Secret Garden: Episode 12

We’re kicking it up a notch this week, as the love square starts to get going in earnest, thanks to Seul the Master Feeling Denier. Although I guess we can’t really call it a love square, can we? It’s more like an arranged-marriage-with-cousins-and-a-MerMistress-square. Yeah. I just grossed myself out.

EPISODE 12 RECAP

Joo-won declares in his ever-so-magnanimous way that he’ll be the Little Mermaid then, and proceeds to toot his own horn about how cool and awesome he is for deigning to put himself at a disadvantage to be with her. Oh, god. I just realized it. You’re THAT guy—the guy who wants so much to win the race that you don’t even notice that you killed your horse to get there first. Tsk, tsk. You really know how to make a grand gesture all about you.

Ra-im just rolls her eyes at his cluelessness. She points out that in his grand scenario, either way, one of them has to disappear. “You like me that much, but a future with me…turns into bubbles?” And therein lies the problem. It’s made extreme here by way of Joo-won’s outlandish ego, but at the crux of the matter is the most common debate between men and women since dating began.

Joo-won acknowledges that it’s the only way their story can end: that’s their reality. He lays out the enormity of what his marriage means, to his business and his family. He even posits the fantasy scenario: let’s say he gives it all up, for Ra-im, and they run away to go live in a tiny house somewhere. Sure, they’ll be happy, but for how long? Will she be happy knowing what he gave up? He doesn’t have the confidence to never resent her for it. Does she? Damn, well now you’re starting to make sense and it’s annoying me.

Suffice it to say, this is NOT the romantic speech Ra-im needed to hear to sway her.

Ra-im: I’ll say it again: you’re right. Everything you’re saying is right. But hey, Stupid, where on earth is a woman who’ll jump at the chance to happily and beautifully cultivate a love that’ll just turn to bubbles? Nowhere in the world is there a woman who will start a love, giving up the ending. That’s why we’ll never work. We have no answer.

Joo-won counters that there IS an answer…HE’ll be the MerMistress! Did you not hear a word that she just said? Gah. He tells her that not everyone who dates gets married, so why should they let that stop them? Ha. Haha. Just because she didn’t marry every guy she dated does NOT mean that she’ll jump at the chance to be a MerMistress simply because the outcome will be the same. Do you know nothing about girls? I’d like to body swap with his therapist to knock some sense into him.

Ra-im tells him to get it through his thick skull—she doesn’t like him, so he can take his MerBubbles and shove them up his arse. Or I’m paraphrasing. Whatever. At that, he pets her on the head, changing her expression in an instant. He calls her out for denying her feelings when it’s abundantly clear that they’re mutually attracted to each other. Well, he’s got you there. He tells her to think about it sincerely before answering, and leaves.

Meanwhile, Ah-young and Secretary Kim remain at the dinner date, as they try to suss out the meaning behind Joo-won’s concern over Ah-young’s very intimate habits. Secretary Kim is in tears, hilariously having a fit over whether or not his boss and his girlfriend are having some secret affair.

She comes home and starts eyeing the chandelier in her apartment strangely, and declares to Ra-im that Joo-won must’ve put a secret camera in the light fixture. Otherwise, how on earth could he know the things he knows? Ra-im’s eyes widen, as she asks if Ah-young went about her life as usual, sans underwear and all that, when she expressly warned her to be careful. Yeah, you warned her cryptically, as Ra-Him, so how is she supposed to know?

Joo-won’s mother comes by his place to be debriefed by the housekeeper. She sees Ra-im’s map of the complex, hilariously assuming that Joo-won made it, and wonders if he actually calls Oska “oppa.” AHahahaha! I’d die happy if I could see that. It’d be better than the kiss.

She hears that Joo-won wears Oska socks, talks to himself, and gets frequent visits from Ji-hyun (his shrink). All causes for concern, of course, but the Oska socks shock her the most, heh. She also spies the fruit basket that Ra-im had brought to her house, sitting there. She orders it disposed of, but Joo-won comes home in time to save the tangerines from an untimely death.

Mother reminds him that this is still HER house, and that she can kick him out at any time. She tells him that she poured the best of everything into raising him; therefore, he ought to live up to that. If only raising children were like following a cake recipe. You can’t put all the best ingredients in and then expect Perfect Child Cake.

She pushes him in the right direction with a little threat: either start going on blind dates again, or Gil Ra-im will end up in another country. He agrees to the blind dates.

He meets a new woman at the art gallery of course, and soon after Seul calls Ra-im to meet her there as well. She tells Ra-im that Joo-won was just here, and that either way, he’ll meet and marry someone like herself. She’d rather that it be her. Oh, okay then. She acknowledges that Ra-im and Joo-won’s feelings are sincere, and thus apologizes, as if she’s already marrying the guy.

Ra-im wonders why she’s doing all this when the man she really loves is Oska. Seul admits that she did at first, and that she even started all this to return to Oska. But now she doesn’t even believe that he has a memory of their love, so she plans to do whatever she can to hurt him. So you admit that this is still ALL ABOUT OSKA. How is the wrongness of this whole plan not abundantly clear to you? I suppose you don’t care is the point.

She tells Ra-im frankly that if Joo-won is back to going on blind dates, then both she and Ra-im them are as good as out. She adds that they’ve chosen a difficult target. Well, I’d say you’ve chosen a difficult target, whereas Ra-im is the target, from Joo-won’s point of view.

Ra-im starts work on her audition tape for Dark Blood and ignores all of Joo-won’s calls all day. Don’t you know that’s just going to send him to your front door later?

And sure enough, there he is, waiting for her to come home. He demands to know why she’s been ignoring all his calls, and doesn’t take, “Because it’s annoying” as a hint to get out of her face. He whines that he couldn’t get anything done all day because she wouldn’t answer her phone, but she throws back that he apparently managed to go on a blind date just fine.

He’s surprised that she knows, and she asks all the things she learned from Seul that day, about what he gleans about a woman’s perfume use and whatnot, on a museum blind date. He counters with a glint in his eye, “Are you jealous? Does it make you angry? Should I stop going on blind dates?”

It’s actually adorable how much he wants her to admit that she’s jealous, but she doesn’t oblige, walking right past him. He calls out that he came all this way, “Because I missed you.”

That stops her in her tracks as he comes around to face her, wanting to stare at her face a little longer. Okay, that’s cute. He tells her it’s her fault for deleting the pictures of her on his phone, and makes her pose for another one. She makes an angry face, which of course just makes him hotter for her, since he said she’s prettier when she’s angry.

He tells her to hurry up and give him an answer, (to the letting him be the MerMistress question) otherwise he’ll be back tomorrow. You guys do really have the strangest relationship.

Mom has a pow-wow with Oska’s mom about how to get rid of an unwanted girlfriend. Oska’s mother, who has lots of experience in this arena, says that you have to fight fire with fire; you can’t go head to head with her, like Mom vs. Girlfriend. That’ll never do. The answer is to pit her against another woman, one who’s going to be a fierce opponent.

Enter Seul.

Mom brings her unannounced to the next family dinner, where Joo-won and Oska sit side by side, both stunned into silence by her appearance. Grandfather asks if Joo-won intends to marry her. He squirms for a second, then meets his mother’s challenge: a spring wedding will be fine. Oh geez.

Mom introduces her to Oska, who she pretends to meet for the first time. Joo-won cries foul at that, prompting her to lie to cover it up, and for Oska to walk out. She goes to find him, and he asks her what she wants him to do, so that she’ll drop this charade. She tells him to think about WHY she’s doing all this.

Seul: The thing about women is, the most common of women can become a queen, and the most rarefied woman can become a maid…according to how she is treated by the person she loves.

Nicely put. But the statute of limitations on a broken heart only goes so far, honey. After a certain amount of crazy behavior, the rest can only be blamed on you.

After the meal, Joo-won tries to talk his mother out of the match, insisting that Seul is in love with someone else. He doesn’t mention that the other person is his cousin, which he really should, although I suppose that’d ruin Oska’s chances of marrying her. But, then, what’re the odds of that going down now? Mom decides that she’s just perfect, (on paper, of course, which is what matters to her) and that’s that. Joo-won leaves in a huff.

He goes to see his hyung, rushing to try and clear up the misunderstanding. He insists that he didn’t invite her there, and that it’s all his mother’s doing. Oska knows but stays mad at him, making Joo-won whine, “why?” like a little puppy. I do love that Woo-young is the level-headed hyung to the ever-petulant Joo-won.

The reason he’s mad isn’t what he thinks: he’s mad that Joo-won insisted on being rude to Seul and giving her a hard time in front of their family, by letting it slip that she knows Oska. He chastises Joo-won for always thinking only of himself, and never how his actions might hurt anyone else.

Ra-im happens to call him at that moment to move their training session around, and he takes the opportunity to rub it in Joo-won’s face, and asks to see her. Joo-won’s sparkly panties get in a bunch, as Oska says that Ra-im is the only person who can make him feel better right now, and runs off to meet her. Burn.

Joo-won retaliates by calling Seul and asking her to meet. Heh. He asks her what the real deal is between her and Oska, and she coolly replies that they’re past lovers, nothing more. He doesn’t think it’s so much in the past, and tells her that Oska is still in love with her.

She’s unmoved, declaring that she’s over that hormone-driven era of her life. She doesn’t see a problem with their marriage even with Ra-im in the way, as she isn’t the type to meddle in a husband’s “private life,” making Joo-won’s jaw drop at the extent to which she is a cold and heartless high society Bride Bot.

Over an open grill and pig skins, Ra-im and Oska have a chat, and he admits to having her meet him just to piss off Joo-won. HA. He tells her that he’s dated a LOT of women, but still doesn’t understand them in the least. The first and last woman he ever loved has returned as his worst demon, and he’s at a loss for how to deal with it.

Ra-im tells him that all demons are wronged beings in some way, and that some women continue to show their love through their intense hatred. Well, that’s certainly a true statement about Seul, although the spectrum of love/hate is all relative, eh?

There they sit, the four of them on each other’s dates, opposite the wrong person, and brooding over the other.

Joo-won’s sister heads to the department store lost in thought about her last encounter with Jong-soo, when she gets into an altercation with a guy who tries to smoke in a non-smoking area. He raises a hand like he’s going to smack her (dude, take a chill pill) and Jong-soo appears out of nowhere to block the guy’s hand and be the big hero. She swoons, and he exits, in a hurry to go yell at Joo-won.

It turns out that the action school was in a whole bunch of debt, and when Joo-won was Joo-wonda, he happened to intercept a debt collection call, and paid half of it off. He did it to keep Ra-im from finding out about the debt, and only paid half because he knew Jong-soo would have a fit about it anyway.

Well, you thought right, because Jong-soo ain’t havin’ any of your pity/help/investment or whatever. He demands that Joo-won take his money back from the bank and storms out.

There’s other drama at the action school, as two newbies decide to drop out because the training just got too tough. Ra-im sends them off with good wishes, but fights back tears, as she feels personally responsible for not being there to help them stick through it.

Ra-im’s sunbae Jung-hwan comes to see Joo-won and tells him about the action workshop coming up. The location hasn’t been decided, so Joo-won volunteers to take care of that himself. Joo-won asks why he’s helping him get close to Ra-im (because he has lots of money, of course) and also why he uses banmal with him. Jung-hwan: “I’m going to be 31 this year.” Joo-won: “I’m 34.” Whoops. He sits up straight and switches to jondae right quick.

Oska plans for his Christmas concert, and finds Tae-sun at Seul’s studio to tell him that he’ll be a guest performer onstage. He asks after Seul, but she avoids running into him, and watches him leave.

Joo-won heads to the mountains to do an inspection of the new resort that he’s building, and the action school pulls up to the villa for their workshop. Joo-won greets them with a smile, while Ra-im and Jong-soo both look at him with the classic at-Joo-won look: surprise peppered with much exasperation. Jung-hwan uses the opportunity to switch right back to banmal with Joo-won, and takes the blame for planning the workshop with him.

Joo-won pulls Ra-im aside, asking her what her answer is, and why she’s playing so hard to get. He asks what she did with Oska the other day, making mock cooing noises to simulate what the two of them sound like when they’re flirting. Ha. She says it’s none of his business, to which he shouts, “But WE’VE KISSED!”

Hahaha. You really are a five-year old about the kissing. She covers his mouth in a big hurry, and they go inside. Jong-soo announces to everyone that his post as the team leader will go to Jung-hwan next year, since the rule is that it rotates every year to make sure that the action school is never without a leader in case of injury or death. Well that’s morbid.

Joo-won joins Jong-soo outside to say that he’s a little bit cool, since as a leader himself he knows that giving up a position of power is difficult. Well, it’s harder if you’re a control freak.

He asks if it’ll ever be Ra-im’s turn, and Jong-soo replies that she has the potential, as he’s been saying about her all this time. Joo-won asks if he can’t just fire her then, before she dies some fiery death. Jong-soo says that he’s thought about it, but action is everything to Ra-im, and he has no right to take that away from her. Joo-won decides that he’ll have to do it himself then.

He heads back inside to find Ra-im already asleep on the floor, amidst all the other guys, some of whom are sleeping, while others stay up to drink. He steals blankets for her and himself, kicking the guy sleeping next to her to make room for himself. Heh.

He lies down next to her, just quietly watching her sleep, with the happiest look in his eyes, at just being able to look at her face. It kills me, that look.

As he watches her sleep, she starts to have a nightmare, and he puts his finger on her forehead to wake her up. She stirs awake and they lock eyes, suspended in the moment.

They have a conversation in voiceover, so essentially one-sided for both, although they answer back and forth as if they hear each other.

Joo-won: Why is it always so grim in your dreams?
Ra-im: Because in my dreams…you’re there.
Joo-won: With me…even in your dreams…are you not happy?
Ra-im: Come anyway. Tomorrow. And the next day.

COMMENTS

Aw. So. Sweet. Hey, a girl can’t help how she feels, no matter how much her head is saying no. Sometimes that just fuels you in the wrong direction, which is, as anyone can attest, the perennial problem with bad boys.

What’s funny about this couple is that they’ve dug their own stubborn graves, and now they’re totally stewing in their own feelings. They’re falling ever so precipitously in love with each other, all the while declaring how it’s never going to work out. Well, when you make it so difficult to even begin, how will you ever find your way out?

The best part about this episode is that it makes one thing very clear: words bad, silence good. Their banter is almost always a hindrance to them, as they usually end up saying the worst possible things to each other if given the opportunity. Joo-won especially has the WORST case of foot-in-mouth syndrome I’ve seen in a while. But when given a moment of silence, their feelings are undeniable, and no amount of babble can cover over that kind of sizzle.

Snap, Crackle, and Pop.

I've finally caught up with this drama!

While I was shopping yesterday, I actually came across a pair of sparkly blue runners that would totally go with Joo Won's old track suit! XD
And guess what? They had it in leopard print too!!
I couldn't find pictures on their website though...dang, I should've snapped a picture when the sales wasn't looking XDD

Thanks for the recap! <3

Oh... my... gosh... does anybody see besides me? all the strides our 5-yr old joowon is making that little brat... the dynamics he has with his hyung Oska... the vibe was so different... from snappy competitive dongsaeng he earnestly begs Oska for forgiveness (like a 5-yr old... only without the nasty spiked shell), like Seul remarked his view on love has completely changed (she mocked him gently "wow... so that's how Gil Ra Im has changed you?" because you were the one who taught me that hormone-driven "love" is the dumbest reason to get married for), his approach to help Ra Im (though still lacking) changed so much... he tried to pay off the debt anonymously... and if that didn't work, only half of it because he knew Ra Im and Jongsoo would throw a fit like the latter eventually did when they find out... and even after that he tells Jongsoo but hey i'm not giving this for free as a pity thing... i expect you to pay me back... i just don't want Ra Im to have to pick up one of those calls asking for repayment (to concede to Jongsoo's burning-hot pride)... like suchhhh a 5-yr old.... and all because he WANTED TO HELP... not in the most perfect way but you can't deny his sincerity...

I'm happy for Joowon... our 5-yr old boy/Collin is growing!! =D

ah yes! just before everyone's favourite star-at-Ra Im scene, I thought the fact that he didnt scream bloody murder at the guys who had fallen asleep in the room and force them to move out so Ra-Im could sleep there, showed IMMENSE maturity hahaha. Instead he just stole a couple of blankets.
let's hope he keeps growing and actually makes Ra Im HAPPY instead of hurting her all the time!

lolll i dunno about IMMENSELY mature but yea i agree hahaha he's still a kid, but a kid that's growing bit by bit since ep. 1 nonetheless, so by now, significant strides have been made... hahaha at that scene i thought he was going to throw a fit again though lol since all the sunbaes had sheets and there she is sleeping on the floor with only her jacket to cover her. our 5-yr old Joowon/Colin is mad but can't throw a tantrum without waking Ra Im up because she's sleeping so soundly so he steals blankets instead XD hahaha aigoo our chodaengie (elementary school kid)

I just had an image of Ra-im and Joo-won as little kids on the playground, Ra-im dressed as a tomboy and Joo-won in his little boy suit. He'll still be all, "it is your honor to give me valentine's day chocolate." I snorted milk laughing.
Love the recap! Thanks, girlfriday!

that explains why these two just couldn't part ways! they have a brain-to-brain connection. (would've said "heart-to-heart" but that's cheesy.)

it's as if when they speak to each other, their voices only serve as noise that hinders the perfect meeting of their brain waves. (okay, that's nerdy stuff. i stop.)

agree...danger-meeting-danger...they are two risk-loving people...they are cut from the same mold. they just dont know it themselves..hehe...thats why JW always say she's prettier when angry; he loves to provoke her and get her all riled up. somewhat juvenile, eh? i wish they could re-channel all these energies to some worthwhile endeavor and make full use of his money/connections and her heart/talent in the end :-) they could achieve so much together ;-)

min, yes...they do have this uncanny "connection" -- and not just because they swapped bodies for a while :-)

The reason why joo-won doesn't tell his mom that seul wants to marry oska is because it'll make his mom even more determined to make joo-won marry her. If seul marries oska he'll have a political and economic advantage and a coupe would be even easier. Joo-won is already at a disadvantage b/c of rumors of him dating a commoner who has no economic/political advantage to his family.

Joo-won is wrong in the sense that he believes that he has to choose between his heritage and his girl. What he has to do is eliminate his uncle and form an unshakable alliance with oska that allows him to be heir. Then he can keep both. The family will have to choose between accepting the girl or losing their only option for heir. The family would sooner accept the girl than lose the heir. Hard to do, but in a drama, there are limited choices for heirs, the uncle will likely trip himself up, and oska will preoccupy himself enough with his entertainment industry enough that Joo-won can pull it off. Joo-won has his work cut out for him. Good luck. Fighting!

EXCELLENT observation! My thoughts exactly! JooWon is not thinking straight. If he thought sensibly he would not fanny around at the office.

He's completely underestimating the V.P.!

You should never underestimate anyone especially those that work under you. With his temperament, I'm surprised that the V.P. hasn't been more scrupulous about his schemes. Well, it's not thaaat KIND of drama.

For someone who looks so "smart and proper" he is a nut-job. If you think about it, he completely forced himself on RaIm since the beginning. He's the one that keeps coming and going as he pleases. Everything is about him. He is such a delusional-megalomaniac-narcissistic...that like gf I almost start to see sense in his nonsensical logic!
He's falling really hard in love with her...and to someone that can do as he pleases and get everything...it must be driving him to insanity.

I also realized in this ep...that JooWon HAS NO POWER or ASSETS! Everything is owned by his grandfather and controlled by his mother...and even his image....v.p has that on lock. He's a slave to everyone...and now a commonner has him a steel leash....wow. Talk about a haaaard life. LOL

Joo-Won's too preoccupied with stalking Ra-Im for him to think straight when it comes to business. And you're right, technically, he owns nothing. Oska's better off for chooing his music career. Now although he could've used family money to catapult him to fame, he can actually break off from the clan and make it on his own. I wonder if Joo-Won can survive doing that.

Nice strategies you've formed here, but with Seul in the scene and messing up everyone's relationships, I think an alliance between the cousins is a difficult thing to achieve.

Loved this ep, all the interactions between each of the pairs of the arranged-marriage-and-mermistress-square were sweet/honest including Raim/Seul. Is it just this ep? Or is it every ep that they like to focus on just two people in one scene?

And like how Raim can never disagree with Joowon's logic, it seems to be the case for Seul, and the whole show in general too.

Joowon's motor mouth is his roundabout nerdy way of getting the girl! Without it, the show would not have been half as witty/interesting. The things he says.....

"bu zai fu tian chang di jiu, zhi zai fu chen jing yong you", is this the right phrase to sum up JW's thought?
If we agree, then Ra -Im go for it.

Hope to see them date on Christmas....and bring joy to us.

Same with me!
Watching it without subs, which means you don't focus on the words at the bottom of the screen, but actually watch the characters, helps me notice other things.

1...Didn't anyone else laugh very out loud at Director Park's dramatic chair spin when he went to see JW's psych?
I have to say Lee Byung Joon is fantastic in this role.
I wonder how much is written vs what he brings to the role. He and his assistant are hilarious together.

2...I also noticed that Baek Seung Hee, who plays Park Chae Rin, is gorgeous. It is kinda cool that she is playing this character for laughs. She does the nasty face rather well.

3...The foam kiss in Key Lime's memory is NOT as one sided as how we saw it. She remembers it with less antagonism and more longing in response to JW.

4..Did anyone notice that HB is hot? I mean, like, really? Just checking...

Thank you for the recap, girlfriday! read it during work and had to take breaks so I wouldn't laugh like crazy!

Joo-won's mom finding out that Joo-won has referred to Oska as his oppa was hilarious!! After that I imagined an awesome ending for the series: the mom thinks that Joo-won is secretly in love with cousin Oska (incest! and hence the therapy sessions) and is so worried that he might act on his feelings that she allows Joo-won to marry Ra-Im! (anyways, anyone think it is sad that the housekeeper reports to JW's mom abt his doings. no one can be trusted!)

This is the episode where I really felt some progress (AND they varied the music).
1. Ra-Im tells him exactly what I've been thinking: "Stupid, where on earth is a woman who’ll jump at the chance to happily and beautifully cultivate a love that’ll just turn to bubbles?" Even though he offered to be the little mermaid, what Ra-Im is getting is no different than what he offered before. Though I have to say that Joo-won's argument with the fantasy scenario that he does give up everything is a very strong one. Money is also one of the leading causes of divorce. I don't think JW can live the sort of lifestyle that Ra-Im lives. I think in the end, the grandpa may save the day. His grandpa seems to be into the lovey-doveyness and into just living life. However, there remains the problem of how to deal with Joo-won's extravagance on a daily basis.

2. Joo-won has gotten a bit gentler and more understanding- from what i've seen in his scenes with Oska (when he was trying to tell Oska not to misunderstand) and Seul (when he was trying to tell her that Oska loves her). It must suck for JW to see Oska and Seul not making it work. They love each other AND are the same status. Only thing preventing it is their inability to speak to each other openly and honestly, which is much easier to overcome than social status. How many years has it been now? I would estimate like 8 years. And JW only paid half of the debt because he thought JS may not like it. And he's nicer to JS! (good, they will probably end up as in-laws...) And he didn't throw a fit at Ra-Im sleeping in a room full of guys.

(btw, I'm still confused at how he got accepted to action school just by saying "I make a lot of money". )

Hee-won is right, she is the most normal person in her family. I wonder what their dad was like. I bet he was a nice guy forced into an arranged marriage with that shrew.

I wonder what the life expectancy is for people who marry into their household. Isn't Mrs. Park worried? She's now the 4th wife. And the two daughters are without husbands already.

Seul should know about that. Whoever among the two cousins she chooses it's an unimaginable end that awaits her - after she bears a child, probably.

And also Ra-Im. Is it either she dies doing a dangerous stunt or pass away from the sheer reason of marrying into that chaebol family?

I think oska's mom is divorced and the grandpa may have divorced his previous wives- but that still doesn't really doesn't bode well for the future daughter-in-laws.

And I wouldn't be surprised if after RI marries JW that JW's mom would try slip a little something-something into the RI's porridge. DX

so basically, through whatever means, the shelf life of marriages in their household is short. this could explain why Joo-Won does not believe in long-term relationships. assuming that his dad and his uncle were from rich families as well, it's understandable how little faith he has in relationships with that of a different social status. no wonder why he thinks of marriage as a business deal - he doesn't see how love can make it work, and thinks that the way he can make the most out of it is if he obtains financial gains from it.

We also got to see how vulnerable JW is, really, at least that is how his 0ma and grandpapa make him seem.

But is he that dependent on their cash?
Let's say he pushes back and decides to openly date Key Lime, possibly even get engaged?

Are the stockholders and shoppers that likely to call for his dismissal? And if his family wants him gone, which makes no business sense what so ever, wouldn't he be a great addition to any of his competitor's companies?

Yes, he would have to give up his beautiful, spacious, lonely home. They could kick him out.
But he really wouldn't have to give up the lifestyle. He doesn't hang with any of the other rich kids. His life is really sad. ;(

Let him have his Key Lime, dammit!!

Even if he manages to stay rich, I think unless he gives up some of that lifestyle, it would not be a working marriage. Ra-Im will expect him to learn to be more frugal like her (she will be annoyed with him every time he decides to buy out 10 seats just because he doesn't want people sitting next to him or if he decides to buy a whole beach because cousin Oska wants to park his boat there) and she would be too proud to spend his money. What will they teach their kids? (For the love of God, please let their kids be more like Ra-Im so they can have friends) I'm really curious to see how this relationship will resolve itself because it isn't just a clash of social status and money, but of principles and a way of life.

if he's willing to marry for his inheritance, then probably yes.

in the real world, nobody cares who the rich people marry into. in kdrama world, it matters a lot. ;) such as it affects the image of the family handling the business,. such as the way they make decisions ~ somehow, some way, it has en effect on the management of the company. in real world sense, I don't know how it can happen.

But he really wouldn’t have to give up the lifestyle. He doesn’t hang with any of the other rich kids. His life is really sad.

if he loses access to custom-made, designer tracksuits, that would make his life miserable. ;)

I am, sniff, so sad now. Of all the tragedies that the fans have been guessing at for the show's end, nobody predicted this fiendish and alarming and wretched possibility.

How can you do that to poor JW? (sob, sob)

I interpret Joo won's stupid mermistress speech as "I like you but cant marry you, but I still want to sleep with you so I still want you to date me". Stupid ass.

I am in the Oska and Seul's camp. I think they are just set up by the writer to be props in the main story but they deserve a separate story themselves.

I dont blame Seul for all her actions, because everytime she confronts Oska, either he put Ra im between them, or he say that they are already over or he will say something to hurt her. He never extend to retain her, I think that will happen in ep 20....Arrrrghh..

OHMYGOSH...i am addicted to this drama. personally more because the character, the story and the chemistry between two leads. never in my life can imagine that HJW and HB would create this spark like the jacket...lol.

And i admire Ra im for not wasting her tears for unnecessary things. most of K-drama heroin always crying for smal reason. but Ra im, even in her most painfull experience, did not. and i believe' that's where the admiration from Joo won came. that she's strong woman and doesnt need to be pampered all the time.
he already busy to admiring himself for that...lol.

but at the end, now he's dying to be needed by her, which always not happen till this day..

This drama is supposed to be a fantasy drama right? but why haven't we got the fantasy vibe that was in the first few episodes anymore? the writer and PD seem to have forgotten all the magical things they had when they began the story. Now this is just another romance drama....it's like the body swap and everything surrounds it is not something special that JW and RI would try to figure out, instead it became just a random thing someone might encounter in everyday live and forget. I think this drama is inconsistent about it's premise, it's not like MGIAG which keeps the fantasy all along in the story line.

Oh I forgot to thank girlfriday for the awesome and super fast recap. Thanks a lot girlfriday. What do you think about this drama missing the fantasy element?

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

yeah the missing fantasy element bugs me too since that is a big advertising point and it makes the overall drama look really uneven to have some fantasy bits, a big fantastical switch, and then nothing.... I think the writer had this great idea to do a drama with a fantasy element but when she actually got to it, she didn't know how to write it in. Body switches are particularly hard because you've got to convinced the audience that one person is trapped in another person's body and have to keep up the chemistry despite the switched roles. And with having to write the drama as it is airing and the time crunch for filming, I think she just wrote what she knows best and said to heck with the fantasy element. Though I hear that the two characters will switch again. Hopefully the next switch will have more purpose.

I haven't seen much progress. Joo Won hasn't shown a redeeming side where he was just kind without some ego agenda. It was there when he searched for her in the forest, but now it's all about ego.

I hope we won't have to see an overnight full transformation of his character.

Aww yey. This kind of romance is refreshing, the love at first sight and live happily ever after stuff are fine once in a while, but I like that both characters are realistic people and know their own situation. Even knowing that they have a slim chance of a future together, and it's not going to end well, they can't help but fall in love anyway. How sweet.

Thanks for the awesome recap. JW is such an adorable jerk. How can he be such a brute with words and yet, look at RI in such a sweet, loving, worshippy (is this even a word? LOL) way. He is killing me <3. I completely understand why RI is about to go to "the dark side".

Oska and Seul's drama is too much for me, I hate the "guess why I'm pissed at you" game. Blegh.

I really dislike Suel, she remind me of the main character in the movie "Misery". So much hatred in her heart because he didn't defend her character when the guy claims that she a groupie whore, I don't know if he too or not but she smell whorish to me, of course not in the physical sense.

Taber, Taber be a lady, to be fair I guess Oska get what he deserve to be on the defensive because Binne didn't want to be one of her puppet on stage, why should he care about her feelings, she just playing everyone because she was too stupid to know she was being played, sorry it not like Oska wasn't sleeping with woman left in right through those 4 years of separation so I'm not holding out on some great love their think they lost, just mediocre sex.

Ra-Im's résumé showed she had various part time jobs before she became stunt woman. I believe JW frowned becauase it shows she has gone through hard times all alone since she lost her father.

When i was watching the raw, in the first part, when i looked at Ra-im´s face, i was thinking "I bet he is saying something stupid again" (you know, i dont understand korean)...and he was. I´ve thinking the same as you gf: they work better together when they are in silence, specialy him. But i have to say that in some parts of his speech he has a point...

Ah, the stare. how sweet. Ra-im, please, believe in Joo-won eyes. They are te ones who say the truth. Forget the mouth, only useful if he is going to kiss you (properly).

Thank you so much for the recap!!

Daniela, you got it down pared. Yes his eyes!! The look in his eyes when he petted her oh her head and stroked her hair at the start already killed me, and it was like, only 3 mins into the ep?? and the ending scene... oh my gosh i was like rooting for him "kiss the girl!!! NOW! before you say anything stupid!!"

I find myself checking out whenever Seul is on the screen. And not because Kim Sa-rang is a bad actress, like many of those rival loves in previous dramas. No she plays Seul very well communicating her vulnerability, pain and jaded side so expertly. However, the character Seul is very difficult to support. I sympathize with her. Her love fell apart, even when both loved each other. But she doesn't show sides of her that indicate she's a good person that deserves a "happy ending." I know that seems harsh because everyone deserves a happy ending with love and marriage--the full shebang. But that doesn't get me to care about her love life. I just wish we would deal with her problems more quietly and thus we wouldn't spend so much time seeing her brood. Or let me see how she's not a rotten person to the core. (I get that she was a lovely woman before Oska broke her heart, but everyone is a sweet person in love, that doesn't mean she won't push down a child blocking her path.
