So Ji-sub and Gong Hyo-jin courted for new Hong Sisters drama
by girlfriday
A new year means there’s a new Hong Sisters drama on the way, and this time they’re heading to SBS in the summer. Some of us are still scarred from Big, while others of us may choose to remember their last drama as Best Love, but never fear, because there’s a brand new drama ahead to wash all those memories away. In the first round of casting rumors for the leads, we have broodmeister So Ji-sub (Ghost) and Hong Sisters alum Gong Hyo-jin (Best Love). Is there an option to vote for one and not the other? Whadduya mean it’s not up to me?
The drama, called Master’s Sun, is about a woman who can see ghosts and the man who protects her. Huh. Like a bodyguard? Or a supernatural knight? Or just a really overprotective boyfriend? ‘Cause I gotta tell ya, the latter is not that interesting. There’s no info yet on whether it’s a modern drama or a sageuk, but of course with the Hong Sisters it’ll be a rom-com of some sort.
Directing is PD Jin Hyuk, of City Hunter and Brilliant Legacy. Damnit, you’re reeling me in. The thing is, with this director and enough great dramas in the past, I’ll surely give the Hong Sisters a clean slate and a shot at winning me over again. But I swear, if they phone it in like they did for Big, I’m breaking up with them.
I always love Gong Hyo-jin but she’s already played one of the Hong Sisters’ better heroines in a really great team-up with Cha Seung-won… which is kind of why it’s hard to imagine anything topping that. But she’s fantastic in rom-coms and her starring would mean that I’m guaranteed to watch. So Ji-sub isn’t really the go-to guy for comedies, but I wonder if I’ll like him more if he takes on this project. It might go a long way in making him seems less self-serious. A guy who’s willing to be a total fool for comedy can’t be ALL bad, right?
Master’s Sun is planning for a July premiere on SBS.

I consider Big too big a disaster to be only the result of the writers... Pure comedy is what the HS do the best and nothing like an actor who has the image of a stick in the *** but can make fun of himself. I also adore GHJ so I'm in.

Should I be excited or not? Well, out of all the Hong Sisters' dramas, I only missed out on Hong Gil Dong & Big. I'm all for a serious actor turning goofy (Cha Seung-won as Dokko Jin!), but how I wished my Lee Min-ho picked a Hong Sisters' drama instead. SG is the only drama I watched from that writer and mostly because of Hyun Bin. And the Oska character. And the OST. ;) Gong Hyo-jin? If it's better than Best Love, hope she's on it. If not, then...

I've only liked So Ji Sup in the drama Sorry I Love You. After that all his other dramas were too melo for me. Not that this wasn't T_T but maybe I had a change in taste and started liking more upbeat dramas like Answer 1997 =D

It's not a problem age wise for me (since we tend to whinge about noona pairings on this site but never the opposite) but I guess the OP might be implying that they don't look very good together to her. That was my first impression as well to be quite honest.

You got me here, I also have the same feeling.
But don't get me wrong about GHJ, I actually like her as she is one of those actresses I admire the most.
But her partnering with SJS, felt that it's a little miss match.
This is just my first impression, I maybe wrong.
I think it will be good if the like's of Park Jin Hee, Son Hye Jin or Eun Hye will be paired to him in a romcom as this actresses are on my list when it comes to this genre.
But PJH is out because she will still be in Heo Jun for about the end of August.
I want to see SJS and PJH together as they're pairing will look and sound great.

I will forgive Hong Sisters if they improve their writing and not to screw up this drama. So Ji Sub I love him in Ghost. Therefore, it will be interesting if he take this drama. Please be good drama...

You know what I think would work? Bring Uhm Ki Joon in as one of the ghosts. Heck, dress him up as the Phantom. So Ji Sub would be like, I thought I kicked your ass last summer... It'd be great if they aired in April. Too bad, July. Hmm.

I have gotten quite a BIG scar that I'm not getting giddy over the news. So Ji Sub is just meh (for me, coz i'm into pretty boys more than brooding serious ahjusshi althougH jANG hYUK is my only exception). Gong Hyo Jin had already played the perfect character in Best Love, so, can i see someone else? (but if they're courting choi kang hee in her stead; i'd be begging her to stay)

I liked Big, I didn't say it was perfect, but I really did like it. =P One of the few that actually liked the ending and got it. XD
Plus, I liked that they were trying to fix the one thing that DBs often complains about.... so that means this next drama is going to be AWESOME and a bit unpredictable as they bring what they learned last time into this one. (i.e. A subtle hand on some aspects).
I like writers who take risks. (Otherwise you get the travesty that was called
BoarHorse Doctor.) If the Hong Sisters stop experimenting, I'll stop watching.Still, I wish for the amusement ride effect they like to pull that makes their drama crack.
Ah, I foresee the end of a long winter dry spell after the end of King of Dramas. No wonder the starting point of dramas has been mediocre.
Drama God, don't say stop, say go! Win that bet.

BIG was one of the worst dramas I've watched, and I've watched tonnes. Every time it's mentioned I wish I can get my 16 hours back.
Not keen on GHJ... there's no one else available??

1. big was a huge, gigantic, colossal failure. from any other writer one might be able to forgive and forget... but from the writers who gave us chunhyang, my girl, fantasy couple, it's just baffling, and astounding. okay, i can forgive. but i don't think i'd be able to forget anytime soon.
2. so ji-sub in a rom-com? yes please!! i feel like i've only ever seen him in heavy dark stuff and would be THRILLED to see him in something cute and fluffy (hopefully). i'm not a particular fan of him, but it would be interesting to see him in something light for a change.

Is this good news or a prelude to a massive disappointment?
I tend to love Hong Sisters' work, I dropped BIG right away so I avoided a trauma and I am kind of optimistic in the writing department.
GHJ is great at comedy and given a well writen role *fingers crossed* she can do a brilliant job. I take her without much ado.
Now, SJS. Our epitome of a brooding, troubled character in a comedy? On the one hand I wouldn't get my expectations too high. On the other hand, maybe it wasn't lack of acting range (or not only lack of range) but also typecasting that makes us see him brooding and suffering as a default? Maybe he has been hiding the dork inside him because his melo roles are more lucrative? I would like SJS to let go of his smoldering image and show himself from a different side. In case he doesn't, it may turn out something of A Thousand Years of Love WTFery (I think any Dr Jin comparisons would be valid too). A different kind of funny ;)

OMGOMGOMGOMG. I am so psyched for this! I was as disappointed with Big as everyone else, but I know we can always count on the Hong Sisters for a good dose of comedy and romance and that is absolutely my favorite thing in kdrama. Also Gong Hyo Jin is absolutely amazing and I happen to love So Ji Sub as well after seeing I'm Sorry I Love You. He's obviously a very serious actor, but I think that's why it would be great to see him being a full on goof ball. Greatest Love managed to convert Cha Seung Won and I think Dok Go Jin is one of the funniest characters out there. Maybe SJS will be able to supply some hardy comedy as well?

I don't think it's dislike. He just lacks expression, lol. He is very same ole, same ole in which I mean that he is stern and serious all the time and not much else. Stiff, I think would be the word, lol.

So Ji Sub has a dorky side or maybe he's just awkward. I like his off screen persona more than when he's onscreen.
Remember when he just said,'' Thank you...'' for his acceptance speech at the award show? lol Ok....He wasnt trying to be funny but still I had a good laugh.

I'm not really a big fan of The Hong Sisters. I tried watching Best Love but got bored after the first episode. I didn't even bothered watching Big, because the reviews were so awful. This one does sound interesting but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Can this guy even smile?? I'm serious all dramas I've seen him in, he looks so serious... and sad.. that I can't be fully excited about this. I usually fall in love with male leads of Hong sisters' dramas, but.. idk. And this is the first time they're casting one actress twice, I'm surprised..

"Can this guy even smile?? I’m serious all dramas I’ve seen him in, he looks so serious… and sad.."---> I wonder if they'll make fun of his serious expression. Sort of like how Cha Seung-won's facial hair got made into a joke in Best Love.

I saw him smile in his early dramas and it doesn't fit him. He's a brooder. Brooders don't smile. They just um, brood.
