Yoo Ah-in goes boy scout for High Cut

The newest baddest Bad Boy in town, Yoo Ah-in (Sungkyunkwan Scandal) poses for a playful shoot in High Cut, straight on the heels of his buddy Song Joong-ki‘s spread. I see what you’re doing, High Cut. Don’t think I’m gonna fall for your bait and spend my day watching Yeo-rim/Guh-ro MVs. I have willpower, you know!

The shoot’s concept seems to be camping-related, though there are no woods to speak of. Mostly, Yoo is his adorable self in what appears to be a losing battle with a sleeping bag. I mean, why take a hottie and then shove him into an amorphous sack? Are you mad at us?

If you’ve caught any of Yoo Ah-in’s reality series Launch My Life on Mnet (a sort of documentary-ish thing, following him on photo shoots and such, like this one shot in LA and Vegas), you know why I’m calling him the new Bad Boy About Town. He’s taken the hot-and-cold / gruff / 까칠남 thing to a whole new level. It’s morbidly fascinating to watch him diva-out or spiral in a mood, and yet at the same time, it’s kind of refreshing to see someone just speak his mind, even if what comes out of his mouth is completely unexpected. You can actually SEE him turn on the charm whenever he damn well pleases… which is both curious and totally infuriating. Heh.

When I’m watching that show, I alternately want to scold him, kick him, and give him a hug. He seems loose and free and naturally gifted, and yet so at odds with being a star. There are some actors who always live in that in-between space: they hate the camera and yet live for the camera. That’s what he seems to be, in a nutshell. Though lord knows that version of Yoo Ah-in on Launch My Life is just someone’s interpretation as much as anyone else’s.

What’s clear is that he isn’t what he appears, and then some. And then he goes and does a photo shoot like this, where he’s looking like a goofy kid, and…it’s all sorts of confusing. Yoo Ah-in: the guy with a million faces, that’s for sure.

Closed chapel in Vegas? Absurd. Vegas is the place to be to get hitched any time 24/7... if you know the right chapel and really want it to happen. Anything can happen in Vegas. Anyone can't deny that.

LOL! I'm glad your heart is in tact and unseized by an attack.

i just watched the 3rd episode of LML yesterday, and I've been so disgusted with myself for liking a guy like that (obviously I was thinking of the past characters he played). Now, I don't hate him, but he's definitely not my cup of tea. He gave a little insight on why he's so abrasive, blunt, and uses informal speech with people who are a lot older. When you act nice in the entertainment world, people will step all over you which happened to him. So, now he stands up for himself and acts really rough so people can't treat him however they want. It makes sense, but I think he needs some therapy. lol.

I'm probably one of the few people that kinda likes it when a korean celeb shows some attitude, I mean as long as it doesn't go overboard. I just watched some of the lauch my life and I feel that he's like...a real person. Well he is..but..oh you know what I mean. Underneath all that glamor are imperfect people with normal personalities like us.

he always does great photoshoots. and you're right about him being at odds with the camera, yet still live for it.

This photoshoot was actually not about camping. The concept was "Rebellious Ah In," and it was supposed to go along with his attitude on his show (I got this from allkpop.com) . But man, he looks so cute in these pictures! :D

I think this Mnet show serves only as a reminder that idealising an actor as their fan is never going to meet what truly is the reality. I'm still a fan of his work even if he's rather abrasive on the show, he tells it like it is.

it didn't feel wrong to have fangirl moments when he had the facial hair, but without it, he does look too young. (noo i don't want to be a cradle robber!!)

btw ... is he biting his thumb at the camera (a la "i do bite my thumb, sir") or is he supposed to be sucking it? i am confused.

After watching "Launch My Life pt 1" and reading some of Yoo Ah-In's writings, there is no doubt he's deep and intelligent. I think we're all sad he is nothing like his Scandal or Chil Woo characters, except maybe the brooding part. Just shows me he's got acting chops. He made us all believe in the scruffy, tough, manly fighter. What I can't figure out however, is the cranky, ill-mannered, immature little boy the real Ah-In? Or is he still acting. It's a wonder anyone's willing to work w/him. And as for him breaking contact w/Joong Ki... can't see that sweet Running Man kid wanting or needing to be friends w/Ah- In at all. Something I read suggested he appears bi-polar & I can see that. Reminds me of another bad boy actor, Joo Ji-hoon.

To some people he really comes off as a douche, but he just doesn't like censoring himself. He says what he feels and isn't afraid to let people know who he really is. He's kinda arrogant but not afraid to show it. I think he's just being real, honest and true to himself. And I find it refreshing in the middle of cookie-cutter idols nowadays.
This is what YAI says when addresses the criticisms:
“There’s a stereotype that male actors must always be cool and caring. I wanted to break that image because I hate being forced into something so restricting. I want to give people that think they know everything about a person through just one side something to think about by turning the table on them.”

if you've watched launch my life since seo inyoung, you can notice that the producer's purposefully put in captions that make the star look somewhat...unpleasant, as well as making it seem like there's trouble on the set when there isn't.
they broadcast the LA portion first, which is MONTHS AFTER ah-in first met the pd's and staff - which explains why he uses informal language with them, and just acts like himself. in the london episodes, he seems to be a lot more reserved. even when ah-in is not being rude, the producers choose to put in captions that imply that he is being rude - something that many viewers and reporters - 10Asia, notably - have called MNet out on.
all in all, lml is a pretty...bs show. the ah-in on that show is ah-in, but mnet decides to package him in a way that he'll get more hate - which is exactly what they did with seo inyoung. i'm not saying he's an angel - which he is definitely not - but he's not ill-mannered or "disgusting." he's just blunt and cynical, and doesn't care about what others think of him, and frankly, i find it pretty refreshing.

by the way: yoo ah-in is not a rookie actor. he debuted about 8 years ago, and had already tasted the type of fame he got with skks when he did sharp 1.
