The Script Doctor is in: Myung-wol the Spy

girlfriday: Wait is KBS really going to recast a different actress in the SAME role??

javabeans: That’s DUMB. I understand why they’d consider it, but it’s lame.

girlfriday: It is so stupid. Arrrgh. Are they going to go with some crazy plastic surgery story, or are all the characters going to PRETEND that they don’t notice?

javabeans: This ain’t All My Children. What actress is going to want to take the role? Will Eric just have to react in exactly the same way that he would with a different actress?

girlfriday: Seriously. It’s all kinds of crazy.

javabeans: I get that they’re in emergency mode, but they have a week to rework the story and shoot the next episodes. Given that they were only 40% done with shooting Episodes 11 and 12 on a Friday night before the whole kerfuffle went down, I think this is do-able.

girlfriday: Time to call in the Script Doctor.

javabeans: So! If we were writing the rest of this drama, what would we do?

girlfriday: Kill her.

javabeans: And then?

girlfriday: I dunno. I only thought that far because the last scene we saw was the fake-shootout-turned-real.

javabeans: She could be rushed to the hospital in intensive condition.

girlfriday: With a body double like Bad Guy.

javabeans: And she dies in the hospital. But then the body disappears. Dun-dun-dun! WTF? Is she dead or is it a North Korean cover-up so her cover isn’t blown?

girlfriday: The problem is, with no heroine to be the action-hero spy, we either need Ryu to step into her place (but then what of the romance?) or Kang-woo to reveal himself as a super-secret agent.

javabeans: Both! I think Ryu should fall for the cute South Korean spy who should have been tailing Kang-woo all these episodes but got lazy.

girlfriday: Ha. Maybe her daddy managed to ground her.

javabeans: Oh I know! Kang-woo does something suspicious, only to reveal that Da-hae has actually been tailing him this whole time, but she was so good she went unnoticed. Retroactive continuity FTW. And yes, Kang-woo should be “activated” as an agent. He’s been in sleeper mode, a la Ok-soon and Hee-bok at the beginning.

girlfriday: Or maybe, he’s a sleeper-sleeper agent, as in has to be subconsciously triggered to realize that he IS a spy!

javabeans: Oh, like his chip hasn’t been switched on yet?

girlfriday: Yeah, yeah. That would explain his lightning quick reflexes, but cowardly demeanor.

javabeans: Who does Kang-woo work for?

girlfriday: The Goblin?

javabeans: Who is his father?

girlfriday: Oooh! Ooooh!

javabeans: Oh! As he knows it, the Goblin killed his father. But it turns out the Goblin IS his father, and he didn’t die.

girlfriday: He had to fake his own death, in order to go into hiding…. because he knows something deadly.

javabeans: About the books and the havoc they would wreak. He tampered with the books so they could never be assembled.

girlfriday: Yes, maybe he was the one who first put them together, and realized the political turmoil they would bring, and vowed to destroy them for good. But then he got intercepted somehow, and three of them got out. So he’s still got the last one. Or is my math wrong?

javabeans: Honestly, I’m not entirely certain the drama’s math is correct on that one. In any case, Chairman Joo ruined his plans.

girlfriday: And took a leg!

javabeans: Like City Hunter?

girlfriday: Yes. Maximum Daddy drama.

javabeans: Now Kang-woo finds out Chairman Joo is hunting down the Goblin as well, and he has to beat that ticking clock to get to him first. Wait, we need to iron out some backstory. If Kang-woo’s working for Goblin, he had to be trained in the first place, right? Before he was “put to sleep”?

girlfriday: He could have been trained by his dad when he was a child, like Sydney Bristow style.

javabeans: But we know he wasn’t, at least not the way we’ve seen it. The most likely time or opportunity would have been after Chairman Joo took him in, which suggests that at one point Joo and Goblin were partners.

girlfriday: So then maybe Dad laid the foundation, but then his former partner Joo trained him and put him to sleep, after feeding him false information about the Goblin and whatnot… Er, does this make any sense?

javabeans: It could. We just need to connect a few more dots. For instance, what exactly is the shocking secret of the damn books? We need a big reveal, like in Runaway when we find out what Melgidec needs from Jin-yi and the origin of the gold. (Wait, what was the secret of Rambaldi anyway?)

girlfriday: I was just thinking that. Like some crazy Rambaldi secret. I think it was some kind of bio terror, like turning people into zombies in whatever radius of the big red ball (yeah, WTF). I don’t think we have to go into zombie territory.

javabeans: Please let’s not. No zombies or vampires.

girlfriday: It could just be a reinterpretation of a known fact in history, something pivotal to both North and South. Uh….

javabeans: This is a farce, right? You know what would be hilarious, is if in the end it turns out to be some big misunderstanding. It’s the work of a Baekje-era prankster.

girlfriday: HA. A centuries-old fuck you?

javabeans: A wild goose chase of the most epic order.

girlfriday: Okay, I’m totally onboard with that.

javabeans: Right? It totally fits the tone of the show, more than the emphasis on the book as a huge, peninsula-transforming game-changer. Meanwhile, Kang-woo guesses that Myung-wol isn’t dead either. She was taken, and he has to save her.

girlfriday: Or, he does think she’s dead, and he just goes crazy with revenge.

javabeans: I want him to team up with Ryu somehow.

girlfriday: Because they both love her. So that works. Begrudging partnership to avenge the death of the woman… they both loved. Ha.

javabeans: What’s our endgame? How would our finale wrap up? I would want it to go out on a comic note.

girlfriday: I’d want the whole thing to go back to its original farcical tone, especially if they’re going to even try continuing this with no heroine.

javabeans: What if… the North Korean general’s daughter reads the reports of Kang-woo falling for Myung-wol and flies into super angry-fangirl mode, and sneaks into South Korea? To cover up for it, the general blames it on the South. So the situation escalates because the North is like, the South has kidnapped one of our own! We must retaliate!

girlfriday: Haha. So basically it escalates into war, and Kang-woo is the only one who can stop it!

javabeans: YES. It’s like City Hunter, only dumber and dopier.

girlfriday: The dim half-cousin.

javabeans: The North kidnaps In-ah in retaliation, but the South is like, “Eh, you can keep her.” And SHE becomes their big Hallyu-of-the-North star!

girlfriday: Hahaha. Yes, please!

javabeans: Then they find out the books are a big ol’ prank, and toss them aside carelessly. After all that angst.

girlfriday: And then, Kang-woo and Ryu ride off into the sunset together?

javabeans: Bickering into the sunset.

girlfriday: Famous last words: Kang-woo: “Yunno, you’re not half-bad-looking. Can you act?” Ryu: “This is my sad face. This is my angry face. This is my happy face.”

javabeans: Fin.

Seriously, why are you both not scriptwriters for any dramas??

The drama has so much drama it's making MAD! Argh! Can't a real SPY (NSA or someone) bring Han Ye Seul back to where she's supposed to be?! I pity Eric, I pity everyone (maybe, less to the PD, since he's also responsible for not managing the film schedules well) Especially, ERIC--I mean, he had to pull off those layers of emotions from Kang Woo's which he nailed everytime. Too bad they didn't name the drama HALLYU STAR KANG WOO.

*urgh!* HAN- YE- SEUL!!!!

After episode 10, I've invested so much--
So, SCRIPT DOCTORS, please please save this drama!!!

Has this happened before to other dramas --- the lead actor walks off mid shooting?

The real life drama is better than the fictional drama, gosh, KBS should milk this situation as much as they can and drag it out as long as they can, so they can buy more time for the marine police drama (gosh I forgot it's name, something Greek sounding).

From what I've read it has not happened before...only in the case of an accident, or something very serious. I guess she made a statement this evening in L.A. and said it was over production issues. :/
Idol drama on kdramas has been tamer than this! Very unfortunate for the show.

Javabeans and Girlfriday, you guys crack me up! I love your story of how Myung-wol the Spy should end. And I don't get the book stuff either. And what IS Kang-woo? Maybe he's a US spy or something? And who is this Goblin person?

I hope KBS gets things straight with Han Ye-seul. I like her and can't imagine anyone else as Myung-wol. I hope she comes back. I also think she's being petty and selfish in this whole issue. I don't want a time jump in the middle of the series, that's just sloppy work.

But what ever happens, I won't give up on Myung-wol the spy.

I'm only on episode 4 and honestly, the drama in general is just WEIRD but good weird. Han Ye Seul is surprisingly addictive and it's too bad they have issues. The beginning of your convo is hilarious though.

I don't know what they'll do but they can do a FACE OFF thing. I think most of us are open to it and want this Kdrama to just follow through with or without Han Ye Seul.

Y'know.... Kim Tae Hee kinda looks like her.... MAYBE WE COULD SAY THAT AFTER LAST EPISODE WHERE SHE SHOT HERSELF IN THE HEAD, IT ENDED UP MAKING HER HAVE TO GET PLASTIC SURGERY AND THENNN....
LOLLLLLLLLZ.
Or we can just kill off Myung Wol (nevermind that she's the main character of the titular drama) and ship In Ah off to North Korea where they dump her because she's a bad actress with a diva attitude and therefore non-superstar material. Then the North Korean generals decide to have a change of plans and assign RYU to seduce and marry Kang Woo and bring him over to "the dark side," LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLLLLLLL.
And then we end with Ryu and Kang Woo falling deeply in life but denying their near-fatal attraction to each other. Kang Woo thinks he's "bent," and has the hardest time dealing with his newfound attraction that has in reality been there all along (he was only thinking of Myung Wol before because he couldn't come to terms with his LUVVVVV for his "rival" ). However, in the end, he doesn't care whether Ryu is "a man or an alien," and proceeds to chase after Ryu. However, it turns out that Ryu is actually a woman and has been disguised as a man all along. Then they run off bickering like an old married couple off into the sunset~♥

You know what, I thought the exact same thing! Kim Tae Hae is the only actress who I think can replace her and appease us fans. I was trying to think of other actresses who could step into her shoes, but no one came to mind...she's got a small delicate face and most kor actresses have broader faces. Yoona, maybe? But somehow can't imagine Yoona doing all that vigorous spy stuff and looking mean. Han Ye Seul kicked ass looking mean....LOL....I'm laughing just thinking of her running about doing the stabbing/rolling/kicking thing in ep 11....but feeling so sad....just won't be the same without her....Ye Seul come backkkkkkk

As much as I support Eric, I refuse to follow the craziness that is this drama any longer if the main actress is switched. I understand that producers have been put in a tough spot, but as a fan of the show and fan of the main pair's chemistry, I cannot support the show with this kind of disconnect that is bound to happen with the sudden actress switch.

I'm hoping that the production is just bluffing in order to get Han Ye Seul back on the set.

here are my possible script salvage for this drama.

1. han yeseul's character gets a full face plastic surgery into another person, to maintain the same character.

2. they can make han yeseul's character pretend that she isn't the real myung wol but another spy cover up. another actress can take the myungwol identity instead.

3. myung wol has a long lost sister, who uses the same name as her.

Just kill her off, put her in a coma, kidnapp her. Pls dun do that actress replacement thing, we are not fools you know.

I think this show (along with a few shitty ones earlier) has totally cured my addiction to kdrama.

Let's just do a meta of a meta!

HYS dies because the bullet in the gun was exchanged for a real one! KW is so devastated that he tries to take his life at home while wearing the brooding hood. He is saved however by Ryu who arrives just in time. KW wakes up with amnesia in North Korea where Ryu has taken him and convinces him that he is actually a North Korean sleeper agent.

Then they both get a mission to retrieve In-ah who is revealed to be the missing sister of HMW. Apparently, she holds the secret of the 4 books. Agent KW pretends to be topstar KW to seduce In-ah. When KW gets all 4 books, he regains his memories and learns that it is actually a family tree book that can trace all the connections between South and North Koreans. He discovers that In-ah and HMW are actually his sisters so he finally kills himself for real.

In-ah migrates to North Korea after learning that she can be the best actress in that country considering that no one really knows how to act there. But she acts so badly that her first multi-billion budgeted movie totally shames North Korea so she is sentenced to death.

After using the 4 books that KW left behind, Ryu learns that he is actually the long-lost brother of Eric Mun (not KW) and returns to South Korea and debuts as the new member of SHINHWA for their comeback. The series ends with a live concert performance of SHINHWA with Ryu who becomes the new top star. THE END.

I'm so upset. If she doesn't comeback I'm not gonna watch it anymore. If they get rid of her through death it would change the entire tone of the show.

I don't know what truly happened on the set so I won't say anything about that. I just know HYS has to say something, do something so that her fans will understand. She can't hide out forever.

I think somebody said she went to USA. Does she have family here? Maybe something personal happened? IDK.

I'm curious what was going on in Ye Seul's head the entire time she was filming that last ep. Had she already made up her mind then that she wasn't going to go on filming after Ep 10? Or did she pack and leave on a spur-of-the-moment thing? In that climactic gun scene, Eric beseeched her, "Stay with me....why can't you stay? I forgive you....I've forgiven you!" When she shook her head, and said tearfully, "Don't forgive me" was she thinking of the supreme irony of all those lines?

Many fans, like me, are uncomfortable with the idea of having another actress step into Ye Seul's shoes. Well, I've got the perfect solution:just get an expert to make a really really good mask of Ye Seul, and glue it on some girl's face. Just get a girl of similar height and build to Ye Seul. In fact, a few girls could take turns being Ye Seul with the mask on. That way, all the Ye Seuls would be happy, and could get lots of rest. We could have Morning Ye Seul, Afternoon Ye Seul, Night Ye Seul and Post-Midnight Ye Seul. As for the different voices coming out of "Myung Wol", they could just say the head injury did things to her vocal chords, making her voice deep one minute, and squeaky the next. Or that she developed a multiple personality disorder after the trauma of being shot. Isn't that a fantastic idea?

I feel bad for Eric. He was first planning to do Poseidon after he was released from army. Production got multiple problems and so on, and he dropped (as everybody else, btw). He got into Spy, that was supposed to be the best drama of the year - even better than the greatest love (how awesome was the original premise). And now Poseidon is steadily in, while Spy's production is in danger. I was supporting Han Ye Seul's actions. However, WTF is she doing now?! I can understand her rebel against working schedule, but she can't just leave. She has a CONTRACT and responsibilty in front of her co-stars. If the production can't continue with love-line, make action-movie a-la City Hunter and Mixed Invesitigation Agency wtih Ryu and Kang on the ends!

I think this is the perfect opportunity to turn In Ah into the surprise hero of the story. Myung Wol is in a coma, unable to complete her mission of seducing Kang Woo and bringing him back to Korea. Orders are sent from the top that Hee Bok and Ok Soon are to bring Kang Woo to the North by force. Except that they bungle it and that South Korean officer (I can't remember her name) catches wind of what's going on...

The South Korean agents convince In Ah that in order to protect her man and serve her country she must go undercover in the North. Her cover story is that she has come to work for the N. Korean drama industry (the original plan for Kang Woo), but in reality her mission is to seduce and turn a certain smoldery-eyed Northern agent...

My solution:
Kang Woo wakes up from an EXTREMELY vivid dream. It turns out everything that happened in the previous episodes is a dream. How does this explain the other characters' presence in his dream? Because people you know often appear in your dreams! And this drama is so cooky that it could be a dream.

(But it all seemed so real! Well that's because it's actually his life in an alternate universe. <HAHA just had to include the alternate universe thing)

Kang Woo looks up, kinda expecting Myung Wol to be there, but instead...there's a different bodyguard. (aka the new replacement actress. Not Myung-Wol--instead it would be an entirely new character) Kang Woo's dream felt so real that he starts making connections between the dream and his real life. When the real bodyguard goes out with Ryu (Yes, because Ryu deserves an equal chance this time around) he freaks out because it's just like what happened in his dream.

He decides to make sure that his dream won't really happen...and tries to kick out the bodyguard. Kang Woo can't fire her, because she actually came from an elite bodyguard agency, and is invaluable to his safety.

So instead he starts bullying her, (like he did to Myung Wol) either expecting her to meekly obey orders or quit. But she's different--she's spunky and doesn't take his crap.

AND THEN FOR SOME REASON, we'll get Ryu to become his bodyguard too, so all three of them can live together in his house.

Episode 11

Myung-wol: Don't forgive me. (Points the gun to her temple and pulls the trigger, the force of the explosive charge of the blank knocks her to the ground, rendering her unconscious.)

Kang-woo rushes to Myung-wol's side and sees blood coming out of the side of her head.

Kang-woo: Myung-wol! (Cradles her head in his arms, tears running down his face). Myung-wol!

Kang-woo quickly removes his jacket and wraps it around Myung-wol. He lifts her up and pushes through the crowd that had gathered around them. He carries her out of the film set and runs towards the parking lot. Ryu, In-ah, and some of film crew chases after them. Kang-woo puts Myung-wol in his car's front passenger seat and straps her in. He jumps in the car, and speeds off towards the hospital.

Kang-woo: (driving, looks at Myung-wol) Myung-wol! Don't die! I love.. (notices something on the left side of Myung-wol's neck; it looks like a piece of loose skin. He pulls at it and it came off. He examines it.) What the? Latex?

He pulls the car to the side of the road and it screeches to a halt. He puts the car's blinkers on. He hovers over Myung-wol and starts peeling off more of the latex skin. When it's almost completely off, he stares at her face. It's ... LEE MIN-JUNG. (Mission Impossible theme plays in a crescendo.)

She slowly stirs awake.

Honestly I think this is a good opportunity for the show to make a good turn, even though the odds are against them. At least we won't be getting the same story repeating itself for the duration of 9 episodes.
