Happy OT, everyone!! Off to do grocery shopping now. In the meantime, can anyone tell me whether there usually is much difference between Viki and Dramafever subs? And if yes, which ones are better?

0
23
reply

Required fields are marked *

there is a difference but it isn't consistent. I like literal subs you get some really nice korean expressions that way, more often than not viki has them while dramafever has western colloquialisms. There are times when the Viki and dramafever subs are both barebones- I think usually after the editing on viki depending on how soon the episodes were subbed.

0

Required fields are marked *

ok, thanks ahjummabunny! I usually get Viki subs so I guess I'll stick with them then :)

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

the subs on Viki seem to be more true to the actual words spoken, rather than the gist of the meaning. (like, if you had someone translating sentence by sentence, rather than conversation by conversation) Some of the jokes are more cultural and don't translate as well and sometimes there's a play on words that involves the sound of the words, so those often don't make sense.

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think the most consistent subbing teams are on viki. I know about the jokes not coming over- or how someone can misunderstand who or what is being talked about when the previous sub said . . . but I think this issue is resolved for watchers when they learn more about the language and culture they're watching. One example that comes to mind of the limitations of subbing is in 1% of anything when the guy is saying something similar to "that person wants you to marry" and the girl misunderstands his meaning as his grandfather wants to marry her. The subs clearly state that the grandfather is the one anxious for the match between the two people so the girl misunderstanding doesn't make any sense at all. Subbers have a hard job. Maybe I'll join a spanish team.

0

Ok I have a stupid viki related sub question. How do you watch sans commentary. Last week I was there to watch Arang and Panda/hedgehog and though they were sometimes funny I kept being distracted by reading both the subs and the commentary at the top of the screen (Which for panda/hedgehog meant a lot of fangirling over Donghae). I have watched viki videos before without the commentary, so am a little confused on why some have them and some don't...

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

It's an easy fix! When you're watching a video on viki and you roll over it will your mouse, there's 4 little tabs on the far right of the video and the bar at the bottom with the video time/length, volume, and pixel setting. The option to turn off commentary is the very top little tab on the far right. It looks like a speech bubble. Just click it and it will go from white (comments are on) to gray (comments are off). Hope this helps!

Hello Kakashi!

I have seen some differences in translations between Viki and Dramafever AND Dramabeans (which then makes me confused about which translation I should consider). Regarding Viki and Dramafever, I am not sure which one is better. I remember one of the 1st episodes of "Faith" where one spy girl was talking to one of the bad guys and Dramafever just said that they were talking in a foreign language, and didn't translate what was being said. When I went to Viki (I stopped and went and checked at Viki), they had actually translated that conversation. I decided to stay with Viki because I felt that at least there, more of the drama was translated as a whole, or at least paraphrased. I know that Viki has typing errors at times, but I can always make or know what they meant to say because of the context and because of what was said before.

I think other OTers will be able to tell you the differences better than I would. If you don't mind reading translations, and if you have the time, you can also compare the translations with "With S2 Fansubs", which link you can find at the bottom of the page of Dramabeans on the right, under "Linky." The subbers at "With S2 Fansubs" are very thorough (and slower because they take their time to be that thorough and I think it is volunteer work as well). Some here will be able to tell you more about "With S2 Fansubs" as well.

Have a great weekend!

DF hires their subbers. Some come from WITHs2 subbers.
There can be different subbers from one episode to the next. Therefore the differences varies from series to series, episode to episode.
I am going offline to bed so someone else can expand on this.
Episode 5 of Faith- DF the King's position was subbed as "seat " instead of position when the King was talking about his position of being a King ( I am summarizing a conversation some of us had re DF vs viki subs )

Someone said there was a line somewhere " She is a tough cookie but she is ? soft dough inside" or something like that in a sageuk drama. :-)

I can tell you which subs are good provided you get the officially released subs from the Soompi threads ( some recent dramas as examples )- Kings 2Hearts, QIHM, Golden Time, Bridal Mask and Arang. Hauendae Lovers. From the other subbing team.

I was told- I could be wrong- that WITHs2 lost some subbers lately. I would be happy to be wrong as I download their softsubs as well for some series.

Hope it helps. I read these info and it's in one ear out the other.

withs2 used to be the hallmark of quality- well they were very respected when I was gobbling up dramas on mute. But when I started watching and learning korean I cringed at the lost words, jokes. But they are also inconsistent.

Re subs:

Recently for the Arang subs , they used the term "crackhead".

Really? Did the writers use that term or was it lost in translation?

-5 points for that.

Crackhead? You remembered which episode I would look. That is so odd when we've been trying not to use modern terms.
The problem is that someone has been ripping viki subs before it gets edited and posted on various sites and hatdsubbed onto videos. The final subs should not have crackhead.

oh they definitely did it - episode 3 I think? Possibly 2. I remember seeing that and thinking it was odd. I mean, clearly it's fusion but that's a LOT of fusion.

JoAnne thanks will check it out. Can't see the subs on my phone but check it tomorrow.Man I thought " what is the punk doing?" bad enough today.

0

ck10z~

Ep 5. Dol Sue uses the term a couple of times.

I don't recall if it was on DramaFever or Viki though.

0

I've seen that as well, but it must have been dramafever's subs since that's the only place I watched Arang.

0

Hi Kakashi;

I watch both DF and viki. I joined DF when they first opened. At the very beginning, DF bought their subbed stuff from other people, so there really wasn't much difference between them and viki. But for the past year or so, DF has been doing their own subs, and I find them frustrating at times for these reasons:
- they do not translate written material, like a note or the menu board (very important!) in Kimchi Family
- they tend to replace Korean idioms with North American idioms, which don't always fit (especially in sageuks)
- they will summarize things: I hate it when a character talks for a long time and DF gives you one sentence
- they replace common methods of address (oppa, hyung, etc.) with names, so you lose that layer of meaning.
that being said, they are getting much faster, and their site always has good quality video and I never get nasty viruses, annoying game pop-ups, or commercials (I'm a member). They keep track of what I've watched, where I left off, and what I would like to watch in the future, and the comments are fairly useful.
For a show that I really like, I'll watch both DF and viki - DF to get the comfortable viewing experience, then viki to get more words, both top and bottom (sometimes the top scroll of comments is more entertaining than the actual show...).

Yeah literal subs are sometime more entertaining.Like for Golden Time there was a line where I think the intestines were herniating out from the incision. The viki sub was "the intestines were crawling out ". I was totally eeked out but left it as it is because it was literal.
The thing I find amusing are actually the literal translations of Korean swearing .There are some really funny lines out there

0

Required fields are marked *

This!!!! You have captured my frustrations with DF perfectly. I especially hate it when someone gets a phone call and they show the phone but they don't say who it is. (I am always like who is it!!!!! who was it!!!)
Or when someone reads something shocking or pivotal in a letter and they don't sub it!

Required fields are marked *

Thanks so much for the awesome comments and the advise! You guys are awesome.

And I can't stress enough how SUPER GRATEFUL I am to all the subbers out there!!!! Of course, we non-Korean speakers wish for high quality subs, but to be honest, I would never dare complain about typos or weird words and stuff ... To be able to watch KDrama hours or a few days after they air is simply a gift and, well, priceless!

I'm sort of obsessed with finding the "best" source of subs. (I even posted on my blog about the differences between the way a Coffee Prince scene was subbed on a variety of sources, which was link of enlightening.)

I think it's impossible to generalize, as each individual subber handles things differently, but it's definitely true that DramaFever's subs are more Western-flavored (e.g., they use people's names in the subs, not words like oppa or noona). For my money, WITH S2's subs tend to be the best—they seem to try to convey the delivery of the words, not just the meaning (e.g., dialogue isn't presented in perfect sentence form).

Watching Arang and the Magistrate you get a sense of why “family” is so important in Korean culture, since they are the ones that will care to give you offerings of food and clothes and stuff.

Most of my Korean friends are Buddhist because I know they practice the yearly ancestor prayers. So I’m wondering, since there’s also a large Christian population, how does that influence their traditions? Do they still do ancestor rituals too?

0
12
reply

Required fields are marked *

I've seen it portrayed 2 ways in dramas- the families that don't because they're christian- and the families that have one parent form each religion and they do the rituals. The christian parent is usually catholic which I find very strange.

Required fields are marked *

The original culture is hard to erase, like USAers who was their hair according to eh phase of the moon. Like Christians who are afraid of ghost. Like Koreans misogynist society. Old ways and beliefs persist and you have a weird composite. Cheju/Jedu island has different old religeon thus it's a composites with Confucius and Jesus beliefs.
It's like Easter Eggs/Bunny. Decades of atheist Communist rule couldn't erase their 'Easter' ritual of boys getting drunk and getting eggs thrown at them. When a boy catches a girl, he puts her over his knees, pulls up her skirt and spanks her. Spring fertility rite = USA's Easter bunny & egg. A composite

0

Wow, I wondered about that, too, and I'm an east coaster born and raised! Maybe it was an old wives' tale from the backwoods of the Appalachians or something, from the days when they only bathed once a month...

0

I'm a life long West Coaster and I've never heard of that.

0

It is cut your hair with a waxing moon if you want it to grow faster and cut it with a waning moon if you want it to grow slowly.

They say that at beauty salons. I do not know where it came from originally.

0

My grandmother used to get the Old Farmer's Almanac when I was a kid....It may stem from there originally.

0

THAT I had heard of - but forgot!

0

Have never ever ever ever heard of USA folks washing their hair according to the phase of the moon. The US is made up of so many cultures...it's hard to think of all of us US folks generally sharing one tradition. Christians being afraid of ghosts? Not sure about that one either. Some Christians believe in ghosts and believe a command in Jesus name will dispel them. Some Christians don't believe in ghosts. Some Christians believe ghosts are demons. Some Christians don't believe in the supernatural. Generally speaking, in any culture, there are folks who might be afraid of ghost and folks who aren't. Japan, Korea, and the US have tons of horror movies about both good ghosts and bad ghosts.

As for ancestors, it all depends. Christianity is wide enough to include all kinds of cultural situations. Some folks honor the ancestors, some folks don't. I remember our (episcopalian) priest's wife. Naeko. Buddhist before she converted to Christianity. Born in Japan. Her family renounced her because while she honored the ancestors she simply did not believe her ancestors' salvation depended on her. And because she didn't believe that, it didn't serve to have a descendant not worshiping the ancestors. So they cut her loose. I'm thinking it probably depends on the family and how seriously Buddhist or seriously Christian they are.

OMG Geet ?!! Before I became a fan of Asian dramas I was/still am a die-hard Bollywood fan which led me to Indian tv serials. I honestly watched a show called Dil Mil Gaye with no subs, purely because I loved the lead actors chemistry together [the lead actress eventually left so I stopped watching] coincidentally the actress of Geet was one of the side character on that show. I didn't know/realize that Geet was being subbed on Viki. The only tv serial I know with subs is Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon (which I'm watching at the moment)

The male characters are all super losers .

0

Ahh John, is you lady wife's sanity still intact? Geet is our version of a z-lister makjang. Secondly, they run for months, and at time years at an end and end up lacking the punch that k, and j dramas do.
If she still hasn't seen I would suggest, Pyar ka bandhan (separated siblings, was pretty decent while I saw it back at home, cannot speak for it's quality now), "Mahi Way" will remind you of MNIKSS, Rishta.com (matchmakers/wedding planner hijinks)

My cousin and I made fun of that drama for being so cheesy. We still got sucked into watching it, though. She was the one who introduced it to me when I went to visit my family over summer vacation. It came on regularly on tv, and she would always tune in. It was kind of self-torture. We couldn't stand it since the plot wouldn't go anywhere and some of the characters were idiots, but it was so addictive. I finally got free from it's clutches when I came back to the US and couldn't find a site to stream it for me.

I remember this one scene where the two leads(?) were stuck in the rain because the car broke down and they had to stay at an abandoned cabin(?); all of a sudden, both of them burst into song, and we had to control ourselves from literally rolling on the ground since we were watching in the hospital. :)

Arang is my new favorite. I'm watching Faith with one of my daughters, it's good too, but Arang gets me. Maybe because I have teenage daughters, episode 4 made me almost cry, the way it showed the unfairness of her life, cut so short.
Shin Min Ah is such a fabulous actress - I love how she can be comic and show the spunkiness and high-energy of her character, then with a change in her eyes show the vulnerability, how easily she can be hurt. She's so full of life, in character, yet in terms of plot she is teetering on the edge of complete death - and she makes this fantastical tale believable.

Finished Ma Boy. Still no subs, boo hoo! Good thing it's still easy to get the gist of the drama even when I'm watching it raw!

Oh, and yay, I was right about Touch playing Hyun Woo's dancer friends. They were the guys dancing in the street at the beginning of Ep. 1, which means Hyun Woo was the guy with the hankie over his face. I knew I recognized Sungyong and Kanghyun after watching the Let's Walk Together music video umpteen times. And lol the reference to the music video. :D

Currently watching: To The Beautiful You.

Mostly just watching it for the cute, because WTH is all this coming and going, Jae Hee? Also, can't help but notice Sulli has curves, which the uniform doesn't entirely disguise, although a loose t-shirt does.

Tae Joon's actions are different now compared to before, since he's more aware of proximity to Jae Hee.

Oh, and Hanna, I could do with less of your gymnastics, kthxbai.

DS have an available fansub (as opposed to their CTS versions) you will find it at their site. So far episode 1 & 2 are available and three coming soon but there is a disclaimer that it is as polished as CTS versions because the translator is a relative newbie, doing it voluntarily.

Hi Raine!

I marathoned RMPW yesterday. At first I thought it wasn't my cup of tea, but I ended up rooting wholeheartedly for Hyuga and Makoto. I couldn't stop-- now I want the next installment! >_<

Greetings My Wondrous Beans!

Working from home in jammies today, woohoo! Currently chugging coffee and bopping in my seat to Tasty, 'Neo Na Ara' - but quietly, because the kid is still upstairs asleep. And the dog looks at me funny...

Let's see - sun is shining, cookout tomorrow with all the clan, payday was today...life's good. Still fat though. Oh well. I said good, not perfect.

New music - AM1997 introduced me to Jung Eun Ji (so damn cute, that girl) which has me kind of checking out A Pink but..yeah...with the girl groups I'm left a bit cold. In all languages, really. I prefer female soloists. Digging a bit deeper into Verbal Jint, who i'm really liking - and he partners with EVERYBODY so I'm always finding new people to check out. Brand Newjiq is it for this week, I guess...other than waiting VERY impatiently for Geu XX from GD, of course.

Watching. Oh, watching. What am I NOT watching? Um...Haeundae Lovers and May Queen. That's about it, and I'll get to them eventually.

High on the list of watching and loving: Gaksital, Arang, Answer Me 1997, Rich Man Poor Woman. Sprout didn't air this week. Liking quite a lot: Faith Enjoying enough to keep going: TTBY, Thousandth Man Just started and gonna be crack: Five Fingers

Okay chickies, gotta jet. I'll check back in because you know I gotta comment on stuff...but work assignments have changed recently and I'm trying to wrap my head around a few projects where I kinda have to hit the ground running, and this girl does NOT stumble if she can help it.

Cher, Cher, Cher - I am DYING to get caught up with you. I'll send you a DM with my email at some point today.

She is in all ways adorable, and quite the little actress. I won't even qualify it as 'for an idol'. She's doing a great job, and so is Seo In Guk. They all are, really. I have such fondness for this show, and I know I miss HALF the 'in jokes' and nostalgia bits because that's not my history, and even if I lived in Korea I was in my mid-30s in 1997. If I'm this nuts about the quality of this show, what must it be like for Korean viewers? I guess it's like That '70s Show, maybe? Because that show...man. I was a teen in the 70s. I had some of those exact shirts or pants, I listened to that music...we had some of that furniture. I know the WALLPAPER, you know what I mean? It's gotta be like that.

AM 1997 is the show I run to watch. The cast, the writers, etc, have all done a fantastic job.

Seo In Guk is stellar as well.

Hah, I'm going to see Cheap Trick tomorrow, so that'll be my time travel back to the day experience for me.

CHEAP TRICK!!!!!! My other obsession!!! It's been a running joke with anyone born in the Chicago Area that as soon as you're born, you're issued a Cheap Trick, Styx and REO Speedwagon album before you leave the hospital. :P

I've attended 107 shows since 1976 (with my 100th in Japan at the 30th Anniversary of their Budokan show in 2008). Several of my friends will be at that show too, so you're in good company. :)

Have fun and tell the boys that 'Apple Girl' says howdy -- I'll see them again in LA later this year!!

cherkell~

Wow, you are a fan! It should be fun. Southern Culture On The Skids opens for them.

The first time I saw Cheap Trick was with Blue Oyster Cult and Kiss. That was approx 35 years +/- a few years ago.

Good Morning JoAnne! I'm loving AM1977 and Jung Eun Ji also. I wish I did know more of the music references, but I just try to relate to how it was back int he day for me!

Love Shin So Yool, too. Her character can be annoying, but there's something about her cute little pout....and who didn't know a couple kind of like that in high school?

Loved Episode 11 + can't wait for the next one. But one question - did anyone think it was a little out of character for the teacher to become such a slob for a bit? That kind of threw me.

Love RMPW, too. And gotta say, I really like the shorter episodes of these two shows.

Happy Weekend!

I love AM 1997! It is just freakin adorable! I'm from the wrong age group and country to have lived it but some things are universal. :)

@JoAnne
We must be about the same age because I would see episodes (especially the first season) of That 70's Show, and just howl! We (at least where I grew up) were those people! :)

JoAnne,
I just had to say that I really admire you for being able to work from home - and in you PJs, too! Whenever I work from home I need to at least dress up to concentrate on the job to be done.

I have to take a shower and wash my hair but pjs or sweats are comfy. Today will be an easy day most of my project contacts are either done for the day (ex-US) or taking a vacation day (in-US) and MY list mostly includes reading study documentation so I understand the existing setup. Very low interaction level and plenty of opportunity for OT!

0

it's a blue moon. I seriously don't want to know what happens in Arang's world on a blue moon.

0

A blue moon means we USAers can wash our hair twice this month, right? Yeah!

I'm sorry, but dirty hair, which is a huge no no in my book, always reminds me of KSN in City Hall. All I kept thinking the whole time was YUK!

0

Yes, you USAers can wash your hair twice - or do you possibly need to dye it blue?! In any case, sounds like over-indulgence to me!

0

Unni, we ALL know that FF was going to be your crack. That's a pure given you makjang queen you!

Happy Friday to all my fellow drama addicts. Am I the only one who keeps telling myself my drama watching schedule will get easier, but keep finding more to watch?!

By the way, I was sad to hear that Ivoire isn't moving to Minnesota, because that is where I live, and I have been seriously thinking of starting a Kdrama club, where we get together and slam down a little soju once in while. For now I am so thankful to meet you all at Dramabeans.
