Best Love: Episode 10

It’s just the way I like it: Superheroes Over Flowers, as the boys step up their game and leave us all spun around in the process. Will Iron Man get a new heart? Will Spiderman sell his friend up the river for pastries? Will this drama ever stop being awesome?

Best Love hit a series ratings high with today’s episode at 18.4%, followed by City Hunter 12.8% and Romance Town 10.3%.

EPISODE 10 RECAP

Ae-jung takes Pil-joo’s hand and the fireworks go off, to the great dismay of Se-ri and Jin, who both watch with long faces. Jin clutches his heart in pain and Se-ri can’t hide her disappointment, though she has to continue her MC duties for the happy couple.

Ae-jung quietly tells Pil-joo that it must be awkward to continue holding her hand like this, and tells him to try and pretend like no one else is here. Pil-joo: “I already am. Because that’s how I made up my mind from the beginning. I told you that this was real for me. What I’m holding now is Gu Ae-jung’s heart, who came to me.” Oh, swoon. How can a guy be this perfect? It’s downright unnatural.

She tells him that she’s sorry for making him jump into such a crazy mess, and he tells her, “Now that I’ve jumped in and grabbed hold, I’m not going to let go easily.”

The shoot ends and everyone starts packing it up, but Pil-joo and Ae-jung stand off to the side, still holding hands. Ae-jung tells him that the shoot’s done, so he can let go now, so he does… only to switch to interlocking fingers as he holds on tighter. Omo!

Pil-joo: “I don’t think it’s a shoot. I think it’s for real. So I’m just going to keep holding.” Eeeeeeeeeee! He says it with this totally dry look, and then breaks into his trademark dorky smile. Seriously, I think I love him.

Ae-hwan purposely ditches her at the shoot so that she’ll have to get a ride from Pil-joo, and calls to lie that the whole family is out, so she can take her precious time getting home. She’s embarrassed by the blatant lie, but Pil-joo feels bolstered by the Gu family being P-line (as in, Pil-joo Line, aka Team Pil-joo).

He tells her that she ought to get onboard too, and she asks what the benefits of P-line are. He names: “Safety, comfort, and knowing you won’t be shaken.” Oh, honey. I already want to give you a consolation hug. Those things are all true, but damn are they unsexy.

Jin sits outside Ae-jung’s house, wondering what he could possibly say, and cursing at his heart rate monitor (as if it’s the inanimate object’s fault for not correctly deducing human emotion, heh).

Hyung-kyu finds him there, having run out of Jenny’s, and when Jin tells him that he’s hurting, Ding Dong invites him in. It just occurred to me that this grown man’s only friend is Ding Dong. I would say that’s sad, except they seem to be on par, maturity-wise, so… match made in heaven?

Ae-jung comes home to find Jin sitting in her living room, sipping tea out of a Pororo mug. That visual is just so wrong. He totally overplays the heart trouble to gain sympathy, which doesn’t work, so then Hyung-kyu plays the “He’s MY guest” angle. Ae-jung treats him like a playdate then, and tells Hyung-kyu that his friend can play till his bedtime.

Hyung-kyu asks why Jin’s always getting scolded by his aunt, and he explains that he’s wronged her, but doesn’t know how to apologize. Ding Dong thinks it’s easy—you just say, “I was wrong. I’m sorry.” But Jin says that what’s easy for a seven-year old to say is not so easy for a thirty-seven-year old.

That’s when Ding Dong passes over his notebook, which has a box at the bottom of the page: “The Things I Did Wrong Today.” Jin scoffs, “You want me to write an apology in a children’s notebook? … … … Ding Dong, you’re a genius!” Heh.

He makes a bunch of false starts, clearly very new at this apology thing. Ae-jung makes kimbap for Hyung-kyu’s class picnic tomorrow, and tells him to pick out what to wear. He shows up in his Spiderman costume, and Jin can’t contain his laughter, making Hyung-kyu self-conscious.

Ae-jung scolds him, so he turns to Hyung-kyu and says as Dokko Jin the Fashionista, that confidence makes the outfit. He tells him that he always wanted to be Iron Man when he was little (because of the man-made heart), which is Totally. Adorable.

Jin keeps trying to stall Hyung-kyu from falling asleep because he hasn’t found his window of opportunity yet, but he’s run out of time. As a last ditch effort, he tells Ae-jung that he never got to go on picnics when he was a kid, and asks her to go on a picnic with him tomorrow. “Pleeeee-aaaaaase?”

Ae-jung: “No. Dream on. I will never go on a picnic with you, because between us, there will always be rain.” Jin: “Then I’ll wait, until the rain clears. Then there’ll be a rainbow. THIS BIG.” Hahaha.

The next morning, it actually does rain, and Ae-jung comforts a totally deflated Hyung-kyu. The doorbell rings, and she grumbles thinking that it’s Jin, and opens the door at the height of her annoyance.

Only it’s Pil-joo, here with the digital camera, as a gift to thank her for showing up last night. Hyung-kyu asks if Pil-joo liked superheroes when he was a kid, and he says that he liked detective comics more. He sees the kimbap that Ae-jung made for his picnic, and offers him a trade—anything he wants in exchange for his lunchbox.

Pil-joo takes him to the doughnut shop, and tells him to get whatever he wants. Hyung-kyu hesitates, and then blurts, “Iron Man, I’m sorry!” Pwahahaha! I love that this kid is old enough to know that he’s selling his friend out for a bucket of doughnuts. Love it.

And then? Pil-joo pitches a tent in the middle of their living room, and they have a picnic anyway, which is just the sweetest thing on earth. I love that both men know that getting in good with Hyung-kyu is the way to Ae-jung’s heart, and that they’re both so blatant about it.

Jin calls, his number saved today as “Proper [or Perfectly Mannered],” and he happily announces that he’s prepared something for Hyung-kyu’s picnic because of the rain. He’s outside her house, with an RV parked behind him. Aw. It’s just kind of perfect that Pil-joo shows up with low-rent tent and Jin shows up with flashy RV.

She tells him that there’s someone already here, and he heartbreakingly guesses that it’s Pil-joo. She mentions what he told her last night—that people always forgave him when he behaved badly because he was sick, and adds, “But even if you’re sick enough to die, it won’t matter to me.” Oooof. He just sits outside her house in the rain like that, still stinging from her words.

The proposal episode of Couple Making airs, and Jin watches it for a while, finally turning it off angrily. He clutches his heart in pain, deducing that with CG and background music, it’s extra heartbreaking. HA.

I’m beginning to suspect that just as he had confused rapid heartbeat as causing love, he’s confusing real heart pain for heartbreak. Stop clutching your heart. It’s worrisome!

The new segment of Couple Making is a big hit, and Se-ri whines at her MC role now reduced to useless opening/closing and commentary on the happy couple, which is secondary to the real rub—losing the man she wants to Ae-jung. She whines that it’s just like their KBSN days, playing fourth fiddle and losing everything to Ae-jung.

Pil-joo finds her and asks why she said that she liked him the other night, and she gets defensive, saying that if he thinks she was joking, he can take it however he pleases. He tells her that she must’ve been joking, to say something like that, at a time like that.

She says that it’s because she doesn’t like Ae-jung, which is neither true nor false. That’s part of it, sure, but I do think that she really likes him, on his own merits, outside of the fact that she always wants what Ae-jung has, or doesn’t want her to have him.

He tells her that she’s a bad person, almost scolding her like a little girl. He obtusely just tells her not to play pranks like that anymore. Se-ri cries in the bathroom, amazed at Pil-joo’s complete obliviousness toward her feelings.

She overhears a girl group member (the one managed by her old KBSN manager) sneaking in a phone call to her boyfriend in the next stall over, and muses that idol stars are still dating secretly, same as ever. She flashes back to her idol days, when she was busy crushing on an idol boy (cameo by Brian Joo).

Ae-jung had helped her try to sneak him a secret love note, but when they were almost caught by their manager, Ae-jung had run over and chewed it up, to cover for her. She got an ink-stained tongue in the process, and they had a good laugh over it.

She thinks of it fondly now, wondering if she had offered to help Ae-jung date Dokko Jin secretly like the old days, then she might have had a chance with Pil-joo. She finds Manager Jang scolding the idol star as expected, and he complains to her that managing idol stars’ love lives is the hardest part of his job.

He compliments her for never giving him that kind of trouble, and she just smoothly says that she never got CAUGHT is all. Heh. He says that Mina was the real trouble back then, ’cause she was dating the hottest idol boy of the day, and their agency was basically at war with his agency, to manage the situation.

He recalls that Ae-jung played a big part in all that, and Se-ri wonders if Ae-jung helped Mina date secretly too. Hm. Interesting.

Pil-joo’s mom decides to visit Ae-jung’s house to see how she lives for herself, and meets her family, discovering that Ae-jung basically supports her father, brother, and nephew. Mother is so not pleased.

Jin’s agent tells him that Jerry Heimer (Pfft. As in Bruckheimer?) is doing a new superhero movie and wants to cast him. Looks like he might be going to Hollywood after all. Jae-seok tells Ae-jung and Jenny the news, that he’ll be meeting the director and making his decision soon. Ae-jung muses to herself, “He’ll really get to be like Iron Man.”

Hyung-kyu goes over to offer Jin some doughnuts, apologizing for accepting them in a moment of weakness. Ha. Jin sweetly tells him that he’s only seven, and therefore needn’t feel such guilt over snack foods.

He tells Ding Dong to eat up, and then exercise, and then wonders how much he’ll grow while he’s away. Hyung-kyu asks if he’s going somewhere, and he says, “I’m going to be a superhero.”

Ae-jung cleans up Hyung-kyu’s room, and discovers Jin’s apology, written under “The Things I Did Wrong Today”:

Saying that I made the mistake of thinking that my heart beating caused me to like you… was a mistake. I’m sorry. –Dokko Jin ♥

She sighs, and begs him (aloud, to herself) to leave her alone and go to Hollywood and protect the earth. Aw.

Jin picks up his potato plant, tears welling up in his eyes. “If I leave you here like this, I suppose you’ll naturally wither and die…”

Jae-seok comes to pick him up the next day for his meeting with Jerry Heimer, except his heart starts racing and he clutches it in pain. “Jae-seok… Hospital…” Finally! Gah, does it take a full-on heart attack for you to go see a doctor?

Jae-seok rushes him to the hospital in a panic, Jin clutching his heart in pain the whole way. The doctor examines him and the verdict is in: “You’re broken.” Why does everyone speak of him like he’s the Dokko-Bot?

The doc tells him that he’s rejecting the pacemaker, and Jin asks if he’s back to square one health-wise, like he was ten years ago. The doc confirms that he is, and that it’s a good thing he’s been monitoring his heart rate as closely as he’s been lately (thanks to the KBSN song)—otherwise he could’ve gotten much worse and just collapsed out of nowhere.

He needs surgery, and soon. Jin asks what his chance of survival is. Doc says 50-50. At home, the potato plant withers, as if magically linked to his heart. Jin sits in a daze, musing, “My heart really WAS breaking.” He struggles to hold back his tears.

People start recognizing him in the hospital lobby, and as he hears their whispers, “It’s Dokko Jin!” He takes a deep breath and puts his star persona back on, which sort of breaks my heart. He puts his sunglasses on like armor, and greets the growing crowd with smiles and signs autographs.

Ae-jung goes to Pil-joo’s house to shoot a housewarming date, and as they cook dinner together, she encounters a potato with a frown. Pil-joo asks if she likes them, and she says she “Really really really doesn’t,” so he puts it aside. Aw, poor potato.

Jin accepts the movie deal, and tells his agent that he’ll go to Hollywood after the MBS Daesangs, where he’s up for a Best Actor award. He declares, “I will remain at the height of coolness.” Implication being that he’d like to die leaving behind the best version of himself. Gah, now I’M broken!

His agent then meets with the Couple Making PDs, who tell her that they managed to get Ae-jung onto the Daesangs as a presenter, to bolster their show and improve her image. They ask for the agency’s help in glamming her up for the event.

They also add that they’d like her to switch cell phones to a new brand so that she and Pil-joo have matching couple phones, and President Moon notes that it’s the same one that Dokko does the CF for, while pointing out its features, and the meta-on-meta product placement in this show just about kills me. It’s smart to hang a lantern on it because it’s so blatant (and best to acknowledge that you’re selling your airtime rather than pretending that we’re dumb and don’t notice, like most shows) but damn, it’s getting ridiculous.

It’s time to pick out awards show couture, and Ae-jung runs into Jin, literally gobsmacked by his be-tuxed hotness. He chases after her and notes that she cleans up nicely too, though gotta say, nothing beats Cha Seung-won in a tux. Siiiigh.

He tells her that he heard she was presenting at the awards, and asks if it isn’t the Best Actor category. Ae-jung: “No, as if. Best Child Actor. You’re not… going to win in that category, are you?” HA.

She worries about tripping on the red carpet, and he takes her by the shoulders and raises her chin. Jin: “You walk the red carpet by confidence.” Aw. He tells her to think of herself as the best in all the world as she walks.

She says that she doesn’t look cheap today, so she’ll have to pretend to be all that, and he looks at her sincerely, “You didn’t when you were wearing the frog either. Of all the frogs I’ve ever seen, you were the most luxurious. Keep running hard.”

He stops to ask how he looks, since he’s got to look the best, today of all days. She looks him up and down and says that he looks handsome, adding that even when he was petty and clingy Butthole Jin, he was still handsome.

Jin: “Remember me that way.”

Waaaaah. No dying! No remembering, no leaving, and no dying!

It’s awards show time, and Jin walks the red carpet with flair. He joins Se-ri in her dressing room and tells her that he’ll be announcing his Hollywood movie as he accepts his award.

Ae-jung arrives and Pil-joo stops in to cheer her on and calm down her nerves. She and Jenny run into Manager Jang with his idol girls, and when she offers up a nice greeting for them to perform well today, he sneers that she’s telling the girl who got booted off of Couple Making because of her, to do well.

He belittles her for overstepping, and says that she’s not at the level where she can do anything and be forgiven for it. Ae-jung takes Jin’s advice to heart, and says, “Today, I won’t hang my head for no reason,” and walks away, head held high.

But Manager Jang is a petty rat bastard, so he decides that he’s going to get his revenge. He purposely spills his coffee all over her white dress, and chides her for being dirty, and playing dress-up.

A PD scrambles into Se-ri’s dressing room to ask her to fill in and present the Child Actor award, and Jin perks up at that, realizing that something’s wrong with Ae-jung. He sees Jenny arguing with Manager Jang, and then finds Ae-jung sitting at the bottom of the stairs, alone.

He looks at her tenderly and sees that her arm is burnt from the spill. She just puts up a brave front, saying that dressing up like this doesn’t suit her, and that she should just stick to frogs. That just kills me even more, when she’s all stiff-upper-lippy that way.

The awards show gets underway (with footage from the actual Korea Film Awards, with Song Yoon-ah as MC, and the likes of Won Bin, Kim Tae-hee, and Song Ye-jin giving unwitting cameos).

Jin walks out and discovers Manager Jang laughing about his evil petty victory over the phone, and follows him into the stairwell with a determined look. Once no one else is around, he socks him with a punch, and Manager Jang goes down. Damn, that’s satisfying.

Ae-jung comes home and Pil-joo tends to her wound, wrapping it in a bandage. They come out to see breaking news, that Dokko Jin did not attend the awards, and now speculation over bad blood between him and the director of Fighter is blowing up.

Jae-seok gets bombarded at the agency, and President Moon tells him to fend them off, while she takes care of the real problem…

She’s at the hospital, where Manager Jang is being treated in the emergency room. Holy crap. He beat the bloody hell out of him. Oh, dear. This is bad. Bad, bad, bad. I thought it was just one punch, but it looks like he went to town in a rage, and we all know how Manager Jang is going to twist this whole thing around. Eek!

Jin is holed up at home but unreachable, so the agency asks Ae-hwan to sneak him out while he can. He tells Ae-jung that Jin hit somebody, and worries if he’ll listen to him, if he goes over there. Ae-jung offers to go instead, because there’s something she needs to confirm.

She heads over to his house, and finds the lock code the same. He comes out, weary but looking perfectly fine (looks like he did all the hitting, which is kind of worse, if you think about how the press is going to spin this).

She asks what happened, but he tells her that he has no interest in having a press conference with her, and says he’s tired. She chastises him for messing up, reminding him that he’s supposed to go to Hollywood and fulfill his lifelong dream to be a superhero and protect the earth.

Jin: I’m not going. Instead of the earth, which spins fine without my protection, the thing I have to protect, while looking totally cool and awesome, is right here.

SPLAT. *jumps ship, hangs head for being so wishy-washy.*

He takes a step closer to her and adds, “I was so severely awesome today, that I’m tired.” Ha.

He leans into her for a hug, almost propping up his tired body on hers. She asks what he’s doing, and he holds on, “Stay still. So I can keep being awesome.” HA. He sighs with his chin resting on her shoulder, “I need strength. Rechaaaaarge.”

COMMENTS

Oh, I ADORE the superhero metaphor for this episode. It’s so fitting, not only in the hero-protects-the-heroine way, but because the grown men in this drama really are like seven-year old boys, playing Spidey and Iron Man, thinking that the world spins because of them.

This is a heroine who doesn’t need protecting, but I love what it means for him to TRY. He’s finally putting something on the line, not to win her, but for her benefit alone.

I like that something’s finally putting Jin’s stardom in jeopardy because I actually want to see him lose something to love her. Otherwise it’s too easy and it’s just a Cinderella tale with nothing at stake for him. Now he’s actively putting his career on the line to be by her side, not just losing popularity, but in a real, all-in, rock-bottom kind of way.

In fiercely protecting her pride, he’s about to lose everything that makes him… Dokko Jin, and that, to him is everything. I love watching a character grow up in the course of a drama, and though Jin’s got miles to go before he sheds the bedspread cape and superhero underoos, he’s definitely winning my heart in the process.

Okay, what are the statistics of the Hong sisters dramas and one of the lead characters dying in the end?

Realistically (yes, I am one of THOSE people), Dokko Jin is going to die in the end. I am coming off of a kdrama ending reality check with 49 Days. So unless the Hong sisters always cater to the audience and have happy endings, we are in for a world of hurt.

So, walking that light's pathway, I deduce that Dokko Jin really doesn't care much about anything at this point, except Ae-jung. However, with the written type of personality he has, I don't think he would ever tell Ae-jung that he is having serious health issues. That information will probably be coming from his assistant. Will she turn to his side during his hospital stay or remain with Pil-joo?

Pil-joo... I wonder about him. What is making him push so hard, all of the sudden, to be in a relationship? He's how old? He didn't even want to do the reality show at first. I believe that he hasn't confessed love for Ae-jung as of yet, either. How can he be so "asleep" with regard to relational issues, and yet turn 180 degrees and be so "awake"? People who tend to appear to change, have a tendency to revert back to patterned behaviors. Dull, borning, routine, and unemotional toward women, but with a cute adorable smile and kind, caring personality, does that make sense?

For has hard as Jin has pushed away from Ae-jung, Pil-joo has pulled toward her. It's almost as if Pil-joo and Jin are complete opposites, like the magnets. But are they really? How can the be so opposite and yet be attracted to the same woman?

Is Ae-jung really so attractive to both of them but repulsive to the rest of society? That line of thinking is becoming totally nonsensical. How much longer are they going to play that line? There is no viable proof to justify the "hate" that Ae-jung experienced for 10 years. I think that may be a flaw in the Hong sisters writing.

Fans are fickle and have short memories, just look at Hollywood for a very good example or even what about the story of a certain singer /actor /dancer /model/ international superstar... who, five years ago or so, allegedly made a comment regarding a female singer/dancer which caused a stir in the Korean entertainment industry regarding their true relational status. Who really thinks that when they see them? All fans think about is the latest event happening in the stars life.

Based on your last comment... True, the fans do forget. But the media doesn't, and they will hang it over a celebrity's head forever if it means more viewers/readers. That's why I have such an issue with today's media, because they are so shallow and callous, and just want to hurt the feelings of celebrities. It really makes me angry and sad.

Fans may forgive or forget a scandal -- but you have to remember AeJung has had 10 years of scandals following her. It hasn't been just one thing. She hit SeRi, she was a yakuza's girlfriend, she has a secret love child, she had a "drinking" scandal, she used another famous actor who was already in a relationship with someone else to help launch her own acting career and more recently, she broke DJ's leg making him lose out on his Hollywood debut and she caused a scene on the set of Couple Making.

All of those scandals (except hitting SeRi) are untrue and the result of misunderstandings or all out lies by other parties. However, AJ's public persona has been so damaged that no one in the public has been willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. It's why DJ has been so reluctant to get close to her despite how much he likes her personally. In PJ's case, he is oblivious to celebrity gossip, so he was unaware of the scandals when he first started liking AJ.

I don't think it's a flaw in the writing. It makes perfect sense to me.

Asia's entertainment and I think esp Korea's not so forgiving as compared to Hollywood.

In hollywood, stars getting into trouble is a given. How many marriages have lasted? How many caught having affairs? How many doing drugs? How many getting some jailtime for various offences? Yet fans may not care...as long as they continue to produce what they do best...

But in Asia, a single scandal can really ruin your career...like if you had a affair or an out-of wedlock child (Which is a common occurrence in Hollywood)...and if you notice, they are strong on manners and socially moral stuffs...fans may curse an artist for 1 inappropriate comment ...it's illogical but there are people like that....

And if I remember correctly, AeJung's career was ruined not by one incident...it was multiple incidents all somehow occuring within the same time frame (it was mentioned earlier...but I don rememvber which epi)...it's enough to bring an artist low...

The Hong sisters have had happy-ever-after-and-everyone-lives endings for all their dramas except one, but that one drama was a sageuk and you know how sageuks are like with deadly wars, rebellions, and political machinations. Suicides aside, I'd think the kpop industry is less deadly than wars.

I think Pil-joo has been really sheltered by his mother and has only met a certain type of woman. Ae-jung is someone different. And it could just be that she's "the one" for him. Even though he is this dull doctor, he is still a guy and will instinctively try to win over his potential mate (my thoughts after reading all those Cosmo magazines that insist we're biologically wired to act a certain way). And I think it is very possible for two guys of opposite personalities to want the same women. This is what makes relationships and love so special - it's so unpredictable. You can be best friends/lovers with someone who is very similar to you and sometimes you can be best friends/lovers with someone totally different from you.

As for the last bit, I think that whether the fans will forget a scandal depends on a variety of factors, with the most important one being gender. I think guys get more slack. And like Abbie says, even if fans forget, the media will never forget will bring up old scandals on occassion. And it only takes a few haters to make it seem like the celebrity is being attacked from all sides. It also seems like Ae-jung was more hated in the early years of the KBSN breakup- it seems that in recent years, she was just a washed-up, irrelevant celebrity who has only become relevant now that the Couple Making ratings are rising. Recently, she has only been hated by the public for all those Dokko Jin accidents. Most of the hatred seems to stem from her old Manager, who should be arrested for assaulting her with that slap and then burning her hand. He's probably got a chip on his shoulder from missing out on the boatloads of cash he could have made from KBSN if Aejung hadn't called it quits.

Not forgetting that there was a near death in My Girlfriend is a Gumiho too. In fact, due to reports that they reshoot the ending, I could not be sure if the near-death is originally a death sentence, but which was changed for fanservice. I still remember the bucket of tears I cried for Woong on his 100th day with Miho. *tear up*. So happy to see him alive and well in his cameo in Ep 9.

I really like what you said about gender. I wish I knew more about the Korean entertainment industry, but in Hollywood, while people overall are EXTREMELY willing to forgive just about any awful behavior in a man (hell, not just in Hollywood, right?), women certainly are treated differently.

I mean, look at, say, Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears, vs., say, Charlie Sheen and Robert Downey, Jr. The women have been utterly decimated in the press and in the public's mind, while with the latter two, the public just shakes its head and says (more or less), "Boys will be boys, and besides, they're good actors and really hot."

I've heard it suggested that the unforgivable thing to the American public is really hypocrisy, not any specific behavior... so if a public figure's scandalous behavior conflicts with his or her image, he's doomed, but if it's more or less in line, he (or she, possibly) will be just fine. Maybe therein lies the death knell for Dokko Jin.

Again, wish I knew more about the Korean system.

okay.
Hong gil dong and Miho ceased to exist temporarily. Gil dong's return was figurative while Miho had a physical return. I think the other dramas had similar parallel living for their leads ( yu rin moving away but returning anna going back to her husband but returning for snow) ( By the way one of my favorite scenes in that whole drama is when Kang Ja ding's her unnie to release her. I bawled soo much.)
I think Ae Jung hasn't gone to Pil Joo but she's trying to ( choon hyang in seoul making friends with om tae oong's character even going so far as to accept engagement presents) and Jin's move here is akin to mong ryung selling his father's sword to buy the missing necklace. Mong Ryung subsequently became Choon Hyang's live in mooch. I really hope that's where they're going without the cohabitation.
Pil Joo? Pil Joo who?

I think most American fans still have one foot in reality while korean fans and the stars themselves definitely have a closer relationship with both knowing that they need each other to survive. I can't seem to rationalize such a belief or imagine myself truly worshiping an idol.

"I really hope that’s where they’re going without the cohabitation."

Ae Jung is supposed to be getting Jin out of his house and hiding him from the press, so there is always a chance...

That's it, I want to see adorable slumber party antics starring Jin and Ding Dong!

You know Jin never got to have sleepovers when he was a kid.

Hong Sister ending line up:
My Girlfriend is a Nine-Tailed Fox (KBS2, 2010) -Happy ending--though with more melodrama. Separation, then happy ending.
You're Beautiful (SBS, 2009) ★Separation then happy ending.
Hong Gil Dong (KBS2, 2008) ★Death of main characters, but it was more bitter sweet. There were a few separations in the mix.
Couple of Fantasy (MBC, 2006) ★Almost separation, then none Happy ending.
My Girl (SBS, 2005) ★Separation, then happy ending.
Delightful Girl Choon Hyang Separation, then happy ending.

Following pattern: Separation is Dokgo Jin recovering from surgery, and then they get together, happy ending. Probably no wedding. They don't seem to be aiming for wedding directly this time.

No one seems to account that his reckless behavior seems to be directly related to his heart problem? He's pretty sure he's going to die, so he wants to look cool to the woman his loves. (Am I cool?) To him, it may ruin his career, but he doesn't care since his life is on the line.

Hong Sisters aren't a fan of death without a damned good reason. The end of Hong Gil Dong was supposed to be poetic and though you didn't want it, they plotted out that they were going to die from pretty early in the story. You just knew that the Prince or Hong Gil Dong--you didn't have a choice. They also spend a lot of time making fun of melodramas in their meta. I'm sorry I love you and Full House meta was great and I about died seeing that.

So is Dokgo Jin going to die? I put it in the firm No column, but I'm expecting them to mess with us for an episode or two, because Hong Sisters are good with the plot twist mind rape. They are very good at making you think you are totally going in one direction, and then they don't take you there, or they do and by then you realize there was a twist at the end of it. Or you don't want it to go one way, but they take you there anyway, while you're watching behind your hand, wincing all the time, but then have to rewind to watch it properly, still wincing. So brace yourself. The ride is about the pick up speed if they can get past the bane of K-dramas--lag.

Wow, I love your analysis. I haven't wanted to be a spoiler about the ending of HGD here, but it seems that it's been hinted at more than enough... so let me say that I thought it was the only possible appropriate ending to the story as it had been set up.

And with Best Love, there's no such narrative necessity for death of the hero... it's perfectly consistent and appropriate (and more than hinted-at and set-up) within the story line for DJ to survive and be happy.

Now let's say he does need a new heart transplant. Are we going to get all 'Autumn in My Heart' and 'Stairway to Heaven' and start offering up body parts? (Fine - 'Autumn in My Heart' didn't really, but tonally it's the same and now my mind is filled with Won Bin)

I don't really like the thought....

I liked when it was sexy and fun....for the rest of the drama to focus on "Is he going to push of the daisies" (*gasp* more flowers....) or "isn't he" will just drive me insane....

I like angst but....I don't want him in a hospital bed being a noble idiot....I want him pulling her into a non-alcohol smelling bed after being an idiot....

In Summer Scent, she did, finally, after hours and hours and hours and hours of nothing happening ever...

I watch 'Autumn in My Heart' with the enthusiasm of a newbie to Korean Drama

I then watched 1 episode of 'Winter Sonata'

I can honestly not image making it through another "Season"

I popped back in because I couldn't resist commenting. I have *ahem* actually seen all of the Seasons and Autumn Fairy Tale will always have a special place in my heart. It was the first kdrama I've ever seen and it's what kickstarted this unhealthy addiction of mine. And I will forever blame Won Bin for my rabid case of Second Lead Syndrome.

Oh. And no one died at the end of Spring Waltz.

I agree, Won Bin crushed SSH in that movie.
I love The Hand Towel with every thread count of my being, but, man, he should have been second lead in that.

I saw all but Spring Waltz...Should I buckle down in Whenvember and watch it?

0

@ Jomo: Erm, my taste in dramas have evolved somewhat since Autumn Fairy Tale so I'm not gonna be one to recommend Spring Waltz. There are gaping plot holes a mile wide that make me want to tear my hair out. And not even Daniel Henney can make up for it. I've seen all of the Seasons but nothing will ever make me want to rewatch them.

Proceed with caution.

0

Exactly. He can live with an artificial heart like his super-hero Iron Man.

ohmygod mia, i made a comment on that in the last episode. i am hoping they wont turn this into a melo and take the "cliche" route. based on the hong sisters' past dramas, that wont happen right?

gaah i hate death-endings, organ-donating lovers .. the reason why i still dont wanna watch autumn in my heart and stairway to heaven.

I am planning to go to Korea next year bcoz of this addiction and if they pull a DJ-death on this drama, I will plan that trip to personally hunt the Hong sisters, everybody is welcome to join me . LOL!

Required fields are marked *

Okay, went back to rewatch. The word is "man-made heart," so I gather the pacemaker is the issue. ('sss whah happens when you drinky too much...)

It seems that simply replacing the pacemaker isn't so much the problem at hand though, because otherwise why in god's name isn't he under the knife right the hell now? *hands in air*

Perhaps dramatic climax dictates he be on the surgical waiting list.

Oh thank goodness it's not an actual "heart" that we will need to find.

Dually for Dokko Jin (he can have mine!...metaphorically) and the audience who doesn't have to debate Pil Joo's death (because really, where else is the heart going to come from in a kdrama?)

Thanks GF for the clarification!

P.S. - If the surgery gives him a 50-50 chance I'm sure it's not a matter of "surgical waiting list" but rather avoiding that "50" that would imply, you know, death.

If the term used was "man-made heart", then couldn't it be that he needs a new artificial heart? That would explain why it's a much-riskier operation than a (relatively routine) pacemaker-replacement surgery.

Required fields are marked *

I kept thinking about the man-made heart but to my knowledge, artificial heart (fully synthetic) is not available easily yet....it's kinda rare and new...undergoing clinical trials.

It could be a Heart Assist Device...but even that is a long shot...

The simplest explanation would be pacemaker because if you refer to episode 1, we saw a real heart beating during the surgery...it doesn't look artificial at all..
Then again, he had an OPEN HEART surgery...with his scar and all...pacemaker placement don't need such a big incision...which points to heart transplant.

Sigh...the Hong's sister ONLY flaw I guess ...to use medical conditions or surgeries which they are not familiar with...well whatever, I'd just turn a blind eye and accept whatever explanation they give...since this is a rom-com...not some medical drama...

Sorry to dwell so deep technically...I googled the extra information on top of what I already knew...it sucks being in this field because you tend to see a lot of loopholes...hahaha

I'm really glad you posted this, cause I've been having the same thoughts. For an artificial heart transplanted 10 years ago to still be functioning today would be pretty unprecedented. Sure, it's a drama, but a little medical realism would be nice. (Artificial hearts seem to be very much still in development, not to mention they're primarily approved as a temporary bridge to human heart transplants, not as a long-term fix.)

Much more realistic (to this semi-educated observer) is something like a ventricular assist device, or a heart valve replacement, or just a pacemaker. Those are meant to be much more long-term, and require much less maintenance than a bona fide artificial heart.

Again, it's a drama, so who knows what actually happened... but to sum it up, DJ's likelihood of survival without surgery is apparently 0% (only a matter of time), whereas his likelihood of survival with surgery is 50%. I understand he doesn't want his illness to be known by the public, but will he really choose death? I don't think a narcissist would do that.

0

I believe Jin's cardiologist said something about Jin's surgery being the most difficult of his career (which is why he was ultimately able to remember such as small detail as what song was playing).

So even if it wasn't an artificial heart or a transplant, it doesn't seem like it was just a routine pacemaker installation either.

Maybe it was a pacemaker + dealing with some kind of complications specific to Jin's case?

0

Oh, Jin! How I adore thee! >_<! Love Jin to pieces! Feel sorry for Pil-joo for all his adorableness! Kinda feel sorry for Se-ri too! Ae-jung! Get back on the Dokko Jin bandwagon! *melts into a puddle of goo* Dokko Jin, why must you be so sexy cool?!

If DJ dies, I'm personally flying to Korea to give the Hong Sisters a Dokko Jin style beat down!

So DJ needs a new heart and PJ wants AJ to accept his heart. So what if PJ gets dies in a horrible accident, donates his heart to DJ who then marries AJ with PJ's heart beating inside his chest. It's the only way I can figure out how AeJung can get both men at the same time.

Three things:

1. I had the incredible pleasure of having a dream about CSW last night. And I KNOW what you're thinking, but it was not XXX... actually, just rather sweet. I was SO pissed when I woke up.

2. The expressions in DJ's eyes in the last part of this episode (like at the hospital before he put on his glasses and his DJ persona, and when he was looking at the burn on AJ's arm) just killed me. So poignant and heartbreaking.

3. Why is DJ just gallivanting around, rather than scheduling his heart surgery, like, stat? (I guess if it's a transplant, he might have to wait, but is that really what it is?)

Regarding #3... his behavior worries me. It seems like DJ decided to not do the surgery. He was planning to go film a movie in the US right away instead. He's already made it clear he hates being sick or thought of as sick. He can't stand weakness in himself. It looks like he is resolved to let himself die, but in the meantime he wants to leave a legacy so he can be remembered as being supremely cool and awesome.

Me, I'm just trusting the Hong Sisters. I admire their creativity and thinking outside the box. I've never been let down with any of their works before (btw, HGD is their only work that I haven't watched yet). With last year's MGIAG, I feared for Miho's disappearance forever and accepted it since there was no way I think she can come back but then they made a way so I was happy for me and Dae-woong. And remember that there may be clichés in their works but they twist it around and make it all work out (lots of examples in YB). I haven't considered any possibility of Dokko Jin dying but since a lot of people brought it up, I trust the writers to do it right and make it acceptable for me. I don't see them go the makjang route (i.e. terminal health problem) since that's not their style. In terms of writing, this is really their best so far and the episodes have been solid since day 1, not to mention that they always top the previous episode (how can they do that? they're not human!) So I'm just gonna sit back and relax and wait for what comes next.

That's why he's doing everything he'd like to do now...since his surgery is a 50-50, he wants to go "coolly"....

He'd still need to get a donor, which could take forever. Probably seemed like 0-0 without Ae-jung too. Plus I'd imagine the agency has been keeping this secret as it'll basically destroy his career as no one would want to work with such a liability if he was waiting on a transplant.

It's funny and sad before Ae-jung really knew him, she guessed right about Jin and how he can't stand showing weakness in the first episode.

2. i died too with those 2 scenes. CSW eyes are so expresive. when he's suffering and strugling and feeling like that he even made me forget about his hotness (and that's saying a lot)

As awesome as he is on the big screen, it's simply lovely to be privy to Cha Seung Won being something other than the epitome of fierce masculinity and untouchable cool. As wonderful as Piljoo is, I've been gah gah for Dokko Jin from the get go because I love 완전 말썽꾸러기s (http://tinyurl.com/3pgm2ax). Other Hong Sisters dramas have tended - at least in my mind - to revolve firmly around the strong female lead, but this one seems to be the Dokko JIn show. And I love it.

because if it was a pacemaker they could make a storyline that the magnet broke it too. of course the magnet would have needed to be muuuuch stronger than a pororo toy, but hey, quite often older ladies claim their husbands or evil neighbors tried to switch their pacemakers off with a tv remote, I bet the pororo magnet version would catch too.

After being what qualifies as a commenting fiend, now my own post.

*thunk head on desk and covers said head with her arms*

All I can think about is who's going to die! I keep going back between the top four, though some of the minor friends also occasionally come to mind. Or worse yet, one does but the Hong sisters twist the knife by having the transplant reject Jin. 50-50 and all.

The safety, security and all caused me to finally start leaning my ship's bow to Ae-Jin instead of drifting between the two islands. Nice to hear for parents, but not all that fuzzy romantic around a loved one (at least in a drama). Still adorable as can be though.

I'm curious if President Moon knows of Jin's condition or not. That could really make some key differences in the later episodes. I could see Jin needing the heart transplant as a way she could twist to override his current beatdown of Manager Jang. Which would be more interesting when Jin refused to make it public (given his previous thoughts of letting the group know about his injuries). Either way, Jin is not going to come out pretty.

Gah, Girlfriday you're not the only one to notice the sweet-sadness of how Jin's only true friend is Ding Dong. Closest second would be his manager. So lonely. Though it also shows a nice reconnect with the childhood he's said he never really had at that age. Almost like he's living a past childhood through his time with Ding Dong. Yes, I like to over-analysis.

Otherwise....seriously. They must have upgraded the cameras it seems, but SO PRETTY.

Gah! My head is reeling!

Ding Dong is like the only friend DJ has. I loved their interacting - looked like they are best friends since kindergarten. CSW can really act well with children. For me this was one higlight too in this Episode

And -pleaaaseee Dokko Jin, please dont die :(

Hope there will be no dying!!

"He stops to ask how he looks, since he’s got to look the best, today of all days. She looks him up and down and says that he looks handsome, adding that even when he was petty and clingy Butthole Jin, he was still handsome.

Jin: “Remember me that way.”

this reminds me of the song "Remember me this way" :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOFGa_4quiU&feature=related

Every now and then
We find a special friend
Who never lets us down
Who understands it all
Reaches out each time you fall
You're the best friend that I've found
I know you can't stay
A part of you will never ever go away
Your heart will stay

* I'll make a wish for you
And hope it will come true
That life would just be kind
To such a gentle mind
If you lose your way
Think back on yesterday
Remember me this way
Remember me this way
Hmm……….. this way

I don't need eyes to see
The love you bring to me
No matter where I go
And I know that you'll be there
Forever more apart of time, you're everywhere
I'll always cares
(Repeat *)

And I'll be right behind your shoulder watching you
I'll be standing by your side and all you do
And I won't ever leave
As long as you believe
You just believe

Seen from the tone of Best Love, I am sure that it won't come to a tragic end. :-)
I read somewhere that CSW became dad in 1989 btw~

Dokko Jin would NOT die. ^_~
Due to the current gloomy economic environment of South Korea, people may not want to see depressing shows on TV.
I am sure the production crew including the writers will try to avoid giving a blow to the national psyche because they probably grasp the fact that Best Love’s regulars live on its fun and conviviality.

Today's episode is awwwesome!!!!!
I love how the writer draw the dots together and link one thing to another.
Today's funniest moment is when dingdong suddently pop up on jin's car's window!
I really like the little kid and how the writer use him to make the story move forward. In this drama the kid is actually useful not like other drama they are just there to show a certain character is marry or so on.
Today's episode also make me felt in love with dingdong, he soo cute and funny.

I absolutely agree. Jin is finally learning what it means to take care of others, especially with Ae-jung...

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHH, Pil-joo or Jin...CAN'T. PICK.

I can't make any predictions and I don't want to. I love the story. I'll accept whatever the women give me. I said I'll accept it!

Jin in a tux says it all!!!

CHA SEUNG WON, you are one sexy man!

He won me over and over again throughout this episode.

Now, if only the HONG sisters will not mess up with the viewers minds and hearts by thinking of killing off DOK JIN BOT, I will truly be grateful.

If they decide to put an early expiration on his heart, I don't have any choice but hunt them down in Korea.

HE IS DOK JIN!

He CANT DIE! Look at Robert Downey Jr., he keeps on popping up even after tons of scandals and got his IRONMAN HEART.

by the way thanks for the recap.

BEST LOVE - still the best out there this season!

I didn’t think I could cry that much. Even with secret garden I cried less (well maybe because when I watched it, it was full aired and I knew it had a happy ending). But the uncertainty of Jin’s safety is killing me!!!! He must live, and live happily ever after with AJ and many little Ding Dongs!!!!! I’m begging you Hong Sisters. Down on my knees!!!!!
Episode 10 was Daebak. I love the first part. Jin and Ding Dong are so cute together… “a match made in heaven” well I agree to that.  After that my head is a mess and I can only recall Jin suffering in a car under the rain, jin suffering at the hospital, jin trying to be brave in front of his fans and in front of AJ. Parenthesis – Jin looking gorgeous in a tux (me drooling for a little moment) – end of Parenthesis. Jin being sweet to AJ on the stairs, Jin hitting the hateful ex-manager (yayyyyyy) and jin tired and pained telling AJ he will protect her but he need to Recharge and giving her the most beautiful hug I’ve ever seen. I hope the time will come when I stop crying. Cause since last night I keep crying. And it’s shameful cause now I’m at my office.

I was in disbelieve when she appeared in that hideous thing, when se-ri appeared with so many dresses in that dressing room, i fantasised: this must be a set up for AJ to go cinderella on us.... and it went so well with the coffee spilling and DGJ finding it out inside Se-ri's dressing room. Dude! WHAT HAPPENED???!

Another random story:

I was having some of the Korean kids in my ESL class read aloud today, and one of the sentences started with, "Don't go..." and one of the kids said "Ddong-go" and they all started giggling, and I was like, "I know why you all are snickering, all thanks to kdramas!"

I agree that now Dokko Jin has a lot to lose but that he does not care because he want to protect her. Thanks for the recap.

Omg!! I love the last superhero line about earth moving just fine without any protection, so he wants to protect Ah Jung. Sigh.. We all knew Pil Joo is the second lead, so he doesn't have ALL.. So Pil-Joo who is as awesome as second lead can be.. Bye! I jumped the ship after this ep..
