Mary Stayed Out All Night replaces writer
by girlfriday
Looks like drama in K-dramaland. KBS’s Monday-Tuesday drama Mary Stayed Out All Night, starring Jang Geun-seok and Moon Geun-young, has announced the departure of its screenwriter, In Eun-ah (Goong, Love and Marriage, Hon). She’s reportedly left the production of her own accord, and will be replaced by new head writer Go Bong-hwang (18 vs. 29, Nice Girl Baek Il-hong).
The announcement comes on the heels of Mary‘s lowest ratings yet: it dipped down to 5.7% this week, up against heavy hitter Giant‘s finale. While it might be too late to save this sinking ship, perhaps it makes sense that if there was ever a time to make the switch, it’s now. Maybe with Giant gone and some new blood in the writers’ room, the production is hoping against hope for a ratings revival in its last leg.
The changeover was initially suppressed when rumors of on-set discord surfaced, but it’s now been confirmed that writer In Eun-ah has decided to leave. Just how much of that decision was really up to her is of course anybody’s guess. The drama isn’t exactly what you would call well-executed, given the potential it had with its cast. It really kind of pains me to think of how awesome it could have been, if the writing had been sharper. Suffice it to say, I’m not surprised that the writer was blamed, but I AM surprised that they’re risking the change this late in the game. I guess we’ll just have to tune in to see what happens to the story, once the dust settles.
Go Bong-hwang has taken over the script starting with Episode 11, which airs Monday December 13, along with Episode 10.

Yay? The writing is definitely the weakest part of this drama so I can see why they want to change writers. I've skipped most of the episodes just because nothing was really happening up until recently. Still, I'm unsure about how this will turn out. The show can get better, worse(though I really don't know how that can happen), or just stay at the same level. I guess I'll just have to watch to find out.

I already lost interest in ep 1. Definitely wasted the potential of the cast and relied too much on star power to not develop the script strongly.

let's see if this change in writer will make me finally watch the drama instead of just reading recaps, which by the way is more entertaining than the actual drama :)

hi there, pixie!
was wondering how u know the drama is not entertaining when u said that u have not watched it yet because u have only been reading the recaps?
i think to be fair, you should watch the episodes of the drama so far THEN decide if you feel the same way...
like i did with Secret Garden...i watched the first 4 episodes but even after watching them, my initial opinion that i will not like it DID NOT change at all...
in fact, after watching the episodes, i was EVEN more NOT interested in it because (in my humble opinion) the utter inanity of the whole body swapping concept in the drama that it overpowered everything else in the drama for me, including the good acting...

sorry, i meant to say "to finally continue to watch". i watched 'til episode 4 and my love for JGS wasn't enough to let me hang in there. i didn't feel like investing more time to it but curious as how the story will play out.
to each his own i guess...whatever floats our boat 'coz i enjoy Secret Garden with all the hilarity and good acting. to me, i find the double marriage scenario coupled with bully dads and self-absorbed ex-gf more ridiculous than the body swapping concept. at least i know i'm watching a fantasy drama.

hmmm...i agree that to each his own...but if you think that the bullying dad and self-absorbed exes are more ridiculous that the body swapping concept, then perhaps you haven't experienced much of life...
if i were to share with you my life story,
complete with a member of my family (a 4-year-old child) who was kidnapped, tortured and murdered at the hands of people who hated the child's father over 40 years ago (the murderers have never been caught);
the mother of the child became clinically insane as a result;
star-crossed lovers on both sides of my family causing endless family discord (because of parental disapproval among others);
too many exes on both sides of my family to count (some self-absorbed [and in my humble opinion should be confined to the mental institution], others just fine);
some of the most prominent political, economic and religious figures in my country coming from both sides of my family (and thus have too many [savoury and unsavoury] stories to share);
those are just some of the many facets to both sides of my family.
that is why for me the body swapping concept is much too much fantasy for my taste and too little cerebral substance for me to take away, although i would not say that the whole drama is terrible because of it...
i just have a preference to investing my time and attention on something that i can share with my children for them to learn more from than simply to fantasise about...
having children does affect us in that way, i suppose...

i forgot to add the following :
from both sides of my family (my mother and father)
there are too many of the following to count :
broken marriages and missing parent/s, resulting in single-parent families,
wayward children
(a cousin of mine was imprisoned at the age of 14 for fighting with a weapon and injuring some people while he was a member of a secret society),
school-dropouts,
the unemployed and living basically on welfare.
But thank God, as in every family, there are the ones who have beaten the odds and have attained differing levels of success.
so, my point is - i have become unfazed or immune to shocks (so to speak) to the system from life's experiences and i have also become more cynical and less tolerant of dramas/movies that dwell mostly on fantasy, that do not challenge me emotionally, psychologically, spiritually, intellectually...
but...let me emphasise that this is just MY opinion...
i do not expect or hope that anyone would agree or disagree with me because it is inconsequential... ;)

Hey!~ I've got the same thoughts as most of you.
I was waiting for Mary and didn't care about SG but now I'm totally into Joo-woman&Ra-Him chemistry!! This is a hit drama for me but Mary...Well at least I'm watching it but that's cuz Geun-Suk's in it.There's no other reason^^"

I am crossing my fingers this will be a good change. Regardless, I will continue to support the holiday couple because they've thrown themselves so completely into their roles, despite the bad writing.
I am waiting for Secret Garden to finish airing before I watch it. I can only take watching one series at a time while it's airing.
I am not agreeing or disagreeing with the previous comment about bashing the series, but I do wonder when people say a series is stupid or boring even though they haven't watched it. I can understand not watching because you don't like the actors or the story doesn't interest you, but how do you actually have a solid opinion without actually watching it?
Also, I do think people are swayed by bloggers' opinions. Not always the case, but often enough. I read a lot of online sites about Kdramas and I feel like this site in particular, the readers (or at least the ones who make comments) seem to "worship" the bloggers. I can understand being appreciative of how hard they work to provide us with news and recaps, but sometimes it's a little over the top.

i don't know about other readers/posters but i didn't feel the same way with bloggers' opinion, and most people here, about My GF is Gumiho. I watched the entire drama but mostly fast forwarded. I tried to like it but it didn't have the "feel" to sucker me in. Playful Kiss on the other hand, despite it's low ratings and comments on how its non-plot driven, was more enjoyable to me even though i've watched all other versions.
a lot of people who come here i think share the same taste in drama with JB so they tend to agree more. i've been coming to this blog since 2007 and i can say that i don't share the same opinion all the time. but i come here because it's nice to read good writing from all type of recappers/reviewers, not just JB.
but i agree, how can you really form an opinion on a drama that you haven't watched? :)

i agree, i dropped My Girlfriend is a Gumiho after ep7 or so, it just didn't pull me in, i loved Miho but everything else somehow didn't draw me in.
i gave Mary Stayed Out All Night so many chances, i watched all the episodes until this week's episodes, prying my lids open so that i wouldn't fall asleep.
but honestly i don't think i'll continue with it anymore. My friends are amazed that i stuck with it for so long in the first place.
I loved Playful Kiss (something i didn't expect) and am loving Secret Garden now, and want to give SKK Scandal a go now that i'm dropping MarySOAN.

Whew. It's about time. I already have one foot out of the door, while the other one still hesitant to follow. It's really a damn shame to have such a great cast in collaboration with a weak, lackluster storyline. Though the writer shouldn't be blamed 100% b/c the odd editing in some of the eps were terrible.

At first I thought Mary was only okay, but as the new episodes kept coming, I liked it more and more. I loved eps 4/5-8 or so, and I'm rooting for Kim Jae Wook's character and the actress (I don't know her name :x). But episode nine was SO BORING and DULL OMG, it was like the usual filler episode the dramas have before the finale.
I hope the change in writers is a good thing, it'd be a shame if the actors' talent go wasted.

I guess I'm the rare few that likes MSOAN more than SG. I like SG a lot too though! But it has so many side stories with many characters that I tend to doze off on those and only perk up when the leads are on screen with their body switching antcis.
I mean, with Oska and Seul, then we have Gil Ra Im's dad and the Director for the action school, and we have Tae and Oska, and we have Director Park, the issue between the mom and aunt. It's just too much to focus on all at once. I like MSOAN has main focus on the main characters, but I do agree that it needs som developing in many areas. Hopefully it gets fixed by this next writer. ^^

Even though I'm really, really hoping that this will somehow revitalize the show and make it legitimately good....I'm doubtful. It's hard to believe that a writer swap this late in the show's run will be a magical cure for MSOAN's ills.

I stopped watching mid ep 3 because it's so draggy and the fault cannot rely on the director alone. I think majority of the weight lies on the writer because it's so obvious that the director does not have enough material to work with.
All that's happened in episodes 1-3 could've happened within 30 minutes of Secret Garden.
I think the sole reason that got me watching up until ep 3 was Moon Geun Young. I honestly cannot handle anymore of JGS looking like a girl hippie. I understand it's his character but heck, why do they have to style him like a girl? Most K-indie artists I know hardly look like that.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this drama to at least have a decent ending because I still want to finish it.

in his acting so I feel like he is MG himself . I will watch this drama as long as there is JGS. i love everything about MG.

I hope that big move will make the drama go on top. But like what JB said it wasnt really a masterpiece drama. The story was simple the only thing that makes a hallelujah drama is because of the lead actors who are both so popular. People are making a big fuss because both actors came from a successful dramas on their own and the production expect them make the boat floating without good paddling? what a waste of time!

I read the written preview of ep. 10 of MMM, and I wanted to scream. In despair. I'm currently watching this drama and I'm kind of loyal to the dramas I choose to watch, but I'm getting more and more disappointed. And then I was thinking of how would I write/ change the script and I came up with some idea:
- MG and Mary elope and start a life together somewhere in the country where the dads can't find them (even if they try hard), and their friends cover for them (this time for real) - this wouldn't be easy, can be some funny/hilarious situations and adds some tension to the drama.
- JI more sly and two faces, not obedient and emo, showing some anger towards his father, at least behind his back, trying to deceive him.
- SJ makes a move on JI (in order to forget her disappointment or whatever) and JI accepts as if "what a hack" (or boredom or because MG is out of reach ;P ), and they have a hard time to keep the relationship in secret from JI's dad and in the office.
- SJ trying some scheming to break up MG and MR and fail miserably with backfire.
But there is a very slim chance that the drama would go in at least one of these directions. Anyway, just some thoughts of mine and wishful thinking.

Maybe MSOAN appeals largely to a younger audience ... teenagers who just go gaga looking at MG's beautiful face?
He's so beautiful, I can imagine myself staring at him the whole time. We dream of a candy floss happy ending for both Mae Ri and MG where they live happily ever after with just their clothes (or without) on their backs.
Perhaps a more matured audience would welcome more complicated twists and turns, sorrows and joys in the show to turn it into something so sorrowful like Cruel Love?
Whatever it is, I enjoy MSOAN as it is purely for entertainment. A girl can dream of her own beautiful Prince Charming ...

Korean dramas have some crazy production rules. I guess they have a different way of doing things since these series are so long and big budgeted. But still, I really hate that aspect sometimes, that the integrity of the drama depends on the opinion of the viewers. If only Mary had been more thought out in the first place. I think both lead actors signed on because JGS needed work, and MGY wanted to act in a light-hearted comedy to spread her horizon, so to speak.
But this is a trend I've been seeing in drama world lately, in both Japan and Korea. The plot starts out strong, then after a few episodes in, it becomes boring and repetitive. People lose interest quickly nowadays and dramas have so much competition now with the media at our fingertips. If we find some parts of the plots boring, we'd rather skip to the ending and watch it on Youtube after it finished airing. Nobody sits around waiting to see what happens next anymore.
Secret Garden, Mary's supposed competition, isn't fairing so well for me either. I admit it was intriguing up to when they first learned of the body swap. But what they did with it was pointless. I was kind of glad it was over so they can move on with the plot. But I digress. With Mary, there's still enough cuteness to keep me watching, and because honestly, there's nothing really better to watch now. I hope the change will be for the better.

JGS is adorable and absolutely gorgeous, isn't he? JGS, if you are reading this, keep up with the good work. Don't let the low ratings discourage you. A rating is just a number that is determined by viewers ... mainly older ladies (no offence intended) who expects more from a drama. Your performance as singer truly rocks. Hmmm . . . just wandering by. In American TV, we have the famous case of _Twin Peaks_ . . . in which all the foreshadowed details turn out to be irrelevant to the plot. Crippled the series' otherwise sterling reputation. And, more recently, _Lost_, in which they fell back on "everyone was actually dead." In both cases it was obvious the writers had set up a plot and various details without figuring out what they all meant.
I get that vibe with MSOAN. All that set-up and no clue as to where to go. And to cap it off, that idiotic bit with the hand-cuffs. Might have worked as a ten minute gag, but at every scene, I was yelling "locksmith . . . locksmith, you idiots!"
I'll throw in a vote for Seo Jon as the best written character. Her motivations made sense, she made ADULT decisions, in context with her characterization. The rest of the characters made little sense. A supposed "indie" rock character who can only write sappy rock songs and turns down work when he's broke? Worries about compromising himself for life over a job that will last, at best, three months? A "bohemian" leading lady more prudishly virginal and stupidly naive than the postulant nun in You're Beautiful?
I'll go with the dubiously crazy rich guy in Secret Garden and his borderline sociopath aristocratic mother.
Also, I will believe anything Ha Ji Won tells me on screen. Even if the script says that a 30ish veteran professional athlete and actress who's been injured multiple times and presumably dealt with many injured comrades, also with costumers, make-up techs, directors, etc. for so many years, is so prudish she shrieks and faints at the sight of a naked male body.

Adult decisions... as in the Seo Jun who reacted like a nutjob because she was kept out of MG and Mary's secret even though it was none of her business. And made it her business to bully MG's friends for answers because she has nothing better to do as a upcoming famous actress.

It might just be me, but watching 6 eps of the drama, I didn't feel any chemistry at all between the main leads. Honestly I watched this drama because of JKS, but even that's failing now. I had hoped it would get better but after three or some episodes of always getting drunk, it gets pretty boring. I feel bad for JKS because I feel like his talent is wasted on this drama. This is not up to par with his Hwang Tae Kyung, but rather a step backward. How sad. I hope his next project will really bring out his talent-and we know how talented he is.

ep 7 was really the climax (so far). everything kinda just slowed down after that (and was a kinda slow before it too). hopefully the new writer can introduce some new twists and turns.
