Hong Sisters’ new rom-com-horror drama confirms leads
by javabeans
Since this pairing had been rumored for a while, it’s not a huge surprise to hear that Gong Hyo-jin and So Ji-sub have both officially signed on to headline the new Hong Sisters drama Master’s Sun. (By the way, we’re talking about Hong Mi-ran and Hong Jung-eun, the Best Love and You’re Beautiful duo, not Hong Jin-ah and Hong Ja-ram, the Beethoven Virus and The King 2 Hearts duo.)
The show has an intriguing-sounding premise in that it’s a romantic comedy with horror elements; following an accident, the heroine becomes able to see ghosts. She feels cast off by the world and has lost hope in herself, which contrasts sharply with the self-centered and haughty hero who learns to (presumably) mature as a human being. Her “gloomy and quick to tears” heroine sounds a bit dire, but since it’s the Hong Sisters I do expect the dolor to be undercut with comedy; for instance, Gong’s character is too afraid to sleep at nights, which I foresee posing a problem since she has a full-time day job as a secretary. So Ji-sub plays the company president who sees people in terms of monetary worth. Can you imagine her falling asleep at crucial office moments? Hilarious.
This means Gong Hyo-jin will be the writer pair’s star for the second time, after playing a washed-up former idol in Best Love, which is good news; she has a lovely groundedness to her acting that actually works very well with the Hong Sisters’ brand of absurdity. It worked particularly well in Best Love, because no matter how insane Cha Seung-won got (and he got pretty wacky), her emotional throughline felt real. Gong explained being drawn to the project for its blend of irony and horror, which I hope is an aspect that gets full mileage — I LOVED the horror quirk of Arang and the Magistrate and was sad when it went away.
So Ji-sub is one of those actors I’ve been wanting to see tackling more comedy for a while now, just because he’s got such a heavy, melodramatic image. He hasn’t gotten in touch with his softer side in years, so either he’ll be really rusty at it, OR he’ll be unexpectedly fresh and surprise us with a little-before-seen goofy side. Hey, it totally worked for Cha Seung-won and Kim Tae-hee. If he manages to really sell the part of the guy who “gets intoxicated on the sight and sound of himself,” how hilarious would that be?
With PD Jin Hyuk of City Hunter and Prosecutor Princess also attached, so far Master’s Sun sounds pretty promising, even if it does sound an awful lot like Chilling Romance. At least he’s not a magician who conjures ghosts this time too. Truth be told, if not for the colossal suckage that was Big, I’d be a lot more excited about this. But I’m not about to write off anybody for one flop, especially when their work has given me so many hours of enjoyment otherwise, so I’ll be approaching with enthusiasm, albeit muted.
Master’s Sun will air on SBS in August.

I've created my own world where Big never existed, so I can look forward to this show without any prejudice or fear of another colossal failure. I have faith in the leads (two of my favorites) and the writers to deliver a winner like Best Love again. Please?

I love GHJ, but I promised myself that I wasn't going to get psyched up for another Hong sisters drama. I didn't think Best Love was all that, and Big was just embarrassing for us all. Like, "I wipe it from my memory on a regular basis" bad.
There's potential, but it feels like they've lost their footing (or are going for something that doesn't work for me anymore).

I was skeptical about this drama since I have disliked GHJ in every role I've seen her. Still I was going to give it a try, but now that I know it's a Hong Sisters' drama... Those Hong Sisters... I'll gladly skip it all together.

Unsure about this drama so far but hoping for something fun since I have really enjoyed most of the Hong sisters stuff. Not a huge fan of the main actress they chose, I didn't find her compelling at all in Best Love but maybe it was just the character. Fingers crossed for a fun drama!

Not the story line or the concept, but if this drama has the same atmosphere and undertones of subtle horror and humor that Chilling Romance had, then I'm all on board. Chilling Romance was awesome for so many reasons (Son Ye Jin and Lee Min Ki included). I wouldn't ask for a dramaland remake, but I'm hoping the delivery and atmosphere are similar.
I've been fond of the Hong Sisters since I first saw You're Beautiful (quickly followed by My Girl, My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, and Delightful Girl Chun Hyang without realizing all of these series were penned by the same writing team), so despite Big's recent crazy flop, I'm still looking forward to anything new by them. I'm up for second and third chances.
Of course, I AM new to Gong Hyo Jin and So Ji Sub, so this will be a new experience for me anyway. I'm not a completely new K-drama fan, but I'm still a far way from being an experienced viewer, so despite their high profile stats, I haven't caught either of these two in anything else, not even anything recent.

I'm so excited for this new show even though I ended up dropping Big around episode 9. The Hong Sisters will always claim a special spot in my heart just because they were my earliest exposure to Kdrama :)

I can't wait to see So Ji Sub in a comedy!! You're right, it was getting a bit boring watching him doing only intense acting. He has such a cute side! Such a huge fan of So Ji Sub! :D

Ooooh the Hong Sisters are back! I'm still pissed as hell for Big being a massive embarrassing waste of Gong Yoo's acting skills, but I'm tuning in for this. Hope it won't disappoint -_-

Oh no, another actor forced to act like an idiot for the sake of the trend, horrible characters like Enrique, whom acted like a rabbit on red bull and expresso, I wanted just to hit him on the head with a pan. and park shi hoo acting like a total idiot on alice and poor SSh in when a man loves and that poor kid from cn blue in heartstrings I just want to tie all of them and lock them away on a place where I don't have to watch them again. Now, SJS come on, yes, it worked for Cha seung Won but he wasn't trying comedy for the first time if you have followed him you know he had really silly roles in movies and in other dramas, and he can deliver comedy lines and he can be serious but that is not a talent everyone has that is a special gift, and her well, she is a bit awkward so she is ok but So Ji sup if history repeats itself and he acts like those guys I know I will hate him in that drama for sure. What is wrong with these writers, can't they write anymore, I have watched all of their dramas and my girl was great, and I enjoyed most of best love... Many romantic comedies have been wonderful without using stupidities... I don't know if they lost their touch maybe it is time to get new writers there has to be more talented ones out there.

Before anyone says anything, I know they didn't write those dramas with those characters, for some reason every writer in korea either writes about time traveling or stupid characters that act like WTH is wrong with them. Bu if we examined the Hong sister's luck with comedy and funny actors look what they did to poor Gong Yoo, that drama was a total disgrace, he must be embarrased to be associated with such a horrible thing... If I was him I would walk with a paper bag covering my face. So wow, I was really looking forward to this drama but now I don't know I lost all interes.
