Dramabeans Podcast #16

It’s a jam-packed podcast this time around, as we whiz through a full slate of dramas past and present. Let’s dive right in.

Podcast #16

Running time: 69:19

In which we:

  • Discuss Gu Family Book and Suzy as a leading lady, with comparisons to Jeon Woo-chi;
  • talk about You’re the Best, Lee Soon-shin’s narrative flaws, family drama pacing and Ojakkyo Brothers, and why this is better enjoyed as a fast-forward drama (10:55);
  • briefly cover Nine and why it was enjoyable but not addicting (17:24);
  • discuss That Winter, The Wind Blows in a nutshell and why it didn’t float our boats (19:10);
  • move on to Mandate of Heaven, the reason the side characters trump the main romance, and how it exceeded initial expectations (20:31);
  • give our first impressions of Jang Ok-jung (26:00);
  • move to currently airing shows like I Hear Your Voice with a brief sidebar on Heartless City, the acting of its leads Lee Bo-young and Lee Jong-seok, and why it seems like a promising new selection (29:50);
  • touch upon Dating Agency Cyrano and its fun, brisk rom-com vibe (36:44);
  • cover Shark, Kim Nam-gil, and his pornstache of shame (39:38);
  • talk about Monstar, its refreshing vibe and quirky heroine, and its thoughtful incorporation of musical numbers (45:36);
  • lament the downward trajectory of 1 Night 2 Days and wonder at which point one gives up on a show (51:44);
  • mention broadcaster trends and the directionlessness of Barefoot Friends (1:02:05);
  • and wrap up with thoughts about our recent(ish) Dramabeans Meetup (1:03:22).

Another fun podcast! Thanks JB and GF.

Only comment on shows I've seen:

-Nine - I didn't enjoy as much, mainly because the female lead drove me crazy. I didn't find the romance appealing either. It had a great concept, but the show was too long. 12 eps would be perfect!

-That Winter - I bailed after 8 eps. The cinematography was too in your face. I got tired of it after a while.

-Jang Ok-jung - Bailed after 8eps. Couldn't stand the makjang elements.

-I Hear Your Voice is cute, but I'm not really connecting with it at an emotional level.

-Heartless City - LOVE, but its problem for me is the mechanics of the show. Everyone is connected; selective use of surveillance, ect...

-Cyrano - I like the leads, but it lacks something and I don't know what that something is?

-Queen's of Classroom - have you seen this one yet? My favorite show this season! Well acted. Relevant and relate-able story. Full of heart.

GFB: since it will be ending soon, I'll keep watching it. We still have leading man actor to cover up Suzy's acting. It's quite good enough to see suzy. Despite being so emotionless, in fact she is really cute, but she seems had put a hard effort working for this drama.

MOH: I like this story, more like it bcause ji hyo act maturely.

YTBLSS: may be bcause it's a long episode of drama, the
plot took very slowly. But it's nice story.
I don't know about the other drama since I'm really follow it. So I'll be just a silent reader. Nive post DB!

Hmmm... I am curious on how you sound and listening to you girls is the best decision I have made so far. ^^ I imagined "ahjumma" voice but then, California Valley Girl started pouring out when you greeted. I LOVE IT!

About GFB: Do people realize how drama filming in Korea works? They purposely film episodes "live" so that they can change their storyline according the viewers' preferences. It sucks for both quality of acting/cinematography as well as the staff/actors health, but what can you do.

I honestly think Suzy's acting is fine. I've certainly seen a lot worse when it comes to over-the-top k-drama actresses. She's actually pretty good in GFB and she really did become her character in Intro to Architecture. People judge her so much when she's only had a handful of roles.

Agree so much on 1N2D - it used to be my favorite variety show, but I haven't watched it in a while because it's so boring to me now. I was also really rooting for Barefoot Friends since I love Kang Ho Dong ahjusshi, but it's another show I can't watch anymore.

I still think that Jang Ok Jung's first 10 episodes is on par with Tree With Deep Roots in terms of witty dialogues and excellent pacing. I especially loved the Joseon Fashion Show. However, the remaining episodes after that is just makjang. But JOJ is still better than the mediocre Gu Family Book.

My comment on the shows I have seen so far :

1. Nine – I like the concept but there's no big appeal in this show that make me want to watch more, and the female lead is so annoying. I think 20 episodes are too long, 11 episodes could've been perfect like japanese drama.
2. That Winter – I liked the episode from 1-13, after that I got bored specially when Song Hye Kyo's character kept saying that she wanted to die.
3. Jang Ok-jung – Nothing special on the story. Kim Tae Hee is totally miscast, she has no chemistry with Yoo Ah In, her acting was forgettable. It would've been better if Hong Soo Hyun takes the lead female.
4. Gu Family Book – Yup the gorgeous scenes were only in early episodes. I only interested in Papa Gu’s story, and the side character like Chang Jo. I’m tired watching after ep.20…
5. I Hear Your Voice – It started good and looked interesting from 1-8 episode, but later I think the show turned into noona-dongsaeng cheap romance that I don’t get the chemistry at all. No surprise and get so boring.
6. Heartless City – this is my most favorite drama in 2013, and I think the best so far. I like the plot and twist in each episode, I like the lead character so much (the lead actor is really good), the directing & cinematography is just as great as the story. This is the show that keep me interested until the final episode. I heard they’re going to create this to the big screen, I certainly can’t wait to watch it.
