Myung-wol the Spy: Episode 13

This show makes my blood boil. It’s not necessarily always a bad thing, since it means I’m that invested in the characters. But when they do stupid, assy things, it makes me tear my hair out. Once in love, Kang-woo is the bleeding heart kind of hero, which means that the brokenhearted version of him is a dark and twisted black hole of pain. It’s bad. Like Spike without a soul kind of bad. There’s gonna be some swearing in this recap… Er, more swearing than usual.

EPISODE 13 RECAP

Kang-woo sees Myung-wol sneak in and take the goddamn book of mystical secrets, breaking his heart into little bits all over that diamond ring in his hand. Worst timing ever for a B&E.

He does the scariest thing – okay maybe only for me because my dad used to do this when I tried to sneak in and out of the house – he sits on the couch in the dark and flips on the lights just as she’s about to walk out.

She quickly puts the book behind her back and makes up an excuse about having to run off and see her parents, as his heart sinks further to catch her knee-deep in lies. She manages to get out, and stops to look at the book regretfully.

At the same time, Kang-woo sits and stares at the ring, twisting the knife in his own heart. Then he gets up and suddenly reaches under the piano… where he’s stashed the REAL book! Ooooh, smartypants. No wait, that means she’s got the wrong book! How will she rescue Ryu now? Aaaargh, I’m so torn.

He talks to it as if wanting it to answer back, “She must have a reason. There must be a reason…” Aw, he wants to trust her. His desperation, his desire to cling to his trust – it totally makes up for the assy denial earlier.

Myung-wol brings the book to Chairman Joo, asking why he’s so interested in these books, and if he has anything to do with Kang-woo’s father’s death. He turns the same question on her, wondering why she and Ryu are after the same books, and who they really are.

He snidely congratulates her friendship with Ryu, saying that it must be something special if she’s willing to betray the man she loves. Ouch. That stabs her right where it hurts. He digs a little further, adding that poor Kang-woo knows nothing and trusts her completely.

She gives up the book after asking for his word to hand over Ryu, and he thankfully doesn’t have an expert on hand to tell him that it’s a fake. Only once outside, he tells his minions to kill Ryu anyway since they confiscated the two books he had, and no longer need him.

Myung-wol waits and follows them to Ryu. Wait, so then why did she do the exchange in the first place? What did she gain from that? Sigh. I suppose I should just be thankful she only gave up the dummy book in the useless exchange in which she gained nothing. Bah.

The minions move Ryu outside (because killing him in the basement isn’t public enough) and In-ah happens upon the scene. He manages to hulk out of his ropes and grab her as a hostage.

He whispers, “I’m sorry. And thank you,” before flinging her at the baddies and running off. They give chase, but Myung-wol arrives on her bike to speed him away to safety.

Chairman Joo declares that having the books is not enough. Ryu knows too much, and needs to be found and killed. Again.

Meanwhile In-ah is all spun around from her hostage moment, only she’s mostly attracted, not scared. Ha. She admits that Ryu was pretty badass, and then catches herself and tries to snap out of it.

Myung-wol brings Ryu to her apartment and he tries to leave, not wanting to put her in more danger. But she tells him that he’s in no condition to move, and the other agents know nothing of this mission, which means it’s safest to stay with her.

She puts his arm around her and they walk in, which is the scene that Kang-woo watches from his car across the street. Oh dear, oh dear. That looks bad from far away. His eyes narrow, “For that guy? Lying to me… for him?”

Upstairs, Myung-wol treats Ryu’s wounds and frets over his condition. He tries to push her hand away because it clearly breaks his heart to even be near her, and he apologizes for bringing her into this mess.

She tells him that he’s being ridiculous, since to her he’s not only a comrade, but family. She says that after her father died, he became just like a father to her. He sighs as he repeats her words: “Like family… A father… That’s what I am to you.”

AW. It’s so heartbreaking when he says it, the same words, but from him, meaning: so I will never be the man you love.

She tries to pretend not to understand his meaning, rambling on about how much she respects him, and he raises his hand slowly up to her face. She dodges away from it before it gets too awkward, and leaves him hanging.

Just then, Kang-woo calls, wanting to know where she went, and she tells him that it was getting too late so she just came home. He tells her that’s great, since he’s just outside her door. Uh-oh.

Panic sets in as Kang-woo starts pounding on the door and shouting for her to open up. She comes to the door and he storms past her, looking for signs of Ryu. He’s hiding in the closet, which Kang-woo can probably guess, but he doesn’t search the place or anything.

He notes some bloody bandages sticking out of a drawer though, which lines up with Ryu’s limping walk up to the apartment. I’m really curious how all of this adds up in Kang-woo’s head.

Myung-wol tries to convince him to go out for something to eat, but he grabs her in a sudden hug. He tells her that he wants to stay here. Oh. Oh no. Are you doing this for Ryu’s benefit?

He pushes her up against the wall and tells her that he’s not leaving tonight, making his intentions clear. She tries to squirm free but he slams her up against the wall, pinning her hands up above her. Aaaaaugh, no Kang-woo, no!

He gets increasingly leery and threatening, and she finally has to push him off violently to get him to stop. And then he gets totally hurt at her rejection, as if he wasn’t just being completely egregiously WRONG just now.

What’s crazy about this whole ugly thing is that he’s doing it calculatingly to get a reaction out of her and Ryu, only he takes her rejection seriously. He’s acting a part, and yet he’s taking her rejection to heart because he can’t separate the two.

It’s as twisted as it sounds. It’s intentional, which both makes his actions better AND worse, because he’s setting himself up for a confirmation that she doesn’t love him, and never did. Because attacking a girl is really the best way to test that?

She chases him downstairs and asks him not to misunderstand. He asks if she has anything she wants to tell him. Caught off guard, she shakes her head and he sneers, almost at himself for trusting her, and at her for confirming his suspicions. Go catch him! Tell him the truth! Graaaaaaar.

He comes home to his big romantic proposal setting, now just a cruel reminder of his broken heart. He throws the ring, screaming, “What is he? What is he to you?!” Ugh, I do feel bad for him that he’s so twisted around that he can’t see straight. But what happened to that trust you were clinging to? Couldn’t it have lasted a little longer, to keep you from going straight back to assyville?

Hee-bok and Ok-soon hear of Dae-kang’s night spent begrudgingly setting the stage for Kang-woo’s proposal, and they get all excited at the thought of finally returning to their homeland, preparing speeches and souvenirs.

But Dae-kang kills their short-lived joy with news that he just spent the morning cleaning up the whole thing since the proposal’s been scrapped. They stare dumbfounded. Yeah, a lot can happen in a night.

Kang-woo picks Myung-wol up in the morning, pretending that everything is fine. See, this is why you’re all bitter and angry and inappropriately violent. Just confront her already. Repression leads to heart attacks and jackass behavior. She notes his coldness and asks if he’s still mad, which he denies. Guh.

He asks if she had someone over last night, and she says no. He asks if she noticed anyone coming or going in his house, since that book he told her about has gone missing. She says no. What’s with the constantly trying to trap her in lies but secretly hoping she doesn’t lie?

His agent tells him that he’s got a good shot at reviving his career even without Chairman Joo’s backing, and is surprised at his nonchalant attitude, half-listening and telling her to pick his next project for him.

He tells Myung-wol he wants to be alone and leaves without her, and she in turn ends up as distracted as he is, knowing that something is clearly amiss. For a spy you really lack some basic reasoning skills. Those questions in the car aren’t a dead giveaway?

Kang-woo calls In-ah out for coffee, and she feigns being so put out by it, then hilariously follows it up with a request for a date. He asks her about Ryu, and she asks if he died.

For some crazy reason, he doesn’t press her on her reason for asking if he DIED, and wonders how he came to work for Chairman Joo. She doesn’t know either, but does remember that the first time she met Ryu wasn’t when he came to work for Grandpa; it was in Singapore.

The dots, they are a-connectin’!

He asks if it seemed like Ryu and Myung-wol knew each other back then, and she doesn’t think so. But she does know that Ryu is interested in that musty old book that Kang-woo bought at auction.

She wonders again if that’s why he’s having trouble with Grandpa, but brushes it off as an afterthought. She lights up thinking that something’s finally causing a rift between Kang-woo and Myung-wol, happy that he’s at last beginning to suspect her.

Kang-woo rushes home to go through the other versions of the Singapore showcase footage. He finally comes across one camera angle that catches both Ryu and Myung-wol together in the audience.

He freezes it in shock. “Then the two of you… for the book… was it like that?”

Aw, you can’t argue that it’s not true, but it’s not the whole truth.

Ryu wakes up in Myung-wol’s apartment, where she’s watching over him. He can tell something’s weighing on her, and asks if it’s because of the book, if she really feels that badly about betraying Kang-woo.

Myung-wol: He’s the person who accepted all of me. So much has happened, and yet he trusted me and accepted me in the end. When I think about that person being disappointed in me, and hurting because of me…
Ryu: I think he must be happy. Because he has someone who worries for him like that.

Kang-woo calls her over and she gets up to go, and Ryu grabs her arm. “Do you have to go?” AW.

Kang-woo waits on edge, and receives a text that she can’t come now and she’ll be by in the morning. Oh, I didn’t expect her to actually stay. Damn. Kang-woo stews, declaring that he was going to give her one last chance to explain, but she’s chosen to close that door.

Well, no, stupid. YOU are the one who’s arbitrarily deciding when to open and close that door, while she has no idea what you’re thinking. He tortures himself some more, staring at the freezeframe of the two of them in Singapore.

Ok-soon worries at her spy daughter’s condition and asks her if anything’s changed with Kang-woo. She can’t divulge anything about the books, so she just says that maybe she’s projecting the weirdness. Ok-soon tells her about the almost-proposal, and suggests that she change up her look today.

Meanwhile Kang-woo tasks Dae-kang with something new – spying on Myung-wol’s parents and reporting back with what they talk about. I guess it’s a good thing that Dae-kang is less than perceptive?

Myung-wol arrives in a new dress, and Kang-woo tellingly puts his sunglasses on as soon as she walks in. And on with the sunglasses, he puts on the happy boyfriend act, walking hand-in-hand and buying her a separate cell phone just for his calls.

He pours on the gifts and puts on a big show for the public, which gets her feeling guilty of course. She tells him that she’s sorry, just in general, and he tells her to enjoy it all, since there’s no telling how long it’ll last. Yikes. That’s not ominous or anything.

In-ah continues to obsess over the headlines about the happy couple, and attempts to convince her assistant to come back to the fold. She gets soundly rejected, which is neither here nor there, but satisfying to watch.

Dae-kang begins his spy mission, and when he overhears Hee-bok talk about orders from above, he wonders what “above” could mean… and decides on Heaven. Pfffft.

He wonders if Hee-bok is talking about death, and then comes across a suitcase. He finds pictures of North Korea (for a trip, he assumes), a radio, and even a GUN, and he laughs at Hee-bok for keeping toy guns like a big kid. Sigh. Oh, simple obtuse Dae-kang.

Ryu is well enough to get out of bed, and angsts over a photo of Myung-wol by her bed. He hears someone breaking in and hides, and avoids being caught by Chairman Joo’s thugs, by hiding behind a door, but whatever.

He listens until they leave and opens the door to step out, running right into Kang-woo. Whoops.

He asks Myung-wol to pick up some dinner on her way over, and she arrives at Kang-woo’s house with dinner in hand, and finds him sitting on the couch… with Ryu. Uh…

Kang-woo plays dumb and says he invited Ryu to dinner since he’s been looking out for her, and says he thought she’d be happy about it since they’re friends. Well, you totally win Passive Aggressive Boyfriend of the Year.

They sit down to the most awkward dinner possible, and Kang-woo makes sure to hold her hand and act sweet, all the while asking pointed questions like when they first met.

He basically sounds like a crazy jealous boyfriend, which isn’t really untrue either, because as much as he’s feeling betrayed and duped, he’s still rabidly jealous that whatever the truth is, it has to do with this other guy.

Ryu asks if he’s jealous or worried, and challenges Kang-woo’s trust in Myung-wol. Kang-woo gets defensive and puts his arm around her to stake his claim in this increasingly ridiculous pissing contest, until she finally stands up to try and leave.

Kang-woo stops her and yells at her to stay, barking a command at her like a dog. Ryu gets fired up and tells him to stop, and the two are basically inches away from fists flying. Myung-wol tells them to stop and Ryu makes his exit.

She asks Kang-woo why he’s doing this, and he blows up at her words, “Reason? You’re asking me the reason I’m doing this?”

He storms upstairs, muttering to himself, “Do you really not know the reason?” At the same time, Ryu walks out and screams in frustration.

Chairman Joo finds that the book is a fake, and decides that they needn’t look for Ryu any longer, since they have a card to play.

Dae-kang reports on his big spy mission, and Kang-woo asks if there isn’t anything he found out about Myung-wol. Dae-kang complains that there’s nothing TO find, since it’s not like there are any pictures, any albums, any remnants of her childhood.

It dawns on Kang-woo that he never did get a straight story out of them about their family background, and decides to stop in for a visit. He asks the parents for a baby picture of Myung-wol, and Mom has to lie quickly that her birth father ran a bar and did nothing but drink and wreak havoc, and one day he lit the place on fire and everything burned.

While the story is plausible, there’s one major hitch: Myung-wol once told Kang-woo that her father was a soldier. He asks about it, and Mom sticks with her story that he was no soldier, just a drunk.

Kang-woo leaves more confused than ever. “The more I dig, there’s nothing that isn’t weird…” He decides to hire someone to run a background check.

He spends the afternoon feeding his angst with scotch, and In-ah shows up hoping to have him confirm that he finally suspects Myung-wol. She guesses correctly that he’s upset because things are going well between Myung-wol and Ryu.

Being In-ah, of course, means that this is all about her and if that’s going well, it means Kang-woo should come back to her. He tells her to buzz off, and she pouts that all she wishes is that he’d understand her heart a little.

Kang-woo: “I would like to know another person’s feelings. I want to live as that person’s heart, just for one day.” Aw, he heard you, but yours isn’t the heart he wants to understand.

Myung-wol waits outside Kang-woo’s place, calling him over and over. Someone walks up and surprises her…

Ryu begins a one-man plan to infiltrate Chairman Joo’s fortress and reclaim the books, only he gets interrupted by a message that Joo is holding Myung-wol captive. Ryu comes guns a-blazin’, but Myung-wol isn’t there, and Chairman Joo offers him a deal – the real version of the book in exchange for their freedom from him for good.

He tells Ryu that he knows about their true identities and will go public with his knowledge if he doesn’t bring him the real book.

But it turns out that he doesn’t have Myung-wol after all, because it was Kang-woo who arrived at the house first. She brings him inside, stumbling around like a drunk mess, and he calls out her name over and over.

“Do you love me?” She tells him that he knows she does. But he asks over and over, saying that he doesn’t know. Tears swirl around in his eyes as he hits rock bottom. He takes off his jacket.

“You love me?” He pulls her down onto the bed and hovers above her. “Then show me how much you love me.”

OH FUCK NO.

Myung-wol: Why are you doing this? You’re drunk.
Kang-woo: Why? You said you loved me. You said you loved me, so then why not? Why not?!
Myung-wol: Can’t you trust me?
Kang-woo: That’s right. I can’t. I can’t trust you. You said you loved me, so then why…? You say you love me, but why…? Why are you making it so difficult for me?
Myung-wol: What do I have to do to make you trust me? If I do this, will you trust me?

She starts to unbutton her blouse. Okay, here’s your moment, Kang-woo. You can turn this around. Get off of her. Get the fuck off, RIGHT NOW.

Kang-woo: “Show me your heart.” And he leans in for a kiss. Oh, HELL NO.

Oh gross. I don’t know who to be madder at right now. What the fuck is she doing? Aaaaaaaaargh. What, is she gonna sleep with him to convince him of her love? And don’t even get me started on Kang-woo. What’re you, gonna screw the doubt out of your brain? Aaaaaaaaaaack.

What the hell is wrong with you people?! Why are you turning sexy fun times into a sick and twisted abyss of emotional vengeance? Gah.

After they sleep together, Kang-woo holds her, whispering to himself: “I don’t know what I’m doing right now. I don’t know why I’m doing this to you. I’m really sorry. I’m sorry.” He closes his eyes.

Myung-wol opens her eyes, having heard his words. She thinks to herself: “I’m sorry. I’m really sorry.”

And this is the moment that Ryu chooses to break into Kang-woo’s place, looking for the book. He opens the door and comes upon what looks like a happy vignette and crumples to the ground in agony.

In the morning, Kang-woo watches Myung-wol sleep, and when she wakes up he teases her about snoring, drooling, and grinding her teeth. Wait, what’s with the happy? Did you people bump your heads together and lose your memories?

He tells her to stay in bed while he gets the mail and coffee, but as soon as he walks out, Ryu enters, having waited all night for Kang-woo to leave. She sits up in shock.

Kang-woo gets a phone call from the guy who did the background check on Myung-wol, and says that he sent the results by mail. He looks down and sees it in his hand with the morning mail.

He ponders it, and then decides all that matters is her heart, and throws it in the trash without opening it.

He heads toward the bedroom, but then stops short when he sees her standing upstairs, talking to Ryu. He hears Ryu say that the book she brought was a fake, and she tells him to leave before Kang-woo gets back.

He runs out to his car, stunned to realize that she’s still lying, and been lying this whole time. He drives away and she runs out after him.

Ryu finds the real book and takes it with him. She hesitates, and he cuts her off, telling her that he has no time for her feelings anymore, and storms out.

Myung-wol heads home in a daze, and then gets a call from Ok-soon, asking if something’s going wrong with Kang-woo. She says that Dae-kang confessed to being tasked with spying on her, and that Kang-woo recently hired a professional to run a background check on her.

Her lightbulb finally goes off, realizing that Kang-woo’s suspicious questions lately weren’t all random. For an undercover agent, you really are strangely trusting. She realizes that the last thing Kang-woo did before driving off was get the mail.

She rushes back to his house and rifles through the mail. She opens up the trash can where he had thrown away the file… but it’s empty.

His voice calls out behind her: “You must be looking for this.” He holds up the papers in his trembling hand, that show her records as being falsified.

Kang-woo: “You certainly fooled me well, all this time. Everything, all of it… was a lie. What’s the truth? You! Who are you? Tell me. Please, tell me. TELL ME!”

COMMENTS

I really didn’t expect this show to go so dark. The thing is, I want to hope that the show is not stupid enough to treat their sleeping together like that as any kind of good situation – Kang-woo is clearly drunk, and totally fucked up, and making stupid choices – he acknowledges it’s something to be sorry for right away. When the scene at night was followed up with apologies, albeit to themselves, I felt like the treatment of it stayed firmly in Mistake Territory (as in: I was wrong for doing this).

BUT… the morning after? Why are they all happy and shit? Like they forgot how totally twisted their night was? Please don’t tell me I’m supposed to read that as: it doesn’t matter why, but now that we’ve slept together it’s all roses?

And don’t even get me started on Myung-wol actually agreeing to sleep with him to “prove her love.” *VOMIT* What the fuck is that about? Sex proves a lot of things, like which organs are in working order, but it does not prove love. Certainly not in the way Kang-woo wants, for her to sex the doubt out of him. IT DOESN’T WORK THAT WAY.

My only consolation is that he discovers right away that it doesn’t work that way. And in the end it backfires on him completely – now it’s worse, and his black hole of despair is actually deeper than it was before. Now it’s turned into: “she slept with me to convince me that she loved me…to keep her cover” which is just a self-fulfilling prophecy of badness.

It’s pretty much the trajectory of Kang-woo’s entire spiral of doom in this episode. Everything ends up being the darker version of what it could have been because he twists it to prove that his worst fears are true. I’ll at least give Show props for showing a clear trajectory for Kang-woo into a hell of his own making, and for Eric’s portrayal of it. Sigh. I really hope this is rock bottom. Because if there’s another bottom under THIS bottom, I don’t know if I can take it, Show. I’d normally follow that up with advice on how to fix it, but I’m way too pissed at you right now. Go stand in the corner until Monday.

I have a few points to make.
1. It was not rape. I'm not saying I condone his actions but we all need to get our facts straight. She agreed to it because she loved him. End of story.
2. Did anyone actually notice that MW was most likely a virgin? She had not been in a relationship before this one and this indicates that this was her first time. It kind of makes the situation a little bit more twisted.
3. This has been mentioned before somewhere in the thread- but I would like to repeat that KW was a man who was sick of all the lies and contradictions and wanted to feel reassured that he was loved by the woman that he gave his whole career up for. He didn't know if anything was true anymore and- in an act of desperation- made a mistake. I do not agree with what he did in any way because it seems to me that it was emotional blackmail, but I can understand how this could happen. I am a woman if you were wondering and I completely agree that we should not all submit like that but MW was also desperate to prove that she did love him. Words were not enough in that situation and I think that sex can be as a way to show that you truly care about somebody- but it should not be the only way that you do.
4. I do not think the situation on the set is directly related to the script writing. There has been friction and the situation has shocked me but I do not think the writers would intentially write this to hurt HYS, they are front and foremost concerned with increasing ratings and pleasing the viewers- and not with petty revenge.
I would like to leave this with my opinion that their cover needs to be blown soon. I really hope the writers do not prolong KW's pain to fill more episodes. This whole situation could be resolved in two episodes max and after all this angst I can say that some lighthearted banter is needed! Well, I hope no-one reacts violently to my post and takes it upon themself to criticise me but if they want to- they can try.

It's still rape from my POV... and i do feel HYS is being bullied by the production team and her co-stars ... just look at the state she's in - still stressed, so pale .... tsk, tsk, tsk....

i have never found eric to be awesome or endearing or adorable (i watched super rookie, FYI) ... now i find him gross and creepy and distasteful ... i don't plan to watch this drama anymore ... much as I want to continue supporting HYS, i find eric just too gross for comfort.

um, let's not mix eric up with his roles. also, bear in mind that scripts are written as filming is going on, so eric would have little idea on how his roles would turn out at the point when he decided to do the dramas he did. i don't think eric is one to shy away from controversial roles, but that doesn't need to be a reflection on who he is as a person.

I totally agree with you, don't get the actor and a character messed up. Just that the character is digusting, doesnt mean that eric is disgusting, just the role.

I totally agree with you +2. I found the scene and the story, in a whole, disgusting , but I'll always love Eric sshi. He is, indeed, a great actor.

I agree..please dont messed up things. character and the actor is totally different. drama is drama. Real is real.

i dont know, maybe i just have this bias thinking towards Eric, but i've been following him since his Bulsae days,he's great as a person, and he's good as an actor.

@3plex, IMHO, this isn't rape at all but I do respect different people see or choose to see different things. Yes, I don't like what led up to their 1st time but that's how real life is (may be rare but does happen).... I don't know where you get the whole Yeseul still being bullied by the production team & co-stars from but it's funny when the fans are throwing out all kinds rumors and yet asking others not to judge Yeseul when she took off and left....

If I'm going with your rationale, when Yeseul plays the snobby Anna in Couple or Trouble, she is the diva she is now then?! You sound more like personally attacking him than disliking his character (who isn't all bad or 'distasteful' like you said)

Any way, I guess if people hates Kang-woo that much, Eric did his character justice then (from funny KW, to loud & obnoxious KW to a confused, hurted & betrayed KW, Eric got them all.

thanks for the recap!

I don't really feel like commenting on the sex scene because everyone else pretty much has that topic covered, so I'll just say...writers, please give Ryu a happy ending! I don't even care if it's with In Ah. And bring back the quirky! :D

WTF is with Eric and picking all these asshole roles? This is exactly what happened in Que Sera Sera but QSS was many times worst for me. QSS's scene made me throw my mouse at the screen and I could never forgive the 2. Both stupid just like how HMW and KW are being.

KW is desperate and hurting. He is looking for proof that she really loves him even though he keeps finding evidence that she is just using him. He wants to continue to love her .. he wants to understand her. I have no problem with this episode.

It's that I have a problem with this episode really... it just completely threw me off and I actually liked it. They actually shared real good chemistry in this episode and I just hope it brings something positive into the storyline itself.

LMFAO I agree with you completely! hahahaha

And he didn't RAPE her whatsoever. It was consensual because she agreed to it. It would be rape if he FORCED himself but he gave her a choice in which she stupidly obliged.

I don't think it's a good sign that I found Kang Woo scary and didn't want Ryu to leave her alone with him. I get why he's being frightening, but that doesn't stop my worry that if he ever got into a serious fight with Myung Wol things could go seriously south.

Why is every spy in this show The Worst Spy Ever?

But really, are we all bewildered because this scene happened at all or because it happened in this show? Would we have been better prepared if this was a melo?

actually this drama is not a rom-com to begin with, if i remember it right.as i remember, they introduced this drama as spy-melo genre. but, since the first few episodes they showed light comedy, people start thinking its a rom-com.

Really? I definitely didn't know that. Since it had dark comedy and was quirky with such a ridiculous set up (North Koreans in a war room discussing Myung Wol's plans to get Kang Woo to defect to the North) it didn't seem like classic melo fare.

I guess even if it was billed as melo, it still doesn't seem to fit how they've done the whole show tonally. :/

the sex scene aside, I think this is the right point in the show for the truth to start being revealed. I mean lets face is HMY is a North Korean Spy and last I checked North Korea wasn't high on any bodies good guy list. So they will have a lot to overcome to be together, like the DMZ to name one.

I mean I wouldn't bellieve a last epsiode quick wrap up for this one. Its going to take the 5 remaining to resolve

People are completely overanalyzing the sex scene. I mean, we can all pretty much agree that NONE of us agree with how it happened but both were at each others ends. He was tired of all the trust issues and lies... and at some point, I think she may be desprately trying to figure out how she truly felt about Kang Woo.

Still, it doesn't make it right at all. That's why we both see them apologize to each other in each other's arms. Knowing what they did WAS wrong, but at the same time they didn't quite regret it either.

My only thing was for some reason, I believe part of the reason why Myung Wol consented it was she was hoping that maybe she can find them having sex a reason for her to hate him. She seems to still be somewhat confused about how she truly feels about him and Kang Woo keeps finding excuses to not question how she truly feels about him.

Okay, I am just saying but comparing the so called "bed scene" is not worst of as thai lakorns. I love watching thai dramas but the thing is that sometimes in some 'certain' ones, they make the guy go drunk and actually Rape the female lead. :X

And I think some people are not remembering what the word 'rape' means.

But anyways, i didnt think that MWS would go like this but i still like the drama as ever. SO SERIOUS AND INTENSE.
I think i need a big slap in my face and this is the right drama to get away from all these rom-coms drama.

I totally agree... Seems like Ryu MW r more of in the same boat or frequency..... MW & KW would be a nice short term couple but, they don't have so much in common except that both fathers were dead when they were small... Ryu on the other hand would go all out for MW ... Such a sexy romantic who needs a little bit of coaxing to express his feelings.... *sigh*

I've always been rooting for some Ryu & In Ah to hook up since Singapore. Their chemistry was awesome since they first met and it's too bad that it's only not until episode 13 that the writers decided to possibly revisit a love interest between the two (In Ah taking interest in Ryu's bad guy ordeal).

This episode creeped me out. This was the most unsexy love scene. Ugh!
Myung Wol is supposed to be a kICK ASS SPY, and she lets Kang Woo treat her like shit. Kang Woo is acting like a drunken douche bag. Ryu should have gone into the bedroom and punched out Kang Woo.
The drama is going very weird and dark. Where is this story headed?

I did like the closing, that when he finally finds out absolutely everything he knows about her is fake he asks for the truth instead of just shunning her.

My guess on how it goes on:

In the next episode or the next after that, they will make up. And the last remaining episodes tells, how they will go on. Will they run away from MW's death orders. Will KW go to north korea? What happens to Ryu? Or will he try to kill KW? OR if he gets orders to kill MW? OH MY GOD IF THAT HAPPENS!

And the episodes are suppose to be 18 right?

As I got halfway through this review, I found myself scrolling back up to the very top of the page to make sure that I was, indeed, reading a review on Myung-wol the Spy. My initial reaction was, "What the?!" When did this drama take such a drastic turn from playful & comedic to dark & serious with a side of rape??? I was so turned off by this episode that I couldn't even finish it. So many wrong choices & Big Misunderstandings that could've easily been resolved if people actually communicated. & I agree with GF that, for a spy, Myung-wol is not too bright. In the previous episode they showed us flashbacks of her training/combat days & gave us the impression that she was actually GOOD at what she does. Now I can't help but scoff at the fact that they're trying to pass her off as a spy which just seems like a big joke to me.

Dear writers of the show,
Please take some bipolar medications because you're killing me!

Staying out of the rape debate (especially when I always forget to check for replies) though I will say this reminds me of Gone With the Wind. Interesting how two have such simliar situation and results while being so far apart date wise.

Otherwise I'm just full of expletives about how this shows that South Korea has some serious growing pains to do.

With the live shoot system, and writing scripts late like this show has been doing, I don't know if Eric knew that there would be this scene when he signed up for this role. But we shouldn't fault him for going through with it and being a good sport. :)

I usually don't post comments, but the comments on this episode were just pissing me off.

FIRST: KW DID NOT RAPE MW.
He was drunk and upset and confused. He felt like he was betrayed by the person he loves.
Myung Wol is a FREAKING SPY! She's STRONG and ATHLETIC! If she didn't want to have sex she could've pushed him off. BUT SHE AGREED TO IT!

SECOND: They're just human (well at least their characters are)
Yeah I admit them having sex was wrong if you're just doing it to prove your feelings, but that scene just proves that they were human and they made a mistake. KW KNEW he made a mistake and even said sorry.

THIRD: Try to understand KW's feelings
He was confused and felt betrayed. STOP SAYING THAT HE'S SUCH A BAD PERSON. He risked his career and image for her because he sincerely loves her an then later "Finds out that she never loved him and was just using him". HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF YOU WERE IN HIS SHOES?!?!

FOURTH: This doesn't mean MW was being a weak little female
Yeah she gave in, but WHY CAN'T SHE?!?!
MEN give in ALL THE TIME in dramas, books, movies, ect. and what's their excuse? "It's because they're men"
Well why can't a woman just have sex without being labeled as a weak female or as a whore?
IN MY OPINION I think she did something that made me love her character even more. I expected her to push him away again, but she did something I've never seen another character do before, she actually didn't say no, BUT THAT'S OKAY!

No offense to you Marie, but you sounded like you were contradicting yourself a little there. You disagree with their actions by saying sex is wrong, but later in your comment, you seem like you condone what they've done. Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to insult you, but just saying it sounded that way.

I can understand the two characters. KW just wants confirmation that MW loves him because he's desperately in love with her and MW is a little confused with her feelings, but wants to prove that she loves KW. Still, I believe sex in that kind of situation wasn't exactly the best way to resolve matters and prove their feelings for one another. I liked the direction the drama was headed since there has to be another major roadblock with 5 episodes remaining, but that scene wasn't really necessary in my point of view.

I think rape is a rather strong word to describe the scene since she did consent to it, but I think people are trying to say that he kind of forced her into that situation. As a guy, I could sympathize with the KW because he loves her and is desperate and drunk, but he did put her in a situation where she had to choose not to sleep with him or not.

While she consented in the end because she wanted him to trust her, it's pretty clear to me that she didn't really want to go through it seeing as how she says "Why are you doing this" and asks him if he really can't trust her. In his drunken and depressed state, MW rejecting him would mean she doesn't love him and he would have taken it as another sign of betrayal. That's why she consented to it. If he didn't put her in that situation, he wouldn't have had to apologize to her and realize his mistake.

KW isn't a bad person. He's just hurt, confused, and wants confirmation, but I do believe that what he did to get that confirmation was wrong.

It's not rape when he has an agenda and so does she. He wants her to show him that she loves him. She on the other hand, wants to make him trust her. Although it's the wrong approach in many levels, one cannot claim rape.

On MW being strong, in a combat sort of way she is strong, but in many ways she is still a child, emotionly, and having any kind of understanding of her own feelings.

I would imagine that up until this point she has lived a very singular life, North Korea isn't exactly Soul.

Plus her job was busting people for watching Drama DVDs

on another note MW has lied to KW several times, the premise of there realtionship was an untruth, and even though she obviously loves him at some point she will need to choose a side.

Its got to be KW and South Korea, because KW isn't going to NK or North Korea and and leave KW.

MW hasn't picked a side yet. If she had done so already she would have found a way to not take the book, or to tell KW the truth sooner

In Battle Star Galactica, s003, Sharon Valarii abondoned her race (Cylons), her cause and redefined her religion to be with the man she loved- she made a choice , she choose a side and she stuck with it.

Wow! looks like everyone's putting in their '2 cents' (some pretty long), I might as well....
Here goes:

Like everyone out there, I really don't condone 'rape' or any forms of it but some people are reading way to much of it.

I first watched it (w/o subs), I didn't think much of it and even re-watching with subs I still don't 'cause it's a show, PEOPLE!! People are flawed and so are these characters and situations like these happen in real life because of the decisions you make in life whether its be 'good' or 'bad'. It is not the actor fault that he has to portray KW character. I applaud Eric for his superb acting as Kang Woo.They probably put it in the script to hype up the show to create better ratings and 'a twist of' a ending. And I don't think there's a secret agenda to debase Han Ye Seul either.

~Also, albeit the drama's gonna have an article or an press conference about this episode due to so many opposition and public outcry.

Hmm, I read the recap before seeing the episode and expected to be disappointed. After watching it I have to disagree with this recap and some of the comments. I did not find this episode creepy like many others. If I recall correctly in the beginning of this drama Myung Wol was instructed to sleep with Kang Woo, so I was not surprised that it happened. When she first tried to sleep with him it was more comical because there were no feelings between to the two character. Now at episode 13 you have two people in love, but their relationship is plagued with trust issues. That night he's drunk, emotional and not in his right mind, so he apologizes afterward because he's on this emotional roller coaster. Does she love me or not? Why am I feeling this way? Yada yada yada, blah blah blah. She is also conflicted because she has real feeling for him, but has a commitment to the mission and her comrades; I think this is also why she apologizes. No, it was not the right time because they were playing games with their emotions, but again I did not find it creepy. I just think it was an act of desperation from both of them. IDK, for people who were more sensitive to the subject maybe the script should have had her start to unbutton her blouse and then he falls over and starts snoring....OR maybe he could become nauseated and take off running to the bathroom. Yep, perfect mood killer. Anyway, that was my 2 cents. If you don't like it, I'll ask for a refund later. :) Sorry for any typos!

Just watched the entire ep with subs, and would like to share my views with fellow Spy lovers here. I read about the controversial sex scene before watching it, and I find that scene and the very last part of this ep the most stirring in terms of my emotional response. The sex scene has Kang Woo forcing Myung Wol to prove that she loves him....I don't know, the whole scene just felt so SAD to me and so HUMAN - I can understand the frustration and bewilderment that Kang Woo is going through, and in his desperation and despair, he is clutching at straws, as any man would, at anything that will stop his world from collapsing; his happy, safe world with the woman he loves is tumbling down , fast, like a house of cards, and he is trying desperately to arrest the fall. Eric is a wonderful wonderful actor, and he conveyed the pain and hurt that Kang Woo is going through with those deep soulful eyes of his. Myung Wol lay there like a still cold statue, her hands by her side. If she had touched him, wrapped her arms around him, kissed him back, I think the rape connotations would have been dispelled. But, no, she lay there passively - those of us who shout rape would liken her situation to a lamb to the slaughter, while those of us who say it was consensual would argue that she was a virgin, it was her first time, she was understandably nervous. Me? I'm of the opinion she reverted to Han Ye Seul at that moment, and felt REALLY awkward and uncomfortable with a thousand eyes and cameras on her.....WHY do Kor actresses freeze in kissing scenes?????? But I digress...

The last part is my favourite....where she looks for the file, and Eric's voice booms out behind her (I LOVE Eric's voice....it's so DEEP and just RESONATES in the quiet of the room). His face....ah, it breaks my heart to see his eyes and hear that catch in his beautiful voice....LOVE that catch - only Eric can do that to perfection; how do I describe it? He screams out his rage from the depths of his soul and it breaks on a sob....it pierces my heart to hear it. Terrific actor, love this moment, love this show.

How does he do that? especially the part at his home when he talked to MW for the first time after their 'on camera confession'-scene...... He's SO into GW character...even i can't find that expression in me... Great acting!!!

YY..I agree with u on MW's acting..she needs to improve on her body language especially around GW and the kissing scenes. Check out the strange body posture when she puts her head on GW's shoulder, saying 'I love u....' Arrrghh.. Fakeness!! I wish MW's face can express a bit more sadness like producing real tears when it should...

Ok, I actually loved this episode, am I the only one?

Kang Woo made a mistake. Myung Wol made a mistake. And what? This drama could never be more real. I mean, isn't this something that happens every day?

I really liked that they weren't afraid of pushing Kang Woo's crisis this deep. And they showed that even drama characters are neither black or white - they also have their weaknesses and DO make serious mistakes, too.

I admit that Kang Woo acted like an asshole. But what's up with Myung Wol, anyway? She didn't make the situation any better. She could have beaten crap out of him, but she got laid instead. And disappointed me much more than Kang Woo.

I can't wait to see how are they going to solve this.

Woooowww! this is something else everyone is going crazy over this episode. I feel that this is getting blown wayyyyyyy out of proportion. Even though I do admit the sex scene threw me for a loop, their adults and can do WHATEVER they want. I wasn't like she was pushing him away which she could have she is a spy for god-sakes, she is trained to do so. This is a very realistic interpretation of how real life works for some people. Plus, guys lets ALLL remember it is a DRAMA!, it's suppose to be dramatic, crazy, and sometimes twisted. The actors are just doing their job, it's not like they are sitting here in real life saying that "this is what to do if your having problems with your lover". And if you think this show is condoning bad behavior DON'T WATCH IT!!!!!!!! You have the ability to turn off the tv or computer. Don't ruin the shows reputation and name just because you didn't like what happened. These elements make the drama interesting. This episode just leaves me wanting more which is what the writers and producers want.

Strangely, I quite live Ep.13 not because of the bed scene that is somewhat blown out of proportion but because of such emotional roller coaster that were thrown on us in this episode.

My heart dropped when KW was about to propose to MW only to catch her stealing his book and yet HE made an excuse for her that “she must have a reason…” only to find out later it was for another man…... aaaaaaaah!

Moving on to THE scene. In my opinion, it wasn’t rape. Even though KW initiated it, she is very much capable of saying no or physically fencing him off. They (the lovers) were both willing participants for different reasons. For KW, it’s a sign of reassurance that she loves him after he scarified his career for her. For MW, it could be either to show him back that she also love him OR merely to gain his trust for her mission, I can’t tell for sure. Regardless of their reasons, two confused souls got caught up in a daze moment. They both apologized to other person and they both appeared genuinely happy the morning after…. They’re in love with each other after all.

Even though I don’t like how their 1st time together started out like so but I would rather take that OVER if they had made out when MW jumped on KW with her Operation Great Wall of China in earlier episodes.

Any way, the best moment for me was the end of Ep.13 when KW confronts MW about her real identity…. The anguish & guilt on MW’s face + KW’s feeling betrayed & hurt…. his trembling hand, his voice, his eyes, his facial expression gosh I just wanta hug him tight.

I wonder if MW will fess up about her real identity & the mission this time or yet coming up with another cover…. Aish, another 5 more episodes to go, the writers team might huh?

Looks like CR managed to the real book from KW now? Don’t quite know how he knew where to find it but he did get the book from KW’s home and that means he has 3 of the 4 books now? Will he team up with Chairman Joo to decode the book’s secret message or trying to steal Chairman Joo’s book again as well? Is Chairman Joo the Goblin man that killed KW’s dad? (I have feeling he is) and how will MW’s marrying KW mission end….. Hiiiiiing so many thing to find out XD

Jeez, I marvel at the naivete of thinking that sleeping with someone is a proof of love. I guess Kang-woo must be pretty innocent (read: enormously stupid) to believe that, since the morning after he's all sunshine and roses. Come to think of it, teenage boys ask for the same thing, but even they know that it's all about getting laid, not some epic love.

I have to say, I don't know if it's because of the drama on the set, but the story is getting boring, repetitive and annoying. I'm not pulling my hair out yet but (unfortunately) there are few more episodes to go. Meh.

Here is the difference between rape and make-up sex:
Rape is when the woman DOES NOT WANT IT and does not agree to it. Make-up sex is when the woman actually wants it and agrees to it after having a fight.

Here is the definition of rape: "Rape is any act of sexual intercourse that is forced upon a person".

Here is another definition for you: " Coercion is the practice of forcing another party to behave in an involuntary manner (whether through action or inaction) by use of threats, rewards, or intimidation or some other form of pressure or force. In law, coercion is codified as the duress crime. Such actions are used as leverage, to force the victim to act in the desired way. Coercion may involve the actual infliction of physical pain/injury or psychological harm in order to enhance the credibility of a threat. The threat of further harm may lead to the cooperation or obedience of the person being coerced. Torture is one of the most extreme examples of coercion i.e. severe pain is inflicted until the victim provides the desired information."

Here is the legal definition of rape:

Rape and/or sexual assault is forced, manipulated, or coerced sexual contact by a stranger, friend or acquaintance. It is an act of aggression and power combined with some form of sex. A person is forced into sexual contact through verbal coercion, threats, physical restraint, and/or physical violence. Consent is not given.

So if we believe that she agreed because she did not want to lose him, but did not want sex, it still can be qualified as a "rape". Yes, she wanted to have sex with him but not like that and not that night. She gave in because she was afraid of losing him. He coerced her into having sex. She did gave her consent so legally he could not be prosecuted for raping her, but he did coerced her into having sex and that was wrong.

Sex proves a lot of things, like which organs are in working order, but it does not prove love. Certainly not in the way Kang-woo wants, for her to sex the doubt out of him. IT DOESN’T WORK THAT WAY.

My only consolation is that he discovers right away that it doesn’t work that way"

WORD sister. WORD. made me SO disappointed. i believe in strong female characters. Myung wol was supposed to be strong; but the whole time she's let kang woo just order her around and now she even gave in her virginity to him; to make him self confiedent once more?!! ridiculous. but agreed, the consolation was deff the end moment.
