Jang Dong-gun and Kim Haneul confirm A Gentleman’s Dignity

So the contracts have been signed and statements have been made: Jang Dong-gun (Warrior’s Way) and Kim Haneul (Blind) have signed on to star in upcoming SBS weekend drama A Gentleman’s Dignity, the highly anticipated drama from the team behind Secret Garden and Lovers in Paris — PD Shin Woo-chul and writer Kim Eun-sook. I’m ecstatic about Jang Dong-gun returning to dramaland and I like Kim Haneul; the big question mark and potential wrench in the works for me is the story, since this writer tends to be divisive, which is putting it mildly.

The drama has been described as a 40-something male version of Sex and the City, but I’m so tired of that description because it tells me nothing other than it being guy-centric (a potentially happy change) and let’s face it, is probably completely inaccurate anyway. Thankfully we have the first little nuggets of story released: Kim Haneul will play a high school ethics teacher (which seems like an extremely specified field for high school, but whatever) named Song Yi-soo, who isn’t exactly rough or mean, but is stern and determined. She’s also an amateur baseball umpire on the side. That’s random. Ethics and baseball. Sure, why not.

Jang Dong-gun plays Kim Do-jin, successful chief architect, known mostly for his incendiary vicious tongue. Oh noes. The one-line character description is that he’s an asshole? Why, dramaverse, why? Is it basically Secret Garden minus the whimsy? Okay, his friends Kim Min-jong and Kim Suro had better be awesome, ’cause if it just stars a quartet of assholes, I’m gonna have a hard time finding the dignity in all this.

The concept is described as both a romantic-comedy and romantic-melodrama about love and loss. (Pick a lane or you’ll cause a traffic accident, I say.) It centers around four men who have crossed north of forty and feel like nothing in the world can captivate them anymore, and four women who miss the faint memory of first love’s excitement.

Jang Dong-gun: “My movie schedule in China made it a difficult situation, but because of the effort and kindness of the producers we were able to negotiate, and more than anything, I decided on the project because of my confidence in the producers.” Kim Haneul: “I’m so happy to be reunited with writer Kim Eun-sook and director Shin Woo-chul after On Air.”

A Gentleman’s Dignity will air on weekends in May on SBS.

I always laugh at the dramas' so-called descriptions. Aren't they almost always inaccurate in the funniest way! xP

Jang Dong Gun, YAY.
Kim Ha Neul, NAY.

I'd rather see Lee Na Young. I'll judge when the poster comes out. Hopefully, it's not identical to Sex and the City with all the flashing lights.

ditto. I am secretly praying that a Dramagod will swap the roles of Kim Haneul & Ha Jiwon for their respective up-coming dramas. Jang Donggun & Ha Jiwon for this and Lee Seunggi & Kim Haneul for The King;- it just seems so, so fitting in my world >.<

Ok. I suppose i'm doomed to wait the real thing on screen before judging because i'm so-so about Kim Ha Neul, but there is one minor thing bugging me. No, not the assholery ( it can be utterly fun isn't it Kim Joo Won ? )... But the baseball ingredient : How many dramas had baseball in it for the last 3 months ? Are women so in love with that sport in korea, or is it a particular way to convey strength for a character ? ( Or do they sponsor dramaland ?? ). I'm so tired of that, just want something new.
I love the ethic teacher fact : And it would be even more fun if the woman is good in theory but completely sucks when using it for her life.
I agree with the " pick a lane " and i pray so they would choose rom-com one.

Next year, the girls will be the sporty ones, participating in synchronized swimming. They'd be on the same team but then they would fall the same guy and try to drown each other. Just wait, Mystisith.

I'm interested in Kim Ha-neul's work but I'm still undecided about this one.

Nothing like team work, that's what i say. And nothing scarier than a cheated woman. Han river, winter, a tragic accident. Body still missing.

Titles can be so misleading. I thought this was about a man who is very dignified, turns out he's anything but that. They should just name this "An Assholey Gentleman".

Don't be so hard on them, Secret Garden was fun, no? Plus I can totally see the witty comments coming in to just bite at life and laugh about it.

Granted, i'm a bit grumpy here. Must be the cold.
And that writer used ( i dare say deconstructed :) ) the clichés so well in SeGa. Please dramagods, let this be fun !

I was hoping for Kim So Yeon but since she's busy promoting Coffee, Kim Ha Neul will be just fine.

So, hoping that this JDG and KHN combination will be impressive since JDG is making his first comeback in TV.

Is it me or does the storyline seems a little similar to Secret Garden. I mean we've got a strict teacher and a guy who has that jerk aura to him?

Well, whatever it is, this is a must-watch on my list.

On a random note, I did find KHN to be cute on 1N2D. She's pretty bubbly and funny.

You're my pet was dreadful. My thoughts exactly. I'm not very excited about her after watching that mess.

I want to say the You're My Pet mess wasn't her fault, but as much as there was bad writing in that film, the way she played her character was still uninspiring.

The only other thing I have seen her in is My Tutor Friend, which I'm not a fan of either.

Well that's some star power, but screw the romance, there better be some epic bromance going on in this drama.

"cause if it just stars a quartet of assholes, I’m gonna have a hard time finding the dignity in all this."
LMFAO...I love you GF!!!
SIGH...so they basically described the male lead of every Kim Eun Sook drama ever in that one line...and KHN's character also seems very similar to her character on On Air...that's not a good sign for me....I love these actors...but I am done sitting through bad or boring dramas for my favorite stars..We'll see....I mean it is Jang Dong Gun;s come back drama in like forever

To be honest if I picture them together it doesn't work for me somehow. Well let's wait and see though I wished for someone else than KHN. I don't know even though I liked her in 1N2D I could never get through her works.

I'm both excited and afraid for this drama. Excited cause GAAAAH it's Jang Dong-gun's project after many, many, many years. And I'm afraid cause I'm not a fan of either Secret Garden and Lovers in Paris.

And oh no. Why does the lead male always has to be an ass?? Sheesh.

And before I end my comment, the name Song Yi-soo sure brings some sad memories. >.<
