Lie To Me: Episode 8 Open Thread

This episode in a nutshell (or, as I like to think of it, the weecap): Ah-jung takes care of Ki-joon when he’s sick (food-poisoned by her leftovers). She’s miffed when he doesn’t reply to her text, so Ki-joon admits that he didn’t know how to reply — if he said he was still sick, she’d worry, but if he said he was better, he was afraid she wouldn’t come to see him. Aw. He plays a joke on her by shaking her Coke behind her back, which causes it to explode, leading to a mini-food fight, pounding hearts, and an acknowledgement of their attraction. (Ah-jung: “Is this acting, or is this for real?” Ki-joon: “For real.”)

Alas, K-dramas never allow our happy couple to be happy very long before mucking up the works. Two complicators: Sang-hee and Auntie CEO. Sang-hee gets pissy to see the growing rapport between Ah-jung and Ki-joon, and tells her repeatedly that she’s misreading the situation. He tells his brother he’s really, truly over Yoon-ju and that hyung should be happy with her — his way of pushing his brother away from Ah-jung, whom he’s starting to like.

On the other hand, Auntie CEO steps in get rid of Yoon-ju, despite professing to liking her very much, because everybody in this drama thinks Sang-hee’s a poor, feeble-hearted child incapable of mature reasoning or of handling the disappointment of not getting the girl. DUDE. He may be your baby brother, but he’s still a grown-ass person. Let him deal. So Aunt calls them all together and reveals that Ki-joon and Ah-jung are secretly married. Ki-joon freaks out, chases Yoon-ju out (leaving Ah-jung behind), and reconciles with her. Phew! Boy gets around.

Ah-jung imagines the kissy reunion, is heartbroken and withdraws, blaming the lie on herself and telling the reunited couple that she’s happy for them, then bawls her heart out. And then she goes to So-ran — who has just heard that Ah-jung knows of her marital woes — and cops to the lie. Finally!

Comments: The lie is out — thank god! They’ve gotten about as much mileage out of it as can be reasonably expected, especially since the Chinese investors have now returned home. I actually think there’s a fun drama in here, but the problem is that it’s padded with so much useless filler material that the interesting stuff gets watered down and dragged out, thereby smothering what life the drama does have. (Triple-mixed-metaphor, woo!) It’s too bad that there’s so very little plot to keep the pace moving, and despite my great liking for the leads, there’s only so much dead weight that can be carried by chemistry alone.

I’m curious to see how the story changes after this — and hope that it doesn’t go off into a totally weird direction because the writer’s run out of ideas (I’m thinking I Am Legend, which turned into a different, much more tedious drama halfway through). I’m hopeful that with the lie now out in the open, we’ll finally make some narrative progress…although a part of me is nervous that it’ll just be angst city as the golden couple gets back together.

To be honest, I can’t even tell you what a relief it was to be able to watch Episodes 7 and 8 without the burden of recaps. It helps that this week’s episodes were better than last week’s, which at some points had me banging my head against my desk with frustration. But it’s also freeing to not be stuck having to recap the many boring filler scenes — the parental love triangle, the co-workers, So-ran’s tirades, which used to be fun but which are now getting tiresome, Sang-hee’s hot-and-cold angsting — because we all know that we’re basically just watching this drama for two reasons: Yoon Eun-hye and Kang Ji-hwan.

The cola kiss looks stunning in every still. *sizzle, sizzle*

I love the weecap for this episode, JB! I'm glad it takes away the burden of a full recap when there's a ton of filler.

I'll be selfish, and just say that I hope you can continue for some more wee-caps....maybe a a 2-in-1 weecap (the episodes for each week together).

Thanks!

JB. Thank You for your hard work! : O }

I think episode 8 is the best so far! It finally brings all things full circle. I think the main problem with LTM is the fact that KJH and YEH have such good Chem's together that out side of their performance the drama feels flat.

The second lead characters are very weak written, specially the little brother it reminds me of "Stars Falling From The Sky."

The second kiss I must admit that it is one of the best a have seen in a while, IMHO it is better than the dance floor kiss in "Secret Garden," what I like about YEH way of Kissing is that she totally commits to the kiss, thus making it realistic and beautiful to watched.

I am also glad that the truth is out in the open, and from this point on I hope the tone of the drama changes just a bit, but over all I am still enjoying this drama, I am commuted to see it till the end !!!!!

YEH Fighting!!!!!!!!!!!

I want to see how the story line with Sung Hee is going to play out. Is it going to be history repeating itself with both of them liking Ah Jung?

That would be interesting because I am sure this time around neither of them will be willing to give her up.

I usually read your recaps to check out your reaction and hilarious jokes anyway, so this for me is perfect - I get to weigh in, I get to hear your thoughts, but you don't have to do all that extra work of recapping all the scenes.

First things first: I love you, Park Hoon. Adorable as always.

Gah, spoilers. I agree with a comment posted yesterday: If you read sites related to kdramas, there was no way you could escape of them. the cola kiss was everywhere. But the pictures were pretty good so i thought Yay
kiss!!
But NO! I felt nothing, I dont felt the desire to squee, It was well executed but nope, zero. I watched with a straight face and I watched it TWICE. Plus I basically skipped te last part, from when he run after his old girlfriend. I just read that part.
All the above have an explationation: I dont care about the OTP.
They look good, they are pretty and hot and have chemestry, but I cant buy it yet, and its already episode 8. Please, I want to buy it! Its much fun when you love the OTP, even when they blink you squee. Not this time. I hope this change.
Again the best was Kang Ji-hwan smiling and playing with his cell. Hehehe he was so funny doing nothing.
And he has a brother remember! Last episode he appeared 5 minutes and he confused me. But why? WHY? why he has to like Ah-jung? I know this time Ki-joon will fight back. He must.
And the lie ended. The didnt squeez it enough for my taste, they could have used it a better way. But Its good that it ended.

Thank you for the weecap!

When SH met AJ, didn't he say to himself "the world is much better now that he's back" while she was looking right at AJ in the bar, and also when they were on the street and AJ was walking away, he said "if I make her stop then it's destiny". He was attracted to AJ at first sight, an attraction that started off as friendship. He was more drawn to her personality than anything else. And I understand why he was mad when he saw KJ and AJ at KJ's house, he doesn't want AJ to fall in love with KJ because he knows that KJ is still in love with YJ. SH is protecting AJ. He's been helping her, hasn't he? He's her fairy godmather. SH is slowly getting over YJ without him knowing it because of AJ. And that is also why he wants KJ and YJ to be reunited. If he wanted to redeem himself because he's feeling guilty that he is the reason of KJ & YJ's cancelled engagement, he would have done it earlier. But no, he's only consenting to it now because he doesn't want AJ to be entangled in a love triangle that might hurt AJ later on.

In episode 7 I thought that the one he was trying to "protect" was Yoon-ju. I thought that he want his brother back with her and Ah-jung was interfering and thats why he was angry. I mean not angry because Ah-jung would get hurt, angry because if she keptaround Ki-joon he would fall for her and he wouldn't return with Yoon-ju and
Yoon-ju would be hurt.
With your comment I understand he likes her from before, but i really really hope they stay in the friendship zone. Maybe this time he only likes her but he wont do anything more and they will be just friends. The bad thing: Its episode 8 and the writer can lose it.

I second the "I love Park Hoon" sentiment!!! I am totally on the PARK HOON FOR THE WIN bus!

He is the only secondary character worth a damn in the entire series! So adorable...especially when he did the puppy face to get KJH to watch the melodrama...Hahaha

Just finish watching Ep8 raw and reading all the comments. Enjoyed YEH and KJW's interactions. I feel for YEH at the end of this episode. She bravely accepted the consequence of the built up lies and was kindhearted enough to not be spiteful. Such a classy lady deserves KJW's respect and love. I'm hoping that the ending of this episode is only a misunderstanding on GAJ's part. She did not give him a chance to talk when he chased after her from OYJ's place. Guessing: KJW did not hug OYJ back because he made a decision that he cannot reciprocate her feeling and he has started to like having GAJ in his life. KJW and OYJ's overnight outing was a chance for them to talk things through for friendship and old time's sake. KJW obviously is very attracted to GAJ and he feels the pull the two leading ladies in his life. He was so stressed out on the choice he must make to be getting sick like that. Notice after the airport trip seeing how GAJ's genuine affection for Chairman Chen's wife and the praise he received from the Chairman on his good wife, he started to open up to GAJ and has a smile in his face, looking somewhat abash, but happier. He even said good morning to his secretary and staff. Well, this is my conjecture on the writer's intention for all the hints being dropped along the way. I have to believe in this for my heart not to be in such pain when YEH cried at the end of Ep8.

Thank you for allowing us to vent, and thank you for all your hardwork. Did not want you to stop the recapping but I understand the choices you must make.

I'm starting to believe KJH is going to make me watch through anything. :P Before, I never thought it possible I can watch a series because of the leads, but if every episode had a hot kiss in it, I'm never jumping the boat. Haha.

In reference to Sang Hee, I think he is very jealous of HKJ because the ladies he likes are both smitten with Hyung. He likes GAJ and feels bad for her, but his loyalty is to OYJ. I can see that although not in-love with GAJ, SH still did not want his big brother to poach on his turf. He is becoming the black knight to protect OYJ's happiness (be it with his brother or himself). I hope he does not become heartless towards GAJ and do things to intentionally hurt her so that OYJ's wedding plan to HKJ can proceed. If he does then he's not the emotional but sensitive and caring man I thought of him. Also, the President/Chairman Aunt may have a change of heart for GAJ. But I am still mad that for such a strong businessman, HKJ cannot find words to express himself to his brother and GAJ. What to do !!!!

Javabeans!!!!!! Weecap. Ingenious.

Glad the lie is out finally. I hope the writer have other plot points up her sleeve. Too painful to watch YEH and KJH just doing their best on that one tired and flimsy lie. Electric combustion gone to waste.

Please, producers out there, can you please get this couple to work on another drama? Suggested title: Be Honest with Me.

Tee-hee-hee.

I finally understand why this drama is so bad! The screenwriter is Kim Ye-ri (김예리) who is also the same screenwriter for "Heading to the Ground", the horrible drama that featured Yunho and Go Ara - the soccer one? No friggin' wonder. I keep wondering what if the plot was more interesting and less predictable. Wednesday where are you? Can you please come quickly?

Where is Episode 7 Recap? And why is it that Episode 8 is not a blow by blow account? I am sorry, I know this sound so very demanding. But, this is so sudden. We are following every drama you recapped and then it suddenly stopped. Hahay!

Loved the Ice Cream song. It's keeps running in my brain. Also, the Coke-food fight scene looked like fun and was hilarious. Finally, they do a meaniful kiss, no act in front of her friends. OMG, what a lip-lock! HOT! My computer started to steam over. kekekeke.

Just couldn't stand the scene with Ah-Jung and Yoon Ju.Ki-Joon just sits there like as major A**. Yoon Eun Hye can really cry, and she made me so upset that I had to get out the kleenex too.

Finally, no more lies please. I hope the story picks up momentum and Yoon Ju gets the boot from Auntie and Ki-Joon. Yoon Ju expects to come back after 3 years and thinks nothing has changed. She should realize that the ship has left the dock, and she is left onshore. Hope Ki-Joon realizes his mistake soon that he has chosen the wrong woman.

Thank you for the mini recaps. Please keep it up.

*smacks Sanghee* Why do YOU always get to choose the gir? You're a grown ass man, go woo the girl yourself!

*smacks Kijoon* You don't kiss other girls like that if you are in love with YJ! Get it through your thick head that the past is past!

OK, I'm done.

Thanks so much for this weecap! What a great idea! While I agree that this isn't the best drama out there, it beats the heck out of American TV these days, thus, here I am. I have a bad case of re-fresh-itis Monday - Thursday. If anyone has a cure, please let me know. I'll be over in the corner...
