Seo In-gook joins Hong sisters’ horror rom-com drama
by javabeans
Seo In-gook (Answer Me, 1997) is heading back to television as the latest addition to the Hong sisters’ upcoming rom-com-horror drama Master’s Sun. Hm, he isn’t someone I would’ve guessed to play second lead to Gong Hyo-jin (Best Love) and So Ji-sub (Ghost), but his star is on the rise so good for him for nabbing a high-profile project. (Seo’s last drama was kind of a flop—weekend series Rascal Sons—but overall he’s had a breakout year as a rookie idol-turned-actor.)
The plot of the drama centers around a “gloomy” secretary heroine who suddenly gains the ability to see ghosts, and the ambitious pain-in-the-butt hero who is the president of the company she works for. We’ve seen these elements in rom-coms before, but I’m hoping that this show will have a fresh take and manage to wring something new and interesting out of it. If anything I’m very eager to see So Ji-sub in comedy and ditching his heavy image, while Gong Hyo-jin is wonderful in everything.
Seo In-gook comes into play as an employee of our hero’s “shopping mall kingdom”; he’s also a former soldier, having served in the Zaytun Division of the South Korean Army, which was deployed to Iraq in the mid-2000s. That’s oddly specific. Following the character’s discharge from service, he chooses to use that experience and skill set in pursuing a job in the private sector, thus leading him to take a job as the security head of So Ji-sub’s company.
The drama, which is directed by City Hunter and Prosecutor Princess PD Jin Hyuk, will premiere in August on SBS.

One thing people don't get about the Hong Sisters is that they spend their dramas exploring various themes and in order to realize the theme, they will bend the plot and characters to it.
The other thing is that though, they do heart pounding, there are often little layers they put in that you don't realize until later or until you are sharp enough to catch it.
And finally, I *love* that they never play it safe with their writing and always, always experiment. I rather have that than bore doctor.
The thing with Big was that people didn't catch the first and the third thing about them, thus the second part about them got lost. Because people don't expect KES layers, but the Hong Sisters do pull it--you just have to be sharp enough to catch it between the laughs.
I expect for this drama, their handling of subtle will have gone up as they've practiced it a little. (Which means we'd have to pay attention more as you did in Big--people disliked the tone shift, but if you went with it, it worked.) and their characterization should have gotten a boost, since they were trying to isolate that.
I'm looking forward to seeing what theme they will try to explore this time, though. Usually they choose a theme that's related to the previous dramas that they didn't previously get to explore. I'm expecting this one to have an unresolved theme from My Girlfriend is a Gumiho...

Oh and I like this addition of casting, too. I'm looking forward to this drama.
Look forward to a little more subtle with the character he'll be playing...

Hmm the Hong sisters like to recruit rising (?) stars as their second leads. Suzy for Big, Yoo Inna for Greatest Love (I think she'd had some exposure before Greatest Love)

Hmmm....Seo In Gook alongside So Ji Sub and Gong Hyo Jin? It doesn't click for me. I rather much prefer someone older, maybe the same age as So Ji Sub or Gong Hyo Jin.

As some people were suggesting up above you, Seo In-guk MIGHT be THE ghost, since they find some analogy with Bruce Willis's character in "Sixth Sense" being also a former soldier.

Can't get enough of him onscreen. I demand him on big and small screens alike. I'm sure he'll take part in its OST at some point. When he sings, he gives me feels.
Can we skip July and catapult to August already? XD
