Yoochun’s fans demand firing of his co-star

File this one under the What The Fuck Files of Dramaland.

There’s a tempest brewing in the teapot of I Miss You, the upcoming MBC melodrama starring Yoochun and Yoon Eun-hye. You may have heard of the show? Perhaps once or twice, or okay, practically daily as the drama gears up for its launch next week. The controversy? Netizens are demanding that the production fire one of the actresses, Jang Mi-in-ae. The reason? “She doesn’t suit the drama.”

Suuuuure. Says the netizens who haven’t seen a single episode, to the people making the show. According to the news reports, the uproar stems from the JYJ fandom, as in the supporters of Yoochun’s pop group with Jaejoong and Junsu. Essentially they don’t like her and want her out, and have been exceedingly vocal about it.

Jang Mi-in-ae plays a webtoon writer harboring a one-sided love for Yoochun’s character, and she gets entangled in the love triangle with Yoon Eun-hye. Aw, that means she’s not even a real contender for the hero’s affections — Oppa is safe from her clutches, but the fandom is reportedly adamant against having Jang Mi-in-ae sullying the drama with her “sexy image.”

Yes, Jang has had some sexy photo shoots, but nothing really scandalous; it’s the standard stuff of your Star Hwabo variety. You know, bikinis and cleavage. (It’s Maxim lite, not Playboy.) And she’s played sultry characters before — you may recall her seductive Min-ae in 2006’s Soulmate (which is on my all-time favorite dramas list). But what should that matter? No sluts allowed in dramaland, is that what you’re saying? No sexiness except for the kind that’s kid-tested, mother-approved?

Poor girl. What a crap reaction to your casting, and when you’re just a supporting role. Aside from her image concerns, the Jang Mi-in-ae opposition has accused JYJ’s agency, C-JeS Entertainment, of casting Jang as a coattail-rider. Basically, they think the agency has bought the casting using Yoochun’s starpower. To which I say: Do you even know how entertainment works? There is a term for this, and it is packaging. It’s hardly shady. It’s the whole point of being with a large agency that has the weight to package a project, to leverage a bigger name to get its lesser-knowns attached and working in projects. This is standard in Hollywood.

I thought this hullaballoo would blow over quickly because the controversy is so stupid, but it’s lingered and even picked up steam. I suppose it shouldn’t be too surprising given how large and fervent the JYJ fanbase is — they’re super organized and passionate, sometimes to a frightening degree. This is the group battling all those sasaeng fan problems (as in, the intrusive kind of uber-fan who crosses the line into stalking and harassing the object of their affection). And you know, I totally understand having a strong negative reaction to a casting and wishing for an undo pill. If we love a drama, or a star, or an idea, the possibility of something ruining that can lead to a lot of frustration.

But there’s reasonable disappointment, and there’s inappropriate. It’s saddening that they’re jumping all over this actress so fiercely. The production has even come out to state that Jang Mi-in-ae will not be ousted (phew), and that she got the role after going through the full audition process. “When you watch the drama, you will understand why we chose Jang Mi-in-ae,” said one rep.

The more I think about it, it just makes me sad and mad. It’s just dumb.

hmm...the real question is: Will DB succumb to some JYJ's request about clarifying which class of fans are behind this?

I hope not. I'm sorry, but this is a blog, not a new reporting site, and the burden is on the readers to accept Dramabeans as OPINION, rather than burdening Dramabeans with some requirement to be the New York Times of Kdramas. Sheesh.
Conscientious readers will browse through the comments, where there are plenty of refutations of any involvement from JYJ fans. I don't see why Dramabeans has any requirement for a "clarification."
Better just to let it lie, or it will become a case of the lady who doth protest too much.

I completely agree. JB in no way need to clarify her comments. That this is even an issue make this whole thing that much more insane. I'm just amazed at where this thread has gone. And I hope JB just leaves it alone. None of this deserves a response or clarification, IMO.

Third hand up here. Besides if people read the article carefully, it clearly attributes the "JYJ" fan base thing to "news reports". So this article is NOT a direct source report and is very clearly an opinion blog entry.

IF the news reports are WRONG then it's the fans' prerogative to hunt down those news agencies and offer feedback directly to them. All dramabeans does is to report from an already-published source and embellish with opinions (or past news reports, like the sasaeng fans issue). Changing the article here or clarifying things here won't change the fact that those news reports are still blaming JYJ fans, rightly or wrongly. So if you are unhappy, go directly to the source and let them know they're wrong - that's the only way to fix things properly.

After skimming the comments so far, I went to read JB's article again and nothing in it was actually *false*. If you're a JYJ fan and you feel maligned, don't be! Javabeans was only referring to the crazy ones, not you all who didn't know anything about this.

On another note, this uproar is certainly driving publicity for the drama. Skeptical me wonders if this was done for ratings, at the expense of the image of Yoochun's forever-dedicated-but-not-insane fans.

I don't think JB needs to address quibbles such as fandom naming semantics. But there are several incorrect statements in this article that I think should be corrected. I mean, I could care less if Jang Mi In Ae posed nude or had a sex scene in a film, but if it's true, then I don't really care to be expressly told that she's only showed some cleavage or worn bikinis in some photoshoot. No, it doesn't change my opinion of her or this topic; I'm just not a fan of misinformation.

And also, chances are that everything's been blown out of proportion. Some people might have complained on IMY message boards or something, and now it's apparently become some big controversy. Korean journalism is shoddy and we should take it with a grain of salt. And again, there's the question of semantics. How many comments count as an uproar? 1,000? Because I highly doubt there were that many. And I highly doubt that all the hypocritical, uber conservative netizens against JMIA's casting are only JYJ fans, but hey, it's a good buzz word that will get a lot of article views.

JB posted a (sort-of) reactionary post about something that might be unfounded. And as a result, DB readers, including the bandwagoners, the feminists, the Yoochun haters, the Yoochun fangirls, etc are all up in arms and squabbling amongst each other.

I guess the apropos message seems to be: congratulations everyone. You've all been trolled by a classic example of media play. It appears as though CJ-Es sent out a press release to all the major news portals that there's been an "uproar" in the JYJ fandom about Jang Mi In Ae's casting. And what happens after news portals publish this press release and spreads it around? People google her nude pictures and sex scenes. And voila! CJ-Es's relatively unknown actress immediately becomes infamous.

0

I also agree! On DB there's been posts about certain idols I like (although I am not a JYJ fan in particular) that haven't been entirely accurate, but...I never expected DB to "clarify." DB isn't a news source itself, it's a blog. JB is not the fan of every group and actor that is out there, and we shouldn't expect her to know. She's passing us news on what's going on in Koeran entertainment, not writing some article.

If the news report are wrong, then fans can calmly explain on articles, or somehow go directly to the news site. DB posts articles that have lots of info, are amusing, have eye candy, or, in this case, are totlaly WTF and just interesting to know. And it's not like JB put in something that wasn't in the news or anything, in fact..she was pretty much neutral on the thing and it's clear from the article that it's not all JYJ fans or whatever.

Just not commenting and letting it die down (which is what JB seems to be doing) is the best ^.^ And the rest of us sane people can enjoy the rest of DB.

hmm while i sure it only a very loud minority, and frankly the production team should not indeed take any notice of them, it is also a personal attack on the actress as well as on her source of income, I sure if they tried hard enough that must be a case for a law suit of some kind!
There can also be a case of other productions thinking maybe bringing an idol who as said are not being case for their acting skills but as selling points for the show a second thought. As you not only bringing in the Idol you also bring in his fan base as well, crazies among them..and at some point it is just not going to be worth all the bother and fuss.

Poor woman even if this a PR stunt made by her agency her image will still suffer because of this mess.

also lol @ the "do not generalize the entire JYJ fanbase!!!1111" comments, are these people for real? I bet Javabeans is in a corner somewhere with a single tear streaming down her face blaming herself for the injustice she made with jyj fans all over the world.
She should reflect imo, this mean JB *humph*

Ah this drama has too many controversies before the drama even began. I vividly remember reading comments on db last month that C-Jes asked JMIA to be "bundled" with Yoochun; and the production company reluctantly granted their wish because they're desperately wanted Yoochun to be their Han Jung Woo. And the script was written specifically for Yoochun.

I personally don't mind JMIA, she's okay in Soulmate. And this is not the first time agency "bundles" their actors to star in drama together. About her raunchy pictures, just let it go. We watch her for her acting, not her past.

Considering she attended the press conference, I assume her role is quite significant in this drama (unless the writer decides to tone her role down, just like Flute Boy, Fire Hand, Dr Jang in Faith who were in the posters n attended the press conf; but their scenes were very minimal).

And I hope to see her in the teaser too, considering she's the 2nd female lead.

Some days ago in this site there were news about Choi Kang Hee being casted as lead in Joo Won's new drama. I read many harsh comments about the actress, should I say all Joo Won's fans are against her? that Joo Won fans hate CKH because she is too old for him? Of course I won't, because I know that are just opinions of individuals, nothing more.
mbc asked for opinion when JMIA was casted and some people, Yoochun fans, jyj fans, drama fans or some others who were bored wrote negative comments about her. So what? I say, it doesn't mean there is an official petition or whatsoever going on against her. I think this just went out of hand because some reporter knew about it and probably didn't have any story, so to fill space wrote that. Anyway, sometimes we speak thinking all cultures are the same and while I don't care if actors appeared nude somewhere, in Korea it matters they value the "image", that's why I guess some people were upset.
About the method of casting is a common thing so I don't see the problem, YC himself got his first role because of his idol status, and while some think he's a bad actor I find in him potential. He is improving in each role he gets.

Everyone's talking about how horrible the fans are but the things is, people in love do crazy things right? Especially when it's an obsessive, one sided love (see second lead chicks of most melodramas).

Things is, her sexy image is seen as a threat because of course every actress playing a role has the potential to steal the heart of the actor and where does that leave the fan?! (That's sarcasm for those who can't tell by reading lol)

It's childish and silly. I hope no JYJ or HoMin ever gets caught in a relationship. If it's this bad when they are acting, the woman's life would be in danger if it was real.

These kind of stupid things always get blown out of the water and ignite some fights but hey, if you didn't know about the drama before, you definitely know now. :) I have seen enough of the drama/ scandals to know that you can't believe everything you read.

I am in this drama for eun hye and ysh but I have no problems with any other casting and pretty sure that I will love the otp. I have no problems with bundle casting... It's a part of the business world frankly. I wish jang the best of luck.

I feel sorry for jyj fandom for being called crazies and its not really them. Frankly I am surprised cause from most things I have read from the Joo won Ckh casting... I agree that the thing these so-called fans did was uncalled for but saying that Park Yoochun is too "unsexy" for this lady, that's harsh. Jang Mi-in-ae may have a sexy body but let's get real here, she has an average face...she was born in 1984 but looks at least 5 years older imo (looks at Han Chae Ah- Bridal Mask, same age but she is 10 times sexier than her)

PS : I'm not even a fan of Park Yoochun but I'm sure it was a stressful situation to be involved in...he had to make public apologies in behalf of his mindless fans and believe me, he's also at risk of being snubbed by future directors....

Hi Lili,

No offense meant, but the comment was not meant to be taken quite as seriously as you did.
I don't have a clue who is who in the whole fiasco but I just see the funny side of it:

If some fans think she's too sexy for him, then some other people/fans are also allowed to think and protest that he's too unsexy for her which leads to a war between the 2 groups and while this is Fan World War x (FWWx) (where x is an integer of your choice), one or more of the following could happen:

-> the drama goes on as planned with a comic side entertainment of the FWWx
-> the drama gets cancelled and FWWx gets to replace the main drama
-> both artistes in question are dropped from the drama and peace reigns
-> both artistes in question get married and their respective fans reconcile and unite and hold hands and sing kumbayah and everyone is happy and the whole world is a-right once more...... until the next fan war

Any more scenarios, anyone? Anyone? Ferris Bueller?

It just goes to reflect the whole silly situation for what it is - just plain silly.

anyhoo, i don't like JMIA either, but demanding production team to remove her is just stupid. if she or anyone in the casts sucks later, they deserve criticsm for it. but if she did well, those craycray fans complaining about she won't fit well with her character should praise her for it.

Another thing is. PYC fans have complained since announcement of her casting. They didn't like how she used PYC getting bashed to promote herself with many interviews.

She also is the only person doing so many interviews before a drama. Non of the leads did that. And every time news about Missing You comes out, C-Jes released her interview articles so that if you search Missing You, one would see only her interview articles.

I feel sorry for the actress, and I hope she does very well.
But at the same time, I do sympathize with PYC fans in this case. I guess it's the agency who is really messed up. LeeKim production said, they are trying their best to release articles after jangmiinae's interviews so it wouldn't be covered by interview articles. But unfortunately they have no control over what the agency puts out. They will do better marketing the drama.

If I was a PYC fan..
Forget that, even if I was a YEH fan..I'd be upset..
When everything about missing you is covered up by the interview articles. That's like..who's the star of this drama? who is the focus of this drama, who is bigger than the drama?..I'd be like..let's let Missing You succeed first, then you go do your massive number of interviews.^^

Hey, nobody's asking me but if this was a rom-com, I'd request for YEH to be out of this drama. But since I'm not watching coz it's not my drama genre type, I don't care enough to object.

You know, I really like JYJ and I support them more than the other group they split with, but I really dislike their super obsessed fans (just like Kim Hyun-joong's crazy fans). Way too young, too insecure, and too crazy.

Die-hard fans (of kpop groups) are crazy and SCARY. End of story. If you have no sense of reality, then you have a problem and should seek help.

I don't understand these kinds of things (and it seems to happen a lot more in Kdrama). If you dislike the girl, then don't watch it. I don't like Kiera Knightley or Kristen Stewart, so I avoid their films like the plague. Easy solution and it prevents you from getting angry during the whole viewing process.
