Lie To Me: Episode 8 Open Thread
by javabeans
This episode in a nutshell (or, as I like to think of it, the weecap): Ah-jung takes care of Ki-joon when he’s sick (food-poisoned by her leftovers). She’s miffed when he doesn’t reply to her text, so Ki-joon admits that he didn’t know how to reply — if he said he was still sick, she’d worry, but if he said he was better, he was afraid she wouldn’t come to see him. Aw. He plays a joke on her by shaking her Coke behind her back, which causes it to explode, leading to a mini-food fight, pounding hearts, and an acknowledgement of their attraction. (Ah-jung: “Is this acting, or is this for real?” Ki-joon: “For real.”)
Alas, K-dramas never allow our happy couple to be happy very long before mucking up the works. Two complicators: Sang-hee and Auntie CEO. Sang-hee gets pissy to see the growing rapport between Ah-jung and Ki-joon, and tells her repeatedly that she’s misreading the situation. He tells his brother he’s really, truly over Yoon-ju and that hyung should be happy with her — his way of pushing his brother away from Ah-jung, whom he’s starting to like.
On the other hand, Auntie CEO steps in get rid of Yoon-ju, despite professing to liking her very much, because everybody in this drama thinks Sang-hee’s a poor, feeble-hearted child incapable of mature reasoning or of handling the disappointment of not getting the girl. DUDE. He may be your baby brother, but he’s still a grown-ass person. Let him deal. So Aunt calls them all together and reveals that Ki-joon and Ah-jung are secretly married. Ki-joon freaks out, chases Yoon-ju out (leaving Ah-jung behind), and reconciles with her. Phew! Boy gets around.
Ah-jung imagines the kissy reunion, is heartbroken and withdraws, blaming the lie on herself and telling the reunited couple that she’s happy for them, then bawls her heart out. And then she goes to So-ran — who has just heard that Ah-jung knows of her marital woes — and cops to the lie. Finally!
Comments: The lie is out — thank god! They’ve gotten about as much mileage out of it as can be reasonably expected, especially since the Chinese investors have now returned home. I actually think there’s a fun drama in here, but the problem is that it’s padded with so much useless filler material that the interesting stuff gets watered down and dragged out, thereby smothering what life the drama does have. (Triple-mixed-metaphor, woo!) It’s too bad that there’s so very little plot to keep the pace moving, and despite my great liking for the leads, there’s only so much dead weight that can be carried by chemistry alone.
I’m curious to see how the story changes after this — and hope that it doesn’t go off into a totally weird direction because the writer’s run out of ideas (I’m thinking I Am Legend, which turned into a different, much more tedious drama halfway through). I’m hopeful that with the lie now out in the open, we’ll finally make some narrative progress…although a part of me is nervous that it’ll just be angst city as the golden couple gets back together.
To be honest, I can’t even tell you what a relief it was to be able to watch Episodes 7 and 8 without the burden of recaps. It helps that this week’s episodes were better than last week’s, which at some points had me banging my head against my desk with frustration. But it’s also freeing to not be stuck having to recap the many boring filler scenes — the parental love triangle, the co-workers, So-ran’s tirades, which used to be fun but which are now getting tiresome, Sang-hee’s hot-and-cold angsting — because we all know that we’re basically just watching this drama for two reasons: Yoon Eun-hye and Kang Ji-hwan.

The kiss was hot but also very sweet! Thank you YEH for making up for the blah kiss in Take Care of the Young Lady.
I also liked that Ah Jung & So Ran both exposed their own lies during their vulnerable moments - Ah Jung after being hurt by KJ and So Ran in the aftermath of a fight with her husband.

this drama is so terrible...
the storyline is bad, the writing is bad, the acting of two of the main characters(i mean yeh and the kid that plays sanghee) is bad also. even the chemistry between the two supposed main love interests is bad! agggghhhhh...
like some people have mentioned, the storyline now looks like it is just going to be a copy of kim sam soon, now that the director has said in interviews that he is going to try and change the focus of the story to the romantic plot. if the storyline is unoriginal, at least the writing should be good, but it's not. the actors lines are sparse and unwitty, with awkward silences galore. the dialogue does not flow naturally at all, i can actually imagine the whole camera crew in there with the actors watching the scene, geez.
kang ji hwan is a good actor. i know this. but i think his strength is playing quirky charismatic roles that have strong character. he always seems to have this detached air that takes away from any chemistry that he is supposed to have with his leading ladies. even in coffee house, i did not think he had good chemistry with park shi-yeon. he is a good "scene kisser" compared to some other korean male actors, so i think this is sometimes mistaken for "chemistry", which i don't think it is... (well, just my opinion, i know.) anyways, maybe with a better script he could do a better job at creating some chemistry but not here. he actually has better chemistry with yoonjoo, the anti-heroine. this is actually saying a lot, because although YEH is not the world's greatest actress, she has been able to build up her acting career thus far mostly based on her ability to create believable chemistry with her leading men. one thing she is really good at is conveying a certain sense of vulnerability in her characters, which makes her more winsome to her audience and to the viewers too... well it's just not working here.
as for yoon eun-hae herself... i am so sad for her. i did not watch the previous "lady-bodyguard" drama she did so i thought her acting had improved with coffee prince. she still had a ways to go but she still did a really good job with that role. so i'm so disappointed with "lie to me". the way she delivers her lines is just off the mark, which adds to the awkward tone to each scene, and even the crying sounds that she makes sounds fake. plus what is wrong with her stylist?? she looks so much worse than any of the other actresses in this drama, including the bit-parts! especially her hair... ugh i can't stand it.
sanghee dude just looks so much like a kid to me, despite his tall height and deep voice and floppy long hair (almost like a wig!)... i just can't even see him as being a factor at all in any of the romances of this plot.
*all right, rant ended. sorry to all y'all who are fans of YEH and KJH, this is just my humble personal opinion of course.*

Not ranting back to you but just an opinion about it...
Eun Hye's character is supposed to look bad in comparison to everyone else... she lives a messy life and she has to be portrayed like that until her character grows up. I think when she changes, we will see the change reflected in the styling of the character... right now, she is impulsive, immature and sort of naive; so really, the styling for her character is spot on...
LOL, I actually mentioned KSS without even reading anyone's comment but actually, I dont think it is a bad thing... there is MANY cliches in Korean dramas that we see again and again and never get tired of. So... why not take inspiration in a drama that was DIFFERENT and real and go that way.
The director changed (and he left his mark) so we could see the light for this drama...
BTW you know, im not trying to be mean or anything but why even read an open thread about something you seem to dislike so much? Im just saying but If you dont like it... why not stop watching it?? no disrespect to you.

I agree with you. Why (some) watch & read LTM then make a very long comment about being pissed of it. Some people love to watch they hate & have tantrums to get noticed?

Agree with both of you.
'there is MANY cliches in Korean dramas that we see again and again and never get tired of. '
I second that.
Ur honest opinion really..
why dont you go write ur story urself?
why dont you act in your dramas?
why dont you cry in films?
why dont you be the director in ur own films?
I mean, ergghh. we all know you the haters or antis here.

All I can say is wow. That kissing scene made my heart go all over the world and wish it was me.
The ex-girlfriend... I don't like either. I think she is selfish and wants what she wants without thinking about other people.
More kissing please.....
You can tell that the two's energy doesn't jive whereas YEH and KJH really explodes with energy...
Just my thoughts.

The kiss was awesome (seriously, I watched it like 20 times today).
You can tell that they have a different PD now... I mean, the quality of the drama was just raised on this 2 last episodes, especially the 8.
I wished we had this dynamic since the first episode because even though I've sincerely liked Lie To Me since its first episode (I mean, Its KJH AND YEH, I'm easy like that ;)) I did think that it was their chemistry that was carrying the drama and especially her funny personality...
But now, we have a more dramatic setting; the lie is out (not only hers but So-Ran's marriage lie too and it makes me think that they will patch up their relationship over this) and the drama will have to start to move on to deeper things.
What comes after the lie is out? She is obviously in love with him but he is confused about his feelings for her and Yoon Ju (whom I seriously hate because of the actress... her acting is damn annoying, especially when you compare her to YEH) I hope that they dont do something stupid and have them JUST forget everything and like each other... mehhh... im hoping for something...
"A la... Kim Sam Soon" You know, there is much potential for the triangle between those 3.
Accckk... Sang-Hee... sigh... I seriously love the innocent puppy faces that he makes, but he is mighty annoying with his attitude. Let me point out that HE IS NOT over Yoon Ju and even though he is taking some likeing to Ah Jung, he isnt doing it because of her but because he wants Yoon Ju to be happy. His acting was not that of a person who was jealous for her but whom was acting like Ki-Joon was someone else's property. I hope he grows up... I mean, I dont want the story repeating itself. What? Ki Joon giving up the woman he loves because of his brother's immaturity? No way, Jose... that would be too dramatic for a Rom Com.
PS: Sorry for the long post but I just had to let it out somewhere. ^_^. Also wasnt YEH's acting in episode 8, AWESOME?? Oh! and I cant stop thinking that Ki Joon's cute secretary looks like a bunny.

Weeeee for the weecap. Better than no recap. Thank you.
yay! LTM kisses. KJH & YEH...more, please!
I'm curious about the love triangle or square. I suspect that Sang Hee likes Ah Jung besides wanting Yun Joo to get back with Ki Joon. Are they gonna have a love triangle again...with Ah Jung this time? mmm
Now that the lie is out, Ah Jung is free to be pursued by both brothers! Shoo Yun Joo!
Shoo to kill joy who got nothing good to say or feel good about LTM. Beats me why you're still even reading this weecap. Can't resist the buzz about LTM?

I just woke up and watched ep 8 earlier.I think the episode was great. There was much better story flow and the relationship built up for AJ/KJ is more fleshed out. There have been more interaction of the romantic kind.
I like the 2nd lead pairing not the couple but how they have made it.If there is no angst it means the acting was bad or the story was ridiculous. It's much more believable than less say SH suddenly falling for AJ.
However the reason why I am posting again is this- why are there so many vicious comments here? You do realised that this is JB/GF's blog right? You know...bloggers blog for a reason? To do or talk about what they like or interest them.
There is no reason to go around bashing them or calling names.I am not writing this as a their rabid fan or anything.I am saying this as a mature adult. There is at least 2 other bloggers who are doing the recap. You can go...no one tied you to Dramabeans. If you had valued their wit and insight before...did you suddenly think their brains flew out of the window just because they decided to stop recapping LTM?They have a life you know.
Just because some people only come onto the Internet and just watch their fix-it takes a lot more hours to write a summary.Did you not count how many articles and recaps they have been doing for May?Geez people...grow up.You don't pay them anything and yet you write such nasty vitriolic comments.I like this OT for LTM and having to read through your comments-ergh.
I know I am probably going to get more nasty remarks after this but I just had to say it.I am on the viki team for CYHMH and Greatest Love (editing and moderating) plus 1 other daily drama-it's already killling my free/sleep time with work/family life.JB/DB have the whole blog to handle.Put yourself in their shoes before you shoot your mouth off (or in this case...start typing).
Okay end of rant.
Thanks again for the wee caps and all the comments about the episode ITSELF everyone. It's been interesting.I am looking forward to ep 9 now that we have a new director.
After having said that I am now on ep 10 MNIKSS just to watch the angsty part.At least I know I can get to the happy ending tonight.Aigoo...4 more weeks...better give me some KJ going on his knees begging for forgiveness from AJ :-)

Actually I think its only a few immature people who lash out when people provide a free/volunteer service, I know you guys on Vikki also get the same annoying comments (why are subs not up, please hurry up, why can't i see the subs etc...). Just take it as a testimony to the popularity of this blog and that people LOVE hearing debating JB and GF's take on things and are understandable disappointed that its suddenly come to an end.

Ahhhhh! Lie To Me, what makes you so controversial and buzz-worthy?
I think life's like that. Those that has mass appeal does not necessarily mean they are the most substantial or most deep or even most brilliant.
It reflects the people's wishes, dreams and crazy intentions.
Really...I just want me some ice cream and cola, hahaha!

I am glad that the lie is out. Its interesting how So ran and Ah Jung are kinda in the same position just trying to one up each other. It puts them on a good base to rebuild their friendship^^ I kinda hate the younger brother atm seriously can't you just pick one woman, also angry at ki joon for this.
The kissing is really good in this drama, what is the count now like 3?? keke. I can't say its the best drama or the worst drama, but I still like it ^o^

Point taken ck10z. I agree with you absolutely.
Once again, beggars can't be choosers. Since they've been doing all these recaps for free, then it would be to their own choosing on which drama to recap or not.
What gets people's knickers twisted is on having started the recap, went up to the 7th episode, then decided to just drop it - like a hot potato. Why bother with the recaps at all. They shouldn't have started it in the first place. I, together with many others, enjoyed the 1st 7 episodes, and looking forward to the rest.
The drama has its funny & sweet moments, which is a breather.
Who wants a melodrama during these very difficult times.
And yes, there are other blogs from where we could get a recap and there I would now go and read as far as LTM is concerned.
Good luck on your Mrs Ripley. May others find enjoyment in watching it. As for my comments on LDH, that's another story.

You know that we all start a drama with no full guarantee that it'll turn out good right? We have this idea that it's gonna be great because we watched the teasers and then after a few weeks it turns to crap so we don't watch it anymore. Same for JB & GF. Just thank them that they're still continuing watching this and makes this weecap. There are no guarantees that they'll keep recapping any of the current ones unless the dramas are really, really good and worth continuing. She did not drop this like "a hot potato". When ep 6 was recapped, there was also a warning that they won't continue. Since she has started this blog there actually have been dramas she did drop mostly because those sucked too.
BTW, can anyone please stop the personal comments against LDH?

WEECAP - Fantastic Idea! Well done! Personally I like it more than the full recap.
I agree this drama has faults and holes. (plenty of them... ha ha) But it has been fun to watch and I can forget the real world for an hour or so. It is a pretty good light entertainment! Can't wait to watch ep 9.
About the cola kiss, check out the BTS of ep 8 below. It looks like Kang ji hwan was more aggressive here than in the ep.

for me SANG HEE was only upset for what his brother had done to YOON JUN. Yoon Jun looks very happy when she opened the door because she was expecting that it was Joon Ki. And when he got to Joon Ki's house he saw them very sweet. maybe he only feel responsible for what happened to them a years ago..
FOR JOON KI i hate him for what he did... HE MAKES AH JUNG expect for something but IN the end HE choose Yoon Jun...
