Lee Min-ho in new drama from star writer Kim Eun-sook

Lee Min-ho! Back in a drama! From “rom-com queen” writer Kim Eun-sook! So many feelings to feel! Don’t forget to breathe!

This is quite the power hookup, as far as big names go — Kim Eun-sook dramas are huge hits almost automatically, with A Gentleman’s Dignity and Secret Garden being her two most recent offerings. Perhaps the bigger accomplishment is that her dramas aren’t “merely” popular; they often have that extra little kick that make them pop-culture buzz projects, whether it’s due to a particular line of dialogue or a recurring joke or a blue sequined tracksuit. (Hand-stitched in Italy!)

This drama is titled (a little awkwardly) He Who Wishes To Wear the Crown, Endure Its Weight: Heirs. (I hope it’ll just go by Heirs in the way that the long version of Nice Guy’s title was only used on posters and promos.) There’s very little information available about the concept or story; we merely have writer Kim’s assurances that she is creating the hero just for Lee Min-ho, to suit him perfectly. Considering how her male leads have historically been very memorable, I have no doubt we’re in for an interesting role here.

I’ll admit that I’m not personally super excited about Kim Eun-sook’s work (I have major love-hate relationship with her shows), but I do think that having her name attached to a drama means it’s very likely going to be a fizzy, banter-filled, slick and glossy romantic comedy that audiences just love to eat up, which appeal to a wide age range of viewers, whether teenaged or ajumma-aged or older (hey, grandmas love romance too, right?). And I can definitely get onboard Lee Min-ho being in another romantic comedy.

As for Lee Min-ho… well, he’s Lee Min-ho. You know, I’ll call a spade a spade: Faith finally opened my eyes to the cracks in his acting facade, whereas previously I’d sincerely believed he had once-in-a-generation phenom potential. Now I’ll concede he is a pretty good actor for his age and experience level, but not without some obvious limitations, who has some work to do to upgrade to the next level of his craft. That said, Lee Min-ho does possess a rare spark that lives regardless of technical skill, and he may still be a once-in-a-generation actor in a pop-culture sense — damn, he is popular. It’s his special It Factor that makes him so exciting to watch… and no, the beauty doesn’t hurt.

Directing is Kang Shin-hyo, who worked on Tazza and Midas. Heirs will be 20 episodes long and plans to air on SBS later this year.

The only drama thta I love to pieces from this writer is CITY HALL. I tried SG and Gentleman Dignity but both failed me. I dropped thevlast 2 drama after few episodes and never regret it.

Lee Min Ho ??? Another reason I will never waste my time to watch this drama (unless the hero is changed to Won Bin hehe). No offense to LMH fans but I just couldn't stand LMH so yeah good luck for those who will watch this drama.

I'm hoping for another drama that will hook me in the way Secret Garden did. I've not seen anything else from this writer other than A Gentleman's Dignity, which I did watch in its entirety, but which I found merely mildly entertaining. I guess I ought to watch On Air and City Hall now, huh? I like Lee Min Ho, but I agree there's no way he'll be able to pull of playing a high school student---a young teacher fresh out of college, perhaps....

I'm a sucker for a good Rom-com, whether American, Korean, or Taiwanese. PLEEEEASE! I'm starving for one of those Drama gods! Just one. Pretty please?

Why can't you be 16 episodes?! Wait.. will I regret this statement once this drama airs? Just like School 2013, I thought 16 was enough, but it wasn't! But it's from Kim Eun-sook, 16 is definitely enough. I could never finish her last 2 dramas.

I hope that Lee Min Ho will finally have a role that does not require him to get shot (City Hunter), stabbed (Faith) or paired with a clumsy noona who gives him no end of trouble (Personal Taste).
Strong woman and strong man pairing - now that would be fun!

Good for LEE MIN HOO;I love collecting korean dvds,i really like the way they act, their combination of actor and actress, the story, the concept, and their tradition. So far i have more than two dozens of korean drama and movies collection.
For the actors i love Park si hoo super, then kim soo hyun for moon embracing the sun.
For actress i like moon chae won,lee yo won,shi min ah,han ga in,and park min young.

Oh jeez. I'm kinda half excited for this? LMH is really suited for rom coms, but I despise Kim Eun Sook's writing. I don't find her dramas really romantic or well written. They are generally plotless, her characters are usually pretty one dimensional, and I don't even get me started on how she writes her male leads :( URGH. Why :(

This.
I dropped Secret Garden like a rock after two episodes and stayed far, far away from AGD for exactly these reasons. I hate how she writes her super jerky male leads; the gender dynamics in both Secret Garden and (from what I've read) AGD were so awful.
I'm glad Lee Min Ho's back but I wish it had been a drama I was more excited about.

I know. And if it really is a high school drama, I will be extremely disappointed. Sorry, but she does sexual dynamics really well (a rarity in kdrama!), and that will be cut off at the knees if this is a high school drama - and we will be lucky to see one closed-mouth first kiss. Spare me.

Don't worry, you're not the only one! I'm here for our dear writer-nim only. I can understand why she's doing this: All her previous dramas were about 30 years old people relationships (AGD about the 40 yo). She might want to try something a bit different and put her lines in the mouth of younger characters (+ that's the reality of the market for rom-coms: Flowerboys, Reply 1997...)

I just hope this new drama won't take the direction of Secret Garden and Gentelman's dignity. I personally don't get what people dig on those dramas? All this chatting, all this touching, all those makjang things- aren't they extremely boring?
I would not mind AT ALL if this drama follows the direction of City Hall- that was surely one of the best dramas I have ever watched . Probably because it was about a real thing- I was very much interested in the political intrigue, too.
I also hope this drama will cater to all ages, and won't be anything like- Flower boy next door- Love rain- Flower boy ramyun shop. No idols, please! Neither I would like it to be like The Greatest Love- the worst drama ever; or like BIG, which was so nill.
BUT A GOOD ROM-COM WITH AWESOME CAST AND SOME IMPROVED ACTING FROM LMH )))- I AM ALL FOR IT!!!!!

I like Kim Eun Sook's work. Probably mostly because of the layers. I liked it when she took over for My Princess in episode 8. OMG, made the man hot in that. Before episode 8, didn't like him much, but by the end, I was drooling (from the writing--though not many followed those insights.)

City Hall also... the bathtub scenes... so SWEET.

And I felt mixed about Gentleman's Dignity.

I did get the ending to Lovers in Paris as well.

She's the type of writer, that if you pay attention to the details, you not only get a laugh, but a reward for paying attention. She gives you pay off. Especially if you have literary inclinations.

I'm probably one of the few that got Secret Garden... and I skipped the key episode to make it better.

Do I sense a drama tide turning? Did the K-drama God get his butt kicked by his wife? I hope so!

(And the eye candy doesn't hurt either).

One of the reasons why I like her dramas: She has a visual writing and you can't wash the dishes while watching her shows. If something is shown or heard, then it matters and you will have the explanation later.
God knows how many times I watched SeGa, entirely or just an episode to have a good laugh. I still discover little details that I didn't notice before.
Sidenote: I didn't know she had participated in the writing for My Princess O.o : It's not written anywhere! As a script doctor maybe?

LOL, visual writing made me think of the scene in City Hall where Mi Rae and Jo Gook meet for the first time - she is cleaning up after the town meeting, bent over stuffing junk food under her shirt, and his first view of her is just this full shot of her posterior. The look on his face is priceless.

Required fields are marked *

You can know it's her in My Princess, because...

- The obsession with the eye lashes when the guy is sleeping. (Was in City Hall, tent scene)
- The tying up of the hair in the cabin~~ (OMG, I melted--similar scene in City Hall, also made me melt, bathtub scene towards the end.)
- The whole clue dropping from episode 8 forward about the politics and why he likes her.... (the politics amped up) (You should see my comment trail on those episodes, analyzing the hell out of it)
- The banter also became a lot better (in my opinion)

Her finger prints are all over it.

Basically if not for her writing, I probably would have ditched the thing. But she took over halfway through, and the politics amped up twice the amount and then the love story became a whole bunch better. The foreshadowing was right on the money and she rewarded you with it twice over in the most romantic way. I was dying and twisting with the details. I believe it was BD and I were discussing it in the comments from Episode 8, making guesses, and we got pay off and lines to back us up. Even, the ending is so much her work. (Where it indicates the ending). That's definitely her touch, doncha think?

People complained on My Princess that the mood changed from Episode 8, I welcomed it and sat up.

Plus her men since her first few scripts have turned HOT. The whole supporting the females they love bit... in the RIGHT and non-codependent way. I drool. (I.want.a.man.like.that) And if they don't initially, they come to, Secret Garden, City Hall, My Princess....

Did you catch the flower bit in Secret Garden and what it really meant? The layers on it were really good.

The thing is if you don't pay attention to her foreshadowing and the details, you don't get the subtle pay off and then the final nail where it says it outright. Sometimes she leaves you in the dust if you don't pay attention, such as in her first script, Lovers in Paris. (Which I totally followed and had to explain.) Some people complain off of that, but I LOVE that. She's asking you if you're actually watching.

Finesse~~ though I love the Hong Sisters to pieces, I love them for the opposite reason from KES...

Personally, I adore Lee Min-ho. He's not a brilliant actor, but he's got the stuff to BE a brilliant actor.

As for Kim Eun-sook, I liked A Gentleman's Dignity, though it was not without it's flaws. Secret Garden I didn't like. I only watched four episodes of it, but after episode four, I couldn't stand it anymore and just had to stop watching. Hopefully Heirs will be really good, or it will be a waste of time for Lee Min-ho. Hopefully the female lead is excellent and closer to his age than Kim Hee-sun was in Faith.

Finally. This is very promising news. I really enjoy Lee Min ho's work. Even when some of his dramas go askew for whatever reason, he always makes me happy. And working with a writer with such a good track record on shows, this just bodes well. I don't know about the director. I hope that everything goes well because this is just too early days to get too excited. I hope we have something wonderful ahead of us. Drama land needs some cracktastic magic.

Since many are contemplating their dream casting, I'll play along a bit. I'd actually like to see him cast with a female lead that possesses some...earthiness, to be subtle.

I'd love to see him reunited with anyone from the main BOF cast.

Female lead (s) thoughts- In no particular order, just people I'd like to see in a good romcom:

Oh Yi-na

Uee

Park Se Young

Hwang Sun-hee

Song Ji-hyo

Lim Ju-eun

Yoon Eun Hye

Lee Ji-ah

Okay, I resisted the Lee Min-ho for dramas and dramas, until I watched Faith. Yes the consensus on dramabeans is that it's not Lee Min-ho's best drama, but I just loved his character. I can't tell you how many times I've rewatched it... okay just the scenes that featured one of the two leads, haha. So I am totally on board the Lee Min-ho train and am super super excited about this drama.

I have to say, I haven't fallen in love with any Kim Eun-sook dramas. I liked Secret Garden, but I gave up on A Gentleman's Dignity. Haven't seen any of the others. Hoping this drama gets a leading lady and second lead cast who can act!

Oh yay LMH is up for a new drama again! But what is this with the HIGH SCHOOL stuff? I mean I don't mind the romantic comedy part of course (although I do prefer my dramas with action and angst but hey i'll live) I, for one, did actually love Boys Over Flowers but even that awesome drama did not convince me in anyway that they were 16 year old high-schoolers. The other Lee Min Ho dramas that I watched in its entirety was City Hunter which was great as well though PMY was meh as KimNaNa. Both Personal Taste and Faith I didn't paricuarly bother to actually sit down and watch fully more just came here to read the recaps and maybe watch some of the good scenes. I admit LMH is a good actor which might just be a TINSY bit biased because of his good looks but tbh he is better than those idols who can't act to save their live but still insist upon *coughs DREAM HIGH 2 coughs* They had better not choose any idols for the lead female. And no stiff ones either like Park Min Young or Park Shin Hye (now no haters please this is just my humble opinion) the latter who can't kiss same goes with Goo Hye Sun. And I don't particuarly want any actress who is way older than Lee Min Ho either. In Faith, I sort of just went with it because of the fantastic chemistry between KHS and LMH which out of all the leading ladies whom LMH has paired with before I think was the best. Han Ji Min is great and I do hope she returns to the small screen but not with Lee Min Ho please no... So here are my top suggestions (if NOT a high school drama cuz LMH is too old for that):

> YOON EUN HYE : great actress remember her from Princess Hours (sorta skimmed Coffee Prince, Lie To Me, and I Miss You which were decent enough) I think it'd be amazing to see the chemistry between her and
LMH unfold
> MOON CHAE WON : another awesome actress loved her from the Princess' Man (again, flicked through Nice Guy which showed some superb acting from her)
> PARK SE YOUNG : loved her character in Faith and I know she's in this new drama coming up with YG but *crosses fingers* maybe she could ditch that one to come here?
> SHIN MIN AH : now there's an actress who can definately bring on the cute and look young for her age!

The last two I would partially recommend - Han Hyo Joo and Kim So Eun - however, if they were cast I would want them to take on a bad-ass leading girl, ESPECIALLY HHJ who I have only seen play the poor and innocent person; KSE too I believe she has the talent to be the leading lady if only she took on roles that are less feminine and more rough and strong (like Geum Jan Di from BOF was at the beginning until midway she just became this weak girl).

Yeah.... out of all of them I REALLY want Park Se Young but I highly doubt it because of her other drama, but Han Hyo Joo will also do because its been a while since I last saw her post-Dong Yi days. Well, all the best of luck with the casting then cant wait for who is chosen x.

I don't understand why many seem to trash LMH in Faith, the directing and the editing were bad and could have been vastly improved but a lot of the issues were that they ran out of time and it seems they were over budget and had to cut costs as well.

I think LMH was excellent and had just the right amount of emotion and gravitas for General Choi Young. There are many who love him as Choi Young and think that he portrayed Choi Young perfectly. Many who did not like him in his earlier shows fell for him as Choi Young. More like they fell for Choi Young and they may not have if someone else portrayed Choi Young. Some who thought Lee Jun Ki would have been good as Choi Young changed their minds later.

I don't think that Song Joong Ki is a great actor. He is good looking but I did not notice a wide range of emotions from him in Nice Guy from what I can remember. He seemed bland throughout the whole drama.

LMH is perfect for rom-coms but he was not credible as a General who's supposed to be a seasoned warrior (his body language is kind of clumsy, furthermore if you compare with other actors like the ones in Warrior Baek Dong Soo). He was miscast in Faith IMO but also didn't have a serious preparation for his role and for that I blame the chaotic production.

Required fields are marked *

Yes, I like LMH but I did not believe for a second that he was a battle-hardened warrior. He is still very much a juvenile, in the theatrical sense (juvenile = good-looking young hero).
I think he is right to play youthful parts at this point in his career/life - he just seems to be a person for whom everything has always gone right, and I think for someone like that it is really tough to pull off world-weariness, cynicism, bereavement, the sorts of emotions that come from being knocked around for awhile and seeing a lot/too much.

0

Required fields are marked *

But how could he have created a character that played equally well against such a huge range of stylistic differences in the other lead characters:
the king (subtle, nuanced and powerful)
the female lead (OTT comedic, switching to OTT melo)
his fellow warriors (earthy, realistic bromance)
the villains (cheesetastic comic book fare, with a side of superpowers)

...and also avoid insulting the memory of a national hero?

Wasn't it too much to ask of ANY actor?

I'm not asking for historical realism since it's a fusion sageuk with magicians inside and I agree that the drama could never have been a gem, whoever would have been cast, but it could have been better. For me, they had the solution right before their eyes: Lee Philip would have been perfect for the role. He's an actor who has the experience of sageuks (speech & fights) & he had the right age. He was involved in the project since the beginning so he knew the material. He can play serious and broody but also comedy or flirty. Of course, he's not a Hallyu star bankable in Japan, so... On the other side, LMH could have taken his Doc's part and have learnt from his sunbae on the set. It's sad actually cause everyone lost in this game: Fans and actors.

Interesting. I don't speak the language so can't appreciate the dialect nuances. But I did notice that Lee Philip seemed to stand out. He has a strong screen presence and made me want to see more of his character.

What else is he in that's worth watching?

0

@gidget: He didn't film a lot but I personally loved him in Secret Garden and in Legend (other sageuk fusion, with Bae Yong Joon).

It would really be great if Han Ji Min will take the female lead. She's a good actress she can bring the best in Lee Min Ho. I don't care much for Park Min Young, I think her acting in City Hunter was overrated. Peace to her fans. She's a so so actress. Her eyes always betray her. She needs to attend more acting lessons to get better and be called a good one. Anyway, Lee Min Ho is Lee Min Ho, he will always bring in good number of viewers. And he will get better in acting, given his determination and projects. Though he has more bowls of rice to go to be at par with Park Ki Woong . Random, Kim Bum himself has gotten better so far.

I'm also kind of puzzled by all of the praise for Park Min Young. To me, she is sort of pleasant and blank, and none of the romantic emotion that she must have felt (they dated, after all) came out in her scenes with LMH in City Hunter. Given the fact that they have broken up, I imagine that even the fragile sort of connection on-screen they had before will be gone.

Are there no details on the plot/storyline yet? I'm curious as to what kind of drama this will be. And I think someone in the comments mentioned wanting Han Ji-min as the leading lady, and I totally second that. She would be great. Han Hyo-joo or Kim So-eun would be fantastic as well. :D

So glad he has a new drama. I was disappointed by Faith ,but don't think you can blame him for it ,as at times the story didn't make sense and the ending was very flat.

Hope this one's a hit for him!

Thank u for your lengthy but with full of substance comments despite the fact that the series is just on its pre-operational stage. I love the way you describe their strengths, even their weaknesses. But most of all, i love the way you describe Lee Min Ho as being this "once-in-a-generation phenom potential. Now I’ll concede he is a pretty good actor for his age and experience level...Lee Min-ho does possess a rare spark that lives regardless of technical skill, and he may still be a once-in-a-generation actor in a pop-culture sense — damn, he is popular. It’s his special It Factor that makes him so exciting to watch… and no, the beauty doesn’t hurt.- DAMN, in all caps :) hahaha! and we all love him- in his characters, and in his BEING Lee Min Ho. Thanks, Javabeans :)
