Jang Nara stills from Baby-Faced Beauty
by javabeans
Every time I see recent photos of Jang Nara, I think of how her new drama, Baby-Faced Beauty, couldn’t have cast a more appropriate actress for the role. There are a number of actresses noted for their youthful looks (Choi Kang-hee, Im Soo-jung, Bae Doo-na), but Jang in particular makes it easy to believe that her 34-year-old character could be mistaken for a 25-year-old recent university graduate.
Here are a few more stills from the KBS drama, which is now busily filming in the several weeks it has before its premiere. As you can probably deduce from the props, the drama’s set in the world of clothing and fashion, with Jang playing an aspiring designer.
At the outset, things don’t look so good for our heroine, who’s poor, mired in credit card debt, and lacks the strong educational background to advance in her career. She’s employed at a fabric company (the stills show her checking the material as part of her job), but she gets fired because of her age.
However, she then gets a job at a fashion design company, which is where she meets her love interest, Daniel Choi. Her character has always had a knack for turning ordinary materials and clothing into something special, and it’s at this new job that she’s able to tap into her skills and reinvent herself as a designer. It’s exactly the type of reversal-of-fate scenario we all love to indulge in when we’re down and out, since everyone loves a good underdog story. You know, you’re trying to act classy and above-it-all on the outside, but inside you’re gloating obnoxiously, Suck on that, old boss/job/boyfriend/jackass!
Other cast members include Ryu Jin (My Country Calls), Hyun Young (Actress Butler), Kim Min-seo (Sungkyunkwan Scandal), Yoon Hee-seok (Gumiho: Tale of the Fox’s Child), Oh Yeon-seo (Dong Yi), and Yoo Yeon-ji (Painter of the Wind). It premieres on May 2.

errrmmm I can't change my job because of my age - I can't get a programmer job (.NET, Java databases etc) no matter how fantastic my . NET projects are or my MBA - who hires a 31 years old teacher as a programmer with 0 experience in the field?
you're right no one!
What if I would look like 25? you're right! All of them where I can get high scores at tests or I have the same kind of projects as they have

It's one thing for employers to not hire someone for their age (although thats wrong unless your a model or something), but can you really fire someone who already has the job and has had it for several years. I mean, the boss isn't getting any younger either....
<3 Daniel Choi, also Jang Nara looks 12 in the last picture!

Funny thing I'm sorta with you on that. Except now that I am interviewing for jobs, people mistake me as a new grad and get skeptical on my experience. I'm too old to do entry level jobs yet apparently look too young for a mid to upper management level job. I thought looking young could be a blessing, till now.
But what bothers me the most is that sometimes people look at age more than the experience or skill set.

Jang Nara wear glasses normally, though it the first time her character does also.
The last photo is from her twitter page, think she left the drama for a quick Endorsement back in China, likely something the production team going to have to work around will be her ongoing commitments to projects in China.

it done in a very clever and imaginative way, if they use the same with the drama itself, it well bodes well!
it has english sub over at the drama viikkii page, though it just really each characters name and funny title/position

Making her character 34 years old makes this whole thing work. Because Jang Nara is is 30 years old in real life. As one of the youngest looking girls out there, she can easily cover 5 years down. Of course, covering 4 years up isn't as hard to do when you are 30.
Jang nara is my favorite younger than age character, but I do think there are many others who could have done this role as well. Covering 5 years at this age isn't as strange as covering someone in high school when you are over 25.

Jang nara may have just turned 30 years old in March, but having her character's real age set as 34 makes her look that much younger than her age. So I really like this setting. It would have a different feel if she was her real age (29~30) and portraying someone 25 years old.

Another actress that would work is Koo Hye Sun (27 1/2 years old in American age) and setting as 32~33 year old character portraying someone 23 years old or so. I thing there are several actress who are 27 years old who could have definitely covered this without any problem. But I'm a big fan of nara, so I like her the best.

30 by western count 31 by Korean count..lol
age with koreans can be a very confusing thing
she born '81 anyway.
But then all the character in the drams would also be on the Korean count..so 34 would be 33 and 25 would be 24 and so on..confused yet?

She's sooo cute!!! I just found out that she was in China these past years and watched one of her Chinese dramas, "My Bratty Princess Spinoff." I haven't watched all of it, but even with someone else dubbing her voice, she did an amazing job at expressing her character and giving it life. Her facial expressions are a work of art, or anime, actually. Every time I see her and her adorable antics, I just want to squeal, "unni, you're sooo cutee!!!"
I think I remember Javabeans saying how Jang Nara was one of the most popular actresses in Korea back in the day, and that she left for China at the peak of her career, and that it was a waste of her career. However, I think she did a great job in China. She was in several successful dramas and she still looks as youthful as ever. I'm sure Korea will welcome her back with open arms. She sure hasn't lost her touch for acting, IMHO. I think she'll face some stiff competition from the Hong sisters drama, however. I love Kim Hyojin, but I'm not sold on Cha Seung Won as the male lead of a romantic comedy. Then again, I'm also not that impressed with Daniel Choi as an actor, though he is very endearing, so I can't tell which drama will be more successful. Either way, I hope Jang Nara's new drama will be daebak!!
