing is, I don’t actually mind the character-building stuff in this show because it’s done so well, and I love these characters, so we could have endless bits of cute character interactions and I’d be happy with that. And the romance of course just makes my day. What does suffer is the pace of the plot, which used to move at breakneck speed. This show was always a step ahead of expectation when it came to reveals, and now it’s starting to draw everything out.
The addition of Su-ha’s backstory with Mom seems to be a step in the right direction, though even with his dad’s secret, it’s already starting to feel more manipulative. By the time he was talking to Kwan-woo about it, I was screaming at them to tell me, and felt like they were milking the secret and holding out on me, which this show is normally so good at NOT doing.
That said, I adore where we’re at with Hye-sung’s character, whose growth is so satisfying to watch, especially because she never loses her charm. Who ever said you had to be modest while becoming a better person? Her confrontation with Judge Seo was so satisfying, but coupled with her concern for Do-yeon, it really felt like she was growing up rather than just standing up for what she thought was right. The one percent idea was a nice way to bring her back around to that initial choice to testify against Min Joon-gook—the choice and the regret that had defined her as a person. When it was just Do-yeon confessing that she regretted her choice, it didn’t sink in, but I love that what Kwan-woo says gives her a new perspective. She always just considered her one-sided regret, and not the fact that the opposite choice wouldn’t have been regret-free. Because there’s no such thing. If regrets are a given, then it’s the choice that feels that tiny one percent more right that has one percent less regret attached.
What’s great about it is that her problem was never not doing the right thing—it was the fact that the ONE TIME she did do the right thing, she spent the rest of her life regretting it. But now that realization makes her a person who seeks out the truth, even when she knows it might hurt. It’s of course in perfect contrast to Su-ha, who sees the truth despite not wanting to, and is now trying his damnedest to hide from it. I don’t want him to keep the truth from Hye-sung much longer, but the shift in their dynamic works on a thematic level, and I like that he’s retreating as she’s becoming braver.
I never get tired of exploring Su-ha’s abilities and how they both show him more of the world (to an intrusive degree) and cut him off from the world (by making him different). Any time we get to be with him as he faces his worst fears—being seen as a freak or a monster by that one person he has left in the world, whether Uncle or Hye-sung—is Such. Great. Stuff. It pangs my heart in such a good way, because the answers aren’t clear and because he’s right to think that fear and horror is the normal response to having your innermost thoughts invaded. It’s true, and perfectly understandable.
But you still just want Hye-sung to say she loves him anyway, because you think that if there’s an ounce of good on this earth, there has to be someone in this world who doesn’t think he’s a monster, and wants to hold his hand in public, and is willing to look him in the eye even if truth is harder to face than lies. And that’s why she wins the bucketfuls of puppy love—because when others ran away, she took his hand.

I cannot say I loved this episode in entirety because I did feel a drag. I suppose the cameos were not just filler, they moved Nerd Lawyer's character along.
I have great love for Hye-sung. She's just so great, stews it over a bit, and then goes to a decision and acts. I really love how this drama does not completely torture the characters or the audience-it does not go in circles like so many dramas do when conflicts arise.
I do however feel the whole conflict over telling Hye-sung what Scary Gortons' Fisherman said IS a little tom much of a manufactured conflict.
Su-ha on how people do not want to hear the truth. He's right. I had a friend tell me that people find me disconcerting because I tell the truth, and most people do not want to hear the truth. I have another friend that says sometimes it is just easier to lie than be honest. I watched her give some guy a whole song and dance to get him to back off of hitting on her instead of just saying, no thanks. I asked her why, and she just said it's much easier to lie. I just do not get it myself.
And the shoulders again. Tank tops every episode. Make it so!

While the kiss was just great, for some reason I really loved the shot of him running with such joy on his face after that kiss. It is shot so beautifully using his charms in every which way. Directors are doing a great job of really taking advantage of LJS smile and movement.

I love love LOVE Hye-sung in this episode. The way she decided to be honest about her feelings for Soo-ha, when I heard the word 'nam-ja' after that teasing 'and...' in the preview, I feel this sense of relief and proud and cannot stop grinning and flailing like an idiot. Her love for him is greater than her fear of his ability and any other things that come between them. And then the sweet kiss, and then the hand-holding, kyaaaaaaaaaa~>__< Everything feels too good to be true in this episode, which makes me slightly worried about the 4 episodes left, like what kind of sh*t storm is awaiting the OTP. Please writer-nim, don't disappoint me!

OMG he is adorable. EKJ was hilarious. "My money" LOL. Oh man that was good. So MJG telling the beginning was obvious but why is the question. What does he gain? Was he trying to see if it would eventually drive a wedge between SH and HS? Or was he simply just trying to explain his motivations to someone?

Thanks for the recap..
Anyway, rather irrelevant topic, anyone knows where to download acoustic version of Every Single Day OST?
I've downloaded all songs and instrumental versions but cannot find the acoustic one. The one that played at the end of episode 12 and when Suha and Hyesung rode subway in ep.8..
Thank in advance!

Would somebody please tell me what the thing is that Judge Kim puts on his nose? It's the second time he's been caught with it in the series. What is it?

Puppy is adorable. And I agree that Hyesung really seemed to mature this episode. With her caring about do-yeon, to her mature confession, and her realization with regrets. I really like that.
Too bad he won't tell her the truth through. I mean, it's probably only part of the story anyway. Who knows. Maybe MJK's wife killed Sooha's uncle first, which made Sooha's father pissed, and kill MJK's wife. There has to be a reason that Sooha's father killed MJK's wife.
I'm still not too sure how I feel about the extension. On one hand, I love the extra fluff, funny, and cuteness that we get. On the other hand, the fast-paced story that drew me in is gone. Usually we go from worrying about one thing to worrying about a completely new thing in one episode, but we've been stuck in the Sooha-tell-the-truth-or-don't-tell for the last two. =/

This episode is so sweet, i didn't expect that HS would confess that quickly. Sign I'm still on cloud 9 after the kiss scene, never have enough of HS and HS, these two are driving me crazy, I have school, work and now all I think is SH, SH, and their lovely moments; sad life of a fangirl I guess.
I think the last two episodes have prepared us for the upcoming storm, next week will be full of drama and angsty

The fact that writer is showing Su-ha's interest in police academy tells me that they want a future for Su-ha. I don't think he is going to die. I am not sure about other characters though. Wouldn't it be great if they make I hear your voice 2 where Su-ha is a detective and still has his mind reading ability? I do like the noona romance but I am very skeptical if it is going to succeed at the end in this series. It feels great right now but .... Dramaland..

One thing I think might have been missed is this: When you are a kid, the adults in your life are your sun to your planet. You basically live off of them. You worship them.
To Su Ha, the world of adults was rough. His own uncle just wanted money from him. The only one he thought didn't have those secondary emotions was Hye Seong who got idealized instead.
However, when he finally met her after all those years, he found out that she also had her own motivations (the diary scene). However, he still had that kid mentality which was pointed out several times that he thought truth triumphed over all and the world of justice was black and white. The Knight rescues the Princess from the tower from the evil King.
Now he's found out that morality is a sea of gray, he's realizing as he's becoming an adult that sometimes lies are functional, but he hasn't found his way back--this is normal. =P It's what we term College-age (New Adult) Fiction.
Part of growing up is realizing that morality isn't always as it seems. It's not clear cut. This is a path that KW and SH share, but KW knows more about it having experienced it, just chooses to think there is a better morality overall. SH, however, is still getting the ropes. So he's learning effectively how to lie. He's doubting himself. He's in effect growing up.
He's also finding out that his Princess in the Tower isn't so trapped as he thought. And the evil king isn't one person, it lives through the choices one makes day to day. And he can't be her Knight in Shining armor because that's not what she wants from him.
In the US, at least it goes:
- Parents are absent. (Middle School)
- Adults are the problem. (YA)
- The world is horribly gray. (New Adult)
- There are mixed moralities everywhere, the difficulty is navigating it on your own. (Adult)
The problem with Su Ha is that he jumped from Middle school thinking to New Adult without the middle. He's going to spin for a while, which will give the rival a new spin at HS. HS, though I think will eventually rescue him from his funk by winning this case, which has mixed morality, giving him part of the answers he needs about the truth of the adult world.
(For those tracking his maturity.) 대본 작가님 really thought through his character arc and what maturity is. Also is trying to offset his arc against KW's own morality arc. (Foil for the jargon term)

I think this drama can handle the 2 episode extension. Even though its slowing in a dramatic sense, its really great at dolling out great character moments, and at having each character influence another in some way. And I actually like how we're having a bit of calm after so much happened for the past few episodes. I kind of like how characters are given a chance to breath and that we're dedicating some time to Do-Yeon and her growing friendship with Hye-Sung. I think it serves a purpose to allow a solid sense of happiness to set in before that happiness is threatened again once and for all and this episode did that well for me.

The thing about this show is that its legal proceedings did not really resemble those practiced in real life and made the lawyers in the show look more like debaters rather than actual lawyers practicing the law. (Oops! I think I am sticking my neck out here...) Interestingly this show's weakness brought out its strength, stirring us to feel for the characters and their view of justice. We see how so called 'justice' is flipped with the change of perspectives.
Hye Sung's view of justice when it comes to Su Ha and MJG. Thus far, in her opinion, MJG is the villain, Su Ha and Park Daddy, the victims. Will that change? Could Park Daddy have committed an unpardonable sin against MJG? And making Hye Sung feel that she has sacrificed too much?
I am with you girlfriday. I feel the writer is milking the situation with the story behind Su Ha's Dad and MJG. I can't decide whether to make a cup of calming tea or pour myself a stiff drink to get me through the last few episodes.

This makes me think of what HS said to SH in episode 6, if SH were to kill MJK he would no longer be the victim but instead be the villain/criminal. So no matter what SH's dad did to MJK, even if he was a victim, it becomes moot when he decided to get revenge by:
1) killing SH's dad
2) attempted murder on a kid...
3) threatening to kill teenage witnesses
4) killed HS's mom
5) killed fruit stand lady
Since HS's view is that once you turn criminal, you are no longer are the victim, but a perpetrator to a crime. I believe that there is no way she would ever view MJK as a victim.

The two leads taking the opportunities the script gives them to naturally give each other priority is 95% of what is a great show.
Wondering how much of this is LBY I ran through My Daughter Seo Young. LBY has moments in Seo Young, mostly with the younger twin brother, and she also plays the lawyer fighting for truth. But for most the show she is a selfish bully working with a cliche rich arrogant lead with no chemistry. So LBY is great when with LJS. Credit to the Voice writer for making the opportunities and credit to LBY and LJS for making the most of the opportunities. If it was easy as it looks it would work in all the shows.
After watchhing Seo Young I suspect the Noona thing works in part because the cultural role of being older ... Liberates? the woman with a chance to be more herself while still in the accepted cultural role of elder/younger.
From Seo Young I also realized those commenters here who say the leads' closeness my not be true romance may have a view more mature than mine. In Seo Young the closeness that comes across is twin brother sister. Not romance or soul mates. In real life easy intimacy is common among family and friends. In Voice the two leads have that intimacy only with each other. There is no other family or friend intimacy so it seems in Voice as if intimacy must mean soulmate when it really doesn't. Maybe setting that up is just good script writing.

I really dun mind e interaction between Kwan woo and sooha,I am quite fond of Yoon sang hyun and if he need some screen time must let him give advice ok? After all sooha needs a male mentor.
As for e kiss,it's great! Something unexpected but totally acceptable coming from a puppy like sooha.
This is one of the most interesting crime drama I have seen which manage to incorporate humor but yet not lose any seriousness in the crime matters.
Coupled with the great chemistry between lee Bo young and lee Jong suk, it's no wonder it is leading in the ratings not only for this period but also for the whole year.i read that the only other drama in the 20s range this year is yawning, lets see if this show becomes the hit of the year!

What can I say... this drama complete my day! SuHa and HyeSung is one of the few really the best OTPs I've seen in in K-dramas. Nothing is forced or looks unnatural. She looks older than him and even she dresses that way while he wears age appropriate and yet, somehow they don't look awkward together... They complete one another and has this silent understanding between them... Also loved how HySung confessed her feelings... I hope and believe in the next episode SuHa will tell her about his dad's connection with Min Jook because he can't really keep the secret from her for long...
The writer is doing an amazing job and I don't actually see the pace of the drama as an adjustment for the intention. I think it was meant to be this way originally because normally in every dramas, things gets revealed in the end and it does take some time unless some dramas rush it off in the last episodes just so to finish the project. It may affect Ep. 15 and 16 with a bit of more background stories on the supporting characters. I really really hope there is more lovelines, skinship and kisses between HyeSung and SuHa in the coming 4 episodes...
Also it will be really nice if the drama ends with a marriage, just because I am old fashioned...

Yes, so far the main characters' charm has been that they don’t beat around the bush and cut straight to the chase.
Usually, in k-dramas, they um and ah, and hem and haw and drag it out, and then the secret ends up getting exposed by someone else. Please don't let that happen here!
Don't suppose there's any way that Hye-sung could get Su-ha's mind-reading powers for a while?

I realized that even if show didn't give us a passionate kiss/makeout scene by the end with hye-sung and su-ha, i would still be wholly satisfied because where they are in the relationship now is so perfect. They are achingly adorable -- hits that sweet spot for me.
Usually I complain about the lack of passion in the kisses in alot of k-dramas -- so inaccurate. Yes, being chaste and innocent is prized once you watch a bunch of american shows nowadays. But it would not hurt to show some tongue, okay?
Anywho, rant over.
I have loads of appreciation for this writer because of how she develops her characters. I actually disliked hye sung right off the bat. Sucky lawyer, meh about lee bo young, cold distance. And now, she's cracking me up with her hair flips, hip sways, high fives, drunken state, etc., and making me satisfied with her honesty and care for others.
And then i realized, i felt the same exact way with hye-mi of dream high. A cold friend who betrays and doesn't give a dam about anyone but herself, ends up getting slapped with reality and ends up shining for all the right reasons. So endearing.
I like this writer and her heroines.

So now I know.
Heroines that start off kick-ass tend to digress into typical weak k-drama heroine mid-show.
Heroines that start off flawed and stand offish end up developing into some of the most capable(not necessarily perfect) people because of the strong growths.
Not always the case, but here it's been proven twice by this writer.

Which is why she's brilliant. I think that's why this show has absorbed so many people, despite some very obvious flaws--it's because the people in it are just as fantastically messed up as any real person you meet in the street, so not only are you engaged with them because you like riding the wave of vicarious emotion, or because you're a sucker for noona-romances, but because you can relate to them as a another living human being.

You know, the more I think about it the more the boys keeping quiet about Su-ha's dad's involvement in this business bugs me. It's not like Hye-Sung hasn't faced hard decisions or confronted difficult evidence before--and I understand them wanting to protect her (she wants to protect them too, of course) but for God's sake, MJG murdered her mother, terrorised herself, she saw him beat to death the father of the man she loves and she's got a demonstrated history of going after the truth above all else. And it's still always been Su-ha above everything else (with truth and justice a close second). Give her some credit!

Firstly. So. Many. Feels! I shall be remembering the first 15 minutes to tide me over whenever serious angsty stuff is going down (which, as so many people before has noted, will happen).
There has been something though which has me curious for sometime ever since we saw the scene by the pool with Soo Ha and MJK. Did Soo Ha's Dad really kill MJK's wife? I mean I think MJK's chosen some pretty interesting words to use when he was telling Soo Ha that basically the reason why he's been on a killing spree was because of his Dad. MJK said: "Your father, with that cunning tongue, killed my wife." What does that mean? With that kind of wording, I'm thinking that there must be a deeper relationship between Soo Ha's Dad, MJK and MJK's wife. Maybe Soo Ha's Dad said something to MJK's wife that caused her to commit suicide? Something of a long stretch maybe, but I want to protect puppy's pure view of Dad :(

I'm frustrated. Last episode I was happy because SH told HS about his memory being back, finally the truth is out and it reliefs SH. It's always a fly in the ointment when there are lies in a relationship, and I want to enjoy their cutes without having worry about the lies.
I understand the fears which keep SH to lie, but if you look into the so called lie, it's not that much of shocking facts. He thinks he know, but what does he know? MJG told him his father was the one to blame, but then we don't know in which way? Or did SH read ALL the truth in MJG's mind already? O.o
I loved the cute in this episode, but it took a whole episode for HS to decide to tell DY, so will it take a whole episode more for SH to finally spill it to HS?? T_T
I agree the show has lost its pace... now it feels a bit like watching a soap opera where you have to wait and wait for something to happen and they use flashbacks half of the episode, just to make you wait even longer...

First of all, thank you for the great recap, I love the analogue of us taking a spin in Hye Sung's revolving door. It truly is an apt description of this episode.
Secondly, the more I watch this drama the more I find myself looking at Hye Sung and wondering if the writer has ever met me. I find that I can relate to her character so well. Especially in the scenes where she excuses herself from the serious lawyering (my own word) discussion to deal with her irritation at Min Joon Gook. When I saw her go into a room alone and yell out loud like that I immediately thought, wait "I DO THAT!!!" Well, not in the office in front of people, but I make my way to a quiet corner and let out the frustration. I find those little beats really humanise the character.
I also enjoy the fact that she is not fighting her feelings for Soo Ha at this point, but I can only surmise that it means things will start to go downhill eventually. In the world of Kdrama, if anything is going to well, they always throw in those annoying little twists, all in the name of dramatic angst. Until that comes, I will appreciate the happy.
The happy leads me to Soo Ha. He literally lights up the screen with the amount of energy he transmits now that they are no secrets (correction almost no secrets) between them. I have to give credit where credit is due and Lee Jong Suk's acting in this drama is spectacular. Lee Bo Young is pretty good as well.
As we head into the final four episodes, I just keep hoping that the writer doesn't do anything to throw this drama off kilter and drive me batty. Sitting with fingers crossed until next week...

I really hope Su Ha gets Hye Song in the end because as much as I love him to bits and want him all to myself, i think Hye Song deserves him because she's the only one who could possibly live with him.
As a character, she's one of the most forthright, un-self-conscious people in the show, and what comes out of her mouth is usually a reflection of what's going on in her head. For a telepath like Su Ha, this is probably a godsend.
Me? I squeal over his every move on screen, but in reality someone like Su Ha would drive me batty within minutes. And i think it might be true of a lot of people as well. If you think about it, we all go around making a hundred tiny exaggerations and omissions and suppressions every day-- not out of malice, but because we want to keep the peace or we want people like us.
The reason why Hye Song is perfect for Su Ha is because she's so frank that, aside from her initial denial of her feelings, she doesn't mind him seeing into her deepest, darkest thoughts, 24/7. She doesn't mind that he sees her self-aggrandizing moments or her utter humiliation.
So Su Ha, love on! She's the only one for you, and i really hope she loves you back as much as you love her.

This episode was definitely a bit slower but I really appreciated seeing JHS come around to telling the truth to Do Hyeon.
Also, I want more skinship, because...of course. I would sanction a 10 episode extension if it was 8 episodes of boring day-to-day skinship/breakfast making/laughing/handholding/handsy fake fighting/bus stop waiting and just 2 of actual plot. Cannot get enough of happy Soo Ha face.
Please let that cute movie watching scene from the CF make it into the drama.
Also, please let there be a shot of Soo Ha graduating from police academy IN UNIFORM (be still my noona heart).
I am a bit worried about where we are going with the Mommy and Daddy park story. But WHY would we trust that slime MJG? I mean. Just because HE said Daddy Park did something - is it true? He's a crazy person who lies and manipulates people. I think Daddy Park is probably innocent and MJG is just using him as a scapegoat for his wife RIGHTLY leaving him.

One thing I am sure after I watched this is that Su Ha's character is definitely, once again, definitely, based on puppy.
Royal, sweet, cute, strong, well you know, those things are in puppy!! Even the look he has on his face.
Okay. I'm completely sure.
The slow pace is of course inevitable, but one thing that this show has been doing right since the beginning until now is that this drama has the best characters.
How they make story for each character, even for the Judge or The Pretty, or Choong Ki or Sung Bin, you won't feel annoyed or burden or less entertained even if we only see them in petty scene even if it slows the pace. You actually want to see them more. You love to see them.
And one of the best scene in this drama (most of us agree the romance is the best) is when Hye Sung spoke to her mom saying she did great. It looked petty, but for me, it's one of the little details that I love from this drama. That moment, I couldn't help but to miss her and feel this skip a beat heartache, I couldn't help but to wish the best mom is still here.
And even though of course the extension mess the plot, but I think the slow pot has cause no harm, (at least not yet) and in fact, I think it shows it perks today.
From the little thing (I love how this drama show us the little detail that somehow looks petty but actually effect each other character) we see one new moment of Lawyer Cha and Hye Sung.
I never ship them, and it actually kinda worries me because in this episode, he effects Hye Sung more than Su Ha while usually Su Ha is the one who effects her. And this also show that Lawyer Cha is clearly a bigger man thatn Su Ha and Su Ha still has long way to go.
And really, we still have 4 episodes and now the OTP has been together. Warning. Definitely a warning. Whether there will be more huge twist (not the otp, please, not the otp) or they will just face some problems.
This drama has been doing so good and I would only wish for a warm end. I won't judge this drama because of the extension or any upcoming stupid plot (if there is). I'll enjoy the show and value each second of the characters because they are really priceless and I really love the warm feeling every time I watched them.

Yes, usually Su Ha is the one who gives Hye Sung that slight push towards the right direction. This time it was Cha xD, but you shouldnt worry just cause of that! Have a little more faith in our otp ;p
Hye Sung herself noted that he wasnt quite being himself this episode. The guys got a lot of things on his mind-them finally getting together, his daddy (& now mommy aswell?) troubles... Im sure it'll work out over the next episodes.

Oh and about the romance. The kiss was a the perfect choice. Instead of giving some awkward kiss or passionate (which will make some the audience feel awkward) they go for the cute one. Safe choice, best choice.
And if you haven't noticed, Su Ha loves waist. Aquarium kiss, back hug, this time kiss, his hand will circle on her. Yup. Love it.
And that foolish lovesick puppy kiss. I.. have.. no.. words..

See, that type of body language with skinship tells alot about him. Some actors usually hug around the shoulders, or kiss with their hands on the head, neck. LJS goes right for the waist, pulling her body close to his. It's also in the hands of the director, so perhaps this director is pretty awesome, too?
Lee jong suk is known to be very affectionate in real life with lots of aegyo. Him and Joo Won are alike in that way; they're known for the skinship and cute.
Lee Jong Suk says he likes to hold hands with alot of people he feels comfortable with, which is why some might mistake him as a flirt. (got that from an article) And while i watched some BTS in Gaksital with joo won, he's holding hands while swinging with the actress that played mok dan.

Yup. They delivered the moment sweetly through the little detail which in most of the drama forget/failed to deliver.
They made it so natural yet affectionate.

There's something about the HS/SH interactions now that are not really hitting the right button for me in this episode. I like the couple and are rooting for them, and i loved the bit when HS didn't know that SH got his memory back but somehow the age difference and her maturity over his showed quite a bit in this one.
And the cameos were obviously required for the extension and it felt like it was just dropped in for the minutes.
I think maybe I need some more skinship.

I will be hugely irritated if the writer backs down on a Hye-sung & Su-ha relationship due to age difference. Other recent shows have young ladies around Su-ha's age get together with men who are far older than Hye-sung, so why should there be a double standard?

I KNOW. I CAN'T BEAR THEM TO SEE THEM SEPARATED.
I think the writer is smart enough to know what we want though ;)...*fingers crossed*

I agree with some of the comments made on the slower pace of this week's episode (but don't get me wrong, I still LOOOOVED IT :D) because I noticed myself wanting to fast foward some scenes. I really hope the writer doesn't drag out SH's dad's secret and Do Yeon's past and just wraps up those issues during nxt week's eps becuz I want us to move onto a new plot hehe:)
There better be more skinship/interactions between SH and HS. They are such a heart skipper moments. The ones I replayed the most was when HS slid her fingers into SH's hands OMG :')

What would be the age difference between Suha and Hyesung? Anyways they are super cute together!!! <3 So happy she finally told him her feelings instead of him just knowing her thoughts :)

I'm not 100% sure but we do know that SH is 20 right now. And since Do Yeon's issue thing started 26 years ago and the fact that Do Yeon is the same age as HS makes HS 26 as well. So I'm assuming they are 6 years apart in the drama.
either 6 years or 10 years...they match each other in every way possible <3

it should be 8 years difference.
soo ha was 8 and hye sung was 16 when they first met.

koreans add 1 year to their actual age, if i'm not mistaken, for before birth (during pregnancy).
so soo ha was 8+1 and hye sung 16+1 when they first met.

I agree with the math on the 6 year difference.
If Soo Ha is 20 now (as she told him post-amnesia year when he asked her how old he was and he said "oh, I'm younger than I thought") and the original issues happened 11 years ago (10 years to him finding her again +1 year of his being lost and amnesia-ed) then he was 9 when the original trial happened.
HS and DY are 26 now, making them 15 when the original issues happened..no? I don't think we can apply the Korean +1 changes here since we are already going off of how the characters age themselves.

The character chart shows that su-ha started off as a 19 year old while hye sung was 27.
A year passed, which would put him at 20, while she is now 28.
In real life, however, the two are 10 years apart. Him 24 and her 34.

Based on HS' resume when she applied as public defender, she was born on November 15, 1985 so she's 28 years old right now. Since Soo Ha is 28 years old, they are 8 years apart.

I KNOW RIGHT!??!? SO PROUD OF HER! I didn't expect her to give in that fast haha. But so glad she acknowledged her feelings :)))))
Now, we just need her to grab his face first (instead of him making the first move) and plant a delicious kiss...
