Yoon Shi-yoon eyes drama for next project
by girlfriday
From King of Baking to King of Vegetables? One of last year’s biggest breakout stars, Baker King Kim Tak-gu‘s Yoon Shi-yoon is reportedly planning a comeback to dramaland, this time as a master of… veggies? The upcoming drama currently in development is called Bachelor’s Vegetable Store [총각네 야채가게], which is a weird-sounding title, I know, but then again, so is Baker King Kim Tak-gu, which was a ratings hit. Guess you can’t judge a drama by its title? But… I LIKE to judge a drama by its title!
The story is based on the life of a real person, a man named Lee Young-seok, who started a small vegetable store as a young man in 1990. It was a tiny space, only ten pyeong. (An old-school unit of measurement, still used colloquially to denote space, like square footage. The unit pyeong is derived from the amount of space for one average-sized person to lie on the ground and spread out their arms and legs… What? I looked it up for curiosity’s sake. Also, I’m bad at conversions, so I needed a different way to explain it.) So — about the size of a tiny studio apartment, or so.
Anyway, he went on to be a huge success, and is sort of an icon as a small-business pull-yourself-up-by-the-bootstraps success story. His store became known in the neighborhood as “The Bachelor’s Vegetable Store,” because that’s what an ajumma would call a young man who is a local business owner. He’d be too young to call “Boss” like a normal shop owner ajusshi, so they would call him chong-gak, meaning bachelor, or single man. I know, Korea’s weird with the very specific monikers denoting age and marital status, but on the other hand, one title is super informative?
Besides, if Yoon Shi-yoon is playing the owner, can you really see an ajumma calling him anything but chong-gak, other than “hey you, kid”? It has the potential for a nice uplifting slice-of-life drama, and could be great if they keep the story small and rich with the details of what Seoul was like in the 90s. Looks like it’s one to keep an eye on.
Bachelor’s Vegetable Store is in development, and plans to premiere later this year.

LOL! Just can't stop laughing now. I first laughed when I read the headline. Again when reading your explanation how you are curious on the measurement unit. And now when thinking how people will address him as 'chong-gak' in the near future. But hey, if that title brings him good ratings, then I don't think he would mind about it. ;p
Btw, thanks for the news, GF! And, Happy Friday! Weekend is coming! Enjoy, both of you! ;D

Cute, I so can see him doing the lifting vegetable at the market and stuff. Ok remind me of Thorn Bird when the ajushi work at the market.
I *secretly* hoping that Park Hyo Shin will sing for the OST. YSY such a fanboy of PHS.

Sounds good. I understand about the title. Before watching BK, I didn't have much hope for the drama. I was about to past on BK. However, after watching a couple of ep, I was hooked. Can't wait for this one. 2011 seems like a busy year for Kdramas!

i fore see vegetable refrences a head . he ruined bread for me but for the love of pete not my veggies too !
at him being the bachelor of the store . lol maybe his going to be one of those (sigh ) chaebol types who've just flown in from AMERICA and have to inherit 'stuff ' and then fall deeply in love with one cheerfully rude and couragous chica . bada bom bada bam , he actually starts showing up at work ! and there we have a drama !
lol i wrote this after reading the title . oh right , never mind the above .

sounds interesting...slice of life is not something seen much in the drama landscape...hope this works...I also hope YSY isn't getting typecasted in to underdog stories

Probably the drama I cried the most in was King of Baking. And I almost never cry in dramas. Yoon Shi Yoon has been one of my favorite actors since High Kick.

I wasn't impressed with his Baking King acting so I'm not chomping at the bit for his next foray into drama-land but I've been disappointed by dramas that appeared failproof so I'll approach this with an open mind.

I don't think this will be an underdog story as compared to what Tak Goo's circumstances in Baker King... I would think the angle of the drama will take us to the marketing strategy of a successful small scale business of a real life CEO in Seoul... And for some ways, I still think that the concept of the drama is fresh and new plus, the autobiographical slice is interesting... Commonly, real life dramas are only attributed for historical figures in saeguek drama... But on the contemporary, this is something new....

I actually like the title. It sounds like exactly what it advertises. I wonder if all food-related projects are seeking out Yoon Shi Yoon after Baker King.

I wasn’t impressed with his acting in Baker King. No offense to anyone but i consider him lucky, he shot to fame so fast with the drama (personally i thought Baker King's high rating was due to the seniors and talented actors)

Baker Kim Tak Goo is AWESOME...
Its actually took my sleeping time when I watched that series, I just can't stop to watch them.... the story flows so well... and its not only about romance like other dramas usually have....
He is also very talented and convincing in his role...
I hope this drama got the same PD / writer as Baker King.... it delivers the effect....

It's good to hear that there'll be another slice-of-life kdrama. Most of the kdrama that hit my country tv-station were all that either too ridiculous to be true or too much of romantic-clumsy act from its casts. Looking forward to this drama! :)

I love Yoon Shi Yoon!! Really looking forward to this drama. From Baker King, I am sure he'll do a fanatic job here!!! This is one of my most anticipating drama if not the most!!!
I heard it has been delayed b/c of the financial issue. Hopefully, it will go through and must keep YSY as the leading man!! Can't wait for more news.
