Kim So-yeon makes her appearance in Athena

Finally! We’ve sure been waiting long enough for this day. The Goddess of War herself, Kim So-yeon, will be reprising her IRIS character for Athena on today’s Episode 17. Truthfully I’ve been lagging a bit behind on watching Athena, but I still contend that it’s better than IRIS, at least for me. Now if Kim So-yeon and Kim Seung-woo had been a major part of Athena rather than guest spotting, it might have been the best thing since sliced bread.
Oh well. I guess I’ll have to settle for her spending an episode back with her commanding officer, and with Athena‘s resident Northern defector-turned-spy, Ki-soo (played by the awesome Kim Min-jong). Now THAT would’ve been a good spinoff. ZEUS: The Northern Trio’s Adventures South of the Border. Why won’t anyone make that show? It’s the least the drama gods can do, for having Kim Seung-woo drop out of Crime Squad. I mean, what’s a girl to do about her incurable ajusshi crush?
Kim So-yeon’s character, Sun-hwa, has apparently gone through some major changes since we saw her last. She left her spy life behind and went to live in New Zealand with her husband(!) and child(!!). But something endangers her family, and so she gets sucked back into the fight, in order to protect her peaceful way of life. I foresee much angst, and dramatic reunions. Please, can there also be a showdown between Badass Sun-hwa and Badass Hye-in (Su Ae)?
Athena had been slipping in the ratings (the weeks before settled in between 12-13%), but guest spots have brought the ratings back up this week, with yesterday’s Episode 16 bringing in 15.4%. It looks like Queen of Reversals‘ exit is helping as well. Yesterday’s episode introduced Choi Kang Changmin (also on Monday-Tuesday’s Paradise Ranch) in his guest spot, which is rumored to run the rest of the series.

Only watching solely for Kim So Yeon even though the movie version ruined Sunhwa's much-loved drama persona. Anyway, thanks for the nice update GirlFriday. As ATHENA is way better than IRIS.. in everything.. cast ensemble and ratings.. best hope to IRIS lead not to return to IRIS 2. The sequel wouldn't be able to top the spin-off.

Why'd they have to add Changmin? If they were going to get someone from SMEnt, or TVXQ, why can't it have been Yunho? Changmin's just so meh for me. Ah, the power of a big agency. =(

Thanks for posting this! I am so looking forward to seeing Kim So-yeon reprise her role as Sun-hwa. No disrespect to Su Ae at all, but like you, Kim So-yeon/Sun-hwa to me IS The Goddess of War in respect to all things IRIS and Athena. I'd love to see a smackdown between Sun-hwa and Hye-in...and I hope that Sun-hwa kicks her ass! ;)
And- Kim So-yeon looks, as she always does, absolutely gorgeous in that shot. I love the longer hair style on her! So much better than her Prosecutor Princess/Ma Hye-ri look.

Oh, and, yeah, even with its flaws, I've enjoyed Athena more than IRIS, storywise. For me, that's saying a lot, considering how much I loved Kim So-yeon's Sun-hwa in IRIS.

I love her acting and her screen presence. Yeah me,too.For some reason, I cannot connect to all the characters especially the male lead. We are supposed to feel for him the dilemma he is in, but nothing. Kind of disappointing. The Boa episode was totally boring,and pointless. The flow of the story and the holes in the plot are kind of annoying. I keep hoping for it to get better. Maybe now we are finally getting something with KSY.

Wasn't it!? I didn't watch Iris so I wasn't previously aware but man, Kim So-yeon totally rocks the spy role!
I'm glad they spent a good amount of time on this part of the story. I could care less about the rest of the cast and plot because I just can't connect with Jung-woo and (going against the majority) I don't find Jung Woo-sung stunning enough for me to try and care.
On the other hand, I love Kim Min-jong as Ki-soo! Can't wait for what's to come for Ki-soo and the rest of the N. Koreans.

I agree. I just can't care for jung woo character. he's just so goofy and doesn't look fit enough to be a spy. He looks as if he should be sitting at a computer all day. Not mention he's been outrageously stupid. everyone seems to play him for a fool.
In no why shape or form does athena even come close to iris for me. That story actually made sense with characters you care about. side note baek ji young has an amazing voice don't forget sad but sweet fit the story to a t.
They should have scrapped jung woo and had son hyek as lead even if he's the villan.

altho she was great in dr. champ and pp... iris was just... such a shock.
she was so amazing as a cold - hearted spy that when i saw her bubbly cheerful self on win win for teh first time after iris i nearly fainted.
not to mention.. she's a goddess with the dresses that only she can pull off >.<

Oh damn! I'm up for some Kim So Yeon & Su Ae bad blood! Does anyone know how many episodes she will be in? It'd be crazy if Kim So Yeon's family are kidnapped, Su Ae get's caught in between. Now, not only does she have to worry about Jung Woo and Athena on her back, she has Kim So Yeon, a nasty assassin, looking for her.
Battle of the bad@$$e$! I have a feeling Kim So Yeon would come out alive of this one though, but barely. ;-) Sunhwa ROCKS!!!
