So Ji-sub and Gong Hyo-jin courted for new Hong Sisters drama
by girlfriday
A new year means there’s a new Hong Sisters drama on the way, and this time they’re heading to SBS in the summer. Some of us are still scarred from Big, while others of us may choose to remember their last drama as Best Love, but never fear, because there’s a brand new drama ahead to wash all those memories away. In the first round of casting rumors for the leads, we have broodmeister So Ji-sub (Ghost) and Hong Sisters alum Gong Hyo-jin (Best Love). Is there an option to vote for one and not the other? Whadduya mean it’s not up to me?
The drama, called Master’s Sun, is about a woman who can see ghosts and the man who protects her. Huh. Like a bodyguard? Or a supernatural knight? Or just a really overprotective boyfriend? ‘Cause I gotta tell ya, the latter is not that interesting. There’s no info yet on whether it’s a modern drama or a sageuk, but of course with the Hong Sisters it’ll be a rom-com of some sort.
Directing is PD Jin Hyuk, of City Hunter and Brilliant Legacy. Damnit, you’re reeling me in. The thing is, with this director and enough great dramas in the past, I’ll surely give the Hong Sisters a clean slate and a shot at winning me over again. But I swear, if they phone it in like they did for Big, I’m breaking up with them.
I always love Gong Hyo-jin but she’s already played one of the Hong Sisters’ better heroines in a really great team-up with Cha Seung-won… which is kind of why it’s hard to imagine anything topping that. But she’s fantastic in rom-coms and her starring would mean that I’m guaranteed to watch. So Ji-sub isn’t really the go-to guy for comedies, but I wonder if I’ll like him more if he takes on this project. It might go a long way in making him seems less self-serious. A guy who’s willing to be a total fool for comedy can’t be ALL bad, right?
Master’s Sun is planning for a July premiere on SBS.

I am all for a teaming of So ji sub and Gong hyo jin.
But I thought she was considering some court Drama. Is that history?! Was anticipating that very much but there wasn't any news lately so I guess it won't happen.
Oh well I just want Gong Hyo jin in another 16-20 Ep. Drama. She is my favourite actress and one of the best.

I'd like it to be good, too; I'm probably the only person in the world to have never made it all the way through a Hong sisters drama. I have a hard time seeing So Ji Sub doing slapstick or the sort of broad comedy they do best, and I think Gong Hyo Jin is a pretty limited actress, but I'll give it another try. Please be good, so maybe I can figure out what is so addicting about the rest of the Hong sisters' dramas.

I always credited Gong Hyo Jin for being one of the most naturally emotive actresses! Let's Go to School Sang Doo and Thank You really nailed that impression in.

Before Big I would have been 100% thrilled with this news. Now I'm only 98% thrilled. Everyone deserves a mistake and I'm more then willing to give the sisters another chance. I love Gong Hyo Jin in anything, but I've never watched So Ji Sub before. This type of drama seems like it would be a real change for him which could be a good thing. Badass Cha Sueng Won was awesome in his comedic turn, so maybe So Ji Sub would be too. Plus with the PD, this drama seems to have a lot going for it. I wish the plot was explained further, but there's still time for that. I'm cautiously excited for this.

Being 98% thrilled, you are still very kind and very forgiving. I am more like 2% thrilled (or less) wih these writers in the mix. If they did not before, don't the sister-duo now know from Kim Soo Hyun (and her recent blockbuster hit "Childless Comfort") what makes a TV drama work on the basic level? Clue: it starts with writing.

I am still pretty excited because, other then Big, the Hong sisters have penned some of my favorite dramas. I have high hopes that Big was just a one off and they'll be back in fine form for the next.

I'm all for another Gong Hyo Jin - Hong sisters collab despite the mess that was Big but seriously I'm still pretty on the fence about So Ji Sub hmm... I mean, guy does broody guy roles well but rom-com? MIND CANNOT COMPUTE.
It may sound odd for now but who knows,we might have a new potential King of romcoms in making lololol just saying.
If I have to be painfully honest then I'd say that I am pretty skeptical about the pairing. Unexpected, perhaps but not entirely impossible. So Ji Sub didn't do much in his last project Ghost (a.k.a Phantom) thought,I mean his expressions was the same pretty much 90% throughout the show lol so I'm pretty worried la. I loved his performance in I'm Sorry,I Love You with Im Soo Jung! That is the only revenge melodrama that has ever made me cry, like genuinely shed tears without feeling that the plot twist was fabricated for the sake of tears. In short,my curiousity is decently piqued! :3

Maybe So Ji Sub will make a good straight man. I remember in Thank You when Jang Hyuk was in some very cute scenes. Even though he is a very serious actor, the situational humor and the collaboration of the other actors made those light moments work.
Sometimes, the best comic actors are the ones who are able to play their roles with seriousness. Maybe So Ji Sub will rise to the occassion. I am more concerned about the Hang sisters. Even when they write a strong rom-com, I always feel disappointed with the resolutions at the end.

I also don't like how their wrap-ups. I tend to walk away disappointed, not the endings ruin the whole show, but just not satisfied.

I'm also wishing all the best for So Ji Sub. And really wish that this drama will show another side of him that will make us see him in a new light. It's all in the story (writing).
Talking about writing, despite not hating Big as most people do, it does have the most illogical delivery/story ever written in kdrama history.
It makes me feel really stupid. Or should I say it makes me think that the writers are stupid. I don't understand why did the Hong sisters make that kind of mistake. People make mistake. But not that big. And they're Hong sisters not some new writers learning how to write a story.
However, since they're Hong sisters I'm more than willing to give them a trust not to repeat that stupid mistake once again.

He's ok when he's a poor guy with complicated life, he's good when he does nothing, but I didn't really enjoy him playing a smart guy in Ghost. Smart doesn't suit him IMO, but I still have a soft spot for him :)

Ooh the basic premise sounds like the 2011 film Chilling Romance. And just for that I'm already feeling giddy about it. And plus, I think I've already forgiven the Hong Sisters for the travesty that was Big so BRING IT ON! :D
I personally wish they turn back to the wacky comedy that they brought before though. I mean sure I can sense their desire of branching out of their safety net but as for me I just really want to watch a drama/romcom with heart that is not pretending to be more complex than it needs to be. ;~;

I love Chilling Romance too but I think I would love this drama more if So Ji Sub has supernatural power.
Can't we have a modern day romcom with supernatural power in play? It's a ghost story anyway a hero with a supernatural power or two won't hurt.

I have not seen So Ji-sub in a comedic role since his early days in Love Story Ep 6: "Miss Hip-hop & Mr. Rock" in 2000! He was pretty funny as the second lead. I'd love to see him in a TV comic role!

please be good, please be good, please be good. The Hong sisters have done of of my favorite kdramas and I am still sad over the fact that I dropped Big, because I never thought that I would stop watching a Hong sister drama T_T.
Lets just hope that they learned from the mistake that was Big and come back stronger. I want them to do well. I have never seen So Ji Sub in anything, everything he does seems way too angsty for me, but this sounds interesting. I also loved Chilling Romance so the plot sounds fun to me, as of now.

OMG !!!!!!! Interesting pairing. I've always thought So Ji Sub should be in a Writer Kim's drama. This is much better actually. Hong Sisters drama would suit him better.
Of course my eternal love to Gong Hyo Jin unnie. ^^
I have soft spot for Hong sisters but I hope they not going to try to be overly ambitious with the plot. I'm worried but allowing myself to be excited.

Whaaa? Read they might be starring together, but didn't know it was a Hong sisters drama. I rather like that their dramas feature actors who've never been leads in their dramas before. I'm on the meh train about this one. I have NOT recovered from the Big disaster, especially because I wasn't the greatest fan of Best Love. Guess we'll see with this one. Their supernatural dramas tend to better suit their writing. We'll see.

for the plot, it makes me remember an old comedic taiwanese drama (maybe around 1998-2004?) which I watched in local TV in my country. In that drama, there was a guy who can see ghost, i can't remember why he can see it, but that happen when he entered the dorm in his first year of college, and he kinda freaked out for that and he's a coward one, but after the story goes, then he helped the ghosts to solve their problems which unresolved when they're still alive. That drama was really hillarious and enjoyable, i wish i can remember the title of that drama, coz I wanna watch it again if it's available for download

I think this is a good career move for So Ji Sub. He needs to show that he can do more than dark and broody. If he actually manages to pull of comedy then he is a really great actor. To me the mark of a great actor is being able to do serious and funny equally well. It's why I think actors like Gong Yoo and Kang Ji Hwan are such treasures, or if you want to bring it back home, it's why I think Jimmy Stewart and Tom Hanks are two of the best actors ever born.
So, I hope this goes well for SJS and also to wash the terrible taste of Big out of my mouth. Please, Hong Sisters, get back on track!
