Ratings creep upward for Sungkyunkwan Scandal
by javabeans
Well, with extensions confirmed for both Giant and Dong Yi, I think the best Sungkyunkwan Scandal can hope for is a strong third place showing in the Monday-Tuesday ratings race. And while the gains made this week are fairly small, at least they are encouraging: Week 2 brought in a 7.3% and 7.5%, up from last week’s twin 6.3% ratings.
By comparison, Dong Yi drew a 25.3% for its Tuesday episode, with Giant closing in on the gap with a 24.2%. Both dramas will be ending with 60 episodes, after being granted a 10-episode extension each.
But more than the uptick in the numbers, I’m finding Sungkyunkwan‘s story to be as refreshing and entertaining as I thought it last week. The series weaves bigger social, cultural, and political issues into what could be a frivolous trendy-drama story, adding some interesting depth to the plot. It doesn’t hurt that Yoo Ah-in takes a bigger role this week — he’d been the least featured last week but the most charismatic (in my opinion) of the four; the first two episodes focused more on series leads Park Min-young and Park Yoo-chun (aka Micky Yoochun), as well as the exceedingly engaging Song Joong-ki.

I just finished watching ep 3 and 4. I must say, it's really getting better and better. I wanna rush the time so I can watch the next episodes already. It's so addictive, seriously. Ep 3 cracked me up (dae-mul),. and ep 4 is the best episode for me (so exciting and with a lot of sweet and funny moments)... so far. I hope they get better ratings next week. I love Sungkyungkwan Scandal. it's got a mixture of everything for me. Comedy, drama, action, romance, everything with a very solid plot that's so compelling to the viewers.

The story is fun and refreshing.. eventhough i dont think they will manage to beat DY and GIANT, they will still have a solid viewer base.. so double digit may be possible.

don't want to sound like a fangirl ...
but i kind of am
damn you sjk wai are you so adorbs
but on a deeper, uh non squealing level, this drama has really caught my interest. i've always loved historical dramas, and this has a great mix between keeping the humour for a younger audience as well as hinting to darker complexities of the corruptible dynasty. i was ridiculously excited for dong-yi, but i kind of gave up on that because it became so longwinded (also a lack of bsb >_>) so this might have to take its place haha. and of course, as the recaps pointed out, the setting and costumes etc are all gorgeous. (:

Me too! I thought I was the only one....
I have seen each episode (1-4) at least 2 times (raw and subbed) and enjoy every moment. Although, I understand very little Korean.
I wished they aired this on cable in America, or at least Hulu.
The scenery and costumes are beautifully done and the story pulls you in, so that you can't wait (at least I can't) until the next episode.
The cast (main and supporting) is very well put together.
I'm definitely hooked!

This drama totally took me by surprise. When I first heard about it at the beginning of the summer, I had no real intention of watching it. Then, on a whim and because I was bored, I decided to give the first episode a try. Now, I'm completely hooked, and I can't wait for the next episode.

to be honest, I only started watching this because of yoochun. the plot didn't really interest me that much cuz I've seen enough girl pretending to be boy drama with hana kimi and YAB, amongst other similar plots. But I was surprised that I really loved it when i watched the first episode. I've watched the first 2 episodes like 3 times now and i never tire of the story. It's not just the cute boys but the general flow of the story itself that I find compelling.
I really think they Sungkyungkwan Scandal deserves a better rating than what they're getting now.

Yay! I'm very glad this is happening for this drama because I'm really really enjoying the flip of the female lead being a cynical skeptic and the male lead being the honorable idealist.
I love it :) SS Fighting!

I am actually rooting for this pairing: Yoo Ah In and Park Min Young. They have the best chemistry, even in the press conference pics.
But I'll take Yoo Ah In anytime, haha.
Thanks.

I'm a DBSK fangirl and speaking from non bias side, I find this drama entertaining to watch too. I have tried out Playful Kiss, though that drama is decent but SKK Scandal draws me in more.
Hopefully the rating will continue to go up.

Episode 4 was SOOOOOO good. Yoo Chun is getting better and better.
SKKS is a high quality drama, it deserves better ratings it's just having a really tough competition because both DY and Giant are at it's peak already.
Let's just hope that it can still achieve double-digit ratings despite all of it.

You mean the exceedingly engaging face of Soon Joong-ki. I know the boy has acting chops, but every time they cut to his face I squeal a little inside. It doesn't help the fangirlism when his character is also a hedonistic playboy - perfect for his face.

I'll try:
1. cross dressing female
2. beautiful lead man (all three of them)
3. beautiful antagonist man
4. cool teacher
5. dark politic
etc
it is, in all aspect an idol drama. But it also, in all aspect a serious period drama.

Elow. I'm guessing you're pinoy, right?
Seriously, this is the best lighthearted rom-com-perios piece drama I've ever watched so far.
Even the first episode is fast-paced, you can already see where the story is going, it has a very solid plot. The story is somewhat like Hana-Kimi, although unlike HK, our heroine has a very good reason of attending Sungkyungkwan university. She needs to support her family and her sick brother, and the allowance from the school will help her accomplish that both. Plus, she's forced to enter the entrance examinations for the scholars by Yoochun's character (she was posing as her brother to earn money by helping students with their schoolworks and posing as a substitute exam-taker, where she was found out by Yoochun's character and saw that she's smart so he tricked her into taking the exam herself under his brother's name), Plus, the King personally chose her to attend the University and reside there as some sort of punishment for posing as an exam-taker for someone else. ANd if she doesn't go, she'll be forced to submit to an old high-ranking geezer and marry him.
It contains very little political drama, but this provided some action sequences (Iljimae-like) to be incorporated into the story.
You'll love the characters. they all have their own identity but it all fits well into the story. Yoochun's an upright, proud nobleman with a great sense of justice that evryone presumes as conceit, except
for yon-shik/Yon Hee (our heroine) who's always defensing his actions, although she admits that she hates his gut.
If you're a female, you'll positively swoon from Song Joongki's smile and personality. He's the playful and naughty one, always playing tricks on yonHee (he knows she's a girl), but he's basically nice and he gets along with evryone. And Yoo Ah's the tough and rebellious one. Everyone is school calls him a wild horse and are afraid of him.
IU'mnot a good writer so what I wrote might not be that good. But Simply put. It's the best drama for me.

I just realize the heavy competition that occur on Mon-Tues. It filled with high quality drama...
Seeing the list, I am just happy that SKKS maintain it's viewership. The other three are filled with big star name that a newbie like SKKS are just lucky to have their piece of audience.
(no matter how good it is, sometimes luck play important role on rating. And also big name actor that guarantee the story-although this not always happen)

Now, when it`s Mon-Tue, i get confused everytime, because i really wanna watch Dong Yi and Sungkyunkwan Scandal live! Both! (I`m greedy..). But because my internet sucks so i have to choose, and it`s getting hard.So i leave it up to my net streaming ability, which one that have a better link.. :P
And boy, I`m glaaad.. that Yoo Ah In`s story is more interesting and has depth. I`ve been wanting to see his angst after Heuk San (Strongest Chil Woo).
